Rohit Sharma-led India thrashed Nicholas Pooran's West Indies in the first T20I of the five-match series in Trinidad on Friday (July 29). After Shikhar Dhawan & Co. defeated the Windies 3-0 in the ODIs, one expected the hosts to perform much better in the shortest format; i.e. their most preferred format.

Nonetheless, the Rohit-Rahul Dravid-led Indian team continued their winning run in the format and beat hosts by 68 runs in the series opener. Being asked to bat first, Team India rode on Rohit's 44-ball 64 and Dinesh Karthik's match-winning 19-ball 44 as India posted a challenging 190/6 in 20 overs. In reply, West Indies batters failed to put up a show and while many of them got starts, none stayed till the end to give a tough fight.

Arshdeep Singh, R Ashwinn and Ravi Bishnoi were the star performers with the ball, returning with two wickets each. Now, the action moves to the second T20I. Will Windies level the series or will the visitors continue their winning streak on the tour?

WI vs IND: When and where to watch West Indies vs India 2nd T20I - IST time and streaming details

Team India has attained a unique record this year with as many as seven players captaining the Men in Blue, due to different reasons, since early 2022. The likes of Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah and Shikhar Dhawan have led India across formats.

In the ongoing white-ball tour of the West Indies, Dhawan got a chance to lead India once again — after last year's Sri Lanka tour — in the absence of many regulars such as full-time captain Rohit, Rahul, etc. While Rohit has taken charge for the ongoing five T20Is versus Nicholas Pooran-led Men in Maroon, he has now been assigned a new vice-captain in Rahul’s absence (who is Rohit’s deputy across formats).

Though Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja are present in the playing XI for the series opener, in Trinidad, it is Hardik Pandya who has been named the vice-captain for the T20I series. The all-rounder, who led the debutants Gujarat Titans (GT) to victory in IPL 2022, recently captained India during the two-match Ireland T20Is in late June.

Ever since Rohit has been appointed as India’s all-format captain, there have been many changes in leadership due to frequent rest, injury or Covid concerns to Rohit-KL. Thus, in this way, the Indian team management is also getting a chance to groom young leaders in the presence of Hitman.

At the coin toss of the first T20I between India and WI, Rohit-led visitors were asked to bat first at the Brian Lara Stadium, Tarouba, Trinidad. The one-time winners are still without regulars such as Virat and Bumrah as the duo have been rested for the tour.

India will like to maintain their winning run in the format ahead of this year’s T20 World Cup, set to be held in Australia in the latter half.

Not Rishabh nor Jadeja! Rohit Sharma assigned a new vice-captain in KL Rahul's absence for WI T20I

Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif has slammed the Indian team management for not backing Rishabh Pant as an opener in T20Is. Like many, Kaif was left surprised when Suryakumar Yadav walked in to open the batting with captain Rohit Sharma in the 1t T20I of the ongoing five-match series against West Indies at the Brian Lara Stadium in Trinidad on Friday (July 29).

Despite having Ishan Kishan in the squad, India have been experimenting continuously in T20Is as far as the opening slots are considered. While Rohit's position as an opener remains unchallenged, a number of other batters have been tried in the second opening slot, including Pant.

Pant had opened for India in the T20I series against England earlier this month and had impressed with his swashbuckling batting display. Kaif believes India should have persisted with the left-hand wicket-keeper batter at the top and played Suryakumar, who is a middle-order batter in his actual position.

Kaif said he couldn't quite understand India's strategy behind opening the batting with Suryakumar while criticising the team management for not giving Pant enough opportunities on top of the order. He also pointed out how Suryakumar will be the best fit for India at 4 and it makes no sense to open the batting with him.

"Whatever that was, I did not understand it at all. If you were trying Rishabh Pant as the opener for 2-3 matches, then you should have gone with him today as well. Give him at least five chances. And this strategy of captain Rohit Sharma and coach Rahul Dravid, they back the players at least 5-6 matches,” Kaif said on FanCode.

“But this did not happen with Pant. And Suryakumar has the role of controlling the innings in the middle and adding those finishing touches. In fact, his role will remain as the No. 4 batter when Kohli and Rahul return. But Pant should have been tried. Clearly, I did not understand what happened. Ishan Kishan is also waiting," he added.

Talking about the first T20I, India got off to a winning start in the five-match series with a comprehensive victory by 68 runs in the series-opener at the Brian Lara Stadium. Captain Rohit led from the front with the bat with a brilliant knock of 64 runs while finisher Dinesh Karthik impressed again with an unbeaten 41 off just 19 balls to help India post a strong 190 runs on the board in 20 overs.

In reply, West Indies were skittled out cheaply off just 122 runs after their batting line-up suffered a terrible collapse. Spinners R Ashwin and Ravi Bishnoi ran riot against the hosts' batting line-up picking up two wickets apiece while Arshdeep Singh also managed to pick two wickets while conceding only 24 runs off his 4 overs.

The T20 World Cup is nearing its commencement. The eighth edition of the marquee tournament will be held in Australia for the first time, from October-Novamber and will be played in the same format as the 2021 edition.

Aaron Finch-led Australia will not only be the hosts but also start as the defending champions after the Men in Yellow won their maiden T20 WC trophy last year, beating New Zealand in a one-sided Trans-Tasman battle in Dubai.

Ahead of the showpiece event Down Under, former Aussie captain and two-time ODI World Cup-winning skipper Ricky Ponting made a bold claim. He feels Rohit Sharma-led India will enter the tournament final but lose to Australia in the summit clash. "I think India and Australia will be the two playing in the final and I will just have to say that Australia will beat them in the final. The reigning champions have got home conditions and that was one thing that made Australia's win in the last World Cup, not remarkable, but that little bit sweeter for them," Ponting said on ICC Review.

