<p>A woman aboard one of Royal Caribbean cruise ships had a lucky escape after she fell down the 10th deck of the ship and into the water, roughly&nbsp;27 nautical miles south of Punta Cana in the Caribbean Sea on Sunday.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The 42-year-old unnamed passenger, a US resident, plunged into the water but managed to survive, following a dramatic hour-long rescue operation where the cruise ship 'Mariner of the Seas' rescue crew quickly jumped into service.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>The crew quickly dispatched a small rescue boat and managed to locate the woman in the vast ocean and safely brought her back on board. The entire incident was caught on camera by the passengers who cheered the woman and the safety crew.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to reports, after the woman fell into the water, passengers used binoculars to help the ship's crew locate the woman.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"After we saw the life rafts or the life preservers and the smoke – I was like, someone just died," said Matthew Kuhn who was on the cruise with his family. and posted the live updates on Twitter</p>

<p>"I think it was amazing to see everyone was on their balcony. Everyone was trying to help, and the crew was very receptive to everyone."</p>

<p>This time, Liang was just short of the 34 points needed to apply to any university in China.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Liang has attempted the exam a dozen times. He was 16 when he first attempted the exam in 1983. In a conversation with a local media outlet, he said how disappointed he was with this year's result and questioned if he could ever achieve his dream.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Chinese millionaire told local news outlet Tianmu News, "I used to say 'I just don't believe I won't make it', but now I'm torn."</p>

<p>He further said, "I have been contemplating whether I should continue. Maybe I do need to reflect on myself. I might give up (next year). If I do attend it next year, I will give up my last name Liang if I fail."</p>

<p>The factory where he worked was also shut down due to bankruptcy. He then opened his own wholesale business, which&nbsp;soon made him&nbsp;more successful as a businessman than a student.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Media reports have mentioned that the man from California, who goes by the username u/lazybear90 on Reddit, donated a lot more and told the story on the subreddit TIFU.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The incident took place in February of last year, but what happened next after this honest mistake is quite heart-warming. The 32-year-old man, who has been identified in the media as Michael, explained what had happened.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While sharing his story, he wrote in the thread that the incident happened soon after he had moved into a new apartment building in San Francisco last year with his wife.&nbsp;</p>

<p>One of the neighbours in the new apartment told him about a charity he managed for a community in Bangladesh, which was on GoFundMe.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He said, "The next day at work, I go on the GoFundMe page and donate $150. Or so I thought" but was shocked when he received a warning from his credit card company about an "unusually large transaction".&nbsp;</p>

<p>He wrote that it appeared he had accidentally started typing his credit card information while the cursor was still in the donation box.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>He wanted to fix the situation, only to realise later that...&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>Michael said he called GoFundMe's support line and spoke to a human operator, who told him that his transaction will be reversed and he will get the money in three to seven business days.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He said that he asked the employee if the charity will be able to see the donation on the GoFundMe page until it is refunded. The employee replied "yes".&nbsp;</p>

<p>After a few drinks at a bar in Germany’s Bremen city, their discussion turned into an argument and eventually led to a wager.</p>

<p>Koch challenged Chalmers that by 2023 someone would discover the mechanism by which the brain’s neurons produce consciousness.</p>

<p>That bet got ultimately settled at an annual meeting of the Association for the Scientific Study of Consciousness (ASSC) in New York City, where Chalmers was declared the winner, reported Nature.</p>

<p>The years-long bet came to an end after a study was presented testing two leading hypotheses about “the neural basis of consciousness”.</p>

<p>These hypotheses were presented by Integrated information theory (IIT) and global network workspace theory (GNWT).</p>

<h2>The theory</h2>

IIT proposed that consciousness is a ‘structure’ in the brain formed by a specific type of neuronal connectivity that is active for as long as a certain experience, such as looking at an image, is occurring. This structure is thought to be found in the posterior cortex, at the back of the brain.</p>

<p>On the other hand, GNWT suggested that consciousness arises when information is broadcast to areas of the brain through an interconnected network. The transmission, according to the theory, happens at the beginning and end of an experience and involves the prefrontal cortex, at the front of the brain.</p>

