After assuming office on 20 January, Trump signed an order delaying the enforcement of the ban on TikTok by 75 days. He has since confirmed discussions with various parties about acquiring TikTok and indicated that a decision regarding its future is likely in February.
Speaking to reporters about TikTok, Trump mentioned that Microsoft was among the companies interested in acquiring the platform. &ldquo;I would say yes&hellip; A lot of interest in TikTok. There&rsquo;s great interest in TikTok," he said.
In his first interview as the 47th US President, Trump dismissed concerns that China could be using TikTok to spy on American teenagers. &ldquo;Is it that important for China to be spying on young people? On young kids watching crazy videos?&rdquo; he asked.
He also questioned why there was little scrutiny over other products manufactured in China, including telephones and other devices.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio shared on Monday (Feb 3) that he had been put in charge of the US aid agency, saying he would stop its "insubordination" to President Donald Trump's agenda.
"I'm the acting director of USAID," Rubio told reporters on a visit to El Salvador, saying that the agency had not answered questions and "that level of insubordination makes it impossible to conduct a sort of serious review."
In another development, the headquarters of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in Washington, DC, was reportedly shut, with staff instructed to remain at home. According to Devex, a media platform focused on global development, employees received emails late on Sunday night advising them not to report to work the next day. Devex obtained a copy of the email, which was sent to USAID staff based at the Ronald Reagan Building in Washington, DC.

<h2>Trump agrees to proposal to shut down USAID: Elon Musk</h2>

Trump has implemented a worldwide freeze on most US foreign aid as part of his &ldquo;America First&rdquo; policy, a decision that is already having significant repercussions globally. Democrats and other critics have strongly opposed the targeting of USAID by Musk and the Trump administration.

Before he meets with Trump, Netanyahu is scheduled to hold discussions with US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff on Monday. Witkoff, who played a key role in negotiating the ceasefire alongside Qatari and Egyptian officials, is expected to help shape the next phase of negotiations.
Netanyahu&rsquo;s office has confirmed that his talks with Witkoff in Washington will serve as the formal launch of further negotiations. The US envoy is also expected to engage with Qatari and Egyptian officials this week. Following these discussions, he and Netanyahu will likely coordinate on sending delegations to advance talks on the next phase of the ceasefire.
Trump has repeatedly expressed his desire to see an end to conflicts in the Middle East. Speaking on Sunday, he said that ceasefire discussions were "progressing" and mentioned "big meetings" planned with Netanyahu.

A second Hamas official stated that they were "waiting for the mediators to initiate the next round."
The ceasefire agreement, which began on 19 January, outlines a two-phase process. The first phase involves the release of 33 Israeli hostages in exchange for approximately 1,900 Palestinian prisoners from Israeli detention. So far, 13 Israeli and five Thai hostages have been released in exchange for 583 Palestinian prisoners.
The upcoming second phase is expected to address the release of remaining hostages and could include discussions aimed at securing a more permanent resolution to the conflict.

"Canada doesn&rsquo;t even allow US Banks to open or do business there. What&rsquo;s that all about? Many such things, but it&rsquo;s also a DRUG WAR, and hundreds of thousands of people have died in the US from drugs pouring through the Borders of Mexico and Canada. Just spoke to Justin Trudeau. Will be speaking to him again at 3:00 PM," Trump wrote on Truth Social. He reiterated that the tariffs were part of an effort to curb drug trafficking, particularly fentanyl.

Trump speaks to Trudeau as US tariffs ignite trade war; Ontario scraps agreement with Musk’s Starlink

After imposing sweeping tariffs on China, Canada, and Mexico, Donald Trump is all set to write another chapter of his tariff story, this time with the European Union as the target. The US President has once again threatened to extend trade tariffs, reiterating that the European Union, and possibly the UK, will be subjected to new tariffs.
<h2>Trump confirms tariffs on the EU</h2>
Speaking on Sunday night, Trump insisted that tariffs on the EU would "definitely happen," repeating his concern over the significant US trade deficit with the bloc and his push for Europe to increase imports of American cars and agricultural products. "It will definitely happen with the European Union, I can tell you that. I wouldn&rsquo;t say there&rsquo;s a timeline but it&rsquo;s going to be pretty soon," he told reporters.

Trump appeared more lenient towards the UK, citing a positive relationship with Prime Minister Keir Starmer, though he did not rule out potential tariffs.
"The UK is out of line but I&rsquo;m sure that one, I think that one can be worked out. Well, Prime Minister Starmer&rsquo;s been very nice, we&rsquo;ve had a couple of meetings, we&rsquo;ve had numerous phone calls, we&rsquo;re getting along very well. We&rsquo;ll see whether or not we can balance out our budget," he said.
<h2>EU vows strong response</h2>
Ahead of Trump&rsquo;s latest comments, a spokesperson for the European Commission stated on Sunday that the EU would "respond firmly to any trading partner that unfairly or arbitrarily imposes tariffs on EU goods."
<a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/jaishankar-rebukes-rahul-gandhi-over-trump-inauguration-invite-allegation-common-knowledge-pm-does-not-attend-such-events-8686736" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Also read: Jaishankar rebukes Rahul Gandhi over Trump inauguration invite allegation; 'common knowledge PM doesn't attend such events'</a>
The commission also reacted to Trump&rsquo;s decision to impose tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China, stating: "Tariffs create unnecessary economic disruption and drive inflation. They are hurtful to all sides."
<h2>How China, Canada and Mexico responded to tariffs</h2>
The announcement comes as Trump&rsquo;s tariffs on Mexico, Canada, and China, revealed on Saturday, prompted swift retaliation from all three nations. Both Mexico and Canada have pledged retaliation, while China and Canada are also pursuing legal action.
Trump acknowledged that his sweeping tariffs on these countries might cause "short-term" economic difficulties for Americans, as global markets reacted with concern over potential economic slowdown and rising inflation.
"We may have short-term some little pain, and people understand that. But long term, the United States has been ripped off by virtually every country in the world," he said.
<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/trump-to-cut-south-africa-funds-over-treating-certain-classes-of-people-very-badly-8685273" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Also read: Trump to cut South Africa funds over treating 'certain classes of people very badly'</a>
<h2>Canada&rsquo;s retaliatory measures</h2>
In response to Trump's tariffs, Canada&rsquo;s finance department released a list of US imports that will be subjected to a 25% retaliatory tariff from Tuesday. The initial round targets goods worth CAD 30 billion (approximately USD 20 billion), including tobacco, produce, household appliances, firearms, and military equipment.
Canada is also preparing a broader set of tariffs in 21 days, which will impact passenger vehicles, trucks, steel and aluminum products, various fruits and vegetables, beef, pork, and dairy products.
<h2>Mexico&rsquo;s response</h2>
Mexico&rsquo;s president, Claudia Sheinbaum, confirmed that her government would provide further details on its own retaliatory measures on Monday. In a statement on Sunday, Sheinbaum emphasised her preference for negotiation over confrontation.
"Problems are not addressed by imposing tariffs, but with talks and dialogue," she said. "Sovereignty is not negotiable: coordination yes, subordination no."

