In Tamil Nadu’s personality-cult dominated political landscape, image is everything and sometimes even imitations are accepted. For several decades, political parties have been hiring lookalike artists of actors and politicians during the campaign season. Dressed up like the stalwarts of the state’s political arena these artists sing and dance, deliver dialogues, imitate mannerisms, all for garnering votes.

With their make-up kits and tailored-to-perfection costumes, it just takes a few minutes for these artists to transform from their real to reel selves. As this is the first Assembly election in Tamil Nadu sans tall leaders Jayalalithaa and M Karunanidhi, the artists representing these leaders are the most in-demand.

“Lookalikes do have an impact on voters minds. This time, since the stalwarts are not with us, the lookalikes have a bigger role to play. It rekindles the memories of the old times among the senior voters” says Jitu, a Madurai resident.

Working mostly in the evenings, these artists travel across the state and campaign for various parties, with some members even capable of donning multiple roles. However, the changing nature of politics itself and the digital campaigns, targeted advertising has significantly impacted their profession.

Cine Star Abinaya, a city-based troupe has about 20 artists, they play - MGR, Jayalalithaa, Karunanidhi, Kamal Haasan, Rajinikanth, Vijayakanth, Sathyaraj, Ajith, Vijay and many other personalities. There are even separate persons to represent the MGR in his trademark sunglass, white-cap Chief Minister avatar and also the funky-colored costume-wearing cine-star MGR.

During peak election season, an artist earns upto Rs 2000 per performance, but they say that work has become scarce these days, when compared to a decade ago.

“Post-election campaign some of us drive autos, some work as shopkeepers, but there are also a few of us who are fully time artists” says Saraa, who runs Cine Star Abinaya.

He adds that many cannot sustain this profession after a certain age, as they have to go perform until late in the evenings and often have their meals well after midnight, thus affecting health.

Eswaran who plays Rajinikanth and MK Stalin is a full-time performer with no other source of income. “During non-campaign season I perform at temple festivals, I can also sing, so that’s an added advantage” he says.

When asked about their routine and fitness regimen, the artists say that they have to maintain diet control and walk a few minutes every day to maintain their physique and ensure that they continue to resemble their starry avatars.

Speaking of their livelihoods and families, the artists say that they are able to make ends meet during election season, but that isn’t so after election work dries up. Their lament is that, politicians and parties need them the most during poll-time, but neglect them thereafter.

“When we wear those costumes and sing and dance on stage, while seeking votes, our woes disappear, but then the reel life ends and eventually we have to deal with real life” says Saraa.

Rajinikanth to be honoured with Dadasaheb Phalke award

Weeks after actor Rajinikanth firmly reinforced his intention to stay out of electoral politics, his close aide has now come out with a statement, saying that Rajini’s political vision can be fulfilled. “Soon, I will be before you as a changemaker, ready to serve” the letter from R. Arjunamoorthy, who was designated as the Chief Coordinator of Rajini’s impending political party cryptically states.

Arjunamaoorthy adds that he wished to not use the picture of the actor, as the Superstar was now fulfilling his professional commitments as a filmstar. “I touch the feet and seek the blessings of Rajini who introduced me to the masses and embark on this journey to bring change, with the hope that I will bring significant change,” he says.

This announcement seems interesting, as it comes from someone who is seen among the close confidantes of the actor. It is notable that Rajini had made it clear to all fans and followers that he is firm on his decision, owing to health and that “No means no” regarding his political foray.

Shortly after Rajini had made the announcement to not foray into politics, his close advisor Tamilaruvi Manian too had stated that he would be quitting politics once and for all.

Recently, an announcement from Actor Rajinikanth’s unified fan club has said that their members are free to join other political parties if they wished. It added that they could join any party of their choice, after submitting their resignation to the Rajini Makkal Mandram.

“Under any circumstance, Rajini will be my leader. I am a Rajini fan and I take pride in it. Owing to that concern, we will never bring disrepute to his name. With the blessings of Rajinikanth, we will fulfil his wishes” the letter mentions.

Arjunamoorthy was associated with the BJP intellectual wing prior to joining hands with actor Rajinikanth, hence it remains to be seen whether he is hinting at a return to the BJP or whether he would be announcing a new party or outfit along with fellow Rajini fans.

This announcement can also be seen in the context of what Thuglak Editor S.Gurumurthy had told Zee media earlier. Gurmurthy shared his opinion that Rajini would influence public affairs without having to formally enter electoral politics.

