Getting into its nature also affected my emotional space. I wasn’t more of me. When you play an intense character and get deeper into the arcs of it, you start reacting more like it and less like yourself. And to get a hold of that is equally challenging as getting physically toned.

WION: Whenever you sign up for a project, what scares you the most?

Saqib Saleem: Doing justice to the character. What’s the point if you're saying ‘yes’ to a project but can’t let the character shine! There’s that. But practically, there’s also the fear of the unknown, the unpredictability that comes with the narrative, the world-building or even the nature of your character. It’s thrilling to enter a new space and a new mindset, but it’s also equally intimidating. I also think that this fear is important. If a project or a character isn’t scaring you a little, then it’s not challenging you as an actor.

WION: Do you think Bollywood has glamorised cops too much over the years?

Saqib Saleem: I would say that there has been a slight tendency, but overall, that’s the nature of cinema and entertainment. There’s also a shift. The audience is more inclined to the layers that come with cop portrayals. Today, it has gone beyond heroic entries, slow-motion action or even punchlines. The audience wants to see the human side of a cop more than the heroics. And that’s exactly what has offered us even bigger space to explore.

WION: At this stage in your career, what are you chasing more, validation, growth, or legacy?

Saqib Saleem: Definitely growth. Of course, appreciation feels great; it gives you the reassurance of being on the right path, but it can only take you forward so much. Right now, what excites me the most is to see myself in roles and shades that bring out the best of me, whether positive or negative ones. You get to learn the most when you are experimenting, and that’s exactly what I’d like to do.

WION: What’s one myth about being an actor that you want to break?

Saqib Saleem: One myth I’d really like to break is the perception of ‘easy accessibility’. I agree that the rewards are incredibly heartwarming, but there’s immense hard work to achieve those rewards. What’s usually seen is the glamour that comes in front of the camera. But it’s also about what goes behind the camera, the constant push to keep going, the rigorous shooting schedules and internal work. So, the accessibility is there, but there are also day/night efforts that make it happen.

Kaptaan is streaming on MX Player.

Ramakant is someone who genuinely believes he’s doing the right thing. He doesn’t see his actions as extreme, he sees them as practical. But that’s exactly what makes the journey so unpredictable. It’s a story that comes from a very real place, and watching that sincerity spiral into chaos is what makes the film both engaging and entertaining. It was also a joy working with such a brilliant cast, which really brought this world to life. It feels great to be working with Netflix again.
Namit Malhotra and his garage startup

Apart from traditional filmmaking, he was initially fascinated with the world of technology and gaming. According to several reports, he started his own video workshop in his father’s garage and even hired his teachers from a computer graphics school to join his startup. Soon, he merged his small business with his father’s company to create Prime Focus in 1997.

Still from Maa Ka Sum

Directed by Nicholas Kharkongar, the series, in the simplest terms, is a comment on how human emotions cannot be cracked with any sort of algorithm in this technological and data-driven world, especially when AI is the next big thing that humans have to deal with.

The show starts with a fun and happy bond between the son and mother, who are not like any usual parent-child duo. There is nothing hidden from each other; they go on random outings, deeply involved in each other’s lives, they have arguments, they have differences, but like modern things, they understand each other. It all, in the beginning, feels fresh and entertaining and enjoyable too. But soon, when Gast’s obsession with maths to solve that one algorithm takes over, it starts to feel irritating and tough to understand where the story is heading.

In attempting to cover too much, the show loses clarity. Along with this, the side narratives, like Gast and his Gen Z pals, feel like a set-up without offering anything natural.

I did like how casually the writers have touched upon unprotected sex and the risk of abortion. Also, Gast’s bond with his foreign return maths teacher, Ira, played by Angira Dhar, who is equally a maths fanatic, never quite impresses. Their long, maths-infused conversations make you want to skip ahead, often leaving you distracted.

The story might get confusing with each episode, but the characters are fairly well-formed. The women in the show stand out, they are clear about what they want. Mona Singh, who rarely disappoints, plays the role of a young mother convincingly. The way she balances her protective side while hiding her vulnerability. I also enjoyed her scenes with Ranveer Brar, who plays a cool investor. Angira Dhar, as the modern, foreign-return teacher, is effective in parts.

Mihir Ahuja also delivers a strong performance as a young boy dealing with trauma and his passion for maths.

As the story progresses, it becomes overcomplicated, especially with the heavy use of maths and algorithms in every dialogue, which is very hard to understand. The parallel plots don’t feel organic. With three different generations colliding in a world dominated by Gen Z culture and the ultra-modern side of Delhi, some moments felt amusing, like a mother telling her son he’s only allowed to drink more than two beers.

Maa Ka Sum is a story that breathes, lives, and eats maths with the entertainment only in parts.

Directed by Maa Ka Sum, the show starring, Mona Singh and Mihir Ahuja, is a family drama that feels promising in the start. But it is executed in an inconsistent way. Scroll to read the review.
