Senior US officials including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, and Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff, are travelling to Saudi Arabia to start negotiations aimed at ending the war between Russia and Ukraine, two sources told NBC News channel. The talks, it appears, will not have a presence from Ukraine.
Witkoff confirmed that he will travel to Saudi Arabia Sunday night (Feb 16), where the first face-to-face talks between the US and Russia on Ukraine are set to be held.

Witkoff added that US officials are also speaking separately with Ukrainian officials, insisting that "Ukraine is part of the talks".
But he gave no indication he expected officials from Kyiv to be in Saudi Arabia.
A BBC report meanwhile said&nbsp;Kyiv will not be attending, despite President Donald Trump saying this week that Ukrainian representatives would participate.
Witcoff added he would be having meetings "at the direction" of Trump and he hopes for "good progress."
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov meanwhile told reporters, "This is a powerful signal that we will now try to solve problems through dialogue."

<h2>Ukraine&rsquo;s concerns over exclusion from talks</h2>
The possibility of talks taking place without Ukraine&rsquo;s direct involvement is likely to spark criticism from Kyiv. On Thursday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky responded to the Trump-Putin call, insisting that his country must be included in any discussions about its future.
"Ukraine will never accept deals made behind our backs," Zelensky said during a speech at the Munich Security Conference. "No decisions about Ukraine without Ukraine, no decisions about Europe without Europe."

<h2>US-Russia diplomacy resumes</h2>
As part of the Trump administration&rsquo;s efforts to restart diplomatic engagement with Russia, Rubio spoke with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Saturday while travelling from Munich to Israel.

The Russian summary of the call stated that both diplomats would maintain regular communication and begin preparations for a future summit between their presidents. It also indicated that discussions would cover broader international issues, including Ukraine, the Middle East and Palestine.
Rubio is set to visit Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates following his stop in Israel&mdash;his first diplomatic trip to the Middle East.
<h2>Uncertainty over European involvement</h2>
During a panel discussion at the Munich Security Conference, US Special Envoy to Ukraine Keith Kellogg confirmed that Ukrainian representatives would take part in discussions to end the war. However, when asked if European nations would also have a seat at the table, he said, &ldquo;The answer is no.&rdquo;
Kellogg explained that negotiations would primarily involve &ldquo;two protagonists&rdquo; Russia and Ukraine, while the US would act as an intermediary. When pressed for clarification, he confirmed that Americans would also be at the table.
He later added that not being present in direct talks does not mean a country&rsquo;s interests are being ignored.
Defending the need for discussions with Putin, Kellogg said, &ldquo;Whether you like it or not, you have to talk to adversaries.&rdquo;
He also referenced former US defence secretary James Mattis in his answer.

Trump’s team heads to Saudi Arabia for Ukraine peace talks with Russia, without Ukraine

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem on Sunday (Feb 16) to discuss the ongoing Gaza ceasefire and regional security concerns.
This marked the first stop of Rubio&rsquo;s Middle East tour, which came just a day after the latest hostage-prisoner exchange between Israel and Hamas.
<h2>'Greatest friend Israel has ever had in the White House'</h2>
At the start of their joint press briefing, Netanyahu praised former US President Donald Trump, calling him &ldquo;the greatest friend Israel has ever had in the White House.&rdquo; He also described his meeting with Rubio as &ldquo;very productive&rdquo; and added that no issue was more pressing than Iran.

<h2>Iran and regional security</h2>
Netanyahu repeated Israel's commitment to preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, stating, &ldquo;Israel and America stand shoulder to shoulder in countering the threat of Iran. We agree that the Ayatollahs must not be allowed to have nuclear weapons. We also agreed that Iran&rsquo;s aggression in the region has to be rolled back.&rdquo;
With Trump&rsquo;s backing, he added, &ldquo;We can and will finish the job.&rdquo;
Rubio also described Iran as &ldquo;the single greatest source of instability in the region.&rdquo;&nbsp;

"There can never be a nuclear Iran, a nuclear Iran that could then hold itself immune from pressure and from action. That can never happen," he added.
<h2>Gaza and Trump's proposal</h2>
The two leaders also discussed Trump&rsquo;s controversial proposal for Gaza, which hopes to transform the territory into the &ldquo;Riviera of the Middle East.&rdquo;
Netanyahu said he was committed to &ldquo;ensuring that vision becomes a reality.&rdquo; However, the plan, which involves relocating Gaza&rsquo;s two million residents, has been widely condemned by foreign leaders.

The US has said it is open to alternative proposals from Arab governments but insists that, at present, &ldquo;the only plan is Trump's.&rdquo;
<h2>US top diplomat on Hamas and ceasefire</h2>
Speaking about the ongoing conflict, Rubio insisted that Hamas &ldquo;must be eliminated,&rdquo; adding, &ldquo;Hamas cannot continue as a military or a government force... they must be eliminated.&rdquo;
His visit followed a hostage-prisoner exchange in which Hamas released three Israeli hostages in exchange for 369 Palestinian prisoners. This marked the sixth swap under the fragile ceasefire.
Negotiations for the next phase of the ceasefire, aimed at securing a more lasting resolution, are expected to begin next week in Doha. Talks will focus on the release of remaining hostages and discussions on ending the war.

‘There can never be nuclear Iran’: Netanyahu, Rubio discuss Hamas, Trump’s Gaza plan, and Tehran’s ‘aggression’

Saudi Arabia is hoping to mediate between the Trump administration and Iran to work towards a new agreement that would curb Tehran&rsquo;s nuclear ambitions, according to a CNN report.
The report states that Saudi officials are worried Iran may now be more likely to develop nuclear weapons. This concern comes as Iran&rsquo;s regional allies, which once acted as a deterrent against Israeli attacks, have weakened.

Although US President <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/donald-trump" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Donald Trump</a> has shown his desire to negotiate a new deal, Iran&rsquo;s stance has been inconsistent. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei recently said that negotiations with the United States were &ldquo;not smart."
<h2>Saudi-Iran ties</h2>
In the past, Saudi Arabia supported the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and major world powers but later backed Trump&rsquo;s decision to withdraw from it in 2018.
A year after the US pullout, a major drone and missile attack hit Saudi Arabia&rsquo;s oil facilities, temporarily cutting production in half. Yemen&rsquo;s Iran-backed Houthi rebels claimed responsibility, but the US blamed Iran. However, despite this, the US did not take military action in defence of Saudi Arabia.
Relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran have improved significantly since then. In March 2023, the two countries agreed to restore diplomatic ties in a deal brokered by China.

