Dating has changed in the last 10 years or so, with the most common complaint from women being that men are no longer interested in pursuing them. In fact, they are looking to be treated the same way women usually expect from them. Social media has dubbed this as the "princess treatment", meaning they want the women to take the first step, plan the dates, initiate conversations, go the extra mile, etc. There was a time when men were expected to do the heavy lifting - wooing a woman, planning dates, reaching out first, complimenting her, pitching in for her needs, etc. But today, men are also looking for the same things. Dr Madhu Kotiya, Relationship counsellor, says, “Yes, I think men's expectations have changed quite a bit. There was a time when a man would go out of his way to impress a woman. He would call, plan meetings, bring flowers and find excuses to spend time with her. Today, we see many men expecting women to do these things for them.” Hanish Kumaar, an actor, says, “Yes, I think men want to be wooed too. They also like being pampered, complimented, checked on and made to feel special. Just because men are usually expected to make the first move or put in the effort doesn’t mean they don’t want the same in return.”
The lack of initiative
Madhu says there is a group of men who seem quite happy to enjoy the benefits of a relationship without wanting to get too involved. They will respond when the woman calls, agree to meet when she makes a plan and enjoy her company. But taking the initiative themselves doesn't seem to come naturally to them.

This has left women frustrated, who say they are the ones suggesting where to go, when to meet, and sometimes even initiating every conversation. Madhu says that because of this, after a while, they begin wondering whether the man is genuinely interested or has simply become comfortable being pursued. Pragati, a journalist, says, "Today, men think if she can do it herself, why should I put in the effort? They don't get it - we can do it ourselves, but we want YOU to do it for us." Small thoughtful gestures make us feel valued, she says. "We ask for so little - a pick-up from the office, a random call for a small chai break, a little attention."
The upheaval in dating
It is clear that this gap in expectations and understanding is creating a discord between men and women. Both want to be pursued, and most of the time, they are also willing to put in the work. But somewhere down the line, everything becomes a blurry mess where neither knows what to do or what is even going on.

Damini Grover, Life Coach and Relationship counsellor, says, “The problem is not that men want to be treated as women have traditionally been treated. The problem is when both people want the perks of a relationship without taking on equal responsibility for nurturing it.” She admits that it's perfectly reasonable for a man to want his partner to plan dates, initiate affection and be thoughtful. "But if he expects these gestures without making the same efforts himself, then we are not really moving towards equality," Damini says.
Why are men demanding to be pursued?
Dr Madhu cites a major societal shift for this change in the dynamic between men and women. "Women are financially independent, have their own social lives and are no longer waiting for a man to make every decision. Men have grown up seeing this change, so naturally their expectations are different from those of the previous generation," Dr Madhu says. So now, some men feel that if a woman can take care of herself, she can also take the initiative in a relationship. Meanwhile, Damini says that some of them are simply confused about who should initiate, pursue or take ownership of moving a relationship forward. But that only works to an extent. Just because women are independent does not mean that they no longer wish to be wooed or pursued. This is similar to how men want it, and they too are just as independent and perfectly fine living their own lives.

