Norris, who made his Formula One debut last year, has made 33 starts so far with one podium finish.McLaren’s racer Lando Norris on Tuesday publicly apologized for recent comments, without naming anyone, after the Briton played down Lewis Hamilton’s record 92nd Formula One triumph at Sunday’s Portuguese Grand Prix.

Norris, 20, the youngest driver on the grid, had criticized Racing Point’s Lance Stroll after the duo collided during the race. While Norris ended up 13th, stewards published Stroll for the incident.

“I owe an apology,” said Norris to his 750,000 followers on Twitter. “I’ve been stupid and careless with some things I’ve said lately in media and interviews, and haven’t shown the respect I should have to certain people.

“I’m not that kind of person, so know I should apologise to them but also everyone reading/listening. Sorry.”
Norris was asked about Hamilton becoming the most successful F1 driver ever (in terms of wins) as he overtook Ferrari legend Michael Schumacher while shattering the record books.

“I’m just happy for him, nothing more,” the Briton had replied.

“It doesn’t mean anything to me, really. He’s in a car which should win every race, basically.

“He has to beat one or two other drivers, that’s it. Fair play to him, he’s still doing the job he has to do.”

Hamilton has won eight of the 12 races this season and is eyeing record-equalling seventh world championship, which would confirm him as the most successful racer in the history of the sport. He has average 10 wins in a season since 2014.

Whereas, Mercedes have won the last six championships and are on course to clinch the seventh in Italy next weekend.
Meanwhile, Norris who made his F1 debut in 2019, has so far made 33 starts thus far with one podium finish.

Sunrisers Hyderabad are set to face Delhi Capitals at the Dubai International Stadium on Tuesday as race to playoffs continues in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020. While DC are currently second in the points table with 14 points, SRH are seventh, and still alive in the tournament, with eight points.&nbsp;

Talking about head-to-head encounters between DC and SRH, the former has won just six matches whereas Hyderabad have been victorious 10 times in 16 outings.

Given the slightly sluggish track in Dubai, the team winning the toss should ideally opt to bat first with a score of around 160 being termed as competitive. Both SRH and DC have a good bowling line-up and would be confident of defending a score of above 160 in Dubai.

SRH vs DC, IPL 2020 Live Streaming: How to watch Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Delhi Capitals online?

Sunrisers Hyderabad will take on Delhi Capitals at the Dubai International Stadium on Tuesday as action continues in <a href="https://www.wionews.com/ipl">Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020</a>. While Sunrisers Hyderabad are still alive in the race for playoffs, Delhi Capitals are mostly battling to finish within the top two spots and could become the first team to qualify for the playoffs.&nbsp;

However, DC are heading into the match on the back of two consecutive defeats and that could motivate the SRH players to go all-out against a side that has suddenly started to struggle a bit.&nbsp;

For DC, only Shikhar Dhawan and Shreyas Iyer have performed consistently with the bat while others have performed in patches. The spin duo of Ravichandran Ashwin and Axar Patel have also started to concede runs, after witnessing an economical first half of IPL 2020.

IPL 2020, SRH vs DC Preview: Can Warner & Co. keep their playoff hopes alive?

Mumbai City have secured the signing of English-born Japanese midfielder Cy Goddard. The 23-year-old joins the Islanders on a season-long loan from Italian club Benevento Calcio.&nbsp;

A product of English club Tottenham Hotspur’s youth academy, Goddard represented Spurs at the U-18, U-21 and U-23 levels before leaving the club in 2017. A move to Italy followed for Goddard where the youngster signed for Serie B side Benevento Calcio on a three-year deal in 2018. In search of more playing time, the young attacking midfielder moved to Cypriot club Pafos FC on loan for the 2019/20 season. Goddard is also a youth international for Japan and has worn the Japanese national colours at the U-16 and U-17 levels in the past.&nbsp;

Cy Goddard&nbsp;said:&nbsp;“I’ve heard plenty of great things not just about India but the Indian Super League as well. When an opportunity to come to Mumbai City came by, I was eager to come to India, showcase my talents here and develop my game. I am aware of the philosophy we have here with coach Sergio Lobera and it fits right with the way I like to play football. It’s unfortunate that we have to play in these unique conditions away from our fans, but I am prepared to give everything it takes to help the club and give our supporters good memories.”&nbsp;

Head coach,&nbsp;Sergio Lobera&nbsp;said:&nbsp;“I am really pleased to have a great talent like Cy in our squad. He has developed from a young age at a top-level club like Tottenham and even at his young age, he brings a lot of valuable experience along with his skill. Cy has the potential to grow and become an influential player here at Mumbai City and we’re looking forward to what he can offer to the squad.”&nbsp;

'Lion-hearted' - Virat Kohli all praise for Mandeep Singh after half-century vs KKR

Varun Chakravarthy, the mystery-spinner who has been making headlines for his bowling for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020, has been named in India’s T20I squad against Australia.

With just one First-Class match under his belt, Chakravarthy has been a success story for not only IPL but also for Tamil Nadu Premier League, where he first caught the eyes of scouts and some of the big-name Indian players playing in the tournament.

After being named in Team India’s squad for Australia tour, Chakravarthy said it feels ‘surreal’ to be named in the Indian time as he received praise from all corners of India.

"After the match got over I got to know (of my selection into the Indian team). I keep using the same word again and again, it feels surreal," he told BCCI.tv at the end of the match against Kings XI Punjab on Monday (October 26).

