Martin McDonagh's Wil Horse Nine has its origins in Easter Islands. The film follows two CIA colleagues grappling with personal circumstances that test their friendship, all while Chile lives out the final hours of Salvador Allende's government ahead of a US-backed military coup.

Seeking inspiration for his next project, Oscar-winning filmmaker Martin McDonagh travelled years ago to Easter Island. The result is "Wild Horse Nine," a dark comic drama set against the backdrop of political and social tensions in Chile in 1973. John Malkovich and Sam Rockwell, actors long known for their memorably ominous characters, are joined by Steve Buscemi to star in the film that's garnered standing ovations across the festival circuit, starting with its debut in Venice. "Wild Horse Nine" follows two CIA colleagues grappling with personal circumstances that test their friendship, all while Chile lives out the final hours of Salvador Allende's government ahead of a US-backed military coup. Buscemi plays the CIA chief in Santiago, while Chilean actor Mariana di Girolamo, Parker Posey and Tom Waits round out the cast. And it's all set in the majestic, rugged landscapes of Easter Island. There's the beauty and mystery of the enigmatic "moai" stone statues carved by the Rapa Nui people, but also the terrain, the greenery and the ocean, McDonagh said. "All of those beautiful aspects of Rapa Nui were fundamental to it being a character in the story," the British-Irish director said during a press event at the Toronto Film Festival (TIFF). The director nabbed an Oscar in 2006 for his short film "Six Shooters," and has earned six more Academy Award nominations for the films "In Bruges," "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri" and "The Banshees of Inisherin." His latest film sees jaded agents Chris (Malkovich) and Lee (Rockwell) discuss life, regrets, love, politics and...cheese. "It's very theatrical, the buddy movie, in a way," Rockwell said, describing the characters as an "odd couple." The actor -- who recently made a star cameo on the series "The White Lotus" -- said that "even the way they fight, there's a love in the way they fight." Malkovich agreed: "Their arguments are like a married couple." - Layered characters - Malkovich said audiences often respond well to shades of regret -- "things they wish they had said or done or could say and do." "I think both these characters have a lot of those things." The 72-year-old, who won an award at the Venice Film Festival for his performance, said he enjoys playing such roles because "you get a lot of facets of someone." The duo in the film, for example, have no "problem with killing people." "That is in no way a moral issue to them," Malkovich said. "Their moral issue is killing people while eating... That's how they view the world." The personal drama of "Wild Horse Nine" unfolds during a turbulent chapter of Chilean history that intrigued McDonagh. But the director did not want a didactic film. "I love films that are entertaining," McDonagh said. "This has a lot of, you know, deep political context to it, too -- but I think you can do that." "Sometimes it's easier to do that through a joke than through a diatribe."

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>Speaking about the world premiere, writer-director and producer Richie Mehta said, “Phoolan Devi's story is one that demands to be told with honesty, and without compromise. I was drawn to a very specific chapter of Phoolan's life, the formative years before the world knew her name, contrasted with the period where she was a misunderstood legend. It felt essential to me to strip&nbsp;away the mythology and reveal the human underneath. The themes at the heart of her story — resilience in the face of adversity, the search for dignity, and the courage to claim one's own voice —are timeless. They resonate just as strongly today as they did then, across cultures and geographies. That is why this felt like the right moment to bring her story to the screen. From Poacher to Phoolan, Amazon MGM Studios has been a true creative collaborator, one that backs a filmmaker's vision and gives stories like these the global canvas they deserve. To witness the audience at TIFF rise to their feet, visibly moved, tells me that Phoolan's story has connected in exactly the way we hoped it would. I hope I have done justice to her voice and her story, the way she wanted the world to know.</p><p>The World Premiere at the Princess of Wales Theatre was attended by the film's cast and creative team. Leading the arrivals was Sneha Kumari, who delivers a breakthrough performance in the titular role of Phoolan Devi, alongside cast members Anurag Thakur, Aakash Dahiya, and Vikram Pratap Singh.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>They were joined on the red carpet by writer-director-producer Richie Mehta, and producers Shareen Mantri Kedia, Kanwal Kohli, Kishor Arora of Namah Pictures and Shilangi Mukherji, Director &amp; Head of SVOD Business, Prime Video, India, representing Amazon MGM Studios, India, at the prestigious festival.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Produced by Shareen Mantri Kedia, Kishor Arora, Kanwal Kohli and Richie Mehta, Phoolan is a Namah Pictures production. Following its World Premiere at TIFF, the Hindi action drama will premiere on Prime Video in India and across more than 240 countries and territories worldwide soon.</p>

<p>Over the years, social media has kept buzzing with trolls and comments targeting female celebrities over their physical appearance. Now, Bollywood actress Katrina Kaif has been trolled for postpartum weight gain. Amid the criticism, her <i>Mere Brother Ki Dulhan</i> co-star Ali Zafar has stepped in to support the actress and spoken out against such beauty standards.</p><h2>Ali Zafar on Katrina Kaif’s body-shaming</h2><p>A video of Pakistani actor Ali Zafar has gone viral where he addresses the discussion about Katrina Kaif's recent appearance, which has led to body-shaming online. He shared his own views on beauty standards and body-shaming.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>Also Read: </strong><a href="https://www.wionews.com/photos/katrina-kaif-s-birthday-special-namastey-london-welcome-new-york-7-must-watch-movies-of-the-actress-on-netflix-prime-video-jiohotstar-and-more-1784174989628"><strong>Katrina Kaif's birthday special: 7 must-watch movies of the actress on OTT</strong></a></p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>He stated, “We all need to look within ourselves. Especially as a man, if I am speaking about this, I think it is very important for us to look within ourselves and make the necessary corrections. We have all made mistakes in life; no one is perfect. But it is important to recognise those mistakes and correct them. But if we talk man to man, the privilege we assume comes with being a man, and the way we perceive a woman, her body, the way she thinks and the way she lives, if she does not fit the standards that we have created, we immediately put that woman down.”</p>

