Rishabh Pant realises Bangladesh threat, says ‘cannot afford to underestimate any team'

Former Australia opener Matthew Hayden has refreshed the memories of the 2021 Test win for India in Brisbane as the two nations will once again lock horns later in the year. India, who beat Australia for the first time in 40 years at the Gabba, saw Rishabh Pant play a match-winning knock as Ajinkya Rahane’s side won the series 2-1. The match that went down in the folklore of Indian cricketing history was recalled by Hayden during the CEAT Cricket Awards on Thursday.

Matthew Hayden recalls Rishabh Pant moment

"Guys like Rishabh Pant have got a muscle memory and the thirst for victory. He was such a key player last time he played there and the Australian public loved him as well, because of the nature of the way he played his game," Hayden said while speaking at the CEAT Cricket Awards on Thursday.

Playing at the Gabba, India needed 328 runs to win in the final innings of the final Test match of the series. With the series 1-1 and Australia having not lost at the Gabba for four decades against any opponent, Rishabh Pant was the architect of the win. He scored an unbeaten 89 and helped India to back-to-back series wins Down Under. According to Hayden, Rishabh’s innings was one of the best, which even the home supporters adored.

Delhi Premier League 2024: Teams, Fixtures, Venue- All you need to know

Newly-appointed Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir is chasing a few unanswered questions as the Men in Blue prepare for the road to the Champions Trophy with the three-match ODIs against Sri Lanka starting August 2 in Colombo. The return of Captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli boosts the team’s morale, as newcomers like Riyan Parag and Harshit Rana eye debuts.

However, amidst returns and debuts, everyone seeks answers to who stands tall between KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant as the keeper-batter in ODIs, where does Shreyas Iyer fit in the middle order, will Hardik Pandya return to the scheme of things in the One-Day format and who is India’s third-choice seamer?

The Big Question – KL Rahul or Rishabh Pant?

With Rohit, Shubman Gill and Kohli likely to be India’s top three at the Champions Trophy 2025, the question arises - who plays in the middle order? Will KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant both play? And if that happens, where does Shreyas Iyer come into the picture?

ALSO READ: MS Dhoni waiting for revised ‘retention policies’ to decide on IPL future

KL Rahul’s return to the squad for the Sri Lanka ODIs ring warning bells for Pant, who recently won the T20 World Cup in the Americas. Although he started ahead of Sanju Samson in the 20-team tournament, Pant could have to wait for his turn in the ODIs since the selectors picked KL Rahul as an incumbent keeper-batter for the three matches.

A match-winner in the middle order and more than a tidy keeper, with his exploits in the 2023 World Cup and away South Africa ODIs enough for evidence, KL is ahead in the pecking order to keep wickets in the SL One-Dayers.

In that scenario, Pant sits out, and Shreyas Iyer makes his much-awaited return to the Indian Team since his fallout with BCCI late last year.
Now, since he’s absent, the newer management will look to try Riyan Parag in his place.

Although he started ahead of Sanju Samson in the 20-team tournament, Pant could have to wait for his turn in the ODIs since the selectors picked KL Rahul as an incumbent keeper-batter for the three matches. Gautam Gambhir chases few unanswered questions as India begin quest for Champions Trophy 2025 with SL ODIs

Former Australia great and Delhi Capitals coach in the IPL, Ricky Ponting, reflected on his time coaching in the cash-rich league. Ponting, who parted ways with Delhi after six years with the franchise, hints at returning to the leadership role with another team in times to come. A close ally of India keeper-batter Rishabh Pant, Ponting admits how he once felt Pant could never play cricket again following his horrific road accident.

Pant suffered multiple fractures and countless injuries in a road accident on New Year's Eve in 2022, ruling him out of competitive cricket for more than a year. Such was his state following the car crash that he had to be pulled out of the vehicle before it caught fire. Per the onlookers, Pant almost lost his life.

Speaking on the same lines, Ponting, who was at DC then, said looking at Pant’s condition, he didn’t believe the India star could pick up a bat again. However, he admits feeling very emotional about watching Pant standing on his feet and returning to the cricket field.

Just ahead of the IPL 2024, the NCA cleared Pant to partake in the 17th edition, although DC Director of Cricket, Sourav Ganguly, said Pant would play as a batter and not keep wickets.