According to the CNN report, Saudi officials fear that if Iran feels isolated, it may be more likely to develop nuclear weapons. Officials in Riyadh see a new agreement as a way to prevent this.
<h2>Trump's repeated calls for a new deal with Iran</h2>
Since returning to office, Trump has repeatedly called for a new deal with Iran. Last week, he posted on Truth Social, &ldquo;I want Iran to be a great and successful Country, but one that cannot have a Nuclear Weapon. Reports that the United States, working in conjunction with Israel, is going to blow Iran into smithereens are GREATLY EXAGGERATED."

He added, &ldquo;I would much prefer a Verified Nuclear Peace Agreement, which will allow Iran to grow peacefully and prosper. We should start working on it immediately and celebrate in the Middle East when it is signed. God Bless the Middle East!&rdquo;
However, not everyone in Iran is convinced by Trump&rsquo;s statements. On Monday, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian questioned whether he was truly committed to a new nuclear deal. Meanwhile, Supreme Leader Khamenei has remained sceptical, saying last week that talks with the US are &ldquo;not smart, wise, or honourable&rdquo; due to its withdrawal from the 2015 agreement. However, he did not completely rule out future discussions with Washington.

Saudi Arabia fears Iran may go nuclear, seeks to broker new Trump-Tehran deal: Report

New York City Mayor Eric Adams has dismissed allegations that he attempted to strike a deal with the Trump administration to have corruption charges against him dropped in return for supporting the president&rsquo;s immigration policies.
Speaking on Fox News alongside Trump&rsquo;s border czar Tom Homan on Friday, Adams described the claims as "silly" and insisted he had committed no crime.
Adams said that Sassoon&nbsp;was accusing him of a serious crime. "It took her three weeks to report ... a criminal action? Come on, this is silly," he said.

His comments came a day after Manhattan&rsquo;s top federal prosecutor, Danielle Sassoon, stepped down, alleging that the Justice Department had pressured her to abandon the case against Adams.
<h2>What are the charges against Eric Adams?</h2>
Adams was indicted last year over claims that he accepted gifts worth more than $100,000 (&pound;75,000) from Turkish nationals in exchange for political favours. He has denied any wrongdoing.
<h2>Quid pro quo</h2>
In a letter, Sassoon, recently promoted by President Donald Trump, said that Adams' legal team had met with officials at the Justice Department and had "repeatedly urged what amounted to a quid pro quo, indicating that Adams would be in a position to assist with the Department&rsquo;s enforcement priorities only if the indictment were dismissed."
The mayor recently announced his intention to sign an executive order allowing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents access to Rikers Island, fulfilling a significant request from the Trump administration regarding immigration enforcement.

On Monday, Trump&rsquo;s acting deputy attorney general, Emil Bove, instructed Sassoon and New York prosecutors to withdraw the case, arguing that it was hindering Adams' ability to tackle "illegal immigration and violent crime."
In her resignation letter to Bove on Thursday, Sassoon warned that dismissing the charges against Adams would create a "breathtaking and dangerous precedent."
"Because the law does not support a dismissal, and because I am confident that Adams has committed the crimes with which he is charged, I cannot agree to seek a dismissal driven by improper considerations," she wrote.
Following Sassoon&rsquo;s resignation, five other Justice Department officials from the corruption unit also stepped down.
<h2>Donald Trump and Eric Adams' close ties</h2>
Since Trump&rsquo;s victory in the presidential election, Adams, a Democrat, has developed closer ties with the Republican leader. He travelled to Trump&rsquo;s Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida just days before the president took office. Trump has denied any involvement in efforts to have the case against Adams dismissed.
<h2>Growing calls for resignation</h2>
New York Governor Kathy Hochul voiced concern over the allegations, describing them as "extremely serious and concerning" during an interview with MSNBC on Thursday night.
When asked whether she would consider removing Adams from his position, she stated that she was "consulting with other leaders in government at this time."
Calls for Adams to step down grew louder on Friday, as further details about the Justice Department&rsquo;s decision to drop the corruption charges came to light.

NYC Mayor Eric Adams denies 'quid pro quo' with Trump administration to drop criminal case

Saudi Arabia is set to host a summit on 20 February, bringing together leaders from Egypt, Jordan, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates to discuss a response to Donald Trump&rsquo;s controversial proposal for the future of Gaza, according to AFP.
This comes ahead of an Arab League meeting in Cairo on 27 February, which will address the same issue. A separate source, speaking to AFP on condition of anonymity, said that Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas is also expected to attend.

<h2>Race to present an alternative to Trump's Gaza plan</h2>
Saudi Arabia is taking the lead in efforts to formulate an alternative plan for Gaza to counter Trump&rsquo;s vision, which reportedly aims to transform the area into a tourist hub while removing its Palestinian residents. According to sources cited by Reuters, discussions will centre on a Gulf-backed reconstruction initiative and potential measures to diminish Hamas&rsquo;s influence in Gaza.
Saudi Arabia and other Arab Nations were taken aback by Trump&rsquo;s proposal, which allegedly involves relocating many Palestinians to Jordan and Egypt, an idea widely dismissed by them.

An Arab government source told Reuters that at least four alternative proposals have been developed, with an Egyptian-led initiative gaining traction. Details shared by Egyptian security sources suggest an advanced reconstruction plan, including a buffer zone and a physical barrier to prevent the construction of tunnels between Gaza and Egypt, as per the Reuters report.
Once debris is cleared, 20 temporary residential zones will be established, with around 50 Egyptian and international companies involved in the rebuilding efforts. Funding is expected to come from international and Gulf sources. There are even suggestions that the fund could be named the Trump Fund for Reconstruction, an Arab government official said.

The latest Egyptian proposal outlines the creation of a national Palestinian committee to manage Gaza, excluding Hamas. It also calls for international participation in reconstruction while ensuring Palestinians are not displaced. Additionally, the plan advocates progress towards a two-state solution.
Commenting on the upcoming Arab discussions, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated on Thursday, &ldquo;Right now the only plan &ndash; they don&rsquo;t like it &ndash; but the only plan is the Trump plan. So if they&rsquo;ve got a better plan, now&rsquo;s the time to present it.&rdquo;

Also read: 'You can survive few months of Elon Musk': US VP JD Vance defends X boss amid election interference claims An Arab government source told Reuters that at least four alternative proposals have been developed, with an Egyptian-led initiative gaining traction. It also calls for international participation in reconstruction while ensuring Palestinians are not displaced. Additionally, the plan advocates progress towards a two-state solution. Commenting on the upcoming Arab discussions, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated on Thursday, “Right now the only plan – they don’t like it – but the only plan is the Trump plan. So if they’ve got a better plan, now’s the time to present it.” (With inputs from agencies)

'Buffer zone, physical barrier, 'Trump Fund': Inside the Arab nations' alternative to Trump's Gaza plan

A federal judge has ordered a temporary lift on a freeze on funding to US aid and development programs ordered by President Donald Trump's administration, court documents seen by AFP on Friday showed.
Judge Amir Ali, who was appointed by Joe Biden in November, prohibited the Trump administration from "suspending, pausing, or otherwise preventing" foreign assistance funds, according to Thursday's ruling.
The Trump administration has frozen foreign aid funding, ordered thousands of internationally based staff to return to the United States and begun slashing the US Agency for International Development (USAID) headcount of 10,000 employees to around only 300.

