DDCA director Shyam Sharma provides latest update on Rishabh Pant's recovery

On Tuesday (June 27), the International Cricket Council (ICC) released the much-awaited full schedule of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 edition, to be held in India in October-November. Defending champions England will open their campaign versus New Zealand whereas hosts India will face Australia, in Chennai, on October 08 in their opening encounter. After the schedule was out, former cricketers and experts opined on every team's chances and Kris Srikkanth, part of Kapil Dev-led India's 1983 ODI World Cup win, made a big statement.

Srikkanth believes India will miss Rishabh Pant's services, who is unlikely to regain full fitness after a horrific car accident on December 30, 2022. "We don't know the real truth about Rishabh Pant. Because Rishabh Pant, if he was playing, I would have straightaway said that India are the real favourites for the World Cup. But I think obviously, Rishabh Pant's fitness is questionable. Nobody knows how fit will he be before the World Cup. I doubt it. Many people doubt if he will play the 2023 World Cup. Otherwise, the Rishabh Pant factor would have been very crucial," said Srikkanth while speaking to India Today.

However, Srikkanth was quick to add that Rohit Sharma-led Men in Blue have enough firepower to go the distance in the showpiece event in India. "So I believe guys like KL Rahul (who is recovering from a thigh injury) should be back in the middle order. KL Rahul has been fantastic. We have Rohit Sharma opening with Shubman Gill. Then we have Virat Kohli, who has been fantastic in this format and he has been in form. I believe India has got the capabilities of winning the World Cup," said Srikkanth.

At present, Indian players such as Pant, KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer and Jasprit Bumrah are recovering from their respective injuries. While Pant is very much out of contention, as India would certainly not risk playing him soon even if he recovers fully, Rahul, Iyer and Bumrah are expected to regain fitness just before the ODI WC. In such a scenario, India will be in a tough spot as the trio won't be having enough game time heading into the World Cup.

India will open their campaign versus Australia, face Pakistan on October 15 in Ahmedabad, New Zealand on October 22 in Dharamshala, England on October 29 in Lucknow and South Africa on November 05 in Kolkata apart from also facing Afghanistan, Bangladesh and the other two teams from the qualifiers.

If he was playing, would've said India are real favourites for ODI WC: Former Indian opener on star player

India‘s star wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant has surprised the medical team at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru as he fast-tracks his recovery. Pant, who was injured in a near career-ending accident in December 2022, has been rehabilitating at the NCA and will try to make it to the World Cup squad in October. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has been keeping a close eye on Pant’s recovery as they try to find a way for him to make the showpiece event in India in October.

Pant surprises medical staff

According to a report published by Espncricinfo, Pant has been doing good and has fast-tracked his progress as he prepares to get fit for the ODI World Cup in India. After injuring his leg, ribs, and back in the accident in December, he has been out of action and missed the game since the turn of the year. He missed India’s home series against New Zealand, Sri Lanka, and Australia, while also staying out of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 season.

The severity of the injury also kept him out of action in the World Test Championship (WTC) final against Australia as well.

In a video posted recently by Pant, he was seen walking without crutches and climbing steps without any support. The Delhi Capitals captain has been focused on his recovery and has opted to make use of different rehab techniques in the NCA to fast-track his recovery. He has made use of aqua therapy, light swimming, and table tennis while he tries to add muscle in the recovery.

India’s big loss

India has paid a big prize for Pant’s absence from the team as his form in the Test side could have proved vital for India. His presence in the Indian team during the WTC final might have led to a different outcome for the national side. He last played for the Indian side in December 2022 in the Bangladesh tour and was injured consequently.

On the horizon, the report also mentioned Jasprit Bumrah and Shreyas Iyer’s recovery, as they too try to make the World Cup. Like Pant, both Bumrah and Iyer missed the IPL and have been out of action, but could now be available for the Asia Cup if they pass the fitness test.