Chakravarthy has been bowling some economical spells for KKR and has helped the franchise win some close games. However, his best performance came against Delhi Capitals where Chakravarthy ended up with 5 for 20 in his four-over quota.&nbsp;

Chakravarthy, after being selected in the Indian squad, thanked the selectors for keeping faith in him while adding his basic goal was to play for KKR regularly and contribute to their wins.

"My basic goal was to play in the team regularly and perform and contribute to their wins. Hopefully I'll be able to do the same for India. I am not very active on social media and I have to thank the selectors for keeping the faith in me. I don't really have words."

Chakravarthy, who is an architect-turned-cricketer, shot to fame in TNPL a couple of years ago and bagged a whopping INR 8.4 crore in IPL to play for Kings XI Punjab. However, he was hammered for 25 runs by Sunil Narine and is now redeeming himself for KKR after being released by KXIP.

"I pretty much started my spin bowling in 2018, that's when I got my breakthrough in TNPL, it's been high and lows - last year, I didn't get many chances and I injured myself, I'm grateful for making a comeback this year. I have been working hard, but the motivation and faith have come from a lot of people around me," he said at the post-match presentation during his Man of the Match interview against the Capitals.

"Around 2015, when I was not making a lot of money (the switch from being an architect to becoming a cricketer), was freelancing and wasn't able to meet my needs, I thought I would do something different, that's when I turned to cricket. I still do it, I like that as well (being an architect)."

He is now excited to talk to his family and share the joyous news with them as he concluded by saying he wasn’t expecting the call-up.

"I'll talk to my parents, my fiance. I'll just talk to them, share the happiness with them. It is just good news for my family. I'm really short of words right now, India call up is big thing. I really wasn't expecting it."&nbsp;

'Wasn't expecting it': Architect-turned-cricketer Varun Chakravarthy after being awarded India call-up

The All-India Senior Selection Committee on Monday announced the Team India’s squad for the upcoming Australia tour which consists of three T20Is, as many ODIs and four Tests. While some new names featured in three of the squads, a big name in Rohit Sharma was missing from the team sheet. As soon as the squads were announced for the Australia tour, fans and experts started to ask about Rohit Sharma’s fitness.

Rohit, who has blown hot and cold for Mumbai Indians in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 so far, had missed his franchise’s last couple of games where Kieron Pollard was seen leading the Mumbai outfit in Hitman’s absence. While it is understood that Rohit is still recovering from a hamstring strain, the Board of Control for Cricket in Indian (BCCI) in its press release stated: “The BCCI Medical Team will continue to monitor the progress of Rohit Sharma”.

No proper fitness update has been provided by the Mumbai Indians camp either as fans and media continue to remain in the dark. Even there are many other points that should have been cleared up by the board and selection committee. Why was Suryakumar Yadav overlooked again? Still no place for Ravichandran Ashwin and Axar Patel in shorter formats? Why was Rishabh Pant dropped from the limited-overs squad?

Indian legend Gavaskar, during the Kings XI Punjab vs Kolkata Knight Riders match, called for a bit of transparency and openness as it will help everybody associated with Indian cricket, including the fans. Even Brett Lee, in Star Sports Dugout, assumed that Rohit is ruled out of IPL 2020. Well, that's what unclarity brings to the table.

“We are talking about the Test matches, which are a month and a halfway,” Gavaskar told Star Sports.

“And if he is practising in the nets for Mumbai Indians, then honestly I don’t know what kind of injury it is. I think a little bit of transparency, a little bit of openness about what actually is the problem with him will help everybody,” he added.

“The Indian cricket fan deserves to know, more than anything else. The franchisees, I understand. They don’t want to give their hand away. They don’t want to give the oppositions any psychological advantage. But we are talking about the Indian team here. Even Mayank Agarwal for example. For an Indian cricket fan, they ought to know what happens to two of their key players,” Gavaskar said.

Interestingly, moments later after the BCCI announced the squad for Australia tour, in which Rohit’s name was missing, Mumbai Indians took to social media platform Twitter to post a short clip of Rohit hitting the nets and smashing some delightful strokes as they captioned it: “45 seconds of RO 45 in full flow!” So will it be right to say it's an open war between MI and BCCI? That's what happens when there are so many unanswered questions.

The video came as a surprise to many as BCCI had named KL Rahul as vice-captain of ODI and T20I squad as Rohit’s name went missing.

"If Rohit can play during the last week of IPL, that will be a good enough fitness test and then selectors can think of getting him back in the squad," a source close to the cricketer told PTI on conditions of anonymity.&nbsp;

"Rahul is being looked as India's first-choice white-ball keeper till the 2021 World T20 and beyond. Also he has impressed everyone with his leadership skills and that's why this elevation as vice-captain," the source said.&nbsp;

Even Rishabh Pant was dropped from the ODI and T20I squad but was named in the Test squad. Speculations are rife that the southpaw was dropped due to poor fitness but doesn’t Test cricket demand a lot more fitness than the shorter formats?

As Sunil Gavaskar said, a bit of transparency from the BCCI would help everybody. No press conference was held despite it being the first squad selection under chief selector Sunil Joshi and that too, for such a major tour.&nbsp;

Where is Rohit Sharma? Why is transparency missing from BCCI?

