Rishabh Pant is an all-format keeper-batter for Team India. While his numbers in Tests are magnificent, with 2,123 runs in 31 matches including five tons and 10 half-centuries, he averages just 35 in ODIs -- with a solitary hundred in 29 games -- and an ordinary 22.43 in T20Is, along with a strike rate of 126.37. Thus, questions have been raised on India giving Pant a longer rope in limited-overs despite him still not performing at his best.

Before the start of the third and final ODI between India and New Zealand, in Christchurch, Pant had an on-air interaction with renowned broadcaster Harsha Bhogle. During the interaction, Bhogle spoke at length about Pant's ordinary white-ball numbers. To this, the 25-year-old gave a blunt reply while defending his overall run so far in limited-overs. Here's how the whole conversation panned out between the two:

Harsha Bhogle: "Maine Viru se bohut saal pahle ye sawal poocha tha, ab aap se puch raha hu. Aapko dekhke lagta hai, white-ball game inki khaas baat hogi but aapka Test record sabse accha hai. (Some years back, I'd asked the same question to Sehwag. Now, I'm asking you. Looking at you, we get the feeling that white-ball cricket is your USP but it's your Test record which has been better...)

Rishabh Pant: "Sir, record toh ek number hai. Mera white-ball record bhi kharab nahi hai. Thik hai T20 ka... (Sir, records are just mere numbers. My white-ball record is not bad. It is average in T20Is...)"

After being asked to bat first, India only managed a below-par 219 all-out in 47.3 overs with NZ being well-placed at 104/1 in 18 overs being rain played spoilsport and the match was called off eventually. NZ have won the three ODIs 1-0.

'No logic in comparing my performances until...': Rishabh Pant defends his white-ball record with blunt reply

After winning the three T20Is 1-0, India will lock horns with hosts New Zealand in the first of the three-match ODI series on Friday (November 25). Shikhar Dhawan will take charge of the side whereas Rishabh Pant will continue to don the deputy's hat, as he did in the T20Is with Hardik Pandya leading, as India will kick off their 2023 ODI World Cup preparations. Ahead of the series, a lot has been said and written about Pant, who hasn't impressed in the T20Is after limited opportunities in the T20 World Cup in Australia.

Thus, former Indian all-rounder Reetinder Singh Sodhi has made a big claim. The ex-cricketer feels Pant has been given a lot of opportunities in the limited-overs format but he is yet to deliver. While he did slam his maiden ODI hundred in the series win over hosts England in mid-July this year, he continues to remain unimpressive in the shortest format. In the NZ T20Is, he was given an opportunity to open the innings where he returned with 11 and 13, from five balls respectively. Hence, Sodhi feels it is time to try someone like Sanju Samson, who warmed the bench in the T20I series, as Pant has become a 'liability'.

"He (Pant) is becoming a liability for Team India. If it’s like this, then bring in Sanju Samson. End of the day, you got to take that chance because you cannot afford to lose and exit in World Cup or ICC tournaments," Sodhi was quoted as saying by India News. "When you give too many chances, problems arise. The time has come to provide opportunities to new guys." "Only time will tell how many opportunities and how long he gets. Time is passing and he really has to tighten his shoes. Everything has a limit. You cannot depend on one player for so long. If he is not performing, you got to show him the exit door," Sodhi added.

As per Sodhi, Pant remains a match-winner, but hasn't lived up to his tag and, hence, the selectors should take a call and look beyond him "We all know Rishabh Pant is a match-winner, but you don’t score runs. You don’t help your team win. You got the opportunity in an important event like the World Cup. I accept that initially he didn’t get the opportunity, but whenever you get a chance, your job is to perform, which has not happened. It’s time that selectors think beyond him." he concluded.

New Zealand after winning the toss elected to bowl first. Rishabh Pant got a chance to open the innings while Shreyas Iyer and Washington Sundar returned to the XI as well.

Pant failed to leave an impact, getting out to Ferguson on a 13-ball 6 whereas Ishan looked in good touch and was on 28 off 22 balls hitting four fours and a six before rain again halted the proceedings.

Senior India wicket-keeper batter Dinesh Karthik has urged the Indian team management to let Rishabh Pant open in T20Is. Pant found himself below Karthi in the pecking order in the recently-concluded T20 World Cup 2022 where he managed to play only two matches after warming the bench for the most part of the tournament.

Pant was touted as one of the future stars of Indian cricket when he first broke into the scene. His ability to take down any bowler on his day and his aggressive brand of cricket saw Pant being touted as India's first-choice keeper across all three formats.

While he has managed to prove his credentials in Test cricket with some heroic knocks for India, Pant's form in T20Is has been far from good. Despite possessing the natural ability to strike the ball well, Pant has struggled to play his game in the shortest format at the international level.

The lack of clarity when it comes to his role in the T20 team has also not helped Pant's cause when playing for India. He has not managed to nail down a spot in India's batting line-up and as a result, has been in and out of the T20 team over the last year. While he has been used majorly in the middle order by India, Karthik believes Pant can do wonders at the top.

"We know one thing for sure, Rishabh Pant's ability to play shots. And when the field is up, he can go gung-ho in the powerplay so we can give him the opportunity to open. Interestingly, stats also reflect that his strike rate is highest when he opens. He likes the field up, he likes to take on bowlers and put them under pressure," Karthik told Cricbuzz.

"I think it will be very interesting to see where they bat Rishabh Pant. Big question for Team India is how they will be using Rishabh Pant and I think we will be seeing him at the top of the order and trying to give him enough balls to showcase his skills. He is second to none when it comes to stroke play and has baffled a lot of international bowlers of high pedigree. We need to embrace the fact that there will be a few failures from him, but when he gets going, he is a terrific player to watch," he added.

Karthik was nowhere in the reckoning for a spot in India's squad for T20 World Cup 2022 a few months back. However, he made a strong comeback with a stellar campaign in IPL 2022 followed by some match-winning cameos as a finisher for India. His heroics saw him pip Pant to be India's first-choice keeper for the T20 World Cup.

However, Karthik failed to justify the faith shown in him and couldn't deliver with the bat. While he is unlikely to remain in the scheme of things in T20Is for India, the 37-year-old wants India to give Pant time in the shortest format and figure out his role in the team.

"I think Rishabh Pant has sealed his spot in Test cricket and to a large extent in ODI cricket as well. In T20s, he bats in a different position for his franchise and comes in a different spot in the Indian team and they are trying to figure out where to fit him," Karthik explained.

