An Israeli far-right lawmaker has come under fire after using a sledgehammer to damage a Palestinian memorial in the West Bank, an incident that the Israeli military said was carried out without authorisation but that residents fear could trigger more violence. MK Zvi Sukkot, a member of the ultranationalist Religious Zionist Party, travelled to the village of Madama, south of Nablus, on Tuesday (Aug 25) as part of what had been presented as a tour of West Bank villages. Sukkot shares footage of the destruction of the memorial Footage shared by Sukkot showed him at the site of a memorial honouring Palestinians killed in past conflicts. He said the monument "glorified terrorism" and argued that it should be removed. "Every child who sees every day a giant monument that glorifies murderers of Jews will dream of being a terrorist," Sukkot wrote on X.

Grief-like behaviour seen in other species

Scientists say similar behaviour has been observed in other cetaceans as well. In one widely known case, an orca named Tahlequah was seen carrying her dead calf for more than two weeks near British Columbia in 2018. Experts said that was an extreme example, but not an isolated one.

Also read | Google Earth accidentally creates AI's next misinformation nightmare. Researchers have documented nonhuman primates, including chimpanzees, gorillas and baboons, carrying dead infants for extended periods.

According to doctoral researcher Abigail McClain, such cases raise important questions about how animals understand death. "Again and again we see mothers carrying infants for days to weeks, sometimes even when there is evidence that the mother knows the infant has died," she wrote.

A natural response, experts say

For Lauren Brandkamp of Whale and Dolphin Conservation North America, the reaction should not come as a surprise.

"It’s a natural behavioural response in animals," she said. "They form these bonds with their offspring, with other members of their pod or their species. And when a life is lost, they also experience that kind of mourning and sadness."

The video of Fraggle has now become part of a wider conversation about the emotional lives of animals, and how much more there is still to learn about grief in the natural world.

"What is most remarkable in these cases is that the mothers don’t have hands and live in an aquatic medium where they have to regularly surface to breathe as well as hunt," Susana Monsó, a philosopher and the author of "Playing Possum: How Animals Understand Death," told The New York Times. "This makes holding on to the corpse something very difficult and shows a strong motivation on the part of the mother."

Israeli settlers could be added to the UN's 'list of shame'

The dispute centres on a series of UN reports examining the impact of the conflict in Gaza and the wider Israeli-Palestinian crisis on children. This week, Frazier presented a report warning that Israeli settler groups could face inclusion in the so-called list of shame annexes for alleged violations, if violations against Palestinian children continue at current levels. The report cited a sharp rise in incidents involving children in the occupied Palestinian territories.

According to the UN's annual Children and Armed Conflict report, 38,558 grave violations against children were documented worldwide in 2025, affecting more than 24,000 children. The organisation described it as the highest number recorded since monitoring began in 1996.

Could Israeli settler groups be blacklisted?

The report attributed 9,465 grave violations to Israeli forces and 326 to Israeli settlers. It also listed Hamas among groups responsible for abuses. At the time, Guterres said he was "deeply alarmed" by what he called a "staggering" increase in violations affecting Palestinian children and warned that settler groups could be formally blacklisted if similar patterns continue next year.

Israel has strongly rejected the findings. After the release of a separate UN report last month, Israeli officials accused the organisation of institutional bias and announced plans to cut ties with Guterres' office for the remainder of his term.

Tempers flared at the United Nations after Israeli envoy Danny Danon interrupted a meeting to attack UN officials over reports on Palestinian children in conflict zones. The exchange escalated into a shouting match as officials defended findings they said were based on verified evidence.

Two New York City plainclothes detectives have been stripped of their guns and badges after a seven-minute video captured them repeatedly punching a man inside a Brooklyn liquor store. They had mistaken the man, identified as Timothy L. Brown, a home health aide and security guard, for a drug dealer. However, he later turned out to have no involvement in any crime. Reacting to the disturbing video, New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani said that the violence used by the NYPD officers was "extremely disturbing and unacceptable". Writing on social media, he noted that "officers should never treat a person this way." Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch described the footage as "extremely disturbing" and confirmed an Internal Affairs Bureau investigation was underway.

What happened in New York?

The shocking incident happened Tuesday (Apr 14) afternoon at BK Wine Depot on Hoyt Street in Boerum Hill. The two Brooklyn North narcotics detectives believed the man matched the description of a suspect seen making a drug sale nearby: a white T-shirt, shorts, and light green shorts. They followed him into the store and attempted to arrest him, but he refused to be handcuffed.

What followed was captured on a cellphone by a witness named Abelee Moran, who posted the footage online. The video shows the detectives struggling with the man near the back of the store, punching him repeatedly, pushing his head into a refrigerator door, and then tumbling with him into a display of wine bottles that shattered across the floor.
They got the wrong guy.

Later, it was found that the man was not carrying any drugs, and he was not the person that the NYPD was looking for. The NYPD later confirmed that the man had no involvement in drug sales.

A store worker said he was a regular customer. A friend said he lives across the street in the Gowanus Houses and works as a security guard. "He came home, showered, changed his clothes, and went to enjoy himself," she said. "He had a day off the next day,y and this is what you do to him?"

The man needed several stitches for the leg wound. His friend said his nose was broken. "He can barely speak," she said.

Despite the violence, the man was given a desk appearance ticket for resisting arrest and obstruction of governmental administration. However, the Brooklyn District Attorney's office announced it would not be prosecuting either charge.

A case of police brutality?

The detectives, one of whom identified himself in the video as Det. Michael Algerio, a 13-year NYPD veteran, was not wearing a body camera and did not have a radio. Neither had immediately identified themselves as police officers when they entered the store, according to witness Moran. "They just started attacking him," she said. "He was just trying to block the hits."

When a witness inside the store asked the second detective for his name, he replied: "My name is shut up! I'm trying to make a call right now because this guy is bleeding out!"

Police union officials pushed back on the public condemnation. Scott Munro, head of the Detectives Endowment Association, cautioned against judging the officers based solely on video. "Narcotics detectives arrest you and tell you to put your hands behind your back, and you don't comply, what do you think happens?" he said. PBA president Pat Hendry accused Mayor Mamdani of rushing to judgment.

Outside the liquor store on Wednesday, residents and activists gathered to protest. Hawk Newsome of Black Lives Matter Greater New York called for the detectives to be fired and criminally charged. "Imagine you're beating someone mercilessly and you're caught on camera, and you don't care," he said. “You have the bravado to keep going.”

India-US trade deal

In a recent move, India and the US signed a trade deal, lowering tariffs on New Delhi. Notably, the fact sheet released by the White House does not mention anything concrete on India’s commitment to stop buying Russian oil, which had appeared earlier in an executive order signed by Trump. The sole mention of this can be found in a brief statement acknowledging that Trump “agreed to remove the additional 25% tariff on imports from India in recognition of India’s commitment to stop purchasing Russian Federation oil.”

The agreement will see the United States reduce so-called reciprocal tariffs on Indian goods to 18 per cent from the earlier 25 per cent level, though the timeline for implementing that reduction has not yet been finalised. Meanwhile, India will eliminate or reduce duties on all US industrial goods and a wide range of agricultural products.

Social media platforms like X and Instagram are full of breathtaking footage of what appears to be the frozen Niagara Falls. When the temperature falls, mist crystallises into floating ice shards, railings turn white, and the gorge takes on a muffled quiet. While the Falls do not freeze solid, extreme cold paired with Arctic winds creates spectacular ice formations that transform the landscape into a winter fairy tale.
