<p>U.S streaming giant Netflix is ramping up its mobile-only subscription plans in Southeast Asia and expanding local content, senior executives told Reuters, just as arch-rival Disney arrives in the fast-growing market. The world`s biggest video streaming platform by paid customers, Netflix told Reuters more than a million of its nearly 200 million subscribers around the world are in Southeast Asia, home to around 655 million people. But the market is ripe for rapid growth, analysts say, with the Disney+ Hotstar launch in Indonesia next month set to become a key battleground.<br />

"What we see in Southeast Asia is that it`s a very mobile-centric market", Netflix director for product innovation Ajay Arora told Reuters in a recent interview. That`s led the company to push cheaper mobile plans and adapt its product to fit lower-end smartphones, Arora said.<br />

Southeast Asia is estimated to have generated $600 million in overall subscription music and video revenue in 2019, according to a study by Google, Temasek Holdings and Bain &amp; Co - but that`s set to explode to an annual $3 billion by 2025, the study said.<br />
<br />
Starting with India in August 2019, Netflix has now launched mobile-only plans in Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, and Indonesia - all priced at below $5 a month. That`s a departure for Netflix, which has held firm on pricing in Western markets.<br />

Repeated coronavirus lockdowns across Southeast Asia have also increased the appetite for content streaming at home across the region. Consultancy Media Partners Asia estimates that Southeast Asia video streaming service subscribers will reach 14.7 million in all by the end of 2020.<br />

Netflix executive Arora said his firm is also working to expand its payment options in countries with low credit and debit card penetration. In markets like the Philippines, subscribers can pay for Netflix through their mobile telephone plans, or by purchasing prepaid Netflix cards at convenience stores.<br />

The company faces competition in the region not just from Disney+, a distant, but ambitious, global no. 2 in the industry. <p>One of India's most popular fashion designer Masaba Gupta is going to be making her web debut in a series called 'Masaba Masaba' which is based on her life.<br />

The trailer of the show was shared on Friday and gives a sneak peek into a contemporary show on the designer's personal as well as professional life. The series also stars her mother, actress Neena Gupta.<br />

Actors Satyadeep Mishra, Neil Bhoopalam and Kiara Advani also feature in the trailer.<br />

Written and directed by Sonam Nair and produced by Ashvini Yardi, the series will be available on Netflix, August 28 onwards.</p>

<p>Carole Baskin, one of the stars of the docuseries ‘Tiger King’ has now been sued by the family of her ex-husband for information in his 1997 disappearance.</p>

<p>The suit was filed in Florida, by Lewis’s three surviving daughters, is an attempt to force Baskin to submit information on the record. It demands Baskin, Tiger King subject Kenny Farr and the woman listed as a witness on Lewis’s will – turn over electronic device data, diaries and investigative material related to Lewis.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It also offers a $100,000 reward for any information on his disappearance.</p>

<p>Baskin became a household name when the series ‘Tiger King’, centred on a feud between Baskin and fellow big-cat sanctuary owner Joe “Exotic” Maldonado-Passage.</p>

<p>The series encouraged speculation on Baskin’s role in Lewis’s disappearance, a day before a scheduled trip to Costa Rica. He was declared legally dead in 2002.</p>

<p>Baskin, who received most of Lewis’s $6m estate and ownership of their sanctuary, Big Cat Rescue Corporation, has vehemently denied any involvement in his disappearance.</p>

Yellin said in the age of click-and-play, the sound needed to be short. But he wanted something that would build up tension and release it.</p>

<p>After many unsuccessful attempts, Yellin tapped Oscar-winning sound editor Lon Bender, as like Yellin he also tried a bunch of sounds, from the sound of music boxes to the doors opening, using strange instruments, and one of the finalists was a version of the 'ta-dum'&nbsp;that resolved with a goat bleating.<br />
<br />
''If we were going to do that call-and-response, that creating tension and then resolving it quickly, I liked the sound of the goat,” Yellin said. “It’s funny, I thought it was quirky. It was our version of (MGM’s) Leo the Lion. For a while, we were stuck on it.''</p>