He can go gung-ho in the powerplay: Dinesh Karthik explains why Rishabh Pant should open in T20Is

India is set to take on New Zealand in the first of the three-match T20I series, in Wellington, on Friday (November 18). After the dismal end to their T20 World Cup 2022 campaign, in Australia, the Men in Blue will start a new cycle, keeping the next edition of the T20 WC in mind, with plenty of youngsters in focus. In the absence of many regular players such as captain Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, etc., the focus will be on stand-in captain Hardik Pandya, his deputy Rishabh Pant, Shubman Gill and the likes.

Ahead of the series opener, former Indian opener Wasim Jaffer has chosen a new batting slot for keeper-batter Pant. Many former cricketers believe Pant can be most effective if he bats higher up in the order. Jaffer has also backed the swashbuckling left-hander to open the innings in a series where India are without their key players. "The best place for Pant to bat is at the top of the order,” Jaffer was quoted as saying on ESPNcricinfo. “When fielders are up and Pant gets going at the start of the innings, he becomes a dangerous player like he bats in Tests and ODIs. Once he gets a start of 20-30, then he is dangerous. I don’t think fielders outside doesn’t matter to him,” the veteran further stated.

“When he comes in at No.5, the pressure is on him and it’s difficult for him to hit sixes. Pant is the kind of player you want to give India a blistering start,” Jaffer added.

Recently, Robin Uthappa -- part of MS Dhoni-led India's victorious 2007 T20 WC campaign -- also shared a similar opinion with regard to Pant's batting spot in the shortest format for Team India.

"The next World Cup is in two years' time. So, keeping the conditions there in mind, I feel Rishabh Pant should bat in the top 3," Uthappa told Sportskeeda in a recent interaction. "If you look at his IPL records, his best performances have come when he has opened or when he has batted at No. 3. So, you have to give him the opportunity to become a match-winner in that position," he further asserted.

Given India are eyeing a revamp in their playing style in T20Is, it might be possible that the team management can promote Pant as an opener.

'Best place for him is...' - Ex-India opener suggests batting position for Rishabh Pant ahead of NZ T20Is

After the disappointments of the T20 World Cup 2022 edition, Team India is now gearing up for their upcoming three-match T20I series versus hosts New Zealand. With many regulars not being part of the tour, Hardik Pandya will lead the side with Rishabh Pant as his deputy.

With a semi-final defeat in the recently-concluded T20 WC, in Australia, India will now look to revamp and restart with the next edition of the World Cup to be held in 2024. The NZ series can give a sneak peak into the mindset of the team. With regular skipper Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Virat Kohli and others not part of the tour, the young batters are expected to take more responsibility and get more chances at the top order. Amid all this, former Indian batter Robin Uthappa has suggested a new batting slot for Pant.

So far, the swashbuckling left-hander hasn't done anything extra ordinary in the shortest format and will hope to get going from the opening match itself versus the Kiwis. He has played 64 T20Is and has managed 970 runs at a strike rate of 127.12.

"The next World Cup is in two years' time. So, keeping the conditions there in mind, I feel Rishabh Pant should bat in the top 3," he told Sportskeeda. "If you look at his IPL records, his best performances have come when he has opened or when he has batted at No. 3. So, you have to give him the opportunity to become a match-winner in that position," he further opined. India's run in the T20 World Cup 2022 edition ended with a heavy defeat at the hands of eventual winners England in the semi-finals. Being asked to bat first, at the Adelaide Oval, Adelaide, Rohit Sharma-led India rode on half-centuries from Virat Kohli (40-ball 50) and Hardik Pandya (33-ball 63) to post an at-par total; 168 for 6. Nonetheless, it wasn't enough as England openers Jos Buttler (40-ball 80) and Alex Hales (46-ball 87 not out) chased down the target with an unbeaten 170-run opening stand with four overs to spare.

With this performance, India's T20 WC dreams were shattered and many have raised fingers at the team selection, captaincy and India's playing template in the shortest format. As wholesome changes are expected going ahead, former Indian chief selector and 1983 ODI World Cup-winning member Kris Srikkanth has named his choice on who should lead India in T20Is in the 2024 T20 World Cup, in West Indies and USA.

"See if I was the chairman of the selection committee, I would say that Hardik Pandya should be the captain of the 2024 World Cup, straight away, I had put it that way – number one," the former chief selector said in an interaction with Star Sports.

"And start rebuilding a side right from today, that is from the New Zealand series which is going to happen in a weeks' time. You start from today, the preparation for the World Cup, you need to understand, starts 2 years in advance. So, you do whatever you want to do, the trial and error policy, do whatever you want, try it for one year, then you form a team and by 2023 make sure this is going to be at the level that is going to play the World Cup," the former opener asserted.

Srikkanth also stressed the fact that India desperately need more fast bowling all-rounders. "You need more fast-ball all-rounders. Let’s see, 1983 World Cup, 2011 World Cup, 2007 T20 World Cup, why did we win? We had many fast-ball all-rounders and semi all-rounders. So, to identify these guys - guys like (Deepak) Hooda, like Hooda, there are going to be so many more Hoodas," he added.

Hardik-led India will now take on hosts New Zealand in three T20Is, starting on November 18, with many regulars being rested. Nonetheless, many have named Hardik as the next T20I captain and few good performances as a leader can see him attain the top post. At present, KL Rahul is Rohit's deputy across formats.

Hardik Pandya, KL Rahul or Rishabh Pant? Former chief selector names India's captain for 2024 T20 World Cup

India face a problem of plenty when it comes to deciding their playing XI as they gear up to lock horns with England in the semi-final of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2022. India will take on the Jos Buttler-led side in an all-important clash at the Adelaide Oval on Thursday with a place in the final on the line.

With Dinesh Karthik failing to impress in the tournament so far, there remain serious doubts over his place in the playing XI against England. The veteran wicket-keeper batter, who has played as the team's designated finisher in the tournament, has managed only 14 runs in four matches so far.

Amid his poor run with the bat, Rishabh Pant was slotted into India's playing XI in their last Super 12 clash against Zimbabwe on Sunday. However, Pant too failed to fire and was dismissed cheaply for just three runs. With the debate over the wicket-keeper's slot heating up in the build-up to the semi-final, former India head coach Ravi Shastri has revealed his pick.

Shastri believes India should pick Pant in their playing XI against England as he is a left-hander and also brings an 'x-factor' in the team. Pant has the ability to take down any bowling attack on his day but he has not managed to showcase his hitting prowess in T20Is so far.