Sheinbaum and Canada&rsquo;s Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, discussed the issue by phone on Saturday following the US decision to impose tariffs&mdash;25% on goods from Canada and Mexico, with a reduced rate of 10% for Canadian oil, and 10% on imports from China.
<h2>Canada and Mexico strengthen ties</h2>
Trudeau&rsquo;s office later confirmed that Canada and Mexico had agreed "to enhance the strong bilateral relations" between their nations.
"Now is the time to choose products made right here in Canada," Trudeau wrote on X on Sunday. "Check the labels. Let&rsquo;s do our part. Wherever we can, choose Canada."
Despite Trump&rsquo;s warning of potential escalations if retaliatory tariffs were introduced, both Canada and Mexico proceeded with their retaliatory tariffs.
China also announced it would challenge the tariffs through legal means. The US-imposed tariffs "seriously violate" World Trade Organisation rules, according to China&rsquo;s commerce ministry, which urged the US to "engage in frank dialogue and strengthen cooperation."
<h2>Public backlash grows</h2>
Beyond official government responses, people have already begun discussing how to adapt to Trump&rsquo;s decision, with social media users sharing suggestions for alternatives to US products.
Public sentiment was evident in Canada over the weekend, as hockey fans booed the US national anthem on Saturday during two National Hockey League games. The protests continued on Sunday at an NBA game in Toronto, where the Raptors faced the Los Angeles Clippers.

Canada is also preparing a broader set of tariffs in 21 days, which will impact passenger vehicles, trucks, steel and aluminum products, various fruits and vegetables, beef, pork, and dairy products. Mexico’s response Mexico’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum, confirmed that her government would provide further details on its own retaliatory measures on Monday. In a statement on Sunday, Sheinbaum emphasised her preference for negotiation over confrontation. "Problems are not addressed by imposing tariffs, but with talks and dialogue," she said. "Sovereignty is not negotiable: coordination yes, subordination no." Also read: Trump tariffs hit crypto rally: digital tokens tank up to 28% Sheinbaum and Canada’s Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, discussed the issue by phone on Saturday following the US decision to impose tariffs—25% on goods from Canada and Mexico, with a reduced rate of 10% for Canadian oil, and 10% on imports from China. Canada and Mexico strengthen ties Trudeau’s office later confirmed that Canada and Mexico had agreed "to enhance the strong bilateral relations" between their nations. "Now is the time to choose products made right here in Canada," Trudeau wrote on X on Sunday. "Check the labels. Let’s do our part. Wherever we can, choose Canada." Despite Trump’s warning of potential escalations if retaliatory tariffs were introduced, both Canada and Mexico proceeded with their retaliatory tariffs. China also announced it would challenge the tariffs through legal means. The US-imposed tariffs "seriously violate" World Trade Organisation rules, according to China’s commerce ministry, which urged the US to "engage in frank dialogue and strengthen cooperation." Public backlash grows Beyond official government responses, people have already begun discussing how to adapt to Trump’s decision, with social media users sharing suggestions for alternatives to US products. Public sentiment was evident in Canada over the weekend, as hockey fans booed the US national anthem on Saturday during two National Hockey League games. The protests continued on Sunday at an NBA game in Toronto, where the Raptors faced the Los Angeles Clippers. (With inputs from agencies)

Inside how Canada, Mexico, and China are firing back at Trump’s tariffs as he sets his sights on the EU

President Donald Trump&rsquo;s recent threats to impose steep tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China from Saturday (Feb 01) have left the world awaiting his next move. If enforced, these measures could trigger a global trade war.
Confirming that Trump will move forward with his threats, White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said, "I can confirm that tomorrow, the February 1st deadline that President Trump put into place at a statement several weeks ago continues."
During a speech from the Oval Office on Thursday (Jan 30), Trump said that he was ready to halt imports from Canada and Mexico, two of the United States&rsquo; closest allies and largest trading partners.

&ldquo;We&rsquo;ll be announcing the tariffs on Canada and Mexico for a number of reasons. I&rsquo;ll be putting the tariff of 25 per cent on Canada, and separately, 25 per cent on Mexico, and we&rsquo;ll really have to do that,&rdquo; he said.
Trump said that tariffs would commence at 25% and &ldquo;may or may not rise with time.&rdquo; However, he suggested that oil imports might be exempt.
Trump also said that he'll impose 10% tariffs on China. Beyond targeting Canada, Mexico, and China, he has threatened 100% tariffs on BRICS nations if they attempt to replace the US dollar as the world&rsquo;s dominant reserve currency.
<h2>Canada, Mexico engage in last-minute discussions with Rubio to dissuade Trump</h2>
In response, officials from Canada and Mexico have been making critical efforts to prevent Trump from implementing these tariffs. According to The New York Times, they have been engaged in last-minute discussions with Secretary of State Marco Rubio, stressing their border enforcement efforts.

Goldman Sachs economists, in a note cited by The New York Times on Friday, said that they expected a gradual implementation of tariffs.
&ldquo;We still do not see a sustained 25 per cent tariff on both countries as the base case. Instead, we think it is more likely that Trump will announce a tariff with delayed implementation, targeted at certain imports, starting at a lower rate that rises over time, or some combination of these,&rdquo; they wrote, as cited by The New York Times.

Most economists argue that Trump&rsquo;s tariffs will worsen inflation, slow economic growth, harm US workers, and ultimately place the financial burden on American consumers.

Trump’s tariffs to hit Canada, Mexico and China: Why should Americans be worried?

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi told his US counterpart Donald Trump on Saturday that the world was relying on him "to reach a permanent and historic peace agreement" to end the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians.
Saturday's phone call was the first between the two leaders since Trump repeatedly floated a plan to relocate Palestinians from Gaza into Jordan and Egypt, which Sisi and other Arab leaders have strongly rejected.
<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/pentagon-removes-these-major-news-outlets-from-the-workspace-in-rotation-program-8682514" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Also read: Pentagon removes these major news outlets from the workspace in 'rotation program'</a>
A statement from Sisi's office said he and Trump had extended mutual invitations for state visits during the call and stressed the importance of continued "coordination and cooperation".
Sisi also noted that "the international community is counting on President Trump's ability to reach a permanent and historic peace agreement that ends the conflict that has existed in the region for decades", the statement said.
Trump last month suggested a plan to "clean out" the Gaza Strip, saying last Saturday he would "like Egypt to take people", as well as Jordan.
At the time, he said he would speak to Sisi the following day, but Egypt later denied the call had taken place.
Both Egypt and Jordan have rejected the plan.

