The decision to move the National Film Awards ceremony out of Delhi for the first time in its 72-year history has sparked a debate within the film industry. As the 72nd National Film Awards prepare to be held in Gujarat on September 22, veteran actor Paresh Rawal has reacted to it.
What did Paresh Rawal say about the National Film Awards ceremony in Gujarat?
As per the ANI report, when Paresh Rawal was asked about Gujarat hosting the 72nd National Film Awards ceremony, the Bollywood veteran actor said, “Is Gujarat in Bangladesh or Pakistan? It is also a part of our own country. Why shouldn't this event be held in Gujarat? Events should be held in Gujarat too. I say such events should take place in every state. There is nothing wrong with that.”
For the unversed, the decision was officially announced earlier this week and has triggered mixed reactions from members of the film industry. Filmmaker Rahul Dholakia questioned why Gujarat was selected over other major film-producing regions such as Maharashtra, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Hyderabad.
National Film Awards to move out of Delhi
The 72nd National Film Awards ceremony is set to take place on September 22 at Ekta Nagar in Gujarat, near the Statue of Unity. The venue shift marks a major break from tradition, as the ceremony has historically been held in Delhi. Reports describe this as the first time in the awards' 72-year history that the ceremony will be held outside the national capital.
Shifting from the long-standing tradition, the event is going to be held at Gujarat’s Ekta Nagar, formerly known as Kevadia. President Droupadi Murmu is expected to present the honours to this year’s winners during her visit to Gujarat later this month.
Ekta Nagar is in Gujarat’s Narmada district and is best known for the Statue of Unity, the 597-foot monument dedicated to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. The landmark was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2018 and is the world’s tallest statue. The destination has emerged as one of Gujarat’s major tourism attractions.

Filmmaker Rahul Dholakia on National Film Awards Ceremony venue shift
Amongst many who had questioned the decision of hosting the ceremony in Gujarat, the Raees filmmaker Rahul Dholakia questioned it, took to X and wrote, “I have no particular love lost for Delhi hosting the National Film Awards, but I question the shift to Gujarat. Why Gujarat?”
Breaking the tradition, this is the only second time in 72 years that the ceremony is moving outside New Delhi, following a rare instance in 1971 when the 17th awards were held in Chennai.