Ponting, the Delhi Capitals (DC) head coach, is quite optimistic of his team's chances after they did very well in the last edition, which was held in challenging conditions -- in the UAE -- for the Aussies. "The fact that a lot of people, me included, thought when they went to UAE, the conditions that they were going to have to face on the back of the IPL, I thought the conditions might have been the thing that might not have allowed them to win it. But they found a way," Ponting added.

The Indian Armed Forces defeated the Pakistani army and ousted them from crucial occupied positions in the mountains of Kargil district in Ladakh during the war in 1999. It was on July 26, 1999, that India's victory was observed in the Kargil War. The day is celebrated each year to pay tribute to the soldiers who got martyred for their motherland during the war. The Indian Prime Minister and the President also pay homage to those who sacrificed their lives in the war in the country's capital New Delhi. Dinesh Karthik's splendid run in IPL 2022 revived his career as the veteran cricketer made a comeback into the national side during the India-South Africa home T20Is, in early June. Since then, Karthik has played some vital knocks versus the Proteas and during the series opener of the England T20Is, in Southampton.

Rishabh Pant, on the other hand, had a decent IPL 15 but failed miserably in the following SA T20Is. To date, he hasn't made big contributions in the shortest format, however, his heroics in India's recently-concluded England ODIs keeps him in the reckoning to be in the Men in Blue squad for the 2022 T20 World Cup (T20 WC), to be held in Australia later this year.

When Ricky Ponting -- coach of Pant-led Delhi Capitals (DC) -- was asked to name India's wicketkeeper for the eighth edition of T20 WC, he gave an interesting reply.

"We have seen what Rishabh is capable of in 50-over cricket and I know absolutely what he is capable of in the T20 game. Dinesh Karthik has had his best IPL ever just very recently ... and I would be trying to find every possible way to have both of those guys in my team. Rishabh to bat, in that three-four-five range, and have Dinesh and maybe Hardik Pandya... if you have those guys finishing for you, well that batting line-up looks very, very dangerous," Ponting shared his views on The ICC Review Show.

For the unversed, the keeper's slot is a four-way race with Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson also in the reckoning. Thus, the Rohit Sharma-Rahul Dravid-led team management have a lot to think about while finalising their line-up for the forthcoming marquee event Down Under.

Pant can be slotted in the middle order whereas Ishan can be in the top three and DK is likely to be the finisher, along with Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja. Nonetheless, it will certainly not be a cakewalk for the team management in choosing the final T20 WC squad due to problems of plenty.

Pant or Karthik: Ricky Ponting names his choice for India's wicketkeeper's slot for 2022 T20 WC

Team India is set to play West Indies in three ODIs and five T20Is, in the Caribbean island, with the tour opener to take place on Friday (July 22). In Rohit Sharma's absence, Shikhar Dhawan will take charge of the ODI side whereas Hitman will reclaim his position during the five T20Is.

In the year 2022, India have had several captains such as Rohit, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya, and Jasprit Bumrah whereas Dhawan will also join the list, having already captained a second-stringed side during the Sri Lanka tour last year. Ahead of the WI series, former New Zealand all-rounder Scott Styris feels Shreyas Iyer is also a future captaincy candidate provided he cashes in on his opportunities and gets rid of his short-ball struggles.

Styris agreed that the forthcoming WI tour can be a do-or-die condition for Iyer, who hasn't done anything extraordinary since his return in India colours after IPL 2022. The New Zealander also termed the star batter as a captaincy choice and told Sports 18, "One hundred percent, what I really like about Shreyas Iyer is the leadership quality that he possesses. I think he is a real possibility to be a captain as well for India. For that reason, I would like to see him in and even given more and more opportunities around this squad."

"What I don't like is that there is no secret about Shreyas Iyer now. He has real problems with the short ball. I think you will see a lot of teams attack him with their quick bowlers, attack him at the body with the bouncers, under the armpit, if you like, because I am not sure he has found a way," the former cricketer added.

Not Pandya, Pant or Rahul! Former NZ all-rounder backs India's star player as future captaincy candidate

Rishabh Pant was one of the stars for Team India in their recently-concluded England tour. Pant started the tour by slamming a hundred in the one-off Test in Edgbaston. While he couldn't do much in the following T20Is and second and penultimate ODI, after not getting a chance to bat in the series opener, the swasbuckling left-hander scored his maiden 50-over ton to guide Rohit Sharma & Co. to a memorable 2-1 series win in the third and final ODI on July 17 (Sunday).

Pant came out to bat with India in deep trouble, in pursuit of 260 in the series decider in Manchester, and stitched a memorable 133-run stand with all-rounder Hardik Pandya (55-ball 71). While Hardik departed for a well-compiled knock, Pant ensured India's 2-1 series victory by remaining unbeaten on 125, off 113 balls. He also did a fine job behind the stumps throughout the tour to raise his stocks further at the highest level.

From Shikhar Dhawan to Jasprit Bumrah: 7 captains Rahul Dravid has worked with as India's head coach

Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya are being praised by one and all ever since India won the third and final ODI versus England, in Manchester, to claim the series 2-1. The duo got together with Men in Blue tottering at 72/4 in pursuit of 260.

India lost their famed top 3 -- captain Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli -- for cheap (at 38 for 3) before Suryakumar Yadav also followed suit, leaving India at 72 for 4. Thus, the duo steadied the ship, played sensibly, ran well between wickets and took on the bowlers one by one to take India to a stunning five-wicket win in the series decider. While Pant remained unbeaten on 125, Hardik fell for a 55-ball 71 after claiming 4/24 with the ball.