This has put the work of USAID in some of the world's poorest countries in doubt. The agency has an annual budget of $42.8 billion, representing 42 percent of humanitarian aid disbursed worldwide.&nbsp;
The new court order also stops the government from "issuing, implementing, enforcing, or otherwise giving effect to terminations, suspensions, or stop-work orders" in relation to existing contracts as of January 19, 2025.
The ruling said that the "stated purpose in implementing the suspension of all foreign aid is to provide the opportunity to review programs for their efficiency and consistency with priorities."
"However, at least to date, Defendants have not offered any explanation for why a blanket suspension of all congressionally appropriated foreign aid, which set off a shockwave and upended reliance interests for thousands of agreements with businesses, nonprofits, and organizations around the country, was a rational precursor to reviewing programs," it said.

The plaintiffs in the case are or represent groups of small and large businesses and health and journalistic nonprofits that receive federal grant money to perform foreign assistance work.
The plaintiffs "have moved for a temporary restraining order, with evidence detailing the devastating effects on American businesses and nonprofits, which have been forced to shut down programs, to furlough or lay off employees, and in some instances to shutter altogether as a result of the challenged action."
'Woodchipper'
Trump, who began his second term last month, has launched a campaign led by his top donor Elon Musk, the world's richest man, to downsize or dismantle swaths of the US government.
The most concentrated fire has been on USAID, the primary organization for distributing US humanitarian aid around the world with health and emergency programs in around 120 countries.
Trump has said USAID was "run by radical lunatics" and Musk has described it as a "criminal organisation" needing to be put "through the woodchipper."
Newly confirmed Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said that USAID, founded by his uncle, slain president John F. Kennedy, has become a "sinister propagator of totalitarianism."&nbsp;
Trump fired the independent inspector general for USAID this week, US media outlets reported.
Paul Martin's dismissal came a day after his office issued a report critical of the Trump administration's efforts to dismantle the agency, the Washington Post, CNN and others reported.

‘I’d love to help,’ says Trump on India-China border dispute; New Delhi responds

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on his way to Washington for a crucial meeting with US President Donald Trump. This will be their first official encounter since Trump began his second term in office.
Modi&rsquo;s two-day visit comes at a tense moment, following Trump&rsquo;s recent decision to impose a 25% tariff on global steel and aluminum imports. Calling these tariffs &ldquo;the first of many,&rdquo; the president has hinted at further duties on vehicles, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and other products.

The new metal tariffs have raised concerns in India&rsquo;s steel and aluminum industries, which export goods worth billions of dollars to the US annually. On Tuesday, the Indian Steel Association warned that exports could drop by as much as 85% due to these new measures.
<h2>A test for Modi-Trump relations</h2>
The upcoming meeting will be a key moment for Modi and Trump as they navigate trade tensions. Trump has previously praised Modi as &ldquo;the nicest human being,&rdquo; while the Indian leader has referred to Trump as his &ldquo;dear friend&rdquo;.
Despite Trump&rsquo;s history of imposing tariffs on allies, India has so far avoided direct confrontation over trade disputes. However, with the recent tariffs, that could change.

<h2>What to expect from the talks</h2>
India&rsquo;s Foreign Secretary, Vikram Misri, highlighted the significance of this meeting, stating that Modi&rsquo;s invitation to Washington &ldquo;within barely three weeks of the new administration taking office&rdquo; underscores the importance of US-India relations.
In a move to ease trade friction, India recently reduced duties on a range of products, including high-end motorcycles like Harley-Davidsons. Further tariff cuts on US exports, such as electronics, medical equipment, chemicals, dish antennae, and wood pulp, are also being considered.

Trade between the two countries has been steadily growing, surpassing $118 billion (&pound;95 billion) last financial year, with India running a $32 billion trade surplus. While Trump has called for a &ldquo;fairer&rdquo; relationship, India has indicated a willingness to discuss a limited trade deal to address US concerns over market access.
<h2>Immigration and deportation issues</h2>
Another pressing issue on the agenda is immigration. Trump has been cracking down on illegal migration and claims that Modi has assured him India &ldquo;will do what&rsquo;s right&rdquo; in response.
Last week, the US deported 104 Indian migrants, with many more expected to be returned. Images of deportees in shackles on a 42-hour military flight have caused public outrage in India. Discussions are likely to focus on managing the repatriation of hundreds more Indian nationals facing deportation.

India also hopes to move past legal disputes stemming from US accusations of an alleged Indian government plot to assassinate an American citizen on US soil.
<h2>Defence cooperation and military deals</h2>
A potential area of cooperation where both leaders could claim success is defence. India is the world&rsquo;s largest importer of military arms, accounting for nearly 10% of global imports, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute.
For decades, India has relied on affordable and dependable Russian defence equipment. High costs and political barriers kept American weapons out of reach. However, with changing dynamics, defence cooperation between India and the US could see significant progress during this visit.

Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell voted against confirming Tulsi Gabbard for director of national intelligence. He had also voted against Pete Hegseth&rsquo;s confirmation for secretary of the Department of Defense last month.
In a last-minute plea, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said, &ldquo;I plead with my colleagues, I know it&rsquo;s the last minute, to think twice, to vote no, as we all will vote, because this is such an awful nomination who will endanger our national security and our intelligence operations throughout the country and the world.&rdquo;

In a last-minute plea, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said, “I plead with my colleagues, I know it’s the last minute, to think twice, to vote no, as we all will vote, because this is such an awful nomination who will endanger our national security and our intelligence operations throughout the country and the world.” Also read: 'Not Putin’s or Modi’s puppet’: Trump's US top spy pick Tulsi Gabbard defends loyalty at confirmation hearing Gabbard faced intense grilling from both Republican and Democratic senators during her confirmation hearing last month. She was particularly critical of previous intelligence officials, accusing former CIA and Director of National Intelligence leaders of “weaponisation and politicisation of the intelligence community.” During her confirmation hearing, Gabbard thanked Trump, saying that she was “honoured and grateful” to be chosen for the role, especially “at a time when trust in the intelligence community, unfortunately, is at an all-time low.” Also read: PM Modi US visit: Indian premier to meet ‘dear friend’ Trump amid tariff threats and mass deportations During the hearing, she addressed criticisms levelled against her, saying, “These attacks accuse me of being Trump’s puppet, Putin’s puppet, Assad’s puppet, a guru’s puppet, Modi’s puppet, not recognising the absurdity of simultaneously being the puppet of five different puppet masters.” She further added, “The fact is, what truly unsettles my political opponents is I refuse to be their puppet. Hamas said on Wednesday (Feb 12) that it will not accept threats from the US and Israel over the ongoing ceasefire agreement in Gaza.
"Our position is clear, and we will not accept the language of American and Israeli threats. Israel must commit to implementing the terms of the ceasefire agreement for the release of the hostages," Hamas spokesman Hazem Qassem said in a statement.

