‘America is back': White House website revamped as Trump 2.0 begins

Donald Trump is set to be sworn in as the 47th President of the United States on (Jan 20), marking a famed comeback to the White House. As the world watches this historic moment, attention also turns to his evolving relationship with tech magnate Elon Musk.
Though Musk now describes himself as the &ldquo;first buddy&rdquo; of the president-elect, their relationship hasn&rsquo;t always been smooth. In fact, their early encounters were anything but friendly.

<h2>A rocky start</h2>
In 2016, Musk openly criticised Trump&rsquo;s suitability for the presidency, questioning his character and ability to lead. Speaking to CNBC at the time, Musk said, &ldquo;I feel a bit stronger that he is not the right guy. He doesn&rsquo;t seem to have the sort of character that reflects well on the United States.&rdquo;
Their professional relationship soon hit another hurdle. In June 2017, Musk resigned from Trump&rsquo;s presidential advisory boards after the US quit the Paris Climate Agreement. Musk made his stance clear on X (formerly Twitter):

&ldquo;Am departing presidential councils. Climate change is real. Leaving Paris is not good for America or the world.&rdquo;
<h2>Changing dynamics</h2>
Years later, Trump extended an olive branch, describing <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/elon-musk" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Musk</a> in January 2022 as one of the world&rsquo;s &ldquo;great geniuses&rdquo; and even comparing him to inventor Thomas Edison. However, the goodwill was short-lived. By mid-2022, Trump dismissed Musk as &ldquo;another bulls*** artist.&rdquo;
Things began to shift in September 2023, when Musk appeared to align with some of Trump&rsquo;s policies. Notably, Musk voiced his support for stricter immigration measures, including a US-Mexico border wall, a hallmark of Trump&rsquo;s platform. Musk wrote on X:
&ldquo;We actually do need a wall and we need to require people to have some shred of evidence to claim asylum to enter, as everyone is doing that...&rdquo;
<h2>From neutrality to support</h2>
Despite warming up to Trump&rsquo;s ideas, Musk remained neutral ahead of the 2024 presidential election. In March, he publicly stated he wouldn&rsquo;t financially support any candidate. But this stance changed dramatically in July&nbsp;2024 after an assassination attempt on Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania.
In the aftermath, Musk endorsed Trump and pledged substantial financial backing, reportedly committing $45 million monthly to a new pro-Trump super PAC, America PAC.
<h2>'I&rsquo;m not just MAGA &mdash; I&rsquo;m dark MAGA'</h2>
By August 2024, Musk&rsquo;s support became more visible. He hosted <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/trump-inauguration" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Trump</a> on X for an extended conversation during which he proposed forming a commission on government efficiency and offered to lead it. Trump answered in the affirmative, saying, "I'd love it." A few days later, Musk declared, &ldquo;I am willing to serve.&rdquo;
The same month, Musk joined Trump on stage at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, donning a black &ldquo;Make America Great Again&rdquo; cap. Speaking to the crowd, he said, &ldquo;As you can see, I&rsquo;m not just MAGA &mdash; I&rsquo;m dark MAGA.&rdquo;
In October, Musk announced a unique initiative, pledging $1 million daily to voters in swing states who signed his America PAC&rsquo;s petition supporting free speech and gun rights.
<h2>Election night sleepover</h2>
On election night in November 2024, Musk joined Trump and his allies at Mar-a-Lago to celebrate a sweeping Republican victory.
As Trump prepares to take the oath of office on Monday (20 January), Musk will be by his side. The future of their partnership remains to be seen, but it&rsquo;s clear that their relationship has come a long way.

United States President-elect Donald Trump announced the launch of his new line of fragrances on his social media app, Truth Social, on Sunday, December 8, while sharing a picture of himself sitting next to First Lady Jill Biden with the caption, “A fragrance your enemies can't resist!”

The fragrance line “Fight, Fight, Fight,” includes both perfumes for women and cologne for men, catering to a wider market, and costs $199 each. According to the official website, Trump is also selling bundles of two or more fragrances with a 50 per cent off on the second item.

The image shared by Trump is from the reopening ceremony of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris on December 7, where the two, along with several other heads of states and officials were present. Trump announces new fragrance line 'Fight, Fight, Fight' by sharing photo with Jill Biden

US President-elect Donald Trump nominated Howard Lutnick, the co-chair of his transition team, as his commerce secretary on Tuesday – a choice set to bring a tougher stance on China from the incoming administration.

Lutnick will also lead the country's tariff and trade agenda, with "additional direct responsibility for the Office of the United States Trade Representative," Trump said in a statement.

Tariffs are a key part of Trump's economic agenda, and he has promised sweeping duties on all imports when he returns to the White House.

Lutnick is chief executive of financial services firm Cantor Fitzgerald, and a Trump ally originally tipped as a frontrunner for treasury secretary.

But he was instead named to helm Commerce, a smaller department that works to boost US industry and has a key role in policy to shore up the US semiconductor sector and reduce reliance on Asia.

Under President Joe Biden, the Commerce Department stepped up export controls on critical technologies like quantum computing and semiconductor manufacturing goods, taking aim at access by adversaries like Beijing.

Trump's administration could harden this stance.

Lutnick has, during the US election campaign, expressed support for a tariff level of 60 percent on Chinese goods, alongside a 10 per cent tariff on all imports.

Both are among proposals that Trump has floated, with the Republican taking aim at countries which have been "ripping us off for years."

Lutnick also previously lamented the loss of manufacturing jobs in the United States and offshoring to China.

"I'm all in with Donald Trump," Lutnick told podcaster Anthony Pompliano last month.