Speaking on Sports Tak, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Sunil Gavaskar heaped praise on Pant-Hardik and was even optimistic of them replicating the success of legendary Indian batting pair of MS Dhoni-Yuvraj Singh. "It can definitely happen. The kind of sixes Yuvraj and Dhoni used to hit, the way they steadied the innings, the way they ran between the wicket, Hardik Pandya and Rishabh Pant can be that pair for India. And just like Dhoni and Yuvraj used to hit sixes, I hope Pandya and Pant can win the hearts of cricket fans."

Former Pakistan pacer Shoaib Akhtar said only Rishabh Pant can stop himself as he heaped praise on the Indian wicket-keeper batter after his stunning century in the recently-concluded third and final ODI between India and England. Pant played a stellar knock of unbeaten 125 to help India beat England by 5 wickets and clinch the three-match series 2-1.

The legendary Pakistan pacer was left in awe of Pant's swashbuckling stroke play and courageous batting display during India's run-chase in the third ODI. Pant came out to bat at number 4 and soon after his arrival, India were left reeling on 72/4 during the 260-run chase.

Pant combined with Hardik Pandya to put on a 133 run-stand for the fifth wicket as the duo took the game away from England. Pant's unbeaten 125 was laced with 16 fours and 2 sixes as he was awarded the Man of the Match for one of the best innings played by a visiting batter on English soil.

"He is not Rishabh Pant, he is Rishabh 'Phainta'. He is an incredibly courageous player. He cuts, he pulls, he also plays the reverse-sweep and isn't afraid of anything. He won games in Australia and even here, this series should be named after him," Akhtar said in a video on his YouTube channel.

The legendary Pakistan pacer, however, advised Pant to continue working on his fitness as he feels the Indian wicket-keeper still needs to shed some weight. The Rawalpindi Express believes only Pant can stop himself now from achieving greatness for India in international cricket.

"My advice to him would be to improve his physique because he has the talent to put a number of teams into trouble. I was also impressed with the way he was so calculative in the chase. Once he is done pacing his innings, he becomes ruthless and knows how to accelerate. He can only stop himself now from here, I don't think anyone else can," said Akhtar as he lauded the Indian star.

'Only he can stop himself now': Shoaib Akhtar heaps praise on Rishabh Pant after his stunning ton vs England

Team India ended their tour of England by winning both the white-ball series. Rohit Sharma-led India won the three T20Is, 2-1, and also clinched the following three ODIs by the same margin. Thus, India are being termed as one of the favourites for the upcoming T20 World Cup, in Australia, as the team is ticking a lot of boxes in the shorter formats at present.

Nonetheless, when former England captain Nasser Hussain was asked how prepared India are for the upcoming T20 World Cup, Down Under, during an interaction on Sony Sports, he pointed out a glaring issue of the Indian batters against left-arm seamers. In 2016 Asia Cup, 2017 Champions Trophy final, 2019 ODI World Cup semi-final and 2021 T20 World Cup, India's top order has struggled against left-arm seamers. Mohammed Amir, Shaheen Afridi, Trent Boult, etc. have troubled the Indian batters. Even in the India-England white-ball leg, Reece Topley caused a lot of trouble for the Men in Blue batters, claiming 3/28 in the final T20I and nine wickets in the last two ODIs. Thus, Hussain pointed out that India need to be wary of such bowlers and play ICC events like they play a bilateral series.

"India are a very strong team, but they need to learn from what happened in the past. In the last T20 World Cup in the UAE, they were a bit timid with the bat, so they need to stop being that. When you have Pandya and Pant in the middle order and then Jadeja that rope to follow, you don’t need to be timid at the top.

“They need to play to left arm [pace bowling] a little bit better. History tells you that Shaheen Shah Afridi blew them away one evening in Dubai, Mohammad Amir blew them away one afternoon at the Oval in a final, and Reece Topley has blown them away here [in two matches at Lord's and Old Trafford]," he added.

'They need to...' - Former England captain Nasser Hussain mentions Team India's glaring issue

Rishabh Pant has once again stunned world cricket. While Pant has been a huge hit for India in Test cricket, he has not lived upto expectations in the white-ball formats. However, when Rohit Sharma-led India faced England in the three-match ODI series decider, in Manchester on Sunday (July 17), the swashbuckling left-hander came to his best and delivered when the chips were down for the Men in Blue.

After dismissing Jos Buttler-led England for 259 in 45.5 overs, courtesy of Hardik Pandya's 4/24, India were in a spot of bother and reduced to 72/4 when Pant and Hardik joined forces. While Hardik played the aggressor's knock, with a 55-ball 71, the left-hander stayed till the end to smash his maiden ODI ton -- 125 not out off 113 balls -- and took India to a 2-1 series win over the 50-over world champions. Seeing Pant rise to the occasion in a high-pressure situation, former Indian batter and former Bengal coach Arun Lal has lavished huge praise on Pant. In addition, he feels he is the future captain after Rohit.

“Yes, absolutely (when asked if Pant is the future captain after Hitman). Lal told Jagran TV. "I always feel that the captain must deserve his place among the top three in the team. He (Pant) is someone who is not afraid to play his game, can handle pressure well, can take the team out of tough situations and such a player can be a great leader. It will be good for Indian cricket if we can have an aggressive player like Pant as captain of the side," he further asserted.

"If Pant can play consistently, he will be a hero for the Indian team. If you play well in red-ball format, there are chances that you will do well in white-ball format too with a little bit of adjustment. However, it’s not necessary that if you play well in the white-ball format, you will be able to perform the same way in the red-ball format because in Test cricket, you need a different set of skills, the ability to handle different kind of pressure, physical fitness to sustain five-day cricket. I have seen Rishabh Pant changing the tides both in Tests and limited-overs formats. It is not about scoring centuries, but a century that comes under difficult circumstances and helps to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat," added the former Bengal coach.