The Palestinian militant group's statement comes after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday said that his country would terminate the ceasefire agreement if Hamas failed to comply with the Saturday deadline for the next hostage-prisoner exchange.
Netanyahu added that Israel will resume &ldquo;intense fighting&rdquo; in Gaza if the Palestinian militant group doesn&rsquo;t release hostages by midday Saturday.
"The decision that I passed unanimously in the cabinet is this: If Hamas does not return our hostages by Saturday noon - the ceasefire will be terminated, and the IDF will return to intense fighting until Hamas is finally defeated," he said.
US President Donald Trump also issued a similar ultimatum on Monday, warning that "all hell" will break loose unless all hostages held in Gaza are released by Saturday.
However, later on Tuesday, Trump said that he did not expect Hamas to meet a Saturday deadline to release more hostages.

‘Won’t accept American and Israeli threats’: Hamas warns Trump, Netanyahu over Gaza ceasefire ultimatum

Jordan&rsquo;s King Abdullah II met with US President Donald Trump at the White House in Washington on Tuesday (Feb 11), to discuss the situation in Gaza.
&ldquo;One of the things we can do right away&rdquo; is bring 2,000 children who are in a &ldquo;very ill state&rdquo; to Jordan as quickly as possible, King Abdullah said.
In response to the offer, Trump said: "That&rsquo;s a really beautiful gesture."

&ldquo;The president is looking at Egypt coming to present their plan, we will be in Saudi Arabia to disucss how we can work with the president and with the United States,&rdquo; the King said.
&ldquo;So I think let&rsquo;s wait until the Egyptians can come and present it to the president and not get ahead of ourselves,&rdquo; he added.
Asked about taking in Palestinians, Jordan&rsquo;s King Abdullah said, "We have to keep in mind how do we make this work that is in everyone&rsquo;s best interest."
Jordan King also added that he has to do what is best for his country when he was asked whether there is a parcel of land where Palestinians can live in Jordan.

<h2>Trump's Gaza plan</h2>
His comments came as Trump pushed his suggestion of relocating all Palestinians from the Gaza Strip to neighbouring Jordan and Egypt, to transform Gaza into a luxury destination. The US president had proposed turning the territory into a high-end "Riviera."
Revealing more about his plan, the US president said that he would not personally develop property in Gaza. "Palestinians will live safely in another location that is not Gaza. We will run Gaza very properly, we&rsquo;re not going to buy it," Trump said.

Prior to his discussion with Trump, King Abdullah had met with some of the president&rsquo;s advisers, including National Security Advisor Mike Waltz.
The visit comes at a critical time for the fragile ceasefire in Gaza. Hamas has accused Israel of breaking the truce and announced it will suspend further hostage releases. Meanwhile, Trump has told Israel to resume its military operations if all captives are not freed by the weekend.
Trump has put forward a plan for the US to take control of Gaza and develop it as "the Riviera of the Middle East." His proposal involves relocating Palestinians to neighbouring countries, without offering them the right to return.

On Monday, he indicated that he might cut US financial aid to Jordan and Egypt&mdash;both key American allies and major recipients of US assistance&mdash;if they refused to accept more displaced Palestinians from Gaza.
&ldquo;Yeah, maybe. Sure, why not?&rdquo; Trump said when asked about the possibility of withholding aid. &ldquo;If they don&rsquo;t, I would conceivably withhold aid, yes.&rdquo;
Jordan, which already hosts more than two million Palestinians, has firmly rejected Trump&rsquo;s relocation plan, as have other Arab nations.

A federal judge has ruled that the White House failed to comply with his directive to release billions in federal grants, marking the first time a judge has explicitly said that the Trump administration has disregarded a court order.
Judge John J. McConnell Jr, presiding in a Rhode Island federal court, asked officials to follow what he described as "the plain text" of his ruling from Jan 29. He added that the order was "clear and unambiguous, and there are no impediments to the Defendants&rsquo; compliance."

Following Monday&rsquo;s decision, Trump administration lawyers quickly appealed the judge&rsquo;s ruling to the US Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, seeking a temporary hold on Judge McConnell&rsquo;s order while the case proceeded.
&ldquo;Each executive order will hold up in court because every action of the Trump-Vance administration is completely lawful. Any legal challenge against it is nothing more than an attempt to undermine the will of the American people,&rdquo; said White House spokesman Harrison Fields.

More than 40 lawsuits have already been filed challenging Trump&rsquo;s actions, which include revoking birthright citizenship and granting Musk&rsquo;s teams access to classified Treasury Department payment systems. Previously, Judge McConnell had ordered the White House to release federal funds that had been withheld by the budget office. A memo from the office stipulated that the grants should be suspended until they were assessed for alignment with President Trump&rsquo;s policy agenda.
The judge refrained from holding the Trump administration in contempt or imposing any specific penalties for noncompliance. However, he made it clear that his previous temporary restraining order from January 29 had not been followed.

&ldquo;These pauses in funding violate the plain text of the TRO,&rdquo; Judge McConnell said. The judge further added that White House officials were required to comply with the directive, regardless of their expectations about the case&rsquo;s outcome.

An official told Reuters that Modi’s early visit was intended to prevent a "trade war-like situation that is happening between the United States and China." US President Donald Trump in an interview excerpt released on Monday (Feb 10) said that Palestinians would not have the right to return to Gaza under his proposal for the United States to assume control of the region.
"No, they wouldn&rsquo;t, because they&rsquo;re going to have much better housing. In other words, I&rsquo;m talking about building a permanent place for them," Trump told Bret Baier of Fox News when asked if Palestinians would be allowed to return.

Previously, while speaking aboard Air Force One on Sunday, Trump reaffirmed his commitment to having the US acquire Gaza once its Palestinians had either left or been removed. He suggested that reconstruction efforts could be led by other nations in the region.
"I&rsquo;m committed to buying and owning Gaza. As far as us rebuilding it, we may give it to other states in the Middle East to build sections of it. Other people may do it through our auspices. But we&rsquo;re committed to owning it, taking it, and making sure that Hamas doesn&rsquo;t move back. There&rsquo;s nothing to move back into. The place is a demolition site. The remainder will be demolished," he told reporters.
<h2>What is Trump's Gaza plan?</h2>
Last week, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/donald-trump" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Trump</a> detailed his plan, which involved the US taking control of Gaza, relocating its Palestinian population elsewhere, and transforming the region into the "Riviera of the Middle East." He introduced the plan alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who said that the idea was "worth listening carefully to."
The proposal has been widely criticised by both Western and Arab allies. The United Nations Chief described it as 'ethnic cleansing' of Gaza.

