New Delhi, India
Harry Brook-led England did well to keep the five-match ODI series alive versus Australia with an impressive win in the third ODI at the Riverside Ground, Chester-le-Street on Sep 24 (Tuesday). Chasing 305, Brook & Co. were 11-2 but the captain's unbeaten 110 and Will Jacks' 84 kept the home side in the hunt as they were well-ahead in the DLS par score before rain ended proceedings. Thus, England won by 48 runs (DLS) with Australia still leading 2-1. The fourth and penultimate ODI will be held on Friday with hosts desperate to level the scoreline.
Talking about the third ODI, England opted to bowl first and had Australia reeling at 172-5, despite Steve Smith's 60 and Cameron Green's 42, before Alex Carey (77), Glenn Maxwell (30) and Aaron Hardie (44) took them to 304/7.
With England off to a disastrous start, it seemed it will all go downhill for the hosts. However, Brook and Jacks' 156-run third-wicket stand ensured the home side's recovery as they kept getting the boundaries and maintained a healthy run-rate to be comfortably placed at 254/4 in 37.4 overs when rain made no further play possible. By then, England were well ahead in the DLS par score to win their first game of the series.
Will England make it two wins in a row or Australia will take an unassailable lead in the penultimate tie? Only time will tell.