Rishabh Pant surprises medical staff as injured star fast-tracks recovery at NCA

No. 1 ranked India are set to lock horns with Australia in the forthcoming ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final versus Australia at The Oval, London on June 07. Being without an ICC title since 2013, Rohit Sharma & Co. will be eager to lift their first-ever major title in the upcoming clash. However, it won't be an easy task versus Pat Cummins-led Australia.

Ahead of the WTC finale, India have plenty of injury concerns, with several key players, such as Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, Jasprit Bumrah, etc. out of action. Thus, former Australian opener Matthew Hayden made his pick for India's wicketkeeper-batter slot for the marquee finale. He feels India should go ahead with uncapped player Ishan Kishan instead of KS Bharat in Pant's absence.

Speaking to PTI, Hayden suggested, "One of the big losses to Indian cricket right now is Rishabh Pant. If I was an Indian selector, I certainly go with the more dynamic wicketkeeper batter Ishan Kishan, he also adds that bit of swagger to the batting lineup and in the fielding unit as well."

Ishan has not yet made his Test debut. He was in the squad in the 2022/23 Border-Gavaskar Trophy versus Australia, held in India, but didn't get a game. Bharat made his debut and did a decent job behind the stumps -- albeit with a few fumbles -- and looked promising with the bat with a best of 44. While Ishan is a like-for-like replacement for Pant, with both the southpaws being aggressive with the bat, Bharat is more of a steady batter.

It will be interesting to see if Rohit & Co. opt for Ishan and drop Bharat for the mega finale. Further, Hayden also said that India should play both R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja in the playing XI.

In this regard, he said, "What works for India is two spinners. It doesn't work for Australia, apart from the outrageous turners that we saw in India during the Border-Gavaskar trophy."

''I know the Australian combination will always want to have three quicks. Obviously, Nathan Lyon is our spinner and Cameron Green can play as an all-rounder. I mean, that's, that's how important Cameron Green is. That's a powerful and important role that he plays as an all-rounder. So it's great to have him in form,'' Hayden added.

India should go ahead with Ishan Kishan in Rishabh Pant's absence in WTC Final, says former Aussie opener

Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant's recovery following a horrific car crash in December 2022 has been better than expected, and the star player is soon to move to the playing phase in his comeback process, Times of India reported. The media outlet quoted a Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) official who informed about these developments.

The report also says that the left-hander didn't have multiple surgeries as expected before, but was monitored every fortnight to note the development and progress.

"Let's make it clear that Pant never had multiple surgeries, as was speculated. There was much anxiety over another surgery," said the report quoting a BCCI official abreast with the matter.

"He was monitored every fortnight. Fortunately, his progress has been better than expected. This is a big boost for him. It could mean his comeback can happen a lot earlier than what was earlier expected."

The report further informed about Pant's condition and mentioned that the player was in good spirits.

"He is in good spirits. He can now walk considerably longer without the crutch. The focus of his rehab is now largely on strengthening. He should be in the back-to-play phase training soon," said the official quoted in the report.

Pant missed out on the just-concluded Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 following the accident and is set to miss the upcoming World Test Championship (WTC) Final against Australia in England as well. The 25-year-old has also been ruled out of the Asia Cup tournament and the ICC ODI World Cup to be held in India late this year as well.

While Pant's absence is surely a big blow for the Indian side in WTC Final, former Australia skipper and Pant's IPL franchise Delhi Capitals' coach Ricky Ponting has opined that Pant, like Ishan Kishan who has been included in India's WTC squad, should be given a chance in the playing XI.

