Thunderbolts review: The ‘new Avengers’ bring back Marvel’s lost glory

Ajay Devgn is back in full form as the Income Tax officer Amay Patnaik in Raid 2 as he fights off corruption and money-hungry politicians. Raid 2 pits Ajay Devgn’s officer against corrupt and power-hungry politician Dadabhai aka Riteish Deshmukh in a thrilling cat-and-mouse chase. Raid 2 is as good as the first film which became a huge sensation at the box office and continues a good run for the franchise.

Directed by Raj Kumar Gupta, Raid 2 delivers its promise of being nail-biting till the end although it does feel a bit lengthy towards the end. The film, however, manages to still keep you hooked and not drag like most films do when you can predict the ending of a good prevails over evil saga.

Riteish is brilliant in every frame. He is vicious, perverse, deceitful and you can’t stop looking at him when he does what he does as Dadabhai – a man considered too good to be true and exalted as God by the people of Bhoj. He plays the unsuspecting politician who has made helping the poor his motto, and it's only Amay who is able to unmask the real Dadabhai.

How he makes the people around him believe in his false narrative is what the story tells us through twists and turns. The songs also fare well and complement the story.

Ajay and Vaani Kapoor’s chemistry also deserves a mention. The two look good with each other. While it is Amay and Dadabhai’s film, Vaani does do more than just acting as a beautiful face.

What works

Raid 2 is gripping, its engaging, it tells us a new story of fight against corrupt people in power. It has some great acting from the leading actors. Both Ajay and Riteish are in top form. Ajay does justice once again in the cop role. Riteish shines as vile politician who hoards the entire city’s money while playing saint.

The story impresses with its shock value as fans keep guessing where he’s stashed all the black money – gold, immovable assets, cash, and more.

Saurabh Shukla strikes again in the film as Tau Ji from Raid. His story gets a follow-up in Raid 2 as he’s shown revelling in Amay’s actions. He’s brilliant as the scornful Tau Ji who desperately wants Amy to fail only to become his cheerleader towards the end.

Tamannaah Bhatia and Sidharth Malhotra have joined hands for their first film together. Balaji Motion Pictures and TVF unveiled a chilling motion poster for the film which is pegged as a mystical thriller called Vvaan– Force of the Forrest. Vvan Plot and Cast The film retells a folk story which has mystery, thriller and lots of suspense. The motion picture teased a glimpse of Tamannaah’s character – draped in a maroon saree, sprinting barefoot through a dense, shadowy jungle. As she sees a warning sign, she gets visibly shocked but continues her journey, even when thorns draw blood. Her character in Vvan - Force of the Forrest goes on to brave the forest as she lights a diya, possibly a symbol of hope in pitch dark.
Directed by Pablo Larraín and written by Steven Knight, the movie was released in select theatres in the United States on November 27, 2024, before streaming on Netflix.

When and where to stream the movie in India

After a long wait, the movie is set to stream in India on May 9th, streaming only on Lionsgate Play! Known as ‘La Divina,’ Maria Callas remains one of the most iconic opera singers of all time, her voice resonating with both power and vulnerability.

This gripping biographical drama unveils the untold stories behind Callas' rise to fame and enduring legacy, set against the dramatic backdrop of 1970s Paris. Starring Academy Award-winner Angelina Jolie in her highly anticipated comeback, the film brings to life the unparalleled opera icon with breathtaking visuals and an emotionally charged performance that fully embodies the diva’s passion, struggles, and larger-than-life spirit.

Apart from Jolie as opera singer Maria Callas, the movie stars Pierfrancesco Favino, Alba Rohrwacher, Haluk Bilginer, Stephen Ashfield, Valeria Golino, and Kodi Smit-McPhee in supporting roles.

Talking about how she felt for the real Maria Callas, Angelina Jolie said, “I care for her deeply. I’m very moved by her, and I’m so happy we had the opportunity to show her as a human being. There’s something I learned about her, that she couldn’t see. When someone looked at the prescription glasses that she wore later in her life, they said to Pablo, “That lens, that prescription, this person’s almost legally blind.” Wow. When she was young, she couldn’t wear those glasses and be on stage. It wasn’t accepted, so she had to memorize everything very differently. When you understand that, you see this person’s survival instinct. It wasn’t that she just wanted to be this; she had to survive and hide it and find a way around it and work twice as hard.”

Continuing on, Jolie said, “Maria was pushed into singing as a young person by her mother, and when she was able to give it everything she had and be her best, she communicated something to people that was transformative. But as she got older and made choices in her life and different things happened, that same audience punished her for not being able to do that for them anymore. She had an enormous amount of pressure on her. And I think she was a very sensitive person.”