Hamas reacted to the plan by stating that the US President's plan "will only put oil in the fire." The Palestinian militant group added, "Our Palestinian people... will not allow any state in the world to occupy our land or impose guardianship on our great Palestinian people who have offered rivers of blood to liberate our land from occupation and to establish our state with Jerusalem as its capital."
Saudi Arabia&rsquo;s foreign ministry also rejected any attempts to displace Palestinians from their land.

‘Committed to buying, owning Gaza’: Trump says Palestinians have no right to return under Gaza ‘takeover’ plan

Elon Musk claimed on Monday (Feb 10) that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) allocated $59 million last week to luxury hotels in New York City to accommodate illegal migrants.
In an early morning post on X, US President <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/donald-trump" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Donald Trump's</a> aide said that the emergency funds had been "just discovered" by his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). This came after Trump met with survivors of Hurricane Helene, many of whom remain homeless four months after the disaster. "If I had an understanding that America and Europe will not abandon us and they will support us and provide security guarantees, I would be ready for any format for talks," he said.
These comments came as Trump suggested he had been in discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin and that progress was being made towards ending the war.

‘Give security guarantees’: Zelensky ready to talk if US, Europe assure they ‘won’t abandon’ Ukraine

US President&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/donald-trump" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Donald Trump</a> voiced his growing frustration with the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas on Sunday (Feb 9) after seeing the latest hostage handover by Hamas over the weekend.
"They look like Holocaust survivors. They were in horrible condition. They were emaciated," Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One while en route to New Orleans for the Super Bowl.

He warned that patience was running thin, saying, "I don't know how much longer we can take that ... at some point we're going to lose our patience."
Referring to the slow release of Israeli hostages, Trump added, "I know we have a deal ... they dribble in and keep dribbling in ... but they are in really bad shape."
Among those freed on Saturday were Ohad Ben Ami and Eli Sharabi, who had been abducted from Kibbutz Be'eri during Hamas' attack on southern Israel on 7 October 2023, along with Or Levy, who was taken from the Nova music festival that same day.
The three men were led onto a Hamas podium by gunmen before being transferred to the Red Cross officials.

The condition of these hostages appeared notably worse than the 18 others previously released under the truce. Many Palestinian prisoners freed by Israel have also looked malnourished and frail.
Michal Cohen, mother-in-law of released hostage Ohad Ben Ami, speaking to Channel 13 News, said, "He looked like a skeleton, it was awful to see."
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the visuals and said, "We will not go into the agenda about the shocking sights we saw today. The shocking images we saw today will not pass without response."
Trump's comments following the release of the three visibly gaunt hostages have cast further doubt over the fate of the ceasefire agreement.

"He's not gaining anything," Trump said in the interview, scheduled to air at 15:00 EST (20:00 GMT). He further mentioned that he would direct Musk to vet the Department of Education "soon" before moving on to doing "the same thing" with the US military.
"We're going to find billions, hundreds of billions of dollars of fraud and abuse. And, you know, the people elected me on that," Trump asserted in excerpts released by Fox News.

'He'll expose billions of dollars of fraud': Trump defends 'terrific' Elon Musk’s government overhaul

Donald Trump is set to attend the Super Bowl in New Orleans this Sunday, becoming the first sitting US president to do so, despite his history of tensions with the National Football League (NFL).
<h2>Kansas City Chiefs vs Philadelphia Eagles</h2>
<a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/donald-trump" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Trump</a> will be watching the Kansas City Chiefs take on the Philadelphia Eagles at the Superdome in New Orleans.

The president is expected to view the match from a private box, accompanied by House Speaker Mike Johnson, among others. Both Missouri and Pennsylvania, the states represented in the game, played a key role in Trump's electoral victory in November.
<h2>Super Bowl LIX: Who will Trump support?</h2>
When asked last week about his prediction for the winner, Trump responded, &ldquo;I don&rsquo;t want to say, but there&rsquo;s a certain quarterback that seems to be a pretty good winner.&rdquo; His statement appeared to reference Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
On Friday, Trump took to Truth Social, saying, &ldquo;Two great Quarterbacks in this game. Also, an unbelievable running back, and the absolute best tight end in football (Ever!). Incredible coaching! If they would only get rid of that really weird looking new Kickoff 'deal,' which actually makes football more dangerous, they would be doing everybody, especially the fans, a big favour. ANYWAY, IT WILL BE A GREAT GAME!!!.&rdquo;

<h2>Do Presidents attend the Super Bowl?</h2>
While vice presidents have attended previous Super Bowls, sitting presidents have typically limited their involvement to a pre-game television interview with the network broadcasting the match.
President Biden opted out of these interviews in the past two years, and Trump declined in 2018. This year, Trump confirmed on Truth Social that he would be interviewed by Fox before the game.
<h2>Trump's contentious relationship with NFL</h2>
During his first presidential term, Trump had a contentious relationship with the NFL, particularly over player protests during the national anthem. The movement began in 2016 when then-49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick knelt during &ldquo;The Star-Spangled Banner&rdquo; to protest racial and social injustices.

Trump strongly opposed these protests, calling on team owners to dismiss players who refused to stand for the anthem. &ldquo;Wouldn&rsquo;t you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, you&rsquo;d say, &lsquo;Get that son of a b***h off the field right now. Out! He&rsquo;s fired,&rsquo;&rdquo; he said at a 2017 rally in Huntsville, Alabama.
His comments led to widespread backlash from the league, with many players increasing their protests and even some NFL owners criticising his stance.
Following the Eagles' Super Bowl victory that season, Trump cancelled the traditional White House celebration after most players signalled they would not attend.
&ldquo;They disagree with their president because he insists that they proudly stand for the national anthem, hand on heart, in honour of the great men and women of our military and the people of our country,&rdquo; Trump stated at the time.
<h2>NFL to drop &ldquo;End Racism&rdquo; slogan this year amid Trump's DEI rollback</h2>
Meanwhile, the NFL has announced that it will not use the slogan &ldquo;End Racism&rdquo; in this year&rsquo;s Super Bowl for the first time since 2021, a phrase that had appeared in the past four editions.
The league insisted this was not a response to the political climate under the Trump administration, which has rolled back diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives in federal agencies, but was instead due to recent tragic events in the US.
The phrases &ldquo;Choose Love&rdquo; and &ldquo;It Takes All of Us&rdquo; have been deemed more fitting, following the terrorist attack in New Orleans on New Year&rsquo;s Eve and the devastating wildfires in California last month.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell reaffirmed the league&rsquo;s commitment to diversity efforts, saying, &ldquo;We've not only convinced ourselves, we've proven it to ourselves. It does make the NFL better.&rdquo;
Trump will be among numerous high-profile figures attending the game. Pop star Taylor Swift, who is in a relationship with Chiefs player Travis Kelce, is also expected to be present. She previously endorsed Harris in the 2024 election.

