US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has strongly defended President <a href="https://www.wionews.com/donald-trump" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Donald Trump&rsquo;s</a> approach to brokering peace between Ukraine and Russia, arguing that his efforts would have gotten him a Nobel Prize if he were a Democrat.
Speaking on ABC News&rsquo;s This Week, Rubio questioned the criticism aimed at Trump, saying, &ldquo;Shouldn&rsquo;t we all be happy that we have a president who&rsquo;s trying to stop wars and prevent them instead of start them?&rdquo;

He went on to add, &ldquo;I just don&rsquo;t get it. I really don&rsquo;t, other than the fact that it&rsquo;s Donald J. Trump.&rdquo;
Rubio suggested that Trump&rsquo;s actions would be viewed differently under another administration, adding, &ldquo;If this was a Democrat that was doing this, everyone would be saying, &lsquo;Well, he&rsquo;s on his way to the Nobel Peace Prize. This is absurd.&rsquo;&rdquo;
<h2>A shift in strategy</h2>
Rubio defended Trump&rsquo;s diplomatic approach, which he described as a break from years of hostile rhetoric towards Russian President Vladimir Putin. Instead, he said, Trump is attempting to negotiate an end to the war.
&ldquo;We are trying to end a war. You cannot end a war unless both sides come to the table, starting with the Russians. And that, that is the point the president has made. And we have to do whatever we can to try to bring them to the table to see if it&rsquo;s even possible,&rdquo; Rubio said.

Rubio&rsquo;s comments followed a tense Oval Office meeting on Friday between Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Zelensky had travelled to Washington to discuss a mineral deal, which Trump has called a crucial step towards a possible ceasefire. However, the talks quickly deteriorated when Zelensky suggested Vance visit Ukraine to witness the devastation firsthand and insisted that Russia was responsible for the ongoing conflict.

During the public portion of the meeting, Trump and Vance openly criticised Zelensky, with Vance accusing him of engaging in &ldquo;publicity tours.&rdquo; Trump bluntly told the Ukrainian leader, &ldquo;You&rsquo;re not really in a good position right now.&rdquo; At one point, Vance pressed Zelensky, asking, &ldquo;Have you said thank you once?&rdquo;
The exchange escalated further when Trump issued a stark warning: &ldquo;Make a deal or we are out,&rdquo; hinting that the US could withdraw its support for Kyiv if negotiations did not progress.

‘If he were a Democrat’: Marco Rubio says Trump would have won ‘Nobel Prize’ for Ukraine peace efforts

Iran&rsquo;s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Sayyid Ali Khamenei on Saturday (March 01) reacted to the dramatic meeting between Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky, which erupted into a heated confrontation at the White House.
Taking to X on Saturday, Khamenei criticised Western backing for certain governments, calling it an illusion. "The first lesson from the situation in Ukraine is that the support of Western states for countries and governments that are their puppets is a mirage. All governments must understand this. Those governments that rely on the USA and Europe should look at Ukraine's current situation," he wrote.

'Today’s Ukraine is yesterday’s Afghan': Did Iran's Khamenei predict US' treatment of Zelensky 3 years back?

US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday (Feb 28) engaged in what could be defined as a history-making moment in the relations between both countries.
But Trump's hostility towards Zelensky and Ukraine is not a newfound issue and can be traced back to his first term in the White House.
In 2019, Trump faced impeachment over allegations that he withheld nearly $400 million in US security aid to Ukraine in an attempt to pressure Kyiv into investigating Joe Biden, then the former vice president, and his son, Hunter Biden, ahead of the 2020 presidential election.

Trump claimed that Biden had influenced Ukraine to fire a prosecutor who was investigating Burisma, an energy company where Hunter Biden sat on the board. However, no concrete evidence of wrongdoing by either Biden ever surfaced.
A transcript of a phone call between Trump and Zelensky, dated 25 July 2019, revealed that Trump had urged the Ukrainian leader to work with his personal lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, and US Attorney General William Barr on the matter.
&ldquo;There&rsquo;s a lot of talk about Biden&rsquo;s son, that Biden stopped the prosecution and a lot of people want to find out about that so whatever you can do with the Attorney General would be great. Biden went around bragging that he stopped the prosecution so if you can look into it &hellip; It sounds horrible to me,&rdquo; Trump stated, according to the document.

Beyond the Bidens, Trump also wanted Ukraine to investigate whether it had played a role in hacking the Democratic National Committee in 2016, a claim that contradicted US intelligence findings, which pointed to Russian involvement.
For Zelensky, the situation was complicated. Ukraine depended heavily on American military aid, and any delay or withdrawal of support could have had serious consequences. During the call, Zelensky appeared to comply with Trump&rsquo;s request.
&ldquo;Since we have won the absolute majority in our Parliament, the next prosecutor general will be 100% my person, my candidate,&rdquo; Zelensky said.

He continued, &ldquo;He or she will look into the situation specifically to the company that you mentioned in this issue. The issue of the investigation of the case is actually the issue of making sure to restore the honesty so we will take care of that and will work on the investigation of the case.&rdquo;
However, just days before Zelensky was expected to announce the investigation on CNN, a political firestorm erupted in Washington over the Trump administration&rsquo;s threat to withhold aid. The decision to freeze the funds was swiftly reversed, the money was sent, and Zelensky ultimately cancelled the interview, according to The New York Times.
Trump repeatedly denied pressuring Zelensky, insisting, &ldquo;there was no quid pro quo.&rdquo; Yet, multiple US officials later testified that they had been informed the aid would only be released if Ukraine launched an investigation into the Bidens.

Gordon Sondland, the then-US ambassador to the European Union, stated that the push for an inquiry into the Bidens came at Trump&rsquo;s &ldquo;express direction.&rdquo; He also testified that an invitation for Zelensky to visit the White House had been tied to the launch of the investigation.
Two weeks after Trump approved the aid, the two leaders appeared together at a press conference during the United Nations General Assembly. When asked whether he had been pressured, Zelensky gave a diplomatic response that may not have entirely reassured Trump.
&ldquo;We had, I think, a good phone call &hellip; It was normal. We spoke about many things. I think you read that nobody pushed me,&rdquo; Zelensky stated.
Trump, standing beside him, added, &ldquo;In other words, no pressure.&rdquo;
During the impeachment hearings, Kurt Volker, who served as US special envoy to Ukraine, testified that Trump had described Ukraine as &ldquo;a corrupt country, full of terrible people.&rdquo;
Though the US Senate acquitted Trump in 2020, the ordeal left a lasting impact as it happened just months before his failed re-election bid. Many believe the controversy may have influenced some undecided voters.