In the same interview, he slammed electric cars as "coastal elite nonsense" and blamed China for being the source of fentanyl in the United States.

The deadly drug, many times more powerful than heroin, is responsible for tens of thousands of overdose deaths a year.

"China is attacking America from its guts," he charged.

<h2>Crypto support</h2>

Lutnick was initially tipped to head the Treasury Department but a tussle over the position spilled into the public eye last weekend.

Trump's health secretary pick Robert F. Kennedy Jr. expressed support for Lutnick, saying on social media that "Bitcoin will have no stronger advocate" than him.

The world's richest man Elon Musk also threw his support behind Lutnick for Treasury chief while calling the other top contender, hedge fund manager Scott Bessent, "a business-as-usual choice."

"Business-as-usual is driving America bankrupt, so we need change one way or another," said Musk, who Trump has tapped to lead a new Department of Government Efficiency, on social media.

Besides Cantor Fitzgerald, Lutnick heads financial technology firm BGC Group and real estate services firm Newmark Group.

He graduated from Haverford College and has a degree in economics, according to his biography on Cantor's website.

As co-chair of Trump's transition team, Lutnick has been identifying new hires for the president-elect's administration.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) on Monday (Dec 25) said it was investigating threats being made against the Colorado Supreme Court justices who ruled last week that ex-President Donald Trump was ineligible to become a presidential candidate.

“The FBI is aware of the situation and working with local law enforcement,” FBI Public Affairs Officer Vikki Migoya said in a statement.&nbsp;

“We will vigorously pursue investigations of any threat or use of violence committed by someone who uses extremist views to justify their actions regardless of motivation,” he added.

A spokesperson for the Colorado Judicial Branch said the threats would be handled by local police authorities, without giving any further explanation.

Meanwhile, the Denver Police Department (DPD) said it responded to a report by a justice’s residence Thursday evening (Dec 21) but it appeared to be a “hoax.”

FBI investigating reports of violent threats to Colorado judges who ruled against Trump

Prosecutors in New York have reportedly set a deadline of 24 hours for former US President Donald Trump to make any last arguments with respect to a case against his family business. A report by the Washington Post on Sunday claimed that criminal charges could be filed against Trump and this could be his last chance to respond.

Manhattan district attorney Cyrus Vance and New York attorney general Letitia James are considering filing criminal charges against Donald Trump’s company as an entity. The deadline makes the potential of charges more grave than anticipated.&nbsp;

It was reported on Friday that Vance could announce the criminal charges against the Trump Organization and its lead financial officer Allen Weisselberg in less than a week.

These charges would be the first to be put forward against Trump and his business dealings&nbsp;by Cyrus Vance.

According to The Guardian, an indictment against the Trump Organization could cause the company to go bankrupt by undermining its relationships with banks and other business partners. According to Vance’s office, they’re currently looking into “possible extensive and protracted criminal conduct” at the Trump Organization.

These investigations are looking into tax and insurance fraud, along with claims of falsification of business records.

Even in the absence of any charges, Vance’s investigation could work as a roadblock in Trump’s hopes of becoming president again.

The former US president has been largely silent after being banned on Twitter on Facebook for his role in inciting the Capitol riots.

As part of the investigation, James is assessing whether the Trump Organization inflated the values of some properties in a bid to get better terms on loans. In addition, James is investigating whether the value of these properties was lowered to obtain property tax breaks.

New York prosecutors give Donald Trump 24-hour deadline on legal action: Report

Former United States President Donald Trump has remained largely missing from&nbsp;the public arena after Joe Biden took office.&nbsp; For months, Trump said that the elections were fraudulent without providing any evidence for his claims.&nbsp;

He was stripped of his privileges on social media websites like Twitter and Facebook after an attempted insurrection at the US Capitol caused multiple casualties. Since then, Trump’s voice has largely disappeared from social media platforms. Last month, a blog page was launched for the former president.&nbsp;

Now, his blog has been removed from the website. On Wednesday, Trump aide Jason Miller said that the page, officially known "From the Desk of Donald J. Trump," has been permanently taken down. "It was just auxiliary to the broader efforts we have and are working on," Miller told Reuters.

Earlier, Donald Trump’s team had announced plans to launch a social media platform. But no details were revealed.

"I'm hoping to have more information on the broader efforts soon, but I do not have a precise awareness of timing," Miller told Reuters in an email statement.&nbsp;

The blog, now defunct was billed as a place to “speak freely and safely”. It had posts from Trump which could be shared on social media networks like Twitter and Facebook. Twitter has asserted that its ban on Trump was permanent, regardless of whether he reruns for office.&nbsp;

Before being banned, Trump had over 88 million followers on Twitter. Recently, Facebook’s oversight board said that the company did the right thing by banning Trump, but criticised the indefinite nature of the ban.

YouTube, where he is also banned said that Trump’s account may be reinstated when it decides that the risk of violence has subsided.

Facebook Inc on Monday announced that it would give its verdict on former US President Donald Trump’s suspension on the platform on May 5. The company’s independent oversight board&nbsp; announced the decision on Twitter. The verdict would decide the fate of Trump’s future on Facebook and Instagram.

Trump was removed from social media platforms after the January 6 riots at the US Capitol which reportedly were spearheaded by his supporters. The company feared further violence which could be caused by his posts and decided to block.&nbsp;

Since then, the case has been passed over to the company’s oversight board. The board was created by Facebook in response to criticism over how the company handled problematic content on its website.&nbsp;

In mid-April the company said that it had extended the public comment period on the case. According to the board, the Trump case has received 9,000 comments so far, more than any other case.