The swashbuckling batter returned in style, scoring over 400 runs for the team and doing relatively okay behind the stumps. Though Pant failed to lead his team to the playoffs, he won his maiden ICC title with India – the T20 World Cup in the Americas last month.

In an exclusive chat with Cricbuzz, Ponting talked about Pant, saying,

“I mean what Rishabh's been through last year is one that's probably the most emotional, with how close I was with him and what he went through and the fear of all of us that he might not play cricket again. Seeing him back and doing what he's doing and leading DC, I think it's a pretty emotional time for everyone,” Ponting said.

Time to return to IPL

Shortly after Ponting and Delhi mutually decide to part ways, Ponting is on record saying he does not rule out a potential return to the league, but with some other franchise this time.

Considering IPL’s mega auction is a hot topic nowadays and several franchises seeking coaches and mentors, Ponting is not far from bagging a deal elsewhere.

“So it is what it is, we've decided to part ways, and we decided to move on, but that doesn't mean that I won't be coaching again. I'm very keen to get back involved in the IPL. There might be a few opportunities coming up and we'll see what happens over the next few weeks,” Ponting noted.

He, however, feels grateful for his time at Delhi for the past six seasons, where he failed to lead the team to an IPL trophy even once.

“I had a great time there. DC, for me, was like my second home, and my family was there with me for a month or five weeks in the last three or four years. It hasn't always been the most successful franchise. So, we tried to build a real family-inclusive environment where everyone was treated the same, and everyone was on the same page,” Ponting added.

IPL: Ricky Ponting reflects on his time at Delhi Capitals, hints at returning as coach for another franchise

Delhi Capitals captain and ace keeper-batter Rishabh Pant could join MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings in a trade deal ahead of IPL 2025, per the latest reports. The most capped Delhi player, Pant, could switch bases for the first time since his league debut, as franchise owners are undecided on his retention. Meanwhile, Lucknow Super Giant captain (LSG) KL Rahul might leave the team and rejoin Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) ahead of the upcoming season.

Pant returned to on-field cricket last year for the first time since suffering multiple injuries in a horrific road accident on New Year’s Eve in 2022. After NCA cleared him to take the field, Pant returned to captain Delhi Capitals last year. Following a shallow start to the 17th edition, Pant was among the runs, finishing the tournament with 446 runs in 13 innings, averaging 40.55.

However, despite his valiant efforts as a captain and batter, he failed to guide his team to a playoff finish, as they ended up sixth on the points table, with seven wins and as many losses.

With head coach Ricky Ponting also departing and considering the mega auction will take place ahead of the next season, DC’s decision-makers are contemplating removing Pant from the captaincy and trading with a player at CSK.

And being unclear about MS Dhoni’s participation in the next edition, Pant’s trade to the franchise could be a win-win situation for both the team and the batter.

But, per a report in Dainik Jagran, Delhi Capitals Director of Cricket Sourav Ganguly wishes to stick with Pant as a marquee player in the side going forward.

Rahul to lead RCB

KL Rahul has been the mainstay for LSG since the side’s debut in 2022. But after what unfolded last year following the game against SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH), when owner Sanjeev Goenka publicly lashed out at his team’s captain, the relationship between the two turned sour.

Although Goenka did invite Rahul over dinner at his place to mend things, it seemed to have gone too far by then.

Considering the new season is approaching, Rahul is reportedly returning to RCB and replacing Faf du Plessis as the side’s new captain. With Faf unlikely to get retained or picked at the auction table, given his age, he remains fittest among many. Rahul’s appointment as the new captain could help the owners build a team around him, aiming for the long-eluded IPL trophy.

T20 World Cup 2024, IND vs AUS: WATCH | Rohit FURIOUS after Rishabh Pant's lazy effort for a catch

India is on a winning run in this ongoing showpiece event in the Americas, much like how they were last year during the 50-over World Cup at home. And although they had a separate yet settled opening pair playing through all patches, they still made little tweaks to stay ahead of everyone. Likewise, at the 2024 T20 World Cup, they must consider changing the winning XI to ensure a smooth and attacking batting line-up with the tournament entering its business end.

Where does the problem lie?

Having the opening pair of Captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli looks best for a fantasy app, but the idea doesn’t seem to work anywhere close to what the coach and management thought it would.