"Dinesh is a lovely team player. But when it comes to a game against England or New Zealand, just seeing their attack, I think you need a robust left-hander, who can turn it on and a match-winner and a left-hander," Shastri said on Star Sport, explaining why India should play Pant against England.

"He has done well against England. He recently won a match on his win against England, a one-day game. I would go with Pant, not just because he played here, but because of the X-factor angle, he can bring to the semi-final," he added.

The semi-final will be played in Adelaide where the pitch has significant bounce and the boundaries are a bit shorter compared to other stadiums in Australia. Shastri believes having Pant in the XI will be crucial for India in such conditions, against a bowling attack of the caliber of England.

"You are playing in Adelaide, short boundaries square, another reason why a left-hander should be there to disrupt the England attack. If you have too many right-handers, there is a sense of sameness to it. England have a nice attack, a varied attack of left-handers and right-handers.

"You need a left-hander in your team, who can be dangerous and win you a game in the back overs even if you have lost 3 or 4 wickets at the top," Shastri explained.

Rishabh Pant or Dinesh Karthik? Ravi Shastri picks India's wicket-keeper for T20 WC semi-final vs England

Dinesh Karthik suffered an injury while keeping wickets during India's low-scoring thriller versus South Africa in the Men's T20 World Cup 2022, on Sunday (October 30) in Perth. After two successive wins, Rohit Sharma-led Men in Blue locked horns with Temba Bavuma's South Africa and managed only a modest 133 for 9, riding on Suryakumar Yadav's 40-ball 66.

In reply, the Proteas slipped and were reduced to 40 for 3 before fifties from Aiden Markram (52) and David Miller (59 not out) propelled them to a five-wicket win in the last over. During the run-chase, Karthik suffered a cramp on his back and left the field with Rishabh Pant donning the gloves in the final overs.

Ahead of India's next game, where they take on Bangladesh at the Adelaide Oval, Adelaide on Wednesday (November 02), head coach Rahul Dravid spilled the beans on Karthik and gave an update. In the pre-match presser, the former Indian captain said, "He's pulled up pretty well today. Unfortunately, he had that spasm when he jumped to collect a bouncer and then he landed badly, in a way that he did his back in a little bit. But with treatment and some days, he's pulled up pretty well this morning. He's come to training and so, we will be assessing it."

"We will see how it goes and how he pulls up tomorrow morning after a good practice session today. We will put him through his paces and ensure that we have given him a good workout and then see how he pulls up tomorrow morning before making a final decision," Dravid added.

Karthik has played his best T20I innings versus the Bangla Tigers, during the 2018 Nidahas Trophy final (wiht an unbeaten 8-ball 29*). Hence, he will be desperate to regain fitness and also return to his scoring ways after no such worthy contribution with the bat so far in the competition.

"India kept him out for Dinesh Karthik. They know Pant is a good player who will score a lot of runs but he can't be a finisher. At that specific number, they need a finisher. Pant might hit a couple of sixes but if he fails to finish the game, India will lose. That's the way to go)," he added.

They should play if they have them and are healthy."

Mohammad Amir, who was one of the guests at the show, agreed with what Wahab had to say. He said, "I agree with you. The Rishabh Pant - DK example he gave is absolutely spot on. When Ravindra Jadeja was ruled out of the T20 World Cup, they brought in Axar Patel and not another bowler. India believes in match-ups."

They know Pant is a good player who will score a lot of runs but he can't be a finisher. At that specific number, they need a finisher. Pant might hit a couple of sixes but if he fails to finish the game, India will lose. That's the way to go)," he added. There should be a selection procedure; for instance, if your criteria are to appraise domestic performances, you must determine whether or not Amir, Umar Gul, Shoaib Akhtar, or Sohail Tanvir have performed there. They should play if they have them and are healthy." Mohammad Amir, who was one of the guests at the show, agreed with what Wahab had to say. He said, "I agree with you. The Rishabh Pant - DK example he gave is absolutely spot on. When Ravindra Jadeja was ruled out of the T20 World Cup, they brought in Axar Patel and not another bowler. India believes in match-ups." 'If Pant was in Pakistan team...': Ex-player slams Pak's team selection for T20 World Cup

Former India captain Kapil Dev has urged the Indian team management to play Rishabh Pant over Dinesh Karthik in the Men in Blue's clash against South Africa in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2022 on Sunday (October 30). India have gotten off to a flying start in the tournament with two wins in their first two games and will be hoping to maintain their winning streak in the third Super 12 clash against the Proteas.

Karthik has been India's first-choice wicket-keeper batter so far in the tournament but hasn't got too many chances to impress as he bats in the lower-middle order as the team's designated finisher. While he hasn't batted enough, he hasn't been flawless while keeping wickets.

Speaking ahead of the crucial clash against South Africa, Kapil India should look at playing Pant as he will provide a left-hand option in the middle order and his wicket-keeping can be like a breath of fresh air for the team making it look complete.

"I want to say that since we have Rishabh Pant, now is the time India need him. It felt as if Dinesh Karthik would get the job done, but factoring in the wicketkeeping as well, I feel that if India have that left-hander option in the team, this team would look complete," Kapil said on ABP News.

Kapil also backed struggling KL Rahul to find his form soon in the ongoing tournament. Rahul has looked completely out of touch in the first two games and has managed only 13 runs so far. The former India captain said Rahul needs to be patient at the top and take his time initially as he has the skills to accelerate when needed.

"He is a very neat cricketer. If you look at his batting, he doesn't appear to be struggling. He gets out and has in fact, played on twice or thrice. I want him to score runs because it is really important for him to score. Some players are told not to play fast. He can take time initially because he can easily accelerate as and when needed. I want him to play patiently, play the first 8-10 overs, and then when he gets an idea what total is best on the pitch, then go for it," said Kapil.

Team would look complete: Kapil Dev urges India to play Rishabh Pant over Dinesh Karthik vs South Africa

At 37, Dinesh Karthik could well be playing his last ICC tournament, having been a part of global event squad for the first time back in 2007. At 25, Rishabh Pant has years of top-flight cricket left in him. He batted from start to finish during the nets but a place in the playing eleven still looks like a distant reality.

Both are at different stages of their lives -- Karthik doing some special 'blind drills' so that people don't criticise his keeping in what could be his last big tournament.

While gathering a powerful throw, he seemed to be in pain and took off his main gloves and looked at his 'inners'.
In case of Pant, there was passion and anger of a youth in his batting session as Rahul Dravid spent the maximum time looking at his batting.