"Yes, 100%. And the polls show that everybody wants me to do it. 100%, I'm thinking about running," the twice-impeached former president said. His statement came after Trump’s former personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani's Manhattan apartment and offices were raided by federal authorities.

Trump, who was often labelled as 'racist' and was opposed to immigration also complained about the inflow of immigrants under the Biden rule. "Now everybody's pouring into our country, it's out of control. It could destroy our country if it keeps going and the longer it goes, the harder it is to stop. We had the best border that we've ever had in history admitted by everybody, and all they had to do is leave it," he said.

"They're going to give our country away to China. China will take over this country if they don't do something very quickly. And they've been very, very weak on China. They don't want to do it," he continued.

Alleging Biden of being selfish and benefitting from China, Trump claimed the Biden family has earned money out of China and is therefore not taking strict actions against China.

Facebook to decide Donald Trump's fate on its platforms on May 5

The independent Oversight Board has announced to delay its decision on former US President Donald Trump`s ban from Facebook and Instagram that will now arrive "in the coming weeks".

The board, constituted by Facebook with 20 members from across the world last year, said it is reviewing more than 9,000 responses before it delivers the verdict on Trump`s ban on the social media giant.

"We extended the public comments deadline for this case, receiving 9,000+ responses. The Board`s commitment to carefully reviewing all comments has extended the case timeline, in line with the Board`s bylaws," the Board said in a tweet late Friday.

Facebook banned Trump from its platforms after the Capitol Hill attack on January 6.

Company CEO Mark Zuckerberg said that "the risks of allowing President Trump to continue to use our service during this period are simply too great".

Trump is still banned from using Facebook and its other platforms.

The Board said it will announce "its decision on the case concerning former US President Trump`s indefinite suspension from Facebook and Instagram in the coming weeks".

Earlier this week, the Board noted that it will begin accepting cases from Facebook and Instagram users who believe the company wrongfully allowed harmful content to remain on its platforms.

The content eligible for review includes posts, status updates, photos, videos, comments, and shares.

Decisions made through the Board`s independent judgment are binding on Facebook.

The Oversight Board on January made 17 recommendations, based on the six cases, for Facebook to improve its content moderation.

Since October 2020, users have been able to appeal to the Oversight Board about their own content being removed.

So far, the Board has received over 300,000 user appeals and thousands of public comments.

Oversight Board delays decision on Donald Trump's Facebook ban

The Republican Party intends to keep using former President Donald Trump`s name in fundraising pitches and other materials, a lawyer for the party said on Monday, despite a cease-and-desist letter from Trump last week.

The letter sent by lawyers for Trump on Friday to the Republican National Committee, National Republican Congressional Campaign and National Republican Senate Campaign had ramped up tension between the two camps as Trump seeks to preserve his political viability post-election.

A Trump adviser said on Saturday that Trump was sensitive to the use of his name and likeness for branding purposes and was irked the three groups have supported Republican lawmakers who joined Democrats in voting to impeach him over the Jan. 6 storming of the U.S. Capitol by Trump supporters.

In a response letter, the Republican National Committee said that Trump "reaffirmed" to RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel over the weekend that he approves of the party`s current use of his name, wrote Justin Riemer, the RNC`s top lawyer.

The party also argued it had "every right to refer to public figures as it engages in core, First Amendment-protected political speech."

The letter indicated Trump would participate in the party`s donor retreat scheduled for next month in Palm Beach, Florida, which is home to Trump`s Mar-a-Lago resort.

A representative for Trump did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the letter.

But in a statement late on Monday, Trump declared: "No more money for RINOS," the acronym for the pejorative term "Republicans in Name Only."

"They do nothing but hurt the Republican Party and our great voting base — they will never lead us to Greatness," Trump said before urging supporters to donate to his own super PAC.

In an effort separate from the Republican Party, Trump is using his Save America super PAC to raise money in part to help handpicked Republican candidates in the 2022 congressional elections. Some of them are expected to challenge Republican incumbents whom Trump considers disloyal.

Still, Trump has committed to helping Republicans try to win back control of the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate in the 2022 elections that will be an early referendum on the leadership of Democratic President Joe Biden.

Former director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) James Comey recently said that he wants US President Donald Trump impeached for inciting a riot at the US Capitol on January 6, but does not want to see him prosecuted.

Comey believes that prosecuting Trump would give him the attention he craves, paving way for years of the “Donald Trump show”, Comey told Sky News.

He added how his prosecution could overshadow the progress by Joe Biden in attempting to unite America, while saying that it’s what Trump “would want the most”.

"I have never seen an adult with a greater hunger for affirmation than Donald Trump”, he said.

Trump is immune from prosecution as president, but in three days, it could all change, opening pathways for him to be charged for crimes committed before or during his presidential term.

He also referred to Trump as the “dictionary definition of a demagogue”, while adding that he aimed not just to lie to the people, but also to destroy the idea of the existence of truth.

Bolt was the world's first social networking website, and remained active between 1996 and 2007. 25 years since its inception, the world is facing a peculiar challenge of filtering content and engagement on social media in a bid to contain hate speech, which was blamed for the recent attack on US Capitol which left five people dead.

But can we trust social media giants? How can we assume that those claiming to solve the problem aren’t helping themselves?

For weeks, Trump lied about the election being stolen from him. And for his excesses, he was simply flagged. For four years, Trump was allowed to spread hatred. Every time tech CEOs were pulled up, they said Trump's posts have political value and blocking them would mean blocking free speech.

Years of pent-up hate led to what we saw at Washington on&nbsp;January 6, and social media helped connect those responsible for the carnage, which was live streamed on social media.

