Cannes: Horizon director-producer Kevin Costner holds back tears as film gets 7-minute standing ovation

Kevin Costner with the cast of Horizon

It was a glorious moment for Kevin Costner who couldn’t hold back his tears after his film Horizon: An American Saga opened at Cannes Film Festival to a seven-minute standing ovation. The Western epic evoked a reaction in the audiences that Kevin Costner didn’t account for.

Amid huge applause and chants of “Kevin! Kevin! Kevin!”, Costner looked visibly moved. He thanked the audiences at the film festival and promised “three more” installments of the Horizon franchise. The franchise is already due to get a sequel in August.

Kevin Costner: The director, producer and actor of Horizon moves to tears with Cannes reception of his film

Holding back his tears, Kevin Costner addressed the audience and said, “I’m sorry you had to clap that long for me to understand that I should speak. Such good people. Such a good moment, not just for me, but for the actors that came with me, for people who believed in me and who continued to work. It’s a funny business, and I’m so glad I found it. There’s no place like here. I’ll never forget this — either will my children.”

The story is told from the perspective of cattle ranchers, farmers and soldiers building a future for themselves as well as the Natives who lived there first.

Why it’s even more special for Kevin is because he has put much of his own money into making this mammoth of a film – $100 million-plus film, including mortgaging his ranch. Kevin Costner directed the film and also starred in it. He has also produced and co-written it.

While the film got a standing ovation there were some not-so-great reactions too as many suggested that the film saw many walkouts with some people not returning as Horizon has a three-hour runtime.
