The film’s early morning shows were cancelled due a legal case on the film’s producers. The afternoon shows too had been called off. According to a report in the Indian Express, the makers of Veera Dheera Sooran has finally cleared all decks, and the evening shows will start as planned. What was the controversy around Veera Dheera Sooran? The issues started with Mumbai-based production company B4U filed a case against producer HR Pictures in the Delhi HC for announcing the release of the film before finalizing the OTT deal. B4U holds the rights to sell Veera Dheera Sooran’s OTT rights. The Delhi HC ordered an interim stay of the film’s release until 10:30 am IST on Thursday and ordered the producers to deposit Rs 7 crore (Rs 70 million) and submit the required documents within 48 hours. L2 Empuraan Review: The Mohanlal & Prithviraj combo is ultimately a letdown The makers were also ordered to push the release date by four weeks. But with a lot riding on the release, it was expected that the stakeholders of the film would arrive at an amicable solution soon. The makers have now assured that the shows will resume in the evening. A post by HR Pictures read, “Theatrical Screening begin worldwide! Witness our Chiyaan Vikram as Kaali. Get ready for an action-packed ride. Don’t miss out on this epic adventure! An SU Arun Kumar Picture. A GV Prakash musical.” From Jab We Met, DDLJ And More!
Buzz tells the story of India’s most celebrated tattoo artist, Eric D’Souza, The documentary backed by Bollywood star Anil Kapoor captures his extraordinary journey by filmmaker Maahir Khan. Filmed like an intimate documentary, Buzz traces Eric's inspiring journey from the lanes of Mumbai to national prominence. Buzz released on February 28 on JioHotstar. on 28th February on JioHotstar.

We got talking to filmmaker Maahir Khan to understand his inspiration behind this documentary which is more than a regular film and acts as a starting point for a cultural conversation. Maahir explains how he captures the intersection of art, identity and resilience via his documentary.

Here are the edited excerpts of our chat:

Q: Buzz tells a deeply personal story of Eric D’Souza. What drew you to his journey, and why did you feel it needed to be told?

A: Simply because I found him to be a great ambassador for the underground countercultural movement of Mumbai. I felt Eric was the right person, and tattoos were the correct medium to show the subculture that took me in at a young age and showed me great compassion, kindness, and patience as well as empowering me artistically.

Q: Tattoos in India have traditionally carried a certain stigma. How do you think Buzz contributes to changing that perception?

A: I think any bias is formed from a lack of being able to empathise, and I hope that by seeing Eric’s story working in a subversive industry, people would not only challenge their perceptions about people with tattoos or tattoo artists, but all people who do something they don’t understand.

A cultural conversation starter

Q: The documentary captures the intersection of art, identity, and resilience. How did you weave these themes into the narrative?

A: It definitely was all a product of Eric’s honesty. I don’t think those are things I could have planned — he was so authentic and truthful that all we did was highlight his powerful vulnerability.

Q: What was the biggest challenge in telling Eric’s story in a way that felt authentic and impactful?

A: When you’re dealing with a documentary and you have a lull in the edit, the temptation is to go sensationalist through misdirecting the audience with your cuts. Basically, what reality television does. But I saw truthfulness as an unshakeable tenet in this project, because it would be horribly wrong to deceive people even slightly as that would compromise Eric’s trust and vulnerability. So, I think to make the film move cleanly and having a clear narrative thread without using tricks was the main challenge here.

Tattoo culture in India

Q: Do you think India is now more accepting of tattoo culture, or is there still resistance?

A: I think it is far more accepting now than it was when I was first getting tattooed. Back then, you didn’t tell people you had tattoos, or show them — it is highly likely they would form a false perception of you. While resistance may still exist in some pockets, it has severely diminished over the past decade or so.

Q: Your father, Feroz Abbas Khan, is a celebrated filmmaker and theatre icon. Did his storytelling sensibilities influence your approach to Buzz?

A: Not really. My father and I have great respect for each other, but our specialties are very different. I cut my teeth in counterculture and existentialism as a writer, he in Indian culture and socio-political issues as a director. So, while we love each other’s work, we are rarely involved in influencing either of our processes.

Collaborating with Anil Kapoor

Q: How involved was Anil Kapoor in shaping the final cut, and what was it like collaborating with him?

A: Anil Kapoor is an amazing person to work with because he truly understands the artist’s mind. And that was no different for me. His involvement was less with the cut — though he did have very valuable inputs there — and far more on mentoring my artistic ability so I could be empowered to make the correct decisions along the way. I am incredibly grateful for that. He showed immense faith in me and helped me hone my own voice significantly.

Q: Buzz is not just a documentary but a cultural conversation. What do you hope audiences take away from it?

A: I hope they take from it whatever it chooses to give them. The same reason a film is riveting for one person can be another person’s reason to hate it. Either is okay — art gives in complex ways because it is often dealing with a walled up subconscious psyche. However, if there is one thing I hope happens from people watching this film, it is that people feel less alone after hearing Eric’s trials and tribulations and how he overcame them. It’s never too late, you are never too broken and it will get better, so never give up.