"He was monitored every fortnight. Fortunately, his progress has been better than expected. This is a big boost for him. It could mean his comeback can happen a lot earlier than what was earlier expected." Also Read: French Open: Second seed Daniil Medvedev STUNNED by Brazil's Thiago Wild in first round The report further informed about Pant's condition and mentioned that the player was in good spirits. Rishabh Pant soon to get back to playing phase of rehab: Report

Former Aussie great Ian Chappell feels injuries to ace seamer Jasprit Bumrah and attacking keeper-batter Rishabh Pant will badly affect India as they gear up to take on Australia in the WTC final in June next month. Writing for ESPNcricinfo, Chappell said had the pair been fit, India would have started as favourites, but that's not the case now.

With both heavyweights of world cricket ready to battle for the ultimate glory in Tests, India and Australia have some issues to iron out before getting underway at Oval Cricket Ground on June 7th. Chappell further opines considering both teams haven't played a single Test since competing in the Border-Gavaskar series early this year, it is hard to predict a winner.

"As it should be, this is a hard match to predict. That's mainly because of injury concerns, and neither team has played a Test since completing a hard-fought series earlier this year. To make matters even more difficult, many of the players involved have only competed in the IPL in the lead-up to the one-off Test," Chappell wrote in his column for ESPNcricinfo.

Sharing his views on what makes him believe that Australia will start as favourites instead, Ian wrote,

"If Australia's classy pace trio of Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood are available, that makes them slight favourites. They are good bowlers any time, but England in early June should be right up their alley," Chappell said.

Mental strength will decide the winner - Ian Chappell

Chappell added both sides will come up their A-game, and unless the weather plays a spoilsport, the team who will show more resilience will take the game home.

"Mental strength will play a huge part in this Test. The team that displays the most resilience is likely to win as long as the contest is not unduly affected by bad weather. Being able to maintain a decent line and length under attack is now mandatory in the tougher series, and a fully fit Australian attack should benefit if the opposition are overzealous," Ian wrote.

However, looking into India's likely XI, there won't be match-winners in Bumrah and Pant, as both are out for an indefinite period owing to respective injuries, while Chappell feels their absence pulls India back regarding entering the contest as hot favourites.

"The injuries to Jasprit Bumrah and Rishabh Pant badly affect India, as they would be outright favourites with these two playing. The somewhat surprising unavailability of allrounder Hardik Pandya also harms India, as he could have provided them with the final piece of the jigsaw puzzle," Chappell said.

WTC Final 2023: Injuries to Bumrah, Pant to badly affect India, Aussies to start as favourites - Ian Chappell

Delhi Capitals (DC) have had a torrid run in IPL 2023. The David Warner-led side were on the back foot before the ongoing season commenced with regular captain Rishabh Pant out of action after a horrific accident on December 30, 2022. Since the start of the season, DC struggled for momentum and while they did achieve some inspiring wins, they became the first team to be eliminated this season after two back-to-back defeats in the last week.

Ever since Ricky Ponting was appointed as the DC head coach, ahead of IPL 2018 (back when the franchise was known as the Delhi Daredevils), the franchise has done considerably well (reaching the playoffs thrice and playing their first-ever final in 2020 edition). However, Ponting-led team management have been criticised for their team combination, underutilisation of key players, etc. in IPL 2023. Thus, former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan has suggested Sourav Ganguly's name as DC's next head coach.

GANGULY AS NEXT DC COACH?

"Sourav Ganguly's presence in the Delhi dugout is a big deal. I think if Dada is given the responsibility of coach as well, he can make a big difference in this team. Dada has knowledge of the psychology of Indian players. He knows how to run the dressing room and Delhi should definitely take advantage of that. At the time of the toss, Warner has said that his team has now started preparing for the next season and in this context, it would not be wrong to see Ganguly in a changed role," said Pathan.

Ganguly was part of the DC setup in IPL 2019 as the team advisor before he came back into the setup as the Director of Cricket before IPL 2023. Ganguly has led IPL teams in the past, such as the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and the now-defunct Pune Warriors (PWI), but never donned the coaching hat. It will be interesting to see if the DC team management remains intact following their dismal run in IPL 2023. If Ponting is sacked, Ganguly can be a worthy successor.