Trump at the Super Bowl LIX: A historic first for US President as his NFL feud lingers

South Africa on Saturday condemned a "campaign of misinformation" after US President Donald Trump issued an order freezing aid to the country over a law he alleges allows land to be seized from white farmers.
"We are concerned by what seems to be a campaign of misinformation and propaganda aimed at misrepresenting our great nation," the government said.
Land ownership is a contentious issue in South Africa, with most farmland still owned by white people three decades after the end of apartheid. It is a legacy of a policy of expropriating land from the black population that endured during apartheid and the colonial period before it.

"It is disappointing to observe that such narratives seem to have found favour among decision-makers in the United States of America," Pretoria said.
Trump claimed on Friday the law would "enable the government of South Africa to seize ethnic minority Afrikaners' agricultural property without compensation".
The allegation came in an executive order, which also noted foreign policy clashes between the United States and South Africa over the war in Gaza, particularly Pretoria's genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice.
South Africa's foreign ministry said it "has taken note" of Trump's executive order but added: "It is of great concern that the foundational premise of this order lacks factual accuracy and fails to recognize South Africa's profound and painful history of colonialism and apartheid."

Trump's executive order pledges to assist the &ldquo;ethnic minority Afrikaners" -- descendants of the first European settlers, including offering refugee status to what it said were "racially disfavoured landowners".
State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce said Saturday that "persecuted South African farmers and other innocent victims being targeted solely based on their race who choose to resettle in America will be welcome."
"The United States will also defend the rights and interests of those remaining descendants of settlers threatened with expropriation without compensation and other intolerable abuses," she said on X.

<h2>'Afrikaners or Amerikaners?'</h2>
President Cyril Ramaphosa said in a national address on Thursday his country would not be "intimidated" by the United States.
"We are witnessing the rise of nationalism, protectionism, the pursuit of narrow interests and the decline of common cause," Ramaphosa said.
Trump made a blanket claim that the South African land law would allow the government to seize Afrikaners' property "without compensation".
The law, which came into force in January, clarifies the legal framework for expropriations. Most legal experts stress it does not add new content.
It allows the government, as a matter of public interest, to decide on expropriations without compensation -- but only in certain exceptional circumstances where it would be "just and equitable".
For several days, South Africans of all racial origins have taken to social media to mock the US stance.
"Should we now call them Amerikaners?" quipped one person on Saturday.
"Should we expect wine estates or safari reserves to be evacuated?" joked another. Most estates and private reserves in the country belong to white families.

On Saturday, Afriforum, a small organisation dedicated to "protecting and promoting the Afrikaner identity", expressed its "great appreciation" to Trump, while stressing that white South Africans' place was in their home country.
White South Africans make up around seven percent of the population, according to date from 2022. Afrikaners make up a proportion of that group.

South Africa slams Trump’s aid freeze over land reform ‘misinformation’

Thousands of people who are against Iran&rsquo;s government gathered in Paris on Saturday. They were joined by Ukrainians, all calling for Iran&rsquo;s leaders to be removed. Many hoped that US President <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/donald-trump" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Donald Trump&rsquo;s</a> 'maximum pressure' policy could help bring change.
The protest was organised by the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), an opposition group based in Paris that is banned in Iran. The protest happened while two members of the group faced execution, and six others were sentenced to death in November.

"We say your end has come. With or without talks, with or without nuclear weapons, protests and removal will happen," said NCRI President-elect Maryam Rajavi in a speech.
Many protesters came from different parts of Europe, waving Iranian flags and shouting against Iran&rsquo;s government. Some held images mocking Iran&rsquo;s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei.
Among the protesters were hundreds of Ukrainians, who accused Iran of helping Russian President Vladimir Putin in the war against Ukraine.

The NCRI, also called Mujahideen-e-Khalq in Persian, was once considered a terrorist group by the US and the European Union. However, it was removed from their lists in 2012.
Mohammad Sabetraftar, a 63-year-old Iranian living in exile for 40 years and now running a taxi business in the UK, defended the NCRI. He said the group was the best hope for democracy in Iran.

The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has offered voluntary buyouts to all its employees, as per reports from US media.

A CIA spokesperson, who spoke anonymously to CNN, said that the move is part of Director John Ratcliffe&rsquo;s efforts to &ldquo;ensure the CIA workforce is responsive to the administration&rsquo;s national security priorities.&rdquo;
The spokesperson added that this initiative forms &ldquo;part of a holistic strategy to infuse the agency with renewed energy.&rdquo;

In addition to the buyouts, the CIA has also stopped hiring processes for applicants who had already received conditional job offers, according to the Wall Street Journal.
A senior aide to Ratcliffe, also unnamed in the report, revealed that some of these offers might be withdrawn if the applicants do not meet the new requirements aligned with the agency&rsquo;s revised objectives.
These include addressing drug cartels, managing&nbsp;Trump&rsquo;s trade war policies, and countering China&rsquo;s influence. The CIA has not disclosed details regarding its budget or workforce size.

'To infuse renewed energy': CIA halts hiring, offers buyouts to employees as Trump’s downsizing efforts expand

The FBI has provided the US Department of Justice with details of thousands of employees involved in investigations related to the 6 January 2021 Capitol riot, according to a report by CNN.
This request has unsettled many FBI employees, who suspect it is an attempt to compile a list of individuals potentially facing dismissal under the Trump administration.
Acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove issued a memo on Friday titled 'Terminations', asking FBI officials to submit the information by noon on Tuesday, CNN reported. Bove had previously dismissed eight senior FBI officials responsible for overseeing cyber, national security, and criminal investigations.

Sources told CNN that over 5,000 records were handed over, including employee ID numbers, job titles, and their involvement in the January 6 investigations. However, names were not included. The FBI consists of more than 13,000 agents and a total workforce of around 38,000 employees.
<h2>FBI employees file class-action lawsuit against Justice Department</h2>
On Tuesday, several FBI employees filed a lawsuit against the Justice Department, claiming that the demand for agents to complete a survey violated constitutional and privacy laws. The lawsuit alleges the survey was intended to "purge" personnel from the agency.
The plaintiffs have requested a federal judge to prevent the Trump administration from releasing or publishing the surveys and the information they contain.