Pant has now been given some breather and he won't be part of the Shikhar Dhawan-led Indian ODI side, which is gearing up to face West Indies on the Caribbean island from July 22. The series will be followed by five T20Is versus the two-time winners, where Rohit, Pant and the likes will mark their return from a short break after the England tour.

Is Rishabh Pant the future captain after Rohit Sharma? Former India batter shares his take

Rohit Sharma-led India ended a very successful tour of England on Sunday (July 17). After India lost a golden opportunity to win the rescheduled fifth and final Test, from 2021, versus Ben Stokes-led England, the visitors turned it around in the white-ball leg, beating Jos Buttler & Co. in T20Is as well as in ODIs (by 2-1 margin).

While the T20Is was easily pocketed by India, taking an unassailable 2-0 lead before losing the finale by 17 runs, the 50-over series lived upto expectations and went to the final ODI with the scoreline 1-1. In the third and final match, India dismissed England for 259 in 45.5 overs -- riding on Hardik Pandya's 4/24 -- before Hardik's 71 (55) and Rishabh Pant's 125 not out rescued India from 72/4 to take them to a stunning five-wicket series win in the tour finale.

After the end of the England tour, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra picked India's most valuable white-ball player. The white-ball sides comprises several stars such as Rohit, Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Suryakumar Yadav, Pant, Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja Hardik, etc., however, Chopra picked the latter.

"Hardik Pandya - he has been absolutely stellar. One thing is getting proved that he is India's most valuable player in white-ball cricket. I don't think there is going to be anyone who is going to come close to him," Chopra said on his Youtube channel.

"If Hardik Pandya is fit, his replacement is not available. You will get many spin-bowling all-rounders in India, you get them easily, in different formats, but you don't get a fast-bowling all-rounder at all, it is not possible at all," Chopra added.

Hardik has been in sensational form since his return to competitive cricket, starting from IPL 2022. In the 15th IPL season, he led debutants Gujarat Titans (GT) to the mega title, with 487 runs and eight scalps overall, contributed with the bat in the home T20Is versus South Africa, led India for the first time during their 2-0 series whitewash over Ireland in the shortest format, in Dublin, won the Player-of-the-Match in the India-England first T20I and ended as the Player-of-the-Series in the ODis versus the Three Lions.

Not Jasprit Bumrah or Rishabh Pant! Aakash Chopra picks Team India's most valuable white-ball player

Hardik Pandya and Rishabh Pant stood tall for India during their stiff 260-run chase versus hosts England as Rohit Sharma-led India won the three-match ODI series 2-1 on Sunday (July 17) in Manchester. After Hardik's 4/24 dismissed Jos Buttler-led England for 259 in 45.5 overs, India were in a spot of bother at 72 for 4 when Pant-Hardik joined forces.

The duo batted sensibly before Hardik took on the bowlers and allowed Pant to play calculative cricket. While Hardik fell for a 55-ball 71, Pant continued from his end and slammed his maiden ODI ton to guide India to a stunning five-wicket series win over the world champions. After the victory, many former cricketers have hailed the batting pair of Pant-Hardik.

Joining the bandwagon, Sanjay Manjrekar also heaped praise on the dynamic pair and told Sports18, "Yes, just hoping that Hardik can keep his fitness together. No issues about Rishabh Pant. What we saw in that last one day, I was completely floored by the sheer talent and ability of these two guys, temperament as well, built a long partnership and how easily, in the end, India won. Thanks to Rishabh Pant for staying there till the end. So yes, high-quality batters, and they’re going to be batting mostly at number 4 and 5 whether it’s T20 Cricket or 50 overs cricket or Pant could be opening as well. In 2019, we had a lot of issues finding a proper middle order but now we have some quality supply."

'I was completely....' - Sanjay Manjrekar heaps praise on Rishabh Pant-Hardik Pandya after England ODIs

Hardik Pandya`s impressive all-round show (71 runs and 4 wickets) along with Rishabh Pant's fantastic maiden century (125 not out) in the 50-over cricket guided India to a convincing five-wicket win over England in the third and final ODI and 2-1 win in the three-match series at Old Trafford, here on Sunday.

Pandya first starred with the ball before joining forces with Pant at a crucial juncture in the run chase as the two batters added 133 for the fifth wicket to set up India`s five-wicket win.

All-rounder Hardik (4/24) and leg-spinner Chahal`s (3/60) superb bowling efforts helped India bowl out England for 259 in 45.5 overs. Skipper Jos Buttler played a vital knock (60 off 80) for England, who were invited to bat first by India captain Rohit Sharma.

Apart from Buttler, Jason Roy (41), Moeen Ali (34), and Craig Overton (32) were the other main contributors with the bat for the hosts. Besides Pandya and Chahal, Mohammed Siraj (2/66), and Ravindra Jadeja (1/21) were the other wicket-takers for India.

Chasing a challenging total, India were off to a bad start as Reece Topley removed Shikhar Dhawan early. Dhawan drove a full delivery but couldn`t keep it down and Roy took the catch at backward point.

Skipper Rohit Sharma looked in fine touch before Topley dismissed him. The ball was just outside off and Rohit (17) pushed and edged behind to the lone slip fielder Joe Root.

As has been the case in recent matches, Virat Kohli looked good once again but flattered to deceive again as Topley bowled just outside off and the star batter nicked it behind again and walked back for 17, leaving India in trouble. Suryakumar Yadav scored 16 before he was sent back to the hut by Craig Overton.