At times he treated Shardul Thakur and Mohammed Siraj with utter disdain. At other times, he played and missed but didn't leave the nets.

On one of the coldest days in Perth, the focus of India's net session was Karthik's unique keeping drills under supervision of fielding coach T Dilip.

Blind Drill is a specific keeping exercise done to increase alertness as keepers get blindsided by batters when the ball comes to them at last the moment.

Dilip kept a couple of red and white markers at least four feet apart and put a white towel on them. As Karthik crouched behind the imaginary stumps, Dilip from the other kept an inclined plane used for giving sharp catches and hit the balls between the two road markers and in a manner that it gets deflected by the towel.

The towel is like a batter, who is covering the ball, and even if he misses it, the keeper would get a sight of the delivery at the last moment. This training is specially done to get the reflexes in order if someone like an Axar Patel, who bowls his deliveries at a quicker pace beats the bat.

Karthik had missed an easy stumping chance against the Netherlands as could watch the ball only when it had come near him at the last moment. The drill has two-fold benefits - it helps in making the reflexes quick and improves footwork.

The second set of the drill was with the big kit bag after removing the marker. Now Dilip was hurling the ball down the leg-side and a crouched Karthik needed deft footwork even if he is wrong-footed and gather the wide leg-side balls when bowlers lose their line.

Later, Karthik practiced catches off awkward edges. Here, the team used a special rubber bat with rough and rugged edges. The moment the ball hits those rugged cuts, it could fly in any direction - inside edge, outside edge, lob on-front, or just nosedive.

It was mental conditioning coach Paddy Upton, who batted left-handed during the drills. In fact coach Rahul Dravid had instructed net bowlers (spinners) to bowl fast and quick into the stumps when Karthik was keeping.

"We got an instruction from Indian coaches to flight it less and bowl fast and keep it within stumps without much turn for Karthik to keep. We are not used to bowling this quick in Grade cricket but it was good fun," said one of the net bowlers Khilesh.

As Karthik did his drills, Pant batted and batted at the other nets. One could gauge he is hurting. You are not a champion player if you are not hurt by snub.

After the two-hour session, when everyone thought he was packing his kits, he took out his keeping gear and asked Nuwan Senaviratne to give him throwdowns for another 15 minutes.

It seemed he didn't want to leave the Optus Stadium even if the temperature was around 10-12 degrees.
He obliged the selfie hunters as well as the journalists. Shook hands with familiar faces and exchanged pleasantries. But it was clear, he was hurt at being left out of playing XI.

"Rishabh bhai open kaarlo, India ki zindaagi badal jayegi," a fan shouted from the other side of the fence. Rishabh looked back and started walking.

Even he wants to open but is the team management listening.

The chairman of selectors Chetan Sharma was present during the optional training session but quietly watched proceedings from a distance. Unlike some of the series after he had become the coach, Sharma wasn't seen voluntarily entering the nets or talking to the bowlers.

Rather he chose a safe distance behind the fast bowler's bowling mark and watched coaches Rahul Dravid, Paras Mhambrey and Vikram Rathour monitor the session. Once the practice was over, he was seen sharing a laugh with Karthik as they walked back.

T20 WC: Dinesh Karthik does 'blind' drills, Rishabh Pant bats like man possessed ahead of South Africa clash

India left for Australia early this month for the upcoming T20 World Cup. Rohit Sharma & Co. have had a stellar run in the shortest format in this year and, hence, are one of the title contenders for the marquee edition Down Under. In the last edition, held in 2021 in the UAE, India faltered under pressure and failed to get past the Super 12 round after back-to-back losses in their opening two games, versus Pakistan and New Zealand, respectively.

Thus, India will be keen to turn the tides this time around. They have a strong squad -- compromising Rohit, vice-captain KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, in-form Suryakumar Yadav, Bhuvnneshwar Kumar, Hardik Pandya, etc. -- and will be desperate to click from the word go. So far, India have won the T20 WC title only once, during the 2007 edition under MS Dhoni, and since then, they managed to reach the top four only twice (with them ending as runners-up in 2014). Will India return with the elusive title? Only time will tell...

Team India at T20 World Cup 2022: Squad, schedule, timings - Everything you need to know

The D-day has finally arrived. India and Pakistan are set to meet in the Super 12 round of the Men's T20 World Cup 2022 edition, at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), Melbourne on Sunday afternoon (October 23). This will be the second clash of the day, with Ireland-Sri Lanka face-off at Hobart being the first encounter.

India and Pakistan do not meet in bilaterals ever since the strained political relations between both sides. Hence, both the sides now only square off during multi-nation or ICC events. Thus, the clash becomes even more special for cricket lovers from both countries. This year, India and Pakistan have already met twice, during the 2022 Asia Cup. Back then, both teams won and lost a game each.

During their last T20 WC face-off, India lost their first-ever World Cup game to their arch-rivals Pakistan. Babar Azam-led Men in Green rode on Shaheen Afridi's 3/31 and unbeaten half-centuries from Babar-Md Rizwan to thrash India by ten wickets. Since then, India have revamped their T20I playing style and have enjoyed considerable success in the format in 2022.

Thus, it promises to be an enthralling encounter between both sides at the MCG. The weather condition is keenly being followed by cricket lovers across the globe ahead of the marquee face-off. While one cannot predict anything related to the weather, here's our prediction of India's XI for the Pakistan clash:

India vs Pakistan, T20 WC 2022: Predicting Rohit Sharma & Co.'s likely playing XI for high-voltage clash

Former India opener Gautam Gambhir has warned captain Rohit Sharma and the Indian team management against playing Dinesh Karthik over Rishabh Pant as the first-choice wicket-keeper in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2022. The 2007 T20 World Cup winner believes the decision to play Karthik, who has been effective only in slog overs can backfire for India at the World Cup.

While Indian skipper Rohit Sharma has confirmed he has already decided the playing XI for the team's opening clash against arch-rivals Pakistan in the T20 World Cup 2022, the debate surrounding the team combination has not died down. One of the major selection headaches for India is the wicket-keeper's slot with Karthik and Pant competing against each other.

While Pant holds a significant advantage in being a left-hander in the absence of Ravindra Jadeja, the Indian team management has recently backed Karthik over the young gun considering his finishing exploits. The 37-year-old has been phenomenal down the order and has played numerous match-winning cameos for the Indian team as a finisher.