According to the lawsuit, the survey required agents to disclose their roles within the FBI and their specific involvement in the January 6 investigations.
This included whether they had executed arrests, participated in grand jury proceedings, or testified in court. The lawsuit was filed as a class-action complaint by several anonymous FBI employees.

Trump’s Justice Department reportedly has records of 5,000 Jan 6 investigators: FBI 'purge' coming?

The United States Postal Service (USPS) announced on Tuesday (Feb 04) that it will temporarily suspend accepting parcels from mainland China and Hong Kong. According to the USPS official website, letters will not be affected by this decision. The suspension, which is effective immediately, will remain in place "until further notice."
USPS has not provided a specific reason for halting incoming parcels, though it comes under broader tariffs introduced by US President Donald Trump. These include a wide-ranging tariff on imports and the removal of the de minimis duty-free exemption for low-value packages.
<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/trump-signs-executive-order-to-withdraw-us-from-un-bodied-alleges-anti-american-bias-8691643" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Also read: Trump signs executive order to withdraw US from UN bodies, alleges &lsquo;anti-American bias&rsquo;</a>
The move is expected to significantly affect consumer purchases from major online retailers such as Amazon. According to a 2023 report from the US Congressional Committee on China, nearly half of all parcels entering the US under the de minimis exemption originated from China.
US authorities have raised concerns that the high volume of parcels entering the country under this exemption has made it increasingly difficult to conduct proper screening, potentially allowing illegal goods to slip through unnoticed.
<h2>What is the de minimis rule?</h2>
The de minimis rule allows low-value imports to bypass customs duties and standard screening procedures. In the US, shipments valued under $800 qualify for duty-free entry when sent directly to consumers.

A recent executive order by Donald Trump has eliminated this exemption, meaning goods worth $800 (&pound;641) or less will now be subject to duties and certain taxes. The so-called "de minimis" tax loophole had come under growing scrutiny as Chinese e-commerce platforms such as Shein and Temu used it extensively to reach US customers.

China on Wednesday voiced its "resolute opposition" to US tariffs on its exports and called for "dialogue" to resolve trade differences.

<h2>Trump says he is in 'no rush' to speak with Xi Jinping</h2>
Meanwhile, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/donald-trump" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Donald Trump</a> has said that he is in no hurry to speak with China's President, Xi Jinping, following the introduction of tit-for-tat tariffs between the two nations.
On Tuesday, shortly after new 10% tariffs on Chinese goods took effect, Beijing responded by announcing levies on US energy, vehicles, and equipment. From 10 February, coal and liquefied natural gas (LNG) products will be subject to a 15% tariff, while crude oil, agricultural machinery, and large-engine cars will face a 10% levy.
Additionally, China has revealed plans to investigate Google and the US fashion conglomerate that owns Tommy Hilfiger and Calvin Klein.
Earlier, Trump delayed proposed tariffs on Mexico and Canada for a month after both countries agreed to step up efforts to tackle the flow of fentanyl and undocumented migrants into the US.
Although Trump had initially said that talks with Xi could take place yesterday, he told reporters at the White House on Tuesday afternoon that he was in "no rush" to engage in discussions.

The United States Postal Service (USPS) announced on Tuesday (Feb 04) that it will temporarily suspend accepting parcels from mainland China and Hong Kong. According to the USPS official website, letters will not be affected by this decision. The suspension, which is effective immediately, will remain in place "until further notice." USPS has not provided a specific reason for halting incoming parcels, though it comes under broader tariffs introduced by US President Donald Trump. These include a wide-ranging tariff on imports and the removal of the de minimis duty-free exemption for low-value packages. The Senate Finance Committee voted on Tuesday (4 February) to move forward with President Donald Trump&rsquo;s nominee for US Health Secretary, Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
The committee, which consists of 27 members&mdash;14 Republicans and 13 Democrats&mdash;saw all Republican members backing Kennedy&rsquo;s nomination, while Democrats opposed it unanimously.
The decision means Kennedy&rsquo;s nomination will now proceed to a full Senate vote.

Senator Raphael Warnock of Georgia also criticised Kennedy, calling him &ldquo;manifestly unqualified&rdquo; and saying, &ldquo;I simply do not trust him to oversee the CDC. He&rsquo;s unqualified and I say everybody here knows it.&rdquo;

El Salvador has agreed to accommodate violent criminals from the United States and accept deportees of any nationality, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced on Monday (Feb 04).
The controversial agreement has raised concerns among critics and human rights organisations, who question its legality.

Rubio announced the deal following a meeting with Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele.
&ldquo;In an act of extraordinary friendship to our country &hellip; (El Salvador) has agreed to the most unprecedented and extraordinary migratory agreement anywhere in the world,&rdquo; Rubio told reporters.
<h2>'El Salvador to accept deportation of any illegal alien in the United States'</h2>
As per the agreement, El Salvador will continue accepting deported Salvadorans who entered the US illegally. Additionally, it will &ldquo;accept for deportation any illegal alien in the United States who is a criminal from any nationality, be they MS-13 or Tren de Aragua, and house them in his jails,&rdquo; Rubio said, referencing two notorious gangs with members from El Salvador and Venezuela.
Furthermore, Bukele has &ldquo;offered to house in his jails dangerous American criminals in custody in our country, including those of US citizenship and legal residents,&rdquo; according to Rubio.

Bukele later confirmed the arrangement on X, clarifying that "we are willing to take in only convicted criminals (including convicted US citizens) into our mega-prison (CECOT) in exchange for a fee."
He added, "The fee would be relatively low for the US but significant for us, making our entire prison sustainable."
However, it remains uncertain whether the US government will move forward with the proposal, given the potential legal challenges. Any attempt by the Trump administration to deport incarcerated US nationals to another country would likely face strong legal opposition.
The maximum-security facility Bukele referred to, the Terrorism Confinement Centre (CECOT), is central to his crackdown against violent gangs. The prison, which can hold up to 40,000 inmates, has played a major role in his strategy to combat crime since taking office in 2019.

Although crime rates in El Salvador have decreased under Bukele&rsquo;s leadership, the treatment of prisoners has sparked criticism from human rights organisations, who describe the country&rsquo;s prison conditions as inhumane.
The US State Department&rsquo;s travel advisory for El Salvador also warns that detainees in the country endure &ldquo;harsh&rdquo; prison conditions and lack access to due process.
&ldquo;Overcrowding constitutes a serious threat to prisoners&rsquo; health and lives. In many facilities, provisions for sanitation, potable water, ventilation, temperature control, and lighting are inadequate or nonexistent,&rdquo; the advisory states.

El Salvador's ‘mega-prison’ to take in America’s worst criminals, illegal immigrants but 'for a price'

US President Donald Trump has stated that Elon Musk, who has been given the responsibility of reducing government expenditure, is under his direct supervision and cannot take any action without approval.&nbsp;
"Elon has got access only to letting people go that he thinks are no good if we agree with him, and it&rsquo;s only if we agree with him. Elon can&rsquo;t do and won&rsquo;t do anything without our approval," Trump said.

