Now, Jitendra Singh, who was Hardik Pandya's childhood coach, has given his take on Dhawan being chosen over the star all-rounder. He expressed his disappointment in Hardik not getting the captaincy.

“Definitely, I was,” Singh told CricketNext when he was asked whether he was surprised at Hardik not getting the captaincy.

“He could have been a great option as he can play for five to seven years. He has got new thoughts and has a lot of energy. He could have been a good investment (in captaincy) especially for the white-ball format,” he said.

Hardik Pandya has played a crucial role for India in the limited-overs format. He has featured in 60 ODIs and 48 T20Is. However, in recent months, Hardik Pandya has rarely bowled for the Men in Blue and has been played more like a batsman instead of an all-rounder.

“I want him to perform more as an all-rounder. If his alignment and bowling action is better, he will definitely be. He is very serious regarding his bowling,” said Singh.

“He has always been flamboyant and wanted to express himself. He can bat in any situation. He has learnt quickly and added new dimensions in his batting. His maturity as an international batsman is pleasing and he will improve further,” he said.

Team India will take on Sri Lanka in a three-match ODI starting from July 18.

Cricket: Shikhar Dhawan and co. arrive in Sri Lanka ahead of limited-overs series

The way that Indian cricket today has the most efficient bench strength in the world isn't something that was grown for the time being. It required a very long time for the Indian cricketing framework to foster players that today can fill in the boots for a major player. Look no farther than the visit through Australia. The incomparable Rahul Dravid was caught up with doing what he excels at – set up the stars of tomorrow.

Under Dravid, India won the Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand in 2018. He has directed the Indian junior teams to bilateral and multilateral series wins, both in India and abroad. Up until now, he has trained the India 'A' and Under-19 teams and is functioning as the Head of Cricket at the National Cricket Academy.

He has effectively made significant strides as a cricket coach and his probation starts with his first task with a 'senior India group that is visiting Sri Lanka.

Rahul Dravid, India's coach for the Sri Lanka visit, addressed the press conference alongside Shikhar Dhawan before the group's takeoff to Sri Lanka for the limited-overs series.

Many youngsters will be looking at this opportunity to make it to the Indian Team for the upcoming T20 World Cup this year. Rahul Dravid said: "There are a lot of players in the squad who are pushing for places or looking to cement their places in the T20 World Cup. But the key goal for everyone in the squad is to try and win the series. That’s the primary objective. Hopefully, people can get the opportunity to put in good performances in the course of winning the series, and knock doors of selectors."

The uncapped young players, who have risen steeply from homegrown cricket and the IPL will be eyeing a spot in Team India. The series has a lot at stake for the budding cricketers, given the ever-so-approaching T20 World Cup in October-November. He said: "These are only 3 games before the T20 World Cup. The selectors and management will have an idea by now about what they’re looking for. There’s the IPL before the WC. In that sense, there may be one or two places the management and selectors might want to fill. So give them a few more options. But can’t read too much into it as well. There might be a few odd spots to be filled. We have a couple of selectors traveling with us, we’ll interact with them. Had a little bit of contact with the management in England. Didn’t want to disturb them during the WTC final, so will touch base with them over the next couple of weeks and plan."

Rahul Dravid's significant commitment has been during his present stretch as India A and India U-19 team coach. He has furnished Indian Cricket with a lot of budding cricketers with a lot of skill and talent. However, he says India A stint is slightly different from Senior Indian Team: "It’s slightly different. When you’re at the developmental level, the goal is different from this. we have a really good squad here, 20 players. Will be unrealistic to expect everyone to get an opportunity in this short series. We’ll come up with what we think is the best combination to win the series. And then see along the way, there are plenty of youngsters, even if they don’t play, it’s a great opportunity for them to learn from seniors like Shikhar. It’s very different worlds - Under19 and A team and this."

There is no scrutinizing the qualifications of Rahul Dravid the player just as the coach. Having demonstrated his coaching capacity at a specific level up to this point, and with progress, the consequence of the six-match limited-over series in Sri Lanka will 'help him to learn and improve'. He says, "It’s a great blend of experienced players and fresh players. As a coach, it’s quite an exciting situation because you know if you create a good environment, everyone will learn a lot. We have to be together as a large group, there are opportunities to learn and grow. It’s a good chance for me as well, as a coach you’re always learning from every experience. Prithvi Shaw, Rahul Dravid's picked skipper for the 2018 World Cup has performed at the most significant level and will be an important expansion to the opening slot.
The world cup was likewise the disclosure of Prithvi Shaw, as a batsman. Prithvi Shaw will once again play under the guidance of Rahul Dravid in the impending tour.

