This medicine is, however, a prescription drug and should not be treated as a shortcut to weight loss.”</p><h2>How do these medicines actually work?</h2><p>Semaglutide, the active ingredient in Ozempic, belongs to a group of medicines known as GLP-1 receptor agonists. Rather than simply “burning fat”, it works on several processes involved in hunger, digestion and blood sugar regulation.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><i>Dr Narendra BS, Lead Consultant – Endocrinology &amp; Diabetology at Aster Whitefield Hospitals,</i> explains, "Semaglutide mimics the action of GLP-1, which plays roles like controlling appetite, aiding digestion, and regulating blood sugar levels. The mechanism of weight loss by semaglutide is probably the activation of brain areas that signal satiety and suppress appetite while reducing the desire for food and hunger. This causes calorie intake to go down without the person feeling very hungry. Semaglutide also delays the emptying of the stomach, enhancing the feeling of fullness after the meal. It should not be mistaken for a ‘fat-burning’ compound or one that burns fat and/or energy directly. Rather, it helps people lose weight via an overall decrease in energy or food intake. As both fat and lean mass would get reduced in the body, it is very important for patients to include enough protein and also have regular physical activity during treatment.”</p><p>&nbsp;</p>

GLP-1 medicines are prescription drugs

<p><i>Dr. (Prof.) Sandeep Aggarwal, Chairman - Manipal Institute of Minimal Access, Bariatric, GI &amp; Robotic Surgery, Manipal Hospital Dwarka</i>, also cautions against viewing these medicines as a quick fix.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>"The biggest misconception is that these medicines are simply quick-fix weight-loss solutions and they are supposed to be taken for 6 months only and after stopping weight loss is sustained. Semaglutide and Tirzepatide work by influencing appetite, insulin secretion and gastric emptying, which can help people lose a significant amount of weight. Clinical use has shown average weight loss of around 15% of total body weight with these medications, although the response varies from person to person. However, they are only one part of comprehensive obesity management. Dr Tandon says, "An individual who is otherwise healthy and simply wants to shift a few kilograms ought not take Ozempic without undergoing a medical check-up. A physician will assess your body-mass index (BMI) and waist measurements, check your food preferences and physical activity levels, determine any existing health conditions or take other medications, ask about any medical issues in the family history and examine whether there is a medically determined need for weight loss, and if lifestyle modification would work."</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Dr Aggarwal adds that using these medicines for cosmetic weight loss is not entirely separate from treating obesity, but there are clear medical criteria for their use. "There are definite indications for Ozempic use based on weight indicators like BMI with or without metabolic conditions. Semaglutide and Tirzepatide were developed and studied as medicines for metabolic conditions, and a medical professional should guide their use for obesity depending on the case."</p><h2>What about the side effects?</h2><p>Nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, stomach discomfort and reduced appetite are among the more common problems patients can experience, particularly when beginning treatment or increasing the dose.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>"Among the side effects that are most widely known are nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, stomach ache and low appetite. This will usually appear when you begin taking a dose and will usually diminish with increased time taking the medication, or when the dose increased. More serious health complications may include pancreatitis, gallstones or a very severe dehydration. Some people may be unable to take these medicines for health reasons – not advisable for self medication," Dr Tandon added.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Dr Narendra says GLP-1 medicines can affect different organ systems, "GLP-1 drugs affect multiple organ systems, yet patients should identify the true risks and avoid taking the online exaggerated risks seriously. Semaglutide has a safety notice against thyroid C-cell tumours because these tumours happened in laboratory rodents; the potential of medullary thyroid cancer in humans remains a matter of debate."</p><p>&nbsp;</p>