India were now reeling at 72/4, needing a big partnership and they got it with Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya, who launched a brilliant counter-attack. The pair embarked on a partnership of 133 runs, which came in only 115 deliveries.

Their crucial partnership had some audacious shots, coupled with sensible defending. They found it easy to pierce the field at ease, as the England bowlers did not have any answers to their brilliance. Both Hardik and Pant brought up their half-centuries and started to up the ante, which brought Pandya`s wicket courtesy of a brilliant catch by Carse.

When Pandya got out in the 36th over of the innings, there was still a lot to be done as India needed 55 runs to win. And, Pant became even more aggressive and went on to hit his first ODI century.

The wicket-keeper batter treated the England bowlers with disdain, smashing David Willey for five fours in an over. In the end, Pant remained not out with 125 off 113 and along with Ravindra Jadeja (7 not out off 15) helped India to a thumping five-wicket victory in 42.1 overs and a 2-1 series win.

Reece Topley (3/35) was England`s most successful bowler while Brydon Carse (1/45) and Craig Overton (1/54) also chipped in with one wicket each.

Earlier, opener Jason Roy showed aggressive intent and fetched three fours right in the very first over but India struck at the other end just nine balls into the game.

Siraj, who returned to the playing XI in place of an unfit Jasprit Bumrah, made an impact straight away by getting rid of Jonny Bairstow (0), who got a leading edge while attempting to work one on the leg side and the substitute Shreyas Iyer took an easy catch.

Joe Root (0), who came to bat next, couldn`t do anything as Siraj forced him to give an easy catch to the slip fielder, leaving England in trouble at 12/2 at the end of two overs. However, unfazed by the double strike, Roy and Ben Stokes decided to counterattack and struck a flurry of boundaries. And in no time, they raced to their 50-run partnership.

With main bowlers not controlling the flow of runs, skipper Rohit Sharma introduced Hardik Pandya into the attack. The all-rounder kept denying Roy the room, which the batter usually craves and that resulted in the wicket. On a short ball, Roy got a top edge in his attempt to smash it as Rishabh Pant took the catch and India got their third wicket.

After a few overs, Pandya struck again to remove Stokes, who came down the track but couldn`t play the short ball with authority and the bowler himself took the catch, putting England in deep trouble at 74-4 after 13.2 overs.

From there on, the onus was on skipper Jos Buttler and Moeen Ali to bail England out of trouble. They bided their time but eventually got into their groove, stitching a crucial partnership and putting a bit of pressure back on the Indian bowlers.

Just when it looked like their partnership was flourishing and leading England towards a decent total, Ravindra Jadeja struck in his very first over and gave India the much-needed wicket of Moeen, who edged the ball down the leg side and Pant took a brilliant catch.

However, skipper Buttler held the England innings together and hit a crucial fifty. With more than 17 overs left in the innings and England already half down, Buttler along with Liam Livingstone needed to bat deep but Pandya once again changed the course of the game in a matter of three deliveries.

In the 37th over of the innings, both Livingstone and Buttler looked to take on Pandya on the short ball but were caught brilliantly by Jadeja in the deep on both occasions. David Willey, who had scored crucial runs for England in the previous game, looked in fine touch again and was beginning to find a boundary an over but Chahal returned to the attack and put an end to the cameo (18) with a slower one.

The lower-order batters hit the leg-spinner for a few boundaries, but Chahal picked up the final two wickets in the same over to polish off the tail and end England`s innings at 259 in 45.5 overs.

Also read | BCCI had Rs 400 million in bank when I joined and Rs 476.8 billion when I was banned, claims Lalit Modi Skipper Rohit Sharma looked in fine touch before Topley dismissed him. Pant ton, Pandya's all-round show help India to 2-1 series win over England

Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya were the star performers for Team India as they clinched the three-match ODI series versus England, in Manchester, on Sunday (July 17). After bundling out Jos Buttler-led England for 259 45.5 overs, the Rohit Sharma-led side was in trouble after being reduced to 38/3, further to 72/4, before Hardik-Pant's 133-run fifth-wicket stand rescued India and they went onto win the series decider by five wickets (claming the series 2-1).

While Hardik had already impressed with the bat, returning with 4 for 24, he slammed a match-winning 55-ball 71 before Pant rose to the occasion, with the series on the line, and smashed his maiden ODI ton. Ending with a fine 113-ball 125 not out, Pant was adjudged the Player-of-the-Match whereas Hardik walked away with the Player-of-the-Series award. After India's win, former all-rounder Yuvraj Singh lavished huge praise on Pant-Hardik and revealed how he also had a role to play in Pant's heroics in Manchester.

"Looks like the 45-minute conversation made sense!! Well played @RishabhPant17. That's how you pace your innings. @hardikpandya7, great to watch #indiavseng," tweeted Yuvraj.

ENG vs IND: Yuvraj Singh reveals how he had a role to play in Rishabh Pant's 125 not out in 3rd ODI

In pursuit of 260, Rohit Sharma-led India were in a spot of bother in the third and final ODI versus Jos Buttler-led England at Old Trafford, Manchester on Sunday (July 17). India lost their famed top three -- skipper Rohit, Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli -- very soon and were reduced to 38 for 3 before Suryakumar Yadav's dismissal further pushed India on the back foot, reeling at 72 for 4.

