James Gunn's Superman hit theatres worldwide this week and has dominated the box office. The movie was the first big-screen entry in the DCU and set up and hinted at a few of the projects in the DCU's lineup. One such surprise was the quick cameo of Milly Alcock's Supergirl/Kara Zor-El, who shows up at the Fortress of Solitude to take Krypto with her as she goes off into space. The Supergirl movie is currently in post-production and will be the second DCU film.
A darker origin story than Superman
Kara is Superman’s older cousin, who escapes Krypton’s destruction at the same time as her infant cousin. However, her ship travels through a wormhole, delaying her arrival on Earth by decades. By the time she reaches the planet, her cousin has already grown into Superman. Speaking about Supergirl in an interview with ScreenRant, James Gunn said, "She's a mess. She's a total mess. I mean, I think as we learn, she's had a completely different background from Superman. A much more difficult background. He's had this wonderful upbringing by these two parents that loved him and were very healthy. And her background was much different than that. And she's ended up different than her cousin."
What is Supergirl about?
Supergirl is directed by Craig Gillespie with a script written by Ana Nogueira. The movie will be based on Tom King's Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic, which follows Supergirl as she goes to a planet with a red sun to celebrate her 21st birthday. While there, she runs into a young girl named Ruthie Marye Knoll, who is hunting someone called Krem of the Yellow Hills, who killed her father in cold blood. The movie will be an intergalactic adventure with the duo travelling to various planets to find Krem. Supergirl will also have an extended cameo by Jason Momoa, who will be playing the role of the alien bounty hunter Lobo. The supporting cast includes Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, and Emily Beecham. Supergirl is scheduled for release on June 26, 2026.

Ever since the announcement of Diljit Dosanjh's starrer Punjab 95 was made, it has been the talk of the town. With controversies surrounding the film, it has piqued the curiosity of netizens, and they are eagerly waiting for its release in cinemas. However, as said, the film's release has been delayed, and now it is reported that it is being stalled by CBFC as they demanded several cuts, only then will it move forward.
Director Honey Trehan opens up on CBFC blocking Punjab 95
According to an NDTV report, director Honey Trehan opened up about the film being stuck with the CBFC. He said, “After 127 cuts, only the trailer will be left. I don't agree with those 127 cuts. Even if the film is released with all those cuts, I'll remove my name from it. I can understand that there is pressure on my producers to release with 127 cards, where everything gets changed, and it becomes something else.” “But it's not directed by me, so why would I take CBFC's credit away? I think it's better if they can get the credit. It's probably coming from people with an agenda; these people at CBFC, when you speak to them, they can't even talk straight.” He questioned the logic behind the demand for certain cuts from the film. “Let me give an instance. The story is set in Punjab. Why would any sensible person remove 'Punjab' from the title itself? They are Punjabi cops wearing a turban, and they tell me to call them 'Police' and not 'Punjab Police'. Where is the logic?. They also said Don't take Indira Gandhi's name. Okay, so then what should I call her? There's a film called Emergency that has been made on her whole life, and I can't even have one person take her name in the film? Why such partiality?” Based on the true story of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, the movie has been a subject of controversy for several months now. The film, which was supposed to release this year in February, has been met with radio silence from CBFC since then, after being asked for the removal of certain scenes.
Who is Jaswant Singh Kalra, on whom Punjab 95 is based
Jaswant Singh Khalra was a human rights activist who was kidnapped and subsequently murdered in 1995. After Operation Blue Star, which led to the assassination of Indira Gandhi, and the 1984 Anti-Sikh Riots, the police were empowered to detain the suspects. Using the given power, the police back then illegally detained and tortured innocents on the pretext of being militants. Bravely speaking up against the illegal activities and killings, Khalra fought against the human rights abuses in Punjab during the insurgency period, when several armed campaigns took place by the militants of the Khalistan Movement. Notably, he was known for uncovering the illegal murder and cremation of Sikhs by the Punjab Police. Working on the atrocities taking place, he investigated four major cases about the cremation of 25,000 unidentified bodies in Punjab, and the murder of around 2,000 police officers who didn't cooperate with the other police officers. Later, the Union government's investigative agency, the CBI, also revealed that police had unlawfully cremated 2,097 people in the Tarn Taran district alone. In 1996, the CBI found proof of Khalra being kept at a Tarn Taran police station. In the report, they recommended that nine Punjab police officers be charged with kidnapping and murder. Ten years after Khalra's death, six Punjab police officials were convicted in 2005. Two defendants, Deputy Superintendent Jaspal Singh and Amarjit Singh, were sentenced to life imprisonment. Khalra's wife, Paramjit Kaur Khalra, carried forward her husband's work and legacy. Grammy-winning Indian composer Ricky Kej has made a shocking revelation about a time when he was about to board a flight that later tragically crashed. Kej, who has previously criticised airlines for their poor service, has once again spoken out, this time against Boeing, following the release of an investigation report on the Ahmedabad plane crash, which many believe was unfair. The June 12 crash of Air India Flight AI171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, in Ahmedabad, India, sent shockwaves around the globe. Just 32 seconds after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, the aircraft crashed, killing 242 people on board. Responding to a post on X, Kej wrote, "Absolutely agree. This is from the Boeing playbook. Blame the pilots and settle lawsuits quietly. Control the narrative. They did the same with the two 737 Max crashes in 2019." He went on to share his personal experience when he was about to board an Ethiopian Airlines flight to Kenya that crashed. "I had booked a ticket on the Ethiopian Airlines flight to Kenya that unfortunately crashed. In the last minute, a colleague insisted I travel on an earlier flight, so my life was saved. Many attendees were killed on the flight. "Exactly.. the Ethiopian crash happened after the LION air crash. 2 crashes within 5 months. Boeing did the same, blamed the pilots.. also implied that non-western pilots are not as good. Then it turned out that the planes had a hidden MCAS system which malfunctioned. The system was kept hidden from the pilots and even the flight manual. So the pilots had to deal with a disastrous malfunction of a faulty system they did not even know existed on the plane!! Till this day, NO ONE from Boeing has been disciplined or fired for this. No heads rolled. Zero accountability, except for some pay outs. They do not care about lives.. and never will. Only profits," Kej added. For the unversed, the Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 crashed on March 10, 2019, killing all people on board.