Side effects of Ozempic

Pancreatitis is one of the documented symptoms and even so it is a rarity, but when symptoms of abdominal pain persist, patients must seek medical evaluation. Gallstones and gallbladder inflammation are known side effects, partly because rapid weight loss itself can promote gallstone formation. Semaglutide typically will not damage the kidneys directly, but severe vomiting or diarrhea and dehydration can indirectly lead to acute kidney failure. Nausea, vomiting, constipation, and diarrhea are the most frequent side effects. These drugs should be used under supervision, with careful patient selection, slowly increased doses and ongoing monitoring. Self-treatment is not acceptable.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>There is also one important group for whom semaglutide requires particular caution. Dr Aggarwal is clear about the concern surrounding medullary thyroid cancer.</p><p>“A person with a personal or family history of Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma should avoid it.”</p><h2>The celebrity effect</h2><p>Celebrities, influencers and social-media users have made GLP-1 drugs highly visible, often alongside dramatic weight-loss transformations. But a photograph rarely tells the full story.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>“My biggest concern is the transformation of a powerful prescription medicine into a social-media lifestyle product. Online, people view striking before-and-after photos, yet rarely get to see or understand the actual medical workup that was done before choosing a specific treatment," Dr Narendra said. "It would reveal a great deal about the patient's condition such as diabetes status BMI, medications, gallbladder and pancreatic history, nutritional status, pregnancy plans and possible contraindications. So it looks and feels like all people can take the same drug in the same dosage and have the same result which is the case. At the same time, there is also a big worry about consumers getting medicines from unverified shops or even the Internet, then taking the wrong quantity of the medicine or speeding up the treatment because they desire a faster decrease in weight. We should not, however, swing to the opposite extreme and label GLP-1 medications as inherently dangerous. The real issue is medical supervision. Losing a few kilograms, only to subsequently regain the weight after stopping the medicine and not addressing eating behaviours and lifestyle habits, is not uncommon,” says Dr Tandon.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>As per Dr Aggarwal, "There has certainly been a surge of interest in these medicines, and social media and celebrity endorsements have contributed to their visibility. It is a weight loss solution for those who are candidates for this treatment based on defined indicators and metabolic conditions. They can be an effective component of obesity management for appropriately selected patients, but they work best as part of a broader approach involving dietary and lifestyle modifications."</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Since obesity is a chronic condition, treatment may need to be long-term, and stopping medication can be followed by weight regain. With multiple treatment options now available, some patients may also consider bariatric surgery when appropriate, particularly if significant weight regain occurs or medical goals are not achieved with other approaches.<br>&nbsp;</p>

In an announcement issued on September 3, the official Instagram page of Miss Grand International shared a post with a clip and wrote in the lengthy caption, "Miss Grand International would like to officially announce that the organisation has decided to discontinue all activities related to Miss Grand International 2026 in India and relocate the remaining activities of the competition to Thailand. This decision has been made following the host country's failure to fulfil the contractual commitments and standards agreed upon with Miss Grand International." In continuation with the statement, the decision was taken because the host country allegedly failed to meet contractual commitments and standards agreed upon with the organisation. The pageant body said its agreement required the host country to provide five-star hospitality and maintain five-star production standards throughout the competition. I think he's someone who is very, very practical in his approach. He's someone who is a very learned figure in our entire Hindu history, and that fear, that anger, I think that's just a part of him. There's a lot to him as well. Once you kind of delve into his life, which the book does, then you'll understand where he's coming from.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>I think he's a very family man; he's a very family person. He's someone who had a lot of brothers and was very close to his parents. I think somewhere it kind of connects with me as well because I have, while I don't have brothers, I have a lot of cousins; I have a lot of family members I'm close to, even in today's day and age when usually I see my counterparts around me who are not that interested in being in front of me.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>I still live with my parents even after getting married. I have very close familial ties. Yeah, I think Lord Parshuram's life when he was young was like very family-oriented.&nbsp;</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>WION: Mythological storytelling is becoming popular nowadays, and Nitesh Tiwari's Ramayana is also coming soon. Parshuram had an encounter with Lord Rama where he challenged him to prove his strength. Why do you think stories like these still resonate with audiences?&nbsp;</strong></p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>KEVIN:&nbsp;</strong>I think they are universal in their approach. They deal with very simple themes. I think what matters is, for instance, when you look at the <i>Ramayana</i>, it deals with the theme of a man's wife being abducted by a Rakshas, by a demon. So it's about him going to get his wife back and, along the way, defeat the demon as well.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>It's a very simple story filled with very interesting figures, and very interesting subplots. I think what matters, even with Lord Parshuram's journey as well, is that it deals with a simple thought process: his father was killed, and in response, he wants to go and take vengeance against all the kings who have polluted the earth.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>It's a revenge story, and it's a story that has a lot of universal appeal. I think that's what makes it timeless. Even after a hundred years, if someone writes about Lord Parshuram, it's still going to feel fresh. It's all very fresh because the story is simple; the skeleton is simple, but the meat is where the complexity comes into the picture.&nbsp;</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>WION: The Hindu month of Sawan is currently underway, and Lord Parshuram has a strong connection with Lord Shiva, the revered deity of this time. Do you think the timing of your audiobook release makes the story even more relevant for audiences?</strong></p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>KEVIN:&nbsp;</strong>I myself am very, very shocked that it is being released. It all happened so organically. It was supposed to be released in June. The book was finished last year, by the way. And the editorial, the cover, and everything were supposed to be released during the summertime because it was supposed to be a summertime, long-lasting kind of thing. And for whatever reason, I think probably because of the blessings of Lord Parshuram only, it was released around summer. So, I'm very happy to actually say that.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>WION: You became widely known for your </strong><i><strong>Kalki</strong></i><strong> trilogy and have since explored several mythological characters, including Karna, Narasimha and Meghnad. What draws you towards these larger-than-life figures and their stories?</strong></p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>KEVIN: </strong>When I wrote Kalki, not many people really knew about the character. I still remember pitching the book and being asked what it was about. Some people even thought it was connected to actress Kalki Koechlin rather than Lord Kalki. Today, Kalki is seen as a larger-than-life figure.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>When it comes to Lord Parashurama, I personally feel that not much has been written about him. We know about Lord Parashuram only through the Ramayana, where he meets Lord Ram and challenges him. However, we don't know his Chiranjeevi side. We don't know his side, how he grew up, or that he lived in a small village called Dharapa. His first book is about him getting his axe from Lord Shiva. And I think those are the stories that were not told. And that was one of the major reasons of, you know, pushing for Lord Parashurama.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>So, while it might look larger than life when we chat about them, unfortunately, a lot of people don't talk about them as much as they should be. And we only, unfortunately, know the two major epics, which are the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. Beyond that, when it comes to Jyotindra, a lot of people don't know their mythology, unfortunately.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><blockquote><p>We usually know our gods and goddesses from a religious perspective, but not necessarily from a mythological or literary one. While my books are not meant to be strict retellings of the Puranas, I hope they encourage readers to explore these stories further. If someone reads one of my books and becomes curious enough to learn more about the characters, my job is done. So, that is my agenda as a storyteller.&nbsp;</p></blockquote><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>WION: If you could give us just one hint about what Kevin Missell readers should look forward to next, what would it be?</strong></p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>KEVIN: </strong>My next book will obviously be Parshurama 2. I want to finish the series and then move on to the next series. So, Parshurama 2 will be released, hopefully, around January, and Parshurama 3 will be released around April-May, which is around the summer. And then it's going to be on the Varaha Avatar, Mohini Avatar, and on the entire Amarida property I'm going to be writing from. So, I'm planning to finish the entire Amarida property. I believe I have also just released a few audiobooks already.</p>