Though Virat’s T20I numbers are exceptional, he has failed to put value on his wicket in four outings thus far in the tournament. With three single-digit scores, including a zero against the USA, Kohli hasn’t looked in his element this time. India is on a winning run in this ongoing showpiece event in the Americas, much like how they were last year during the 50-over World Cup at home. And although they had a separate yet settled opening pair playing through all patches, they still made little tweaks to stay ahead of everyone.

That puts pressure on already out-of-touch and ageing Rohit Sharma to score upfront, which he clearly hasn't done. Should India consider changing winning XI to solve top-order woes at T20 WC? Probably yes!

Former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh lauded India's unbeaten run in the group stage of the ongoing T20 World Cup, being held in West Indies and the USA. Ahead of the Super 8s, where India play Afghanistan in Barbados on Thursday (June 20), Harbhajan opined that there are a lot of positives for India after the end of the group stage and also tried to reason out why Sanju Samson hasn't been given a chance so far. Samson was being preferred over Rishabh Pant in the playing XI by many former cricketers before the T20 WC due to his IPL 2024 heroics. While Pant also had a good run in this year's IPL, many pitted Samson over Pant due to his effortless striking.

However, Bhajji explained why Samson has not been preferred in the India XI. Harbhajan began by lauding Hardik Pandya's bowling effort as the all-rounder has claimed seven scalps in three games (most by an Indian so far). "The biggest positive is that Hardik Pandya took the wicket. He was the fourth bowler in this tournament. But if you look at his wicket tally, he has done much better than what was expected of him," the veteran told Star Sports.

He then shifted his focus on Samson's ouster and added, "Along with him, Rishabh Pant played at number 3. His role was completely changed. Before this World Cup, we were saying that Sanju Samson will play in the team because he has made big runs. To make Rishabh Pant play at number three is a big positive. Left-Right combination is formed when Rishabh Pant plays at number three."

T20 WC: Rishabh Pant at No. 3 led to Sanju Samson's ouster from India's playing XI, opines Harbhajan

Former India coach Ravi Shastri recalled reacting to Rishabh Pant’s horrific road accident news in December 2022, saying he had tears in his eyes when hearing about it for the first time. Pant suffered multiple injuries in a road accident on New Year’s Eve two years ago when his car crashed into the roadside dividers on the Delhi-Dehradun highway. The crash's impact was so much that the car rolled over two or three times before catching fire. Luckily, the onlookers could break the car’s glass and pull Pant out before it was too late.

Attending the team’s dressing-room-talk-session after India’s close win over Pakistan in New York, Shastri gave the best fielding award to Pant for his handy contributions, including picking three catches and scoring a gritty 42.

While praising Pant for his match-winning performance against the arch-rivals, Shastri rolled back the clock, recalling his first reaction to Pant’s accident news that shook the cricket world.

When the fielding coach, T Dilip, introduced Shastri to the dressing to present this award, Ravi pointed towards Pant and said, “I had tears in my eyes when I read about his accident.”

‘I had tears in my eyes’ – Ravi Shastri recalls reacting to Rishabh Pant’s 'horrific road accident'

Rishabh Pant is all set to make his mark for Team India in the T20 World Cup as he takes guard against Pakistan on Sunday (June 9). Playing in his first international tournament after a near-fatal car accident in December 2022, Pant will be eager to make his presence felt. However, the Indian batter opened up on how badly he missed the ODI World Cup final having been injured. He also suggested that the match result would have been different had he been on the field during the World Cup which India lost to Australia in November in Ahmedabad.

"If I had played the 2023 Cricket World Cup Final then, we would have either been all out for 150 or 200 runs or would have scored over 300+ runs," Pant said while speaking to India TV’s Rajat Sharma.

Since his accident in December 2022, Pant only returned to action during the Indian Premier League (IPL 2024) season. He played the entire IPL season with Delhi Capitals where the side could not clinch a place in the Playoffs. However, the southpaw showed his fitness level and was picked for the Indian team for the T20 World Cup, marking his return to the side after 18 months of staying away from the game.

India keeper-batter Rishabh Pant enjoyed his new role, batting at number three during the India vs Ireland tie in the 2024 T20 World Cup in New York. The left-handed batter scored an unbeaten 36 off 26 balls, hitting two biggies and three fours; however, the highlight was his match-winning reverse-sweeping six off Barry McCarthy to help India complete a run chase with eight wickets remaining.