Happy Birthday Harrison Ford: 8 Iconic performances you can't miss

Superman has been gaining more and more momentum at the box office. The movie is the first big-screen entry in the newly created DCU and is directed by James Gunn. The film has met with mostly positive reactions from critics and fans and currently holds an 82 per cent critics score and a 93 per cent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, making it not only the highest-rated Superman movie ever but also one of the best-rated DC movies since The Batman in 2022. It’s safe to say that the DCU is off to a great start.
Superman's promising global debut
Superman has grossed over $96.5 million globally on its opening day and is projected to gross over $210 million globally during its opening weekend. While this number may not be as high as some other superhero blockbusters, it is a strong indication that DC is regaining audience trust after the poor receptions of the final DCEU entries Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom and The Flash. It is also worth noting that the movie is expected to gross over $121 million from the US box office during its opening weekend, which is significantly higher than the last two major superhero releases: Captain America: Brave New World ($88.8 million) and Thunderbolts ($74.3 million).
Superman's ensemble cast
Superman stars David Corenswet as Superman/Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. The supporting cast includes Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, Skyler Gisondo, Sara Sampaio, María Gabriela De Faría, Wendell Pierce, and Alan Tudyk.
WION's Superman Review
In his review for Superman, Achu Krishnan wrote Gunn chose to opt out of a grand entry for Superman backed with his iconic theme. Instead, he showed the hero at one of his lowest points, and the rest of the movie's opening set pieces hint at his inexperience, self-doubt, and naivety, brilliantly brought to life by David Corenswet, who truly embodies the character and makes the role his own.

WION's Superman Review In his review for Superman, Achu Krishnan wrote Gunn chose to opt out of a grand entry for Superman backed with his iconic theme. Instead, he showed the hero at one of his lowest points, and the rest of the movie's opening set pieces hint at his inexperience, self-doubt, and naivety, brilliantly brought to life by David Corenswet, who truly embodies the character and makes the role his own.

Superman stars David Corenswet as Superman, with Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. The movie is the first big screen entry in the DCU and is directed by James Gunn.
