Women's T20 World Cup 2024: New Zealand dent India's semifinal chances with big win over Sri Lanka
New Zealand are one win away from a place in the Women’s T20 World Cup semifinal after they beat Sri Lanka by eight wickets in the ongoing Women’s T20 World Cup in Sharjah on Saturday (Oct 12). Playing at the Sharjah Cricket Ground, New Zealand’s win over Sri Lanka also meant that the latter is officially out of the tournament with zero points while India now need a win over Australia coupled with a defeat for New Zealand to guarantee a place in the semis.
New Zealand win big to keep semis hopes alive
Needing 116 runs to win in 20 overs, the White Ferns eased to the target in 17.3 overs, which gave a massive boost to their Net Run Rate (NRR). Georgia Plimmer scored 53 off 44 to play a key role in the side’s win while Amelia Kerr scored unbeaten 34 off 31. Captain Sophie Devine (8) was at the crease when New Zealand completed the honours to register their second win of the competition. They had earlier beaten India which saw them sit in the driver’s seat for a place in the semis.
Earlier, on a slow pitch New Zealand restricted Sri Lanka to 115/5 in 20 overs.Leigh Kasperek (27/2) and Amelia Kerr (13/2) were the star attractions with the ball. Skipper Chamari Athapaththu was the top-scorer for Sri Lanka as she scored 35 off 41 and helped the team reach the triple-figure mark. Harshitha Madavi contributed with 10 for the Islanders. However, they could not prevent the embracement of avoiding defeats in all four matches of the T20 World Cup.

If India lose to Australia on Sunday, their NRR will drop consequently and will drop to the third position. Currently, India sit top with four points (NRR of +0.576) and New Zealand occupy the third spot with the same points (NRR of +0.282). Australia’s win also means India will need a helping hand with Pakistan needing to beat New Zealand in the final group game on Monday (Oct 14).