On Wednesday, Sisi called the proposal "an injustice that we cannot take part in", and said he was "determined to work with President Trump, who seeks to achieve the desired peace based on the two-state solution".
Trump, however, insisted again on Thursday that Egypt and Jordan "will do it", adding: "We do a lot for them."
Egypt is a key US ally in the region, and was the only country besides Israel to receive an exemption from Trump's foreign aid freeze last month.
Since the start of the Israel-Hamas war, Egypt has played a delicate balancing act -- maintaining its mediator role in the conflict while positioning itself as a champion of the Palestinian cause.
"If I were to ask this of the Egyptian people, all of them would take to the streets to say 'no'," Sisi said on Wednesday of the proposed plan.
At a meeting in Cairo on Saturday, top diplomats from Egypt, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Qatar also rejected any forcible displacement of Palestinians, according to a joint statement.
On Friday, state-linked media in Egypt broadcast footage of people protesting near Egypt's border with Gaza against Palestinian displacement.
The read-out from Sisi's office on Saturday did not mention the proposal, but said the call "witnessed a positive dialogue" between the presidents on the implementation of the ceasefire agreement between Hamas and Israel, brokered by Egypt, the US and Qatar.

Egypt rejects Trump’s Gaza relocation plan, tells US Prez 'world counting on' him for Middle East peace

The United States military on Saturday conducted air strikes on Islamic State group targets in Somalia, President Donald Trump announced on Saturday (Feb 01).
"This morning I ordered precision Military air strikes on the Senior ISIS Attack Planner and other terrorists he recruited and led in Somalia," Trump said on Truth Social.

"These killers, who we found hiding in caves, threatened the United States and our Allies. The strikes destroyed the caves they live in, and killed many terrorists without, in any way, harming civilians," he added.
"Our Military has targeted this ISIS Attack Planner for years, but Biden and his cronies wouldn&rsquo;t act quickly enough to get the job done. I did! The message to ISIS and all others who would attack Americans is that &ldquo;WE WILL FIND YOU, AND WE WILL KILL YOU!,&rdquo; the US President warned.
Trump, however, did not share the identity of the ISIS planner, nor did he confirm whether that person was killed in the strike.&nbsp;

Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth said on Saturday that the strikes by US Africa Command were directed by President Trump and coordinated with Somalia's government.
"Our initial assessment is that multiple operatives were killed in the airstrikes and no civilians were harmed," Hegseth added.
"This action further degrades ISIS's ability to plot and conduct terrorist attacks threatening U.S. citizens, our partners, and innocent civilians and sends a clear signal that the United States always stands ready to find and eliminate terrorists who threaten the United States and our allies, even as we conduct robust border-protection and many other operations under President Trump's leadership," the statement from the defense secretary said.
The Pentagon's counterterrorism strategy in Africa has been strained as two key partners, Chad and Niger, ousted U.S. forces last year and took over key bases that the U.S. military had used to train and conduct missions against terrorist groups across the Sahel, the vast arid expanse south of the Sahara Desert.
As per the International Crisis Group, the number of ISIS militants in Somalia is likely to be in the hundreds, with most of them scattered in the Cal Miskaat mountains in Puntland's Bari region.

'WILL FIND AND KILL YOU': Trump's stern warning as US conducts air strikes on IS targets in Somalia

Aides to Elon Musk, who have been put in charge of the US government's human resources agency, have reportedly blocked career civil servants from accessing computer systems containing the personal details of millions of federal employees, according to sources cited by Reuters.

Musk, tasked by Trump with cutting down the civilian government workforce, which consists of 2.2 million employees, has wasted no time in appointing allies to key positions within the Office of Personnel Management (OPM).
Two officials, who spoke to Reuters anonymously due to fear of retaliation, revealed that some senior career employees at OPM have had their access revoked to certain data systems. These include the Enterprise Human Resources Integration database, which holds sensitive information such as dates of birth, Social Security numbers, home addresses, pay grades, appraisals, and length of service of government workers.

While affected officials can still access functions such as email, they are now unable to view the extensive datasets covering all aspects of the federal workforce.

Donald Trump&rsquo;s nominee for FBI Director, Kashyap Pramod Patel, a former chief of staff at the Department of Defense, appeared before the Senate for his confirmation hearing on Thursday (Jan 30).
Chuck Grassley, Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, opened the hearing, saying that public trust in the FBI had reached its &ldquo;lowest rating in a century.&rdquo; He attributed this decline to &ldquo;abuse, lack of transparency and weaponisation of law enforcement.&rdquo;

Addressing Patel directly, Grassley stressed that his role would be to &ldquo;restore&rdquo; public confidence, highlighting Patel&rsquo;s &ldquo;extensive background&rdquo; as an asset.
During the hearing, Grassley questioned Patel about QAnon, a widely discredited conspiracy theory alleging that Trump was secretly battling elite Satan-worshipping paedophiles in government, business, and the media. Grassley directly asked Patel whether he was a &ldquo;follower or promoter&rdquo; of the theory, to which Patel firmly responded, &ldquo;No.&rdquo;
<h2>'Kash Patel doesn't meet the standard': Richard Durbin</h2>
Richard Durbin, the leading Democrat on the committee, voiced strong opposition to Patel&rsquo;s nomination, arguing that he lacked the &ldquo;experience,&rdquo; &ldquo;temperament,&rdquo; and &ldquo;judgment&rdquo; necessary for the role. &ldquo;After meeting with Patel and reviewing his record, I do not believe you meet the standard,&rdquo; Durbin said. He described Patel as someone who had &ldquo;left behind a trail of grievances&rdquo; and had a history of retaliating against those who disagreed with him.

