Australian cricket stars Ricky Ponting and Matthew Hayden have relentlessly pushed for changes in the playing XI following Australia’s most shocking Test defeat in history against Bangladesh. The series opener in Darwin saw the travelling Asian team stun the full-strength Australian side inside four days and by nine wickets to register their first Test win Down Under, and second overall against Australia in this format. However, head coach Andrew McDonald has urged patience with the ageing squad and those under the radar, including opener Jake Weatherald and former number one Test batter Marnus Labuschagne. Players like veteran Nathan Lyon, who picked just one wicket on his return to the Test team, and Cameron Green, who almost saved his place with a second-innings hundred, are also under scrutiny; McDonald seeks better player management in the quest to make a comeback in this two-match Test series. The second Test starts on August 22 in Mackay. Also read| ‘Won’t Accept Him’: Kris Srikkanth rejects Ashwin’s pick Eoin Morgan for CSK coach role "I'm the last one to want to make change," Ponting said in a statement to Channel Seven after the first Test concluded. I think that has to happen,” he continued. While Travis Head also fared poorly, getting bowled out identically to Hasan Mahmud in two innings, Weatherald’s technical flaws and Labuschagne’s stubbornness to not learn from his mistakes put them at the forefront of any changes, should it happen. "The 1-2-3, as Ricky and I will tell you, are absolutely fundamental to the set-up of a batting team," former opener Matthew Hayden told the same broadcaster. “When they are constantly putting that middle order under pressure, Steve Smith arriving way earlier than he ever needs to be, then you've got to start to answer those questions.”
Coach Urges Patience
McDonald has come out in support of his team and the players, saying Bangladesh exposing the age-factor crisis in Australian cricket would remain a concern; however, he would not shy from making any changes for the deciding Test. "It's always going to be a conversation, the age profile of the team, where we're at, how we're travelling. A loss doesn't help that," said McDonald. "But these players have got a fair bit of cricket left in them, I believe. "It's just really how we navigate through it. There's always going to be calls for change on the back of a loss. There's going to be an emotion around that from the outside – and even internally. Our guys sit in that change room, and they're feeling it. You feel a Test loss. It means a lot to them to play for Australia, so let's not lose that in all this as well. "The easy option is to call for change. A lot of people call for change even when we're winning. They're entitled to do that as well on the back of a performance like that. Why wouldn't they? That's part of our lot,” he added.

India’s only centurion so far in the Galle Test against Sri Lanka, Devdutt Padikkal, revealed what keeps his engine going in the middle as he smashed his career-best 167 in only his fourth Test, propelling India to 460 for nine at stumps on day two. Padikkal was on a roll in Galle, taking on Sri Lankan spinners and seamers at will, hitting 15 fours and a six in his marathon outing. Entering this match on the back of an unbeaten 142 in India’s only warm-up fixture, Padikkal scored big batting at number three. His 167 even forced broadcaster Sanjay Manjrekar to choose him over first-choice Sai Sudharsan for that position, who missed out on selection due to a toe injury. Manjrekar said India should persist with Padikkal even when Sai attains full fitness. Also read| SL vs IND, 1st Test: Padikkal, Jurel shine as India dominate rain-hit Day 2 Upon sealing his chance, Padikkal explained how hunger for runs and seeing off the first 10 balls make his job easier. "I think, honestly, it's just the hunger to [score] more runs," Padikkal said in a chat with Sony Sports Network after the second day’s play. "I just enjoy batting out there, and the moment you get to a hundred, it's easy to relax and feel that relief. And over the years, I've seen so many cricketers get big runs, get big hundreds, especially back in Karnataka, so just watching them bat makes me want to do the same,” he added.
