Royal Challengers Bangalore made some bizarre decisions during their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 match against Kings XI Punjab and ended up losing by eight wickets at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Thursday.
RCB made some rare tweaks to their batting line up as they sent Washington Sundar and Shivam Dube ahead of an in-form AB de Villiers in the batting order.
Kohli, opening up on the strange decisions, said the team management wanted to continue with the left-right combination while adding they were happy with the decisions despite them not coming off.

Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni Tuesday hailed Sam Curran as a "complete cricketer" for Chennai Super Kings after the England all-rounder played a key part in the team's much-needed IPL win.

The 22-year-old Curran hit 31 after opening the batting and then returned figures of 1-18 from his three overs of left-arm pace bowling as Chennai bounced back from two losses to beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by 20 runs in Dubai.

Curran, a left-hand batsman who was brought by Chennai for $742,000, gave the team a brisk start in his 21-ball knock before Shane Watson, who scored 42 coming one down, and Ambati Rayudu (41) guided the team to 167 for six.

Curran then shared the new ball with Deepak Chahar to breakthrough with the big wicket of skipper David Warner, caught and bowled for nine, as Hyderabad managed just 147-8.

"Curran is a complete cricketer for us and you need that seaming allrounder. He strikes the ball nicely, he can bat up the order, he plays spinners well," Dhoni said of his team's youngest member.

"He can give us those 15-45 runs if you need momentum. I feel as the tournament progresses, he'll get even more comfortable with death bowling. That's one of the reasons we kept him away at the death."

Dwayne Bravo bowled the final over of the match and returned figures of 2-25 as Chennai moved level with Hyderabad on six points from eight games in a tough first half of the Twenty20 tournament in the United Arab Emirates.

Curran, younger brother of Tom Curran who plays for Rajasthan Royals, has proved his worth for three-time IPL winners Chennai while batting in the top, middle and lower order.

"In terms of his contribution so far it has exceeded, I think, what we wanted. Probably not in his eyes because he is very competitive," Chennai coach Stephen Fleming told reporters in the post-match virtual chat.

"Every time he has had the challenge he has risen to it. He has been desperate to make a difference and I think we saw a glimpse today of what he can do for us in the future."

Ravindra Jadeja also contributed with an unbeaten 25 off 10 balls and returned to take the key wicket of England's Jonny Bairstow, bowled for 23, with his left-arm spin.

"This was one game as close to perfect as possible. One or two overs we could have been slightly better, but it was a very good game," said Dhoni.

New Zealand's Kane Williamson struck 57 off 39 deliveries but his first half-century of the season went in vain as Hyderabad kept losing wickets.

"He can give us those 15-45 runs if you need momentum. I feel as the tournament progresses, he'll get even more comfortable with death bowling. That's one of the reasons we kept him away at the death." Dwayne Bravo bowled the final over of the match and returned figures of 2-25 as Chennai moved level with Hyderabad on six points from eight games in a tough first half of the Twenty20 tournament in the United Arab Emirates. He has been desperate to make a difference and I think we saw a glimpse today of what he can do for us in the future." Ravindra Jadeja also contributed with an unbeaten 25 off 10 balls and returned to take the key wicket of England's Jonny Bairstow, bowled for 23, with his left-arm spin. "This was one game as close to perfect as possible. One or two overs we could have been slightly better, but it was a very good game," said Dhoni. New Zealand's Kane Williamson struck 57 off 39 deliveries but his first half-century of the season went in vain as Hyderabad kept losing wickets.

New proposals backed by Liverpool and Manchester United for wide-ranging reform of English football have been criticised by the UK government, Premier League and fans' groups.

The so-called "Project Big Picture" has been labelled a "power grab" by the Premier League's biggest and wealthiest clubs, taking advantage of the dire financial position of the English Football League (EFL) -- which comprises the three divisions directly beneath the top flight -- amid the coronavirus crisis.

But many in the EFL, including chairman Rick Parry, back the plan as a means of addressing the imbalance in resources between the top and bottom of the football pyramid.