Veteran India spinner Harbhajan Singh is reportedly keen on applying for Team India’s head coach position. Harbhajan is the second high-profile Indian player after Gautam Gambhir, willing to replace Rahul Dravid for the top job. Rahul’s tenure ends with the conclusion of the upcoming T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and the USA. Besides, Harbhajan also picked Sanju Samson over Rishabh Pant in the starting XI for the marquee event.

On the day when media reports of BCCI seeking MS Dhoni’s assistance in convincing Stephen Fleming to apply for the soon-to-be-vacant post started doing rounds on the internet, Harbhajan’s interest in replacing Dravid has made this scenario exciting.

As reported by the Times of India (TOI), Harbhajan revealed he hasn’t applied yet, but if an opportunity comes by, he will grab it with both hands. Bhajji continued by saying that what cricket offered him and helped him become who he is today, he’d like to give back to the game.

"I do not know if I would apply. Coaching India is about man management, not about teaching players how to drive and pull. They know it very well. You can give some guidance to them. Cricket has given me so much, and if I get a chance to give it back, I would be more than happy,” Harbhajan said as quoted by TOI.

Meanwhile, Dravid had denied reapplying for the head coach position despite BCCI secretary Jay Shah confirming that the doors for him are always open. The newly-appointed head coach will take over the job from July 1 and his tenure will run for three and a half years.

Sanju over Pant for Harbhajan

Following a stunning season with the bat in hand and behind the wickets, Sanju Samson earned a call-up to the final 15 for the 20-team tournament starting June 2.

Although Rishabh Pant was picked as the first-choice keeper, Harbhajan feels with both among the runs in IPL 2024, Sanju should be preferred to start ahead of Pant.

"Rishabh Pant played well in the IPL. He has come out of his injuries. He looked fit, batted well and did some nice wicketkeeping. But Sanju played really well. I would like to see him get a chance. He has been performing consistently."

"He has been scoring 60s and 70s and is not the old Sanju anymore who would score just 30s and 40s. But there has been no hurry in bringing Pant back, he worked really hard. I hope he does something special for India," Harbhajan said.

Harbhajan Singh keen on becoming India’s head coach; picks Samson over Pant for T20 World Cup

Delhi Capitals (DC) hosted Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in match 64 of the IPL 2024 edition on Tuesday (May 14), at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi. Opting to bowl first, KL Rahul-led LSG invited Rishabh Pant's DC to bat first. Pant & Co. rode on Abhishek Porel's 58, Shai Hope's 38 (27), skipper's 23-ball 33 and Tristan Stubbs' 25-ball 57* to post 208 for 4.

In reply, LSG only managed 189 for 9 courtesy of Nicholas Pooran's entertaining 27-ball 61 and Arshad Khan's fighting 58 (33). With this defeat, LSG are very much out of contention in the playoffs race whereas DC remain alive but with a very slim chance mathematically. After the loss, Mohammed Kaif lashed out at Lucknow for their poor tactics, inviting DC to bat first at the venue.

Kaif told on Star Sports, "Take the video analyst's computer and throw it away. They didn't go with any numbers. 200 has not been chased here at all. I am telling you this year's numbers. In all four matches, the team batting first has won. You won the toss and said you would field first."

In IPL history, DC have never lost while defending anything over 200. Meanwhile, no team has managed to chase down any total in excess of 200 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in this year's IPL. Hence, LSG team management certainly made a big mistake, pushing them closer to an early exit.

At present, DC are at the fifth spot with 14 points in their league games. Meanwhile, LSG are two spots below DC, with 12 points and a game in hand.

Meanwhile, LSG are two spots below DC, with 12 points and a game in hand.

Delhi Capitals (DC) director of cricket Sourav Ganguly has labelled Rishabh Pant as an 'instinctive captain' after DC ended their league games with a 19-run win over Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in match 64 of IPL 2024 on Tuesday (May 14). Under Pant, DC ended their league games with 7 wins and equal number of losses. They have a very slim chance, mathematically, of qualifying for the playoffs.

Reflecting on Pant's captaincy -- who has impressed at times but also made mistakes from time to time this season -- Ganguly told Jio Cinema, "Pant is a young captain, he'll learn with time. The way he returned from injury to play a full season; we had our doubts during the off-season."