Pragati says women still want to be wooed. "Yes, we are independent in today's world. But at the end of the day, we are just girls who want to be loved, cared for, and wooed." Another likely reason for this shift is how easy dating apps have made finding someone. Dr Madhu says that there is certainly a visible change in how comfortable men have become with being pursued themselves. "When meeting new people becomes relatively easy, the entire approach to dating changes. People have more choices, but sometimes less patience. Instead of taking time to know someone, they may move on at the first sign of disappointment." Some have also become cautious because of their past experiences. They may have been rejected, taken for granted or hurt in an earlier relationship.
What men want?
Hanish says, "I think most men want to feel wanted and appreciated, just like women do. They might not always say it openly, but small things like initiating conversations, planning dates or remembering little details can mean a lot to them." "At the end of the day, everyone wants to feel loved and valued. The only difference is that not everyone expresses it or expects it in the same way." An unnamed Redditor says, "Men do not want to be taken for granted. Men also don't want to be solely responsible for a woman's emotional well-being and happiness. I want to see equal effort from a woman. And yes, we also love compliments, as that shows how important we are to them." Dr Madhu says, "I think men are becoming more open about their emotional needs. They want to feel appreciated. They want a woman who notices their achievements, understands their pressures and doesn't constantly judge them for what they haven't accomplished."
What women want?
Women say they want to feel valued and special in a relationship. For them, princess treatment does not mean they want the man to follow them around or spoil them with expensive things. "I only want to be treated with respect and equality. If princess treatment is expected from one end, they should be willing to provide it as well. It cannot be a one-way street for both men and women," Tanya, a PR professional, says. "All we want is to be noticed, to be missed, to know that 'my man is missing me and doing things for me.' That feeling is next level of satisfaction, something we can't buy ourselves," Pragati says. Dr Madhu agrees, and says, "A woman today doesn't need a man to fulfil every little wish of hers. She can take care of herself and buy whatever she likes. But when her partner remembers something she mentioned casually or does something special without being asked, it makes her happy. It shows that he pays attention to her." Damini says, "Emotional availability, consistency, shared responsibility, respect and consideration matter. This is more than some guy setting up some fancy date or buying you flowers."
What can be done
If both men and women no longer have traditional expectations from each other, what is the problem? It has a lot to do with emotionally protecting themselves. People are also more conscious of protecting themselves emotionally. Nobody wants to appear too interested or vulnerable. So they hold back, says Dr Madhu. In the process, a perfectly good connection can lose its warmth. When the question of emotional labour enters the scene, it can start to feel unequal if it is always the one person initiating difficult conversations, planning quality time, anticipating needs and repairing conflicts. Damini says, "I think the bigger shift is ultimately toward relationships where both people want to feel chosen, valued and cared for. Perhaps the conversation needs to shift from who should chase whom, to what mutual effort, emotional maturity and partnership really looks like."

Men want women to pursue them, do some heavy lifting, and basically treat them the way women expect to be treated in relationships. Taking initiative has become a task, as both men and women feel hesitant to take the first step. What has led to these changes?

As this year’s Navratri celebrations are about to end, the festival will leave behind memories of devotion, the sounds of folk instruments, colourful outfits, festive music, and energetic Garba nights until next year. For nine days, devotees honour Maa Durga in all her nine forms at home, with hearts full of emotion and devotion. Apart from following the traditions and rituals, playing Garba with your friends and family is one of the joyous parts of the festival, but have you ever wondered why it is traditionally performed in a circle? The formation is more than just a dance pattern, as it carries deep spiritual and cultural significance.
Why is Garba performed in a circle?
The circular movements of the Garba are full of spiritual significance. Garba is a devotional dance performed in honour of Shakti, the feminine divine energy, commonly during Navratri. The circle is often associated with the cycle of life, the cyclical nature of time, symbolising birth, death and rebirth. The formation reflects the idea of a life that is constantly changing and has no beginning or end, suggesting that divine energy remains constant. Also Read: Navratri 2026: 9 days, 9 forms of Goddess Durga and 9 colours- Complete list

Usually, people walk or play around a central object, like a decorated earthen pot with a lighted diya or an image of the goddess Amba. The lamp in the centre is symbolic of the divine light and energy and the circle of their devotion to the Goddess.
What does the word 'Garba ' mean?
We know Garba as a dance form since our childhood, but the name itself carries its own symbolism. It comes from the Sanskrit word garbha, meaning womb, and is associated with life, creation, and feminine energy.

Navratri 2026 comes to an end. Know the significance of Garba’s circular movements and how this age-old tradition celebrates life, devotion, and unity.