<p>The goat sound was eventually scrapped, but the “ta-dum” remained.</p>

<p>Anyway, there were about 20 to 30 sounds in the box and then at the last, we had final three that include, the goat, a bubbly sound “from the depths of the ocean,” and Netflix sound that we hear today. <p>Sima mostly stays true to her profession. It's only when the inherent conditioning of the Indian ecosystem (read: misogyny)&nbsp;takes over her that she uses the word -- compromise. According to her, and she says it enough, the girl has to compromise. So if Aparna, one of her clients, is not ready to, she says she is negative in her approach and that she has to change (of course to the camera, and not to her).</p>

<p>"<em>Ladki ko thoda flexible hona padega</em>," she demands and finds one girl who is flexible, adjusting and beautiful. <em>Aur kya chahiye?</em></p>

<p>One of the two obsessions of people in India is Bollywood and its love stories -- for the movies have&nbsp;been packaging and repackaging the idea of falling in love in several different forms over the years. 'Indian Matchmaking', however, has got nothing to do with love despite being based on marriages.</p>

<p>People are binge-hate-watching the series, and to be honest, why not?! For me, it was like watching a slimy creature crawling on the ground. I am staring at it; I know it's disgusting, but I am enjoying the creepiness. Because I know me hating it will not stop the creature from moving forward.</p>

<p>The Indian "matchmaking"&nbsp;gets worse when it trickles down to matchmaking across the very threadbare of India. And that's what makes me hate the series -- for it shows only the pretty part of matchmaking in India.</p>

<p>In India, there'll be no Aparna -- for there won't be a 34-year-old self-confident lawyer, demanding a husband who suits her ideals. In a typical Indian household, Aparna would be reminded at least a 100 times in a month of her age, of the ticking clock and of her eggs getting older. And if she survives the onslaught, she would be pressed to marry the first guy who kind of suits her narrative.</p>

<p>I speak with experience. My cousin got married because of her colour and her intact hymen. Another cousin, bespectacled, was almost made to reject a girl because she also wore spectacles.</p>

<p>One cousin was made to let go of his 11-year long relationship because the girl did not belong to his caste. Another cousin is fighting a daily battle because the guy is a Tamil Brahmin, and oh, the tribe is "dark".</p>

<p>A friend, by his own admission, dated a girl for four years, and happily and willingly married a girl of his father's choice the fifth year.</p>

<p>Often under the garb of culture and tradition, and always under the veil of preservation and longevity of the family name -- sometimes, in the name of gynaecology, matchmaking imposes a timeline on everyone's life. So a 23-28 range is when you should get married, and if you're over 31, you'll have to compromise -- on your likes, dislikes and everthing that comes in between.</p>

<p>What Sima Taparia does in 'Indian Matchmaking' is dealing with families that can entertain the idea of a girl seven years older than the guy. And the girl can reject that guy on the basis of his salary.</p>

<p>The hate the series is getting hence makes little sense. This is a mirror to the society. This is what happens in India -- look at your parents, your neighbours, or your relatives; I bet 80 per cent of them were wed off in an arranged set up defined by the movement of stars and horoscopes. 'Indian Matchmaking' is, in fact, a prettier picture.</p>

<p>The social media is filled with judgemental eyes for Aparna, who just wants to live her life by her own rules. She is unapologetically herself. She hates comedy, and she says it. She's not going to compromise, and she says it. But we have so subscribed to the concept of compromise and adjustment in a marriage that we cannot see logic.</p>

<p>'Indian Matchmaking' is just the tip of the iceberg of matchmaking in India. The real game in India is way more convoluted, painstaking and disrespectful to human emotion -- especially for girls. It's a haggling of virtues and vices, and is decided by horoscopes and pre-decided norms for both genders. And emotional and sexual compatibility -- the most important factors in a marriage as far as Bollywood, and well, the entire world, goes -- take a forever backseat.</p>