Durbin also pointed out that Donald Trump had previously dismissed his first FBI director, James Comey, and pressured his second, Christopher Wray, to step down. &ldquo;With Patel, however, obviously, the president has found a loyalist,&rdquo; he added.
<h2>Kash Patel's opening statement at Senate confirmation</h2>
In his opening statement, Patel spoke about his Indian heritage and how it had shaped his worldview. If confirmed, he pledged to uphold the FBI&rsquo;s primary mission: &ldquo;to investigate fully wherever there is a constitutional factual basis to do so.&rdquo;
Patel was also questioned about his stance on whether those involved in the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021, should have been pardoned by Trump. He responded, &ldquo;I have always rejected any violence against law enforcement, including in that group, any violence against law enforcement on January 6.&rdquo;
Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, a Democrat, challenged Patel over past comments, particularly a social media post referencing an &ldquo;enemies list&rdquo; and saying, &ldquo;The manhunt starts tomorrow.&rdquo; The so-called enemies list, featured in the appendix of Patel&rsquo;s book, named individuals he described as part of the &ldquo;deep state,&rdquo; including former president Joe Biden, former Attorney General Merrick Garland, and former National Security Adviser John Bolton.
Patel rejected the characterisation of the list as targeting opponents, saying, &ldquo;It&rsquo;s not an enemies list. It&rsquo;s a total mischaracterisation.&rdquo;

'Trump loyalist or FBI reformer?' US President's FBI pick Kash Patel grilled in heated Senate hearing

Former US Representative <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/tulsi-gabbard" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Tulsi Gabbard</a>, President Donald Trump's nominee for Director of National Intelligence, faced her Senate confirmation hearing on Thursday (Jan 30).
The hearing was opened by Senator Tom Cotton, a Republican from Arkansas and chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee. He said that Gabbard&rsquo;s nomination had attracted &ldquo;a bit more interest and attention than do most nominees before this committee.&rdquo; Despite this, he assured that she would be &ldquo;treated with the exact same respect, consideration and professionalism that we extended to every nominee.&rdquo;

However, Senator Mark Warner, the committee&rsquo;s vice-chairman, expressed reservations about Gabbard&rsquo;s suitability for the role. The Virginia senator said, &ldquo;I continue to have significant concerns about your judgment and your qualifications to meet the standard set by law.&rdquo; He warned that her confirmation could potentially impact intelligence-sharing with allied nations.
Warner accused Gabbard of frequently excusing the actions of adversaries and instead blaming the United States and its allies. He also raised concerns over her previous statements regarding Edward Snowden, the former intelligence contractor who leaked classified information before fleeing to Russia. Warner asked whether she still considered Snowden &ldquo;brave&rdquo; and if she believed he deserved a pardon.

Gabbard did not give a direct response but said that Snowden &ldquo;broke the law&rdquo; while also exposing significant &ldquo;egregious, illegal and unconstitutional&rdquo; activities within the US intelligence community. Warner, who referred to Snowden as a traitor, pressed for a clear yes or no response, but Gabbard refused to provide one.

&ldquo;The fact is, what truly unsettles my political opponents is I refuse to be their puppet. I have no love for Assad or Gaddafi or any dictator. I just hate al-Qaeda. I hate that we have leaders who cosy up to Islamist extremists, minimising them to so-called rebels,&rdquo; she said.

US President <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/donald-trump" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Donald Trump</a> is planning to sign an executive order that would begin the process of creating a "next generation" missile defence system to protect the United States from threats posed by ballistic missiles and other long-range attacks.
"The threat of attack by ballistic, cruise, and hypersonic missiles remains a catastrophic threat facing the United States," states a White House document cited by CNN about the proposed order.

The order outlines plans for creating an advanced defence system, similar to Israel&rsquo;s Iron Dome, which was developed in partnership with the US. Iron Dome is designed to counter a range of threats, including drones, rockets, and cruise missiles.
<h2>Why does the US need an Iron Dome?</h2>
The initiative seeks to speed up the development and deployment of advanced systems capable of detecting, intercepting, and neutralising incoming missiles, with provisions to prevent such attacks before they are launched.
A fact sheet on the executive order describes this next-generation defence shield as a safeguard against "catastrophic threats," though no such weapons have been used against US territory in modern warfare.

Speaking to reporters at the Pentagon on Monday, Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth hinted at additional executive orders in the pipeline. Trump's 'Iron Dome for America': US President to sign executive order for 'next-gen' missile defence upgrade

US President <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/donald-trump" rel="dofollow">Donald Trump</a> is expected to sign multiple executive orders on Monday (Jan 27) to reshape the military.
Among military-related orders, the first one is to remove diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives from the Department of Defense.
Another order would ban transgender service members from serving in the US armed forces, CNN reported. A third will reinstate service members dismissed for refusing COVID-19 vaccinations. In his inauguration speech, Trump called the dismissals "unjust expulsions."

Approximately 8,000 military personnel were discharged over vaccine refusals during the pandemic, but only 43 were reinstated before Trump returned to the White House.
Shortly after he arrived at the Pentagon on Monday, Hegseth told reporters that there were &ldquo;more executive orders coming.&rdquo;

<h2>Removal of DEI initiatives from the US military</h2>
The removal of DEI initiatives was a major campaign promise that Trump began implementing immediately after assuming office last week. DEI programmes aim to encourage participation from individuals of diverse backgrounds in workplaces.
Shortly after taking office, Trump directed all federal employees involved in DEI initiatives to be placed on paid administrative leave. According to the White House, these staff members had to be on leave by 17:00 EST (22:00 GMT) the next day, after which the offices and programmes were closed.

Trump labelled DEI initiatives as "dangerous, demeaning and immoral" in an official order. A White House source confirmed to CBS that the executive orders will ban practices that promote discriminatory race- or sex-based preferences in the military, Department of Defense, or the Department of Homeland Security.
The remaining DEI-related structures within these departments will also be dismantled. Additionally, military service academies, such as West Point and the US Air Force Academy, will undergo a review of their curricula for content perceived as "radical" DEI or gender ideologies.

Trump to shake up US military with executive orders targeting transgender troops, scrapping DEI initiatives

North Korea has carried out its first weapons test since the inauguration of US President Donald Trump on 20 January. The test involved what Pyongyang described as "strategic" cruise missiles, a term often associated with nuclear-capable weaponry. The move comes as North Korea criticised joint military exercises conducted by the United States and South Korea.

According to the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), leader Kim Jong Un oversaw the test, which took place on Saturday (Jan 25). Kim referred to the underwater-to-surface strategic cruise missile system as part of the country's &ldquo;war deterrence means&rdquo; and added that it is being &ldquo;perfected more thoroughly.&rdquo;
<h2>'No negative impact' on the security of neighbouring countries</h2>
The missiles reportedly flew along elliptical and figure-eight flight paths for over two hours, covering a distance of 1,500 kilometres. KCNA noted that the missiles &ldquo;precisely&rdquo; hit their targets and stressed that the test had &ldquo;no negative impact&rdquo; on the security of neighbouring countries.

The KCNA said, &ldquo;The test-fire of the weapon system is part of plans for building the national defence capabilities to raise the effectiveness of strategic control against potential enemies in conformity with the changing regional safety circumstances.&rdquo;
<h2>North Korea condemns US for engaging in 'serious military provocations'</h2>
In addition, North Korea&rsquo;s Foreign Ministry issued a statement on Sunday condemning the US for engaging in what it called &ldquo;serious military provocations&rdquo; through its military exercises with South Korea. These joint drills are viewed by Pyongyang as rehearsals for invasion, though both Washington and Seoul maintain that the exercises are defensive in nature.