“Rajini’s stature is different and his words can bring about change. I believe that he can create an impact in politics without formally stepping in. That’s what Rajini has indicated in the penultimate para of his statement (in Tamil) - ‘Without getting into electoral politics, I will serve the people of Tamil Nadu in ways that I can’. This service is not referring to charity, this is going to be political in nature” Gurumurthy had told Zee Media in an exclusive conversation.

'No means no', says Rajinikanth to fans who want him in politics

Actor-politician Rajinikanth on Tuesday announced that that he won't be entering politics citing health reasons.

“I see this health complication (hospitalisation) as a warning given to me by God,” the actor said in a 3-page statement issued on Tuesday.

"This decision of mine will disappoint my fans and people, but please forgive me," says Rajinikanth as he backs out of political debut.

“It is impossible to secure an uprising in politics and a big victory by solely depending on news media and social media for campaign after I start the political party. Those who have experience in politics will not deny this fact. I will have to go to the people for campaigning and meet thousands and lakhs of people,” he said.

Now this coronavirus has changed its form and is spreading as a variant strain. Even if the vaccine comes, if something happens to my health since I take immunosuppressant, then people who have trusted me and joined me will have to face several difficulties mentally and financially. Just because people will question me after I gave my word on my entry into politics, I don’t prefer to sacrifice my allies and friends. Time has come to change the fate of Tamil Nadu, says Rajinikanth

Actor Rajinikanth said that he would reveal the decision on his political foray as soon as possible, after meeting the district secretaries of his unified fan club — Rajini Makkal Mandram.

“In the meeting with district secretaries, they shared their thoughts and I shared mine. They have assured to stand by me in whatever decision I take” he told media outside his Poes garden residence.

The November 30th meeting with his unified fan club is his first publicized in-person event, that has taken place following the Covid-19 pan-India lockdown in late March.

About a month back, Rajini had dismissed a statement (that was rumoured to be his)which was doing the rounds on social media, claiming that he was quitting politics. However, he agreed that some contents of the statement pertaining to his health were true and that he would hold discussions with the functionaries of his unified fan club and inform people of his political stance.

The letter which was doing the rounds and was said to be ‘leaked’ mentioned that, the actor’s doctors had expressed reservations over Rajini getting into active politics, as he had undergone a kidney transplant and owing to the fact that there was no vaccine for Covid-19 yet.

There was also high uncertainty expressed over the actor’s course of action even when a vaccine became available, given that there were doubts over how at the age of 70, with existing medical conditions he would respond to the vaccine. All these hinted towards the actor quitting politics to the prevailing scenario and that the Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu were due by Summer 2021.

The text of a letter that was said to be Rajini’s, mentioned that if he were to start a party it would have to be firmed up by December and the announcement would have to come by January 15th. However, apprehension was also raised regarding the possibility of his health deteriorating after his entry into active politics, which would mean meeting people and holding rallies amid the pandemic.

“There is a statement similar to that of mine which is doing the rounds on social media and appearing on media. Everyone knows that it is not my statement. However, some of the details on that statement which refer to my heath condition and the medical advise given to me are true. At the right time I will discuss with the functionaries of Rajini Makkal Mandram and inform the people about my political stance” reads the actor’s tweet in Tamil.

In recent months, speculation has only grown about the actor’s political plunge, with posters cropping up in different parts of the state calling for his plunge into politics, as there are hardly 6 months to go for the Assembly elections.

It was with high expectations that Rajinikanth had called for a Press meet in Chennai on March 12th this year, however, the actor only outlined his vision for ‘cleaning up politics’ and refused to commit on his own political foray. “I have never even thought of becoming the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu or sitting in the Assembly and speaking. It is not even in my blood. I want a new wave, new power and new blood to go and seize power in the assembly and Rajini will be a bridge for this” he said.

“We need to tell people, this is not for Rajini, this is for the people of Tamil Nadu. I’m not here to get 15-20percent of the votes, this is my only chance. I am 71 years old and by the next polls in 2026 I will be 76. Once the message reaches more people and the common people want a change, let me see that happen and I will come make my entry” he had said cryptically in March.

It is notable that without having formally entered politics, Rajini has been making statements showing his political tilt and influencing opinions and different points in time. In 1995, he had spoken against the incumbent Jayalalithaa-led AIADMK government, which had swung votes in favour of the DMK in the Assembly polls the following year.