"For a lot more people other than Prithvi as well someone like Devdutt Padikkal or Ruturaj Gaikwad, a lot of the younger boys will be extremely keen to do well. Whether they get called up for the T20 WC is for the selectors to take. But certainly, a good performance against international oppositions will help. If you can do well at this level, the selectors will certainly take note. No tour is a life and death situation; it’s not like just because you do well against Sri Lanka, you’ll make it, or vice versa. But performing in the pressure of international cricket, the selectors will certainly take note."

The way that Indian cricket today has the most efficient bench strength in the world isn't something that was grown for the time being. It required a very long time for the Indian cricketing framework to foster players that today can fill in the boots for a major player.

ALSO READ: Dale Steyn: One of the greatest fast bowler to have played Test cricket Rahul Dravid, India's coach for the Sri Lanka visit, addressed the press conference alongside Shikhar Dhawan before the group's takeoff to Sri Lanka for the limited-overs series. Hopefully, people can get the opportunity to put in good performances in the course of winning the series, and knock doors of selectors." The uncapped young players, who have risen steeply from homegrown cricket and the IPL will be eyeing a spot in Team India. Didn’t want to disturb them during the WTC final, so will touch base with them over the next couple of weeks and plan." Rahul Dravid's significant commitment has been during his present stretch as India A and India U-19 team coach. It’s very different worlds - Under19 and A team and this." There is no scrutinizing the qualifications of Rahul Dravid the player just as the coach. You learn about yourself and about cricket. It’s another opportunity for me to learn and improve. I’m quite excited." The batting legend will now manage Team India that will tour Sri Lanka. Dravid explained that young players involved with him at India A and Under-19 became immense talent due to the number of opportunities he provides.

"I tell them upfront, if you come on an A tour with me, you will not leave here without playing a game. I've had that personal experience myself as a kid: going on an A tour and not getting an opportunity to play is terrible. You've done well, you scored 700-800 runs, you go, and you don't get a chance to show what you're good at," Dravid was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo on The Cricket Monthly.

"Then you're back to square one from the selectors' point of view, because the next season you have to score those 800 runs again. It is not easy to do that, so there is no guarantee you'll get a chance again. So. you tell people upfront: this is the best 15 and we are playing them. This is not about the supposed best XI. At U-19, we make five-six changes between games if we can."

Dravid went on to point out the difference between today's scenarios and the days when he used to play cricket.

"Playing on the beach and playing on the road doesn't make you a cricketer. It makes you someone who loves the game. That's what we had. We had a lot of people who loved the game. Unless you give that guy a proper matting wicket or a turf wicket, unless you give him some half-decent coaching, some half-decent fitness assistance... where was all this in the 1990s and the 2000s?" Dravid pointed out.

"There was no access to it. We were starved of knowledge. Even in terms of fitness, we used to look at the Australians and South Africans and we used to look at their fitness trainers, and what did we get? 'Don't do too much gym, your body will become stiff. Bowl, bowl and bowl. Run rounds and laps.'"

Shikhar Dhawan donates oxygen concentrators to Gurugram police

Aakash Chopra has picked his favoured 17-member Indian squad for the Sri Lanka visit and has named Shikhar Dhawan as the skipper.

Team India will set out on a six-match visit through Sri Lanka in July. With the vast majority of the standard team is set to be away in England at that point, the squad will include white-ball subject matter experts and youngsters who will be attempting to establish a connection with the international stage.

On his YouTube channel, Aakash Chopra picked Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw as the openers in his squad while likewise naming the previous as the captain.

"Shikhar Dhawan the captain because we have seen in the last two years that he is upgrading his software and batting with great responsibility. Along with him, I am picking Prithvi Shaw. The form we have seen from him, I feel he should be the front-runner in this race," – he said.

"After that Shreyas Iyer if he is available. There is a talk of him playing county cricket but it would be better if you keep him for the six encounters here. Then Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan, although Mumbai Indians dropped him halfway through," added Aakash Chopra.
Aakash Chopra picked Hardik Pandya and Krunal Pandya to bat in the lower order and named Hardik as the vice-captain of his picked group.

"Hardik Pandya will be my vice-captain. And then Krunal Pandya. He played the last ODI series against England and performed well also," stated Chopra.
Aakash Chopra picked Yuzvendra Chahal, Deepak Chahar, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar as three of the frontline bowlers in his XI.

"After that Yuzi Chahal. Deepak Chahar whose performances have been outstanding with the white-ball. He should be given a chance in ODIs as well. If Bhuvi and he bowl together, our powerplay problem of not taking wickets can also be sorted out," said Chopra.

"After that Navdeep Saini, he has also been kept in cold storage. Neither India is playing him nor RCB. But I will keep him in my team because he was part of the team when India went to Australia and played a Test match also," - he said.

