Pakistan's head coach and chief selector Misbah-ul-Haq on Monday named 22 probables for the ODI and T20I series against Zimbabwe, insisting he has opted for experience in the 50-over matches and provided extended run to the youngsters in the T20I format.

Pakistan have not played ODIs since the home series against Sri Lanka 12 months ago and the Rawalpindi matches will be part of ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League from which the seven top-ranked sides, apart from hosts India, will qualify directly for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023.

For the Lahore T20Is, the selectors have preferred continuity and consistency, while acknowledging the just concluded National T20 Cup had provided some exciting talent, which will be considered for the Pakistan and Shaheens’ next month tour to New Zealand and early next year’s home T20Is.

The selectors have rewarded Central Punjab’s Abdullah Shafiq with a call-up after the 20-year-old former Pakistan U19 batsman finished as the seventh most successful batsman in the National T20 Cup with 358 runs with a strike-rate of over 133. Abdullah scored a century on his T20 debut, becoming only the second player in history to make a century on both first-class and T20 debuts.

Shoaib Malik, who was player of the final, has made way for Abdullah Shafiq, while Rohail Nazir has been named as Mohammad Rizwan’s back-up wicketkeeper. Sarfaraz Ahmed, who was part of the squad for the England tour, has been encouraged to feature in the first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, starting 25 October, so that he rediscovers better form ahead of the New Zealand tour.

Fast bowlers Hasan Ali and Naseem Shah were not considered for selection as they are recovering from injuries, but have been advised to play in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy to prove their fitness before they are considered for selection.

Probables:

Batsmen&nbsp;- Abdullah Shafiq, Abid Ali, Babar Azam, Fakhar Zaman, Haider Ali, Haris Sohail, Iftikhar Ahmed, Imam-ul-Haq, Khushdil Shah and Mohammad Hafeez

Wicketkeepers&nbsp;- Mohammad Rizwan and Rohail Nazir

Spinners&nbsp;- Imad Wasim, Shadab Khan, Usman Qadir and Zafar Gohar

Fast bowlers&nbsp;- Faheem Ashraf, Haris Rauf, Mohammad Hasnain, Musa Khan, Shaheen Shah and Wahab Riaz

Pakistan head coach and chief selector Misbah-ul-Haq: “The National T20 Cup saw some outstanding individual performances.A few leading performers may feel disappointed that they have been unable to break into the squad. But, I want to reassure them that they will remain in consideration for the New Zealand tour and early next year’s home series. All they now need to do is to carry those impressive run of forms in the upcoming domestic competitions.

“Furthermore, the present T20I squad already comprises youngsters who have played very few matches. As such, it is logical and sensible that we give them the support and confidence by providing them extended runs so that they can show what they are capable of at the highest level and cement their places for future assignments.

“We have resisted the temptation of experimenting in the ODIs for three simple reasons. Firstly, we cannot afford to be complacent and have to respect each and every opponent irrespective of their strength or international ranking. Secondly, every ODI counts as it leads towards automatic qualification for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, and thirdly, we have not played any ODI cricket in the past 12 months.

“Abdullah Shafiq has been rewarded for his tremendous potential and performance. He has been identified as a future prospect and, therefore, drafted into the squad as part of his development.

“Seniors like Shoaib Malik and Sarfaraz Ahmed have not been picked for this series, but I want to categorically state that their careers are not over by any means as performance remains the only criterion for selection. These are strategic decisions as Shoaib’s absence will provide players like Abdullah Shafiq, Haider Ali and Khushdil Shah better chances of featuring in the upcoming matches.

“We have followed the same philosophy while leaving out Mohammad Amir and Usman Shinwari so that bowlers like Mohammad Hasnain, Musa Khan and Haris Rauf can get an extended run.

“Mohammad Hafeez and Wahab Riaz provide us that useful experience in the batting and bowling respectively, that will benefit the youngsters.

“Similarly, not many will disagree that on present form, Mohammad Rizwan is the first-choice wicketkeeper in both the white-ball formats. With an eye on future and as part of the succession plan, Rohail Nazir has been chosen as Rizwan’s back-up wicketkeeper. Instead of Sarfaraz sitting on the substitute bench, it makes sense that he plays in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy so that he retains his fitness and rediscovers form for the tour for the longer and more demanding tour of New Zealand.”

The probables will assemble in Lahore on 21 October for Covid-19 testing and after observing a five-day isolation period, during which they will play two 50-over matches at the Gaddafi Stadium, will travel to Rawalpindi on Monday, 26 October.

The probables for three T20Is will be shortlisted after the ODIs and players unlikely to feature in them will be advised to play in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy third round matches, which will commence from 6 November.

Pakistan probables for ODIs and T20Is:

Babar Azam (captain), Shadab Khan (vice-captain), Abdullah Shafiq, Abid Ali, Faheem Ashraf, Fakhar Zaman, Haider Ali, Haris Rauf, Haris Sohail, Iftikhar Ahmed, Imad Wasim, Imam-ul-Haq, Khushdil Shah, Mohammad Hafeez, Mohammad Hasnain, Mohammad Rizwan, Musa Khan, Rohail Nazir, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Usman Qadir, Wahab Riaz and Zafar Gohar

Delhi Capitals announce Amit Mishra's replacement for IPL 2020

All hell broke loose when the cricketing world feasted on three Super Overs in two matches on Sunday as the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/ipl">Indian Premier League (IPL)</a> touched new heights when it comes to intense encounters and nail-biting drama. While fans were gushing over the fact that the day match between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders went to the Super Over, little did they know that the evening game between Mumbai Indians and Kings XI Punjab will let them witness two Super Overs in a single match – the first such occurrence in IPL history.

The Indian Premier League is known for its quality and is regarded as the best T20 tournament in the world. The matches on Sunday just gave it a seal of approval. And yes, it was not the first time that matches went to Super Over in IPL 2020, remember DC vs KXIP and RCB vs MI?

The most heartening fact about IPL 2020 is the sub-stories it provides. In the first match, it was former KKR captain and current captain, Dinesh Karthik and Eoin Morgan who stitched a crucial partnership before Lockie Ferguson, playing his first game in IPL 2020, took over the charge with the ball. DK's conversations with Varun Chakravarthy are something which fans look forward to whenever KKR play. The young Abdul Samad showing his hitting prowess in the death overs. Kuldeep Yadav making a brave comeback.

In the second match, young Arshdeep Singh picking two crucial wickets of Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan. Or substitute fielder Anukul Roy running to take the catch of Nicholas Pooran in the Super Over. Or even the best batsman of IPL 2020, KL Rahul, trying the uncanny reverse scoop in the Super Over. IPL is magic!

While David Warner smashed Andre Russell for 17 runs in the final over of SRH vs KKR match to take the game to the Super Over. Deepak Hooda and Chris Jordan, for Sunrisers Hyderabad, just managed seven runs off Trent Boult in the 20th over of second innings to take the MI vs KXIP game to the Super Over.

For KKR, Lockie Ferguson’s heroics with the ball, in main match and Super Over, eased them to 10 points in IPL 2020 points table, the MI vs KXIP match had different drama. After being tied at 176 in regular 20-over affair, Jasprit Bumrah restricted Punjab to just five runs in first Super Over before Mohammed Shami steamed in to repeat the same for his Team India team-mate.&nbsp;

Did you know: It was the second time in IPL history that a Super Over was also tied. The last time it happened in 2014, in the match between RR and KKR in Abu Dhabi. However, RR were declared winners on the basis of boundary-count rule.

While it was not the first time that two Super Overs were played in day in a particular tournament, it was the first time in IPL history that the incident happened. The first time two Super Overs were played in the same tournament on same day was on August 27, 2011: Lancashire v Leicestershire and Hampshire v Somerset.