Similarly, in the run-up to the Lok Sabha Polls in 2019, Rajini made statements that expressed support towards several initiatives and decisions of the Modi-Shah-led BJP. On different occasions, Rajini had spoken in favor of demonetization, river-interlinking project, CAA/NRC, Abrogation of Article 370 among others. He had also hailed the Modi-Shah duo as Arujna-Krishna from Mahabharata while stating that people did not know who is Krishna and Arjuna among the duo. "They only know who is Krishna and who is Arjuna" Rajini had said, while a smiling BJP President Amit Shah looked on in 2019.

He was 74. Speaking briefly to the media outside the MGM Healthcare, the singer's son SP Charan said Balasubrahmanyam passed away at 1.04 pm. and thanked the hospital officials for the treatment and service. In an illustrious career spanning over 5 decades, SPB had sung more than 40,000 songs. He was undergoing treatment in MGM Healthcare since August 5 when he had first tested positive for coronavirus. The singer had shared in a video message on his Facebook page that he had mild symptoms but had tested positive for the disease. “Last two to three days, I have been having a little discomfort. Discomfort means little chest congestion, which for a singer is nonsense,” SPB said in his video message. “I am perfectly alright except the cold and fever. Fever has also subsided. In two days, I will be discharged, and I will be home. Lot of people have been calling me. I couldn’t attend all the calls. I have come here mostly to take rest, so there won’t be any disturbance to me, and to take medication. Don’t bother calling me. I am fine. I will be fine,” he said. He had been in critical condition the past few weeks and the last medical update from hospital had stated that the singer was on life support for the past few days. The veteran singer had also dabbled in acting and been a part of several blockbuster films. Awarded with Padma Bhushan SPB delivered blockbuster songs in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu and Malayalam. He was also a well-known classical singer and composed music for more than 45 films in Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam.

SP Balasubrahmanyam's health deteriorates, hospital says 'extremely critical'

With hardly 8 months to go for the highly anticipated assembly election in Tamil Nadu, posters have surfaced in Tamil Nadu’s Vellore, urging actor Rajinikanth to take the political plunge. “Change in Political culture and government; Party and government are separate entities - if not now, never!” the posters carried some of Rajini’s own slogans. The poster mentions the name of a fan, who conceptualised it and posted it.

It was with high expectations that Rajinikanth had called for a Press meet in Chennai on March 12, 2020, however, the actor only outlined his vision for ‘cleaning up politics’ and refused to commit on his own political foray. “I have never even thought of becoming the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu or sitting in the Assembly and speaking. It is not even in my blood. I want a new wave, new power and new blood to go and seize power in the assembly and Rajini will be a bridge for this” he said.

Rajini had said that his prospective party would have only limited booth-level committee roles, so as to prevent them from missing power following victory, as was the case with mainstream parties. He had visualised a party wherein 60-65 per cent persons would be below 50. “Youth with an adequate qualification and a decent social standing. The remaining 30-40percent would consist of retired Judges, IAS, IPS and politicians. This would also include women” he said.

However, pan-India lockdown was imposed in late March and since then there have been no public events, announcements or political statements from the actor. Having been non-committal about his political foray has further fueled talks of his party being launched in November. Such speculation that has been doing the rounds has forced Rajini’s publicist to issue a statement. The statement requested the media to refrain from visiting the upscale Poes garden locality (where the actor resides) and avoid crowding there in anticipation of a possible media interaction by the actor.

Functionaries who are part of the actor’s unified fan club - Rajini Makkal Mandram also told WION that the actor has not held virtual meetings or any discussions with them since March this year. The actor had earlier said that his own outfit’s district functionaries were unhappy with the proposal of the actor not being the Chief Minister candidate, of the prospective party.

Superstar Rajinikanth on Sunday warned the ruling AIADMK against reopening state-run liquor outlets in Tamil Nadu, saying if it was done, it should not harbour "dreams" of coming to power again, apparently in next year's Assembly elections.

In a tweet in Tamil, the actor asked the government to work out alternate modes of revenue generation.

His remarks came a day after Tamil Nadu moved the Supreme Court, seeking a stay against a Madras High Court order directing closure of liquor shops in the state.

The AIADMK cannot have "dreams of coming to power again if the government re-opens TASMAC shops at this juncture," the veteran said in the tweet.

The Tamil Nadu government had on Saturday moved the apex court challenging the High Court order for closure of TASMAC (Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation) liquor outlets on grounds of violations of COVID-19 guidelines, arguing that it would lead to "grave losses" in revenue and a complete halt in commercial activities.

The Madras High Court had on Friday ordered the closure of liquor outlets in the state, noting there were huge crowds and no social distancing was being maintained by tipplers.