Q: In a time where streaming platforms are bringing diverse content to viewers, how do you see Buzz contributing to this shift in Indian storytelling?

A: Honestly, I feel it is beyond my pay grade to claim Buzz does anything on a larger level in terms of a shift. What I can claim is that we made this film with the goal to be relentlessly truthful, wherever that may lead us. The novelty of the subject or the circumstances of the people were never the main point of the film, so it’s difficult for me to say that this fits under “diverse” though hopefully it does feel like a fresh take of a subculture for audiences.

The shift I hope Buzz is part of is bringing back more character driven films and documentaries, and fewer high-concept macro ideas because I think fewer people loving a film versus a lot of people just liking it leads to more engagement and honestly, movies that have a longer life.

L2: Empuraan is the highly anticipated sequel to the 2019 blockbuster Lucifer. Like many sequels, it tries to be bigger and better than its predecessor and ultimately ends up being a letdown. In Empuraan's case, it is not its larger scale or acting that really holds it back but an overindulgent screenplay by its writer, Murali Gopy.

A standalone story that lacks a punch

Set five years after the events of Lucifer, Empuraan is mostly a stand-alone sequel that explores the larger themes and world-building that the first movie set up and follows Khureshi Ab'ram (Mohanlal), the leader of an international crime syndicate who is forced to return to his native state of Kerala after a betrayal.

Lucifer was a political thriller that used the mass-masala formula to tell an interesting story set against the political climate of the state, and the mass elements and world-building only helped to enhance its narrative.

However, when it comes to Empuraan, even though it shares the same core as its predecessor and the political themes it tries to explore are interesting, the movie ultimately becomes a victim of its often-bloated screenplay.

Overindulgent writing

Murali Gopy's script tries to come off as clever and layered. While it has its moments, it mostly feels basic and lacks any intrigue. The dialogue at times comes off as copy-pasted from a book of great quotes, trying to pass it off as original. The movie has the same issues that his 2017 movie Tiyaan had, where again, great ideas and themes were let down by a script that tries too hard to show you how clever it is.

Distracted with its own scale

Prithviraj Sukumaran, as a director, has done a solid job for the most part, but it is clear that the much larger scale of the movie, the exotic locations, and the new toys he gets to play with keep distracting him and end up being the focus rather than the characters and storyline.

Particularly in the action set pieces, which, other than a few exceptions, lack any real excitement or intensity. There are slow-motion shots that overstay their welcome, drone shots for the sake of having one, and the overuse of the mediocre music by Deepak Dev, doesn't enhance the mass elements of the movie but deters them instead.

Flashes of brilliance

That is not to say that the movie is terrible or boring, but it is a shame that it never lives up to its potential. This is particularly noticeable because there are things that work really well in the movie.

While I won't be going into any spoilers, I will say that the entire opening flashback is a great example. It is well shot, impactful, and does a great job of setting up the movie's villain. Mohanlal is great and fun to watch; it is a shame that the movie doesn't utilise the actor more.

He carries every scene he is in. The movie is a testament to how skilled and nuanced his dialogue delivery is, even the hammy ones. There is a scene in particular in the first half of the movie when he interacts with Indrajith Sukumaran’s character, Govardhan, where he warns him with a few lines of dialogue and some great acting that he is nothing more than a tool in a larger game.

The parts of the movie that explore the political parties of Kerala and their dynamic of engaging. The supporting cast was great, but the standouts were Abhimanyu Singh, Manju Warrier, Jerome Flynn, and Eriq Ebouaney. The only performance that fell short was Andrea Tivadar, who delivered a wooden performance and felt miscast.

So, ultimately, L2: Empuraan, despite the hype, is not a sequel that outdoes its predecessor but one that will forever be in its shadow.

Internationally acclaimed film Santosh will not release in India. The Oscar-nominated film which was sent to The Academy as UK’s official entry this year, will not release in India as the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has blocked its release as they objected to the portrayal of police brutality, caste discrimination, and misogyny in the Shahana Goswami starrer, as per The Guardian.

Santosh is written and directed by British-Indian filmmaker Sandhya Suri. After the censor board of India blocked its release, she was left feeling heartbroken. She said, “It was surprising for all of us because I didn’t feel that these issues were particularly new to Indian cinema or hadn’t been raised before by other films''.

Santosh team upset with CBFC's decision

Sandhya revealed that the CBFC has demanded “impossible” to implement cuts in the film. While she didn’t share the exact details of the cuts asked for, she said that the list of censor’s demands, was extremely long and included concerns about themes relating to police conduct and wider societal problems.

She told The Guardian, “It was very important to me that the film is released in India so I did try to figure out if there was a way to make it work. But in the end it was just too difficult to make those cuts and have a film that still made sense, let alone stayed true to its vision.”