Competition reform

The principal difference on the field would be the reduction of the Premier League from 20 to 18 teams with the overall number of clubs in the top four English divisions shrinking from 92 to 90.

While all eyes are locked on the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 in the UAE, preparations have started for the Abu Dhabi T10, which has a separate fan-base for the fast-paced, superstar-laden tournament. Two stars in the world of cricket, Sam Billings and Carlos Brathwaite gave the T10 format a thumbs up while agreeing that the mini format of the gentlemen’s game could take the sport global and could be a major addition in the Olympics as well.

In a virtual media round table conference, which took place on Tuesday, both Billings and Brathwaite acknowledged that T10 already has added an exciting element in the white-ball formats.

However, when WION asked the duo about whether the T10 format has started to influence how T20 format is being played in today’s time, both Billings and Brathwaite said that it hasn’t made a change in how 20-20 cricket is played but added that it will slowly started to influence the game.

“I wouldn’t say that T10 has influenced other formats of the game but it has opened up the minds and tactical approach of cricketers. In T10, cricketers don’t have much time to think and it is action from the word go. So you need to be ready even before going onto the field. But the format is exciting and I am sure it will leave a deep impact when thinking out-of-the-box tactics,” said Brathwaite.

“Well, I would certainly agree with Carlos there. T10 is a fun format to be a part of but things change massively when it comes to other formats. In other formats, you are allowed to spend a bit of time on the pitch, assess the situation and play your game accordingly. But in T10, you can’t waste deliveries. But it will help cricketers in expanding their game and learn more tricks both with the bat and ball,” said England international Billings.

Billings was also of the view that wasting deliveries, even one, puts pressure on the batsman and it test the character of a player.

“I think it’s really the pace of the game and given its span of only 10 overs, that really separates the T10 format from the T20 format. The format is more compact and you have to be in the game right from the beginning. You waste a few deliveries and suddenly the pressure is on the batsman. The key is to be in the game from the beginning until the end,” Billings said about the format.
"I will see if the game kind of picks up around the world, certainly with the Olympics as a kind of carrot, I think, that would be the best encouraging factor internationally,” Billings added.

Whereas Brathwaite batted for T10 format to be in the Olympics as the big-hitting all-rounder said the format is attracting wider range of audience into the world of cricket.

"It's about handling pressure and a player needs to get the basics right. It will interest a person to get into cricket. It's only 10 overs. Let's get through 60 balls and have a game of cricket. Let's see what it's like. I hope that in my lifetime cricket can get into the Olympics. And this is one way I see it being feasible," Brathwaite said.

RCB thrashed KKR by 78 runs in Match 28 of the 2020 IPL, at Sharjah. Bangalore got 194/2 largely due to AB de Villiers, who cut loose towards the end of the innings to finish on 73 not out, off just 33 balls. In response, Kolkata finished on 112/9, with only Shubman Gill (34 in 25) making a contribution. Chris Morris (4-0-17-2), Washington Sundar (4-0-20-2), and Yuzvendra Chahal (4-0-12-1) were Bangalore’s stars with the ball.

In My11 Circle Cricbuzz Live, Harsha Bhogle hailed de Villiers expressed his surprise at “genius” de Villiers having retired. “That was not an easy wicket,” he explained, making special mention of the fact that he had got those runs out of an unbroken 100-run partnership off 46 balls.

Kohli and de Villiers became the first pair to register 10 century partnerships in the history of the IPL. Gautam Bhimani mentioned how, unlike in most of the other nine stands, “very rarely would you see someone like a Virat Kohli having to play second fiddle.”

Joy Bhattacharjya hailed the current Bangalore team as the best he has seen since 2016. He also pointed out how Bangalore won convincingly despite not requiring Shivam Dube to bat or bowl: “You had an all-rounder in reserve who was not necessary because the rest of the guys did their jobs, and that’s fantastic for them, because that means they still got something in their tank even after an 82-run win.”

