Gas leak causes chaos at Malaysia’s international airport. Here's what happened

Malaysia's Kuala Lumpur International Airport entered into a mess after a gas leak at its engineering section led to chaos on July 4 (Thursday) and made 39 people sick, said a Malaysianemergency services official.
"A total of39victims suffered from dizziness and nausea," said local rescue officer Muhammad Nur Khairi Samsumin, in a statement.
He stated that all 24 victims were later discharged and 14 others were provided medical care at the Air Disaster Unit. Meanwhile, one person was hospitalised.
Meanwhile, fire services also responded after the chemical leak happened at the aircraft engineering facility. The facility is not connected to Kuala Lumpur International Airport's passenger terminal.

The leak affected the work of three companies which were operating at thefacility. The air travel at the airport was not disrupted by the incident and the passengers or flights were not affected. Also, the chemical leak did not cause any risk to public safety.

Here's where the leak was traced
The police said that they traced the gas leak which was happening at a skid tank which was left unattended for nine years.
Local rescue officer Muhammad Nur said that the leaked gas was found to be methyl mercaptan and the source was discovered as an "unused tank" at thefacility.
"Work to cover theleakwas being done by the emergency crew," Nur said. He added that officials will dismantle and then dispose the tank.

Muhammad Nur said methyl mercaptan gets added to liquefied petroleumgasto give it a particular smell, which alerts people about any leaks. Thegascarries a strong odour like rotten cabbage.