It, however, allowed doorstep delivery of booze through online mode.

The Tamil Nadu government, in its appeal on Saturday, termed the HC order a case of "judicial overreach" and said online sale and home delivery of alcohol were not possible in the entire state.

Indian film industries including Hindi, Malayalam, Telugu, Tamil, Bengali have all come together, not literally, for a unique short film titled ‘Family’ that gives an important coronavirus message.

The short film starts with Amitabh Bachchan as he looks for his sunglasses. As actors go frantic looking for it, Priyanka hands them down to Big B and asks why he needs them in the first place. Big B responds, “I needed these sunglasses because I do not need them. I am not going to go out of the house for a few days. If it lies around, it will get lost. If it gets lost, you all will have to search for it. Now, why should I trouble you all?” To this, Diljit and Ranbir can be seen doing facepalm.

Amitabh Bachchan, Rajinikanth, Ranbir Kapoor & other Indian film celebs feature in short film on COVID-19

The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has led to nationwide lockdown in India and while it is important to stay home, it has also raised concerns for daily wage earners who have been adversely affected due to the pandemic.

Superstar Amitabh Bachchan has announced that he would be providing ration of 1,00,000 daily wage earners of the film fraternity. Bachchan has joined hands with Sony Pictures Networks India and Kalyan Jewellers for this initiative.
"Given the unprecedented nature of the situation we are in, an initiative undertaken by Mr Bachchan, We Are One has been supported by Sony Pictures Networks India and Kalyan Jewellers, through which the monthly ration of 1,00,000 households across the country will be funded," a statement released by Sony Pictures Networks on Sunday read.

"Through a commercial tie-up with a leading chain of hypermarkets and grocery stores in India, digitally barcoded coupons have been distributed to a verified list of workers from the All India Film Employees Confederation.
Furthermore, monetary help has also been extended to those in need," the statement further said.

The time period of this initiative is not clear, yet. In fact, Big B is not the only one. Producers guild too has been providing ration to daily wage earners. Several technicians on film sets are paid on per day basis and due to the lockdown, their incomes have been deeply affected.

The superstar has been an active voice in spreading awareness around coronavirus right from the time PM Narendra Modi initiated the junta lockdown. Big B has already been part of an awareness video initiated by the Maharashtra government and will also be seen in another short film 'Family', which has been conceptualized and directed by Prasoon Pandey. The film will be aired on April 6.

'Family' talks about the importance of staying at home, maintaining hygiene and social distancing. The film will also features Rajinikanth, Ranbir Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Alia Bhatt, Chiranjeevi, Mohanlal, Mammootty, Sonali Kulkarni, Shiv Raj Kumar, Prosenjit Chatterjee, and Diljit Dosanjh.

Actor Rajinikanth's clip urging people to support “Janata Curfew” on Twitter was taken down for violating Twitter rules on Saturday. Actor-Politician Rajinikanth on Saturday urged people to participate in the `Janata Curfew` on March 22, an initiative by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to avoid COVID-19 spread in the country. He took to Twitter and said, "I urge everyone to rise to the occasion and participate in the Janata Curfew by strictly staying indoors and practising social distancing." Cautioning the public he said that Italy tried implementing similar nationwide curfew to prevent stage 3, but due to lack of support from the citizens, the efforts failed, resulting in the deaths of thousands of people to the pandemic. "We don`t want such a crisis in India," he said. He said that in this crucial time let us also remember and thank the selfless service of all the doctors, nurses and medical workers by participating in the nationwide appreciation and prayers at 5 pm on March 22. As soon as the video was posted from his handle, many started calling out the video for spreading fake news. Many raised questions about how staying at home for 12-14 hours can prevent the pandemic from going into “Stage 3” in India. As a result, the tweet was taken down. Rajinikanth’s profile tweeted an image with the text similar to his speech and added the YouTube link of the video. Some Twitter users had also tagged the YouTube alleging that the actor had been spreading misinformation.

Rajinikanth’s tweet urging people to support 'Janta Curfew' taken down for ‘spreading misinformation’

In his first scheduled press conference after the one in December 2017, Superstar Rajinikanth clarified that he had never harboured the desire to be the chief minister of Tamil Nadu, but elaborated on his vision of "cleaning up politics" and fostering the next generation of young leaders by charting out a three-point agenda. However, he refused to take any questions and his speech did not reveal any dates and other specifics regarding his party apparatus and his political plunge.