Trump tried to use Zelensky against Biden but it backfired - What fueled his anger towards 'terrible' Ukraine

Russia on Saturday (March 1) labelled Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky&rsquo;s visit to the United States a diplomatic disaster after his meeting with former US President&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/donald-trump" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Donald Trump</a> descended into a heated argument.
Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for Russia&rsquo;s foreign ministry, strongly criticised Zelensky, calling his conduct in Washington &ldquo;outrageously boorish&rdquo; and accusing him of being &ldquo;the most dangerous threat to the world community as an irresponsible warmonger.&rdquo;

Zakharova went on to claim that Zelensky was &ldquo;obsessed&rdquo; with continuing the war, insisting that Russia&rsquo;s objectives in Ukraine remained unchanged. &ldquo;Russia&rsquo;s unchanging goals remain the demilitarisation and denazification of Ukraine, as well as the recognition of the existing realities on the ground,&rdquo; she said.
&ldquo;The visit of the head of the neo-Nazi regime, V. Zelensky, to Washington on February 28 is a complete political and diplomatic failure of the Kyiv regime,&rdquo; she further said. Moscow has repeatedly accused Ukraine of harbouring &ldquo;neo-Nazism,&rdquo; a claim dismissed by Western nations and Kyiv as baseless propaganda.
<h2>Zelensky clashes with Trump and Vance</h2>
During his visit, Zelensky was expected to finalise a minerals agreement with the US. However, the talks reportedly turned confrontational, with Trump and Vice President JD Vance accusing the Ukrainian leader of being &ldquo;disrespectful.&rdquo;

<h2>European leaders rally behind Zelensky</h2>
Despite the tensions in Washington, Zelensky continues to receive strong backing from European leaders. German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier was highly critical of Trump&rsquo;s handling of the meeting, calling the incident in the Oval Office deeply troubling.
&ldquo;Diplomacy fails when negotiating partners are humiliated in front of the whole world,&rdquo; Steinmeier told Germany&rsquo;s DPA news agency.
&ldquo;The scene in the White House yesterday took my breath away. I would never have believed that we would one day have to protect Ukraine from the USA,&rdquo; he added.

In a joint message on social media, they encouraged him to stay strong. &ldquo;Be strong, be brave, be fearless,&rdquo; they wrote, vowing to continue working towards a just and lasting peace.
French President Emmanuel Macron reiterated that Russia was the true aggressor in the war and defended the decision to support Ukraine. &ldquo;We were all right to help Ukraine and sanction Russia three years ago and to continue to do so,&rdquo; Macron said. 'Irresponsible warmonger': Russia labels Zelensky's 'historic' meeting with Trump 'complete failure'

Foreign intelligence agencies, including those of Russia and China, are stepping up efforts to recruit US federal employees working in national security, particularly those who have recently been dismissed or fear they may soon lose their jobs, according to a CNN report.
The move appears to be an attempt to take advantage of mass layoffs within the federal workforce under the Trump administration and DOGE's cost cutting efforts.
Also read: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/trump-zelensky-meet-us-president-donald-trump-ukraine-vladimir-putin-trump-impeachment-8766547">&lsquo;What does Putin have on him?&rsquo; Key witness accuses Trump of betraying Zelensky as both&nbsp;leaders&nbsp;meet</a>
Sources told CNN that intelligence services from Russia and China are focusing on former employees with security clearances, as well as probationary workers at risk of termination.
These individuals may possess valuable insights into US critical infrastructure and government operations. At least two countries have already launched recruitment websites and are aggressively reaching out to federal employees via LinkedIn, the sources added.
A document from the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) suggests the intelligence community is &ldquo;highly confident&rdquo; that foreign adversaries are seeking to recruit laid-off workers, taking advantage of the administration&rsquo;s cost-cutting plans.

&ldquo;The adversaries think the employees are at their most vulnerable right now. Out of a job, bitter about being fired, etc.,&rdquo; one of the sources told CNN.
Another familiar with recent US intelligence assessments, told CNN, &ldquo;It doesn&rsquo;t take a lot of imagination to see that these cast-aside federal workers with a wealth of institutional knowledge represent staggeringly attractive targets to the intelligence services of our competitors and adversaries.&rdquo;
The CIA has been discussing the risks and potential countermeasures in recent weeks. However, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard has framed these discussions as a form of disloyalty.
Speaking on Fox News&rsquo; Jesse Watters show, Gabbard criticised those involved in raising concerns, &ldquo;I am curious about how they think this is a good tactic to keep their job. They&rsquo;re exposing themselves essentially by making this indirect threat using their propaganda arm. Their loyalty is not at all to America. It is not to the American people or the Constitution. It is to themselves.&rdquo;

She further stated, &ldquo;And these are exactly the kind of people that we need to root out, get rid of, so that the patriots who do work in this area, who are committed to our core mission, can actually focus on that.&rdquo;
<h2>Major layoffs in CIA and the Defence Department</h2>
Meanwhile, both the CIA and the Defence Department are considering major reductions in personnel. A Pentagon memo last week indicated that over 5,000 probationary employees, many of whom have worked for a year or less, could face termination in the near future. The CIA has already dismissed more than 20 officers involved in diversity initiatives, many of whom are now contesting their dismissals in court.

They’re exposing themselves essentially by making this indirect threat using their propaganda arm. Their loyalty is not at all to America. It is not to the American people or the Constitution. It is to themselves.” Also read: Elon Musk demands account of 'hundreds of billions of dollars sent to Ukraine' after Trump-Zelensky clash She further stated, “And these are exactly the kind of people that we need to root out, get rid of, so that the patriots who do work in this area, who are committed to our core mission, can actually focus on that.” Major layoffs in CIA and the Defence Department Meanwhile, both the CIA and the Defence Department are considering major reductions in personnel. A Pentagon memo last week indicated that over 5,000 probationary employees, many of whom have worked for a year or less, could face termination in the near future. The CIA has already dismissed more than 20 officers involved in diversity initiatives, many of whom are now contesting their dismissals in court. (With inputs from agencies)

‘You're not winning this war’: Trump warns Zelensky in explosive Oval Office showdown

In his first comments after meeting with US President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky thanked his US counterpart - and Americans - several times over.
This comes after Trump earlier told Zelensky he should be "thankful" for US support, while Vice-President JD Vance accused him of not saying 'thank you' even once during their meeting.

Here's what Zelensky said: "Thank you America, thank you for your support, thank you for this visit. Thank you @POTUS, Congress, and the American people." "Ukraine needs just and lasting peace, and we are working exactly for that," he added in the social media post.
<h2>Trump vs Zelensky showdown</h2>
During the meeting, Trump accused Zelensky of "gambling with World War III", pointing his finger at the Ukrainian leader.&nbsp;
"What you are doing is disrespectful to the country - this country that's backed you far more than a lot of people said they should have," Trump said.
Zelensky calmly interjected, saying, "I'm with all respect for your country".
In the middle of it, Vance said that "diplomacy was needed to end the war, to which Zelensky asked "What kind of diplomacy". Following this, the US president accused him of being "disrespectful" in the president's office.&nbsp;

As Zelensky tried to make his argument, Trump intervened and said, "Don&rsquo;t tell us what we&rsquo;re gonna feel. You&rsquo;re in no position to dictate what we&rsquo;re going to feel &hellip; You&rsquo;ve allowed yourself to be in a very bad position &hellip; You don&rsquo;t have the cards right now with us."