Former New Zealand and Chennai Super Kings all-rounder Scott Styris has said that he doesn’t see MS Dhoni’s side quality to the playoffs of the ongoing <a href="https://www.wionews.com/ipl">Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020</a> given their current position in the points table and miserable form.

CSK are lying bottom of IPL 2020 points table but are still ‘mathematically’ in the competition. CSK’s experience have come handy for them almost in every season but Styris is of the view that the ageing squad was supposed to end their cycle one day and it happened this season.

Super Kings have won just three matches of their 10 games so far and have been playing without Suresh Raina and Harbhajan Singh, who opted out of the tournament due to personal reasons. Moreover, injuries have hurt CSK really bad this season.

"Short answer and it hurts me to say this, I don't think so. I think they are the one side who are out of this tournament right now," Scott Styris told Star Sports when asked about CSK's chances.

"You could tell by Stephen Fleming's press conference last match. He believes the life cycle of this team is gone. We have been talking about it for 3 years, an ageing, old team. When that is the case, the performances, at some stage, were supposed to fall off the cliff as age catches up. I think this year is the year.

"I think they did well to get as far as they did last year. But there are so many match-winners in that CSK side who are a little bit older or not quite finding form. I can't see them turning it around. Apart from Faf du Plessis, with his consistent performances, and Deepak Chahar, there are not much else."

Hyderabad brushed Rajasthan aside in Match 40 of the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/ipl">Indian Premier League 2020</a>, at Dubai. Hyderabad bowled well, with especially Jason Holder (4-0-33-3), Vijay Shankar (3-0-15-1), and Rashid Khan (4-0-20-1) leading the way, to restrict Rajasthan to 154/6. Jofra Archer (4-0-21-2) then reduced Hyderabad to 16/2 before Manish Pandey (83* in 47 balls) and Shankar (52* in 51) saw them to an 8-wicket win with 11 balls to spare.

Harsha Bhogle spoke highly of Pandey in the My11 Circle Cricbuzz Analysis: “They [Hyderabad] were in trouble, make no mistake, against a sub-par score with Jofra Archer bowling like the wind … But when you pay big bucks to your top-order batsmen, this is the kind of innings you want them to play, where you not just weather the storm but you take the attack to the opposition. Not a cameo, not a 30-35, but you take the team time. I have seen Manish Pandey play some good innings, but this is as good as he has ever played.”

While lauding Archer’s superb probing, Bhogle pointed out how dependent the Rajasthan was on him: “It’s looking like Archer at one end, and then [Steven] Smith is looking around.”

For Rajasthan, Ben Stokes has not lived up to the immense expectations. Lisa Sthalekar explained: “I think they really have to got to have a look at Ben Stokes and what he is giving them. That is international sport, and he is not just performing with bat or ball, and maybe he just needs some time out.”

Elaborating on what went wrong with his batting, Sthalekar explained: “You just need to have fast hands, get the ball in the middle of the bat, but he was trying to hit himself out of form, out of the slump he is in.”

Bhogle agreed: “Ben Stokes is an outstanding Test match cricketer and a very, very high-calibre One-Day cricketer. Those numbers force a question whether he is as good in the T20 format.” Following ordinary shows in 2018 and 2019, Stokes has scored 110 runs in 2020 at a strike rate of 106.79, while his bowling figures read 8-0-82-0.

Thanks to the win, Sunrisers jumped from seventh to fifth place, while Rajasthan slid to seventh. They are above only Chennai.

I have seen Manish Pandey play some good innings, but this is as good as he has ever played.” ALSO READ: Pandey, Shankar strike unbeaten fifties in Sunrisers' win over RR While lauding Archer’s superb probing, Bhogle pointed out how dependent the Rajasthan was on him: “It’s looking like Archer at one end, and then [Steven] Smith is looking around.” For Rajasthan, Ben Stokes has not lived up to the immense expectations. Real Madrid forward Eden Hazard is the kind of special talent football needs but he may struggle to recapture his best form as injury continues to rob him of time on the pitch, Danish great Michael Laudrup has said.

Hazard joined Real from Chelsea last year for a fee of 100 million euros ($118 million) but his impact in Spain has been minimal due to two ankle injuries.

The Belgian made only 14 league starts last season, scoring one goal, and the 29-year-old is yet to play in the current campaign due to a muscle injury.

“Every time you think he’s back he plays a few games and then he’s out again ... it’s so sad to see a great player like him and the weeks and months are just disappearing for him,” Laudrup, who played for Real from 1994-1996, told the BBC.

“I don’t understand what’s wrong, he had some injuries at Chelsea but never this much ... I hope he’ll come back but the problem is as you get older it’s tougher to come back at the level you were before.

“I’ve watched him so many times with Chelsea and Belgium and really enjoy him because I think we lack these kinds of players in football nowadays, players who take the ball and players who go one-on-one or one-on-two.

“We need them, otherwise we just play the ball around and who is going to do the special things?”

Real visit Barcelona in the season’s first Clasico on Saturday.

Gareth Bale helped Tottenham to an opening 3-0 victory over LASK of Austria in their Europa League campaign on Thursday but Celtic suffered another setback with a home 3-1 loss at the hands of Zlatan Ibrahimovic's AC Milan.

There were also wins for Spurs' Premier League rivals Arsenal and Leicester which left English sides looking back on a promising week in Europe with six victories and one draw from Champions League and Europa League games.