He also pointed out how Bangalore won convincingly despite not requiring Shivam Dube to bat or bowl: “You had an all-rounder in reserve who was not necessary because the rest of the guys did their jobs, and that’s fantastic for them, because that means they still got something in their tank even after an 82-run win.” ALSO READ: Tendulkar, Pathan laud Indian Army for organising women's cricket league in Jammu & Kashmir Bhogle made special mention of Virat Kohli’s influence on Washington Sundar: “I think he has discovered some belief in Washington Sundar… He’s being able to get the best out of him, he’s sending him up at number five, I think Washington Sundar goes to bed every day thinking ‘you know what, my captain likes me.’” With an economy rate of 4.90, Sundar has been one of the stars of the tournament. IPL 2020, DC vs RR Preview: Injury-plagued Delhi Capitals take on Royals

All eyes are on MS Dhoni whenever Chennai Super Kings take the field in the Indian Premier League (IPL). In CSK’s encounter against Sunrisers Hyderabad in Dubai, Dhoni once again became the talk of the town, not for his mammoth 102m six but for his reaction towards the umpire.

The incident happened in the 19th over when Shardul Thakur was handed over the ball in a tensed situation. SRH needed 25 runs to win off 11 deliveries with Rashid Khan on strike. Shardul was targeting the wide yorker and in the second delivery, the ball seemed to have crossed the tramline. Straight umpire Paul Reiffel stretched his arms wide to signal a wide but the agitated reaction from Dhoni and Shardul seemed to have forced Reiffel to change his mind and decide not to call it a wide delivery.

Even though Rashid didn’t shuffle a lot, the ball appeared to have pitched outside the wide tramline. Rashid Khan looked surprised with the call and even non-striker Shahbaz Nadeem had a word with Reiffel about the decision.
MS Dhoni, in the post-match presentation said: Ultimately what really matters is you getting two points. What T20s have shown is that there are a few games that don't go your way and then there are some that go your way even when you haven't earned it. Today I felt we did a very good job even in the batting. There was some purpose with the bat and the batsmen assessed the situation very well. With a total like 160, it all depends on the start you get in the first six overs. The fast bowlers did the job, the spinners came into play and it was one game that was as close to being perfect. It was a par score and I usually assess scores after the first six overs. If there are misfields in the first six overs, then a par score becomes an under par score. A lot depended on the fast bowlers. I just told them to be expressive on the field and hit their areas.

Lewis Hamilton equalled Michael Schumacher’s record of 91 Formula One wins on Sunday when he guided his Mercedes to a narrow, if measured, victory at a frantic Eifel Grand Prix.

Taking full advantage of team-mate and pole-sitter Valtteri Bottas’ early retirement with engine problems, the runaway series leader and six-time champion drove a well-judged race to claim his seventh victory from 11 contests this year.

"What a result," he said on the Mercedes team radio after taking the chequered flag clear of Max Verstappen for Red Bull with Renault's Daniel Ricciardo in third.

Premier League chiefs have called for unity after leading clubs discussed a "damaging" overhaul that would trigger the most radical changes to English football in decades.

A Daily Telegraph report on Sunday claimed Liverpool and Manchester United have been driving the 'Project Big Picture' talks, which would rank as the biggest revamp of the sport since the Premier League was launched in 1992.

Among the proposals being considered are a reduction in the Premier League from 20 to 18 teams, the abolition of the League Cup and the Community Shield and greater voting power for 'big six' clubs Liverpool, United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham and Manchester City.

In return for agreeing to those controversial ideas, the Premier League would reportedly give 25 per cent of its annual income to the 72 clubs in the Championship, League One and League Two.

It was suggested the Premier League would make a £250 million ($326 million) payment to the Football League to address the existing crisis, while the Football Association would receive what is being described as a £100 million "gift".

Liverpool's American owners, the Fenway Sports Group, came forward with the initial plan, which has been worked on by United co-chairman Joel Glazer, according to the report.

