Rishabh Pant, who is gearing up for his competitive return since his horrific car crash in the upcoming IPL 2024 edition, hailed Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal. The youngster ended the recently-concluded India-England Test series with the most runs. 'Pant might play T20 World Cup if he...': BCCI secretary Jay Shah drops major hint

Indian Premier League (IPL) side Delhi Capitals head coach has opined on Rishabh Pant coming back to the side as captain and said he'll slot straight in the captaincy role if he's fit enough. IPL 2024: Delhi Capitals coach Ricky Ponting offers clarity on Rishabh Pant's role in upcoming season

Former Indian batter Robin Uthappa has advised Rishabh Pant to not rush his comeback ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 edition, which gets underway on March 22. Pant has worked hard on regaining full fitness after a horrific car crash in Dec 2022. Since then, he has been away from action and will mark his return to competitive cricket during the forthcoming season. DC franchise has already announced that the swashbuckling left-hander will return as the captain but won't keep wickets during the first half at least.

'Pant shouldn’t rush the process'

Ahead of Pant's much-awaited return, Uthappa told in an interview with InsideSport, "Well as far as Rishabh Pant is concerned, it all depends on his fitness and how he recovers from what has been a tough year and a half for him. I think, we should send all those energies to him that he recovers and comes back to his best. It’s good to see He’s back in the nets, he’s hitting the ball well, doing centre wicketkeeping practice. He shouldn’t rush the process."

'Let's not...': Sunil Gavaskar opines on Rishabh Pant's awaited comeback during IPL 2024

Rishabh Pant will lead the Delhi Capitals (DC) in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 edition, confirmed co-owner of the franchise Parth Jindal. Pant is gearing up for his much-awaited return to competitive cricket since his fatal car accident in Dec 2022. Jindal, however, revealed that Pant will play solely as a batter in the first half of the tournament.

"Rishabh is batting. He's running. He has started his wicketkeeping. He is likely to be fully fit for the IPL. I am expecting Rishabh to play IPL and he will lead from match one. First seven games, we are going to play him only as a batter and depending on how his body reacts, we will take a call for the rest of the IPL," Jindal said while speaking to ESPN Cricinfo.

Pant has been posting videos of his preparations for IPL 2024. He has missed a considerable amount of cricket following his horrific car crash. With him returning for DC, it will bolster their squad as the team struggled in IPL 2023 and ended at the ninth spot under David Warner. While the Delhi camp is happy to reappoint Pant as the captain, they are believed to be taking it slow with the Indian star batter as he won't be donning the gloves at least in the first half of the mega event.

Jindal also opined on pacer Anrich Nortje, who has missed a lot of cricket in recent times due to injury concerns.
Indian Premier League (IPL) side Delhi Capitals (DC) head coach Ricky Ponting has said that Rishabh Pant is going to play the upcoming 2024 season. Rishabh Pant opens up on near-fatal car accident in December 2022, says 'I was aware of the wounds'

India's wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant recently opened up on the time when he was being compared to legendary cricketer MS Dhoni. Just when Pant was in his early days in international cricket, he was constantly compared to Dhoni. While comparisons with Dhoni started as soon as Pant came to the highest level, he was massively trolled for any on-field mistake, especially when Dhoni was away from the game due to a sabbatical following the 2019 ODI World Cup. Many used to call for Dhoni's comeback, judging Pant's skills on any mistake.

Pant, who survived a horrific car crash in late 2022, spoke at length on his comparisons with Dhoni and said in an interview with Star Sports, “First of all, I didn't understand why questions were raised. I had just made it to the team, and people were talking about being a replacement. Why were people raising such questions at a youngster? Why are you comparing? There shouldn't be any comparison at all. Some have played five matches and the others have played 500."

"It's been such a long journey, so many ups and downs, so the comparison is not fair. I used to really feel very bad. I used to go back to my room and cry at 20-21 years of age. Under stress, I couldn't breathe. So much pressure and I didn't know what to do. I missed a stumping in Mohali (during the India-Australia ODIs in early 2019), and the crowd started to chant ‘Dhoni Dhoni’,” he further added.

