Woman loses heartbeat for 45 minutes after delivering triplets due to a rare occurrence

A woman in the US state of Texas was clinically dead for 45 minutes after delivering triplets. She underwent a planned C-section but suffered a “rare but catastrophic” medical occurrence soon after. Marisa Christie and her husband, Dylan, learned during her second pregnancy that she was carrying triplets, TODAY.com reported.
Christie was scheduled to have the C-section at 33 weeks pregnant. She reached the Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Medical Center North of Houston on August 21.
Her maternal-foetal medicine physician, Dr Amber Samuel, successfully delivered the babies. They were on top of Christie when she suddenly started having seizures.
“My arms flew up, and that was when my heart stopped,” she told TODAY.com. The anesthesiologist for the C-section, Dr Ricardo Mora, said,“She (was) essentially grey”. He said he experienced a similar incident 15 years back during a delivery, and “knew something terrible just occurred.”
He knew what was happening to Christie. It was an amniotic fluid embolism (AFE), a rare but often fatal birth complication. “It’s pretty catastrophic," Mora told the outlet.
"It’s about 80%, 85% fatal."

Mora said Christie was "not breathing" and had "no pulse".
At the time of the seizure, the doctor was "pulling the placenta out". Mora says this problem normally occurs during the "separation of the placenta and uterus.”
Christie had no pulse
He immediately called a code blue, indicating to the rest of the hospital staff that a patient was in critical condition. “We started CPR because she had no pulse," Mora said.
Christie was haemorrhaging and her blood was continuously being replaced. Dr Samuel closed her uterus to stop the bleeding. Dr Stephen Maniscalco, a cardiothoracic and vascular surgeon at the hospital put her on a machine that works for the heart and lungs to help the body recover.
The machine was pumping blood into an unconscious Christie almost an hour after her heart stopped. Mora says she lost "her whole blood volume" and "for 45 minutes, was clinically dead" as the blood volume was replaced.
However, she started bleeding again and had emergency surgery and the doctors removed her uterus. Christie was unconscious and on ECMO for a week. Fortunately, she survived the ordeal.