There will be huge debate over the proposals, which have come in response to the Football League's request for financial aid to stave off the damaging economic impact of the coronavirus.

Football in England has been played behind closed doors since March because of the pandemic, with no sign of fans returning to stadiums until next year at the earliest.

English Football League chairman Rick Parry said the plans should be welcomed, telling the Telegraph: "It is definitely going to be challenging and it is an enormous change so that won't be without some pain.

"Do I genuinely think it's for the greater good of the game as a whole? Absolutely.

"And if the (big) six are deriving some benefit then why shouldn't they. Why wouldn't they put their names to this otherwise?"

But the Premier League hit back at Parry and distanced themselves from the incendiary scheme.

"English football is the world's most watched, and has a vibrant, dynamic and competitive league structure that drives interest around the globe," a Premier League statement said.

"To maintain this position it is important we all work together.

"Both the Premier League and The FA support a wide-ranging discussion on the future of the game, including its competition structures, calendar and overall financing particularly in light of the effects of COVID-19.

"Football has many stakeholders, therefore this work should be carried out through the proper channels enabling all clubs and stakeholders the opportunity to contribute.

"In the Premier League's view, a number of the individual proposals in the plan published today could have a damaging impact on the whole game and we are disappointed to see that Rick Parry, Chair of the EFL, has given his on-the-record support.

"The Premier League has been working in good faith with its clubs and the EFL to seek a resolution to the requirement for COVID-19 rescue funding. This work will continue."

To reduce the Premier League from 20 to 18 teams, the report claimed four clubs would be relegated directly, with two promoted from the Championship.

In addition, there would be play-offs involving the team to finish 16th in the Premier League and those in third, fourth and fifth in the second tier.

The mooted change to voting proposals would also infuriate smaller clubs in the top-flight.

The 'big six', along with Everton, West Ham and Southampton would be granted special status.

Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper Virat Kohli, after roaring back to form with a stunning 90 not-out vs Chennai Super Kings, said he was “putting too much pressure” on himself in the early matches of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 while adding the Super Over thriller against Mumbai Indians “opener his mindset” and helped him get back to form.

Kohli, who was struggling for runs in the early tournament, hammered an unbeaten 90 off 52 deliveries as RCB defeated CSK by 37 runs on Saturday.

"I was trying to do too much and putting too much pressure on myself, taking focus away from what I need to do - watch the ball and bat. Sometimes you forget you're only a player out there, and the responsibility then kicks in," Kohli said in the post-match presentation.

"If you think too much about responsibility, you get burdened and you don't play as a player. Your skills are also required for your team's success. That Super Over where I had to strike every ball, else we would have lost, really opened my mindset. And then I started enjoying training, enjoying batting."

"From there on, we pushed forward. We spoke during the second timeout (with the bat) that 140-150 would be good. Ended up getting more than that. It was a tricky pitch," Kohli further added.

"Really pleased to get two points. We have back-to-back games coming up, so important to build momentum," he said.

Veteran Pakistan all-rounder Shoaib Malik has become the first Pakistan and Asian cricketer to go past the mind-boggling tally of 10,000 runs in T20 format. Malik also became the third overall batsman to achieve the historic milestone while playing for his team Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in the ongoing National T20 Cup in Pakistan on October 10.

Malik not only slammed a 44-ball 74 against Balochistan but also became the first Asian to achieve the landmark of scoring 10,000 runs in T20 format of the game.

However, Malik’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa lost the match against Balochistan by six wickets. The National T20 Cup is Malik’s first assignment since the T20I series played against England in September.

BCCI announces squads for Women's T20 Challenge - Here are full teams

While Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic square off for the 56th time in the men's French Open final, the women's game is in the throes of a youthful revolution as Iga Swiatek was crowned its latest first-time Grand Slam champion.

The 19-year-old ensured her place in history as Poland's first major singles champion on Saturday, becoming the ninth woman in 14 tournaments to secure her maiden Slam title.