"Indian players are crucial, especially since the TATA IPL shifted to 10 teams. I am very happy for him that he returned to play so well over a full season. He has all my well-wishes for whatever is next," Ganguly opined.

He further opined, "With time, he'll become a better captain. Nobody is a great captain from day one, but he is an instinctual captain, he makes decisions on the ground. With more time, he'll get better."

Pant returned to competitive cricket after 1.5 years during this IPL season. In 14 games, he ended with 446 runs -- ninth-most -- at a strike-rate of 155.40 along with three fifties. As a result, he got selected in India's T20 World Cup 2024 squad.

DC had a topsy-turvy ride in the league stage but saw plenty of new match-winners emerge such as Jack Fraser-McGurk, Abhishek Porel, Rasikh Dar Salam, Triston Stubbs, Mukesh Kumar, etc.

This wicket is great, and the ground isn't that big, so I think for any bowler, it isn't easy to bowl here. Rasikh has improved a lot. Mukesh has been our best bowler this season. He bowls all the difficult overs, whether at the start or at the death. There has been no match this season where we didn't need his bowling in the death. "

He added, "We knew that conceding sixes would lead to more losses, so he has consistently delivered there. Our Indian bowlers have been great this season."

‘Rishabh Pant is an instinctive captain’: Sourav Ganguly backs DC star to get better with time

Team India will kick off their campaign at T20 World Cup 2024, to be held in the West Indies and USA in June, with their tournament opener on June 5 versus Ireland. Ahead of the match, former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir opined on who should be India's wicketkeeper in the playing XI. With two in-form keeper-batters such as Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson in the squad, Gambhir backed Pant to feature ahead of Samson.

Gambhir -- the 2007 T20 WC winner -- told Sportskeeda, "I think only one of them will be in the starting side and whoever it is, India must back him ... both have equal quality. It's touch and go but I'd start with Rishabh because he's a left-hander and a natural middle-order batsman. Sanju in the IPL has batted at number three, but India's top-order is fixed."

Further, the current Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) mentor stated, "Rishabh has batted at number five, six and seven. India need a wicketkeeper in that position as compared to a top-three batsman. A left-hander in the middle-order gives you that left-hand-right-hand combination."

"If India see that Sanju can score more runs at number six or seven, they could go with him as well," Gambhir added.

Both Samson and Pant have had a good run in the ongoing IPL 2024 edition, where they are leading the Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Delhi Capitals (DC), respectively. Meanwhile, the Delhi captain has 446 runs -- ninth-most -- striking at 155.40 with three half-centuries.

Thus, there isn't much to separate between the two. For India, Samson has a better strike rate than Pant in T20Is (133.09 when compared to his competitor's 126.37). However, the latter has played 66 T20Is as opposed to Samson's 25.

Delhi Capitals captain Rishabh Pant has been fined INR 30 lakh and suspended for one game for maintaining the slow over-rate against Rajasthan Royals in their match at home in IPL 2024. Pant’s DC was 10 minutes behind time at the start of the final over during the RR game, which they won by 20 runs. While Pant faces hefty punishment, the remaining DC players - including the impact substitute – are fined INR 12 Lakh or 50% of their match fee, whichever is lesser.

As it was Delhi’s third offence this season, the punishment’s magnitude is so high.

Meanwhile, the Delhi-based outfit filed an appeal against this ruling, which was referred to the BCCI Ombudsman for review. Upon looking at it briefly, the Ombudsman conducted a virtual hearing and stated that the match referee’s decision was final and binding.

This, however, will not help Delhi’s cause of pushing for a playoff spot this season. Following a shallow start to the season, Delhi picked up the pace and kept winning since. Although they have six wins and as many losses in 12 contested matches thus far, same as that of CSK and LSG, DC is alive and running in the race for a top-four finish.

Meanwhile, returning to competitive cricket for the first time since suffering severe injuries in a road accident on December 30, 2022, Pant managed to find form, scoring 413 runs thus far from 12 outings.
A resurgent Delhi Capitals (DC) will be facing second-placed Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 on April 29 at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. DC have bounced back emphatically in the season, winning four of their last five games after losing four from their first five games.