The thin line between free speech and hate speech, protest and incitement of violence is dictated by ideologies, and shouldn’t be up for tech firms to tell. Defining hate has to be a collective process; governments and private entities need to come up with mechanisms to jointly monitor and regulate what goes on social media..

This would also mean amending the rules of the land to regulate the digital world too. And to also ensure - that the regulations aren't misused, especially- by tech giants.

The youngest victim of the 2007 massacre in Baghdad’s Nisour Square, committed by Blackwater mercenaries whom Donald Trump pardoned Tuesday, was a 9-year-old boy named Ali Kinani.

In a 2010 documentary, journalist Jeremy Scahill interviewed Ali’s father, Mohammed Hafedh Abdulrazzaq Kinani, who spoke of how he’d welcomed the U.S. invasion of his country and brought along his son to greet U.S. soldiers. “The first day the American Army entered Baghdad, I handed out juice and candy in the street to celebrate our liberation from Saddam,” said Kinani. Scahill called him “that rare personification of the neoconservative narrative about the U.S. invasion.”

On Sept. 16, 2007, Kinani was driving toward the traffic circle at Nisour Square with his sister, her children and Ali when guards from Blackwater opened fire with machine guns and grenade launchers. (Blackwater, a private security company, has since changed its name to Academi.) Ali was one of 17 people killed. According to The Washington Post, a U.S. military report found that there had been no provocation. “It was obviously excessive, it was obviously wrong,” a military official told the paper. An FBI investigator reportedly described it as the “My Lai Massacre of Iraq.”

The U.S. Embassy offered Ali’s family a $10,000 condolence payment. After initially refusing the money, they donated half of it to the family of a U.S. soldier killed in Iraq. “They wanted to do that to honor and acknowledge the sacrifice of those men and women that had come over to Iraq to fight for them and free them from Saddam Hussein,” Paul Dickinson, a lawyer who represented Kinani and others in a civil suit against Blackwater, told me.

Gen. Raymond Odierno, then the commander of U.S. forces in Iraq, wrote to Ali’s mother, “In the face of your family’s own personal tragedy, your act of kindness and compassion for grieving American families is truly remarkable.”

Until Tuesday, the American system worked to give Ali’s family a modicum of justice. Blackwater settled with the family. The guards were prosecuted criminally. The process was torturous, with several roadblocks, but powerful figures in the United States were determined to see it through. After a judge dismissed the charges on procedural grounds, Vice President Joe Biden promised, in a 2010 news conference in Baghdad, that there would be an appeal. “The United States is determined, determined to hold accountable anyone who commits crimes against the Iraqi people,” he said.

Eventually three of the Blackwater guards — Paul Slough, Evan Liberty and Dustin Heard — were convicted of voluntary manslaughter and other charges. A fourth, Nicholas Slatten, was convicted of murder and last year sentenced to life in prison. Kinani moved to America and became a citizen, though he was back in Iraq when the BBC reached him Wednesday. Until just days ago, he’d felt that the legal system in the United States had been “very fair with me,” he said.

Then came Tuesday’s pardon spree, which included the Blackwater killers along with some Russiagate felons, corrupt ex-congressmen and others. It was perhaps not surprising that the president acted to free the mercenaries; Trump’s enthusiasm for war crimes is well known, and last year he pardoned three men accused or convicted of them. Because of Biden’s words in 2010, some conservatives called the perpetrators of the Nisour Square massacre the “Biden four,” giving Trump an extra incentive to let them go. Erik Prince, who founded Blackwater, is a close Trump ally and the brother of his education secretary, Betsy DeVos.

Neither the predictability of these pardons, however, nor our dulled capacity for shock lessens their grotesqueness. The last days of Trump’s reign have been an orgy of impunity as he hands out indulgences like party favors and rubs America’s face in his power to put his supporters beyond ordinary law. On Wednesday, Trump pardoned even more cronies, including, most egregiously, his former campaign chair Paul Manafort, a likely reward for Manafort’s help undermining Robert Mueller’s investigation. But even in this low moment, the pardons of the Blackwater killers stand out for their depravity.

They also exemplify a core tenet of Trumpism: absolute license for some and absolute submission for others. Nowhere is that truer than in Trump’s conception of the relationship between U.S. soldiers and paramilitaries and foreigners.

Last year, Trump intervened to reverse a demotion of Eddie Gallagher, a Navy SEAL special operations chief who took a celebratory photo with a corpse and was described by men under his command as “freaking evil” and “toxic.” But the president didn’t just spare Gallagher. He lionized him, and his movement made him an icon. The New York Times described Gallagher “making appearances at influential conservative gatherings and rubbing elbows with Mr. Trump’s inner circle at Mar-a-Lago.”

You could argue that Trump has simply stripped pretense from the dynamics that always drove the “war on terror.” As Spencer Ackerman wrote in The Daily Beast, “Blackwater fed from the same American logic of occupation — the same impunity — that turned even those Iraqis willing to work for the U.S. into ‘local nationals’ who had to enter dining halls on U.S. military bases through separate doorways.”

But if the approach to Iraq that preceded Trump was infested with hypocrisy, that hypocrisy at least revealed an aspiration to a humane foreign policy. That aspiration did more than flatter the sensibilities of liberals and neoconservatives. It could be leveraged to allow a man like Kinani to make demands of the country that occupied his.

Trump’s pardon, Kinani told the BBC, made him feel as if Ali, who should now be 22, had been killed again. Before, he said, he felt that no one was “above the law.” No more.