&ldquo;The reality stresses that the DPRK should counter the US with the toughest counteraction from A to Z as long as it refuses the sovereignty and security interests of the DPRK, and this is the best option for dealing with the US,&rdquo; the Foreign Ministry statement read. The DPRK, or Democratic People&rsquo;s Republic of Korea, is North Korea&rsquo;s official name.

World: North Korea’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement on Sunday condemning the US for engaging in “military provocations” through its military exercises with South Korea.

Also read: 'When Russians hide, North Koreans shoot': How Pyongyang's troops are reshaping Russia-Ukraine war According to the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), leader Kim Jong Un oversaw the test, which took place on Saturday (Jan 25). Kim referred to the underwater-to-surface strategic cruise missile system as part of the country's “war deterrence means” and added that it is being “perfected more thoroughly.” 'No negative impact' on the security of neighbouring countries The missiles reportedly flew along elliptical and figure-eight flight paths for over two hours, covering a distance of 1,500 kilometres. KCNA noted that the missiles “precisely” hit their targets and stressed that the test had “no negative impact” on the security of neighbouring countries. These joint drills are viewed by Pyongyang as rehearsals for invasion, though both Washington and Seoul maintain that the exercises are defensive in nature. Also read: Trump says UK PM Starmer is doing 'very good job' despite 'first buddy' Elon Musk's criticism “The reality stresses that the DPRK should counter the US with the toughest counteraction from A to Z as long as it refuses the sovereignty and security interests of the DPRK, and this is the best option for dealing with the US,” the Foreign Ministry statement read. The DPRK, or Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, is North Korea’s official name. Can Trump and Kim revive US-North Korea diplomacy? US President <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/donald-trump" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Donald Trump</a> has voiced confidence that the United States will gain control of Greenland, after renewed discussions about acquiring the autonomous Danish territory.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Saturday (Jan 25), Trump said, &ldquo;I think we're going to have it,&rdquo; claiming that the island&rsquo;s 57,000 residents &ldquo;want to be with us.&rdquo; He reiterated, &ldquo;I think the people want to be with us,&rdquo; when asked about Greenland during the press briefing.

Trump questioned Denmark&rsquo;s claim over the island, describing any refusal to transfer control as &ldquo;a very unfriendly act.&rdquo; He added, &ldquo;It has to do with freedom of the world. It has nothing to do with the United States other than that we're the ones that can provide the freedom. They can't.&rdquo;
<h2>Heated phone call between Trump and Danish PM Mette Frederiksen</h2>
His comments follow reports of a heated phone exchange with <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/us-president-donald-trump-phone-call-danish-pm-mette-frederiksen-greenland-8652658">Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen</a>, during which she reportedly insisted that Greenland is not for sale. While recognising Trump's significant interest in the region, Frederiksen maintained that the territory was not up for negotiation.
Trump&rsquo;s interest in Greenland dates back to 2019, during his first term, when he described the island as crucial for global security. According to reports, he recently revived the idea and allegedly threatened Denmark with tariffs if it refused to relinquish Greenland.
Frederiksen reportedly proposed enhanced military and economic cooperation between the US and Greenland, including access to the island&rsquo;s mineral resources. However, Trump is said to have rejected this, insisting on full US control.

Greenland&rsquo;s Prime Minister M&uacute;te Egede responded by emphasising that decisions regarding the island&rsquo;s land use rest solely with Greenland. While open to closer collaboration with the US, particularly in defence and mining, Egede underscored the island&rsquo;s autonomy.
Frederiksen echoed this sentiment earlier this month, stating, &ldquo;Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders,&rdquo; and reaffirmed that only its people can decide the territory&rsquo;s future.
When asked if military or economic measures were off the table in pursuing Greenland, Trump declined to rule them out.

US President <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/donald-trump" rel="dofollow">Donald Trump</a> has praised UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer for his performance, describing it as "very good thus far." He also noted their "very good relationship" during comments given to the BBC on Saturday (Jan 25).
When asked about their interactions, Trump mentioned they were scheduled to hold a phone conversation within 24 hours. The two leaders have previously met several times, including when Sir Keir visited Trump Tower in New York during the US presidential campaign.
"I get along with him well. I like him a lot. He's liberal, which is a bit different from me, but I think he's a very good person and I think he's done a very good job thus far," Trump said of Sir Keir.
"He's represented his country in terms of philosophy. I may not agree with his philosophy, but I have a very good relationship with him," he added.

<h2>Elon Musk's criticism of Sir Keir Starmer</h2>
Despite Trump's positive comments, billionaire Elon Musk, and self-appointed 'first buddy' of the US president, has been sharply critical of Sir Keir Starmer. Musk has frequently called for the UK leader's removal and has used his social media platform X to voice his opposition.
Earlier this month, Musk publicly criticised Sir Keir in connection with the grooming gangs scandal, accusing the prime minister of being "deeply complicit in the mass rapes in exchange for votes." Sir Keir, who served as Director of Public Prosecutions from 2008 to 2013, rejected the accusations, calling them "lies and misinformation" and adding he had addressed prosecutions "head-on."
Musk&rsquo;s disputes with Sir Keir&rsquo;s government are not new. He has previously referred to Britain as a &ldquo;police state&rdquo; due to its handling of the Southport riots, which led to violent street clashes during the summer. Musk has repeatedly criticised Starmer on X while expressing support for Reform UK, a political party.

The US has also reverted the name of the Alaskan peak known as Denali to its previous name, Mount McKinley.
"North America's highest peak will once again bear the name Mount McKinley," the department statement said.
Mount McKinley, named after former US President William McKinley, was renamed Denali in 1975 to honour its Indigenous heritage.
The name "Denali," meaning &ldquo;tall&rdquo; in the Koyukon language, was adopted following a request from the state of Alaska.
&ldquo;These changes reaffirm the Nation&rsquo;s commitment to preserving the extraordinary heritage of the United States and ensuring that future generations celebrate the legacy of its heroes and historical landmarks,&rdquo; the Interior Department explained.
<h2>Will the change apply internationally?</h2>
Despite Trump&rsquo;s directive, international recognition of the Gulf&rsquo;s new name remains uncertain.
The Gulf of Mexico is a longstanding geographical term, widely recognised as a maritime reference for centuries.
Mexico, which also borders the Gulf, has previously expressed its opposition to Trump's suggestion of changing the name.