The Ukrainian leader tried to interject but Trump waved his hands. "No, no, you've done a lot of talking", he said. "Your country is in big trouble," he repeated.

'Thanks and thanks': Trump wanted a ‘thank you,’ Zelensky gives him four in first remarks after fiery debate

The White House has confirmed that former US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy did not finalise a mineral agreement during their discussions on Friday.
A senior US official, speaking to Reuters, stated that while Trump had not ruled out such a deal, it would only be considered when Ukraine was ready for a constructive discussion on the matter.

Their talks at the White House were expected to lead to a deal granting the United States rights to rare-earth and other essential minerals, forming part of a broader effort to support Ukraine&rsquo;s recovery following a potential peace agreement with Russia.

White House expelled Russian journalist in the middle of Trump Zelensky meeting - Here’s why

A witness from Donald Trump&rsquo;s first impeachment has suggested that the former US president may have been compromised by Russia. This comes as Trump and Zelensky are meeting in Washington to discuss mineral deal, ceasefire and more.
Alexander Vindman, a retired US Army lieutenant colonel who testified against Trump in 2019, voiced his concerns during an interview with MSNBC&rsquo;s Morning Joe on Tuesday (28 February). He accused Trump of betraying Ukraine to serve Russian President Vladimir Putin&rsquo;s interests.

&ldquo;It&rsquo;s disgusting &ndash; up is down, down is up,&rdquo; Vindman said.
&ldquo;I&rsquo;m not big into conspiracies because I see government as a leaky sieve &ndash; things just don&rsquo;t stay secret. But now I&rsquo;m starting to wonder, what does Putin have on Trump that he&rsquo;s willing to bend over so hard, to bend over backwards to really support Putin&rsquo;s agenda? It doesn&rsquo;t make a huge amount of sense. He&rsquo;s not getting anything for it right now. He&rsquo;s giving away the farm,&rdquo; he added.
<h2>Trump&rsquo;s first impeachment</h2>
Trump was impeached in 2019 over allegations that he withheld nearly $400 million in US military aid to Ukraine while pressursing its president, Volodymyr Zelensky, to investigate Joe Biden, then a former vice president, and his son, Hunter. The inquiry centred on Trump&rsquo;s claim that Biden had influenced the dismissal of a Ukrainian prosecutor who was investigating Burisma, an energy company where Hunter Biden sat on the board. However, no solid evidence of wrongdoing by either Biden ever surfaced.

<h2>Questions over Trump&rsquo;s stance on Ukraine</h2>
Vindman pointed out that Trump has insisted on controlling half of Ukraine&rsquo;s natural resources and key infrastructure in exchange for peace, yet he has made no demands of Russia and refuses to hold Putin accountable for the 2022 invasion.
&ldquo;I&rsquo;m not sure what kind of deal he&rsquo;s making, where he&rsquo;s giving everything that his opponent wants, nothing in return&mdash;maybe the promise, the dangle of something in the future,&rdquo; Vindman said.

World: Trump was impeached in 2019 over allegations that he withheld nearly $400 million in US military aid to Ukraine while pressuring its president, Volodymyr Zelensky, to investigate Joe Biden, then a former vice president, and his son, Hunter.

A witness from Donald Trump’s first impeachment has suggested that the former US president may have been compromised by Russia. This comes as Trump and Zelensky are meeting in Washington to discuss mineral deal, ceasefire and more. Alexander Vindman, a retired US Army lieutenant colonel who testified against Trump in 2019, voiced his concerns during an interview with MSNBC’s Morning Joe on Tuesday (28 February). He accused Trump of betraying Ukraine to serve Russian President Vladimir Putin’s interests. He’s not getting anything for it right now. He’s giving away the farm,” he added. ‘What does Putin have on him?’ Key witness accuses Trump of betraying Zelensky as both leaders meet

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in the United States on Thursday night (27 February) for discussions with US President Donald Trump. The key focus of their meeting is a significant mineral agreement between the two nations, which has been widely anticipated.
<h2>What does the deal involve?</h2>
News outlet The Kyiv Independent obtained the full text of the agreement through a&nbsp;source within the Ukrainian government.

Here's the key excerpts of the deal:
Ukraine and the United States formalised the deal on 25 February. However, reports suggest that Washington had initially put forward three proposals, two of which Kyiv rejected due to the absence of security provisions.
Speaking to journalists on 26 February, Zelensky stated that the agreement was "well appreciated by our government officials." However, he acknowledged that it does not yet include specific security guarantees for Ukraine.
"The important thing is that the agreement mentions 'partners,' and this fund is Ukrainian-American, not American," he said.

This initial agreement is expected to be followed by a Fund Agreement, which will further outline the workings of the Reconstruction Investment Fund established by both countries. For this to take effect, Ukraine&rsquo;s parliament will need to ratify it.
The document, titled "Bilateral Agreement Establishing Terms and Conditions for a Reconstruction Investment Fund," stresses the continued support of the US for Ukraine following Russia&rsquo;s full-scale invasion in February 2022.
It underscores the partnership between the two nations in rebuilding Ukraine while ensuring that entities or individuals hostile to Ukraine do not benefit from reconstruction efforts.

Some crucial points of the agreement include:
Creation of the Reconstruction Investment Fund &ndash; This fund will be jointly owned and managed by both governments, with specific ownership terms to be determined in the forthcoming Fund Agreement. Neither party can sell or transfer their share without mutual consent.
Revenue contribution &ndash; Ukraine will contribute 50% of revenues from future monetisation of its natural resource assets, which include minerals, oil, natural gas, and infrastructure like LNG terminals and ports. Existing revenue sources that form part of Ukraine&rsquo;s national budget are excluded.
Reinvestment in Ukraine &ndash; Funds collected will be reinvested annually into Ukraine&rsquo;s security, stability, and prosperity. The terms of these investments will be clarified in the Fund Agreement.
Long-term US Commitment &ndash; The agreement outlines Washington&rsquo;s long-term financial support for Ukraine&rsquo;s development. Contributions may include funds, financial instruments, and other assets vital for reconstruction.
Investment strategy &ndash; The fund will attract investments to enhance Ukraine&rsquo;s natural resource sector, infrastructure, and state-owned enterprises, ensuring sustainable economic growth.
Security measures &ndash; Provisions will be included to prevent any attempts to bypass sanctions or restrictive measures.
Legal and structural considerations &ndash; The agreement will align with Ukraine&rsquo;s commitments to the European Union, international financial institutions, and official creditors.