With the IPL throwing twist and tales in every corner, the action is going to be more intense than ever with race to playoffs picking pace with every passing match.

Indian Premier League or Super Over Premier League!

Bruno Fernandes atoned for a missed penalty as Manchester United blitzed Newcastle with late goals on Saturday while VAR denied Liverpool a cathartic victory against Everton on another day of breathless drama in the Premier League.

Elsewhere, Chelsea conceded late to draw 3-3 at home to Southampton while Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola got the better of former assistant Mikel Arteta in a 1-0 win over Arsenal.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men went into their match at St James's Park desperate to restore pride after a 6-1 hammering by Spurs before the international break but were immediately in trouble when Luke Shaw turned the ball into his own net.

United were back on level terms midway through the first half when captain Harry Maguire met Juan Mata's corner with an unstoppable header, just days after the misery of a red card for England against Denmark.

The visitors were handed a golden chance to take the lead from the spot after VAR awarded them a penalty for Jamal Lewis's challenge on Marcus Rashford but Karl Darlow dived to his right to save Fernandes's 58th-minute spot-kick.

However, the Portuguese made amends for his miss with a superb 86th-minute strike and there was still time for goals from Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Rashford, who made it 4-1.

"Great result and great character to come back, led by a very inspirational captain," Solskjaer told Sky Sports.

"Harry scored and leads by example," he added. "He showed good character, I am happy for him. He had a couple of difficult weeks since he last played for us.

<h2>- VAR agony -</h2>

Jurgen Klopp's champions were desperate to re-establish their authority after their 7-2 mauling against Aston Villa but were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw after Jordan Henderson's late strike was chalked off for offside.

Everton, who have not beaten Liverpool since 2010, remain three points clear of their Merseyside rivals at the top of the table after a number of controversial calls went their way at Goodison Park.

Klopp was mystified that Henderson's potential winner in added time against 10-man Everton was ruled out for a barely perceptible offside decision against Sadio Mane.

He was also at a loss to explain how Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford had not been dismissed and had not conceded an early penalty for a knee-high challenge on Virgil van Dijk.

Klopp said: "We lost one player in a situation where VAR was not involved with Virgil and maybe another one (Thiago Alcantara) in the red card situation and scored a legitimate goal which didn't count -- so obviously not our day but the performance was the performance I wanted to see."

Everton showed their new-found mettle by twice coming from behind, with Michael Keane and the prolific Dominic Calvert-Lewin cancelling out goals from Mane and Mohamed Salah.

But the pivotal moment in the match came when Van Dijk was on the receiving end of a dangerous late lunge from Pickford early in the game, which forced the Dutchman off.

However, no penalty was awarded after a VAR review because Van Dijk had been marginally offside and Pickford was lucky to avoid a red card.

Richarlison was shown a straight red card for a dangerous tackle on Thiago in the 90th minute before the VAR drama in the final seconds.

Van Dijk and Thiago both went to hospital for scans on their knee injuries after the game.

<h2>- Werner double -</h2>

&nbsp;

Chelsea looked to be in total control after cruising into a 2-0 lead against Southampton at Stamford Bridge, courtesy of new signing Timo Werner's first Premier League goals.

But a goal from Danny Ings shortly before half-time and a second-half strike from Che Adams wiped out their lead.

Frank Lampard's side rallied immediately to regain the lead, Werner teeing up Kai Havertz, only for Jannik Vestergaard to power home an added-time equaliser.

City returned to winning ways after an indifferent start to the season, courtesy of a first-half goal from Raheem Sterling, who condemned Arsenal to their seventh straight defeat in league matches between the two sides.

Bruno Fernandes atoned for a missed penalty as Manchester United blitzed Newcastle with late goals on Saturday while VAR denied Liverpool a cathartic victory against Everton on another day of breathless drama in the Premier League.

"The season started for us today. Late blitz saves Man Utd blushes as VAR denies Liverpool

The Champions League group stage kicks off on Tuesday with Bayern Munich beginning their defence of the trophy won in Lisbon in August. AFP Sport picks out some of the storylines to watch over the next few weeks:

<h2>- Messi v Ronaldo -</h2>

They are the two greatest players of their generation with 11 Ballons d'Or between them, and the two highest scorers in Champions League history. Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are now set to renew their individual rivalry when Barcelona and Juventus clash in Group G.

They have not faced off since the Portuguese superstar left Real Madrid for Juventus in 2018.

Ronaldo is currently self-isolating after testing positive for Covid-19 and will need to pass a negative test before being allowed to feature against Barca in Turin on October 28. The return at the Camp Nou is on December 8.

Both sides should advance from a group also containing Dynamo Kiev and Ferencvaros, but both Messi and Ronaldo are running out of time to win the Champions League again. Messi, now 33, has featured in four victorious campaigns, while 35-year-old Ronaldo has won it five times.

&nbsp;

<h2>- Will Man Utd get out of their group? -</h2>

Manchester United begin their campaign at Paris Saint-Germain in a repeat of their dramatic last-16 meeting in 2018-19, when the Red Devils progressed thanks to a controversial late penalty.

That was arguably the high point of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's reign as Old Trafford manager. It was his 14th win in 17 games as caretaker, and soon after he got the job permanently. But United went out to Barcelona in the quarter-finals and did not qualify for last season's Champions League.

Solskjer's first full campaign in charge saw United finish third to return to Europe's top table, but serious doubts remain about his managerial ability and they are in a tough group, with last season's semi-finalists RB Leipzig and the Turkish champions, Istanbul Basaksehir, as well as PSG.

The knives will be out for the Norwegian if they fail to make the knockout stage.

&nbsp;

<h2>- Haaland to star again? -</h2>

Erling Braut Haaland was the star of last season's Champions League before the competition was interrupted by the coronavirus pandemic.&nbsp;

The Norwegian was a sensation for Red Bull Salzburg in the group stage, scoring eight times. After moving to Borussia Dortmund in the winter he scored two more in the defeat of PSG in the last 16, first leg, although Dortmund ended up losing on aggregate.

In total Haaland scored 44 club goals last season, all before turning 20 in July. He already has 11 this season for club and country and Dortmund will hope he can help them out of a group also containing Zenit Saint Petersburg, Lazio and Club Brugge.

&nbsp;

<h2>- Atalanta: Dark horses no more -</h2>

Atalanta's run to the quarter-finals, where they suffered an agonising defeat to PSG, would have been heartwarming even had it not coincided with their home city of Bergamo being devastated during the first wave of the coronavirus pandemic.

Gian Piero Gasperini's side qualified for the last 16 despite losing their first three group games and then beat Valencia 8-4 on aggregate in their debut Champions League campaign. They also finished third in Serie A to return to Europe's elite club competition.

But Atalanta are no longer a surprise package and are probably now favourites to advance from their group along with Liverpool, and ahead of Ajax and the Danish champions, Midtjylland. Will they continue to thrive despite no longer being the dark horses?

&nbsp;

<h2>- The debutants -</h2>

Atalanta may no longer be the new boys but four teams are appearing in the group stage for the first time.&nbsp;

The most interesting first-timers are Rennes, who had a best-ever third-place finish in France a year on from winning the French Cup. In Julien Stephan they have one of Europe's best young coaches, while midfielder Eduardo Camavinga is possibly the hottest young prospect in world football. They are in a difficult group, though, with Chelsea, Sevilla and another newcomer in Russian side Krasnodar.

Midtjylland will have it tough up against Liverpool, Atalanta and Ajax. Meanwhile, after breaking up the dominance of the Istanbul giants in Turkey, Basaksehir will hope to cause problems for PSG, Manchester United and Leipzig.

After the match, Ferguson said that dismissing Warner at the start of Super Over was his favourite dismissal of the day. He further hailed skipper Eoin Morgan to keep his calm while adding he decided to go with what he did throughout the game.