Despite Bale starting for the first time since his return from Real Madrid, it was on-loan Carlos Vinicius who made an impressive debut as Tottenham enjoyed a 3-0 win in their Group J opener.

Vinicius started in place of the resting Harry Kane and he made goals in either half for Lucas Moura and Son Heung-min, while he would have also netted himself had Andres Andrade not scored an own goal.

Bale made that goal where Andrade put through his own net.

Leicester made the perfect start in Group G with a comfortable 3-0 win over Zorya Luhansk of Ukraine.

James Maddison, Harvey Barnes and Kelechi Iheanacho were on the scoresheet.

In Glasgow, Celtic struggled against Serie A leaders Milan who were 2-0 up at half-time thanks to goals from Rade Krunic and Brahim Diaz.

Mohamed Elyounoussi reduced the arrears after the break, but Jens Petter Hauge broke clear to secure Milan's Group H win in stoppage time.

Milan were so comfortable that they could afford to take Ibrahimovic off just after the hour.

Earlier Thursday, Arsenal came from behind to down Rapid Vienna 2-1 and Rangers beat Standard Liege 2-0.

Arsenal, the 2019 finalists under Unai Emery, were struggling to make an impact in Austria.

After a goalless first half they went behind when keeper Bernd Leno fluffed a clearance on a night he will want to forget.

Taxiarchis Fountas capitalised on Leno's clanger, much to the joy of the 3,000 home fans allowed in to watch under coronavirus safety protocol, but the Gunners then turned the game around in four second half minutes.

David Luiz put them level with a deft glancing header off Nicolas Pepe's free-kick, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang then tapping home to bag the three Group B points.

It was an eventful night for Mikel Arteta's side with alongside eight yellow cards an eye catching display from Thomas Partey on his first start since his transfer deadline day move from Atletico Madrid.

A frustrated follower of the game from his London sofa was Mesut Ozil, who has been left out of both Arsenal's Europa League and Premier League squad.

"When I can't support on the pitch tonight, I will support in front of the TV in London." tweeted Ozil.

The other Group B game was being played out in Dublin where Dundalk, only Ireland's third ever representative in the group stage, were beaten 2-1 by Norwegians Molde.

In Belgium, Steven Gerrard's Rangers took on Standard Liege fresh from their Old Firm derby win over Celtic which moved them four points clear in the Scottish Premiership last weekend.

With the rain coming down, James Tavernier scored from the spot after Noe Dussenne handled in the area to put them into a 19th minute lead.

Then three minutes into stoppage time Kemar Roofe produced a wonder goal from the halfway line, the ball flying over the head of bewildered keeper Arnaud Bodart.

Benfica had claimed the first goal of the night and they went on to beat Lech Poznan in Poland 4-2 in the other Group D game.

Elsewhere, Bayer Leverkusen ran riot 6-2 against French side Nice and Spanish side Granada, in their first ever European campaign, beat PSV Eindhoven 2-1.

Manish Pandey smashed eight sixes in a blistering 83 after Jason Holder made an instant impact with the ball as Sunrisers Hyderbad kept themselves in the race for IPL play-offs with an eight-wicket win over Rajasthan Royals here on Thursday.

Pandey and Vijay Shankar (52) stitched an unbroken 140-run partnership after Holder led a disciplined bowling display to restrict Rajasthan Royals to 154 for six.

Playing his first match of the tournament, Holder (3/33) came up with an impressive bowling effort while also affecting a run out to destabilise the RR innings. Rashid Khan (1/20) and Vijay Shankar (1/15) picked a wicket each.

During his unbeaten 47-ball knock, Pandey hit four balls to the fence and eight over it, while Shankar struck six boundaries.

The duo played intelligently in a must-win game for the Sunrisers.

With the win, Sunrisers moved up to the fifth spot, while the Royals were pushed down to seventh.

The Sunrisers' chase was off to the worst possible start with skipper David Warner (4) giving away his wicket to Jofra Archer once again in the very first over. The Barbadian-born English pacer then got rid of Jonny Bairstow (10) in his second over.

With the dangerous openers back in the dugout, Pandey made full use of the field restrictions in the first six overs. He targeted young Kartik Tyagi, smashing the right-arm medium pacer for three boundaries and two sixes.

Pandey survived an lbw scare in the ninth over. He continued to pick the Rajasthan bowlers with Shankar holding fort at the other end.

Eventually the all-rounder, too, found his mojo, hitting back-to-back fours off leg-spinner Shreyas Gopal in the 11 over. He also hit Archer for three successive boundaries.

Earlier, Sunrisers, who were struggling at the penultimate spot in the points table with only three wins from nine outings, opted to bowl after winning the toss at the Dubai International Stadium.

For RR, Sanju Samson (36 off 26 balls) was the top scorer.

Put in to bat, Robin Uthappa looked in rampaging form, hitting the first four and six of the innings. He quickly raced to 19 off 13 balls.

However, his time in the middle was short lived. After Ben Stokes (30) hit Holder for back-to-back boundaries in the fourth over, the West Indies skipper effected Uthappa's run out as the Indian was late to turn back at the non-striker's end.

The powerplay overs yielded 47 runs, including six fours and a maximum, for the loss of one wicket.

The big-hitting Stokes was dropped on 17 in the eighth over by Shankar off a Rashid delivery. Alongside Samson, he kept the scoreboard ticking.