'Stake in Ukraine's minerals, 50% revenue': What does Ukraine-US mineral deal entail?

US President <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/donald-trump" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Donald Trump</a> was initially unwilling to host Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky in Washington, but later changed his stance after French President Emmanuel Macron intervened, according to French media outlet BFMTV.
Citing a diplomatic source, BFMTV reported that Trump&rsquo;s team informed Ukraine on Wednesday that the scheduled meeting was being cancelled. This led to Zelensky reaching out to Macron for help.

<h2>'Don't come, all meetings have been cancelled'</h2>
"Zelensky was supposed to come to Washington yesterday, but someone from the Trump administration told him, 'Listen, there's no point in chartering a plane, don't come, all meetings have been cancelled, President Trump won't receive you.' This caused panic in Kiev," BFMTV reporter Patrick Sauce was quoted as saying by TASS.
In response, Zelensky reportedly called Macron multiple times, urging him to convince Trump to reconsider, as he had hoped to finalise an agreement on Ukrainian minerals during his visit. He also added that the meeting "would have had strong symbolic significance."

A French diplomatic source told BFMTV that Macron then contacted the White House and personally vouched for Zelensky, ultimately persuading Trump to reinstate the meeting.
Trump on February 26 confirmed that Zelensky would visit Washington on Friday to sign a minerals agreement and discuss other matters.
Trump&rsquo;s stance on Zelensky appeared to shift following his meeting with UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer on Thursday (Feb 27). When asked if he would apologise for previously calling Zelensky a "dictator," Trump responded that he could not recall making such a statement. He also described the Ukrainian president as "very brave."

The meeting with Starmer focused on efforts to end the war between Ukraine and Russia, with Trump saying that peace negotiations were "moving along pretty rapidly."
These discussions come in the wake of the Trump administration&rsquo;s surprise decision to engage in high-level talks with Moscow for the first time since Russia&rsquo;s invasion of Ukraine more than three years ago.
Trump had earlier appeared to place blame on Zelensky for the conflict, criticising him for not initiating peace talks sooner.
"You've been there for three years. You should have ended it... You should have never started it. You could have made a deal," Trump had said last Tuesday.

'Did I say that? I can't believe...': Trump disowns remark calling Zelensky a 'dictator'

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has arrived at the White House for his meeting with US President Donald Trump.
Unlike French President Emmanuel Macron, who was received by a protocol officer on Monday, Starmer was personally greeted by Trump outside the West Wing.
As the British leader stepped out of his vehicle, a journalist called out, "Can you get a peace deal done on Ukraine?" Trump replied confidently, "We can, we will."
Inside the Oval Office, Trump described Starmer&rsquo;s visit as a &ldquo;great honour.&rdquo; He said: &ldquo;It&rsquo;s a great honor to have Prime Minister Starmer in the Oval Office. It&rsquo;s a very special place, and he&rsquo;s a special man.&rdquo;
He went on to praise the UK, saying, &ldquo;The United Kingdom is a wonderful country that I know very well. I&rsquo;m there a lot, and I&rsquo;ll be going, and we expect to see each other in the near future. We&rsquo;ll be announcing it.&rdquo;
The two leaders are set to discuss a range of issues, including Russia, Ukraine, and trade. &ldquo;We&rsquo;re going to be discussing many things today. We&rsquo;ll be discussing Russia, Ukraine, we&rsquo;ll be discussing trade and lots of other items, and I think we can say that we&rsquo;re going to be getting along on every one of them," Trump stated.
During their meeting, Starmer formally invited Trump to make a state visit to the UK, handing him what he described as a "really special" invitation from King Charles. Trump accepted, saying he would visit Britain in the "near future."
When questioned about his stance on EU trade and whether Starmer could persuade him not to impose tariffs, Trump was critical of the European Union. He pointed out past disputes, saying, &ldquo;The EU has sued American companies," citing Apple as an example.
Trump also suggested he could support Starmer&rsquo;s Chagos Islands deal. &ldquo;We&rsquo;re going to have some discussions about that very soon, and I have a feeling it&rsquo;s going to work out very well. I think we&rsquo;ll be inclined to go along with your country,&rdquo; he said.
Turning to Ukraine, Trump revealed plans for a new agreement with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, describing it as a security "backstop."
He said, "President Zelensky is coming to see me on Friday morning. And we&rsquo;re going to be signing really a very important agreement for both sides because it&rsquo;s really going to get us into that country, working there."
Explaining the term, he added, "It&rsquo;s a backstop, you could say," referencing how some European leaders have used the word to describe the security guarantees they seek from the US.
On Russia, Trump voiced confidence that Vladimir Putin would not invade Ukraine again if a peace deal were reached. "He does not think Putin would invade again if there is a peace deal. He thinks Putin will keep his word. A deal with Russia would hold. Putting security into Ukraine is the easy part, the deal is the hard part," he said.

Keir Starmer’s White House visit: Trump greets UK PM, says ‘We can, we will’ on Ukraine peace

A new Pentagon memo says that openly transgender individuals will no longer be permitted to serve in the US military and will soon be discharged from duty. This decision signals a major reversal from previous policies that prohibited discrimination based on gender identity.
The memo was revealed on Wednesday as part of an ongoing lawsuit by LGBTQ+ rights organisations challenging an executive order issued by President <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/donald-trump" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Donald Trump</a> last month.

<h2>Mandatory removal process outlined</h2>
According to the memo, the Department of Defense must implement a process to identify transgender service members within 30 days. A further 30 days after that, the discharge process must begin.
"It is the policy of the United States Government to establish high standards for service member readiness, lethality, cohesion, honesty, humility, uniformity, and integrity," the document, dated 26 February, read.
It continued, "This policy is inconsistent with the medical, surgical, and mental health constraints on individuals with gender dysphoria or who have a current diagnosis or history of, or exhibit symptoms consistent with, gender dysphoria."

An earlier memo from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had already said that individuals with a history of gender dysphoria would be barred from enlisting, while also insisting they would be "treated with dignity and respect." A new Pentagon memo says that openly transgender individuals will no longer be permitted to serve in the US military and will soon be discharged from duty. This decision signals a major reversal from previous policies that prohibited discrimination based on gender identity. President <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/donald-trump" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Donald Trump</a> on Thursday (Feb 27) confirmed that 25 per cent tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico will take effect next week, and&nbsp;also announced an additional 10 per cent tax on goods from China.
In a Truth Social post on Thursday, Trump justified the tariffs by citing ongoing drug trafficking issues, claiming that substances from the United States&rsquo; North American neighbours are still entering the country at dangerous levels.