“I think getting David Warner out especially at the start of the super over [was my favourite wicket]. It's great having Morgs at the top off the mark with his calmness and of course I had my plan which was working throughout the game. Look we'll take this win and enjoy tonight, it was a very good win on a tough wicket. It was nice to put the icing on the cake after the batsmen's effort,” Ferguson said after collecting the Man of the Match award.

Kolkata Knight Riders on Sunday defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad in Super Over at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi as the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/ipl">Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020</a> continues to throw nerve-racking moments.&nbsp;

Sunrisers Hyderabad, surprisingly chose to field first after winning the toss in Abu Dhabi, which has favoured team batting first. KKR were off to a decent start in the powerplay but lost Rahul Tripathi soon. Shubman Gill and Nitish Rana played handy knocks of 36 and 29 respectively but failed to make it big. Andre Russell’s poor form continued for KKR in IPL 2020 as the Windies brute was caught for 9.

Chennai Super Kings opted for Ravindra Jadeja to bowl the last over against Delhi Capitals in the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/ipl">Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020</a> on Saturday as it was revealed that Dwayne Bravo went off the field after suffering an injury. Bravo was the final over option for CSK but Dhoni had to go with Jadeja as the Windies all-rounder was unavailable to bowl.&nbsp;

CSK head coach Stephen Fleming has revealed the extent of Bravo’s injury while revealing that it is serious enough to keep him out for a few days or couple of weeks. Fleming further said that Bravo was disappointed that he wasn’t able to bowl the final over.&nbsp;

"He (Bravo) seems to have a right groin injury, obviously it was serious enough to keep him from coming back to the field, he is just really disappointed that he was not able to bowl the final over, that's pretty much for what he is in the team for. He would have to be reassessed going forward, at this stage, you would imagine that it would take a few days or a couple of weeks,” Fleming said.

Jadeja was left exposed against two left-handers – Axar Patel and Shikhar Dhawan – as DC finished off the match with two massive sixes to bag another win in IPL 2020.

"Unfortunately Dwayne Bravo got injured so he could not bowl the last over, naturally he is a death bowler, that's the way our season has been going, we are having challenges thrown at us. Jadeja was not planned to bowl at the death, but with Bravo getting injured, we did not have any other option. We did well to create a situation where it could have worked for us but we have to keep working hard and turn it around," Fleming said at the post-match press conference.

IPL 2020, SRH vs KKR Preview: Fourth spot for grabs as Hyderabad take on Kolkata

Manchester City forward Sergio Aguero on Saturday came into the spotlight not due to his goal-scoring prowess but for his behavior on the field as he was heavily criticized on social media for putting his arm on the shoulder of female assistant referee Sian Massey-Ellis during Man City’s 1-0 win over Arsenal.

Aguero argued with Massey on the sidelines over a throw-in call which went against him early in the second of the Premier League encounter at the Etihad Stadium. After disputing the throw-in call, Aguero briefly put his arm around the female assistant referee’s shoulder as she began to walk away.

While it was Aguero’s first match since June after the knee surgery, the Argentine found himself as the focal topic on social media with his former team-mate Micah Richards saying on Sky Sports that Aguero should “know better”. Many bashed Aguero while some defended him saying that it is the nature of the game and the Argentine didn't have any ill-intention behind it.

Under rules introduced in 2016, players can be warned or sent off for touching match officials depending on the nature of incident. While players have been spotted putting their arms on match officials, referees usually take the context and intention before putting it down in their match report which goes to the FA.&nbsp;

Massey had every right to send Aguero off had she found any malice in Aguero’s move and more importantly, she could have written it down in her match report. However, nothing of that sort is being reported.&nbsp;

Sunil Narine's bowling action gets green signal, taken off IPL warning list

Real Madrid and Barcelona will each head into the Clasico next weekend on the back of a defeat after La Liga's two title favourites were punished for slack performances on Saturday.

Zinedine Zidane made four substitutions at half-time but could not spark a lethargic Madrid into life as his team fell 1-0 at home to newly-promoted Cadiz.&nbsp;

Then two hours later on the opposite side of the city, Ronald Koeman tasted his first competitive loss as coach of Barcelona as they followed Madrid's example by being beaten 1-0 by Getafe at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez.

Madrid's was perhaps the more concerning display, the reigning champions managing just two shots on target against Cadiz, who could have scored more after Anthony Lozano's early strike.&nbsp;

But Barca were not much better, with Lionel Messi strangely quiet and the team failing to rebound after Jaime Mata's penalty gave Getafe the lead in the second half.

For Madrid, there was an injury concern too as Sergio Ramos spent the second half in the stands with ice strapped around his left knee.&nbsp;

Madrid said the injury was not serious but it puts in doubt Ramos' involvement in their first Champions League game against Shakhtar Donetsk on Wednesday, as well the Clasico three days later.&nbsp;

"Hopefully it's minor, said Zidane. "Tomorrow we'll see what he has done."

A prolonged absence for Ramos would cap a deflating night for the champions, whose dreary display certainly hands an early boost to their title rivals.&nbsp;

Even if Barcelona were unable to capitalise, Atletico Madrid had earlier beaten Celta Vigo 2-0, with Luis Suarez opening the scoring at Balaidos.

&nbsp;

<h2>- 'No excuses' -</h2>

"There is no explanation," said Zidane. "If they scored two or three goals in the first half, we couldn't have complained. There are no excuses."

This is Cadiz's first season in the top flight in 14 years and their first victory over Real Madrid in 29. Their reward is second place in the table, denied top spot by their opponents only due to goal difference.&nbsp;

Isco, Luka Modric and Lucas Vazquez were the other three players to be hauled off by Zidane, who was reacting to a particularly poor display from his side in the first half.&nbsp;

Eder Militao, Casemiro, Fede Valverde and Marco Asensio came on while a surprised-looking Toni Kroos also departed in the second period, replaced by Luka Jovic.&nbsp;

But Cadiz could have been three up in the first quarter of an hour as Ramos prevented Alvaro Negredo's finish from rolling in before Negredo created the opener.&nbsp;

His cushioned header put through Lozano, who skipped beyond Madrid's sleepy defence and poked over the onrushing Thibaut Courtois.&nbsp;

Madrid might have equalised in the second half as Vinicius Junior headed wide of an open goal and Karim Benzema rattled the crossbar with a long-range shot. But Cadiz were not overly troubled.&nbsp;

Getafe were never really hanging on either, even if Barcelona went close to an equaliser, Messi hitting the post and then driving a loose ball wide in injury-time. Antoine Griezmann also ballooned over when put through in the first half.&nbsp;

Getafe's Cucho Hernandez also hit the bar after a clumsy challenge from Frenkie de Jong on Djene Dakonham gave Mata his chance.

Earlier, Suarez partnered Diego Costa for the first time and scored as Atletico Madrid beat struggling Celta Vigo.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

<h2>- 'Like the mix' -</h2>

But the Suarez-Costa combination came to an early end as Costa was forced off injured in the second half.&nbsp;

"I liked the mix of the two," said Diego Simeone. "Their characteristics mean they can play together. They give us strength and presence and personality in the penalty area.&nbsp;It's one of the options the team has."

Sitting in the stands, Costa was seen with his face in his hands and he seems likely now to miss Atletico's Champions League opener at Bayern Munich on Wednesday.&nbsp;

Suarez had earlier finished off a sweeping move down the left before Yannick Carrasco made sure of the victory in injury-time, heading in after Joao Felix's effort came back off the crossbar.

There was also a debut for Lucas Torreira, the Uruguayan signed on loan from Arsenal, who was energetic and tidy in central midfield, despite feeling some cramp late on.