<p><strong>Sima Taparia is a brilliant businessperson who peruses this need for social validation and makes a living out of it. She is not the problem; the series is not the problem. We are the problem.</strong></p>

The problem is that the show glorifies arranged marriages as being the ultimate goal of any young person’s life, and also promotes the practice as an epitome of Indian culture and of course, the onus of adjusting and compromising for a 'happily married life' falls squarely on the women.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As for the men, were they shopping for a product, or truly looking for a life partner? It does not surprise anyone that none of the participants ended up with their intended partners which looks like the makers completely forgot that Indian families have come a long way in the 21st century.</p>

<p>A total of 17 originals were announced by the OTT today which includes six new films and two new series. These pertain to different genres including comedy, light hearted drama, action and more.&nbsp;</p>

Bachchan, Rajkummar Rao, Aditya Roy Kapur, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Sanya Malhotra, Pankaj Tripathi, and Pearle Maaney); ‘Torbaaz’, a story of transformation (starring Sanjay Dutt); crime thriller ‘Raat Akeli Hai’ (featuring Radhika Apte, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Aditya Srivastava, Tigmanshu Dhulia, Nishant Dahiya, and Shweta Tripathi); ‘Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare’, a drama about two cousins and their quest for freedom (starring Konkona Sensharma and Bhumi Pednekar); romantic comedy ‘Ginny Weds Sunny’ (featuring Yami Gautam, Vikrant Massey) and award-winning animated romance film ‘Bombay Rose’, the first Indian animation film ever selected to open Venice Critics’ Week.</p>

From 'Class of 83' to 'Gunjan Saxena', Netflix India reveals exciting lineup of 17 originals

<p>British web series 'The Crown' will be returning for the sixth season on Netflix. The makers of the historical show have decided to extend the show for one more season.<br />

The critically acclaimed and award-winning show had originally been set for six seasons, but in January, the show creator--Peter Morgan revealed that they would call an end in the fifth season.<br />
<br />
Now, Morgan has decided to go back to his decision of making the sixth season to do "justice to the richness, and complexity of the story"- much to the delight of the audience.<br />
<br />
"As we started to discuss the storylines for series five, it soon became clear that in order to do justice to the richness and complexity of the story we should go back to the original plan and do six seasons," The Hollywood Reported cited Morgan as saying.<br />
<br />
The show creator has also cleared that season six will only cover the same period, shown in the series, but in "greater detail".<br />
<br />
At present, the makers will premiere season four in the coming months. The show will actress Olivia Colman plating Queen Elizabeth and Gillian Anderson as Margaret Thatcher.<br />

In the subsequent fifth and sixth season, the story will move to the 2000s and will see the royal baton passed to Imelda Staunton, with Lesley Manville set to play Princess Margaret.</p>

It's been a week since the release of Netflix's original 'Bulbbul' and the viewers are still raving about the refreshing story that writer-filmmaker Anvita Dutt has presented through the film.