Only time will tell if DC back their under-fire team management or make wholesome changes ahead of IPL 2024.

India's wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant is set to miss the 2023 ICC ODI World Cup as he still is away from full recovery following a horrible car accident in December 2022.

Pant will also be missing the World Test Championship (WTC) final to be played against Australia in England in June and so as Asia Cup. The developments are part of a report by the media outlet Cricbuzz which also says that Pant is still seven to eight months away from being able to start playing cricket again.

On a positive side, the reports also says that the left-handed batsman is recuperating faster than expected and will be able to walk without the crutches in span of a couple of weeks. Nonetheless, a return to cricket in January 2024 would mean an year of absence for Pant who had established himself as India's first choice wicketkeeper in Tests at least.

Given Pant's absence, KL Rahul could be India's designated keeper-batsman in ODIs for the World Cup and Asia Cup while players like Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan could also find themselves in the mix.

Rishabh Pant set to miss 2023 ICC ODI World Cup, claims report

Delhi Capitals regular captain Rishabh Pant visited his teammates at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru ahead of his team’s away clash against RCB on Saturday. Pant, who earlier had come to watch Delhi’s home game against Gujarat on April 4th, was seen walking with crutches.

Not only this, but he also left a comment for Ricky Ponting’s son on social media.

After suffering several injuries in a horrific road accident in late December last year, Rishabh Pant underwent surgery on his knee and got ruled out for an extensive period. In his absence, Delhi Capitals named veteran Aussie batter David Warner as the skipper for this season, while Axar Patel got picked as his deputy.

IPL 2023: Rishabh Pant visits DC's training session ahead of RCB clash, writes comment for a 'Future Star'

Delhi Capitals' Rishabh Pant caught up with his teammates on the sidelines of the team's training session at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru ahead of their TATA IPL 2023 match against Royal Challengers Bangalore. Pant is currently undergoing rehabilitation and recovery at the National Cricket Academy.

When asked about his recovery, Pant said, "I am recovering very well and I'm getting better with each passing day. I came to visit the National Cricket Academy and the Delhi Capitals happened to be there. So I met the team." Pant further added, "I just saw how the team's practice is carrying on. I really love to be around the boys and I am missing it."

IPL 2023: 'I am recovering well,' says Rishabh Pant ahead of DC's tie vs RCB

The David Warner-led Delhi Capitals (DC) have not had a bright start to the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 edition. On Tuesday (April 04), the Delhi franchise locked horns with the defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) and lost by six wickets in defence of 163 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi. Thus, this was DC's second defeat in a row. The current season is a litmus test for the 2020 runners-up as they are without their regular captain Rishabh Pant.

After suffering a horrific car accident, on December 30 2022, Pant has been out of cricketing action and is on the road to recovery. The swashbuckling left-hander will take a long time to recover and attain match fitness before he once again represents Team India and the DC camp. Ahead of DC's second game in IPL 2023, against GT, Director of Cricket Operations Sourav Ganguly, former India captain and BCCI chief, opined on Pant's absence and urged other star players to step up with him missing out.

'Rishabh Pant became better since MS Dhoni stopped playing'

“Obviously the team will miss Rishabh, but this is an opportunity for others to step up. We will miss him (Rishabh) for the season as players like (Jasprit) Bumrah, Rishabh and Shreyas are not replaceable in franchise tournaments and best are distributed to all teams. I see this as an opportunity for someone to become better because Rishabh became better since MS Dhoni stopped playing. That’s the way players are produced. You see (Shubman) Gill getting better, Rutu (Ruturaj Gaikwad) playing well, so it’s an opportunity. Rishabh will be missed but most important is his recovery,” Ganguly told reporters.

IPL 2023: Delhi Capitals name Abhishek Porel as Rishabh Pant's replacement ahead of season opener

Bengal keeper-batter Abhishek Porel is set to replace injured Rishabh Pant at Delhi Capitals (DC). The India international is currently recovering from the injuries he suffered in a horrific road accident late last year that ruled him out for most of 2023.