Atletico climb to fourth, two points behind Real Madrid and one ahead of Barcelona. Celta, meanwhile, have managed only one win from their first six games and sit 13th.&nbsp;

Darren Bravo and Shimron Hetmyer&nbsp;were named Friday in the West Indies squad for a proposed two-Test series in New Zealand, having turned down invitations for the tour of England earlier this year.

The top-order batsmen both opted out of the Test series against England in July that marked the return of international cricket following the coronavirus shutdown.&nbsp;

Bravo and Hetmyer have been recalled along with fast-bowling all-rounder Keemo Paul, who also skipped the England tour, as part of a 15-man squad backed up by six reserve players.

Hetmyer and Paul were also included in the T20 squad for a three-match series that precedes the two Tests.

West Indies are due to play the first Test in Hamilton from December 3-7. The second is scheduled for Wellington from December 11-15.

Both series are subject to clearance from the two teams' cricket boards and the New Zealand government.&nbsp;

"The return of Darren Bravo, Shimron Hetmyer and Keemo Paul will bolster the team," said West Indies chief selector Roger Harper.

"I expect that Darren will solidify the top-order, hopefully making it more productive, while Shimron gives the squad more options in the middle-order and it is another opportunity for him to show how good a player he is.&nbsp;

"Keemo provides another wicket taking seam option."

All-rounder Andre Russell and top-order batsmen Lendl Simmons and Evin Lewis have chosen not to participate in the tour.

Shai Hope was omitted from the Test squad following a sustained poor run of form. He scored just 105 runs in six innings in three Tests against England.

"Shai is a player who I think has a tremendous future in Test cricket but at the moment he needs to reorganise his Test match game and get his batting in the longest version, back to its best," said Harper.

Darren Bravo and Shimron Hetmyer were named Friday in the West Indies squad for a proposed two-Test series in New Zealand, having turned down invitations for the tour of England earlier this year. The top-order batsmen both opted out of the Test series against England in July that marked the return of international cricket following the coronavirus shutdown. Both series are subject to clearance from the two teams' cricket boards and the New Zealand government. "The return of Darren Bravo, Shimron Hetmyer and Keemo Paul will bolster the team," said West Indies chief selector Roger Harper. "I expect that Darren will solidify the top-order, hopefully making it more productive, while Shimron gives the squad more options in the middle-order and it is another opportunity for him to show how good a player he is. "Keemo provides another wicket taking seam option." All-rounder Andre Russell and top-order batsmen Lendl Simmons and Evin Lewis have chosen not to participate in the tour. Britain's Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) on Thursday said it had charged a man in connection with the death of Argentine footballer Emiliano Sala in a light aircraft crash last year.

"The UK Civil Aviation Authority has commenced a prosecution of David Henderson for offences associated with the fatal light aircraft accident over the English Channel in January 2019," said CAA director Richard Stephenson in a statement published on the regulator's website.

"It will be inappropriate for the CAA to say anything further until the case is concluded."

Henderson, 66, appeared at Cardiff Magistrates' Court on September 28 and was bailed to appear at Cardiff Crown Court on October 26.

Sala's mother, Mercedes Taffarel, welcomed the news, but was "disappointed that it has today resulted in what may be a further significant delay to the inquest into Emiliano's death," according to her legal firm &nbsp;Hickman and Rose.

"His mother remains desperate to know the full truth about how this could have been allowed to happen, and urges the CAA to proceed with its criminal prosecution as swiftly as possible, so an inquest can be held to establish this, and that similar deaths are prevented," said Daniel Machover from Hickman and Rose.

Sala, 28, died when the plane carrying him and pilot David Ibbotson came down in the Channel on January 21, just days after he had joined Cardiff City from Nantes.

He had been Cardiff's record signing after a fee of £15 million ($19 million) was agreed with Nantes during the January transfer window.

After travelling to Cardiff to complete the deal, Sala returned to France to collect belongings and bid farewell to his teammates.

It was on his return to the Welsh capital to take part in his first training session that the tragedy occurred.

Initial search operations for the player and pilot were suspended in the days after the single-engine Piper Malibu plane went missing.

However, a crowdfunding effort supported by thousands of donations, including from football stars such as Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe, helped launch a private search.

That specialised search saw Sala's body recovered from the wreckage in February but Ibbotson's body has not been found.

Two months after Sala's body was discovered, his father Horacio Sala died of a heart attack in Argentina.

British air accident investigators in March concluded Ibbotson was not licensed to fly the plane or at night, and that he lost control and flew too fast as he tried to avoid bad weather.

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch said both the pilot and Sala were affected by carbon monoxide poisoning before the crash.

Jurgen Klopp says football can help bring people together in tough times as Liverpool gear up to face Everton on Saturday in a city placed under tough coronavirus rules.

Klopp's champions travel to face Carlo Ancelotti's Premier League leaders for a second Merseyside derby behind closed doors in four months.

Liverpool has been placed under the "very high" alert level of the British government's new three-tier system to check the spread of Covid-19.

Under the strict rules many pubs and bars are closed and people are not allowed to socialise with anybody beyond those they live with.

The Liverpool squad itself has been hit in recent weeks, with Sadio Mane and Thiago Alcantara testing positive.

"I like to think that here football is always a massive point in this city," said Klopp. "I think months ago we discussed 'is football really necessary, does football play a role in society?'

"Obviously from a subjective point of view I was pretty sure it does.

"Usually when bad things happen, this city comes really together and tries to make the best of it. That is what we try from a football point of view for sure.&nbsp;

"I think if we played Man City now on the weekend it would have the same importance, it's just football is an important thing.

"It's just now because we are both clubs from the city, the whole city is united and will watch one football game, not two."

Klopp hopes derby unites virus-hit Liverpool

Gareth Bale is expected to make his second Tottenham debut against West Ham on Sunday, but Jose Mourinho claims even the Welsh star's place is not guaranteed as he revels in the squad depth at his disposal.

Bale has returned to north London on a season-long loan from Real Madrid after seven years of highs and lows since joining the Spanish giants for a then world-record fee.

He scored in two Champions League finals as Madrid won the competition four times in his first five seasons.

But Bale's performances also attracted plenty of criticism, while he struggled with injuries and the adaptation to life in Spain.

Injury has also delayed his Tottenham return on the field, but the familiar surroundings have made the 31-year-old more relaxed after his Madrid misery and he has been pictured in the stands supporting his new team-mates.

Mourinho said on Friday that Sergio Reguilon, who also moved from Madrid to Spurs last month, commented that Bale looks a "different guy" from the shy figure in the Spanish capital.

But questions remain over whether he can emulate the success of his first spell with Tottenham, when he developed into one of the world's best.

In the final season before his big move, Bale scored 26 goals but it still was not enough to secure a place in the Champions League as Andre Villas-Boas's side finished fifth.

During his time in Spain, Spurs became Champions League regulars, reaching the final for the first time in 2019.

This season is the first in five years Tottenham are not in Europe's top club competition, but a Champions League return is the least they expect after bringing back Bale to form a potentially thrilling front three alongside Harry Kane and Son Heung-min.

Kane and Son have combined spectacularly to thrash Manchester United 6-1 and Southampton 5-2 already this season.

Injuries to both hampered Spurs' chances of making the top four last season, but Mourinho is confident he now has the squad to challenge on multiple fronts.

&nbsp;

<h2>- Winning mentality -</h2>

&nbsp;

Despite the club's rise in recent years, Tottenham have still not won a trophy since 2008.

"We have a squad where every player has to fight a lot and play very well to deserve a place in the team," said Mourinho.

"The squad is so good, so strong. We have so many options that I refuse to say this player is a first choice.

"I can feel even in the players this feeling I love. They are happy but they are worried.&nbsp;

"They are happy that the squad is good, that people are coming to make the squad better. But at the same time they are worried about themselves, 'am I going to play or not going to play?' This is the kind of feeling you have in the top teams and we are having that now."