"Drugs are still pouring into our Country from Mexico and Canada at very high and unacceptable levels. A large percentage of these Drugs, much of them in the form of Fentanyl, are made in, and supplied by China. More than 100,000 people died last year due to the distribution of these dangerous and highly addictive POISONS. Millions of people have died over the last two decades. The families of the victims are devastated and, in many instances, virtually destroyed," he said.
The president insisted that the situation could not continue unchecked. &ldquo;We cannot allow this scourge to continue to harm the USA, and therefore, until it stops, or is seriously limited, the proposed TARIFFS scheduled to go into effect on MARCH FOURTH will, indeed, go into effect, as scheduled,&rdquo; he wrote.
Trump also confirmed that China would face an extra 10&nbsp;per cent tariff on the same date, adding that, &ldquo;The April Second Reciprocal Tariff date will remain in full force and effect. Thank you for your attention to this matter. GOD BLESS AMERICA!&rdquo;

The move is expected to escalate trade tensions with key partners. Both Canada and Mexico had previously warned they would introduce retaliatory measures if the tariffs were imposed. The decision could also have economic consequences, potentially leading to higher consumer prices and slower growth, which may trigger political backlash.

However, Trump, who has long advocated for strong tariffs, remains committed to his trade agenda. As part of his broader plan, he intends to reset tariffs on April 2 to match the rates that he believes other countries impose on American goods.
On Wednesday, Trump also said that European nations would be subjected to a 25&nbsp;per cent tariff.

‘Drugs are still pouring in’: Trump confirms 25 per cent tariffs on Canada, Mexico; doubles duty on China

US President Donald Trump on Friday (Feb 21) fired Air Force General CQ Brown Jr. from his role as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff on Friday. Brown, who became the second Black officer to hold the position, had been appointed for a four-year term set to run until September 2027.
&ldquo;I want to thank General Charles &lsquo;CQ&rsquo; Brown for his over 40 years of service to our country, including as our current Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He is a fine gentleman and an outstanding leader, and I wish a great future for him and his family,&rdquo; Trump wrote on Truth Social.

<h2>Ties to DEI policies </h2>
Brown&rsquo;s removal comes months after Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth called for purging the military of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. In a podcast interview last November, Hegseth had specifically suggested firing the Joint Chiefs chairman as part of this effort.
&ldquo;First of all, you&rsquo;ve got to fire the chairman of the Joint Chiefs. Any general that was involved, general, admiral, or whatever, that was involved in any of that DEI woke s**t has got to go,&rdquo; Hegseth said at the time.

Hegseth announced that Trump was seeking new nominations for the Chief of Naval Operations and the Air Force Vice Chief of Staff, meaning Adm. Lisa Franchetti and Gen. James Slife would be removed.
Additionally, Trump was looking&nbsp;to replace the Judge Advocates General for the Army, Navy, and Air Force.
"Finally, I have also directed Secretary Hegseth to solicit nominations for five additional high level positions, which will be announced soon," Trump said.

<h2>Backlash from Democrats</h2>
Democratic lawmakers condemned Brown&rsquo;s firing, arguing that Trump was politicising the military. Senator Jack Reed, a Rhode Island Democrat and top member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, warned that removing officers based on politics or diversity policies undermines military trust and effectiveness.
&ldquo;Firing uniformed leaders as a type of political loyalty test, or for reasons relating to diversity and gender that have nothing to do with performance, erodes the trust and professionalism that our servicemembers require to achieve their missions,&rdquo; Reed said.
Representative Seth Moulton, a Massachusetts Democrat and former Marine officer, said, &ldquo;The firings are un-American, unpatriotic, and dangerous for our troops and our national security. This is the definition of politicising our military."

'Un-American, unpatriotic': Backlash as Trump fires Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, who is Black

US President Donald Trump said on Friday (Feb 21) that he does not see Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as a key player in negotiations to end Russia-Ukraine war.
"I don't think he's very important to be in meetings," Trump said in an interview with Fox News.

"He's been there for three years. He makes it very hard to make deals," he added.
Kyiv and European leaders have voiced frustration after Trump-backed talks between US and Russian officials took place in Saudi Arabia earlier this week without Ukraine&rsquo;s involvement.
"He complains that he's not in a meeting that we're having with Saudi Arabia trying to intermediate peace. He's been in a meeting for three years and nothing got done," Trump said.
<h2>Trump: Russia &lsquo;attacked,&rsquo; but war could have been avoided</h2>
During the interview, Trump admitted that Russia "attacked" Ukraine but insisted that the war could have been prevented.
"Yes, Russia attacked, but there was no reason for him [Vladimir Putin] to attack," Trump said. "You could have talked him out of it. That war should have never happened," he added.

Trump also appeared to shift blame toward Biden and Zelensky. "Every time I say, 'It's not Russia's fault,' but [Joe] Biden said the wrong things, [Volodymyr] Zelensky said the wrong things, and they got attacked, which was a bad thing to do. But Russia could have been talked out of it so easily," he said.
The Fox News host pressed Trump five times on who was ultimately responsible for the war, but Trump kept deflecting.

The interview also touched on Trump&rsquo;s frustration with Zelensky over a failed rare earth mineral deal. "I&rsquo;ve been watching him negotiate with no cards. He has no cards, and you get sick of it," Trump said.
He claimed the US had reached a rare earth minerals agreement with Ukraine, but negotiations fell apart. "We made a deal with rare earth and [the] Secretary of Treasury &mdash; very good guy, actually went there, and they couldn't even come close to getting a deal done," Trump said.
He added that he regretted sending his official to Ukraine. "Frankly, I wish he didn't go there, waste all of his time like that. It was just a wasted trip. A dangerous trip too," Trump said.

‘He's not important’: Trump dismisses Zelensky’s role in Ukraine talks, says war wasn’t ‘Russia’s fault’

The White House said on Friday (Feb 21) that Ukraine will soon sign an agreement granting the United States access to its mineral resources, a deal President Volodymyr Zelensky had previously rejected due to the lack of security guarantees.
&ldquo;Look, here&rsquo;s the bottom line, President Zelensky is going to sign that deal, and you will see that in the very short term, and that is good for Ukraine,&rdquo; Trump&rsquo;s National Security Advisor Michael Waltz told attendees at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) near Washington.

<h2>Ukraine previously rejected US demands</h2>
Zelensky on Wednesday dismissed the US calls to share its rare earth minerals, a deal Trump argued was fair compensation for the aid provided to Ukraine during its war with Russia.
Earlier on Thursday, Waltz had suggested that US access to Ukraine&rsquo;s mineral resources could be exchanged for continued aid or even as repayment for past support.

<h2>Zelensky signals shift in stance</h2>
Despite initially rejecting the proposal, Zelensky later signalled a willingness to negotiate. Following his meeting with US envoy to Ukraine Keith Kellogg in Kyiv, the Ukrainian leader announced he was open to an "investment and security agreement" with the US to help end the war.