An IPL source close to the information revealed that Delhi Capitals have zeroed in on the young 21-year-old Abhishek as Pant’s replacement; and that, under the supreme guidance of the coach Ricky Ponting and Director of Cricket Sourav Ganguly, Abhishek can learn and grow in a better space.

"Delhi Capitals are likely to put forth Abhishek Porel's name as Rishabh's replacement for the current season. He is only 21, and under the guidance of Ricky Ponting and Sourav Ganguly, could be groomed as a second option even after Rishabh comes back," an IPL source told PTI on the condition of anonymity.

While Delhi is adding up local wicket-keeping options from their end, the in-form Mumbai batter, Sarfaraz Khan, is likely to take up the keeper’s role for the upcoming IPL 2023. England’s Phil Salt could also be one of the options behind the wickets in some matches.

"As of now, it looks like Sarfaraz will start against Lucknow Super Giants and if the experiment works, then he will continue," the source added.

Earlier, during their first camp in Kolkata, DC had called Porel, Karnataka’s Luvnith Sisodia and Saurashtra’s Sheldon Jackson for the trials. While Jackson is someone who has played in the IPL before, at 36, he wasn’t the best option to go ahead with. Whereas Luvnith and Abhishek impressed the DC management, Ganguly and Ponting appeared to go ahead with Porel.

Porel, in his short career so far, has scored six half-centuries in 16 first-class games, in addition to having 66 dismissals with the gloves to his name.

Meanwhile, Delhi will open its IPL 2023 campaign against Lucknow Super Giants on April 1st.

He is only 21, and under the guidance of Ricky Ponting and Sourav Ganguly, could be groomed as a second option even after Rishabh comes back," an IPL source told PTI on the condition of anonymity. ALSO READ: ICC bashes reports of Pakistan playing its 2023 World Cup matches in Bangladesh: Sources While Delhi is adding up local wicket-keeping options from their end, the in-form Mumbai batter, Sarfaraz Khan, is likely to take up the keeper’s role for the upcoming IPL 2023.

Virender Sehwag had a stellar run at the international level. The former Team India opener ended his illustrious career with 8,586, 8,273 and 394 runs in Tests, ODIs and T20Is respectively. He was known for his fearless style of batting. Since his retirement, Indian cricket have had fearless batters such as Rohit Sharma and Harmanpreet Kaur but many a times former cricketers come up with the cliched 'He reminds me of Sehwag' phrase when youngsters play a blazing knock.

However, Sehwag feels there is no player in the Indian team who bats like him but named Rishabh Pant as the one who comes closest to his batting approach. Sehwag also urged Pant to up his game so that he scores daddy hundreds like him.

"I don't think so there is any player in the Indian team who bats like me. The two players who came to my mind who have come close to it are Prithvi Shaw and Rishabh Pant. I think Rishabh Pant is a little bit close to what I used to bat like in Test cricket but he is satisfied with 90-100 but I used to score 200, 250 and 300 and then be content. If he took his game to that level then I think he can entertain the fans even more," Sehwag said during News18 India Chaupal.

Talking about the Delhi Capitals (DC), they dealt with a huge blow when their regular skipper Rishabh Pant got involved in a horrific car crash last year. As the star Indian keeper-batter is out of action for quite some time, the Delhi camp recently named David Warner as their captain for IPL 2023. On March 16 (Thursday), the official Twitter handle of the DC franchise shared a tweet to share the news with one and all. While the Aussie opener Warner was named the captain, India's star all-rounder Axar Patel will serve as his deputy for the forthcoming edition.
India and Australia are set to face each in the World Test Championship (WTC) final in June in England after both teams secured a spot for the marquee clash during the recently-concluded Border-Gavaskar series. India were without Jasprit Bumrah and Rishabh Pant but managed to win the series 2-1.