However, Gambhir believes India should not pick a batter specifically to play only ten balls and that the strategy can prove to be dangerous when India lose early wickets. The former India opener said he would pick Pant to bat at number five in his playing XI with Hardik Pandya and Axar Patel batting at no.6 and no.7 respectively.

"In my playing XI, Rishabh Pant should play at No.5, Hardik Pandya at No.6, and Axar Patel at No.7. But what we have seen in the practice matches is that Dinesh Karthik will play. But a player is not picked to play just 10 balls. You should pick a player so that he can bat at No.5 or 6. But Dinesh Karthik has not shown that intention," Gambhir told Zee News.

"He and the team management have shown the intention that he will bat only in the last 2-3 overs and that can be dangerous because in Australia, if you lose early wickets, you might have to send in Axar Patel early because you also wouldn't want to expose Hardik early. That is why I picked Pant in my playing XI. But again, that won't happen," he added.

While India's top four is already sorted with captain Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav walking into the XI, Gambhir feels India should play with three specialist fast bowlers in Australia. He picked Mohammed Shami as his first-choice pacer and backed Harshal Patel as the death overs specialist.

The former India opener wants the team management to select one between Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Arshdeep Singh while using Hardik Pandya as the fourth pacer.

"You will have to play with three pacers. Mohammed Shami should be picked first, before Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Arshdeep Singh, and Harshal Patel. Hardik Pandya will be the fourth seamer and the sixth bowling option. The quality Shami has, we know he is very effective with the new ball, but with the old ball, which we all saw in the match against Australia. So, Shami first. One of Bhuvneshwar or Arshdeep should be picked. Harshal should be picked because he does have some experience bowling in the death," said Gambhir.

India will lock horns with Pakistan in their opening game in the T20 World Cup 2022 on Sunday (October 23). India have lost twice in their last three meetings against the Men in Green and will be looking to set the record straight this time around.

Also Read: Scrap Asia Cup, don't bring politics into cricket: Javed Miandad slams BCCI after Jay Shah's comments "In my playing XI, Rishabh Pant should play at No.5, Hardik Pandya at No.6, and Axar Patel at No.7. Also Read: Disappointed to have not won an ICC trophy in 9 years, T20 WC gives us a chance to change it: Rohit Sharma The former India opener wants the team management to select one between Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Arshdeep Singh while using Hardik Pandya as the fourth pacer.

A player is not picked to play 10 balls: Gambhir explains why India should play Pant over Karthik in T20 WC

Ishan Kishan's terrific knock in the second ODI against South Africa in Ranchi left South Africa legend Dale Styen mighty impressed. After witnessing Kishan's heroics with the willow, Styen issues a warning to Rishabh Pant and India's other middle-order batters stating that they should be wary of the young left-hander.

Kishan has been around the Indian setup for a while now and his amazing hitting prowess is a secret to none. The talented southpaw can single-handedly take down bowling attacks on his day and packs a punch with his sensational strokes. He was in sublime touch during the second ODI against South Africa and missed out on a well-deserved hundred by a whisker.

Kishan slammed a brilliant knock of 93 runs off 84 balls laced with seven sixes and four fours in the second ODI against the Proteas as India defeated the visitors by seven wickets to level the three-match series 1-1. En route to his 93-run-knock, Kishan slammed a boundary and two consecutive sixes off a single over from fast bowler Anrich Nortje, leaving Steyn in awe of his stroke-making abilities.

They're pure timing and muscle," Steyn said on Star Sports talking about Kishan's knock.

"And just the ability to recognise when to take on the bowler... he is a great player and guys in that premium Indian team, Rishabh Pant, all the other guys in similar position, they will have eyes on the back of their heads knowing that Ishan Kishan is coming for their spot," Steyn said on Star Sports after the third ODI," he added.

Kishan was a regular in India's T20I team last year but fell down the pecking order due to a lack of chances and intense competition for spots. While Pant is currently India's first-choice keeper-batter in the shortest format and is with the rest of the squad in Australia ahead of the upcoming T20 World Cup 2022, Kishan was part of the ODI squad for the South Africa series.

Ishan Kishan is coming for their spot: Dale Steyn issues warning to Rishabh Pant and others

India will be looking to continue their winning momentum and put their bowling attack to the test when they lock horns with South Africa in the third and final T20I in Indore on Tuesday. The Men in Blue have already clinched the series with back-to-back wins in the first two games but the dead rubber remains a crucial one for them as they look to finalise their pace attack for T20 World Cup 2022.

With Jasprit Bumrah ruled out and Mohammed Shami not part of the ongoing series, Mohammed Siraj might finally get a chance to showcase his skills in the third T20I against the Proteas. He was roped in as Bumrah's replacement in the series but is yet to get a game.

If Shami replaces Bumrah in the T20 World Cup squad, Siraj might get a spot in the reserves considering he impresses with his bowling against the visitors. India's death bowling woes were there for everyone to see as the likes of Arshdeep Singh and Harshal Patel were taken to the cleaners in the high-scoring 2nd T20I.

Rishabh Pant to open, Shreyas Iyer to return? India's predicted playing XI for 3rd T20I against South Africa

India will take on Soth Africa in the series-opener of the three-match T20I series at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala on Wednesday (September 28). After a 2-1 win against Australia in their recently-concluded T20I assignment at home, the Men in Blue will be looking to continue their winning run against the Proteas.

The T20I series against South Africa will be India's final assignment in the shortest format ahead of the start of the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia next month. The hosts will be looking to make the best use of the series and play their full-strength XI in order to fine-tune their preparations ahead of the World Cup.

However, India face some selection headaches against the Proteas as they will be missing the services of all-rounders Deepak Hooda and Hardik Pandya along with senior fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar. While Bhuvneshwar and Hardik have been rested from the series, Hooda misses out due to a back injury.

India have roped in Shreyas Iyer and Shahbaz Ahmed in the absence of Hardik and Hooda while young pacer Arshdeep Singh will return to take Bhuvneshwar's spot in the squad. Mohammed Shami will continue to remain sidelined as he is yet to recover from COVID-19.

It will be crucial for India to get their selection right against a strong South African side in order to ensure they can continue their winning momentum ahead of the World Cup. In the absence o Hardik, Axar Patel is likely to be the sole all-rounder in the side with Rishabh Pant returning to strengthen the middle-order.

India will miss Hardik's quality in the bowling attack but having Arsdheep back is a huge boost as the left-arm seamer has been impressive in the death overs. Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel will continue to spearhead the pace attack while Yuzvendra Chahal can be the solitary spinner in the team.