<p>Zafar also addressed the unrealistic beauty standards that have long shaped how women are perceived, noting that they are often judged primarily on their appearance. "This is wrong; this is not the right way to look at things. Every person is going through their own struggles, and we do not know what someone else might be dealing with. So, we should be kind to people, compassionate, understanding, accepting, and appreciative," he said.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>He further added, "If you study the Renaissance, concepts about women's bodies were different in earlier eras. Then came a time when women were expected to have a zero figure, and even expectations of men having six-pack abs are not realistic. They are not healthy. It's not healthy to always criticise other people. They are all human beings, and we have the potential to be nice to each other."</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>Also Read: </strong><a href="https://www.wionews.com/photos/katrina-kaif-s-net-worth-from-bollywood-stardom-to-kay-beauty-s-success-a-look-at-her-luxurious-empire-1784127097681"><strong>Katrina Kaif’s net worth: From Bollywood stardom to entrepreneurial success</strong></a></p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The actor and singer concluded by saying, "We all have a past. I will feel ashamed if I ever criticise someone based on their looks. We must all look within ourselves and, as men, correct ourselves and realise that we should not do this. Every woman has her own life, shaped by what she has gone through, her past, present, and future. Let her live, and you live your life."</p><h2>Why Katrina Kaif’s postpartum weight is not the problem</h2><p>WION<i>'s </i>Shomini Sen shared her thoughts on the issue and wrote, "For years, actresses have had to adhere to a certain body type and look to appease society. Public figures in particular are viewed through a lens where they are seen outside the laws of biology, ageing, and life transitions. A woman’s body is often treated as public property that must maintain an eternal 22-year-old baseline. For many, Katrina’s video on Monday came as a complete shock. How could the most desirable woman in the country look like their wives or mothers? How could the ultimate dream girl look so "girl next door"? Where did Sheila’s Jawaani go?"</p>

We have all made mistakes in life; no one is perfect. But it is important to recognise those mistakes and correct them. But if we talk man to man, the privilege we assume comes with being a man, and the way we perceive a woman, her body, the way she thinks and the way she lives, if she does not fit the standards that we have created, we immediately put that woman down.”

In a rare move, Buckingham Palace has issued a statement defending King Charles over allegations made by the late Princess Diana's brother, Earl Charles Spencer, in a new memoir.

Buckingham Palace has taken the unprecedented step of publicly challenging allegations made by Earl Charles Spencer, Princess Diana’s brother, in his upcoming memoir. The palace instructed officials to push back against Spencer’s account of a heated phone call with King Charles shortly after Diana died in 1997. This move breaks the royal family’s traditional stance of remaining silent during public criticism, signaling deep concern over the revelations set to be published in Swan Song: Diana, My Sister on September 22. In an official statement released to international news outlets on Wednesday, a palace spokesperson said, “Grief can cloud reason and distort memory. It is unhelpful to revisit events from this period based on recollections filtered through decades of emotion.” While the carefully worded statement does not directly call Spencer a liar, it clearly questions the accuracy of his memory nearly 30 years later. What has Earl Charles Spencer claimed? In excerpts published by the Daily Mail earlier, Spencer describes an angry phone conversation with King Charles, then the Prince of Wales, following Diana’s fatal car crash in Paris on August 31, 1997. Spencer claims Charles lost his temper during a debate over funeral plans, specifically regarding whether young Princes William and Harry should walk behind their mother’s coffin. Describing the moment, Spencer writes, “Prince Charles continued his stream of anger, without me interrupting. Then he stopped. I assumed the pause signalled an effort to bring himself under control, but then he unleashed down the phone what I have always taken to be his pent-up contempt for Diana, and his horror that the world was so bowled over by her death”. According to Spencer, Charles then made a striking remark about the global outpouring of grief. “Rest assured, we’ll forget her soon enough”. Why the Palace responded The decision to issue a formal rebuttal is being seen as a calculated PR strategy to counter Spencer’s claims before the book hits shelves worldwide. Palace insiders worry the memoir contains further allegations that could damage the monarchy's image and reshape how the public views the events surrounding Diana’s death. The controversy comes alongside an unusual pre-release incident. Dutch police are currently investigating the theft of four copies of Swan Song from a delivery truck in the Netherlands. Publishers called the theft "extremely suspicious" because the thieves targeted only Spencer’s memoir out of thousands of books on board. The incident has fueled massive media coverage ahead of the release. A modern strategy to protect the crown? Royal advisors determined that staying silent posed a bigger risk than speaking out. In today's fast-moving media landscape, unchecked claims can quickly become accepted as historical facts on social media and international news channels. By framing the issue around how grief can blur memories over time, the palace subtly questions Spencer's accuracy without accusing him of lying directly. Impact on the royal family Publishing sources suggest King Charles is "bracing for the worst" as the memoir prepares to launch globally in 12 languages. The timing is particularly sensitive as the 30th anniversary of Princess Diana's death approaches. Spencer noted he chose this moment to set the record straight before narrative errors become permanent. For King Charles, who took the throne less than four years ago, the book is likely to reopen painful family history at a time when he is focused on projecting stability in the United Kingdom.