With both Bumrah and Pant sidelined for the WTC final too due to injuries, former India batsman Sunil Gavaskar wants India to consider KL Rahul as wicket-keeper over Pant's replacement KS Bharat.
Speaking to media outlet Sports Tak, Gavaskar said, "You can see KL Rahul as a wicketkeeper. If he bats at No. 5 or 6 at the Oval (in the WTC final) then our batting will be stronger.
Gavaskar suggested the change after Dinesh Karthik highlighted issues in KS Bharat's technique on air during the Ahmedabad Test between India and Australia.

"Dinesh Karthik summed up the problems with his wicketkeeping quite beautifully. The real test of a wicketkeeper is on pitches like these where the ball is turning. If you look at Travis Head's dismissal, when the ball turned and hit his stumps, KS Bharat's gloves were nowhere near the ball. That means, if the ball hadn't hit the stumps, it would have resulted in 4 byes. This is definitely a cause for concern. Whether they will select him in the XI or not is up to the selection committee but in England, you won't get pitches where the keeper has to stand up to the stumps. In that case, you can pick KL Rahul as a wicketkeeper and even Ishan Kishan can be considered. Their batting is better than Bharat's," Gavaskar said.

Rahul was also removed as the vice-captain of the side and Shubman Gill was roped in for the last two Tests as a batter. Gill made an immediate impact at the top and scored a century in India's first innings in the last Test.

WTC Final, 2023: Former India opener Sunil Gavaskar wants THIS batsman to replace KS Bharat as wicket-keeper

On December 30, 2022, Rishabh Pant had a horrific accident in the Delhi-Dehradun highway. Suffering several injuries, the swashbuckling wicketkeeper-batter is out of action for quite some time and former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly recently opened up on Pant's likely return in the national side. Ganguly, who is with the Delhi Capitals in a management role for IPL 2023, feels the Indian star cricketer might take up to two years to return in the Indian team.

"I spoke to him a couple of times. Obviously he is going through a tough period, through injuries and surgeries and I wish him well. In a year's time or may be in a couple of years' time, he will be back playing for India," Ganguly was quoted as saying by PTI.

Rishabh Pant is currently recovering well post his horrific car accident on December 30, 2022. While he will certainly be out of action for quite some time, the 25-year-old has made a mark in international cricket especially in the post-Covid era. The going hasn't been easy for Pant, who has often been compared to MS Dhoni, pointed out for his keeping skills and ordinary T20I record but the young keeper-batter has weathered all storms to be India's first-choice stumper across formats.

R Sridhar, India's former fielding coach, recently revealed how he was often annoyed by Pant's stubborness. In his book 'Coaching Beyond', Sridhar narrated how he struggled working with Pant initially before the youngster slowly and steadily followed his inputs to hone his keeping skills and improve overall.

"There were some inputs he was little reluctant to take. Because he trusted the game that had brought him to this level. Sometimes, I must confess, it drove me nuts, his stubbornness. But getting angry or frustrated wasn't going to help anyone. I had to find a way to get Rishabh to try and do different things, if only for him to figure out if those changes might actually be beneficial to his keeping," Sridhar wrote in his book.

"After a while he walked up to me and said 'Sir, you aren't saying anything. Please tell me what to do. Smiling inwardly, I said 'Maybe you should lead with your head and not with your hands'. Satisfied at having got me to shed my silence, he did precisely that. As the head led the way, so did the body and he was more assured in collecting the ball."

At present, the Indian cricket fans are desperately hoping for Pant to recover and return to the Indian team as soon as possible. Given the horrific accident he suffered, it will take time before he returns to the 22-yard cricket strip. He is set to miss IPL 2023 and might also be ruled out of this year's ODI World Cup on home soil.