A 56-run stand between the two was broken in the 12th over by Holder. Samson, who had reached his highest score since the 85 against Kings XI Punjab in RR's second match of the tournament, was bowled by a slow off-cutter, after pulling the previous delivery over midwicket for a huge six.

Stokes' stay came to an end when the World Cup winning all-rounder was bowled by Rashid in the beginning of the 13th over, with the Sunrisers bowlers making a strong comeback in the middle overs. RR then lost wickets at regular intervals.

Jos Buttler, too, fell quickly as he was sent back by Shankar in the 16th over with skipper Steve Smith (19) also failing to make an impact.

He was once known as the most creative football player in the world. His fans called him - the perfect passing machine. His name is Mesut Ozil, a German football player of Turkish descent. The post went viral - and Ozil was taken out of several video games in China. Even his club's next game against Manchester City - was removed from state broadcaster CCTV's schedule.

Chennai Super Kings will take on Mumbai Indians at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Friday as the two of the most successful teams in <a href="https://www.wionews.com/ipl-2020">Indian Premier League (IPL)</a> lock horns in the 13th edition of the T20 tournament.&nbsp;

CSK are lying bottom in the IPL 2020 points table with only three wins under their belt whereas MI are third in the standings with six wins. The battle between CSK and MI have always been deemed as ‘El Clasico’ of cricket and both the sides would be looking to put a spectacle for the fans.

Given the sluggish and deteriorating pitch in Sharjah, a score of 200-plus looks unlikely but it could change drastically if the batsmen get it going in smaller boundaries of Sharjah.

The battle between CSK and MI have always been deemed as ‘El Clasico’ of cricket and both the sides would be looking to put a spectacle for the fans. Given the sluggish and deteriorating pitch in Sharjah, a score of 200-plus looks unlikely but it could change drastically if the batsmen get it going in smaller boundaries of Sharjah. Big Bash League (BBL) franchises are looking to rope in the Indian trio of MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina and Yuvraj Singh. All three of Dhoni, Raina and Yuvraj have retired from international cricket with the former two still participating in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020.&nbsp;

With BBL allowing three foreign players per team, all the franchises are eyeing Dhoni, Raina and Yuvraj to not only bolster their squads but also to gain massive popularity in India. However, they will have to get NOC from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) first.

According to a report in cricket.com.au, BBL is keen on adding some Indian firepower to their arsenal with Dhoni, Raina and Yuvraj leading the pecking order.

The BCCI has clearly stated that it won’t allow their players to play in foreign leagues due to the exclusivity factor in IPL and domestic competitions. However, few players like Yuvraj, Manpreet Gony, Pravin Tambe among others have participated in overseas leagues after retiring from the BCCI. They are no more allowed to take part in Indian domestic tournaments including the IPL.

Notably, all three of Dhoni, Raina and Yuvraj will be free when BBL 2020-21 kicks off in December. Interestingly, in December 2016, Dhoni had said that he will see how the future goes after retirement as the quality of BBL demands a lot of physical fitness.&nbsp;

“We are quite focused on international cricket for now so I can’t really make any comment on that [BBL future]. We’ll see how the future goes. It depends on when I retire and whether I’m in a position to play international cricket. The Big Bash, the quality of cricket is high so a lot depends on the physical fitness and the will to carry on and play more cricket,” the Ranchi superstar had said.

Mikel Arteta admitted he has failed to get the best out of Mesut Ozil after the German expressed his anger at being left out the Gunners' Premier League squad.

The 32-year-old is the highest-paid player in Arsenal's history on a reported £350,000 ($450,000) a week, but has also been omitted from the Arsenal's Europa League squad, casting doubt he will ever play for the club again.

Ozil has not played a single minute for Arteta's side since March 7 and is out of contract at the end of the season.

"My job is to get the best out of every player, to contribute to the team performance. Here I feel at the moment, today, that I have failed," Arteta said at a pre-match press conference ahead of Thursday's Europa League trip to Rapid Vienna.

"I want the best possible Mesut for the team. In some moments I was able to get close to that, and at the moment I have not been able to do it because I have to make the decision to leave him out of the squad."

Earlier on Wednesday, Ozil expressed his frustration at being sidelined and suggested he had not been treated fairly.

"Upon signing my new contract in 2018, I pledged my loyalty and allegiance to the club that I love, Arsenal, and it saddens me that this has not been reciprocated," said Ozil in a statement posted on social media.

"I can promise you that this hard decision won't change anything in my mindset - I will continue to train as best as I can and wherever possible use my voice against inhumanity and for justice."

Last December Arsenal distanced themselves from comments Ozil made criticising China's treatment of the Uighur population in Xinjiang.

The World Cup winner also refused to take a 12.5 percent pay cut in line with the rest of the Arsenal squad when the economic crisis caused by coronavirus hit in April.

However, Arteta insisted that his decision was purely a football one.

"My conscience is very calm because I have been really fair with him. My level of communication with him has been really high and we know what to expect with each other," added Arteta.

"Obviously a player of that dimension, with the career he has had, everything that happens around him has a big impact.

"It has been the case for the last eight years, it is nothing new that is just happening now. A lot of things have happened over these eight years."

Earlier this month, Ozil offered to pay the salary of Arsenal's popular mascot Gunnersaurus after Jerry Quy, who has played the role of the dinosaur since 1993, was let go by the club with stadiums empty during the Covid-19 crisis.

Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford has warned MPs not to "turn a blind eye" to vulnerable families as the House of Commons prepared to vote on an opposition &nbsp;to extend free school meals over the holidays

The 22-year-old Rashford, who has led a campaign on the issue, said Wednesday he would be "paying close attention" to the vote.

The British government has so far refused to extend the provision of free school meals in England over the half-term and Christmas breaks.

But Robert Halfon MP, the chairman of the Commons Education Select Committee and a member of the governing Conservative Party, has urged the Government to continue providing meals over the holidays while the Covid-19 crisis is ongoing.

But Prime Minister Boris Johnson told MPs on Wednesday: "We support kids on low incomes in school and we will continue to do so.

"We will continue to use the benefits system and all the systems of income to support children throughout the holidays as well."

Earlier Rashford, urged his 3.4 million Twitter followers to lobby MPs to back his campaign.

He said: "Paying close attention to the Commons today and to those who are willing to turn a blind eye to the needs of our most vulnerable children, 2.2 million of them who currently qualify for free school meals."

Rashford said the pandemic had made the situation worse than it was at the start of the crisis.

"We aren't in the same position we were in in the summer, it's much worse," he said.

"The number of children with little to no access to food has risen significantly."

Jurgen Klopp saluted Liverpool's fighting spirit as the Reds proved they can cope without Virgil van Dijk by grinding out a 1-0 win at Ajax in the opening game of their Champions League campaign on Wednesday.

Klopp's side are likely to be without Van Dijk for the rest of the season after the influential Dutch centre-back suffered anterior cruciate ligament damage against Everton last weekend.

Critics have claimed Liverpool will struggle without Van Dijk, but Brazilian midfielder Fabinho filled in impressively alongside Joe Gomez at the heart of the defence.

While Liverpool weren't at their best and rode their luck at times, never more so than when Nicolas Tagliafico diverted Sadio Mane's scuffed effort into his own net in the first half, it was an encouraging Group D opener for Klopp.

There was enough spirit about the 2019 Champions League winners to suggest they will use the Van Dijk blow to fuel their Premier League title defence and European challenge.

"It was not perfect but they fought brilliantly," Klopp said. "We did not take our chances, which was a shame, and Ajax had a big one which hit the post.&nbsp;

"When you're 1-0 up, these things can happen. But overall I'm happy with the game.&nbsp;

"It was not sunshine football but we wanted three points and we got it."

Van Dijk will need knee surgery after being pole-axed by Everton keeper Jordan Pickford's ugly foul and his injury came at a time when Liverpool looked vulnerable after losing 7-2 at Aston Villa before the international break.

Against that backdrop, keeping a clean-sheet for just the third time this season was a big lift for Liverpool, who won for the first time in three games despite also being without defender Joel Matip and midfielder Thiago Alcantara after the brutal Merseyside derby.

"I think both teams could play better football. At moments it was wild. The pitch was deep and muddy," Klopp said.

"Xherdan Shaqiri was lively and Takumi Minamino was unbelievable. He is like a machine. It helps when you can make five substitutions."

Praising Fabinho for an acrobatic goalline clearance, Klopp added: "I didn't know how it happened in the beginning. That's a good example of how the boys did today."

<h2>- Backs to the wall -</h2>

&nbsp;

Liverpool's makeshift defence was easily carved open early on when Quincy Promes advanced down the left and found Dusan Tadic, who set up Ryan Gravenberch for a fierce strike that flashed just wide.

There was another major scare as David Neres' pass found the unmarked Promes six yards from goal, but he shot straight at Adrian to let Liverpool off the hook.

Making the most of that escape, Liverpool took the lead in bizarre fashion in the 35th minute.

Mane eluded Perr Schuurs as he broke into the Ajax area but when the Senegal forward went to shoot, he stubbed his foot into the turf, sending a miscued effort towards Tagliafico, who lost his balance and prodded the ball into his own net under no pressure.

Klopp has been fostering a siege mentality among his players since the Everton game and their backs to the wall spirit was on full display when Fabinho raced back to clear Tadic's lob off the line with a superb overhead kick.

Van Dijk couldn't have done it better himself, but while Fabinho was impressing, Ajax still carried a threat.

Taking aim from the edge of the area, Davy Klaassen smashed a fierce strike off the far post in the first minute of the second half.

Ajax went close again when Noussair Mazraoui took a Neres cutback and forced Adrian into a fine save.

Klopp took off Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah and Mane, with the latter needing ice on his right leg as he sat on the bench.

Jurgen Ekkelenkamp almost snatched a late equaliser after a mistake from Adrian, but Liverpool held their nerve to provide a morale-boosting start to life without Van Dijk.

"It was not perfect but they fought brilliantly," Klopp said. "We did not take our chances, which was a shame, and Ajax had a big one which hit the post. "When you're 1-0 up, these things can happen. But overall I'm happy with the game. "It was not sunshine football but we wanted three points and we got it." Van Dijk will need knee surgery after being pole-axed by Everton keeper Jordan Pickford's ugly foul and his injury came at a time when Liverpool looked vulnerable after losing 7-2 at Aston Villa before the international break. It helps when you can make five substitutions." Praising Fabinho for an acrobatic goalline clearance, Klopp added: "I didn't know how it happened in the beginning. That's a good example of how the boys did today." - Backs to the wall - Liverpool's makeshift defence was easily carved open early on when Quincy Promes advanced down the left and found Dusan Tadic, who set up Ryan Gravenberch for a fierce strike that flashed just wide. Klopp hails spirit as Liverpool show they can cope without Van Dijk

Pep Guardiola said an injury to Fernandinho late in Manchester City's 3-1 win over Porto to begin their Champions League campaign will be far from the last his side suffer with a gruelling schedule ahead.