<p>Six labs tested both of the theories, but the results did not “perfectly match” either of them.</p>

<h2>Winner gets a case of wine</h2>

Chalmers acknowledged that it was always a "relatively good bet" for him and a bold one for Christof. He also agreed that there has been a lot of progress in the field and the scientists will soon find an answer.</p>

<p>“It started off as a very big philosophical mystery,” Chalmers said.</p>

<p>“But over the years, it’s gradually been transmuting into, if not a ‘scientific’ mystery, at least one that we can get a partial grip on scientifically.”</p>

<p>Koch was reluctant to admit defeat, he nevertheless honoured the wager and bought Chalmers a “case of fine Portuguese wine” the day before the ASSC session.</p>

<p>He was also ready to double down on the wager with another 25 years as a window.</p>

<p>Koch is a German-American neurophysiologist and computational neuroscientist. He started his search for the neural footprints of consciousness in the 1980s and has been invested in identifying neurons that are necessary to “generate a feeling of seeing or hearing or wanting.”<br />

<p>According to media reports, all media content posted on Wu's Weibo page since April 2022 appears to have been scrubbed out. The platform's content moderators said they had blocked three verified users for "spreading smears against the development of the securities market" and "hyping up the unemployment rate".</p>

<p>The platform did not give away the full usernames of the blocked accounts but said one of them had a three-character name starting with "Wu" and ending with "Bo", allegedly referring to the journalist.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In one of his regular columns in the Chinese financial market magazine Caixin, Wu made the ominous comparison, which reportedly drew the wrath of the Politburo officials.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The huge army of the unemployed is likely to become a fuse that ignites the powder keg," wrote Wu in a May column that compared the situation with the Great Depression.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Francesca Gino, a prominent Harvard Business School (HBS) professor known for her studies on honesty, has been accused of data fraud. Allegations against Gino surfaced in recent weeks, with claims that she falsified results in several behavioural science studies.</p>

<h2><strong>How did her lies come to light?</strong></h2>

<p>As per the Guardian, Harvard informed Max Bazerman, an HBS professor and co-author of a 2012 paper with Gino, that it believed one of the studies overseen by Gino had falsified results.</p>

<p>The paper&nbsp;in question was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and later retracted. It focused on an experiment involving participants filling out tax and insurance paperwork.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It claimed that participants who signed truthfulness declarations at the top of the page were more honest than those who signed at the bottom.</p>

<p>"Many written forms required by businesses and governments rely on honest reporting. Proof of honest intent is typically provided through signature at the end of, eg, tax returns or insurance policy forms. Still, people sometimes cheat to advance their financial self-interests at great costs to society. We test an easy-to-implement method to discourage dishonesty: signing at the beginning rather than at the end of a self-report, thereby reversing the order of the current practice," said the study's abstract.</p>

<p>According to a report in the Chronicle of Higher Education, Bazerman, Harvard, provided "compelling evidence" of data falsification, including the findings that someone accessed a database and added and altered data.</p>

<h2><strong>More proof?</strong></h2>

<p>In response to the allegations, a blog called DataColoda, run by three behavioural science academics, published a series of posts detailing extensive evidence of alleged fraud in four academic papers co-authored by Gino.</p>

<p>The blog authors shared their concerns with Harvard Business School in 2021 and believe that many more papers authored by Gino may contain fake data.</p>

<p>"We discovered evidence of fraud in papers spanning over a decade, including papers published quite recently (in 2020)," wrote blog authors, ESADE Business School's Uri Simonsohn, University of California, Berkeley’s Leif Nelson, and University of Pennsylvania’s Joseph Simmons.</p>

<p>They said,&nbsp;"In the fall of 2021, we shared our concerns with Harvard Business School. Specifically, we wrote a report about four studies for which we had accumulated the strongest evidence of fraud. We believe that many more Gino-authored papers contain fake data. University of Groningen professor Stijn Arnoldussen said, “The bead must have been a spectacular item as for people then it was an unknown material.”<br />