“Before 2017 December I have never made mention of politics, prior to that I have maintained that only God will decide. In 1996 had I come to politics, I wondered and thought what should I offer to the people and I started following politics.”

Rajini's three-point agenda

1. "Both mainstream parties AIADMK and DMK have booth committees of around 50,000-60,000 party posts. These posts are needed during elections but aren’t required after winning. But after winning the polls and forming the government, the people holding these posts and their family members will take up contracts, tenders and be an impediment to the implementation of welfare schemes. This is bad for governance, the people and the party. We will keep only those that are needed".

2. "In the current legislative assembly, most members are aged above 50 and 60, those below the age of 50 are very few. New and young people don’t come into politics, if they do, it is because of influence. I envision a party where 60-65 per cent of people are aged below 50. Youth with adequate qualification and a decent social standing. The realigning 30-40 per cent would consist of retired judges, IAS, IPS and politicians. This would also include women. I will invite such genuine people who are admired by the masses and invite them to clean up the system."

3. "All across India, when it comes to state parties the party chief and head of government are the same people. If someone questions the leader, they will be shunted out. I propose one leader for the party and another leader for the government. There will be a council of experts who will recommence the necessary actions and decisions, policies and the political leadership and will be held responsible for implementing it - more like the role of a CEO. The party leader should not interfere in the work of the government and won’t disturb them, but will monitor them like an opposition party and replace those in government if they are found to be at fault.

Rajinikanth also said: “I have never even thought of becoming the CM of Tamil Nadu or sitting in the Assembly and speaking. It is not even in my blood. I want a new wave, new power and new blood to go to seize power in the assembly and Rajini will be a bridge for this”.

Rajini also played a clip of his December 2017 speech.

He said that he was very confident of his ideas and that as he started speaking to eminent people it was surprising that they didn’t accept it. "Even when I spoke to our district secretaries and told them that I didn’t want to be chief minister, they didn’t agree to it and asked who will join us? “But I say that we don’t need those who are after power, we need those who would come together for the national good.”

He cited the example of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister CN Annadurai who created so many leaders.

“In Tamil Nadu, there are two established political giants who have money and muscle power and in amid this, it will be difficult for us to make an entry.”

Speaking of the ‘Dravidian giants’- the AIADMK and DMK, Rajini said, that the two big leaders of the state are absent and that people could change the 54-year-old rule and that the public needs to think about it.”

“If I back out they will call me a coward, but on the other side, elections are not ordinary, my cadre and party men would spend money and am I not making them sacrificial lambs? “

Taking the names of great leaders like Mahatma Gandhi and Swami Vivekananda, Rajini said that a new movement should rise, using this opportunity.

“We need to tell people, this is not for Rajini, this is for the people of Tamil Nadu. I’m not here to get 15-20 per cent of the votes and this is my only chance. I am 71 years old and by the next polls in 2026, I will be 76. Once the message reaches more people and the common people want a change, let me see that happen and I will come to make my entry.”

This should spread across India. If political change and government change do not happen today, it will never happen, Rajini said.

Also read: Rajinikanth teaches his signature move to Bear Grylls in the new promo of 'Into The Wild' “Before 2017 December I have never made mention of politics, prior to that I have maintained that only God will decide. In 1996 had I come to politics, I wondered and thought what should I offer to the people and I started following politics.” Rajini's three-point agenda 1. I will invite such genuine people who are admired by the masses and invite them to clean up the system." 3. “But I say that we don’t need those who are after power, we need those who would come together for the national good.” He cited the example of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister CN Annadurai who created so many leaders. “In Tamil Nadu, there are two established political giants who have money and muscle power and in amid this, it will be difficult for us to make an entry.” Speaking of the ‘Dravidian giants’- the AIADMK and DMK, Rajini said, that the two big leaders of the state are absent and that people could change the 54-year-old rule and that the public needs to think about it.” “If I back out they will call me a coward, but on the other side, elections are not ordinary, my cadre and party men would spend money and am I not making them sacrificial lambs? “ Taking the names of great leaders like Mahatma Gandhi and Swami Vivekananda, Rajini said that a new movement should rise, using this opportunity. “We need to tell people, this is not for Rajini, this is for the people of Tamil Nadu. I’m not here to get 15-20 per cent of the votes and this is my only chance. I am 71 years old and by the next polls in 2026, I will be 76. Once the message reaches more people and the common people want a change, let me see that happen and I will come to make my entry.” This should spread across India. If political change and government change do not happen today, it will never happen, Rajini said.