KKR, after starting out the season with three wins on the trot, are having a see-saw moment with three losses and two wins in the last five games. Nonetheless, KKR have played two games less than DC and have same points - giving them a relatively pressure-free situation to play under.

Both the teams are reliant on their batting to win the games as evident by their last few outings. While KKR have gone past 220 in each of their last three innings, DC have done it twice with one being a 199-run score.

The openers from each side, Sunil Narine for KKR and Jake Fraser-McGurk for DC, have been in scintillating form this season. Narine, primarily a bowling all-rounder, has scored 357 runs in eight innings so far, while Fraser-McGurk, playing his first IPL, has smashed 247 runs in five innings at a strike rate of 237.50.

With their batting being almost equal in terms of hitting power, it'll probably come down to the bowlers and how well they can handle the pressure. The venue, Eden Gardens, has seen 200+ scores in eight of the last 10 innings and the batters have been extra brutal with scoring this season.

While KKR have a good mix of domestic and foreign bowlers, DC have Kuldeep Yadav and Khaleel Ahmed who have a better past record against current KKR top order. However, in their last meeting in the IPL 2024, KKR had tore apart DC for 272/7 in 20 overs - third highest score in history of the league.

DC, who are playing their second match in three days, will be hoping to ride on the momentum to keep the playoff hopes alive.

KKR, after starting out the season with three wins on the trot, are having a see-saw moment with three losses and two wins in the last five games. Nonetheless, KKR have played two games less than DC and have same points - giving them a relatively pressure-free situation to play under. Also Read: Lahore, Rawalpindi among three venues PCB proposes for 2025 Champions Trophy at home Both the teams are reliant on their batting to win the games as evident by their last few outings.

The Indian men’s team selection panel led by Ajit Agarkar will have a tough decision in hand to choose the team for the upcoming T20 World Cup in the USA and the West Indies. Ahead of the team selection, one of the reports has suggested that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is considering dropping Hardik Pandya from the Indian squad and instead naming Rishabh Pant as the vice-captain. India will try to end their 17-year wait for the T20 World Cup victory this year as Rohit Sharma and Co. aim to end their 11-year wait for an ICC trophy.

With the IPL 2024 entering the second half, Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians – two star-studded teams will face off in their second leg this season at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Saturday (April 27). Although both teams sit at the bottom half of the points table, hosts Delhi are placed slightly better with eight points from nine contested matches. The travelling MI team is ninth on the sheet with just three wins from eight games. Here is the match preview and result prediction of the DC vs MI game in IPL 2024.

Match Preview

Delhi will take a lot of confidence from the win in their last league game against Gujarat Titans at home. Jake Fraser’s inclusion has boosted their batting line-up, with India’s Abishek Porel delivering with the bat at the top. Although David Warner's form is a worry for the home side, trust in Captain Rishabh Pant and finisher Tristan Stubbs to do their jobs well against the touring MI side is reaping rewards.

However, the bowling department continues to hold the key for Delhi, with Khaleel Ahmed and Kuldeep Yadav leading the wickets tally. While Mukesh Kumar’s presence in the pace attack makes it look stronger, Rasikh Salam’s emergence, mainly after his exploits in the last game against GT, will act as a bonus for the hosts.

Above all, Axar Patel’s performance with both bat and ball keeps Delhi in the contention for the playoffs.

Meanwhile, the travelling Mumbai Indians are struggling to find momentum this season. Although their batting is somewhat sorted, with the top and middle order clicking even in crisis, questions around Captain Hardik Pandya’s form, both as a player and cricketer, continue to make headlines.

However, the Jasprit Bumrah-led bowling attack has lagged in IPL 2024 despite the ace India seamer in top-notch form this season with the new and the old ball. Though his partner Gerald Coetzee has impressed everyone, in bits and pieces, the onus would fall on how the spin attack fares in Delhi.

Head-to-Head

Mumbai Indians lead Delhi Capitals 19-15 in head-to-head tally in IPL.

Result Prediction

IPL 2024, Match 43, Delhi Capitals vs Mumbai Indians – Match preview and result prediction

Rishabh Pant-starrer Delhi Capitals (DC) edged past Gujarat Titans (GT) by four runs in a high-scoring thriller in match 40 of IPL 2024 on Wednesday (April 24). Playing at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi, GT opted to bowl first and conceded 224/4 thanks to DC captain Rishabh Pant scoring a splendid 43-ball 88*, along with Axar Patel's 66 (43).