India will lack a sixth bowling option in the absence of Hardik but they can make up for it with the bat as they will have incredible depth in the batting line-up with Dinesh Karthik and Axar Patel in the lower-middle order. Deepak Chahar and Shahbaz Ahmed also remain strong contenders for a spot in the playing XI but are unlikely to make the cut in the series opener.

Rishabh Pant, Arshdeep Singh to return? India's predicted playing XI for 1st T20I vs South Africa

Team India is struggling to finalise their team combination with the T20 World Cup not even a month away. India faltered in the Super Four round in the Asia Cup and also lost the three-match T20I series opener versus Australia, in Mohali on Tuesday (September 20), with their death bowling continuing to be their biggest concern ahead of the T20 WC in Australia, from October-November.

India's bowlers were hammered all around the park in the T20I series opener versus Australia, with all the bowlers -- apart from Axar Patel -- conceding in excess of 11 runs per over. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, whose death bowling was abysmal versus Pakistan and Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup, conceded 31 runs in his last 12 deliveries whereas Harshal Patel went for 22 runs in the penultimate over as Australia chased down 208-run target with four wickets in hand, in 19.2 overs.

Ahead of the second and penultimate T20I between India and Australia, to be held in Nagpur on Friday (September 23), former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra admitted that hopes of India winning the forthcoming World Cup is 'a bit less'. "Yuzi Chahal continues to bowl faster. How will you get wickets if you don't bowl slower at all? The reality is that India have a weak bowling line-up and the hopes of winning the World Cup are a bit less. You need to win the remaining games or else you will lose the series against a side that is without its four main players," Chopra opined on his Youtube channel.

Chopra further asserted that even Jasprit Bumrah's return might not solve India's bowling woes unless others step up. Bumrah is expected to play the second T20I after he wasn't rushed into the playing XI for the Mohali encounter having recently recovered from a back injury, which kept him out of the Asia Cup. "One bowler can't come and completely change everything. This is the sad reality. What happened to MI this year when they had just Bumrah? They didn't win much, right? So, except for a game where you take 5–6 wickets, you won't make a lot of difference with just one bowler," he added.

After the defeat in Mohali, captain Rohit had said in the post-match presentation, "I don't think we bowled well. 200 is a good score to defend, and we didn't take our chances in the field. It was a great effort from our batters, but bowlers were not quite there. There are things we need to look at, but it was a great game for us to understand what went wrong."

Hopes of winning T20 World Cup are a bit less, admits Aakash Chopra amid India's bowling woes

Rohit Sharma-led India will face Australia in the second and penultimate T20I on Friday evening (September 23). After losing the series opener by four wickets in Mohali, the home side will be under pressure when they take on the field with the series on the line. In the last India-Australia T20I series held in India, the Aaron Finch-led Men in Yellow had inflicted a 2-0 whitewash over the then Virat Kohli & Co. and, hence, India will like to keep the series alive and settle scores in the third T20I on Sunday (September 23).

India's death-bowling woes need to be addressed at the earliest, with the T20 World Cup less than a month away. Hence, India will hope the likes of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Harshal Patel, who leaked plenty in the end overs at Mohali, will regain some form whereas all eyes will be on Jasprit Bumrah's return. The premier pacer wasn't rushed into the playing XI during the series opener, having recently recovered from a back injury, but is expected to turn up on the field on Friday evening with the series on the line.

The Indian team is facing criticism from all corners for their sloppy fielding in the first T20I against Australia in Mohali on Tuesday. India looked far from clinical on the pitch and dropped as many as three crucial catches during Australia's run-chase. The Men in Blue lost the series-opener by four wickets after failing to defend a good total of 208 runs.

India dropped the catches of both Cameron Green and Matthew Wade, who went on to play brilliant knocks to take their team home in the 209-run chase. Former Pakistan captain Salman Butt took a swipe at the Indian players' fitness after their shoddy fielding in the game and called some of the Indian players 'overweight'.

Butt compared the Indian players to their Australian, English and South African counterparts while arguing why they are not the fittest despite being the highest-paid cricketers in the world.

"Indian players are the highest-paid cricketers in the world. They play the maximum number of matches. You tell me why are they not the fittest. If we compare their body structure, teams like South Africa, Australia and England are much better. I would even say some Asian teams are ahead of India. Some Indian players are overweight. I think they need to work on that because they are brilliant cricketers," Butt said in a video on his YouTube channel.

While he admitted the likes of Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja have set great fitness standards in the Indian team, Butt argued Rohit Sharma and Rishabh Pant don't look on top of their fitness. He also called out KL Rahul for being lethargic on the field against Australia on Tuesday.

"I don't know if others will talk about this or not, but in my view, Team India's fitness is not ideal. Some experienced players are not at that level where they should be in terms of fielding. Virat Kohli has set an example for others in fitness. Ravindra Jadeja, Hardik Pandya are so fit," said Butt.

They have outstanding fitness, but there are players like Rohit Sharma, even KL Rahul looked lethargic today, you know, Rishabh Pant. If they become fit, they will become more dangerous cricketers," he added.

Highest-paid but some are overweight: Former Pakistan captain aims dig at Indian players on fitness

India played Australia in the three-match T20I series opener on Tuesday evening (September 20) at the PCA IS Bindra Stadium, Mohali. The Rohit Sharma-led Men in Blue posted a mammoth 208 for 6 in 20 overs, registering their highest score versus the Aussies in the format, before failing to defend the tall score.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Harshal Patel leaked plenty of runs -- with India needing 40 to defend off the last 18 balls -- as the duo were taken to the cleaners and led to Australia's four-wicket win, riding on Cameron Green's 61 and Matthew Wade's 45 not out. During the clash, Rishabh Pant's absence made heads turn as the Rohit Sharma-Rahul Dravid-led team management went ahead with veteran Dinesh Karthik as the wicketkeeper-batter, dropping Pant.

It is to be noted that Pant wasn't preferred in the playing XI in India's Asia Cup opener, versus Pakistan. However, he replaced DK from the line-up in the following games before the two featured in the playing XI in India's last clash, versus Afghanistan in the Super Four round.

After Pant's omission, former Aussie opener-turned-commentator Matthew Hayden backed the star player and called for his inclusion, at all times, across formats. "Rishabh Pant would be picked in every side if I was the selector. He is just the future. He needs to be backed and needs time. Even if it's through runs or form, he should be there in my opinion. He is a superior player in pretty much every way and aspect," Hayden said on air during the 1st T20I in Mohali.