US President <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/donald-trump" rel="dofollow">Donald Trump</a> on Friday (Jan 24) reinstated the &ldquo;Mexico City Rule,&rdquo; a long-standing Republican policy that bans US global health funding for foreign organisations involved in providing or promoting abortions. Originally introduced during Republican president Ronald Reagan&rsquo;s administration, the Mexico City Rule has been repeatedly revoked by Democratic presidents and reinstated by Republican presidents. Trump had previously restored the policy at the start of his first term, but his predecessor Joe Biden overturned&nbsp;it during his time in office.

A 2022 study by the National Academy of Sciences found that Trump&rsquo;s earlier anti-abortion policies on foreign aid during his first term had led to an estimated 108,000 deaths of women and children in low-income countries.
This was linked to funding cuts for organisations like MSI Reproductive Choices, which provides contraception and STI testing using US&nbsp;funds&nbsp;while offering abortion services through separate revenue streams.
MSI, which refused to comply with the reinstated policy, is expected to lose $14 million in funding from the US Agency for International Development.
According to the organisation, this financial cutback could lead to the suspension of contraception services in several countries, potentially resulting in an additional 2.4 million unintended pregnancies.

World: US President Donald Trump selected Peter Hegseth, a former Fox News presenter, for the secretary of defence role. However, his nomination faced complications.

The US Senate confirmed Pete Hegseth as the new secretary of defence, marking one of the closest confirmation votes in modern history for the position, that required a tie-breaker from Vice President JD Vance in a late-night vote on Friday (Jan 24). US President Donald Trump took to Truth Social to congratulate Hegseth, saying, "Congratulations to Pete Hegseth. He will make a great Secretary of Defense!" The US Secretary of State <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/us-secretary-of-state-marco-rubio" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Marco Rubio</a>&nbsp;has ordered a pause on nearly all foreign aid programmes including possibly for Ukraine, but excluding military funding for Israel and Egypt, according to an internal memo circulated to US officials and embassies abroad.
The leaked memo follows an executive order issued by President <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/donald-trump" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Donald Trump</a> earlier in the week, which called for a 90-day pause on foreign development assistance to review spending efficiencies and ensure that the aid aligns with the president's foreign policy objectives.

<h2>Exceptions granted for emergency food aid and military aid to Israel, Egypt</h2>
Exceptions have been granted just for emergency food aid and military assistance to Israel, which has benefitted from expanded arms packages since the Gaza conflict, and Egypt, a longstanding recipient of US defence funding following its 1979 peace treaty with Israel.
Israel currently receives approximately $3.3 billion annually in foreign military financing, while Egypt&rsquo;s share is about $1.3 billion.&nbsp;
The memo read, &ldquo;No new funds shall be obligated for new awards or extensions of existing awards until each proposed new award or extension has been reviewed and approved&hellip; as consistent with President Trump&rsquo;s agenda.&rdquo;
It further instructs US officials to "immediately issue stop-work orders, consistent with the terms of the relevant award, until such time as the secretary shall determine, following a review."
This review, expected within 85 days, will determine whether foreign assistance aligns with the administration&rsquo;s foreign policy goals.

'Manufactured chaos': US freezes nearly all foreign aid including for Ukraine; military funding for Israel, Egypt excempted

Marco Rubio will pay his first trip as US secretary of state to Central American nations including Panama, where President <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/donald-trump" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Donald Trump</a> has threatened to seize the Panama Canal, a spokeswoman said Thursday.
Rubio, who is the first Hispanic and first fluent Spanish speaker to serve as the top US diplomat, has vowed to put a top priority on Trump's goal of curbing migration from Central American nations.
State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce said Rubio would travel starting late next week to Panama as well as Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala and the Dominican Republic.

"It's about making sure that if we're going to be safe and prosperous and in good shape, we've got to have an interest in our neighbors -- and in today's world, it's certainly South and Central America," Bruce said.
"There's a reason why this is the first trip. It signals how seriously he takes it," she said.
Bruce did not describe the details of any expected conversations on the Panama Canal. Trump in his inaugural address Monday vowed that the United States would be "taking it back."
Rubio in his confirmation hearing did not suggest military force but said the United States needed to address serious concerns about Chinese influence near the vital waterway between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
Panama, which has long been friendly to the United States, complained to the United Nations over Trump's threat.
President Jose Raul Mulino, during a panel at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, said that the canal "belongs to Panama and will continue to belong to Panama."

<h2>Enforcement against migration</h2>
Trump -- who during his campaign said that immigrants were "poisoning the blood of our country" -- has put a top priority on halting undocumented migration into the United States.
The Central American nations of El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras -- torn by endemic violence, poverty and natural disasters exacerbated by climate change -- have been among the top sources of migration.
Trump's predecessor Joe Biden vowed to look at the root causes of migration. Trump has quickly put an emphasis on enforcement, suspending a Biden program that gives asylum seekers a chance to make their case in an orderly way and threatening to use the military to help secure the US-Mexico border.
El Salvador's president, Nayib Bukele, has been a favorite of Trump supporters for his lethal and ruthless crackdown on crime. The president's son Donald Trump Jr. attended Bukele's second inauguration last year.
The Biden administration had a more distant relationship with Bukele, amid concerns over human rights, although it also largely worked with him as it sought to address migration.
Rubio's decision to visit Guatemala likely marks a continuation of US support for President Bernardo Arevalo, a once-obscure anti-corruption advocate who pulled off an upset election victory in 2023.

The Biden administration hailed Arevalo's victory and quickly moved to work with him as he pushed back against an entrenched elite that sought to stop him from taking office.
Arevalo has enjoyed some bipartisan support in Washington but his opponents have sought an alliance with fringe movements that refused to recognize Biden's 2020 victory over Trump.
Rubio, the son of Cuban immigrants, on taking office said he would stop State Department work that seeks to "facilitate or encourage mass migration," vowing to pursue Trump's goal of enforcement.

A federal judge in Seattle on Thursday (Jan 23) has temporarily blocked the enforcement of an executive order signed by President <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/donald-trump" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Donald Trump</a> on Monday (Jan 20), which aimed to restrict automatic birthright citizenship in the United States. The judge described the order as "blatantly unconstitutional."
US District Judge John Coughenour issued the temporary restraining order after a request from four Democratic-led states&mdash;Washington, Arizona, Illinois, and Oregon. The order prevents the Trump administration from implementing the policy, which was part of the president's broader efforts to address immigration.

Civil rights organisations and attorneys general from 22 states have filed five lawsuits against the policy, alleging it violates the 14th Amendment of the US Constitution. This amendment guarantees citizenship to anyone born on American soil.