“I feel I’m nothing today. I feel I’m nothing. I lost my son, and I feel I’m nothing,” Kinani said. By all indications, the president of the United States agrees.

The youngest victim of the 2007 massacre in Baghdad’s Nisour Square, committed by Blackwater mercenaries whom Donald Trump pardoned Tuesday, was a 9-year-old boy named Ali Kinani.

Scahill called him “that rare personification of the neoconservative narrative about the U.S. invasion.” On Sept. An FBI investigator reportedly described it as the “My Lai Massacre of Iraq.” The U.S. Gen. Raymond Odierno, then the commander of U.S. forces in Iraq, wrote to Ali’s mother, “In the face of your family’s own personal tragedy, your act of kindness and compassion for grieving American families is truly remarkable.” Until Tuesday, the American system worked to give Ali’s family a modicum of justice. Trump’s most disgusting pardons

Incumbent US President Donald Trump has a few weeks left in the White House, and now he wants to save his allies and children from prosecution. Once they leave the White House, Trump and his inner circle could be sued. Until Trump holds office, he is immune to any legal action.

Reportedly, Donald Trump is considering a way to keep his kids and allies safe from prosecution. Trump has discussed with his advisers whether he could fetch pre-emptive pardons to protect his three eldest children - Donald Trump Junior, Eric Trump and Ivanka Trump along with his son-in-law Jared Kushner and his personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani.

Why is Trump mulling that?

Reportedly, Trump is concerned that the US Justice Department might prosecute his inner circle. Donald Trump Junior has been under investigation for his contacts with Russians during the 2016 election campaign.

Jared Kushner faces the charge of lying to federal authorities about his contacts with foreigners. There are no clear charges against Eric Trump, Ivanka Trump or Rudy Giuliani yet. But the legal scrutiny against team Trump is tightening.

The US Justice Department has opened an investigation into an alleged "bribery for pardon" scheme at the White House. Allegedly, during Trump's tenure an individual offered a substantial political donation in exchange for a presidential pardon. The court filings are heavily redacted and nobody knows if Donald Trump or any members of his inner circle are named in this case. Donald Trump called the official investigation fake news.

A presidential pardon is an action by a sitting president to completely set aside the punishment for a federal crime. Pardons that pre-empt criminal charges are not common. Perhaps the most famous example of one is when Gerald Ford gave a pardon to Richard Nixon.

Ford succeeded Nixon when he was forced to leave office after the “watergate” scandal. After taking over, Ford gave a full and unconditional pardon to Nixon for any crimes that he might have committed against the United States as president. Donald Trump claims he can pardon myself. No one has done it before, which is why the move is bound to trigger a legal challenge.

Setbacks continue

US Attorney general William Barr has now said that there is no evidence of widespread voter fraud that could change the outcome of this year's election. American attorneys and FBI agents have been working to follow up on specific complaints, but have been unable to find any evidence to substantiate Trump’s claims.

“This is incredibly significant for the attorney general to come out and say there is no widespread voter fraud that would impact the outcome of the election. It you know, directly contradicts what we've heard from the president and his allies who have alleged that there is such fraud. But the attorney general was very clear here. The justice department had investigated specific instances where, you know, allegations had been made. They've looked into these claims and they've determined there was no evidence of widespread fraud”, Michael Balsamo, Associated Press’ Justice Department reporter said.

Despite that, the Trump campaign has moved the American supreme court, and a petition challenging the results from Wisconsin has been filed. As Biden prepares for his inauguration, it looks like Trump is unwilling to go down without a fight.

Why does US President Trump want pre-emptive pardons for himself and family?

Deep inside a 10-block-long factory outlet mall in China, the people who supply Americans with their plastic dinosaurs and “Kiss My Bass” baseball caps are confident about an election victory for President Donald Trump.

Trump’s campaign paraphernalia — hats, banners, mugs and practically anything else that can carry a logo — has been selling briskly at shops in the vast wholesale market in the Chinese city of Yiwu. By contrast, shop owners said during recent visits, bulk orders for materials supporting former Vice President Joe Biden have been almost nonexistent.

“We’ve had four or five shoppers for Trump materials each month,” said Ge Lu, a salesman at one of about 100 shops specializing just in flags, referring to big purchasers who buy banners by the thousands. “We’ve had one Biden shopper this year.”

The place isn’t for the average shopper. Yiwu is home to the world’s largest wholesale market, where global retailers look for items to stock on their own shelves. In building after cavernous building, buyers for companies big and small pick through stalls featuring hats, T-shirts, banners, face masks, baby toys, knapsacks, modeling clay and practically any other manufactured product that will delight the world’s fickle consumers.

It is also home to what Chinese watchers of U.S. politics — a nervous group these days, given souring relations between the two countries and Beijing’s tighter limits on conversation — call the Yiwu Index. Big demand for a presidential candidate’s merchandise, goes the theory, translates into big voter turnout in November.

Right now, according to the informal and highly unscientific index, Trump leads Biden substantially.

“Trump still has the better chance,” said Zhang Zhijiang, the owner of a caps and hats factory in Jiangsu province who keeps a sales office in the Yiwu market.

Trump might welcome the news from Yiwu. He trails Biden in nationwide polls and in a majority of key battleground states just a week before the election. His campaign has been shaken by the coronavirus, which continues to spread relentlessly through the United States and has even struck the White House.

Followers of the Yiwu Index believe it is reliable, however, and they have history on their side. In 2016, the index consistently predicted a Trump victory. In the final weeks of the campaign, demand for Hillary Clinton hats and other souvenirs weakened considerably.