Swiatek, who used the coronavirus lockdown to complete her graduation exam, has toyed with the idea of continuing her studies, but will surely now go the same route as her vanquished opponent in the Roland Garros final.

Sofia Kenin, 21, turned down a scholarship to the University of Miami in 2017 after holding her own against Maria Sharapova in the third round of that year's US Open.

She went on to win the Australian Open in January and narrowly missed out on becoming the first woman to capture two majors in the same season since Angelique Kerber in 2016.

Her Melbourne triumph followed Bianca Andreescu's breakout performance at last year's US Open, the Canadian taking home the title on her main draw debut in New York.

Since Serena Williams collected the last of her 23 Slam crowns at the 2017 Australian Open, the likes of Simona Halep, Sloane Stephens and the now-retired Caroline Wozniacki have all gone on to land a breakthrough major.

However, the 29-year-old Halep is the outlier in a series of recent major winners, seven of eight who were aged 23 or under at the time.

Kenin, Andreescu and Swiatek have accounted for three with Naomi Osaka grabbing three titles of her own, and top-ranked Ashleigh Barty triumphing at the 2019 French Open.

The average age of champions in that time is 21.5. By comparison, the average age of the eight previous Slam winners was 27.4.

"For sure it's inspiring. I know that there are no limits. Even though you're really young and you're an underdog, you can do a lot in a sport like tennis," said Swiatek.

- 'First of many' says Laver -

Multiple Grand Slam winner Mats Wilander compared Swiatek's game to that of Novak Djokovic, while greats of the past such as Rod Laver and Chris Evert believe the young Pole is just getting started.

"I think she is there to be a Grand Slam champion, multiple times. I genuinely believe that Iga can be the one," Wilander told Eurosport.

Laver hailed Swiatek's "nerveless performance" in what was only her second tour-level final and tweeted it was "the first of many majors to come".

Evert, who won seven times in Paris, wrote: "What a sterling two weeks of brilliant tennis. Many, many more GS Titles to come." She also paid tribute to a "great year" for Kenin, 16-2 at Slams in 2020.

As Williams, who withdrew in Paris with an Achilles injury, continues her pursuit of Margaret Court's record 24 majors, the window of opportunity for the 39-year-old is closing with a number of young players rising to prominence.

"I think it's great. A new generation coming up," said Kenin. "It's always good to see youngsters taking over and playing great tennis."

Former US Open finalist Pam Shriver believes Swiatek and Kenin could become the leading faces of the next generation.

"We're always wondering where the next great rivalry is going to be. Well, let's just wonder about this one because they are two years apart," she told rolandgarros.com.

Swiatek hoisted the trophy after swatting aside all comers in swashbuckling style, the first women's champion to win the tournament without a dropping a set since Justine Henin in 2007.

Royal Challengers Bangalore on Saturday continued their winning run as they defeated Chennai Super Kings by 37 runs at the Dubai International Stadium as the MS Dhoni-led outfit suffered crushing defeat again in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020.

With this match, RCB have now registered four wins in their six games in IPL 2020 whereas CSK, for the second time, have lost five of their seven matches in IPL history.

Batting first, Royal Challengers Bangalore were off to a rocky start as they lost star opener Aaron Finch (2) early. However, Devdutt Padikkal (33) and Virat Kohli stitched a crucial partnership before the former was sent packing by Shardul Thakur. CSK followed it by dismissing AB de Villiers for duck and taking Washington Sundar’s wicket for 10.

However, it was relentless Virat Kohli and his class that took on the CSK bowlers. While he kept on finding the boundary rope with his strokes, it was his running between the wickets that helped him score 90 not-out off just 52 balls. Shivam Dube also played a key cameo down the order to help RCB post 169/4 in 20 overs.

While he kept on finding the boundary rope with his strokes, it was his running between the wickets that helped him score 90 not-out off just 52 balls. Shivam Dube also played a key cameo down the order to help RCB post 169/4 in 20 overs.