'Blatantly unconstitutional,' Federal judge blocks Trump’s birthright citizenship order

US President <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/donald-trump" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Donald Trump</a> on Thursday (Jan 23) took aim at the European Union for what he describes as a highly imbalanced trade relationship. Speaking virtually at Davos summit, Trump expressed his dissatisfaction with the current state of trade between the US and the EU.
<h2>Trump criticises EU trade policies at Davos</h2>
&ldquo;From the standpoint of America, the EU treats us very, very unfairly, very badly,&rdquo; Trump said during his address at the World Economic Forum.

The 47th US president added, &ldquo;They make it very difficult to bring products into Europe, and yet they expect to be selling, and they do sell their products in the United States. So we have, you know, hundreds of billions of dollars of deficits with the EU, and nobody&rsquo;s happy with it. And we&rsquo;re going to do something about it.&rdquo;
&ldquo;They essentially don&rsquo;t take our farm products and they don&rsquo;t take our cars, yet they send cars to us by the millions. They put tariffs on things that we want to do ... We have some very big complaints with the EU,&rdquo; he added.
The EU had a trade surplus with the US in 2023, according to European Commission data.
Trump's comments came three days after he assumed office in his second term as president. Trade policies under Trump have been a central focus at Davos this year, especially his tariff threats targeting the EU, as well as other countries including China, Mexico, and Canada.
Earlier, on Monday, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said at Davos that the bloc is ready to work with Trump, noting that "no other economies in the world are as integrated as" the US and EU.&nbsp;
She also said recently that EU nations could potentially replace Russian liquified natural gas with American gas imports, something President Trump has repeatedly urged.

In December, Trump had warned that unless the EU increased its purchases of American oil and gas, it would face &ldquo;tariffs all the way.&rdquo; On Thursday, he reiterated the same saying, &ldquo;They want to be able to compete better, and you can&rsquo;t compete when you can&rsquo;t go through the approval process faster. There&rsquo;s no reason why it can&rsquo;t go faster ... I&rsquo;m trying to be constructive, because I love <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/europe" rel="dofollow">Europe</a>.&rdquo;
<h2>&lsquo;Tariffs if products aren't made in US&rsquo;</h2>
Trump further told economic leaders that they will have to pay tariffs if their products aren't made in the US.
"If you don&rsquo;t make your product in America, which is your prerogative, then very simply, you will have to pay a tariff&mdash;differing amounts, but a tariff," he said.
"Under Trump administration, there will be no better place on earth to create jobs, build factories, or grow a company than right here in the good old USA."
Trump has said earlier that he might impose tariffs of 25% on products from Canada and Mexico and 10% on goods from China.
<h2>US trade deficit and surplus with the EU</h2>
The United States is the largest market for EU exports, with machinery and vehicles accounting for the biggest trade deficit. In 2023, this gap amounted to &euro;102 billion ($106 billion). On the other hand, the US has a surplus in energy trade with the EU, valued at &euro;70 billion, along with a substantial surplus in services.
<h2>&lsquo;NATO members should raise defence spending to 5% of GDP&rsquo;</h2>
Trump further said that he is going to ask NATO members to increase their defence spending. &ldquo;I&rsquo;m also going to ask all NATO nations to increase defence spending to 5% of gross domestic product, which is what it should have been years ago,&rdquo; Trump said, repeating his old remarks. Defence ministers of several major US allies in Europe recently said that a contribution of 5% of GDP per country is unrealistic.

Trump slams ‘unfair’ EU trade policies, vows US will ‘do something about it’

US President <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/donald-trump" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Donald Trump</a> on Thursday (Jan 23) addressed the Davos summit virtually just days after moving into the White House following his inauguration. During his address at the World Economic Forum, the 47th US president said that he&rsquo;d like to sit down with Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war in Ukraine.

Noting that he has seen pictures of what&rsquo;s going on, Trump said, &ldquo;It&rsquo;s a carnage, and we really have to stop that war,&rdquo; though he made no mention of any plans on how his administration seeks to end the war that began with Russia&rsquo;s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.&nbsp;
<h2>'If oil price came down, the Russia-Ukraine war would end immediately'</h2>
President Trump further said in his address that he would ask Saudi Arabia and OPEC to bring down the cost of oil, adding that lower oil prices could end the war in Ukraine immediately.
"I'm also going to ask Saudi Arabia and OPEC to bring down the cost of oil, you've got to bring it down. If the price came down, the Russia-Ukraine war would end immediately," he said.

When asked whether he believed a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine could be reached by the time he addresses the summit again next year, Trump replied, &ldquo;Well, you&rsquo;re going to have to ask Russia, Ukraine is ready to make a deal.&rdquo;
Responding to a question from the WEF President and CEO, about the relationship between US and China during the next four years, Trump said, "I think that we're going to have a very good relationship. All we want is fairness. We just want a level playing field. Right now it is not a fair relationship, the trade deficit is massive."
Trump spoke positively about Chinese President Xi Jinping, saying, &ldquo;I like President Xi very much, I've always liked him.&rdquo;
<h2>'China can help stop the war between Russia and Ukraine'</h2>

"We want to see if we can denuclearise, and I think that is possible," he added.
<h2>Trump threatens tariffs, sanctions on Russia</h2>
A day before his virtual speech, Trump had, in a post on Truth Social,&nbsp;threatened tariffs and intensified sanctions on Russia if it did not withdraw troops from Ukraine.
He said that Russia&rsquo;s economic situation is worsening, urging President Putin to &ldquo;settle now and stop this ridiculous war.&rdquo; Trump added, &ldquo;Without a deal, I have no other choice but to put high levels of taxes, tariffs, and sanctions on anything being sold by Russia to the United States, and various other participating countries.&rdquo;

'Nothing less than revolution,' US President Donald Trump addresses Davos summit, promises massive tax cuts

Canada vowed strong pushback while Mexico urged calm on Tuesday in the face of US President Donald Trump's trade threats that risk throwing their economies into disarray.
The US president has accused both neighbours of being lax in preventing migrants and illicit drugs from coming into the United States and called for a tightening of the borders.
Hours after taking his oath of office on Monday, he signalled that 25 per cent punitive tariffs against the United States' two major trading partners could come as early as February 1.