“They started off even, but then they stopped selling, and later, Trump sold more,” said Dai Fuli, the owner of a baseball cap factory in the city of Qingdao who maintains an outlet in Yiwu.

China is watching the election nervously. Trump launched a trade war against Beijing and has taken a more confrontational approach on issues like high-tech export controls, industrial espionage, Taiwan and the South China Sea.

At the same time, some in China expect little improvement under a Biden administration. They worry that Biden might even step up criticism of China’s human rights record while strengthening U.S. alliances with China’s neighbors and with Europe to limit China’s rise.

Official anxiety has led to light coverage of the election. Chinese state media has reported the large role that money plays and urged without success that China policy not become a political issue. On Chinese social media, Trump’s frequent interruptions during debates with Biden attracted widespread attention.

Given the political sensitivities, the government-controlled market has banned big displays of campaign merchandise for fear of looking partisan. Many merchants declined to speak during the recent visits.

Formally named the Yiwu International Trade City, it boasts 12 times the floor space of the Empire State Building, making it look like a small city. Much of the complex was hastily and even shoddily built two decades ago, giving its prematurely aging buildings a ramshackle look.

It has 70,000 shops, and transactions taking place under its many roofs exceed $60 billion a year. The national government considers the market enough of an indicator of the health of light manufacturing that it manages its own Yiwu Index, of average prices at the shops.

With some disorderly exceptions, floors are organized by type of merchandise. The warren-like corridors of one floor were devoted to hats. A second housed flags. A third floor featured costumes and masks, while another was devoted to toys.

Dai, the owner of the baseball cap factory in Qingdao, rents a stall on the hat floor. She said orders for Trump baseball caps had been consistently strong for two years. Biden cap orders were negligible until he became the expected Democratic nominee last spring, but only in recent weeks have these customers wanted to put down cash, she added. The recent orders arrived too late to make and deliver the hats before the election.

So the total for Trump cap orders so far this year: “There are tens of thousands this year,” Dai said. “Biden has a few thousand.”

Despite its accuracy in 2016, the Yiwu political index has its flaws. Often the buyers are not the campaigns themselves but proxies, like companies and other institutions that want to express their support for a candidate, or simply stores that want to sell popular merchandise.

The pandemic has interfered with normal marketing. China has barred practically all international visitors since the end of March, and it has required stringent, two-week quarantines for those who do enter. This has reduced overall activity compared with the 2016 presidential campaign, merchants said.

The pandemic has also produced different styles of campaigning. Trump has emphasized large gatherings, with supporters waving pennants and wearing various campaign merchandise, which increases demand for goods from Yiwu. Biden has avoided holding or encouraging mass gatherings in person and has relied more on online events.

As in 2016, Trump also appears to be gaining a considerable share of his support from people in rural areas, where people may have more room for yard signs and banners. Biden has done better in cities, where apartment dwellers have less room to wave flags.

Some vendors think Biden’s supporters may simply be taking business elsewhere. Zhang, the hat factory owner in Jiangsu province, said Biden supporters appeared to be placing more of their baseball cap orders in Vietnam and Myanmar.

With trade with the United States increasingly in doubt, a few Yiwu vendors said they were becoming less interested in the U.S. market. In the flag section, some appeared to be appealing instead to China’s rising nationalism. On the flag floor, the corridors were a scarlet sea of red national flags, red Chinese Communist Party pennants and other souvenirs.

Yet Trump paraphernalia is still in demand. At a Halloween mask factory outlet, rubbery Trump masks were consistently popular and completely sold out.

The factory created a Biden mask, said Gigi Zhang, the store manager, but nobody had ordered it yet.

In China, an election bellwether flashes for Trump

Saudi Arabia's King Salman bin Abdulaziz told US President Donald Trump on a phone call that the kingdom was eager to achieve a fair and permanent solution to the Palestinian issue after UAE.

As India's defence minister Rajnath Singh held talks with his Chinese counterpart in Moscow, US President Donald Trump said, "it has been very nasty situation and we stand ready to help with respect to China and India."

US happy to help in India-China dispute: Donald Trump

In the United States of America, it was a night like no other as the&nbsp;grand finale of the Republican National Convention was nothing short of a blockbuster.

The spectacle at the White House was unprecedented and unconventional. This four-day event was Trump's biggest opportunity to frame the presidential race on his terms and he may have exceeded the expectations of most people.

The Trump family put up a show that was made for television. It had emotions, fireworks, big promises, some acknowledgements, and in the words of Donald Trump himself, "a&nbsp;lot of greatness".

Big takeaways

First,&nbsp;Trump wanted a big party and he had it — pandemic or no pandemic. The President did not allow the coronavirus to deny him the crowd he craved for. The South Lawn of the White House was packed with over one thousand people. There were no masks or social distancing.&nbsp;America still remains the worst hit country, but the pandemic can wait.&nbsp;It's the land of the free afterall.

Second,&nbsp;Trump used the White House as the backdrop for an overtly political activity. Delivering a convention speech at the President's official address is unconventional, to put it mildly. The Democrats say he broke a few laws by doing so, but&nbsp;the President couldn't care less. He promised a show and he delivered it.

The show-stopper, except for Donald Trump, was his daughter,&nbsp;Ivanka Trump who&nbsp;got a starring role at this convention.

Much like she has throughout the Trump presidency,&nbsp;Ivanka introduced her father before his acceptance speech and she began by acknowledging that her father's style may not be to everyone's liking.&nbsp;"My father has a strong convictions. He knows what he believes and he says what he thinks. Whether you agree with him or not, you always know where he stands. I recognize that my dad's communication style is not to everyone's taste. And I know that his tweets can feel a bit unfiltered. But the results, the results speak for themselves."