It's been a week since the release of Netflix's original 'Bulbbul' and the viewers are still raving about the refreshing story that writer-filmmaker Anvita Dutt has presented through the film. Dutt, who has been a known name in Bollywood as a lyricist, presented an age-old story of witches but gave a feminist spin to it and based in Bengal. A Punjabi, Dutt has traveled and lived across India because her father was in the Air Force. While she has never lived in Bengal, Dutt admits that she loves the state and visits Kolkata almost every year. "I didn't visit it this year because I was busy with post-production work of 'Bulbbul' but I love Bengal, its food, its culture," said the filmmaker in an exclusive interview with WION over a zoom call. Dutt based her story in 1881 Bengal's presidency, where a young girl is married to a much older Zamindar and how she is suppressed over the years. Dutt revealed that how a particular scene in the film made her base the story in Bengal. "There's that shot in the film, when Indranil looks at Bulbbul and says, 'Joote kyu nahi pehenti' and she pulls her feet under the sari. So that was the first visual that had come into my head when I started writing the story. The visual was of the feet quickly being pulled back under the saree- feet that were dusty and had Alta on it. So, the Alta kind of pre-decided that it would be Bengal," Dutt said. Was it intended we asked? "Not consciously, but I love both Tagore and Ray. I am deeply moved by Tagore's women- by their strength, their tragedy, their fragility and their helplessness. Besides Tagore was a feminist. He had a female gaze. Same with Ray, so I think they played a huge part subconsciously. Because I love Ray's writing too, and how he raises women." Dutt had written Bulbbul many years back but the project only got greenlit when she pitched it to Anushka Sharma's Clean Slate films decided to back it. "Netflix came on board soon after." Would the film have had a similar impact if it was made a few years back and released on the big screen? Dutt says she did not have the medium in mind when she first wrote the story. " I think the only reason it may not have worked earlier was that my leading lady Tripti Dimri was in school then I wouldn't have had Tripti as my Bulbbul," said Dutt and smiled. She though states that films work because of good stories. "I would think hopefully, stories work. Good stories work regardless of so many factors. The most unlikely small little films have done so well at the box office in the last decade. So I think that is an example of that. Good story's work regardless of the medium I feel. Maybe I wouldn't have been as ready as I am today to have made this film, the way it has been made today. But the story would have resonated regardless of the time it was made in," Dutt added. 'Bulbbul' has relatively new faces in the lead roles- Tripti Dimri and Avinash Tiwary- and features Rahul Bose as the Zamindar, Bengali film stars Paoli Dam and Parambrata Chatterjee in key roles. We have seen him in TVF’s ‘Pitchers’, ‘Permanent Roommates’, opposite Ayushmann Khurrana in ‘Shubh Mangal Zyaada Savdhan’, hit web show ‘Panchayat’ and now he’s here to entertain us in Netflix’s ‘Chaman Bahaar’. Actor Jitendra Kumar is a classic example of ‘hard work always pays off’. A civil engineer by profession who graduated from IIT Kharagpur, Jitendra Kumar aka Panchayat’s Abhishek or Pitchers’ Jeetu has seen his fair share of hurdles and continues to hussle but believes in perseverance and patience. In an exclusive chat with WION, Jitendra Kumar spoke of his 8 years of acting career, his journey from IIT to the tinseltown and not getting affected by nepotism as he firmly believes in the fact that “audience makes stars and filmmakers only work with them.” IIT Kharagpur to Showbiz “I have been here for 8 years -- came to make films in 2012-13 with an intention to work in films. I knew no one. I grew on YouTube. I made sketches that became popular with people. When I got appreciation, my belief in telling the kind of stories I wanted to tell only grew,” says Jeetu who rose to fame with ‘Pitchers’ that people fondly remember for the catchphrase “Tu Beer Hai”. Only a couple years short of a decade in the filmy world, Jitendra Kumar’s success mantra all along has been “patience and perseverance”. “These years have taught me patience that if you want to tell your kind of stories then you have to give it time and be patient. You have to be mentally prepared for all pros and cons of that struggle. Don't get disheartened with unpredictability as that is everywhere and you can do nothing about it. Consistency, persistence, patience -- these are the three things I have learnt and swear by,” says Jeetu. Actors usually get inspired from their colleagues as they continue to grow individually in their space. Jeetu was recently inspired by fellow actor Zeeshan Ayyub who said in one of his interviews that “you work for yourself without paying heed to any form of competition”. This has stuck with Jeetu who insists that he will continue to do what gives him a kick without giving anything else much thought. Good with academics, Jitendra Kumar has studied in IIT. A civil engineer by profession, acting was