From thereon, Hardik Pandya -- who had helped India dismiss England for 259 in 45.5 overs courtesy of his 4/24 -- joined Rishabh Pant and the duo batted sensibly in the initial few overs before the all-rounder attacked swiftly and allowed the keeper-batter to play freely. Without dropping much sweat, the duo stitched an invaluable 133-run fifth-wicket match-winning stand. Despite Hardik being out for a 55-ball 71, Pant stayed till the end to ensure India went past the finish line, by five wickets, with his unbeaten 125-run knock, off 113 balls.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, Hardik revealed the chat he had with centurion Pant. He said, "I was just repeating the same thing and even told him that I am repeating it too much! Let’s have a partnership, take the match as close as possible, and finish the match. Pehle match toh close kar, phir tujhe enjoy karna hai to kar le! (Finish the match first, then you can enjoy if you want).“And then he opened up. Everyone knows when he starts hitting, we are like ab hum baith jaate hain, chalo aap khelo (okay, now we can sit back and relax and you can hit)."

Stressing on the talent they both have, the run rate or the remaining number of overs wasn't going to be an issue. In this regard, Hardik added, "The talent that he has and the talent that I perhaps have – there was no need to take any risks at that stage. Without any risks, we could score those runs as there were not many runs to get. The only way England could come back is if we lose back-to-back wickets."

'I was just.....' - Hardik Pandya reveals chat with Rishabh Pant in duo's match-winning stand vs England

Rishabh Pant slammed a stunning century in the series-deciding third and final ODI against England at Old Trafford in Manchester on Sunday (June 17) to help the Men in Blue clinch a historic 2-1 series win. Pant played a sensational knock of unbeaten 125 off 113 balls to help India chase down the target of 260 runs comfortably with 47 balls to spare.

Pant had started India's ongoing tour of England with a brilliant century in the one-off fifth Test and the swashbuckling wicket-keeper batter ended the tour with a ton in the third ODI on Sunday. The left-hander single-handedly took the game away from England with his unbeaten 125-run knock which was laced with 16 fours and 2 sixes.

Asked to chase down a target of 260 runs in the series decider at Old Trafford, India were left reeling at 72/4 at one stage when Pant joined forces with Hardik Pandya in the middle to steady the ship for the visitors. Despite India being under pressure, Pant and Pandya played their natural game and took the England bowlers to the cleaners.

With his maiden ODI ton, Pant achieved an elusive feat as he became the first Asian wicket-keeper to score a century in both ODIs and Tests in England. No other Asian wicket-keeper batter had managed to achieve the feat before Pant in the history of the game.

Along with Pant, Hardik was also one of the heroes of India's victory in the third ODI as the star all-rounder produced a magnificent performance with the bat and the ball. He picked up a four-wicket haul to run through the England batting line-up before scoring a brilliant 71 to help India chase down the target of 260 runs.

ODI and Test tons in England! Rishabh Pant becomes 1st Asian wicket-keeper batter to achieve remarkable feat

Rishabh Pant produced fine innings for India during their tricky 260-run chase in the ODI series decider versus Jos Buttler-led England on Sunday (July 17) in Manchester. After Rohit Sharma-led India dismissed England for 259 in 45.5 overs, riding on Hardik Pandya's 4 for 24, India were in a spot of bother being reduced to 72 for 4 before centurion Pant and Hardik (55-ball 71) rescued India and took them to a memorable 2-1 series win.

Pant, who flopped in India's 247-run chase in the second and penultimate ODI, had a tough job in hand after India lost their famed top 3 -- skipper Rohit, Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli -- for cheap whereas Suryakumar Yadav also fell for 16. Thus, the onus fell on Pant and Hardik and the duo played sensibly before taking on the English attack and closed the run-chase in 42.1 overs, with five wickets in hand. While Hardik missed out on his maiden white-ball ton, Pant scored his first-ever century in the format and even hit the winning runs. Here's Rohit's reaction for Pant after the swashbuckling left-hander ended proceedings for the Men in Blue with a reserve-sweep four:

On the other hand, Player-of-the-Match Pant stated, "Hopefully I remember (this knock) for the rest of my life. I was focusing on one ball at a time when I was batting. When your team is under pressure and you bat like that .. something I aspire to do. I always enjoy playing in England, at the same time enjoy the atmosphere and the situation. The more you play the more experience you gain. Nothing to take away from the bowlers, it was a good wicket to bat on and the bowlers did a commendable job to restrict them, they were brilliant not only today but for the entire series." India won their first-ever ODI series in SENA countries, since late 2018 in Australia, with the victory over world champions England. Meanwhile, Buttler & Co. also lost only their third bilateral ODI series at home since 2015.

India have had a peculiar year with frequent captaincy changes. So far, six players have captained India in the calendar year, with more than five months to go in 2022. Apart from regular captain Rohit Sharma, the likes of KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah have led the team across formats.

Ahead of the start of the 1st T20I between India and England, in Southampton on Thursday (July 07), skipper Rohit -- who missed the fifth and final rescheduled Test between India and England in Edgbaston due to contracting the Covid-19 virus -- broke his silence over the frequent captaincy changes in the Indian camp.

"No. It's something we have prepared. We know the scheduling, we got to have the understanding, that players will be swapped every now and then. You can create your bench strength as well, a lot of opportunities for guys to come out and play. Exciting times, these guys have been here for a while playing in Ireland and played a couple of games here as well," said Rohit.

ENG vs IND: When and where to watch England vs India 1st T20I match - IST time and streaming details

India dominated proceedings for most parts in the just-concluded Edgbaston Test before losing the contest by seven wickets as the five-match series, which commenced during 2021 English summer, ended in a 2-2 stalemate on Tuesday (July 06).

In Rohit Sharma's absence, India were led by pacer Jasprit Bumrah whereas Rishabh Pant was his deputy. India were asked to bat first as they posted 416 after centuries from Pant and Ravindra Jadeja. In reply, England posted 284 courtesy of Jonny Bairstow's ton, giving a 132-run healthy lead to Team India. India, however, didn't capitalise and only managed to post 245 in their second essay, setting up a challenging 378-run target. While the target was a stiff one, India had a chance to completely bat England out of the contest by setting up anything over 450, however, they fell flat. In the run-chase, England were 109/3 before tons from Bairstow and Root took India home.