Her statement of "the results speak for themselves"was a hint towards her father's apparent foreign policy victories.

In the United States of America, it was a night like no other as the grand finale of the Republican National Convention was nothing short of a blockbuster. The spectacle at the White House was unprecedented and unconventional. This four-day event was Trump's biggest opportunity to frame the presidential race on his terms and he may have exceeded the expectations of most people. The Trump family put up a show that was made for television. It had emotions, fireworks, big promises, some acknowledgements, and in the words of Donald Trump himself, "a lot of greatness". Big takeaways First, Trump wanted a big party and he had it — pandemic or no pandemic. The President did not allow the coronavirus to deny him the crowd he craved for. The South Lawn of the White House was packed with over one thousand people. There were no masks or social distancing. America still remains the worst hit country, but the pandemic can wait. It's the land of the free afterall. Delivering a convention speech at the President's official address is unconventional, to put it mildly. The Democrats say he broke a few laws by doing so, but the President couldn't care less. He promised a show and he delivered it. The show-stopper, except for Donald Trump, was his daughter, Ivanka Trump who got a starring role at this convention. Also read| Watch: Melania Trump's 'disdainful' look towards Ivanka during Republican National Convention goes viral Much like she has throughout the Trump presidency, Ivanka introduced her father before his acceptance speech and she began by acknowledging that her father's style may not be to everyone's liking. I recognize that my dad's communication style is not to everyone's taste. And I know that his tweets can feel a bit unfiltered. But the results, the results speak for themselves." Her statement of "the results speak for themselves"was a hint towards her father's apparent foreign policy victories. "I heard foreign leaders beg him not to move the American embassy to Jerusalem. Yet he delivered on a promise also made and unfulfilled by past presidents because my father knew that it was the right thing to do. US President Donald Trump said Tuesday that rapper Kanye West's declaration that he is running for president was "very interesting."

Responding to West's claim that he would run against Trump -- for whom the musician has expressed support in the past, Trump told reporters at the White House, "He may." &nbsp;

The declaration by West, 43, on Twitter that he was gunning for the highest office in the land was retweeted half a million times and 'liked' a million.

"If he did it, he would have to view this as a trial run for what's going to happen in four years," said Trump, noting that it may be too late for West to register in some states, and that he lacks the infrastructure for a presidential bid.

West, who visited Trump in the Oval Office in 2018 and donned a trademark 'Make America Great Again' red baseball cap, announced his proposed run on Saturday, as the country celebrated Independence Day.

"We must now realize the promise of America by trusting God, unifying our vision and building our future," the music and fashion mogul said.

"I am running for president of the United States," he said, with an icon of a US flag and the hashtag '2020Vision.' He has not provided any details about his alleged campaign.

Trump jokingly added, "Honestly, I think I look better in a mask."

He has also said that the US will not be going under a lockdown if there is a second peak in the number of positive cases, and has urged the states to loosen the lockdown restrictions and let the economy rise again.

During US President Donald Trump's visit to India on February 24 and 25, both countries signed three agreements in health and oil sectors.

In a noteworthy gesture, the health departments of both countries sealed a pact&nbsp;to deal with mental health challenges through innovative measures.

The agreement will enable India to learn from the experience of the US in treating mental health issues. It will also facilitate greater access to traditional Indian medicines and therapies to treat mental health challenges in America.

World Health Organisation (WHO) has estimated that more than 300 million people suffer from depression across the world. It has further stated that there is one death by suicide every 40 seconds and each year more than 800,000 people end their own lives.&nbsp;

Furthermore, the National Mental Health Survey, 2016, conducted across 12 Indian states, has stated that 150 million persons are in need of mental health interventions and care.

According to a report, the US suicide rate increased on average by about 1 per cent a year from 2000 through 2006 and by 2 per cent a year from 2006 through 2016.

It's heartening to see that governments, people and organisations across the globe have acknowledged the challenges related to&nbsp;mental health. In 2018, the UK government had appointed Loneliness Minister for cross-government work on loneliness.

Moreover, fund allocations also have to be increased. Funds allocated to the National Mental Health Programme were not increased in the Union Budget for FY 2020. It was brought down to Rs 40 crore from Rs 50 crore in FY2018.&nbsp;

Also, more trained psychiatrists and psychologists should be made available at government health care centres to meet WHO prescribed norms so that people can avail mental health treatment at a cheaper cost.

Mental illness, like any other disease, does not discriminate. It affects all age groups, children, youth, elderly people. To tackle depression, loneliness and anxiety, it's important to deal with the illness at home, offices, schools and colleges.

Other countries should also learn from this collaboration between the world's two largest democracies to deal with mental health challenges, and come together to tackle mental illness.

Governments must, through there policies including programmes, educate people and organisations about the effects of mental health problems. Globally, we need to increase our efforts to tackle mental health problems.

During US President Donald Trump's visit to India on February 24 and 25, both countries signed three agreements in health and oil sectors. In a noteworthy gesture, the health departments of both countries sealed a pact to deal with mental health challenges through innovative measures. The agreement will enable India to learn from the experience of the US in treating mental health issues. It will also facilitate greater access to traditional Indian medicines and therapies to treat mental health challenges in America. World Health Organisation (WHO) has estimated that more than 300 million people suffer from depression across the world. It has further stated that there is one death by suicide every 40 seconds and each year more than 800,000 people end their own lives. It's heartening to see that governments, people and organisations across the globe have acknowledged the challenges related to mental health. In 2018, the UK government had appointed Loneliness Minister for cross-government work on loneliness. Moreover, fund allocations also have to be increased. Funds allocated to the National Mental Health Programme were not increased in the Union Budget for FY 2020. It was brought down to Rs 40 crore from Rs 50 crore in FY2018. US President Donald Trump's two-day India visit

US President Donald Trump’s brief, but substantive, visit to India heralds a renewed US-India partnership designed to address the challenges of the 21st century.