<h2>What are rare earth minerals?</h2>
Rare earth minerals refer to a group of 17 metals that are essential for producing magnets used in electric vehicles, smartphones, and other electronics. These elements have no known substitutes, making them highly valuable for global industries.
According to the US Geological Survey, 50 minerals are classified as critical to the American economy and national defence. This list includes rare earth elements, nickel, and lithium.
Ukraine has significant deposits of uranium, lithium, and titanium, though it does not rank among the top five countries in terms of total reserves. The US also possesses its own untapped reserves of these minerals.
<h2>Why is Trump interested in Ukraine&rsquo;s rare earth deposits?</h2>
The US currently has only one operational rare earth mine and limited processing capabilities. Although American companies are working to expand domestic production, China remains the world's dominant supplier of rare earth elements and other key minerals.

Trump&rsquo;s interest in Ukraine&rsquo;s mineral wealth is not new. Zelensky has previously promoted Ukraine&rsquo;s vast resources as a way to strengthen ties with the Trump administration. In recent months, the Ukrainian leader has argued that supporting Ukraine is also in America&rsquo;s economic interest, as access to these minerals could benefit US industries.

US says Zelensky will sign minerals deal 'soon' after rejection: Why does Trump want Ukraine's 'rare earths'?

US President Donald Trump launched a scathing attack on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday, calling him a &ldquo;modestly successful comedian&rdquo; and a &ldquo;dictator without elections.&rdquo;
This comes after Trump previously suggested that Ukraine had started the war and pushed for elections in the country. Speaking after recent US-Russia talks on the Ukraine war, Trump questioned the absence of elections in Ukraine.

"When they want a seat at the table, you could say the people have to&hellip; wouldn&rsquo;t the people of Ukraine have to say, like, &lsquo;You know, it&rsquo;s been a long time since we&rsquo;ve had an election,&rsquo;&rdquo; Trump said.
He further claimed, &ldquo;We have a situation where we haven&rsquo;t had elections in Ukraine, where we have martial law in Ukraine, where the leader in Ukraine&mdash;I mean, I hate to say it, but he&rsquo;s down at four per cent approval rating&mdash;and the country&rsquo;s been blown to smithereens.&rdquo;
Trump&rsquo;s comments prompted Ukraine&rsquo;s European allies to show their support for Zelensky. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer called Zelensky Ukraine&rsquo;s &ldquo;democratically elected leader&rdquo; and defended the decision to postpone elections. &ldquo;It is perfectly reasonable to suspend elections during wartime, as the UK did during World War II,&rdquo; Starmer&rsquo;s office said following his call with Zelensky on February 19.

Let's take a look at the real reason behind why Ukraine hasn't held elections:
<h2>Why hasn&rsquo;t Ukraine held elections?</h2>
Under normal circumstances, Zelensky would have faced re-election in 2024. However, following Russia&rsquo;s full-scale invasion in February 2022, Ukraine imposed martial law, which legally prevents national elections.
Ukraine&rsquo;s parliament recently extended martial law until May 9, 2025. Holding an election before the war ends would require lifting martial law, a move that Zelensky and Ukrainian lawmakers have resisted.
Last November, all political parties in Ukraine&rsquo;s parliament agreed to defer elections until the war is over. Zelensky himself has promised to hold elections once the conflict ends but insists that doing so now would be impossible.

"If we suspend martial law, we will lose the army, and voting without the military is dishonest," he said earlier this month.
In addition to security concerns, millions of Ukrainians remain displaced, either as refugees abroad or within Ukraine. Up to six million more are living in Russian-occupied territories, making an election logistically difficult.
Another issue is the destruction of electoral infrastructure. Many schools and public buildings that would typically serve as polling stations have been damaged or destroyed by Russian attacks.
Even if a ceasefire were to be reached, elections would still take time. According to election watchdog Opora, there is a broad consensus that voting should not take place until at least six months after martial law is lifted.
<h2>When was Ukraine&rsquo;s last election?</h2>
Zelensky was elected in 2019 in a landslide victory against then-incumbent Petro Poroshenko. Running as the candidate for the Servant of the People party, he won by the largest second-round margin in Ukraine&rsquo;s history.
<h2>Who else questions Zelensky&rsquo;s legitimacy?</h2>
Trump is not the only one raising questions about Zelensky&rsquo;s legitimacy. Russian President Vladimir Putin has also attempted to cast doubt on his authority, particularly after his term officially expired last year.
During the US-Russia talks in Saudi Arabia, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said that Putin was open to negotiations with Zelensky but added that &ldquo;legal aspects related to his legitimacy&rdquo; must be considered.
<h2>Would Zelensky win an election now?</h2>
If Ukraine were to hold an election today, current polling suggests that Zelensky would still be the frontrunner. A recent survey found that 57 per cent of Ukrainians trust him, an increase from 52 per cent in December. Another poll conducted from late November to early January showed that 63 per cent of Ukrainians either fully approved or somewhat approved of his leadership.&nbsp;

Is Ukraine's Zelensky really a 'dictator without elections'? Trump’s claim vs. the reality of wartime voting

Indian Foreign Ministry on Friday (Feb 21) said that the Trump administration's claim that $21 million USAID funding was allegedly allocated for 'voter turnout in India' was 'deeply concerning'.
"We have seen information that has been put out by the US administration regarding certain USA activities and funding. These are obviously very deeply troubling. This has led to concerns about foreign interference in India's internal affairs. Relevant departments and agencies are looking into this matter," MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said
"It would be premature to make a public comment at this stage, so relevant authorities are looking into it, and hopefully we can come up with an update on that subsequently," he added.

US Vice President JD Vance spoke at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) on Thursday (Feb 20), marking one month since the Trump administration returned to office.
&ldquo;The president keeps us on a pretty breakneck pace,&rdquo; Vance told the audience.
&ldquo;Trump knows that the American people have given us a chance to save the country, and that&rsquo;s exactly what we&rsquo;re going to do. And thank God for that, because the past month has been a lot of fun,&rdquo; he added.

Vance also spoke about the recent US-Russia talks in Saudi Arabia, crediting Trump for helping move towards ending the war in Ukraine.

Donald Trump has signed an executive order aimed at stopping federal benefits for people living in the US illegally. The move is part of a broader effort to tighten immigration policies.
The White House said that the order seeks to eliminate &ldquo;all taxpayer-funded benefits for illegal aliens.&rdquo; However, it remains unclear which specific benefits will be affected.
"The Order directs Federal departments and agencies to identify all federally funded programs currently providing financial benefits to illegal aliens and take corrective action," the White House fact sheet on the order said.

Generally, undocumented immigrants do not qualify for federal benefits, apart from emergency medical care. Additionally, under a 1982 Supreme Court ruling, all children, regardless of immigration status, are entitled to free K-12 public education.
&ldquo;Over the last 4 years, in particular, the prior administration repeatedly undercut the goals of that law, resulting in the improper expenditure of significant taxpayer resources,&rdquo; the order states referring to a 1996 welfare law that restricted most public benefits for undocumented immigrants.