Further, Hayden also spoke highly about Josh Inglis -- who scored a vital 10-ball 17 in the run-chase -- and expects young stars to step up in the India series, in the absence of Marcus Stoinis, Mitchell Starc, Mitchell Marsh and David Warner. "They are a depleted side but the reality of it is that they have got to dig deep. We have got to look towards what is next in the line-up. Young Inglis is such an exciting and young player. He is almost like a mirror-image of David Warner. He is a right-handed version. He cuts, he pulls, he lays back and when it comes his way, he hits it through the on-side. He is also a very good powerful player," Hayden added.

Rishabh Pant is a superior player, says ex-Aussie opener after India prefer Dinesh Karthik in Mohali T20I

Former India cricketer Wasim Jaffer has made a bold suggestion urging the Indian team management to leave Rishabh Pant out of the playing XI in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2022. Jaffer believes Pant has not managed to impress in T20Is for India and doesn't fit in the middle order.

Pant and Dinesh Karthik are the two wicket-keepers in India's 15-man squad for the T20 World Cup in Australia next month. While it remains to be seen who will be the first choice behind the stumps, Jaffer believes Karthik should play ahead of Pant as the left-hander has not been up to the mark in the shortest format of the game.

India will lock horns with Australia in a three-match T20I series starting from Tuesday where they will have to make the tough choice of picking one between Pant and Karthik. Jaffer wants the Indian team management to go with Karthik as the keeper and give all-rounder Axar Patel a chance in the middle-order in the absence of Ravindra Jadeja.

"I think Axar Patel has done really well in recent times, so I don't know why India has not trusted him, because he has won matches with his batting," Jaffer said on ESPNCricinfo.

Explaining why Pant should not be India's playing XI in the World Cup, Jaffer said the left-hander might have played some game-changing knocks in Test cricket but is still to prove his worth in the shortest format for the Indian team. Jaffer believes Pant can be utilised as an opener but he doesn't suit well in the middle order.

"India need to figure out whether Rishabh Pant plays or not. The Indian think tank has been thinking a lot about putting Rishabh Pant in. He has been brilliant and we have talked about it many times. In Test cricket and in the ODIs, he has played series-winning, game-changing knocks, but that has not happened in T20 internationals or even in T20s," Jaffer said.

"So India need to figure out if they want to stick with Rishabh Pant in the top six or if they want to play Dinesh Karthik, who has done really well since the Indian Premier League. For me personally, Rishabh Pant does not fit in number 4 or 5. His best place is to open the batting, which I don't think will happen. I feel leaving out Rishabh Pant in the World Cup will be the best thing," he added.

Pant has so far played 58 T20Is for the Indian team and has managed to score 934 runs at an average of 23.94 and a strike rate of just over 126. He is yet to fire consistently with the willow in the shortest format and is yet to play the kind of innings he is known for.

No Rishabh Pant in T20 World Cup? Wasim Jaffer says leaving out wicket-keeper will be best thing for India

Jasprit Bumrah wasn't part of India's dismal run in the Asia Cup 2022 edition, held in the UAE. While the pacer has returned to the Indian team and is part of the main squad for the T20 World Cup 2022 edition, to be held in Australia, the 28-year-old will look to be at his best with the ball after returning to action post his back injury.

Bumrah is part of India's T20I squads for the Australia and South Africa home series. However, the premier pacer wasn't named in Rohit & Co.'s playing XI for the T20I series versus Aaron Finch-led Aussies, in Mohali, on Tuesday evening (September 20). At the coin toss, Finch opted to bowl first and Rohit explained the reason behind Bumrah's absence.

"Bumrah is not playing, he will take a game's break and probably come back in the second and the third game," said Rohit at the toss ceremony. Meanwhile, Dinesh Karthik pipped Rishabh Pant to be named India's wicketkeeper-batter in the XI. It is to be noted that Pant was preferred over DK in India's all-important Asia Cup Super Four encounters versus Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Both, however, played the inconsequential tie against Afghanistan.

Rohit also explained the significance of the home series -- versus the Aussies and SA -- for Team India heading into the T20 WC. "Looking at what happened in the Asia Cup, we had a chance to reflect on where we went wrong. This gives us an opportunity to correct ourselves," revealed Rohit.

Ind vs Aus, 1st T20I: EXPLAINED! Why Jasprit Bumrah didn't make the cut in India's playing XI

India's 15-man squad for the T20 World Cup was announced by the BCCI last week. It featured majority of the players who were part of Rohit Sharma & Co.'s dismal Asia Cup campaign, with pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel also being included after regaining fitness.

In the reserves, the likes of Md Shami, Ravi Bishnoi, Shreyas Iyer and Deepak Chahar were named. The biggest exclusion was Sanju Samson, who wasn't even mentioned in the standby list. Former Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria feels India could've gone for Samson instead of Pant, who he believes 'shouldn't be part of the Indian T20 team at the moment'.

"India must keep their friendships aside and not pick players on that basis. Rishabh Pant doesn't look like a good T20 player. He is more suited to 50-over cricket and Test matches," Kaneria said in a video on his YouTube channel.

"Sanju Samson could be a better option over Rishabh Pant. Pant's recent performances also haven't been that great and Dinesh Karthik is also already there in the team," he opined.

Kaneria further asserted, "Samson deserved to be a part of the team. He was impressive when India toured Australia in 2020. His hand-eye coordination is very good. Sanju Samson could be a better option over Rishabh Pant: Ex-Pak spinner analyses India's T20 WC squad

Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel will make their comeback for the Indian team as they lock horns with Australia in a three-match T20I series starting Tuesday (September 20). The first T20I will be played at the PCA Stadium in Mohali on Tuesday with Rohit Sharma & Co. aiming to get off to a winning start.

Bumrah and Harshal are two of India's leading pacers in T20Is. The duo's return will significantly strengthen India's playing XI after the fast bowlers' disappointing show in the recently-concluded Asia Cup 2022. While the duo will form the pace attack alongside the experienced Bhuvneshwar Kumar, it remains to be seen if R Ashwin manages to pip Yuzvendra Chahal for the spinner's slot.

India also face a significant selection headache with the T20 World Cup 2022 right around the corner. The team management will have to decide between Dinesh Karthik and Rishabh Pant on who will be the first-choice wicket-keeper.

