Jailer 2 movie review

Tiger's seemingly ordinary life takes an unexpected turn when he gets into trouble with local strongman Moorthy (Namo Narayana). What initially appears to be another instance of Tiger getting drawn into trouble gradually reveals itself to be part of a larger plan.

With Yogi Babu's Vimal also entering the picture, the first half revolves around quirky characters, local rivalries and Tiger's attempts to get closer to those behind the smuggling network.

The investigation eventually leads Tiger to Goa, where the dangerous Bodhi Kalpak (SJ Suryah) operates alongside his family. The conflict also brings Kantha Kalpak (Vidya Balan) into the picture, along with their father, played by Mithun Chakraborty.

As the criminals begin targeting Tiger's allies and family, the former jailer finds himself caught in a game of revenge, deception and shifting loyalties. Several familiar faces return to the franchise, while new appearances add to the film's scale.

What follows is a battle of strategies, with both sides attempting to outsmart each other.

What works and what doesn't

Rajinikanth is, of course, the star of the film, and director Nelson Dilipkumar knows how to make the most of the superstar's screen presence. Just like in the original Jailer, Tiger commands authority with his composed demeanour and trademark style. References to Rajinikanth's earlier films and callbacks to the first instalment also work in the sequel's favour.

The first half is the most enjoyable part of the film, filled with dark humour and eccentric characters. The interactions between Tiger, Moorthy and Yogi Babu's Vimal provide several lighter moments. Namo Narayana also makes a strong impression as Moorthy, while Yogi Babu contributes effectively to the film's comic portions.

Also Read: Rajinikanth's Jailer 2 gets U/A 16+ certificate; runtime revealed

Another strong point of Jailer 2 is its supporting cast and cameos, which bring together actors from different film industries. Suraj Venjaramoodu is an effective addition as Dileep, who sets out to investigate Varman's death.

SJ Suryah plays Bodhi Kalpak, the main antagonist whose conflict with Tiger drives much of the second half. While he adds an engaging flavour to the proceedings, the character does not always live up to what fans might expect.

Vidya Balan is another intriguing addition to the story, and her confrontations with Rajinikanth are engaging. However, her role does not fully utilise the actor's abilities.

As for the celebrity cameos, Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar and Jackie Shroff bring back familiar associations with the franchise, while Vijay Sethupathi and Hrithik Roshan are new additions.

These appearances are clearly designed to excite fans, and they succeed to some extent. However, most of the cameos do not contribute enough to the story, with Hrithik Roshan's appearance being a notable exception.

Mithun Chakraborty, meanwhile, appears as a key member of the criminal family, but his character lacks depth.

Ramya Krishnan and Mirnaa reprise their roles, but both get limited opportunities to contribute meaningfully to the film.

Also Read: Jailer 2 trailer out: Rajinikanth returns in massy avatar, Vidya Balan turns heads as Kantha | Watch

Anirudh Ravichander's background score adds energy to Tiger's entrances, confrontations and key action sequences, creating the atmosphere expected from a Rajinikanth entertainer.

The songs, however, are less successful. Although the film features two special numbers, neither leaves the same impression as the musical moments in the first instalment.

The biggest issue with Jailer 2 is the shift in storytelling after the interval. Once the conflict moves to Goa and the Kalpak family enters the picture, the film becomes increasingly dependent on confrontations and extended action sequences.

The stakes are undoubtedly higher, but the screenplay does not always make effective use of them, particularly during the climax. The repeated attempts by both sides to trap, threaten and outsmart each other eventually begin to feel familiar.

Additionally, the constant violence starts to lose its impact after a point.

Tamil superstar Rajinikanth chose not to react to a question related to the newly appointed CM of Tamil Nadu, Vijay, who took oath only two days back, on May 10. After days of uncertainty, Vijay met Tamil Nadu Governor RV Arlekar at Lok Bhavan after his party secured the majority mark to form the government. The swearing-in ceremony took place at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai on Sunday, where Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar administered the oath of office. Rajinikanth declines to comment on CM Vijay On Tuesday (May 12), Rajinikanth was spotted arriving at the Chennai airport. A video shared by news agency PTI showed Rajinikanth greeting a few reporters as he made his entry to the airport. When one of them asked him about Vijay taking oath as the new CM of Tamil Nadu, Rajinikanth offered no comment. Instead, he smiled, folded his hands and walked ahead.

India celebrated the 75th birth anniversary of Rajinikanth. Over the years, he has become more than just a cinematic icon not just for his fans in his home state, but also in India. Find out everything you need to know about the star in this episode of E-Club.

Rajinikanth over the years: Everything you need to know about the cinema icon | E-Club

If you are not a Rajinikanth fan, close this page now. Or maybe not; after reading this, you might also become a fan of the South Indian superstar. As someone who learned the Tamil language only to be able to better understand Rajinikanth films, my reasons for loving him are probably different from yours. On his 75th birthday, I am asking the same question that both friends and family asked me over three decades: Why do I love Rajinikanth?

I became a Rajinikanth fan from Thalapathi

For me, the start of watching Rajini films was not from one of the typical "Tamil padam" drivel that milked his stardom from the late 1970s onwards. It was from Thalapathi, the 1991 thriller directed by veteran Mani Ratnam, a retelling of the Karna story from the Indian epic Mahabharata. I was 15. Rajinikanth was 41, already in the middle phase of his career and at the peak of his stardom, even as his hairline was receding. Thalapathi went on to become a classic of Tamil cinema, proven again by the fact that Gen Z audiences were dancing in theatres when the film re-released a few months ago. From 1991 onwards, I became interested not only in Rajinikanth’s filmography, but also in the Rajinikanth story, while catching up on his older movies and lining up for the new ones.

Also read: Happy birthday Rajinikanth: From a bus conductor to superstar - journey of Thalaiva | In pics

The unlikely superstar: How Rajinikanth represented the dark-skinned masses

Rajinikanth has been candid that his stardom as an unlikely occurrence, often cracking self-deprecating jokes about his dark skin, face, and looks, even admitting that he had only a fixed set of mannerisms and styles that he repeated in most films. But if you look at how he appears on screen, he was above the average Tamil or south Indian: Dressing like no Tamil would, from leather vests to boots to stylish suits. To the average Tamil and South Indian, Rajinikanth became what was possible: He was their aspirational superstar. Skin colour, scars, and marks on the face didn’t matter as long as he exuded confidence and screen presence. To fans like me, he taught us to dream beyond our circumstances, without knowing he was doing so.

Also read: 75 years of a remarkable life! Rajinikanth fans are celebrating his 75th birthday. Here is a personal reflection on why the Tamil superstar inspires different fans differently, from masses to classes, from south to north of India.

I became a Rajinikanth fan from Thalapathi For me, the start of watching Rajini films was not from one of the typical "Tamil padam" drivel that milked his stardom from the late 1970s onwards. Also read: Happy birthday Rajinikanth: From a bus conductor to superstar - journey of Thalaiva | In pics The unlikely superstar: How Rajinikanth represented the dark-skinned masses Rajinikanth has been candid that his stardom as an unlikely occurrence, often cracking self-deprecating jokes about his dark skin, face, and looks, even admitting that he had only a fixed set of mannerisms and styles that he repeated in most films.