Praising both chambers, Trump said <a href="https://www.wionews.com/trending/elon-musk-reveals-this-pushed-him-to-endorse-republican-donald-trump-during-2024-us-elections-8735334">Republicans</a> were doing a "SPECTACULAR job of working together as one unified, and unbeatable, TEAM." However, he argued that while the Senate&rsquo;s plan only addresses part of his agenda, the House version covers everything.

"However, unlike the Lindsey Graham version of the very important Legislation currently being discussed, the House Resolution implements my FULL America First Agenda, EVERYTHING, not just parts of it! We need both Chambers to pass the House Budget to 'kickstart' the Reconciliation process, and move all of our priorities to the concept of 'ONE BIG BEAUTIFUL BILL.' It will, without question, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!" he added.
<h2>House Republicans vs. Senate Republicans</h2>
Senate Republicans, led by Senate Budget Committee Chair Lindsey Graham, have been pursuing a two-bill approach. Their plan would first focus on increasing funding for border security, energy, and defence while leaving the extension of Trump&rsquo;s 2017 tax cuts for a later date.
Trump&rsquo;s statement came a day after Senate Majority Leader John Thune announced that the Senate would move forward with its budget framework this week.
House Republicans, however, argue that splitting the legislation into two parts increases the risk of failure, given the GOP&rsquo;s slim majority in the chamber.

The House budget plan would combine all these elements into a single, comprehensive bill. Speaker Johnson is expected to bring the bill to the floor next week but is still working to secure enough votes.
Johnson welcomed Trump&rsquo;s endorsement, posting on X that Trump "is right!"
"House Republicans are working to deliver President Trump&rsquo;s FULL agenda - not just a small part of it. Let&rsquo;s get it done," Johnson wrote.

US President Donald Trump has thrown his full support behind the House Republicans’ budget reconciliation plan, endorsing it on Wednesday just a day after the Senate pushed forward with its own $300 billion package. Trump’s backing supports House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), who has warned that the House may ignore the Senate’s proposal as it works to pass its own version. .@realDonaldTrump is right! House Republicans are working to deliver President Trump’s FULL agenda - not just a small part of it. Let’s get it done, @HouseGOP! pic.twitter.com/Hw32oLAl0z — Speaker Mike Johnson (@SpeakerJohnson) February 19, 2025 'We need both Chambers to pass the House Budget' Praising both chambers, Trump said Republicans were doing a "SPECTACULAR job of working together as one unified, and unbeatable, TEAM." However, he argued that while the Senate’s plan only addresses part of his agenda, the House version covers everything. Also read: Did Biden leave NASA astronauts in space for 'political reasons'? It will, without question, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!" he added. House Republicans vs. Senate Republicans Senate Republicans, led by Senate Budget Committee Chair Lindsey Graham, have been pursuing a two-bill approach. Their plan would first focus on increasing funding for border security, energy, and defence while leaving the extension of Trump’s 2017 tax cuts for a later date. Trump’s statement came a day after Senate Majority Leader John Thune announced that the Senate would move forward with its budget framework this week. House Republicans, however, argue that splitting the legislation into two parts increases the risk of failure, given the GOP’s slim majority in the chamber. ‘They dress in T-shirts’: Trump mocks ‘genius’ DOGE staffers who dress ‘worse than Elon Musk’

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has criticised US President Donald Trump for spreading misinformation, saying he &ldquo;lives in a disinformation bubble.&rdquo; His comments&nbsp;came in response to Trump&rsquo;s claim that Zelensky&rsquo;s approval rating is just 4%.
&ldquo;Unfortunately, President Trump, who we respect as the leader of the American people, exists in a space filled with disinformation,&rdquo; Zelensky told reporters in Kyiv, blaming Moscow for misleading him.

Trump, calling for elections in Ukraine despite martial law, said on Tuesday, &ldquo;He&rsquo;s down at four per cent approval rating.&rdquo;
Zelensky dismissed this, saying the figure &ldquo;comes from Russia.&rdquo; He also added that he does not usually comment on popularity ratings but noted that recent polling shows 58% of Ukrainians trust him.
&ldquo;If someone wants to replace me right now, that will not work,&rdquo; he said.
He also warned about widespread Russian disinformation, which he believes is being shared with the US. To counter such narratives, he said he would investigate collecting more data on global leaders&rsquo; trust ratings. According to him, &ldquo;the misinformation circle around President Trump&rdquo; includes figures linked to the Hungarian and Slovak governments.

<h2>Criticism of US-Russia talks</h2>
Zelensky also took issue with recent discussions between the US and Russia, saying Washington had helped President Vladimir Putin &ldquo;come out of isolation.&rdquo;
&ldquo;This isn&rsquo;t positive for Ukraine. What it does is put the focus back on Russia, and they are happy about that,&rdquo; he said.
He also pushed back against Trump&rsquo;s claims that most of Ukraine&rsquo;s support comes from the US.
&ldquo;The truth is somewhere else,&rdquo; he said, while still expressing gratitude for American aid.

Zelensky further dismissed Trump&rsquo;s assertion that the US had given Ukraine $500 billion and rejected the idea of Ukraine repaying through rare mineral deals.
&ldquo;That is not a serious conversation,&rdquo; he said, but added that he is open to discussing a formal agreement if it includes &ldquo;security guarantees.&rdquo;
&ldquo;OK, let&rsquo;s do a deal. Let&rsquo;s share [resources], depending on the investment &hellip; but we need security guarantees,&rdquo; he said.
<h2>Calls for clearer US support</h2>
Zelensky criticised US representatives in Riyadh for referring to Russia&rsquo;s invasion of Ukraine as a &ldquo;conflict&rdquo; rather than an outright war. &ldquo;This softens it,&rdquo; he said, adding that he had similar discussions with the previous US administration, where he had to push back against efforts to downplay the war.
&ldquo;There was an attempted shift in policy to soften the language describing what Putin is doing against us. We are standing up for Ukraine&rsquo;s rights here. There&rsquo;s nothing terrible about that, but we must recognise what is happening,&rdquo; he said.

<h2>Strengthening European support</h2>
Zelensky said he had delivered &ldquo;a strong message&rdquo; to European leaders in recent meetings and that further discussions, including in the UK, were planned in the coming weeks. The focus, he said, was on &ldquo;what Europe is prepared to do to help Ukraine if there is a reduction in US assistance.&rdquo;
<h2>Frustration with NATO</h2>
The Ukrainian leader also expressed frustration over NATO&rsquo;s reluctance to provide security guarantees. &ldquo;We want security guarantees this year. We want to end the war this year,&rdquo; he said, arguing that NATO should be the guarantor of any peace deal.
&ldquo;I understand that every time I mention NATO, some don&rsquo;t even want to hear the word, but this is where we are,&rdquo; he added.

