UK: Government increases fine for employers and landlords aiding migrants
As part of attempts to discourage new immigrant arrivals, the UK government announced additional fines for businesses and landlords who permit undocumented immigrants to work for them or rent their properties. The Conservative administration wants to put an end to unauthorized small boat crossings of the English Channel as it struggles in the polls ahead of a general election scheduled for next year. According to the Home Office, "illegal working and renting are significant pull factors" for migrants undertaking the perilous trek.