Pant described his relationship with Dhoni as well. Despite the constant comparisons, the Pant-Dhoni bond has only grown stronger. "I always find it difficult to explain my relationship with MS. Dhoni. There are some with whom you can talk freely. I discuss everything with MSD. I have learned so much from him. 'I used to go to my room and cry' - Rishabh Pant makes heartfelt confession on MS Dhoni comparisons

India might have clinched a thriller against Afghanistan in the third T20I in Bengaluru and, with that, a T20I series win, yet they have plenty to ponder over with regards to filling in the best keeper-batters in the final 15 for the T20 World Cup later this year.

With the ‘problem of plenty’ starting to bother the team management, head coach Rahul Dravid rues the lack of T20Is in the lead-up to the marquee event, saying the upcoming season of the IPL will serve as the only parameter for squad selection for the 20-team tournament in the Caribbean and the USA.

While Jitesh Sharma played two out of the three T20Is against Afghanistan, Sanju Samson got the chance in the final game, getting out on a first-ball duck. On the other hand, Ishan Kishan is currently unavailable for selection owing to mental fatigue, while KL Rahul and returning Rishabh Pant are waiting in the wings to get slotted in. With five top-notch keeper-batters available for selection, Dravid feels it’s a good headache for the team.

They're lucky to have both of them, but Rishabh Pant, before his injury, was box office, and hopefully, after his injury, will be box office as well,” KL added. Meanwhile, KL Rahul has also taken up wicketkeeping duties in South Africa, with KS Bharat in the squad as a backup option.

Nasser Hussain predicts massive 2024 for returning 'box-office' cricketer Rishabh Pant

Rishabh Pant is all set to be present at the Delhi Capitals (DC) table during the IPL 2024 mini-auction in Dubai on Tuesday (Dec 19). The wicketkeeper-batter will be at his first-ever official engagement after a near-fatal car accident on Dec 30, 2022. Since then, he has been in a recovery mode and is set to return during IPL 2024.

While it isn't confirmed whether Pant will be raising the paddle, his presence has been confirmed to Cricbuzz by a member of the ownership group of the 2020 runners-up. With this, Pant is set to become the first reigning captain to actively participate in a live IPL auction. It is to be noted that the DC franchise had announced him as the captain for next year's mega event, which is likely to kick off on March 22 in India.

'Lucky to be alive': Rishabh Pant recalls horrific car crash before joining DC table at IPL auction

Rishabh Pant is all set to make his dear comeback to the cricket field during next year’s Indian Premier League (IPL), his franchise Delhi Capitals has confirmed. The left-handed batter has been out of cricket since suffering a fatal road accident on New Year’s Eve last year. Currently undergoing rehab at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, Pant will return to lead DC in IPL 2024.

As per the DC management, Pant is likely to regain full fitness by February-end next year, and even then, his participation in IPL 2024 will be subject to clearance from the NCA doctors. Having undergone knee surgery earlier and dealing with back and ankle-related issues all this while, chances of him being able to keep wickets are still under the dark cloud.

The source close to the information revealed Pant will only keep wickets if the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) permits it; otherwise, the 26-year-old will continue playing as a fielder and a batter.

"If he is not keeping, he will definitely be on the field and will lead the side," a franchise official stated.

Considering the scenario where Pant doesn’t get the clearance from the BCCI to keep wickets during the IPL, he can be used as an ‘Impact Player’.

Pant’s absence a loss for cricket

Emerging as the most-feared batter in Tests, Pant’s absence from cricket held back DC and Team India’s chances of doing well in top events this year.

While Delhi fared poorly without Pant, finishing ninth on the points table, with them facing wicketkeeping troubles, India missed Pant mainly during the World Test Championship Final against Australia, which they lost by an embarrassing margin.

After missing the whole year, including IPL 2023, the Asia Cup and the home World Cup, Pant will also be away during India’s tour of South Africa 2023/24, their home series against Afghanistan and England early next year.

Although KL Rahul kept wickets during the Asia Cup and the home World Cup, faring decently, Ishan Kishan and KS Bharat shared keeping duties in red-ball cricket.

With Rahul and Kishan both picked in the squad for the two Tests against South Africa, reports suggest Ishan could keep wickets, while Rahul might play as a pure batter.

Former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra has lavished huge praise on Rishabh Pant, who is still recovering from the injuries he sustained in a car crash in late 2022. Rishabh Pant comeback date confirmed by former India skipper Sourav Ganguly

Australia legend Adam Gilchrist praised injured-and-out India keeper-batter Rishabh Pant, saying he is amazed to see Pant's impact on batters worldwide. An attacking opener during his time, Gilchrist said wicketkeepers have brought a change to their approach in batting following Pant’s exploits in his brief career.