not by fluke. He wanted it so bad that it happened for him. Explaining how it all started, Jeetu says, “I was in college. Having studied in Hindi medium school all my life, IIT was alien to me at first because everything was being taught in English. I got distracted from studies. I made plans to study English and catch up with the rest of the class when I got to know that wholesome education is what got us jobs post academics. I suddenly had to diversify my knowledge so I got involved in dramatics.” “My first experience with the stage and performance arts was amazing. I made close friends. I loved being part of plays and suddenly I realised I was cut by an acting bug. I thought first to get a decent paying job to make a lot of money for security and then maybe step into acting. I shot another video but even the creators didn’t like it. We thought of not putting it up on YouTube. I left it all and joined a job in a construction company because I am afterall a civil engineer. There after 6 months of working, I put the first video out called ‘Munna Jazbaati’ and it became an instant hit. People loved the character. Then I thought of starting to write again because I wasn't enjoying my job. I was very clear that I can't be a good civil engineer. I might get money because I am from IIT and people respect IIT but that’s about it. So when I made the decision of quitting my job, I had to ensure I had something to do to fend for myself because this was just one video that became a hit. "I thought of joining an acting school. I started applying, didn't get admission. I thought I’ll do some plays in Mumbai and apply again for an acting school. By then TVF had grown. I got so many opportunities there. TVF became my school. ‘Pitchers’, ‘Permanent Roommates’ released and people started recognizing me. Films happened. I started learning from my own experiences and from the experiences of actors, directors, script writers on the set,” narrates Jeetu as he spoke of hurdles behind the success. Forget Nepotism, Audience Makes Stars Ask him whether nepotism bothers him, Jeetu has a very rounded answer, “I have examples in front of me -- people have got big opportunities and they were not from this industry. All major stars today including Akshay Kumar, Shah Rukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan were outsiders. Things take time, but your work will get observed. To get that first opportunity will have its own challenges and will take time but that's the case in any industry.” “I am not scared of nepotism. If things were really unfair then maybe it would affect me. The comfort zone could be a reason behind nepotism. It's very obvious, if I know someone talented in my circle, I would recommend that person for a job because of that comfort zone.” He sums the issue of favouritism with, “Jo aapki pehli nazar mein hota hai, usi ko kaam de dete hain. (You recommend people around you almost instinctively).” Brimming with positivity and hope, Jeetendra Kumar says, “Audience makes stars, big filmmakers only work with stars. It's a business. Audience appreciates your work, if you are an interesting talent then you become a star and big filmmakers start working with you. Kapil Sharma, Sushant Singh Rajput are examples of this.” When asked of dealing with pressure charting a similar journey like Sushant Singh Rajput as he too made inroads into films from TV/Web, Jeetu says, “We don’t know what was the reason behind his death. It’s saddening, shocking but also eye opening. Main thing is that we have to take care of our health -- physical and mental. We should care for our body and get possible therapy and treatments. We should be around family, friends and share with them our true emotions.” He adds, “I feel if you enter any industry and have no links inside, it takes time to get the correct opportunity where you can create a body of work and seeing that you will further get projects and stories you want to be a part of --but it takes time. It’s challenging. Life is about challenges. For me, Sushant was brave and he took upon challenges. He achieved a lot. We don't know what he was going though and the reason for his death. We should not create theories.” Billu of Netflix’s ‘Chaman Bahaar’ Excited for the response to his new film ‘Chaman Bahaar’, Jitendra Kumar has a good feeling about it. “Billu is an interesting character. He experiences different situations as lots keep happening to him. He goes through varied emotions in the process -- a one-sided love, anger. He gets scared of a bear so starts a paan (betel) shop which initially doesn’t work but picks up after some time. It’s the turmoil, probably, that the audience can relate with,” says Jeetu. Preparing for the role took a lot of time and energy for Jeetu: “I was scared for people to not judge me as someone who has put on makeup and is sitting at a paan shop, so that I don't look like an eyesore in the setup. I did a lot of readings, trained in Chhattisgarhi dialect. I reached 7 days before shooting on the set. Met with a paan shopkeeper named Raju Bhaiya, learned a lot from him. Infact, we shot for a scene where I am making a paan, an art I picked up from Raju Bhaiya although it didn’t ended up in the final cut,” says Jeetu.