Bale has plenty of experience of those demands from his time at Madrid, which is regarded as bittersweet at best despite winning 13 trophies.

"By going to Madrid, winning trophies and going far with the national team I feel like I have that winning mentality of how to win trophies," Bale said on his return.

"You don't realise it until you're there and in those situations in finals, knowing how to deal with the situation, the nerves, the pressure.

"That all goes with experience, so hopefully I can bring that to the dressing room, bring a bit more belief to everybody that we can win a trophy.

"The target is to do that this season. Not to just win one but to be fighting on every front possible."

AB de Villiers was the difference between two sides as Royal Challengers Bangalore defeated Rajasthan Royals by seven wickets in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020. While Rajasthan Royals posted a highly competitive total of 177/6 in 20 overs courtesy some great batting by Robin Uthappa and Steve Smith but it was de Villiers who took the game away from RR single-handedly with his incredible knock.

When RCB were struggling to even get close to RR’s total of 177, AB de Villiers brought his ‘A-game’ and smoked 55 not-out off 22 deliveries laced by six 6s and a boundary. He was supported well by Gurkeerat Singh Mann but the former South African captain stole the show.&nbsp;

“Exteremly happy. Thought we didn't bowl well to be honest. Leaked some silly things. Couple of no balls which Yuzi doesn't do. But Virat and I spoke about it, the need to reset. Proud of my performances: 'Superman' AB de Villiers reflect on his terrific form in IPL 2020

Indian Premier League (IPL) is known as a platform where ‘talent meets opportunity’. While many youngsters have used the platform to improve their game and gain the much-needed experience to take their talent a notch-above, many crumble under the sheer pressure and demand of arguably the best T20 tournament in the world.

One player, who has impressed in IPL is Kings XI Punjab’s left-arm seamer Arshdeep Singh, who made his debut for the franchise in 2019, and has continued to impress with his control, variations while holding his nerves in pressure situations.&nbsp;

In an exclusive interview with WION’s Subhayan Chakraborty, Kings XI Punjab pacer Arshdeep Singh spoke about sharing the dressing room with some of the biggest names in world cricket, KL Rahul’s captaincy, learning from Anil Kumble and Charl Langeveldt, bowling to Andre Russell and more.&nbsp;

Arshdeep has been a welcome addition to KXIP’s bowling unit in IPL 2020 and the youngster has made headlines by bowling crucial overs for the Punjab outfit while picking up four wickets in three matches. He further boasts an eye-catching economy of 7.80.&nbsp;

After having a successful trial in 2019, Arshdeep impressed the KXIP staff and scouts with his execution in death overs and was picked up by the franchise in the IPL 2019 auction. Still carving his way to the top, Arshdeep is steadily becoming a household name as he terms the KXIP franchise as a “family”. The 21-year-old is beaming with confidence while putting up some impressive numbers for his side in IPL 2020.

“It is always a special feeling playing in the IPL and for Kings XI Punjab. Honestly, it is no less than a family and I have always felt comfortable playing for this franchise,” Arshdeep told WION in an exclusive interview.

“It’s all about confidence, I think. Last season, I was new to the tournament and different situations this tournament puts you in but this season, it doesn’t feel like an alien situation and I feel I belong to this competition. I have backed my abilities and continue to do so,” the member of Under-19 World Cup 2018 added.

<img alt="Arshdeep Singh" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="c21b50ad-1fa7-4c9c-a574-6d89be4776e5" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/Ej9xVZ3VoAAzth5.jpg" />

Arshdeep has bowled in some crunch situations in the 13th edition of IPL but has left everyone impressed with the maturity he has shown with the ball.

“The plan has been to keep things simple. In the team meetings, with coach and support staff of the team, the talk is always to keep things simple and execute it. And you can see that it has come out for me well so far in this tournament.”

The likes of Mandeep Singh and Ravi Bishnoi have already hailed the influence of Anil Kumble in the dressing room and how the former Indian skipper backs his players to bring confidence factor into the play. When asked about Anil Kumble and bowling coach Charl Langeveldt, Arshdeep spoke in similar lines as he heaped praise on the coaching staff while explaining how they give him and other players the freedom to come up with their own plans.

“Both (Anil Kumble and Charl Langeveldt) have been legends of the game at their time. I am trying to pick their brains as much as possible. The experience they share is always helpful for me and other players as well. Charl just asks me to back my execution and talent and gives me the freedom to bowl according my comfort. And Anil sir is so helpful with everything. He always tells me to come to approach them or the captain and talk to them about whatever I am feeling about my bowling plans and gives me a free hand in what I want to do in a particular match or situation,” Arshdeep said.

<img alt="Arshdeep Singh" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="d875fc18-a228-4b21-98af-06d10578a093" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/EkMuiE3XgAAedYe.jpg" />

KXIP added some big names to their squad for IPL 2020 with the likes of Sheldon Cottrell, Jimmy Neesham, Chris Jordan among many others joining in. The KXIP dressing room boasts some huge names in the world of cricket. For Arshdeep, it is simple. Just keep picking their brains and keep learning.&nbsp;

“It is a big boost for me as I have been learning plenty of things from these guys. They might not enjoy my company that much as I always keep on asking questions” (laughs) but I make sure that I take everything from them”

KXIP also have some good domestic talent in their ranks. While there is always competition for places within the team, Arshdeep is of the view that regardless of whoever finds his name in the playing XI or in the bench, the mantra is to keep backing the team.

“There is a healthy competition. It is really good to have great bunch of youngsters in the squad. We can share a laugh and talk about things. Some of us know each other from under-19 days. It is about enjoying each other’s company and not about who will play or who will sit out. We just back each other regardless of whoever play”

Arshdeep made a massive impact in KXIP’s match against KKR where he conceded just 25 runs off his four-over quota while sending Andre Russell packing in the 19th over. He also had a maiden in his spell as the youngster stunned the KKR batting unit with his impeccable execution of wider deliveries at an almost perfect angle. His celebration, after dismissing Russell summed it up all.

“No one would love to bowl to Andre (laughs). But we planned about Andre a lot in the meeting with coaching staff and KL. We always plan in-depth when facing the likes of AB de Villiers or Andre Russell or other big names in T20 cricket. The plan was to keep it simple and back our plans and when the execution comes off perfectly, it feels good.

“The feeling of picking any wicket is great. The celebration came out naturally due to the heat of Abu Dhabi (laughs). But on a serious note, it was a big wicket for the team and of course, myself. So it was pure passion, you can say. It was great to get that wicket,” Arshdeep explained.

<img alt="Arshdeep Singh" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="e540e3c9-1d3b-465d-b34f-0bb2e93c3685" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/Ej-KuAVXsAgQn_4.jpg" />

The most important thing for a youngster is to grasp everything in a bid to become better. While Arshdeep has shown great signs of improvement, he knows that players lose focus too early and doesn’t want to make the same mistake.

“My biggest learning has been that many lose their focus when they come to IPL and the environment but main thing is to keep yourself focused. Many people try too many things in IPL but for me, it is about backing my talent and skill-set," said the southpaw.

Irfan Pathan’s first-over hat-trick against Pakistan in 2006 made Arshdeep fall in love with his bowling. While Wasim Akram is the go-to favourite for all the pacers, the KXIP youngster is closely keeping a tab on how Mitchell Starc bowls and fires in those yorkers.

“When I didn’t start playing, I used to follow Irfan Pathan. His hat-trick against Pakistan made me fall in love with his bowling. And I loved watching Wasim Akram but now I am following Mitchell Starc, the yorkers he fires in are what I love the most.”