Pant made his international debut in 2017 and emerged as the top batter in the India Team, especially in Tests. Averaging around 44 and striking at over 73, Pant is a top-notch keeper-batter in Tests. His performance against Australia during India’s previous tour, where he scored 274 in five innings, including a match-winning 89 at the Gabba, Brisbane, earned him the reputation of a destructive force to reckon with.

"I think Rishabh has inspired a lot of wicket-keeper batters around the world to play that [aggressive] way. It is fascinating for such a young man to have such an impact that Rishabh has had, and others are responding and playing in that positive manner," Gilchrist told PTI.

Following a car accident late last year, Pant remained out of action and will miss the upcoming Cricket World Cup at home starting October 5.

Currently, he is undergoing rehab at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru and is said to be fit for an on-field return shortly.

KL over Ishan behind the wickets at CWC

A three-time World Cup winner with Australia, Gilchrist has backed makeshift keeper-batter KL Rahul to take care of wicketkeeping duties during the World Cup, calling selectors' keen interest in having Rahul over regular gloveman Ishan Kishan for the showpiece event as impressive.

Speaking on India ticking most boxes, especially having two keeper-batters in their provisional 15, Gilchrist said India is well stocked, with options under their belt, they can deliver on the bigger stage.

"They [India] are well stocked. They have got a couple of [wicketkeeping] options there, obviously, when KL was out with his injury, Ishan Kishan took his opportunity and played really well, and now they find themselves in the team together, so that's a wonderful case of taking an opportunity.

"Being positive, and then, forcing the selectors into keeping you in the team [is impressive]. It seems like KL is gonna be the one who is going to continue with the gloves, but it does not seem to hinder Ishan Kishan's batting, he seems to be playing really well, carefree, attacking and dangerous," Gilchrist added.

Meanwhile, after winning the Asia Cup 2023, India will host Australia for three ODIs. They will also open their Cricket World Cup campaign against the former five-time winners in Chennai on October 8.

ALSO READ: CWC 2023: Team India make the cut as former Aussie stumper Adam Gilchrist predicts semi-finalists "I think Rishabh has inspired a lot of wicket-keeper batters around the world to play that [aggressive] way. KL over Ishan behind the wickets at CWC A three-time World Cup winner with Australia, Gilchrist has backed makeshift keeper-batter KL Rahul to take care of wicketkeeping duties during the World Cup, calling selectors' keen interest in having Rahul over regular gloveman Ishan Kishan for the showpiece event as impressive. Adam Gilchrist in awe of Rishabh Pant’s impact on keeper-batters worldwide; backs KL Rahul over Kishan in CWC

As India gear up for the marquee clash against Pakistan in the ongoing Asia Cup, Captain Rohit Sharma showered praise on coach Rahul Dravid, one record he wishes to break in the ODIs, and his thoughts on Rishabh Pant's game plan. The veteran batter - who holds the record of the highest individual score in ODI cricket, is close to breaking an unlikely record.

In a brief chat with the Indian Express, the Indian captain expressed his desire to break Chris Gayle's sixes record in the ODIs. While six-hitting machine Gayle has hit 553 sixes, Rohit is 16 behind with 539 sixes in his name. With India, due to play at least three matches in this ongoing Asia Cup 2023, three ODIs against Australia and the Cricket World Cup to follow, he has ample opportunity to go past Gayle and become the player with the most sixes in the 50-over format.

“I want to break Chris Gayle’s six-hitting record. Never in my life, I would have imagined that I will break the Chris Gayle’s record. It’s funny (flex muscles),” Rohit said as quoted by the Indian Express.

Rishabh Pant is recovering from the injuries he suffered in a serious road accident last year. Sharing his thoughts on what he expects from Pant once he returns to the Indian Team, Rohit said, “I want him to continue playing like this. He has backed his game. He is not stubborn, but taking risk is his game. He always says that ‘I play according to the situation.’ He don’t go and start slogging, he read the situation well.”

While Ishan has a double century to his name in ODIs, his 82 is ranked much higher because of the occasion and context of the game. India were four down for 66 when Pandya and Kishan joined each other and recused India from the embarrassing position.