"Sometimes we won&rsquo;t agree with it, and we&rsquo;ll not go where he wants to go. But I think he&rsquo;s doing a great job," Trump told reporters.
His comments come amid growing concerns over the level of access granted to Musk&rsquo;s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) within the government&rsquo;s financial system, following the billionaire&rsquo;s decision to dismantle the US Agency for International Development (USAID).
<h2>'Won&rsquo;t let him go near a conflict': Donald Trump</h2>
Speaking at the White House, Trump clarified that Musk would not be allowed access to areas where conflicts exist.
&ldquo;And we&rsquo;ll give him the approval where appropriate, and where not appropriate, we won&rsquo;t; where we think there&rsquo;s a conflict, we won&rsquo;t let him go near it,&rdquo; Trump said.
"But he reports in and he, it&rsquo;s something that he feels very strongly about, and I&rsquo;m impressed because he&rsquo;s running, obviously, a big company," Trump added.

The US president's comments came shortly after a team led by Musk effectively shut down USAID. Over the weekend, Musk publicly criticised the agency, calling it &ldquo;evil&rdquo; and &ldquo;a criminal organisation,&rdquo; adding that it was &ldquo;time for it to die.&rdquo; On Monday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio was appointed as the agency&rsquo;s interim head, stating he would consult with Congress on its future.
Initially, Trump had announced that Musk would co-chair the newly created Department of Government Efficiency. However, several individuals involved in the initiative, including the other co-chair, have already left, leaving Musk with considerable authority.
Musk had initially sought volunteers to join DOGE without pay. However, since the department is now part of the government, there is uncertainty over whether staff are being paid and whether they are permitted to hold external jobs that might create conflicts of interest.

On Monday, Trump reiterated that Musk would not be permitted to interfere in areas where conflicts arise. &ldquo;If there&rsquo;s a conflict, then we won&rsquo;t let him get near it,&rdquo; he said. However, he did not clarify who would enforce these restrictions or whether Musk had already been barred from any governmental departments.
Democratic lawmakers have become increasingly vocal in their opposition to Musk&rsquo;s involvement in government affairs, particularly his moves to either dismantle agencies or significantly reduce government employment.

‘Can’t do anything without our approval’: Trump hints at leash on Musk as DOGE ramps up govt purge

US President <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/donald-trump" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Donald Trump</a> on Monday (Feb 3) stated that he wants Ukraine to supply rare earth minerals to the United States as a form of compensation for the financial aid provided in support of its war against Russia.
Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump claimed that Ukraine was open to the idea and emphasised his desire for "equalisation" in return for Washington's near "$300 billion" in assistance.
"We're telling Ukraine they have very valuable rare earths," Trump said.

"We're looking to do a deal with Ukraine where they're going to secure what we're giving them with their rare earths and other things," he added.
Trump&rsquo;s proposal comes amid a freeze on foreign development aid by his administration, which has forced many humanitarian organisations in Ukraine to suspend their operations. Despite this, President Volodymyr Zelensky has said that US military aid provided under the Biden administration remains unaffected by the current halt in foreign assistance.
Trump has consistently voiced opposition to the continued supply of billions of dollars in military equipment and weaponry to Ukraine, arguing that the financial burden on the US is too great.
It remains unclear whether Trump&rsquo;s use of the term "rare earths" was about all critical minerals or specifically rare earth elements.

<h2>What are rare earths?</h2>
Rare earths refer to a group of 17 metals essential in manufacturing magnets used in electric vehicles, mobile phones, and various electronic devices. There are no known substitutes for these elements.
According to the US Geological Survey, 50 minerals are classified as critical for the American economy and national defence. This includes certain rare earth elements, as well as nickel and lithium.
Ukraine possesses significant deposits of uranium, lithium, and titanium, though these are not among the world&rsquo;s top five largest reserves by volume. The United States also has its own untapped reserves of these and other essential minerals.
<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/doge-digging-its-own-grave-internet-slams-billionaire-elon-musk-over-doges-long-work-hours-remark-8689072" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Also read: &lsquo;DOGE digging its own grave&rsquo;: Internet slams billionaire Elon Musk over DOGE&rsquo;s long work hours remark</a>
<h2>Why is Trump interested in Ukraine&rsquo;s rare earth minerals?</h2>
The US currently operates only one rare earth mine and has minimal processing capability. While several companies are working on developing new projects, China remains the dominant global producer of rare earth elements and other crucial minerals.
Trump&rsquo;s approach to exchanging aid for minerals aligns with his broader foreign policy strategy, which has prioritised economic leverage in international dealings. He has used similar tactics to pressure allies, such as Colombia and Mexico, into negotiating agreements on various issues.
His interest in Ukraine&rsquo;s rare earth resources is not entirely new, as Zelensky himself had previously stressed Ukraine&rsquo;s wealth of critical minerals as a means to attract the Trump administration&rsquo;s support. In recent months, the Ukrainian president has argued that defending Ukraine is also in America's economic interest, given the potential benefits of Ukraine&rsquo;s mineral resources for US industries.
Following Trump's comments, a senior Ukrainian official told The New York Times on Monday night that Ukraine is open to working with the US on rare earth mineral agreements, provided that Washington offers enough security guarantees to prevent these resources from falling into Russian hands.
Last year, Ukraine had planned to sign an agreement with the Biden administration to collaborate on extracting and processing minerals. However, the Ukrainian authorities delayed the signing, with officials on both sides indicating that Kyiv was waiting for Trump to take office before finalising a deal.

Ukraine possesses significant deposits of uranium, lithium, and titanium, though these are not among the world’s top five largest reserves by volume. The United States also has its own untapped reserves of these and other essential minerals. Also read: ‘DOGE digging its own grave’: Internet slams billionaire Elon Musk over DOGE’s long work hours remark Why is Trump interested in Ukraine’s rare earth minerals? The US currently operates only one rare earth mine and has minimal processing capability. While several companies are working on developing new projects, China remains the dominant global producer of rare earth elements and other crucial minerals. Trump’s approach to exchanging aid for minerals aligns with his broader foreign policy strategy, which has prioritised economic leverage in international dealings. He has used similar tactics to pressure allies, such as Colombia and Mexico, into negotiating agreements on various issues. His interest in Ukraine’s rare earth resources is not entirely new, as Zelensky himself had previously stressed Ukraine’s wealth of critical minerals as a means to attract the Trump administration’s support. In recent months, the Ukrainian president has argued that defending Ukraine is also in America's economic interest, given the potential benefits of Ukraine’s mineral resources for US industries. (With inputs from agencies)