Aakash Chopra named Ruturaj Gaikwad/Devdutt Padikkal, Khaleel Ahmed or Jaydev Unadkat, and Kuldeep Yadav as stores for Shreyas Iyer, T Natarajan, and Varun Chakravarthy separately, if any of them is inaccessible.

"There is a question mark about T Natarajan's injury. But if he is fit, he will go off course. Rahul Chahar and Varun Chakravarthy are the two extra spinners I have kept. I have also given place to Prasidh Krishna in my team," - he added.

"Sanju Samson and Deepak Hooda, I will keep both these players. Sanju Samson has been playing good cricket, scored a century this year as well. Deepak Hooda has shown that he can be an explosive batsman at No.6 or No.7 and he can bowl a bit of off-spin," Aakash Chopra concluded.

Veteran opener Shikhar Dhawan and all-rounder Hardik Pandya are being touted as the captaincy options for Team India if Shreyas Iyer doesn’t get fit for the white-ball series against Sri Lanka in July.

India’s limited-overs specialists will head to the island nation to play three T20Is and as many ODIs against Sri Lanka in the second half of July. Interestingly, the big guns like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah among others will be in England for a five-match Test series.

"It is still not clear if Shreyas will recover fully and will be match-fit in time for tour of Sri Lanka. Normally, a surgery of this scale along with rest, extensive rehab and training to get back in shape takes around four months," a senior BCCI source privy to selection matters told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

"In case Shreyas was available, he would have been the automatic choice for captaincy."

IPL 2021: Delhi Capitals humble Punjab Kings with well-constructed chase

Delhi Capitals on Sunday continued their dominating run of form in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 as they defeated Punjab Kings by seven wickets at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. DC, with the win, move atop the IPL 2021 standings as they impress yet again under the captaincy of Rishabh Pant.

Batting first, Punjab Kings, without KL Rahul, lost opener Prabhsimran Singh for 12 early in the innings. Chris Gayle, who smashed a six and four, was sent packing by Kagiso Rabada for 13. Making his IPL debut, world number one T20I batsman Dawid Malan struggled during his stay on the pitch and was dismissed by Axar Patel after a watchful 26 off 26 balls.

The middle-order and lower-middle order for PBKS failed with the likes of Deepak Hooda (1), Shahrukh Khan (4), Chris Jordan (2) falling cheaply as DC bowlers ran riot. However, Mayank continued to flourish and scored a breathtaking 99 not-out off 58 deliveries laced by eight boundaries and four sixes, to take Punjab Kings to a competitive total of 166/6 in 20 overs.

Chasing 169, Delhi Capitals lost Prithvi Shaw after a brisk start with the right-handed batsman continuing his good run of form with a 22-ball 39. Steven Smith, at number 3, scored 24 off 22 before Riley Meredith sent him packing back to the hut. Rishabh Pant looked to finish the chase early and was dismissed looking for a big hit for an 11-ball 14. However, Shikhar Dhawan, now the highest run-scorer in IPL 2021, finished the chase for DC along with Shimron Hetmyer.

Rishabh Pant looked to finish the chase early and was dismissed looking for a big hit for an 11-ball 14. IPL 2021: Shikhar Dhawan dominates again as Delhi Capitals defeat Punjab Kings

Delhi Capitals will look to keep up their momentum when they take on each of the franchises for the second time in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021. The Delhi Capitals, who defeated Kolkata Knight Riders by seven wickets in their previous game on Thursday, have won five out of seven matches in the ongoing season.

Speaking about the team's performance in the competition so far, the JSW and GMR co-owned franchise opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan said, "We are performing very well as a team this season. We have won five out of seven matches, so we are in a pretty good position at the moment. The good thing is that the entire team is doing well, and we are not depending on any one individual. There has always been someone who has taken the responsibility to win matches for us. We have a strong side, and I am glad that we are in this position at the moment."

Dhawan had the best seat in the house when his opening partner Prithvi Shaw struck six fours in an over against KKR. The 35-year-old said that Prithvi showed a lot of courage during his innings of 82 runs from 41 balls, "It was lovely to see Prithvi strike six boundaries in one over in the last game. We got 25 runs in the first over and the game was over there itself. He made the game easy for me as I didn't have to take any risks. Prithvi was in a good flow, and he backed himself to continue scoring runs in that flow, which I think shows a lot of courage he has as a batsman. His innings of 80-odd is bigger than many centuries because the manner in which he got the runs was of a different class altogether.

The Delhi Capitals are set to take on Punjab Kings in their next match here at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday, 02 May 2021. Dhawan expressed that the Delhi franchise is looking forward to registering another win in the competition, "The Punjab Kings are a good side. We cannot take any team in the IPL lightly. We have to make sure that we give our best and implement our plans properly every time we step on the field. They are playing well at the moment, and we respect that, but at the same time we are looking forward to beating them and win another match in our campaign."