In this latest column for ESPNcricinfo, veteran Australian captain Ian Chappell wrote about Rishabh Pant saying his absence in the Test side could hurt India’s chances of claiming yet another Test series win over the Oz. Adding India’s main aim during the Test series would be to find an apt replacement for Pant, who was known for changing the course of the game in a session itself with his ultra-attacking approach. As for India to qualify for the finals of the ICC Test Championship they must beat Australia 4-0 at home; and while in Pant’s absence, Chappell feels India will have a uphill task at their disposal. The Indian team management roped in hard-hitting Ishan Kishan and specialist keeper-batter KS Bharat as keepers for first two Tests.

"India also have some points to prove, not the least to do with how Pant's replacement performs. The main thing India will lose from Pant's unavailability is an excellent run rate, which came from his belligerent aggression. No one can replace Pant's desire to dominate bowlers, so India have to rely on their top batters not only performing but also maintaining a good strike rate," Chappell wrote in his column.

He is currently recovering following his surgery on the ligament in his knee, that took place in Mumbai recently. As per reports, Pant will remain out of action for at least good three to six months or even more depending on the nature of his recovery.

Meanwhile, Chappell feels Australia will be relying heavily on Nathan Lyon to pick wickets on regular intervals like how he did in the Bengaluru Test six years ago – where he scalped eight wickets in the first innings on day one. But if India’s top three – Rohit, Pujara and Kohli are able to dominate Australia’s mainstay, then Oz would have to return to its pacers to get them wickets.

"One of the main tasks for Indian players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara will be to establish mental superiority over Lyon. If Australia can't rely on Lyon claiming regular wickets at an acceptable rate, their bowling will then depend greatly on the 'big three'," Chappell added.

Cricket has changed a lot since the invention of T20 format. Not only in the manner of how it is played and approached, in the way of how it will be led heading forward as well. While a little more than a decade back a single captain leading a team across formats was considered normal but now with the surge in the franchise-based T20 cricket and with everyone trying to try their hand at everything available, this doesn’t look like a reality. Expressing his opinion on the same, former India opener Aakash Chopra said the days of a single captain leading in all formats are now over.

Rishabh Pant accident case: Know how many years Pant will take to recover; huge setback for team India

MS Dhoni achieved almost everything in his glittering cricketing career. Having debuted in late 2004, he became a household name very soon and led India from 2007 to 2016. Under him, India won all major ICC titles and even attained the No. 1 spot in Tests. He himself made the right noise, ending with 17,266 runs, 108 half-centuries, 16 tons, 634 catches, 359 sixes and 195 stumpings.

During the 2019 ICC ODI World Cup, in England and Wales, many believed that it was Dhoni's last international event. After Virat Kohli-led India's semi-final exit, the keeper-batter surprised one and all by not announcing his retirement and took a sabbatical for the rest of the year. In early 2020, Covid-19 pandemic struck the world and when IPL was set to kickoff in September-October, in the UAE, Dhoni stepped aside from international cricket on August 15.

R Sridhar, India's former fielding coach, revealed an unheard story about Dhoni's retirement. He revealed that the legendary cricketer had dropped a massive retirement hint while in conversation with Rishabh Pant ahead of the reserve day's play between India and New Zealand in the first semi-final of CWC'19.

"I can now reveal that at the time of the interview to the BCCI, which I attended from Antigua, I was reasonably certain that for all practical purposes, MS had played his last match for the country. He hadn't announced it, of course, but I will tell you why I knew. On the morning of the reserve day in our World Cup semifinal against New Zealand in Manchester, I was the first person at the breakfast hall. I was nursing my coffee when MS and Rishabh walked in, picked up their stuff and joined me at my table," Sridhar wrote as he shared the incident in his book, ‘Coaching Beyond- My days with the Indian cricket team’

'No, Rishabh, I don't want to...': R Sridhar narrates unheard story about MS Dhoni's retirement

In 2022, as many as seven players led India at different times.
However, R Ashwin -- being one of the senior players -- has still never led India in any format.
