Opting to bowl, KL Rahul &amp; Co. were in for the leather hunt courtesy of Virat Kohli's 61 (44), Faf du Plessis' 79* off 46 and Glenn Maxwell's 29-ball 59 as RCB posted a mammoth 212 for 2. In reply, LSG rode on fifties from Marcus Stoinis 65 (30) and Nicholas Pooran's 62 (19) to take their side home in a thrilling clash at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru.

The clash saw a 115-metre six, fifties from all the big hitters, a last-over finish, a hit-wicket, failed attempt at running the non-striker out for backing too far. There was sheer chaos at the iconic ground, in front of a jam-packed stadium, with emotions flying high among players and fans. As Lucknow Super Giants tail-enders looked for the final run on the last ball of the match against RCB, Bangalore bowler Harshal Patel desperately tried to knock non-strike batsman out via MANKAD.

LSG's last batsman Avesh Khan came to the crease on the last ball with his team requiring one run to chase down a mammoth 213. Patel started running and LSH non-strike batsman Ravi Bishnoi started backing up and the bowler tried to take Bishnoi out but missed it. Had Patel managed to take the bails off, Bishnoi would have been out by a mile.

Virat Kohli has so far scored two fifties in three games for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in IPL 2023. The three-time runners-up will rely on Kohli throughout the season as they look to end their IPL-trophy drought this time around in IPL 2023. In 2016 edition, the then RCB skipper Kohli was in sublime form as he ended with a whopping 973 runs in 16 games -- including four centuries - as he took his franchise to the final, where they lost to the eventual champions Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).

Kohli's 973 runs remains the most scored by a batter in any IPL season. Recently, former Indian head coach Ravi Shastri named India's young star Shubman Gill, who represents the one-time winners Gujarat Titans (GT), to break Kohli's massive IPL record.&nbsp;

Speaking during a Q/A session on&nbsp;Star Sports, Shastri said, "He has to be an opening batsman, because only then will he get many opportunities to score runs. I feel it is Shubman Gill because he is in good form and also because he plays at the top of the order. So he will get a good number of opportunities to score runs."

Shastri further opined, "The pitches are good, so if he can score 80-100 runs consecutively in two or three innings, then at that point only he will already have 300-400 runs.

"According to me, it is very difficult to break the record, because 900-plus runs is huge. But one thing is opening batsmen will get two extra matches and two extra innings, so they can only break this record if it is possible", he&nbsp;added.

Defending his innings at the post-match presentation, KL Rahul said, "I want to score more runs and I think I score more runs, the strike rate goes up. We have played a couple of games in tough wickets in Lucknow. Today we lost 3 wickets so I look at the situation and I felt like I did the right thing and if I could have carried on and stayed there till the end and stayed with Nicky, could've won the game a lot easier. Once I get some good knocks under my belt I'll start feeling good and that will go up."

Rahul's logic behind his inning is debatable. With LSG three down for 23 after four overs, Marcus Stoinis joined KL, 8 off 9 at that time, on the crease. The duo went on to add 76 runs in the next 6.4 overs or 40 balls. Stoinis played 30 of them and went on to score precious 65 runs in the partnership and Rahul in that time reached to 18 off 19 balls - thus scoring 10 off 10.

While one may agree that there was no need to be aggressive with Stoinis on the charge, Rahul's 10 off 10 were clearly out of context regarding the game situation and it may have put undue pressure on Stoinis, resulting in him taking extra risk, eventually leading to a wicket for RCB.

Also, even as Stoinis departed, Pooran came and smoked his second ball to a six, showing how easy the Chinnaswamy wicket was. In the next over, Rahul got out on the first ball, trying to flick Siraj.&nbsp;Rahul definitely should have taken more risks because the situation was bot that bat while Stoinis was batting to take the advantage pressure he was putting on RCB bowlers.

Thanks to Pooran, Badoni and tail-enders, LSG won the match but KL Rahul surely needs to step up his game if he doesn't want to be a weak-link in the form of a captain in a line-up which could go all the way and win the trophy in its second season only.

In came Glenn Maxwell at number three and RCB didn't let gas off the pedal as the Australian also notched up 22 off 15 by the end of 16 overs. RCB, at that time, were cruising along at 146/1. For LSG, every bowler proved expensive with Avesh Khan going for 33 in three overs and Krunal Pandya getting smacked for 29 in his four.

Bangalore currently are at seventh position on the points table with one loss and one win in two games. LSG, on the other hand, are at third place, having won two of their three games.

Not one, not two but a few Kolkata players made headlines for their performance against Royal Challengers Bangalore at Eden Gardens on Thursday night. One of them was unheard of, lesser-known 19-year-old Suyesh Sharma. Coming in as an Impact Player, Suyesh did justice to his role as he picked up three wickets on his IPL debut and won everyone’s heart, including that of KKR captain, Nitish Rana.

For someone to deliver on the stage as big as IPL without playing any first-class and list-A match before this game, calls for applause. The leggie accounted for experienced Dinesh Karthik, Anuj Rawat and Karn Sharma as he returned with figures of three for 30 in four overs. While Sunil Narine and Varun Chakaravarthy had picked the bulk of wickets early on, Suyesh, who got introduced later into the attack, further dent RCB’s chances in the chase of 205.

Speaking to the media after a thumping 81-run over RCB at home, Kolkata captain Nitish Rana revealed he knew Suyesh will be effective, but he was waiting for the right moment to bring him on.

“I knew Suyash would be effective, but at that stage of the game (in the Powerplay overs), getting rid of the top and middle order of RCB was crucial,” Rana said as quoted by the Indian Express.

