After a lengthy buildup, the new BMW M5 is here. The German automaker has revealed the latest generation of its M5, which adopts a new plug-in hybrid powertrain, making it the most powerful iteration of the iconic super sedan till date. The new BMW M5 retains the 4.4-litre, twin-turbo, V8 engine but now includes an electric motor in the eight-speed automatic transmission, akin to the BMW XM SUV. The total system output is 717bhp and 1,000Nm of torque, which is distributed to all four wheels via BMW’s rear-biased xDrive all-wheel-drive system.

Despite being about half a tonne heavier than its predecessor, BMW says the new M5 can run from zero to 100km/h in just 3.5 seconds. The top speed is limited to 250km/h but can be extended to 305 KMPH with the optional M Driver’s Package. BMW also projects up to 69 kilometres of silent range, thanks to the 18.6kWh battery pack in the car’s underbody. In the electric mode, the BMW M5 can hit speeds up to 140km/h and supports AC charging up to 7.4kW.