After the match, former Indian stumper Deep Dasgupta highlighted a glaring issue which has been a big factor in the national side's recent failures.

"It is very important for the team to have a stable captain. The position of the captain had been really [unstable] in the last few months, especially during England Test or Ireland tour," Dasgupta told ANI. "Due to injury and any other reason, we had to shuffle between captains. But now Rohit is fit and is available for the upcoming games," he stated.

"With only 2-3 months left for the T20 World Cup, there are many players who have showcased their spectacular performances. India is left with 20-22 games before the World Cup, so the selectors might have started shortlisting the players for the big tournament. Each and every match will be very important from now on," Dasgupta added.

India have been led by Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya and Bumrah since September 2021. Thus, they need to have stability in the captaincy role heading into the 2022 T20 World Cup, to be held in Australia.

Important for India to have a stable captain: Former stumper highlights glaring issue after Edgbaston Test

Rishabh Pant endured a difficult patch in the T20I series against South Africa at home where he also led the Indian team in the absence of Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul. However, the wicket-keeper batter was quick to bounce back and was among the runs in the recently-concluded Edgbaston Test against England where he notched up a stunning century in India's first innings and followed it up with a fifty in the second.

While he has been dominating in Test cricket over the last few years, Pant, who made his T20I debut for India back in 2017, is yet to establish his credentials for the Men in Blue in the shortest format. Known for his aggressive brand of cricket and swashbuckling style, Pant is arguable one of the best hitters around. However, he has failed to do justice to his talent in T20Is for India.

Former India cricketer Wasim Jaffer believes Pant should be promoted to the top of the order to unlock his potential in T20Is for India. India currently have a number of contenders for the opening slot in T20Is with captain Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul as first-choice pairing and the likes of Ishan Kishan and Ruturaj Gaikwad also in the fray.

However, despite the intense competition for the opening slots in the Indian team, Jaffer has suggested the team management can use Pant as an opener in the upcoming T20I series against England. Jaffer believes Pant can be a game-changer for India at the top of the order.

"Indian think tank should think about opening with Rishabh Pant in T20Is. I think that's the spot where he can blossom," Jaffer said in a tweet.

After losing the one-off Test against England on Tuesday, India will now lock horns with the hosts in a three-match T20I series starting from Thursday (July 07). India tour of WI: Shikhar Dhawan to lead ODI side as Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli & other big guns rested

Rishabh Pant continued his purple patch with the willow in India's second innings of the ongoing one-off fifth Test against England at Edgbaston in Birmingham. After slamming a stunning century in the first innings, the wicket-keeper batter played another brilliant knock of 57 runs in the second innings to help India extend their lead beyond the 300-run mark and take control of the game.

Pant notched up his half-century during the first session on Day 4 (Monday) as he once again displayed his power-hitting skills and played in his own swashbuckling style. He notched up his fifty off just 76 deliveries before getting dismissed by Jack Leach on 57 off 86 balls.

With his brilliant half-century, Pant broke a 72-year-old Test record held by former West Indies wicket-keeper batter Clyde Walcott. Dhoni had scored 77 and 74 runs in the 2011 Test across two innings in a game that India lost. Pant turned out to be the hero with the bat for India in their first innings in Edgbaston after the visitors were reduced to 98/5. He combined with fellow centurion Ravindra Jadeja (104) to add 222 runs for the fifth wicket and helo India post a strong total of 416 runs on the board. Rishabh Pant breaks 72-year-old record with terrific knocks in Edgbaston Test against England

Skipper Jasprit Bumrah held sway with a mesmerizing all-round performance, which included a world record feat with the bat and an incisive spell with the ball as India seized complete control from England on a rain-hit second day of the rescheduled fifth Test here on Saturday.

Such was the power of Bumrah's all-round show (31 off 16 balls and 3/35) in his first appearance as India captain that it easily overshadowed Ravindra Jadeja's superbly constructed third Test hundred that took India to a commanding first innings score of 416.

England were in all sorts of trouble with half of the team back in the pavilion as the scoreboard made a sorry reading at 84 for 5. The hosts still 332 runs behind the visitors. In the first session, Stuart Broad must have had a feeling of 'deja vu' when he was literally butchered by the stand-in Indian captain, who scored 29 runs with the willow and also was gifted six extra runs to make it 35, highest ever in a single over in Test cricket.

In his first match at the helm as captain, Bumrah would have never thought that he would pip Brian Lara's maximum runs (28 runs) in a single Test match over, which remained intact for 18 years. George Bailey and Keshav Maharaj though had equalled the feat.

Broad can't be faulted if he remembered that September, 2007 night in Durban, when Yuvraj Singh pummelled him for six sixes in an over. He got his 550th Test wicket on the day but by the end of it all, Bumrah had wiped that wry smile off his face.

When England came out to bat, the skipper had nicely warmed up and bowled a menacing first spell and for a change was rewarded for even putting his "foot wrong" on two occasions that resulted in additional deliveries which fetched him a couple of wickets.

After two days of play, India hold all the aces and look good to retain the Pataudi Trophy and stay in contention for a place in the World Test Championship final. While India next play a Test series against Bangladesh in December, the second day in Edgbaston might have provided India with a realistic long-term captaincy option in traditional format as and when Rohit Sharma decides to call time on his Test career.

Bumrah was good with his bowling changes, field placements and also DRS call of his own bowling. In all, a complete package in place.