Race to Orange Cap: Top 5 batsmen in Indian Premier League 2020

Kings XI Punjab had a comfortable 5-wicket win against Delhi Capitals in Match 38 of the 2020 IPL, at Dubai. Delhi put up 164/5, a score largely made possible by Shikhar Dhawan, who batted through the innings with an unbeaten 106 in 61 balls. Having slammed 101 not out in his previous match, against Chennai, Dhawan became the first in IPL history to score hundreds in consecutive matches.

However, that turned out to be inadequate once Chris Gayle (29 in 13) launched a furious onslaught, following which Nicholas Pooran (53 in 28) and Glenn Maxwell (32 in 24) added 69 in 40 balls. Punjab won with an over to spare.

In My11 Circle Cricbuzz Live, Lisa Sthalekar lauded Dhawan’s superb effort: “He picked up where he had left off [against Chennai]. His ability to play the spinners really well was an element of this game that just keeps building.”

“What I loved was the way he swept – the sweeps and the slog-sweeps because they targeted him with the off-spinner,” concurred Joy Bhattacharjya. “He changed the angle. It was not going to square leg. Because it was coming in down and coming early, he could pick his gap.

Reminding that Dhawan holds the IPL record for most fours hit, Bhattacharjya added: “He is basically a four-hitter … Fours are his bread and butter. He finds the gaps, finds them consistently, and because of his game, he finds them safely as well.”

It was an easy win in the end, Punjab had multiple lapses. “The biggest enemy or the toughest opposition Kings XI have is Kings XI themselves. Their previous record, the number of times they have stuffed up … Somehow they managed to keep Delhi in the match.”

Gayle took 26 off the fifth over during the chase, putting Punjab on track. “You can see how determined he was and how frustrated and annoyed when he got out. This is actually a key sign for Punjab … If Christopher Henry Gayle is caring that much … means that he is hungrier, and he wants more runs.”

Kings XI Punjab jumped past Rajasthan Royals to secure the fifth spot. Despite the defeat, however, Delhi Capitals stayed on the top.

Chennai Super Kings won the toss and chose to bat. Sam Curran and Faf du Plessis came out as openers for CSK. But Curran was dismissed in the third delivery of the first over. However, Watson and du Plessis stitched an 87-run partnership to keep CSK in the loop. Du Plessis scored the most runs (58 runs off 47 balls) for CSK tonight. After their dismissal, Rayudu and Jadeja's quick 50-run partnership powered CSK to 179 runs.

Delhi Capitals started off the chase in a similar fashion as Prithvi Shaw was out in the second ball itself. Rahane also got out quickly. However, the partnership between Shreyas Iyer and Dhawan kept Delhi in the game. Dhawan was dropped thrice by CSK fielders and those misfields cost Chennai the match as the opener went on to smash an unbeaten century. However, the equation in the final over was still tight as DC needed 17 runs in the 20th over. Axar Patel's three sixes in the final over did not let Dhawan's knock go in vain. Delhi won the match with a ball to spare.

With this win, Delhi Capitals go on top of the IPL table. Shikhar Dhawan was adjudged the Player of the Match for his knock (101 runs off 58 balls).

IPL 2020: Shikhar Dhawan's century helps Delhi beat Chennai by 5 wickets

Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan is hoping that the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 is successfully held later in the year as the swashbuckling southpaw opined that the tournament brings a lot of positivity. The veteran batsman said that it is crucial for sports to come back to life in India as it improves the environment and mood.

“Hopefully, the IPL will happen. I always think in a positive manner. It will be really good if the tournament goes ahead... the security of everyone will need to be taken care of. If it happens, it will be really good as it brings a lot of positivity,” Dhawan told Sri Lanka allrounder Angelo Mathews in an Instagram live video chat.

“It’s very important that some sports return to improve the environment and mood... it will have a huge impact if the IPL returns.”

Dhawan accepted that playing without any fans in the stadiums would not bring the same feeling in the IPL as they bring their own charm into games but added everyone would be hungry to perform and give their best on the field whenever live cricket returns. Earlier, Indian skipper Virat Kohli had said matches without crowd won’t have “same magic” in matches.

“Obviously, we are going to miss playing in front of a huge crowd if tournaments take place behind closed doors, the fans bring their own charm and aura, but at the same time, it would be an opportunity as we have been sitting at our homes for two months now,” the batsman added.

“Once we go back, we all will be very hungry to play and perform for our teams, it is going to be good fun, at the end of the day, when we are playing, it is always a good feeling.”