KXIP didn’t get off to the best of starts as they lost a few close matches. They aren’t in the best of position in the points table. However, things change quickly in the world of cricket and IPL is the pinnacle of twist and turns. Arshdeep thanked all the KXIP fans for supporting them while adding that they are ready to prove that they can do much better than what they did in the first phase of IPL.

“A huge thank you from me and the Kings XI Punjab family for supporting us. We are not in the best place in the points table but keep supporting us throughout our journey. A big thank you to all of you. Keep believing in us and I am sure we will prove we are better than what the points table is showing. Thank you supporting us.”

One player, who has impressed in IPL is Kings XI Punjab’s left-arm seamer Arshdeep Singh, who made his debut for the franchise in 2019, and has continued to impress with his control, variations while holding his nerves in pressure situations. In an exclusive interview with WION’s Subhayan Chakraborty, Kings XI Punjab pacer Arshdeep Singh spoke about sharing the dressing room with some of the biggest names in world cricket, KL Rahul’s captaincy, learning from Anil Kumble and Charl Langeveldt, bowling to Andre Russell and more. Arshdeep has been a welcome addition to KXIP’s bowling unit in IPL 2020 and the youngster has made headlines by bowling crucial overs for the Punjab outfit while picking up four wickets in three matches. He further boasts an eye-catching economy of 7.80. ALSO READ: Exclusive - Salutes, Kings XI Punjab and IPL dream with Sheldon Cottrell “It is always a special feeling playing in the IPL and for Kings XI Punjab. Arshdeep has bowled in some crunch situations in the 13th edition of IPL but has left everyone impressed with the maturity he has shown with the ball. “The plan has been to keep things simple. In the team meetings, with coach and support staff of the team, the talk is always to keep things simple and execute it. And you can see that it has come out for me well so far in this tournament.” The likes of Mandeep Singh and Ravi Bishnoi have already hailed the influence of Anil Kumble in the dressing room and how the former Indian skipper backs his players to bring confidence factor into the play. When asked about Anil Kumble and bowling coach Charl Langeveldt, Arshdeep spoke in similar lines as he heaped praise on the coaching staff while explaining how they give him and other players the freedom to come up with their own plans. KXIP added some big names to their squad for IPL 2020 with the likes of Sheldon Cottrell, Jimmy Neesham, Chris Jordan among many others joining in. The KXIP dressing room boasts some huge names in the world of cricket. For Arshdeep, it is simple. Just keep picking their brains and keep learning. “It is a big boost for me as I have been learning plenty of things from these guys. They might not enjoy my company that much as I always keep on asking questions” (laughs) but I make sure that I take everything from them” KXIP also have some good domestic talent in their ranks. While there is always competition for places within the team, Arshdeep is of the view that regardless of whoever finds his name in the playing XI or in the bench, the mantra is to keep backing the team. ALSO READ: Exclusive - Excited to play for Kings XI Punjab and under KL Rahul: Ishan Porel “There is a healthy competition. It is really good to have great bunch of youngsters in the squad. We can share a laugh and talk about things. Some of us know each other from under-19 days. It is about enjoying each other’s company and not about who will play or who will sit out. We just back each other regardless of whoever play” Arshdeep made a massive impact in KXIP’s match against KKR where he conceded just 25 runs off his four-over quota while sending Andre Russell packing in the 19th over. And I loved watching Wasim Akram but now I am following Mitchell Starc, the yorkers he fires in are what I love the most.” KXIP didn’t get off to the best of starts as they lost a few close matches. IPL 2020, RR vs RCB Preview: Battle for playoffs gains pace as Royals take on Kohli and Co.

Kolkata Knight Riders, under the new leadership of Eoin Morgan, suffered a crushing eight-wicket defeat to Mumbai Indians in Abu Dhabi on Friday but wicket-keeper Quinton de Kock has said that the Mumbai outfit is still not thinking about playoffs and are taking it one game at a time.

Mumbai Indians are sitting atop the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/ipl">Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020</a> points table with 12 points to their name after eight matches. With MI defeating KKR yet again in IPL courtesy, de Kock’s splendid knock of 78 not-out.&nbsp;

"We did not plan much before this game, we know what are our strengths, it is a matter of doing what we have been doing, in our team we have a lot of experience and it is a matter of just doing the things on the field," said de Kock during the post-match press conference.&nbsp;

"The preparations for playoffs have not started yet, it is about taking one game at a time, whatever happens, we have to keep it simple and we need to play to our strengths. Whether we qualify for the playoffs or not, that is not in our hands but playing good cricket is something we can control," he added.&nbsp;

KKR, batting first, posted a score of 148/5 in 20 overs after Pat Cummins and Eoin Morgan scored 53 and 39 respectively after finding themselves at 61/5 at one stage. Rahul Chahar made a massive impact by dismissing Shubman Gill and Dinesh Karthik in consecutive deliveries.&nbsp;

"I think the process is that we have backed Rahul Chahar. He backs himself too and that is a key in a player. He knows his talent and he knows if he has a bad game, he will come back stronger and we know that too. As a player, we can just back other players," de Kock said.&nbsp;

IPL 2020: Mumbai Indians not thinking about playoffs yet: Quinton de Kock

Kolkata Knight Riders on Friday dropped a huge surprise as they announced, just hours before their <a href="https://www.wionews.com/ipl">Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020</a> match against Mumbai Indians, that Dinesh Karthik has stepped down from captaincy with the duty to lead the side now being with Eoin Morgan.&nbsp;

While Karthik’s sudden decision that he wants to focus more on his batting came as a big surprise, moreover when KKR were lying at fourth spot in the points table, former KKR captain Gautam Gambhir has said that he was a bit surprised by the decision while adding the franchise management should have named Morgan as the captain of the side from the start rather than making a mid-season change.

“Cricket is not about relationships, it’s about performances and honestly, I don’t think Morgan can change a lot of things. He could’ve changed a lot of things had he captained from the start of the tournament. No one changes during the middle of the tournament. It’s nice to have a good relationship between the coach and the captain,” Gambhir said on Star Sports.

“Little surprised. He’s obviously leading KKR for the last 2 and a half years. You don’t do it in the middle of the season. KKR is not in that bad a position that someone needs to change a captain, so yeah little bit surprised,” he added.

"If KKR wanted to make this change, they should have done it at the start of the competition. If you are talking so much about a World Cup-winning captain being there in your team puts pressure on someone like Dinesh Karthik then why not just give it to Morgan straightaway, why put so much pressure on Karthik?

Premier League clubs on Wednesday rejected plans put forward by Liverpool and Manchester United for radical changes to the league’s structures and finances and said they would conduct their own review of the game.

The “Project Big Picture” proposals would have seen an increase in funds for the 72 clubs in the Football League (EFL) but also include special voting rights for the biggest clubs in the Premier League and a reduction of teams in the top flight from 20 to 18.

The plan has been fronted by EFL chairman Rick Parry and would have included a 250 million-pound ($325.85 million) bail-out for his clubs, who face acute financial issues due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

But at a meeting on Wednesday of all 20 Premier League clubs, the plans were rejected with a separate, broader-based review by the entire league initiated and a more limited bail-out for lower division clubs.

“All 20 Premier League clubs today unanimously agreed that Project Big Picture will not be endorsed or pursued by the Premier League, or The FA,” the league said in a statement.

“Further, Premier League Shareholders agreed to work together as a 20-club collective on a strategic plan for the future structures and financing of English football, consulting with all stakeholders to ensure a vibrant, competitive and sustainable football pyramid.”

The process will include the FA, the UK government and the EFL, added the statement.

<h2>RESCUE PACKAGE</h2>

The Premier League also said it had agreed to offer a rescue package to League One and League Two (third and fourth tier) clubs.

“This offer will consist of grants and interest-free loans totalling a further 50 million pounds on top of the £27.2m solidarity payments already advanced to League One and League Two this year, making a total of 77.2 million pounds,” the statement said.

