Suryakumar Yadav started his stint as India's T20I skipper with a win and equalling Virat Kohli's record as well. Surya, during India's 43-run win on Saturday (Jul 27) against Sri Lanka, was named Player of the Match for the record 16th time.
Only Virat has 16 POTM awards to his name in 125 international T20Is games he played before retiring after India's T20 World Cup glory in June.
Surya, meanwhile, reached the milestone in nearly half the matches - 69 to be precise and has a chance to add more to his tally as well.
Behind Surya and Virat is Zimbabwe skipper Sikandar Raza with 15 POTM awards in 91 T20Is. Next is Afghanistan all-rounder Mohammad Nabi with 14 POTM awards in 129 matches.
Former India T20I skipper Rohit Sharma completes top-five with 14 POTMs in 159 matches he played before retiring.
India's new T20I skipper was named the POTM in his first match as captain for scoring 58 off 26 balls, hitting eight fours and two sixes.
Thanks to his fifty and decent contributions from Yashasvi Jaiswal (21-ball 40) and Rishabh Pant (33-ball 49), India posted a huge total of 213/7 in 20 overs.
Sri Lanka were very much in the chase with 140/1 in 14 overs before a proper batting collapse saw them getting all-out for 170 runs in 19.2 overs.
Speaking after match, Surya praised the opposition for playing brilliantly and said: " I think they were playing some good brand of cricket from ball one. Even with wickets falling, they [SL] kept the tempo up. We practised here for two-three days and we knew how the wicket would play. We never thought it [the game] would go away from us, given we won the World Cup."
India next play Sri Lanka on Sunday (Jul 28) before the final T20I of the series takes place on Jul 30.