City face another 17 games in 2020 with all six Champions League group-stage matches packed into a seven-week stretch either side of the November international break.

Guardiola's men have struggled to hit the ground running this season with a short pre-season, coronavirus infections and injuries taking their toll.

On Wednesday City missed the presence of the injured Kevin De Bruyne, but battled back to get their latest quest to win a maiden Champions League off to a winning start after Luis Diaz's solo effort put the visitors in front in the first half.

Sergio Aguero levelled with a contentious penalty seven minutes later and the Premier League side's quality shone through after half-time as Ilkay Gundogan's free-kick and substitute Ferran Torres' fine finish moved City to the top of Group C.

"It's a good start for us," said Guardiola. "We knew the games at home you have to win in this competition.

"(Fernandinho) is the bad news, he has a muscular problem so he will be a big loss. In this period we need everyone, but with this calendar it happens."

Guardiola admitted on Tuesday to still feeling guilty over the experimental line-up and formation that led to City's latest Champions League calamity in last season's quarter-finals against Lyon in August.

The Catalan is into the final year of his contract at the Etihad Stadium and so this is potentially his last chance to land the prize City most desired when they brought him to Manchester in 2016.

However, in the early weeks of this season City have look a faded force from the prime of Guardiola's reign, when they won back to back Premier League titles in 2018 and 2019.

<h2>- Gundogan's moment of magic -</h2>

A sluggish start against Porto was punished by Diaz who opened the scoring with a brilliant solo run and finish.

City levelled with a good deal of fortune when Gundogan inadvertently caught Porto goalkeeper Agustin Marchesin as he tried to direct the ball goalwards and, after the German's shot came off the post, Raheem Sterling was barged over in the box by Pepe.

After a lengthy VAR review, Gundogan's challenge was not deemed a foul that would have overturned the initial decision to award a penalty, and Aguero smashed home his first goal of the season.

City regained control after the break, but it wasn't until a moment of magic from Gundogan 25 minutes from time that they went in front.

The midfielder won a free-kick on the edge of the area and then curled the ball over the wall and into the net to the relief of Guardiola, who was about to replace him.

Gundogan was starting for the first time since testing positive for coronavirus and he was replaced seconds after scoring as Guardiola added a fresh injection of pace in Phil Foden and Torres, who combined for the latter to make it 3-1 in style.

Gundogan, though, said City will need a squad effort to get through the next few months.

"We are struggling at this moment," said Gundogan. "Fernandinho went off, we have a few injured players. Even me, I am not 100 percent because I was out with Covid for a couple of weeks.

"That's the challenge this season and it's not going to end for a while, but we will take every game as it comes. We have enough players who have the quality to play."

Guardiola bemoans gruelling schedule as sluggish Man City see off Porto

Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti on Thursday defended goalkeeper Jordan Pickford over a reckless tackle that left Liverpool defender Virgil Van Dijk with a serious injury as he said that suggesting it was pre-meditated tackle was “not fair”.

The England international has been central to widespread criticism, mostly from Liverpool fans, after his challenge in last week’s Merseyside derby, which left the Dutch centre-back with knee ligament damage.

Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum said that the goalkeeper was “stupid” and made the challenge without any concern for his opponent’s welfare.

However, Ancelotti has dismissed the tack while saying that everyone at Everton is sorry about Van Dijk’s injury, which will keep him out for several months.&nbsp;

"To be clear, we are really sorry for the injury of Virgil van Dijk. Every one of us hopes he can recover soon and well," he told Everton TV.

"There was this contact with Jordan Pickford. It was mistimed contact but the fact the Premier League is so fast, it is not so difficult to arrive a little bit later."

The Everton boss said his goalkeeper's intention had been to win the ball, not to hurt Van Dijk.

"To say it was pre-meditated and this and that, in my opinion, is too much," he said. "Virgil van Dijk knows this. This is football and unfortunately, you can be injured.

El Clasico, the most-watched club game in world football, is back, with FC Barcelona set to host Real Madrid at the Camp Nou on Saturday&nbsp;at 7:30 pm. An unpredictable, live-action drama shown all over the world by over 100 LaLiga partners and now into its 90th&nbsp;season – a feat unprecedented in the entertainment world. The LaLiga El Clasico saga has gifted us a stream of incredible storylines over the years, including the greatness of legends such as Johan Cruyff, Alfredo Di Stefano and more recently Ronaldinho, Sergio Ramos and Lionel Messi, unforgettable moments of both showmanship and sportsmanship, and technological and broadcast landmarks.