In reply, GT were in the hunt courtesy of Wriddhiman Saha's 39, Sai Sudharsan's 65 and David Miller's 55 before Rashid Khan's unbeaten 21 almost led them to an improbable win. The one-time winners managed 220/8 as Pant was adjudged the Player-of-Match for his third fifty of the season (where he also smacked Mohit Sharma for 4 sixes in an over). The Delhi captain also pulled off two key dismissals behind the stumps.

Given that Pant has returned to competitive cricket after 14 months, after his horrific car crash in late 2022, the DC star player has been among runs and is now a strong contender for a berth in the T20 World Cup, to be held in West Indies and USA in June.

Pant has 342 runs in nine games, third-most overall in the list of most runs in IPL 2024, and is leading the race for the wicketkeeper-batter's slot. After his knock, the southpaw reflected on being on the field post a lengthy gap.

'The first six in the match gives me confidence in a game'

At the post-match presentations, Pant said, "Surely at 43/3, we wanted to just keep going and target their main spinners. If we get something, we will take it on and keep rotating the strike. Every day that I'm in the middle, I feel better. Every hour on the field matters, I love being on the field. I try to give it my 100% and it takes some time sometimes. I think the first six in the match gives me the confidence in a game. The more time I spend in the centre, the better I feel."

DC have now moved to the sixth spot with a narrow win over GT, completing a double over them as well in the ongoing edition. They will next host the Mumbai Indians (MI) on Saturday (April 27) at the same venue and would hope to add two more points to their kitty.

Home side Delhi Capitals beat Gujarat Titans by four runs in a thriller that went to the wire. For the hosts, Captain Rishabh Pant and all-rounder Axar Patel starred with the bat, while Kuldeep Yadav remained their go-to-bowler in the high-scoring clash in IPL 2024. For the touring side Gujarat, Sai Sudharsan and David Miller scored fifties, and Rashid Khan played a brilliant cameo, but all went in vain.

Delhi batted first against Gujarat, with two pocket-dynamites – Prithvi Shaw and Jake Fraser-McGurk, taking the attack to the opposition from ball one. Gujarat’s Sandeep Warrier was on top of the hosts, removing both openers and Shai Hope inside the Powerplay to put their backs against the wall.

That, however, couldn’t stop Delhi from launching and finishing with a massive total on the board.

An unlikely pair of Axar and Pant got the home side on track and kept increasing the scoring–rate with each passing over. While Axar slammed his first fifty of the season, scoring a gritty 66 off 43 balls, including four sixes and five fours, Captain Pant remained unbeaten 88 off 43 balls.

His last-over exploits against Mohit Sharma saw the GT seamer concede the most runs for a bowler in an IPL inning (0/73).

𝙋𝘼𝙉𝙏𝙖𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙘! Heartbreak for GT Captain Shubman Gill departed early on six, but Sai and Wriddhiman Saha stitched an 82-run stand for the second wicket to keep Gujarat afloat in the chase. Following two quick wickets, GT tried finding momentum but later lost Sai on 65 off 39 balls, with their scorecard reeling at 121 for four inside 13 overs. IPL 2024: Heartbreak for Gujarat as Delhi clinch thriller at home by 4 runs

Delhi Capitals Head Coach Ricky Ponting believes Rishabh Pant's inclusion in India's T20 World Cup squad is a 'no-brainer'. Ponting told WION Sports Correspondent Nikhil Mathur that the Capitals need to win five out of their next six games to make the IPL Playoffs.

Ricky Ponting backs Rishabh Pant to make India's T20 WC squad

It will be an interesting next few days for Delhi Capitals skipper Rishabh Pant as he contemplates his international return ahead of the T20 World Cup in the USA and the West Indies in June. Former Australia captain and Delhi Capitals’ coach Ricky Ponting has backed Pant to make the India squad for the T20 World Cup. Speaking exclusively to WION, Ponting backed Pant ahead of Sanju Samson and Dinesh Karthik, who have been in great form for their Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises.

Ponting backs Pant’s selection for World Cup

“No doubt that Pant should make India T20 World Cup squad. Great to see him back and he is playing well. He is too dynamic of a player to not make the India squad,” Ponting said in an exclusive chat with WION’s Nikhil Mathur on Monday.