‘Unfortunate’: Zelensky slams Trump for living in ‘disinformation bubble’ after false claim on approval rating

In the first major Supreme Court case involving an order by US President Donald Trump, his legal team has urged the justices to allow him to dismiss Hampton Dellinger, the head of the Office of Special Counsel.
The administration filed an emergency application on Sunday (Feb 16), requesting the court to overturn a lower court&rsquo;s ruling that temporarily reinstated Dellinger.

The Office of Special Counsel is an independent agency responsible for protecting government whistleblowers and enforcing certain ethics laws. The role is separate from the special counsel appointed by the Justice Department.
<h2>White House: President&rsquo;s power at stake</h2>
In its filing, the administration argued that lower courts should not interfere with the president&rsquo;s authority to remove agency heads. &ldquo;This court should not allow lower courts to seize executive power by dictating to the president how long he must continue employing an agency head against his will,&rdquo; the filing stated. The Supreme Court is expected to decide in the coming days.
This case raises a key constitutional question about whether Congress can restrict a president&rsquo;s ability to fire leaders of independent agencies, an issue that could shape Trump&rsquo;s broader efforts to restructure the federal government through mass dismissals.

Dellinger, who was confirmed by the Senate in 2024, was appointed to a five-year term under a statute that says he can only be removed &ldquo;for inefficiency, neglect of duty, or malfeasance in office.&rdquo;
However, he received a one-sentence email on February 7 informing him that he was being terminated immediately, without any said cause.
<h2>Court battle over the dismissal</h2>
Dellinger challenged his firing in court, and Judge Amy Berman Jackson of the Federal District Court in Washington issued a temporary restraining order allowing him to remain in his position for two weeks while she considered a longer-term ruling.
In her order, Judge Jackson wrote that the law creating Dellinger&rsquo;s position intended to ensure the office&rsquo;s independence and protect it from political influence. She noted that the government&rsquo;s only response was to argue that the statute itself was unconstitutional.

The administration&rsquo;s attempt to overturn Judge Jackson&rsquo;s order was then reviewed by a three-judge panel from the US Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit. On Saturday, the panel rejected the government&rsquo;s emergency motion to block the ruling.
The majority opinion, written by Judges Michelle Childs and Florence Pan, both appointed by President Biden, stated that the government&rsquo;s request was premature.
&ldquo;The question here is not whether the president is entitled to prompt review of his important constitutional arguments,&rdquo; the judges wrote.
&ldquo;Of course he is. The issue before us is whether his mere claim of extraordinary harm justifies this court&rsquo;s immediate review, which would essentially remove the legal issues from the district court&rsquo;s ambit before its proceedings have concluded,&rdquo; they added.

UK PM Keir Starmer to meet Trump next week after US keeps Europe out of Ukraine talks

Iran denounced Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's vow to 'finish the job' against the nation on Monday (Feb 17), calling it a breach of the UN Charter.
"Threatening others is both a gross violation of international law and the United Nations Charter," Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said on Monday (Feb 17), insisting that Israel "can't do a thing" against Iran.

Netanyahu made the comments on Sunday while speaking alongside US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who was in Israel on his first official visit since taking office.
&ldquo;Over the last 16 months, Israel has dealt a mighty blow to Iran&rsquo;s terror axis. Under the strong leadership of President Trump&hellip; I have no doubt that we can and will finish the job,&rdquo; Netanyahu said, referring to conflicts with Iran-backed groups such as Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon, and Yemen&rsquo;s Houthi rebels.
<h2>Rubio: &lsquo;There can never be a nuclear Iran&rsquo;</h2>
Rubio echoed Netanyahu&rsquo;s stance, saying that Iran is behind various militant activities in the region.
"It&rsquo;s important to constantly point out that whether we talk about Hamas, Hezbollah, violence in the West Bank, instability in Syria, or the militias in Iraq, they all have one common factor &ndash; Iran. That must be addressed," Rubio said.

The comments come as US President Donald Trump reinstates his "maximum pressure" strategy against Iran, similar to his approach during his first term. This policy led to the US withdrawing from the 2015 nuclear agreement, accusing Iran of secretly working towards nuclear weapons.
Iran has denied these accusations but has reduced its commitments under the deal, increasing uranium enrichment to 60 per cent.
<h2>Saudi Arabia seeks to mediate</h2>

World: Netanyahu made the comments on Sunday while speaking alongside US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who was in Israel on his first official visit since taking office.

Under the strong leadership of President Trump… I have no doubt that we can and will finish the job,” Netanyahu said, referring to conflicts with Iran-backed groups such as Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon, and Yemen’s Houthi rebels. Rubio: ‘There can never be a nuclear Iran’ Rubio echoed Netanyahu’s stance, saying that Iran is behind various militant activities in the region. "It’s important to constantly point out that whether we talk about Hamas, Hezbollah, violence in the West Bank, instability in Syria, or the militias in Iraq, they all have one common factor – Iran. That must be addressed," Rubio said. This policy led to the US withdrawing from the 2015 nuclear agreement, accusing Iran of secretly working towards nuclear weapons. Iran has denied these accusations but has reduced its commitments under the deal, increasing uranium enrichment to 60 per cent. 'Israel can't do a thing': Tehran slams Netanyahu for vowing to 'finish the job' against Iran with Trump's help

US President <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/donald-trump" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Donald Trump</a> has wasted no time in acting on his campaign pledge to enforce a strict crackdown on illegal immigration. However, his efforts have been met with legal resistance, as multiple federal judges have blocked his executive order aimed at ending birthright citizenship.
For nearly 160 years, the 14th Amendment of the US Constitution has granted citizenship to anyone born on American soil.
But as part of his immigration policies, Trump is pushing to deny citizenship to children of migrants who are in the country illegally or on temporary visas.

Defending his stance, Trump took to Truth Social on Sunday (Feb 16), saying, "The 14th Amendment Right of American Citizenship never had anything to do with modern-day 'gate crashers,' illegal immigrants who break the Law by being in our Country. It had everything to do with giving Citizenship to former slaves."
He further added, "Our Founding Fathers are 'spinning in their graves' at the idea that our Country can be taken away from us. No Nation in the World has anything like this. Our lawyers and Judges have to be tough and protect America!"

Trump argues that automatic citizenship is being exploited by undocumented immigrants crossing the southern border and insists that the long-standing interpretation of the 14th Amendment must change. If enforced, his executive order would overturn more than a century of legal precedent guaranteeing citizenship to nearly all individuals born in the US, regardless of their parents' immigration status.
<h2>Legal setbacks for Trump&rsquo;s orders</h2>
The court rulings against Trump&rsquo;s executive order on birthright citizenship are just one of several legal defeats he has faced in recent weeks.