Put to bat first by RCB, Rahmanullah Gurbaz helped KKR get off to a solid start, smashing Mohammed Siraj for three straight fours in the third over. Venkatesh Iyer on the other end, started slowly. However, David Willey, coming to the side as Reece Topley's replacement, made an immediate impact in the next over, castling Venkatesh's middle stump.

Willey was the pick of the bowlers for RCB, taking 2/16 in his four overs. Karn Sharma also took 2/26 in his three overs. Harshal, Bracewell and Siraj managed one wicket each.

The win sees KKR record their first points of the season and have gone level with RCB for the same points. KKR will next take on champions Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday, April 9 while RCB will take on Lucknow Super Giants at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangaluru.

IPL 2023: Shardul Thakur, Varun Chakaravarthy lead KKR to famous 81-run win against lacklustre RCB

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) have been dealt another injury blow in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) season 16 after star man Rajat Patidar’s heel injury. Patidar has been ruled out of the entire season of the IPL and will now serve time in the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bangalore where he will carry out his rehabilitation.

“Unfortunately, Rajat Patidar has been ruled out of #IPL2023 due to an Achilles Heel injury. We wish Rajat a speedy recovery and will continue to support him during the process. The coaches and management have decided not to name a replacement player for Rajat just yet,” read a statement on the RCB’s official Twitter handle.

The injury news comes at the wrong time for the RCB after having Josh Hazlewood and Will Jacks unavailable due to their time out on the treatment table. The RCB franchise is also struggling with the injury of Recce Topley, where he injured his shoulder against the Mumbai Indians. Although Topley has been involved with the squad Patidar has now been ruled out altogether.

The 29-year-old was RCB’s third-highest scorer in the 2022 season despite going unpicked at the start. Patidar came in as a replacement for injured Luvnith Sisodia and made an early impression with some top knocks. Patidar scored the fastest hundred in IPL history in the 2022 Eliminator against Lucknow Super Giants where he dazzled for the franchise.

The recently concluded Ranji Trophy season also saw Patidar make an impression as he helped them win the tournament. Ahead of his side's Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 opener against Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) head coach Sanjay Bangar said that Sri Lankan all-rounder will be available for the side only after April 9 due to his international cricket commitments.

RCB will take on MI in their IPL 2023 campaign opener on Sunday at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. "Wanindu Hasaranga will be unavailable for us till the ninth of this month," said Bangar in the pre-match press conference.

Hasaranga was the leading wicket-taker for RCB last season and was the second-highest wicket-taker overall with 26 scalps in 16 matches at an average of 16.53 and an economy rate of 7.54. His best bowling figures in the last season were 5/18.

England pacer Reece Topley will be a like-for-like replacement for Australian quick Josh Hazlewood, who will be missing out on the first half of the league due to an achilles injury, said the coach.

"We sort of anticipated it (Hazlewood missing IPL games) and it was factored in the auction and pre-auction meetings. Reece Topley provides a like-to-like replacement for him. I am sure that his left-arm bowling will add to the strength of our bowling," said Bangar.

On the status of Rajat Patidar, who is also expected to miss the first half of IPL due to a heel injury, Bangar said that the batter is undergoing treatment at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru and the franchise is awaiting clarification from him.

The coach also added that star Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell, who recently made his return to cricket in the ODI series against Australia after a leg injury sustained last year, has been cleared to play by Cricket Australia (CA) and will play on Sunday.

Bangar revealed that the franchise wanted to sign New Zealand all-rounder Michael Bracewell during the auction last year, but had to sign Will Jacks, an England all-rounder due to the auction sequence. The all-rounder is now in the team as a replacement for an injured Jacks."

"Bracewell is a versatile player. He can bat at the top and lower down the order. We will be looking to make the best use of him," added Bangar.

On playing at the home ground of M Chinnaswammy Stadium after a gap of over three years, Bangar said, "Boys are excited. The build-up was very nice. We had this RCB Unbox event and also the Hall of Fame event that the team management did. The response to these events was nice and it gave goosebumps to the new boys who have not experienced the atmosphere at the Chinnaswammy Stadium. Last year, RCB qualified for playoffs and lost to Rajasthan Royals in qualifier 2 by seven wickets.

As the commencement of the 16th edition of the Indian Premier League is just a sleep away, absence of Hazlewood, who starred for the RCB in the last season with 20 wickets, comes as a spoiler. Not only Hazlewood, RCB might also miss Glenn Maxwell for the first game against Mumbai Indians as he continues to recuperate from a leg injury.

The 32-year-old Hazlewood suffered an Achilles strain while bowling on the damp run-ups during the SCG Test against South Africa early this year. More so he got ruled out of the Border-Gavaskar series and the three-match ODI series against India. Recently, RCB announced the decision to induct de Villiers and Chris Gayle into their Hall of Fame as first two inductees and ABD wrote a heartfelt note on Instagram, reminiscing his playing days and love he got from the fans. "I don’t know where to start really.. So, March 26th 2023 Chris and I were inducted into the RCB hall of fame and our jersey numbers retired forever. My heart blossomed as my wife, two boys and little girl walked up the stairs to enter our RCB den, stairs that I have walked up so many times with butterflies fluttering in my stomach. It felt weird to walk up there in a different state of mind," wrote de Villiers. It used to be adrenalin combined with an extreme hunger to please the cry out of our fans to find a way to win, this time it was a sea of emotion that filled my body as I simply felt grateful to have had my time in the arena representing a proud city, an amazing franchise and incredible teammates," he added. "So many special memories rushed back as I thought of all my days spent in India since 2003, I have a deep connection with this country and its people. I’ll forever be grateful!. Thank you teammates, especially Virat, thank you RCB, thank you Bengaluru," concluded the batsman. Notably, de Villiers is second highest scorer for the RCB behind Virat Kohli with 4,522 runs in 157 matches.