Pant has so far endured a mixed return to the IPL after being injured in a near-fatal car accident in December 2022. He returned to the IPL with DC this season and has so far scored 254 runs in eight matches at the IPL. He now faces tough competition to be back in the Indian team as multiple players fight for a place.

KL Rahul and Sanju Samson are in the pole position to make the T20 World Cup squad, while Ishan Kishan (despite contract issues) and Dinesh Karthik are also in the fray to make the Indian team for the T20 World Cup.

Ponting also spoke on the team’s chances of reaching the playoffs of the IPL 2024, conceding they will have to win every game remaining. DC have so far won three matches and lost five, which sees them languish at the 8th spot in the IPL 2024 standings.

“Every game is a must-win from now on. Our best is good enough but we haven't been good across the 40 overs. We were a bit jinxed at the beginning of the season.
DC are next in action on Wednesday (April 24) when they take on Gujarat Titans (GT) in their second clash at traditional home Arun Jaitley Stadium. Exclusive: He should make India T20 WC squad - Ricky Ponting backs Rishabh Pant for international return

Delhi Capitals’ Sourav Ganguly and Ricky Ponting feel keeper-batter Rishabh Pant should play the 2024 T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and the USA. The attacking left-handed batter returned to competitive cricket for the first time in IPL 2024 since December 2022, when he suffered multiple injuries in a horrific road accident.

While Pant hasn’t looked in his element upon his comeback to the cricket field, and understandably so, DC’s top management feels he still has it in him to deliver for India in the 20-team tournament starting on June 1. Speaking to PTI in New Delhi on Monday (April 22), Ganguly said Pant should be included in India’s 15-man squad and play in the middle order.

"Yes, I think so, Pant should be part of the World Cup squad," Ganguly said in New Delhi on Monday.

"He should bat in the middle order. Where exactly is difficult to say because of match-ups and right-left combinations depending on who bowls. It also depends on the situation,” the former India captain added.

On the other hand, DC’s head coach Ponting feels Pant was a bit apprehensive at the beginning of this season but has felt confident about his keeping and batting since.

Punter also commented on Pant’s confidence, saying the India star trusts his abilities and that he’s too good a player to get dropped from the T20 World Cup squad.

"He's starting to get a bit more trust and belief in his body as well," Ponting said.

"I think early on, he had been a little bit apprehensive as to what he could do, especially with the wicketkeeping side of it. With his batting, coming into the tournament, he had pretty good trust in his abilities."

"I think his batting is getting better and better by the game. I've been asked a lot already over the last couple of weeks, now that he's back and playing, what I think about his World Cup chances. I think he'll be in the squad for sure. I think he's too good of a player and can have too much of an impact on the game,” Ponting continued.

Pant ahead of DK, Sanju in the pecking order

Although the Indian selectors are yet to sit with Captain Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid to pick the 2024 T20 WC squad, the latest reports have emerged that Pant is leading the race to be the first-choice keeper, with KL Rahul and Sanju Samson being considered the backup options.

Delhi Capitals (DC) skipper Rishabh Pant said that he expected the dew to play a role in second innings against SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) during their Indian Premier League (IPL) match on April 20. DC had won the toss and elected to bowl first against SRH which went against them as they conceded 266 runs in 20 overs.

"The only thought process behind [electing to bowl at the toss] was we thought there will be a bit of dew, which did not come," Pant said at the post-match presentation.

"If we could have restricted them to 220-230 we still had a chance. (The ball) stopped more (on the pitch) in the second innings than what we anticipated. But when you have 260-270 to defend, it gives bowlers confidence," he added.

"I think powerplay was one of the differences. They got 120-130 runs in the powerplay and we were catching up throughout the match," he acknowledged.

Head reached his fifty of just 16 balls - joint fastest for SRH along with Abhishek Sharma who achieved the feat few days back.

By the time powerplay was done, SRH had posted highest powerplay score ever with Head batting on 84 off just 26 balls and Abhishek on 40. Hyderabad had also hit 13 fours and 11 sixes in the first 36 balls which translate to four balls going either for a four or a six every over.

In reply, DC had a good powerplay too, scoring 88 runs but eventually were bowled out for 199, losing the match by 67 runs.
