House of Dragon star Tom Glynn reveals he had to sit 6 hours for makeup to crack Aegon II's look

House of Dragon star Tom Glynn reveals he had to sit 6 hours for makeup to crack Aegon II's look

What will happen to King Aegon II in House of the Dragon season 2?

This week’s episode drop for House of the Dragon season 2 was a bit slow after an intense episode 4 which saw an epic battle between three dragons. Season 2 episode 5 however did take into account a lot of things like the change in scene at King’s Landing, Harrenhal and Dragonstone.

After Rhaenys Targaryen and her dragon Meleys were felled in episode 4 of House of the Dragon by Aemond Targaryen and his dragon Vhagar, we expected the new episode to go a bit easy on our appetite. After all the King was down and the Greens were a dragon down. Returning victorious with a dragon’s head and a burnt King, all political dynamics changed with just one fight.

As for King Aegon II, he lost everything in that battle. Suffering from third-degree burns in episode 4 after being betrayed by his own kin, brother Aemond, Aegon II is left waiting for a kind death or a miraculous recovery. We don’t know which way we are truly headed.

Coming to the visuals of that fight, Aegon II played by British actor Tom Glynn-Carney, revealed he had to go through six hours of sitting in the makeup chair to get the aesthetic of his look correct. He was burnt by dragon fire after Aemond commands his dragonVhagar to breathe fire on the King. Read our review of House of the Dragon season 2 episode 5 here

Tom sat on a makeup chair for six hours to transform into burnt Aegon II

Tom would spend six hours in the makeup chair every day for that look, to look gnarly and bruised. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Tom revealed that the testing stage for the look took the longest. They tried different versions before locking the final look we get to see in episode 5 of season 2 of House of the Dragon.

Aegon II, who is severely critical in episode 4 had to also work on his voice because he ends up damaging his vocal cords too. Tom said, “I didn’t create a new voice. I did a lot of research into how intense heat and burns can affect your vocal folds, and just completely decimate them.”

Does Aegon II know that Aemond betrayshim in House of Dragon?

When asked if Aegon II realises that he was betrayed by his younger brother Aemond, Tom said, “That’s for the audience to decide. I can’t comment on that. I don’t want to tell people what to think. That’s up for grabs.”

Tom also spoke of Aegon II having his own mind as a King. The actor thought that his character had the space to grow if he was given time. Whether he does bounce back and grab that Iron Throne from his conniving brother, is something we will have to watch out for.