“Discussions will also continue with the EFL regarding Championship clubs’ financial needs. This addresses Government concerns about lower league clubs’ financial fragility.”

The UK government’s Culture Minister Oliver Dowden, who is responsible for sport, has been urging the wealthier clubs to help out the lower league teams and said the offer was a “good start”.

“I urge them to work together and stay focused on helping clubs through the crisis,” he said.

Despite the huge attention focused on the proposals, which were leaked on Sunday, neither of the two American owners, Liverpool’s John W Henry or Manchester United’s Joel Glazer, took part in the online meeting, leaving their executives to represent them.

Premier League CEO Richard Masters said the meeting had been “candid, constructive, positive in the end”.

Although FA chairman Greg Clarke said on Tuesday that the Project instigators had talked about a possible breakaway from the Premier League, Masters said he had heard no such threats.

“I don’t think anybody has been talking about breaking away. So I want to make that clear,” he said.

Feelings have been running high among owners and officials from the Premier League’s smaller clubs, some of whom believe the top teams tried to railroad them.

“Whilst there has been a lot of things said and done, a lot of speculation over the last four days, I don’t think it’s irreparably damaged the Premier League,” Masters said.

The EFL, whose clubs had been largely in support of Project Big Picture given the promise of increased funds including a 250 million-pound rescue fund said it would meet with all its 72 clubs on Thursday to discuss the new bail-out offer.

“As we have maintained across the past 72 hours, there is a significant issue facing the English footballing Pyramid and therefore it is encouraging that there is an acknowledgment that a review of the current status quo is required,” the EFL said in a statement.

“The EFL welcomes the opportunity to contribute to any wider debate with colleagues across the game as we seek to finally address impossible economic pressures and deliver on the objective of having a sustainable EFL in the long-term.”

Vietnam’s first Formula One grand prix has been officially cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, organisers said on Friday.

The Vietnamese Grand Prix was originally scheduled to take place in April on the streets of Hanoi as the third race of the season, but sources told Reuters in March that it was under threat.

“This has been an extremely difficult but necessary decision to reach in view of the continued uncertainty caused by the global coronavirus pandemic,” Vietnam Grand Prix Corp said in an emailed statement, adding that it would refund all tickets sold.

Vietnam has recorded over 1,110 COVID-19 infections, with 35 deaths, Ministry of Health data showed.

The start of the Formula One season was pushed back to July from March due to the pandemic, with extensive changes made to the 2020 calendar.

The total number of races was cut to 17 from the record 22 originally envisaged, with Vietnam becoming the 13th race from the original calendar to be axed this year.

Hanoi city authorities had hoped to hold the race in November, but Vietnam Grand Prix Corp Chief Executive Le Ngoc Chi said on Friday that cancellation emerged as the only option after a review of safety criteria.

Formula One only finalised its 2020 calendar in August, following six rounds of racing.

The 13 races announced before the final calendar was made public were all in Europe, after all four of the season’s races in the Americas were scrapped.

In its August announcement, Formula One cancelled the Chinese Grand Prix, while adding four more races - one in Turkey, two in Bahrain and one in Abu Dhabi - in the last two months of the year.

Vietnam cancels 2020 F1 race due to COVID-19 pandemic

Chris Gayle announced he was ready to shine in the 2020 Indian Premier League with a crucial half-century for the Kings XI Punjab in his maiden innings on Thursday, having missed the first half of the campaign due to selection issues and sickness.

Chris Gayle announced he was ready to shine in the 2020 Indian Premier League with a crucial half-century for the Kings XI Punjab in his maiden innings on Thursday, having missed the first half of the campaign due to selection issues and sickness. The former West Indies captain, 41, is one of the most successful batsmen in the Twenty20 format but before Thursday he was unable to make the team this season, which is being played in the United Arab Emirates due to concern about the coronavirus pandemic in India. The self-proclaimed “Universe Boss” struck five sixes in his 45-ball 53 before he was run out on the penultimate ball with the scores tied on 171 against Virat Kohli’s Royal Challengers Bangalore. There was some drama in the last over with leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal conceding one run in five balls but Gayle’s compatriot, Nicholas Pooran, hit a six on the last to hand bottom-placed Punjab their second win in eight matches. “Come on man, it is the Universe Boss batting, how can I be nervous? Maybe I gave you a heart attack,” Gayle, who pointed at “The Boss” sticker on his bat after reaching fifty, told the broadcaster about the final-over drama. “I thought I had it in the bag but strange things happen in cricket. It was a good innings, my first innings and now I can finish the IPL in 2020 and make myself available for 2021. I can get out of the bubble now and go. “It was important to keep fit. I don’t want to be on the bench but I was enjoying it. I was actually beginning to get more fitter, get the six-pack going, the beach body going.” It was an unusual position for Gayle to bat at number three as the powerful left-hander has mostly been an opener. He took time to adjust but made up for his slow start with lofty hits later. “Team asked me to do a job, I deliver. It wasn’t an issue,” he said.

'Universe Boss' Gayle ready to rock after strong start in IPL

Liverpool face Premier League pacesetters Everton this weekend determined to prove their 7-2 drubbing by Aston Villa was just a bizarre blip while misfiring Manchester United could slip into the relegation zone.

The Merseyside derby kicks off the Premier League action on Saturday after the international break, with Manchester City's match against Arsenal also catching the eye.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be desperate to turn around Manchester United's fortunes at Newcastle after their 6-1 humbling by Tottenham.

AFP Sport looks at some of the main talking points ahead of the action.

&nbsp;

<h2>Can Everton end Liverpool hoodoo?</h2>

Everton have been rivals to Liverpool in name only for the past decade, without a win against their near-neighbours since 2010.

But the Goodison Park club are top of the table with four wins out of four and Jurgen Klopp will not be relishing the short trip across Stanley Park.

The champions are smarting from their pummelling at Villa, which followed impressive wins against Chelsea and Arsenal, and it will be the defence that is giving the German boss his biggest headache.

Liverpool have conceded 11 goals in the Premier League so far -- only West Brom have conceded more (13) -- and they are coming up against the Premier League's joint top-scorer in Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who has six goals.

The forward, who scored for England on his debut last week, is quick to praise fellow attackers James Rodriguez and Richarlison.

"I demand high standards from myself every day," he told Everton TV. "I continue to work hard, like I always have, to get into this position. I am just grateful the quality behind me is producing the opportunities for me to score the goals."

&nbsp;

<h2>Man Utd must stop rot</h2>

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer described his side's 6-1 defeat at home to Tottenham as the "worst day" in his career as a Manchester United player or manager.

United are just three points above the relegation zone after shipping 11 goals in their three matches so far and their confidence looks to be in tatters.

The question until recently was who would partner Harry Maguire at the back but the world's most expensive defender is himself enduring a horror season on and off the pitch.

The central defender's latest low point was his red card during England's 1-0 defeat to Denmark in the Nations League on Wednesday.

Left-back Luke Shaw, whose place is under threat from the arrival of Alex Telles, urged United to tighten up.

"We need to be clinical and, especially at the back, we need to be more solid," Shaw said. "Not just as a backline but throughout the whole team, a bit more defensively solid and a bit more compact."

&nbsp;

<h2>Spurs' feelgood factor</h2>

Jose Mourinho's Tottenham started the season with a disappointing Premier League defeat against Everton but they are unbeaten since then despite a hectic schedule leading up to the international break.

Their seismic victory at Old Trafford brought an end to a sequence of eight matches in 22 days as Spurs reached the League Cup quarter-finals and qualified for the Europa League group stage.

Lucas Moura says Tottenham are keen to pick up where they left off.

"We need to start the new month in the same way, with the same fighting spirit," he said. "I'm very positive. I think we are building a very strong squad and we can dream of big things this season, that's our objective."