India's 'MVP' Jadeja

At the start of the day, Jadeja reaffirmed his status as India's most valuable player across formats as he scored his best Test hundred -- 104 off 194 balls. This century, though, was of a far better quality than his earlier two, especially if one factors in the conditions, match situation and quality of opposition bowling.

Jadeja hit 13 boundaries, and his near four and half hours stay at the crease, gave Pant an opportunity to play his natural attacking game, even as the former dourly defended as and when required. A punchy drive through the cover-point region got him his third century four months after he got the second one in Mohali.

Having already scored 2500 runs in Test cricket alongside taking 242 wickets, Jadeja can safely be termed as the best all-rounder that the Indian team has had since the great Kapil Dev. A Test batting average of 37 plus is better than many specialists who have played for India over the years.

The 'Boom Boom' show

Bumrah used the bat like a sword and even the top-edges seemed like ball hitting the "sweet spot" as four boundaries and two sixes came off Broad's over. There were hooks, pulls and drives to enthral the capacity crowd.
The Indian captain, in fact, gave the hosts a dose of 'Bazball' (Brendon McCullum's attacking philosophy), which had become a trending lingo in English cricket during the past few weeks.

While Rishabh Pant's century for the ages and Jadeja's third Test ton set up the platform, one can't discount the 93 runs that India added with contributions from number 9, 10 and 11.

As far as England's bowling is concerned, James Anderson (5/60), who is a month shy of turning 40, is still class personified, as he got his 32nd five-wicket haul in Test matches. But 40 extra runs, including 14 no balls, will certainly haunt England in the long run.

Blowing away English top-order

Once he came out to bowl, Bumrah had by then already known left-handed opener Alex Lees' (6) weaknesses. He went round the wicket and got one to nip back slightly with the angle as it breached the opener's defence.
In the case of Zak Crawley (9), Bumrah bowled a fuller delivery on the 'fourth off-stump' and Crawley's drive was snapped up by Shubman Gill stationed at third slip.

Similarly, after another rain break, he tested Ollie Pope (10) with another fuller delivery that was slightly wider and the expansive drive only ended in Shreyas Iyer's hands in the second slip.

But India saved their best for the last as Mohammed Siraj got one to rear up awkwardly with wobbly seam as England's best batter Joe Root (31) could only get into a tangle and offer a simple catch to Rishabh Pant behind stumps.

Jasprit Bumrah rattles England with bat and ball as India take control in Edgbaston Test

Indian wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant took the England bowlers to the cleaners to notch up a stunning century in the ongoing rescheduled fifth Test between the two sides at Edgbaston in Birmingham on Friday (July 01). India got off to a disappointing start on Day 1 after England won the toss and asked the visitors to bat first in the all-important clash. However, Pant then combined with Ravindra Jadeja to help India fight back.

Pant came out to bat at number five when India were reduced to 64/3 inside 23 overs. The likes of Virat Kohli (11) and Shreyas Iyer (15) too departed in quick succession after Pant's arrival before the left-hander joined forces with Jadeja in the middle to steady the ship for the visitors.

Pant looked in fine form as he toyed with the England bowling attack despite India being under massive pressure after losing half their side on 98. He raced to his half-century off just 51 balls before stepping up the ante to complete his century in just 89 balls. He went on to break MS Dhoni's record of the fastest century by an Indian wicket-keeper in Tests with his 89-ball ton.

Dhoni had slammed a century off 93 balls in the Faisalabad Test match against Pakistan back in 2006 - a record which stood for 16 years before Pant broke it on Friday with his heroics against England. Pant has notched up four centuries in Test cricket so far in his Test career and is just one short of equalling Dhoni's record for most centuries by an Indian wicket-keeper in the longest format.

Dhoni scored 5 centuries in his Test career and currently holds the record for most hundreds by an Indian keeper in Tests. Pant has so far scored all his Test centuries overseas and is the only visiting keeper-batter to have scored two centuries on English soil.

'Knew you were going to be special': Sehwag responds to Pant after India batter calls him one of the best

Team India were in a spot of bother on Day 1 of the ongoing rescheduled fifth Test against England at Edgbaston in Birmingham on Friday (July 01) after losing half their side for 98 runs inside just 28 overs. However, Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja turned out to be the saviours for the visitors with a brilliant partnership of 222 runs for the sixth wicket to help India bounce back from a poor start.

Pant was the stand-out performer with the bat for India on Day 1 as he continued his exploits in the whites. The left-hand dasher, who is known for his attacking approach irrespective of the format, slammed the England bowlers to all parts of the ground en route to a stunning knock of 146 runs off 111 balls.

Pant went after the England bowlers right from the start of his innings despite India being under pressure. While he was sent back by Joe Root on 146, Jadeja remained unbeaten on 83 to help India post 338/7 on Day 1.

Following the conclusion of the day's play, former India cricketer Wasim Jaffer labelled Pant as India's best Test batsman at present. During a discussion on ESPN Cricinfo, Jaffer was asked if he believes Pant is currently India's best batter in the longest format. The former India batter had a firm response.

"Yes definitely. The way he has played some knocks of late, you can definitely call him India's best Test batter at the moment," he said.

Jaffer also went on to explain how Pant's knock and his 222-run stand with Jadeja has put India ahead in the all-important fifth Test against England. Jaffer said the knock will go down as one of Pant's greatest if India go on to win the game and clinch the series 3-1.

"Yes. Not only his knock but also the partnership with Ravindra Jadeja was incredible. If India wins this Test, I think it will be one of Pant's best Test innings," said Jaffer.

"Especially in conditions like England, where you know the bowler is bowling well, then it becomes important to disturb his (bowler’s) line and length. I keep trying that I do not play in the same manner so that the bowler gets mentally disturbed," he added.