Padikkal’s Mantra of Playing Spin
Tackling spin in Sri Lanka was always going to be challenging until Padikkal made it look easy. How he came down the track and smashed his sixth ball for a straight six tells a lot about his preparation against the turning ball, and on such tracks. Explaining in detail how the team management has helped him work on that, Padikkal said, "Yeah, I think we [the India team] have discussed that at length. Especially when you're playing spin, it's important that you have certain plans in your head. You cannot go out there and expect to react [to the ball] all the time. It's important that you have a couple of shots in your head that you want to play as soon as you go out there, so that you can put some pressure on the bowler as well. "So I think over the last year or so, we have really worked on trying to find ways [within] our own strengths that we can really implement to make sure that we put pressure back [on the bowlers],” he continued. As things stand, India has batted 116 overs for 460 runs at the loss of nine wickets in the first innings.

Devdutt Padikkal’s impressive 167 was the highlight as India reached 460 for nine at stumps on a rain-hit second day of the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle on Sunday (Aug 16). Sri Lanka’s spinners, however, fought back strongly after a long delay caused by rain. The ICC has been mulling an early October start for the 2027 ODI World Cup in Africa, and the latest reports suggest they have informally finalised October 2, which also happens to be Mahatma Gandhi's birth anniversary. Australian captain Pat Cummins made no excuses for his team’s shocking nine-wicket loss against Bangladesh in the first of the two Tests in Darwin on Sunday (Aug 16). Cummins led a full-strength Australian XI for the series opener but failed to replicate Steve Waugh, who guided Australia to an innings win over Bangladesh at the very venue 23 years ago. While Cummins expressed no concerns over Australia's preparation for the first Test, he hinted at returning to the drawing board and making changes to the XI for the next Test if necessary. Bangladesh, on the other hand, entered this Test on the back of getting folded for just 54 in their scheduled warm-up tie against Cricket Australia XI; they, however, did the unthinkable by beating the mighty Aussies for their first Test win Down Under, and only their second-ever against Australia in Tests. Chasing a mere 57 in the final innings, Bangladesh lost their opener and first-inning hero, Tanzid Hasan, for a duck before Shadman and Mominul stitched a stand to see Bangladesh home with nine wickets remaining. "I thought our preparation was pretty much spot-on. I thought it was excellent, so, yeah, no excuses," Cummins said at the post-match presentation. "They [Bangladesh] played really well. I thought the day one wicket, [there was] a little bit [in it] early but obviously [we've] got to try and find a way to bat a little bit longer than we did, and then just couldn't penetrate with the ball." "They outplayed us in all facets. Playing only their third Test on Australian soil and the first since 2003, Bangladesh entered this contest on the back of getting all out for just 54 during their lone warm-up fixture against the Cricket Australia XI. Instead of feeling burdened about it coming up against a full-strength Australia, Bangladesh believed in their game and executed most plans to keep the Aussies silent throughout the four days. A nine-wicket victory over the mighty Aussies is also Bangladesh’s second-biggest win in terms of wickets in this format. Hasan Mahmud was Bangladesh’s star bowler, picking up his maiden five-wicket haul Down Under in Australia’s first innings and returning with six wickets for just 55 runs. Has Devdutt Padikkal answered all the questions the men’s selection committee and the team management were seeking for the longest time? Perhaps! The left-handed batter came in at number three on day one of the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle and owned it completely. Padikkal smashed his maiden Test hundred, remaining unbeaten on 131* at stumps, propelling India to 288 for two and into the driver’s seat. Looking in command and control of his knock, Padikkal made light work of Sri Lanka’s bowling attack, impressing all, including cricketer-turned-broadcaster Sanjay Manjrekar. Since dropping Cheteshwar Pujara at number three, India tried several options, including their Test captain Shubman Gill in that position, but none seemed to have clicked. Sai Sudharsan was the last to be tried before a toe injury ruled him out of the series, which opened the gates for Padikkal to return to the Test setup. Also read| IND vs SL, 1st Test: Devdutt Padikkal hits maiden Test century as India dominate Day 1 Riding on a brilliant hundred in the warm-up fixture, Padikkal was bound to have a breakthrough outing in the series opener, and going by the looks of his shot selection, he did not disappoint. Later, commenting on his strengths during a chat on Sony Sports Network, Manjrekar said, “Devdutt Padikkal was the big change that India had, I really think selection is so good that when you see Padikkal walk in and play spin so comfortably, because he's good in defense against spin, he's good at picking 1s and 2s when the field is slightly deep, and then he's also good at playing attacking shots, and that too off the back foot on slow, turning pitches.”