&nbsp;

<h2>Villa meet Leicester in summit clash</h2>

When Aston Villa escaped relegation on the final day of the 2019/20 season, few would have expected them to be second in the table, with three wins out of three, in mid-October.

Defender Ezri Konsa is confident they can maintain that flying start against Leicester, who are just behind Villa on goal difference.

"It's been a great start for us," he said. "We've carried on our form from last season, and we need to keep going and keep the focus on ourselves.

"The chemistry in the squad has gone up another level and we keep building on that in training."

Liverpool face Everton threat as Man Utd bid to stop the rot

Barcelona must weigh up the decision whether to rest Lionel Messi for Saturday's trip to Getafe ahead of a congested run of fixtures, while Real Madrid are still waiting on the return of Eden Hazard from injury.

Messi played the full 90 minutes in Argentina's World Cup qualifiers against Ecuador and Bolivia during the international break, the second of which was played at altitude in La Paz.

The Barca captain has not missed a single minute for his club since football resumed in June following the coronavirus shutdown.

However, with seven games in the space of 21 days awaiting Barca, coach Ronald Koeman could elect to give Messi a breather before the start of the team's Champions League campaign. &nbsp;

Barca host Hungarian side Ferencvaros on Tuesday and then face sworn enemies Real Madrid four days later behind closed doors at the Camp Nou.

The Catalan club head to Italy for a Champions League clash with Juventus on October 28 before games against Alaves and Real Betis either side of the visit of Dynamo Kiev.

Leaders Madrid are unbeaten in La Liga since March, winning 13 of their past 15 games, and welcome Cadiz to the capital this weekend.

Zinedine Zidane could also opt to rotate some players but Thibaut Courtois, Karim Benzema and Vinicius Junior are in line to play after resting while others were away on international duty.

Courtois left the Belgium squad with a back injury and while he is fit to return, compatriot Hazard is not yet ready for action.

The 29-year-old has yet to feature this season having picked up a muscle injury as he worked his way back from an ankle problem.

He is also expected to miss next weekend's Clasico, but Courtois believes Hazard will come good after scoring just once in an injury-plagued first season in Spain.

"I have no doubt we are going to see the best of Hazard," Courtois told Cadena Ser radio.

"He is more desperate than anyone to show it. He's coming along well and&nbsp; hopefully soon he can prove it.

He added: "I am sure that in no time he will explode and will give many joys to the team."

Atletico Madrid visit Celta Vigo in their first game since the sale of Ghana midfielder Thomas Partey to Arsenal on transfer deadline day.

Partey made 188 appearances for the Atletico and was part of the sides that reached the 2016 Champions League final and beat Arsenal on the way to winning the Europa League in 2018.

<h2>One to watch:&nbsp;Oussama Idrissi</h2>

The Dutch-born Morocco international could make his Sevilla debut at Granada after joining the club on a five-year deal from AZ Alkmaar.

Idrissi, 24, scored 13 goals in 25 games in the Eredivisie last season before it was declared over in March due to the Covid-19 outbreak.

Julen Lopetegui's Europa League winners are one of four undefeated teams in La Liga this term, with seven points from their first three matches.

<h2>Key stats</h2>

12 - goals scored by Sergio Ramos since the start of the 2019/20 season, more than any other defender in Europe's top five leagues.

Barca ponder Messi rest as Madrid continue to wait on Hazard

Former Indian wicket-keeper Deep Dasgupta said he wasn’t surprised by Eoin Morgan being named the new Kolkata Knight Riders captain after Dinesh Karthik stepped down from the leadership duties in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020.

KKR on Friday announced that the 2019 World Cup winning captain will take over the captaincy duties from Karthik, who helped KKR win four out of seven matches in IPL 2020 so far.&nbsp;

Karthik has captained KKR in 37 matches since 2018 with a record of 19 wins and 17 defeats. While KKR qualified to the playoffs in 2018, they ended fifth in the league stage last season.&nbsp;

"I'm not surprised with this decision because more than Dinesh Karthik's form as a batsman or captain, we also have to notice the fact that KKR had a World Cup-winning skipper in their side in Eoin Morgan.

"I felt this was on the cards as soon as KKR had picked up Morgan in the auction in 2019. Your inclined to think on these lines when you have a World Cup-winning captain in your team," the cricketer-turned-commentator, told News Tak.

However, Dasgupta stated that KKR players might struggle to adapt to Morgan’s captaincy but backed the Englishman to carry the team forward in IPL 2020.&nbsp;

"KKR might fall apart or flourish after this decision. Team policies, strategies and mentality changes when there is a change in leadership, especially in the middle of a season, because every captain is different. There might be a few players who might not be able to adapt to the way Morgan leads the team or can't relate to his style of captaincy.

"But at the same time I think the way Morgan has led the England team in the past 2-3 years.... I think he has the capability to handle unforeseen situations but it will be interesting to see how he leads this team," Dasgupta said.

Former Indian wicket-keeper Deep Dasgupta said he wasn’t surprised by Eoin Morgan being named the new Kolkata Knight Riders captain after Dinesh Karthik stepped down from the leadership duties in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020.

Former Indian wicket-keeper Deep Dasgupta said he wasn’t surprised by Eoin Morgan being named the new Kolkata Knight Riders captain after Dinesh Karthik stepped down from the leadership duties in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020. KKR on Friday announced that the 2019 World Cup winning captain will take over the captaincy duties from Karthik, who helped KKR win four out of seven matches in IPL 2020 so far. Karthik has captained KKR in 37 matches since 2018 with a record of 19 wins and 17 defeats. While KKR qualified to the playoffs in 2018, they ended fifth in the league stage last season. "I'm not surprised with this decision because more than Dinesh Karthik's form as a batsman or captain, we also have to notice the fact that KKR had a World Cup-winning skipper in their side in Eoin Morgan. Your inclined to think on these lines when you have a World Cup-winning captain in your team," the cricketer-turned-commentator, told News Tak. However, Dasgupta stated that KKR players might struggle to adapt to Morgan’s captaincy but backed the Englishman to carry the team forward in IPL 2020. I think he has the capability to handle unforeseen situations but it will be interesting to see how he leads this team," Dasgupta said. KKR will take on Mumbai Indians in Abu Dhabi on Friday.

With defender Harry Maguire going through a tough patch on the field, Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer feels the England international will “bounce” back after a torrid start to the season but could be out of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> match against Newcastle United due to injury.

Maguire – the world’s most expensive defender, has struggled in the 2020-21 season since the Greek court case in August. The 27-year-old was handed a suspended 21-month sentence for many charges including assaulting a police officer.
On Wednesday, Maguire was sent off during England’s 1-0 defeat to Denmark in the Nations League as his poor run of form continued.&nbsp;

"When Harry is part of the England team that beats number-one ranked Belgium, that's just a normal day and then you get the headlines when you get the sending-off," said Solskjaer.

"That's just football for you. There's so many ups and downs that we have got to deal with it, individually and as a group.

"Harry's got great resilience. I know he'll bounce back. I'll know that he wants to play, he wants to just work his way out of the last couple of games that he's been criticised for."

Solskjaer further said that Maguire picked up a niggle against Denmark and would undergo a fitness test on Friday. Before the internationals break, Manchester United were thrashed 6-1 by Tottenham Hotspur.&nbsp;

"It's one of those things that you have to get over as soon as you can and move on," Solskjaer said. "We know any little chance from outside... you want to create a division.

"I think Bruno (Fernandes) spoke really well the other day about how we are united, we have to stay together. We can't listen to everyone outside. We've got to just get on with it."

The Manchester United boss further confirmed that new signing Edinson Cavani will miss the trip to St. James’ Part as he is still under quarantine.