Pant's selection is likely as he is the only left-hander in India's middle-order in the absence of Ravindra Jadeja but Karthik might get a nod ahead of him if left-arm all-rounder Axar Patel makes the cut. Patel is a like-to-like replacement for injured Jadeja and will be the second all-rounder alongside Hardik Pandya.

Opening batter and vice-captain KL Rahul will also be under the spotlight as he has failed to fire ever since making his comeback from injury during India's tour of Zimbabwe last month. Rahul's struggles have also prompted a debate over Virat Kohli being promoted to open the innings in T20Is, however, it's unlikely to happen in the series-opener on Tuesday.

India's top three of Rohit Sharma, Rahul and Kohli will remain intact while Suryakumar Yadav is expected to continue batting at number four. Hardik and Pant will slot into the middle order with a battle between Deepak Hooda and Axar for the other spot.

Rishabh Pant or Dinesh Karthik? India's predicted playing XI for 1st T20I against Australia

BCCI announced India's 15-man squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2022 edition, to be held in Australia from October-November. After a disappointing run in the Asia Cup, Rohit Sharma-led Men in Blue will be desperate to make amends and finalise their team combination in their remaining T20Is -- versus the Aussies and South Africa at home -- before the showpiece event Down Under.

India's squad includes several future leaders such as KL Rahul (current vice-captain), Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant, and Jasprit Bumrah. Former Indian opener-turned-commentator made a bold claim on his Youtube channel and feels that Pant, who doesn't have great numbers in T20Is, can be India's future captain in the format.

Pant has so far amassed 934 runs in 58 matches, at 23.94 and a strike rate of over 126. He often invites criticism for his shot selection and not being consistent with the willow. With Dinesh Karthik's comeback, the youngster is also facing the heat to regularly feature in the T20I line-up due to the veteran's finishing skills. However, Chopra feels a bright future is ahead of Pant.

"I feel the future will be great. He might become the Indian captain in T20 cricket going forward. He will be that maverick people will be scared of. He will play in a bold fashion," an upbeat Chopra said.

"But at this point in time, the truth is that he is still figuring out whether he should do this or that, whether he should hit or play cautiously, whether he will get dropped if he gets out while trying to hit," the former batter further asserted.

"He has done all of that, but this happens when you are young and extremely talented, and the expectation is that the guy will come and hit. So at times, he feels obliged that he has to hit but gets out while doing that. So it is a big problem," Chopra added.

He might become India's T20I captain: Aakash Chopra's big prediction on star player

Rishabh Pant remains India's top-choice wicketkeeper-batter across formats. Ever since his amazing returns in the 2020/21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, Pant's stocks have risen considerably and he is slowly coming to his own in ODIs as well. Nonetheless, his T20I numbers aren't extra ordinary as the swashbuckling left-hander has slammed 934 runs in 58 matches, at an average of 23.94 and a strike rate of over 126.

Pant has played some vital knocks but his overall returns, so far, aren't that impressive. In his defence, he plays in a tricky position, in the middle and lower order, but many are still waiting for the 24-year-old to go big in the shortest format for Team India. He is part of Rohit Sharma-led Indias' 15-member main squad for the forthcoming T20 World Cup 2022 edition, in Australia, and will hope to go all-out with the bat for the one-time winners. Ahead of the marquee tournament, former Pakistan skipper Salman Butt opined on Pant's batting in T20Is.

Decoding Pant as a T20I batter, Butt answered a fan's query during his live session on YouTube and revealed, "His strength is too many shots. His downfall is too many shots. Too many shots, all at once."

"This is what makes him special, and this is the reason for his downfall as well. When he is successful, he looks spectacular. He has a good range, he is brave, and he has so many shots in his arsenal. But sometimes, you have to play calculative cricket," he opined.

"But he has much belief in his ability. He is so confident that he goes for his shot. If he fails, he receives criticism for his shot selection, and if he succeeds, people are in awe. So, I believe he has been given a free hand," Butt further asserted on the left-hander.

Recently, former Indian opener Wasim Jaffer shared an interesting suggestion for Rohit & Co. ahead of the T20 WC. He tweeted saying, "I still think opening the inns is where we could see the best of Pant in T20. Provided Rohit is ok to bat @ 4. MS took a punt on Rohit before CT in 2013, and the rest is history. Time for Rohit to take a punt on Pant. KL, Pant, VK, Rohit, Sky would be my top five. #INDvAUS #T20WC."

After BCCI announced India's 15-man squad for the T20 World Cup, former Indian opener Wasim Jaffer has shared an interesting suggestion for Rohit Sharma & Co. The ex-Indian batter has suggested Rohit to take an MS Dhoni-like gamble in the forthcoming showpiece event, to be held in Australia from October-November.

Jaffer wants Rohit to promote Rishabh Pant up the order and use him as an opener with vice-captain KL Rahul. Given Pant can play the big shots at will, he can utilise the powerplay overs and take the pressure off Rahul, who is generally criticised for his strike rate. Nonetheless, Rohit's demotion at No. 4 can be a big gamble -- despite the fact that he used to bat at that position early in his career -- but Jaffer feels it can be the right way forward.

Wasim Jaffer makes interesting suggestion, wants Rohit Sharma to take MS Dhoni-like gamble in T20 WC

BCCI announced India's 15-man squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2022 edition on Monday evening (September 12). As expected, the main squad comprises all the big guns who featured in the Asia Cup but also saw the return of premier pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel.

In the reserve list, Md Shami, Deepak Chahar, Shreyas Iyer and Ravi Bishnoi were named. Former Indian captain and chief selector Dilip Vengsarkar opened up on India's squad for the showpiece event, in Australia from October-November, and named the star player who can be Men in Blue's finisher. While the squad features some known finishers such as Hardik Pandya, Dinesh Karthik and Rishabh Pant, Vengsarkar feels Suryakumar Yadav can do the tough job at the forthcoming ICC event.

"I can’t really comment on who bats at what number. It is up to the think tank, the coach, the captain and the vice-captain. But I feel Suryakumar Yadav, who is batting at 4, can bat at 5 as well. He can be a great finisher," Vengsarkar was quoted as saying by The Indian Express.

"T20 is not like ODIs and Test cricket, where you need certain batters at certain positions. In this format, anybody can bat anywhere. You don’t have time to settle down. One should go after the bowlers from ball one," he opined.

SKY ended the Asia Cup with 139 runs -- eighth-highest overall and second-most among Indians -- including a breathtaking 26-ball 68 not out versus Hong Kong.