<h2>The first El Clasico of the COVID-19 era</h2>

Enjoying El Clasico, or LaLiga football in general, seemed unlikely just months ago, with the world in lockdown in the midst of the global COVID-19 pandemic. But LaLiga’s comprehensive #BackToWin strategy – which laid out an extensive multi-phase plan to restart the season with regular COVID-19 testing covering personal behaviour away from training facilities, in homes and daily lives – ensured not only that the 2019/20 LaLiga Santander season could be completed in the space of just 39 days without a single positive case but also that the 2020/21 season started on time in early September.&nbsp;

<h2>Over 100 ElClasico-themed actions organised all over the world</h2>

Though governmental health restrictions mean fans won’t be in the Camp Nou stands for this first-ever El Clasico behind closed doors, LaLiga has ensured that fans around the world will still be able to come together for the greatest show in club football.

Over 100 ElClasico-themed actions are being organised across the world, among them a public viewing for up to 700 fans in Shanghai, watch parties in Vietnam, Dubai, South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya and other locations across the African continent. Over in Latin America, meanwhile, fans will be able to enjoy the action from the comfort of their own cars in a series of drive-in cinema locations across Mexico, Colombia, Ecuador and Argentina. LaLiga will also celebrate the ‘premiere’ of its flagship show by lining red carpets at well-known landmarks in the United States, United Kingdom, India, Australia, Senegal, Colombia and Tajikistan to remind fans that El Clasico offers entertainment like no other.

<h2>An unrivalled broadcast and digital experience</h2>

No matter their location in the world, a potential audience of 650 million fans will be able to watch El Clasico like never before. New match broadcast graphics and statistics powered by cutting-edge Artificial Intelligence and Augmented Reality now provide fans with a more complete viewing experience than ever before, and pioneering virtualised crowd and audio technology complements the on-field action while fans are yet to return to LaLiga stadiums. With 14 LaLiga Santander stadiums kitted out with aerial cameras and aerial drones now capturing new and exclusive angles, the action never looked so good on a screen. El Clasico will be shown live in India on Facebook for free.

LaLiga’s 22 international social media channels publishing exciting content in the week leading up the match as well live streaming the all-important pre-match buildup in the two hours before kick-off to over 120 million followers around the world. A special online Fan Zone will be created giving fans a chance to win replica shirts of their favourite clubs, while a brand new mobile game, Score Words LaLiga, will be launched in line with the match offering fun challenges and online gameplay. <h2>The stars of El Clasico</h2>

As always, the greatest stars in world football will be on show for the millions of viewers around the globe. A key talking point of ElClasico Season 90 will also be the plethora of exciting new faces on show. Dutch coach and former Barça legend Ronald Koeman returned to the Camp Nou this summer charged with leading an ambitious wholescale rebuilding project and has made some of the most talked-about moves in this summer’s European transfer market, welcoming the likes of Sergiño Dest – the first American to ever represent Barcelona in LaLiga – Trincao and Miralem Pjanic to the Catalan capital. On the other side of the El Clasico divide, Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane – like Koeman, one of the most iconic players in his club’s history and in the ElClasico story – leads a mostly unchanged squad to that which steamrolled its way to the LaLiga Santander title after the break forced by COVID-19 last season.

Add in the fact that this season’s ElClasico boasts some of the most exciting young talents in world football under the age of 21, among them teenage prodigy Ansu Fati – Barcelona’s youngest-ever goalscorer – the aforementioned Dest, and at Real Madrid Norwegian wonderkid Martin Odegaard and Vinicius Jr, and this ElClasico is shaping up to be one of the most thrilling and intriguing clashes between the two sides in recent memory.

Everything is in place for the return of ElClasico, the best footballers in the world and the best fan experience possible.

La Liga braces itself for the first El Clasico of the COVID-19 era

Portuguese megastar Cristiano Ronaldo has once again tested positive for COVID-19 and is now set to miss Juventus’ UEFA Champions League against Barcelona next week while denying the footballing world with a grand reunion with Lionel Messi.

Ronaldo first tested positive for COVID-19 just days after playing for Portugal against Spain and France instilling the Juventus faithful with fear that the star forward would miss the club’s UCL encounter against Barcelona – which seems to have come true.

The 35-year-old has tested positive for coronavirus again, as per Spanish outlet Marca while a report in Correio da Manha claims that Ronaldo’s test gave a very low viral load despite the Portuguese testing positive. Juventus haven’t given up on Ronaldo’s return for their match against Barcelona.

Juventus are now set to ask UEFA for permission to test Ronaldo 48 hours before their encounter against Barcelona on October 28 with the final call lying with the European body. UEFA protocols say that a player must test negative at least one week before a match to be eligible for selection.

Kolkata’s total in seam-friendly conditions in Abu Dhabi was the lowest score in the IPL by a team playing its full quota of 20 overs, with Mumbai Indians’ 94-8 against Rajasthan Royals in 2011 the previous record.

Bangalore’s Mohammed Siraj was the pick of the bowlers, giving away eight runs in his four overs and picking up three wickets.

“RCB bowled really well. Siraj bowled an excellent line and length and I think he was able to present the seam and ask a few questions of us, questions which in the past we have answered better than we did,” McCullum told reporters.

“Before the game we talked about wanting to show strong intent at the top of the order and we lacked intent. That’s something we’re going to have to address... you have to be creative to get yourselves into the game.

“You’re not going to win too many games from 40-6... we’ve got to bounce back. That could be the nature of this tournament with the conditions being slightly challenging... find a way to pick yourselves up and get a result after a poor one.”

Twice champions Kolkata are fourth in the table with 10 points from as many games, while Bangalore are second on 14 points, trailing leaders Delhi Capitals only on net run rate.