Diwali is almost here, and this is the time to light up our homes and celebrate with loved ones. But the days following the festival can leave many cities struggling with hazy skies, rising pollution levels and air that is difficult to breathe. Firecrackers add to the problem, alongside the falling temperatures, vehicle emissions, construction dust and other sources of pollution. For many people, the effects begin with burning eyes, a scratchy throat or an irritating cough. However, the impact of polluted air is not always immediately noticeable and can extend beyond these initial symptoms. To understand the health risks associated with air pollution and how to stay safe during smog season, WION reached out to doctors, who explain its effects on the body and share simple ways to protect yourself and your family.
How does smog affect your body?
Dr Neerav Tyagi, HOD of Pulmonology at Manipal Hospital, Ghaziabad, explains that smog is a combination of fog and smoke, with pollution from sources such as crop burning, firecrackers, construction activities and industrial waste contributing to the problem. The health consequences, he warns, can extend well beyond a seasonal cough or breathing difficulty. Air pollution does not affect only the lungs. Fine particulate matter and harmful gases can enter the respiratory system, with some tiny particles passing into the bloodstream and affecting other parts of the body. Also Read: Wearing false eyelashes daily? Doctor reveals how it could be harming your eyes Dr Tyagi explains that the effects can build up gradually. Frequent headaches, burning eyes, throat irritation and disturbed sleep may develop over time and are often dismissed as minor discomforts.Long-term exposure to polluted air is associated with a number of serious health problems, including asthma, chronic bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), lung cancer, heart disease and stroke. Research has also linked air pollution to kidney problems and an increased risk of cognitive decline, including dementia. The damage may not always be obvious in the early stages, which is why reducing exposure matters even when you feel healthy. Dr Dinraj T V, Consultant Thoracic Surgeon at Narayana Health City, Bengaluru, says the early signs of smog exposure can include eye and throat irritation, coughing, breathlessness, chest tightness and unusual fatigue. “People with respiratory or cardiovascular conditions may notice their symptoms worsening, even after brief exposure. Persistent coughing or difficulty breathing should not be ignored,” he says.
Heart, brain and kidneys also need protection
The lungs are often the first organs people associate with air pollution, but the health risks extend much further. According to Dr Tyagi, polluted air can affect the brain, potentially contributing to strokes, memory problems and dementia in older age. The eyes, nose and throat may experience redness, swelling and itching, while prolonged exposure can also affect kidney function and increase the risk of chronic kidney disease. Air pollution can be especially concerning for the heart. Fine particles entering the bloodstream can trigger inflammation, raise blood pressure and place additional strain on the cardiovascular system.Over time, polluted air can damage blood vessels, contribute to the narrowing of arteries and accelerate the buildup of fatty deposits. If a blood clot blocks a blood vessel supplying the heart or brain, it can trigger a heart attack or stroke. Air pollution may also interfere with the heart's electrical activity, increasing the risk of an irregular heartbeat. Dr Dinraj stresses, "People with existing heart conditions should limit outdoor activity during periods of high pollution, avoid strenuous exercise outdoors, use a well-fitted N95 mask when outside, and take prescribed medication regularly. They should monitor symptoms closely and seek medical advice if their condition worsens." Also Read: Europe's most enchanting Christmas markets to add to your winter travel list Pregnant women and children also need particular attention. Dr Tyagi notes that exposure to polluted air is associated with preterm birth, low birth weight and impaired lung growth in children.
Is a morning walk safe during smog season?
A morning walk or jog may be part of your daily routine, but it is worth reconsidering outdoor exercise when pollution levels are high. Pollution can remain trapped close to the ground, while traffic and weather conditions may contribute to poor air quality. Dr Rajesh Kumar Gupta, Director of the Yashoda Institute of Respiratory Medicine and Interventional Pulmonology at Yashoda Medicity, explains, "The result is irritation of the airways and symptom aggravation, especially in those with asthma, COPD, or other lung conditions.” His advice is to check the Air Quality Index (AQI) before heading outdoors and avoid outdoor exercise when the air quality is poor or worse. On heavily polluted days, indoor exercise may be a better option.