WION: What has been the response to the latest release, Parashuram: The Axe of Rudra, and has anything about the audience reaction surprised you? KEVIN: Well, I'm very surprised that the audience has been very receptive to the entire book. I am releasing a book after one year. I thought that I was probably gonna get less audience, but the books are flying off the shelves. WION: Parshuram is known to be a fierce character. It is important to consult a doctor about hair loss if bald patches, inflammation of the scalp or any scaling occur with itchiness, pain, or loss of eyebrows.<br>Moreover, loss of hair that comes with symptoms like fatigue, changes in weight or irregularities in menstruation may also need diagnosis. This is due to nutritional deficiency, thyroid issues and hormonal changes may prevent the hair from growing properly. The treatment should only be administered after establishing the real cause of hair loss instead of following some magic solutions advertised on social networks.''</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Concluding her explanation, she said, ‘’It is considered typical to have some hair falling every day. Mejo is from Kerala, and she secured the national title after competing against 51 other finalists. The finale saw contestants from across the country, with Vaishnavi Ganesh from Tamil Nadu finishing as the first runner-up and Anushri Satavlekar from Gujarat taking the second runner-up position. <p>Ethel Caterham, the world’s oldest living person, turned 117 on Friday. Recognised by Guinness World Records, the British supercentenarian celebrated the milestone with family and friends at her care home in Surrey on August 21.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Caterham marked the occasion with a message. "Thank you for all of the kind birthday wishes. Even at 117, I've had many firsts this year, from stroking a llama to holding hands with the King! She was the second-youngest of eight siblings. <p>So what people do is live in the UK, move abroad, sell everything tax-free, and then come back to the UK. So to avoid this, they have created a rule that states that if you leave the UK for less than 5 years and sell your assets while abroad, the UK will still tax you when you return. Why might Harry and Meghan be safe? Because they left in 2020 and are returning in 2026. That's 6 years, which crosses the bar of 5 years.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>So, the temporary non-residence rule probably won't apply to them, and any assets they sold while in the US may not be taxed by the UK.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><h3>Why they will have to pay big bucks under &nbsp;Foreign Income and Gains (FIG)</h3><p>But this six-year-term will not benefit them in the new four-year foreign income and gains regime. Under this, people are required to spend 10 consecutive years out of the UK.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>"Six years away is not enough to qualify for the new four-year foreign income and gains regime, which requires 10 consecutive years of non-UK residence.'' Financial adviser, Nouran Moustafa, from Roxton Wealth said.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>In easy terms, if you are non-resident for 10 years in a row, when you come back to the UK, the government gives you a benefit for the next 4 years, and they will not tax you on the income and profit you make from your foreign assets.