Backfoot Shots Separate Padikkal from Rest
While he looked utterly in control of his shot selection on the front foot, Padikkal’s backfoot shot selection left Manjrekar in awe. The former Indian batter even suggested that Padikkal should continue at number three for India in Tests even when Sudharsan returns from his injury. “That's something remarkable. On slow, turning pitches, to hit shots off the back foot with a straight bat and the pull shot tells you that it's somebody who wants to get onto the back foot, and the best way to play spin on a slow, turning pitch is to play the majority of the bowling off the back foot. “Along with that, he's also got this knack of going down the pitch and hitting the ball over the sight screen. So on pitches where there is going to be an emphasis on spin, India should bat him at number 3 even if Sai Sudharsan comes back, because he looks such a formidable player against spin; I think it was a godsend for India, Devdutt Padikkal at No. 3 with the kind of spin talent he has,” Manjrekar continued.

After sealing 2027 ODI World Cup qualification, Afghanistan romped past hosts Ireland to win the five-match One-Day series 4-0. Leading 3-0 heading into the final match in Belfast on Saturday (Aug 15) after the series opener was washed out, Afghanistan completed their highest ODI run chase to win the game by six wickets. Josh Hazlewood became the ninth Australian bowler to take 300 Test wickets after claiming 6/89 against Bangladesh in the first Test in Darwin. Indian Test captain Shubman Gill has set his sights on the ultimate goal: the WTC Final next year at the Oval. As Team India gears up for its 600th Test match, which gets underway with the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle on Saturday (Aug 15), Gill wants his side to sweat it out in all nine remaining Tests and aim for the finale. Although India must win at least six or seven Test matches to push for WTC Final qualification, the two-time runners-up should be aiming for all nine, giving themselves the best chance of making it to the UK. That journey, however, starts from Galle, as India and Sri Lanka face off in a two-match Test series. “The main goal is to play the WTC final, which is next year. And we have got about nine Tests, and I think we have to win around six or seven to be able to have a good chance at qualifying. So in terms of that, I think it's a very important series for us," Gill said at the pre-match presser. Also read| 'Very big honour': Shubman Gill on leading India in historic 600th Test Ahead of India’s first Test since losing to South Africa at home in November 2025, Gill featured late in the second innings of the lone warm-up match, which India won. Captain Shubman Gill wants India to use their historic 600th Test as the beginning of a fresh push towards the World Test Championship (WTC) final and a series win in Sri Lanka will be important for India to remain in the race. The Men in Blue are currently fifth in the WTC standings with a points percentage of 48.15, while Sri Lanka are sixth with 41.67. Bangladesh are fourth on 58.33, meaning India have plenty of ground to cover with less than a year left before the WTC final. Gill, who has now completed a year as India’s Test captain, said the team must start collecting the wins needed to stay in contention. “I am comfortable in my role as captain now. Our goal is to stay in contention for a berth in World Test Championship final. We need to win six or seven Tests for that. So we want to make a beginning here,” Gill said on the eve of the first Test. A series win would improve India’s position in the WTC table. A 1-0 win, with the other Test ending in a draw, would give India 16 points and take their total to 68, raising their points percentage to 51.51. A 2-0 series win would give them all 24 points, taking their tally to 76 from 11 Tests and their points percentage to 57.58. Also Read - Canadian Open: Iga Swiatek wins first title of 2026, beats Rybakina in final The series is also a major milestone in India’s Test history, as Saturday’s opening game will be India’s 600th Test since their format debut against England at Lord’s in 1932. For Gill, the chance to lead India in such an important match on Independence Day makes the occasion even more memorable. “Leading my country in the 600th Test is a very big honour and doing so on Independence Day is an even bigger honour,” he said. Also Read - IND vs SL, 1st Test: When and where to watch live streaming in India? India also have some decisions to make regarding their batting order.