It is difficult to overstate the importance of this <a href="https://www.wionews.com/opinions-blogs/wion-edit-indo-us-ties-can-play-a-definitive-role-in-redefining-world-order-282852">partnership</a>, one that has the potential of having a profound impact on the geopolitical dynamics.

Agreements in principle were reached between India and the United States in the areas of defence and security, trade and energy.

However important the others, defence and security will be the foundation of this renewed partnership.

The strategic conditions in the Indian Ocean region are rapidly changing. We see the emergence of China as an economic predator. We know China wants to expand militarily into the Indian Ocean. Pakistan continues to use terrorism as an instrument of its foreign policy. The withdrawal of American forces from Afghanistan could create a strategic vacuum.

An India-US partnership has the capability of addressing all those issues and help to ensure peace and prosperity in the Indian- Ocean region.

As was <a href="https://www.wionews.com/opinions-blogs/diaspora-dynamics-in-howdy-modi-to-namaste-trump-282679">the “Howdy Modi” event</a> in Houston last year, the pomp and pageantry of President Trump’s visit to India was an essential component of the optics of diplomacy. India and the United States are democracies and need to rally their citizens in support of the renewed partnership.

The next major milestone will be a trade agreement.

Bilateral trade between India and the United States more than doubled in value between 2008 and 2018. It is, therefore, no surprise with such a rapid increase in the volume of trade that areas of contention would arise.

Specifically, the removal of the Generalised System of Preferences (GSP) for India, and India’s reciprocal tariffs prompting the Trump Administration to impose new steel and aluminium tariffs on India, all of which has created obstacles to a comprehensive trade agreement at this time.

It is important to note, however, that the GSP program was designed for developing country and India can no longer be considered as a member of that category, but as a rising global economic power.

President Trump, long a supporter of fair trade, sees India as an equal trading partner and seeks an arrangement that is both balanced and mutually beneficial.

There is a general consensus among Indian and US officials that all outstanding trade issues will be resolved and a major trade agreement will be signed within a year.

The $3 billion military helicopter deal signed during the President’s visit was the leading edge of greater trade between India and the US, as well as, a complement to increase defence cooperation.

It is no accident that the United States renamed its Pacific military command to the Indo-Pacific Command emphasising the importance of the Indian Ocean region and India as its pivotal nation.

The national interests of India and the United States are converging.

Last November, the US and India completed their most expansive joint military exercises in history amid efforts to coordinate more effectively concerning the defence and security challenges in the Indo-Pacific region.

Such coordination is entirely consistent with Prime Minister Modi’s SAGAR initiative for Security and Growth for All in the Region:

“(i) preserving freedom of navigation for commercial shipping, (ii) sustainably and equitably harnessing the Indian Ocean’s natural resources, (iii) establishing protocols for enhancing disaster prevention and relief as well as search and rescue operations, (iv) countering piracy, terrorism, smuggling, and illegal weapons proliferation, and (v) managing international naval competition.”

We now have two of the foremost democracies in the world working together for peace and prosperity and against authoritarianism and terrorism.

We could look back on this moment as being a watershed event in history.

A new era of India-US relations has begun

India witnessed an unprecedented welcome for a foreign head of state, it was the biggest crowd that US President Donald Trump has ever addressed.

India left no stone unturned to throw a grand reception for the American President. It's a visit that will be remembered for the pictures and the bonhomie between <a href="https://www.wionews.com/opinions-blogs/heres-why-indians-love-us-president-donald-trump-282632">President Donald Trump</a> and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

This visit certainly overshadows all previous State visits by American Presidents. Trump used this opportunity to cement his relationship with Prime Minister by the end of his trip.&nbsp;

The status of this relationship has now been elevated - India and America now call their relationship 'a comprehensive global partnership'. This is a significant move - experts see this as a vow by both parties to prioritise their partnership over other partners.

The conversations between America and India will now be closely watched, both sides are expanding their defence alliance. There is broad support over the issue of terrorism.

America has endorsed India positions on issues like Kashmir and the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). There is renewed momentum to settle trade differences - both sides are now considering a major agreement that could be signed before the end of this agreement.

President Trump would prefer that the deal comes through before the Presidential elections in November. Both sides are sending the right signals, its time for India to now push for tangible gains.

There are several outstanding issues on the list. The major one is Visas &nbsp;- a report claims that the number of Indians on the waitlist for a US Greencard rose by 35 times.

New Delhi would also expect a more aggressive push from Washington against Pakistani terror groups.

America has supported India's bid for a permanent seat at the UN Security Council, a renewed diplomatic campaign for United Nations reforms is long overdue.&nbsp;

The fact that Trump took out time for a visit to India in an election year is a victory for New Delhi.

It's becoming increasingly clear that the Indo-American alliance can play a definitive role in redefining the world order in the 21st century.

Irrespective of who wields power in the White House in the coming years &nbsp;- America and China will have an uneasy relationship. In fact, more clashes between both sides can be expected in the future.

Such circumstances will lead to a greater role for India in the region. It is likely that American businesses would look at India to protect their investments.

Washington will depend on New Delhi for a security partnership to protect its interests in the Indo-Pacific region. Trump's visit has heightened expectations from the Indo-American alliance. The world now expects more from India and the United States in the coming months.