Should you keep your windows open in the morning?
Opening windows is usually considered a simple way to freshen up a home. During smog season, however, the timing matters. Dr Harish Kumar Verma, Director of Pulmonary Medicine and Critical Care at ShardaCare – Healthcity, cautions, "Opening the windows when the air is bad can bring fine particles into your homes and lungs.” Therefore, check local AQI readings and open windows when outdoor air quality improves. Keep windows and doors closed as much as practical during periods of high pollution. Additionally, smoking, burning candles or mosquito coils, and cooking fumes can also worsen the air inside your home. Also Read: Difficulty walking or losing balance? Experts explain signs of spine problems Using an exhaust fan that vents outdoors, where appropriate, and wiping surfaces with a damp cloth can help reduce indoor pollutants and dust.
Do air purifiers really help?
Air purifiers can be helpful during the smog season. However, choosing the right device and using it correctly are important. “A HEPA filter air purifier with the right size for the room can clean the air of particulate matter like PM2.5 in a closed room,” said Dr Gupta. Its effectiveness depends on factors such as room size, clean air delivery rate (CADR), filter condition and the amount of outdoor air entering the space. Dr Verma also recommends a good-quality HEPA air purifier for bedrooms and other commonly used areas. “It's important to remember that indoor plants are great to have but they're not a solution to indoor air pollution.” Although some laboratory studies suggest plants can absorb certain airborne pollutants, their effect is too small to meaningfully clean the air in an average home. Overwatering plants can also encourage mould growth, which may trigger allergies or asthma in some people. Air purifiers cannot remove every gaseous pollutant, and they do not make a home completely pollution-free. Keep doors and windows closed when outdoor air quality is poor.
Can a cloth mask protect you from smog?
Not all masks offer the same level of protection against air pollution. Dr Gupta explains that ordinary cloth masks and surgical masks do little to filter out the tiniest airborne particles, including PM2.5, which can travel deep into the lungs. “A tight-fitting N95 (or similar) respirator worn over your nose and mouth and genuine can be effective at filtering PM2.5.” A respirator must fit properly to work effectively. Gaps around the face, an uncovered nose or mouth, and facial hair interfering with the seal can reduce its effectiveness. Even a well-fitting N95 mask does not provide complete protection from pollution. Dr Gupta advises limiting outdoor exposure, especially for people with asthma, COPD or existing heart conditions. Also Read: Did you know Winnie-the-Pooh was inspired by a real $20 Canadian war bear?
Tips to stay healthy from Diwali’s smog
Daily AQI Readings Check the local Air Quality Index each day, especially before traveling, exercising or spending time outdoors. When pollution levels are poor or worse, reduce unnecessary outdoor activity and shift workouts indoors. Reduce indoor pollution Keep windows and doors closed when outdoor air quality is poor. Use a properly sized HEPA air purifier in frequently used rooms, avoid smoking indoors and minimise pollution from candles, mosquito coils and cooking fumes. Ventilate your home when outdoor air quality improves. Wear the right mask when outdoors If you must go outside during periods of high pollution, a genuine, well-fitting N95 or equivalent respirator can help filter fine particles. Regular cloth and surgical masks do not effectively block PM2.5.Even with a mask on, it’s still important to reduce exposure.” For those with pre-existing health conditions People with asthma, COPD, heart disease or other chronic conditions should continue to take their prescribed medicines and keep their inhalers handy, if they use them. Avoid strenuous outdoor activity when pollution is high and seek medical advice if symptoms worsen. When to seek medical advice Do not dismiss persistent coughing, increasing breathlessness or chest discomfort as normal effects of smog. If breathlessness persists, the cough worsens, or chest discomfort develops, medical attention should be sought, Dr Dinraj said. If you have sudden chest pain, severe difficulty breathing, dizziness or fainting, get medical help immediately. Sudden weakness can also signal a serious medical emergency.

Tips to stay healthy from Diwali’s smog Daily AQI Readings Check the local Air Quality Index each day, especially before traveling, exercising or spending time outdoors.