He also said he would order troops to its border with Mexico to stem migrant flows.
"Canada will respond and everything is on the table," Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told a news conference, adding that Ottawa's reaction would be "robust and rapid and measured," but also match dollar for dollar the US tariffs on Canadian imports.
A Canadian government source told AFP that Ottawa is considering higher duties on US goods including steel products, ceramics like toilets and sinks, glassware and orange juice -- in a first phase of tariffs that could be extended.
Provincial and opposition leaders have also called for blocking exports of Canadian oil, electricity and critical minerals.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/mexico-president-mocks-trumps-gulf-of-america-proposal-suggests-mexican-america-instead-8603211">Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum</a>, meanwhile, downplayed the tariff threat while urging calm in the face of Trump's announcement of severe new restrictions on migration.
"It's important to always keep a cool head and refer to signed agreements, beyond actual speeches," she said at her regular morning conference.
<h2>Bad neighbors</h2>
Trump defended the tariffs on his first day in office, telling reporters as he signed an array of executive orders that Canada and Mexico are allowing "vast numbers of people to come in, and fentanyl to come in."
He signed an order directing agencies to study a host of trade issues including deficits, unfair practices and currency manipulation.
These could pave the way for further duties.
Sheinbaum, who has reacted to months of threats from Trump with a mix of pragmatism and firmness, noted that several of the measures dated from Trump's first mandate.
On trade, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/canada" rel="dofollow">Canada</a> and Mexico are theoretically protected by the Canada-United States-Mexico Free Trade Agreement (USMCA), signed during Trump's first term and hailed as "the best and most important trade agreement ever signed by the United States."
The pact replaced an earlier continental trade agreement from the 1990s and included new labour provisions aimed in particular at improving worker rights in Mexico.
It is due to be reviewed in 2026.
"For now, the trade treaty remains in effect," Sheinbaum noted.
Mexico leapfrogged China in 2023 to become the United States's largest trading partner. That year, the American trade deficit with Mexico rose to US$150 billion.
Trade conflicts between the three signatories have multiplied in recent years, concerning for example American genetically modified corn, Canadian dairy products, and trade in auto parts.
Trudeau on Tuesday warned that a trade war would cost the United States, but also "there will be costs for Canadians."
"This is a crucial moment for Canada and Canadians," he said.
According to economists, a trade war could plunge Canada -- which sends approximately 75 per cent of its exports to the United States, led by its energy and auto sectors -- into a recession.
One scenario from Scotiabank suggests that any bilateral trade disruption could slash more than five per cent from Canadian GDP, increase unemployment significantly and fuel inflation.
US GDP could fall by 0.9 per cent, analyst Jean-Fran&ccedil;ois Perrault said in a research note.
According to the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, tit-for-tat tariffs would cause Canadian GDP to fall by 2.6 per cent, while American GDP would suffer a decline of 1.6 per cent.

'Retaliation vs keeping it cool': Canada and Mexico opt for different strategies in face of Trump threats

US President Donald Trump has dismissed Admiral Linda Lee Fagan, the head of the US Coast Guard, citing her excessive emphasis on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives.
Fagan, who made history as the first woman to lead a branch of the US Armed Forces, was removed from her position on Tuesday. This comes after Trump said that he would eliminate DEI programs across federal agencies.

‘Racist, sexist diversity nonsense’: Trump fires first female Coast Guard chief, Admiral Linda Lee Fagan

Immigration agents are set to begin nationwide operations on Tuesday (Jan 21), aimed at detaining and deporting undocumented migrants, according to Tom Homan, the border policy chief under Donald Trump.
In an interview with Fox Business Network, Homan said that <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/trump-to-sign-over-200-executive-orders-on-border-security-energy-and-living-costs-on-first-day-8636415" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Immigration and Customs Enforcement</a> (ICE) officers would be stepping up enforcement efforts after what he described as a period of limited action in recent years.
Meanwhile, as per a report by Fox News, Donald Trump&rsquo;s administration has rescinded ban issued under Joe Biden that stopped immigration raids in and around schools, healthcare facilities, churches and facilities providing disaster relief, among other locations.
<h2>'ICE is going to start doing their job and more'</h2>
&ldquo;ICE is going to start doing their job and more. They haven&rsquo;t been able to do the job for the last four years, and now they&rsquo;re going to start enforcing the law like there should be,&rdquo; Homan said.
While Homan did not disclose specific locations for the raids, he confirmed that the operations would take place across the United States. He avoided mentioning whether &ldquo;sanctuary cities&rdquo; that don't cooperate with federal immigration authorities, would be a particular focus.

&ldquo;They&rsquo;re going to do it throughout the country. We have offices throughout the country, and every ICE officer is going to be out there and enforce the law starting tomorrow morning,&rdquo; he added.
<h2>Trump announces 'national emergency' on Mexico border</h2>
These raids are part of a broader effort by the Trump administration to implement strict immigration policies. On Monday, President Trump signed several executive orders targeting undocumented migrants and aiming to boost security at the US-Mexico border.
In his first address from the Oval Office as the 47th president, Trump declared a <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/donald-trump-reinstates-winston-churchill-bust-gives-oval-office-a-makeover-8639820">national emergency</a>, which he said justified deploying US troops to the southern border.

The executive order read, &ldquo;Because of the gravity and emergency of this present danger and imminent threat, it is necessary for the Armed Forces to take all appropriate action to assist the Department of Homeland Security in obtaining full operational control of the southern border.&rdquo;
<h2>Trump to end birthright citizenship </h2>
Additionally, Trump introduced an order seeking to redefine eligibility for American citizenship under the US Constitution, targeting the principle of birthright citizenship guaranteed by the 14th Amendment. Speaking to reporters, Trump described this as a significant step: &ldquo;Birthright &ndash; that&rsquo;s a big one.&rdquo;
The executive order, which aims to deny automatic citizenship to US-born children of undocumented immigrants, is set to take effect in 30 days.

World: On Monday hours after his inauguration, President Trump signed several executive orders targeting undocumented migrants and aiming to boost security at the US-Mexico border.

Immigration agents are set to begin nationwide operations on Tuesday (Jan 21), aimed at detaining and deporting undocumented migrants, according to Tom Homan, the border policy chief under Donald Trump. In an interview with Fox Business Network, Homan said that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers would be stepping up enforcement efforts after what he described as a period of limited action in recent years. Meanwhile, as per a report by Fox News, Donald Trump’s administration has rescinded ban issued under Joe Biden that stopped immigration raids in and around schools, healthcare facilities, churches and facilities providing disaster relief, among other locations. 'ICE is going to start doing their job and more' “ICE is going to start doing their job and more. They haven’t been able to do the job for the last four years, and now they’re going to start enforcing the law like there should be,” Homan said. While Homan did not disclose specific locations for the raids, he confirmed that the operations would take place across the United States. He avoided mentioning whether “sanctuary cities” that don't cooperate with federal immigration authorities, would be a particular focus. Speaking to reporters, Trump described this as a significant step: “Birthright – that’s a big one.” The executive order, which aims to deny automatic citizenship to US-born children of undocumented immigrants, is set to take effect in 30 days.