Talking about her experience of learning how to sing that way, Jolie added, “To be very candid, it was the therapy I didn’t realize I needed. I had no idea how much I was holding in and not letting out. So, the challenge wasn't technical, it was an emotional experience to find my voice, to be in my body, to express. You have to give every single part of yourself. When opera singers express pain, it’s not like a little bit, it’s the biggest depth. It requires everything that you’ve got. It requires your full body, and it requires you to be full emotionally, as open and as loud, in as big a voice as you can possibly do.”

Directed by Pablo Larraín and written by Steven Knight, the movie was released in select theatres in the United States on November 27, 2024.

Sonali Kulkarni has dabbled with films, TV shows, OTT series and has now ventured into something new – voice acting for an audio series titled His Majesty's Tiger Season 1 by Audible. It’s a Hindi language audio series in which Sonali plays Rani Sukanya, who is tasked with something important. How she overcomes personal struggles to help solve a mystery, Sonali effortlessly transitions into Rani in the audio series.

Discussing her evolution as an actor, following her Guru’s advice of ‘finding own voice’ and why she thinks its important for cinema to have new filmmakers who challenge the norm, Sonali Kulkarni opens up in an exclusive chat.

Here are the edited excerpts:

From TV to Podcasts

Q: Having worked in TV, films and now audio shows, what was it like to explore a new domain?

A: From a time when we only had Doordarshan and Akashwani to now getting spoilt for choices, we have come a long way. Audio has picked up as a great medium, with the viewing time getting shorter by the day. I feel people binge-watch less these days. That’s where podcasts come in. I am glad that Audible approached me for Rani Sukanya’s role.

Q: What can you tell us about voice acting?

A: You know Zeba, I still remember my theatre workshop with Pandit Satyadev Dubeji, who was my mentor, guru, friend, philosopher, guide. We lost him 10 years ago. But when I was in the 11th standard, I asked him something and he said that I should speak in my own voice. I kept portraying a sweeter self, but he was never convinced. When he kept telling us to speak in our own voice, out of my frustration, I asked him one day what it meant. He said, "find your own voice."

I took a big learning from that. I realised that if I imitate someone, I will lose myself in the crowd. So when Audible asked me to play Rani Sukanya, I knew that they had something in mind because this casting was very interesting for me. People have seen my plays, they have seen my web series and films in a variety of languages but to come in an audio series was definitely unique.

No one-size formula for films

Q: Sonali, why do you think filmmakers can no longer do away with a one-size-fits-all formula for all films, since most of the mega-budget films are tanking at the box office?

A: Having one formula would serve a lot of purpose and would solve all the problems because we put in a lot when we are making a film. It is time, it is talent, and apart from everything, filmmaking is a business of emotions. So if we knew the formula, success would have come easily, but then why is it, even though everyone knows the formula in an exam, not everyone makes it to the topper’s list? Every filmmaker is trying to explore something new, and that’s important because how else will we have variety?

Interview| Prajakta Koli speaks about love, audiobook Too Good To Be True: 'I was hopelessly romantic....'

No language barrier

Q: As someone who has worked in different languages of different films, how do you feel about the Indian audience no longer having a language hitch while watching films?

A: Thanks to lockdown, everyone explored a variety of content in different languages. I thankfully have a wide variety of experience because I started with a Hindi film, Cheluvi, then did one in Tamil called Me Madam. Then I worked in Marathi which is my mother tongue. I worked in Gujarati, Telugu, Italian, English, and many other languages.

Babil Khan Interview: Qala was not my debut film. I debuted in dad Irrfan Khan's........

I am so happy that people can distinguish between South Indian films now. There is nothing like South, there are Malayalam, Tamil or Telugu films. They are all very distinctive.

I feel we are all global stars today. Today, talent matters and not the language.

Here are the edited excerpts: From TV to Podcasts Q: Having worked in TV, films and now audio shows, what was it like to explore a new domain? He said, "find your own voice." I took a big learning from that. No one-size formula for films Q: Sonali, why do you think filmmakers can no longer do away with a one-size-fits-all formula for all films, since most of the mega-budget films are tanking at the box office? A: Having one formula would serve a lot of purpose and would solve all the problems because we put in a lot when we are making a film. It is time, it is talent, and apart from everything, filmmaking is a business of emotions. So if we knew the formula, success would have come easily, but then why is it, even though everyone knows the formula in an exam, not everyone makes it to the topper’s list? Every filmmaker is trying to explore something new, and that’s important because how else will we have variety? Interview| Prajakta Koli speaks about love, audiobook Too Good To Be True: 'I was hopelessly romantic....' No language barrier Q: As someone who has worked in different languages of different films, how do you feel about the Indian audience no longer having a language hitch while watching films?