India were four down for 66 when Pandya and Kishan joined each other and recused India from the embarrassing position.
England’s white-ball captain, Jos Buttler, is one of the modern-day’s most destructive batters. Having won two World Cups (one ODI, one T20) in three years, Buttler is referred to as a top player in world cricket. He completed his half-century with a six. After day 4 play, the Indian wicket-keeper thanked fellow cricketer Rishabh Pant for some batting tips. If reports are to be believed, Ishan also played the innings with Pant’s bat.

IND vs WI: Why Ishan Kishan thanked Rishabh Pant after maiden Test fifty

Rishabh Pant is still recovering months after being in a horrific car accident on December 30, 2022. As per the Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) recent release, the 25-year-old wicketkeeper-batter has started batting and keeping wickets in the nets in the National Cricket Academy (NCA). While he may be recovering at a rapid pace, he is likely to miss the forthcoming ODI World Cup at home, as the board will be eager to not rush his return. As per Ishant Sharma, India's veteran pacer, Pant may also miss next year's Indian Premier League (IPL).

Ishant, who is part of the commentary panel for the India-West Indies Tests, feels Pant might not play next year's IPL as well. In his absence, his franchise Delhi Capitals (DC) was led by David Warner this year and the one-time runners-up failed to reach the playoffs. They finished at the ninth spot with five wins from 14 encounters.

'Not easy for a wicketkeeper and batter'

"I feel we might not see Rishabh Pant in the next IPL as well because it is not a small injury. It was a very serious accident. He has just started batting and wicketkeeping and to run and turn after that, there are a lot of things, which is not easy for a wicketkeeper and a batter," Ishant told Jio Cinema.

Ishant, who has represented India in 105 Tests, added, "The good thing is that he didn't have a second surgery. If he had undergone a second surgery, he would have been out for even longer. He has had one surgery now but I don't think he will be fit for the World Cup for sure. Hopefully, if he gets fit for the IPL, it will be great."

Apart from Pant, India have several injury concerns at the moment. The likes of Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer and Prasidh Krishna are also in recovery mode from their respective injuries ahead of the Asia Cup 2023 and ODI World Cup at home, to be held in October-November this year.

Pant's ardent fans will hope for his quick return but the Indian team will like to take it slowly with him, post his horrific car crash. The star player remains India's preferred keeper-batter across formats and his return is keenly awaited. Talking about his IPL franchise, the DC unit will hope for him to return in IPL 2024 as his absence was severely felt by them in this year's edition.

'Might not see Rishabh Pant in IPL 2024' - India pacer on star player recovering after horrific car crash

The BCCI's latest statement on injury updates of several star players, including Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant and Prasidh Krishna, did lift the morale of fans on Friday, and as per latest reports, a board member privy to the information has revealed the tentative date around which Rishabh Pant's anticipated return to international cricket could happen.

The release stated while both seamers (Bumrah and Prasidh) have almost regained full fitness and are raring to go, Pant is also recovering at a significant pace, with the keeper-batter said to have resumed batting and keeping but under medical guidance.

While the board and the team management aren't looking at Pant at least until the home World Cup later this year, as per a report in the Times of India, the left-handed batter might recover earliest by the home England series next year, scheduled for January-February window.

Following the 2023 World Cup (from October 5 to November 19), India will travel to South Africa for a bilateral tour, and upon returning, will host England for a five-match Test series.

“He (Pant) is currently following a fitness programme designed for him which includes strength, flexibility and running,” BCCI said in its statement.

“Perhaps, a realistic target for Pant would be the five-Test home series against England in January-February next year,” a source said, as quoted by TOI.

SKY likely to lead India in Ireland T20Is

With BCCI's new selection committee set to rest star players, including regular captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja, and Mohammed Shami among the few, for the three-match Ireland T20Is, latest reports also suggested the stand-in T20I captain Hardik Pandya and opener Shubman Gill will also be rested.

Given India's tight cricket calendar, the BCCI wants to manage the workload of first-team players for the World Cup.

Although no official comments on the same are issued, top T20I batter Suryakumar Yadav could captain the new-look T20I team in Hardik's absence for Ireland series, which starts on August 18, five days after the end of the 5th T20I against West Indies in Florida, said the report.

Besides, star seamer Jasprit Bumrah is likely to return to competitive cricket for the first time since September last year. With him nearing full fitness, the team management needs to utilise him carefully, considering India will travel to Sri Lanka for the Asia Cup and then have Australia coming home for a short ODI series before the World Cup.
