Netflix announced this month that it was turning the books into a live-action, English-language TV series led by D.B Weiss and David Benioff, the creators of HBO megahit 'Game of Thrones'. Liu serves as a consulting producer on the project.

"If anything, the government is helping their economy and trying to lift them out of poverty," Liu told the New Yorker magazine in 2019. "If you were to loosen up the country a bit, the consequences would be terrifying." 
The senators also asked Netflix to reconsider the implications of providing a platform to Liu in producing this project. 
 
The Netflix streaming service is available in more than 190 countries but does not operate in China. The United States and human rights groups have criticized China`s treatment of the Uighurs.

The Parents Television Council (PTC) in the US has urged the White House to look into Netflix and some of its content that 'sexualizes' children. The parent organisation has stated that they have noted a 'behavioral' pattern of the streaming giant when it comes to certain content meant for children.

The request from the body comes amid the controversy around the French film 'Cuties' that tells the coming of age story of an 11-year-old girl as she discovers herself maturing, all the while looking for acceptance in her religious family and group of a young dancer she aspires to befriend. The movie has sparked debate and received backlash over its content with many demanding cancellation of Netflix - the platform on which the film will be streaming.

In a statement to Fox News, PTC called for President Trump and the Department of Justice to probe Netflix about the film.

"We are ultimately asking the President to instruct the DOJ to investigate Netflix not just for this film, but for its pattern of behavior,” said Melissa Henson, program director of the Parents Television Council. “We hope to get Netflix to be more responsible and refrain from sexualizing kids for entertainment going forward." 
 
In a letter last week to a US Senator, PTC President Tim Winter claimed Netflix has a “corporate practice of graphically and grotesquely sexualizing children through its entertainment programming.”

"The problem with sexualizing children on Netflix runs deeper than just 'Cuties,'" he added.

“There is a strong link between sexualized media and the victimization and exploitation of children,” Winter claimed. The film has prompted more than 30 members of Congress to speak out against it.

“Please instruct your Attorney General to investigate Netflix to protect children from sexualization and exploitation,” Winter demanded.

To make his point, Winter cited examples of other Netflix shows like 'Big Mouth,' which touches light-heartedly on puberty, as well as the British comedy 'Sex Education,' which centers on sexuality as it pertains to mental health.

Netflix, though, says watch the film first.

"'Cuties' is a social commentary against sexualization of young children," it says but not many agree, some say it's "disgusting" that the film is still on Netflix.

In Turkey, Netflix has been asked to remove the film altogether. Turkey has a powerful broadcast watchdog. It has the power to censor even online platforms. It says the film is "promoting the exploitation of minors".

Nawazuddin Siddiqui starrer ‘Serious Men’ released its trailer today as the Bollywood actor plays a lower middle class man who wants his son to stand on the same pedestal as the ‘serious men’ who sit in big offices.

He comes up with an elaborate con that sells his son as a child genius, a mix between Ambedkar and APJ Abdul Kalam.

&nbsp;Based on Manu Joseph’s book by the same name, Nawazuddin is portrayed as “just another man in Mumbai, stranded in the rot of a good marriage, an unremarkable life and a dead-end job as personal assistant to an insufferable astronomer”.

Netflix’s official synopsis for the original read, “When a slum dweller spins a web of lies in pursuit of the upward mobility he has long craved, his ruse could be especially dangerous for his young son.”

Nawazuddin in a statement earlier said, “I am very excited to be a part of Netflix’s Serious Men and work with a creative mind like Sudhir Mishra. This is my second stint with Netflix after Sacred Games, and I hope that people give Ayyan Mani from Serious Men the same love that they extended to Ganesh Gaitonde from Sacred Games.”

'Bad Boy Billionaires' is a documentary series about liquor tycoon Vijay Mallya, Sahara group`s Subrata Roy, Indian IT executive Ramalinga Raju and jeweller Nirav Modi. Netflix put the show on hold this month on order of a state court where Sahara alleged violation of Roy`s privacy rights. 
 
Roy is currently on bail in a case where he was ordered by court to repay billions of dollars to investors in a scheme which was found to be illegal. Roy denied wrongdoing in the case and has already repaid investors, his counsel said. 
 
Arguing for free speech in an appeal at the High Court of Bihar, Netflix said the docuseries was an assimilation of information available in public domain. The filing has not previously been reported. 
The pre-publication injunction granted by the court "freezes free speech," Netflix said in the filing earlier this month, which was reviewed by Reuters. It argued it has a right to free speech "on a matter of public interest."

The reactions were as follows: "child pornography is illegal in America". The statement comes from Deanna Lorraine, former Republican candidate for Congress in California. Another Republican Omar Navarro boosted a petition calling on users to boycott Netflix.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an audience score of three per cent and over 1,000 users have left a review on the website but professional film critics have given the film a favourable review.

A first wave of criticism, in August, led Netflix to withdraw "inappropriate" artwork used to promote the film, which was released in theaters that month in France.

"We're deeply sorry for the inappropriate artwork that we used for Mignonnes/Cuties. It was not OK, nor was it representative of this French film which won an award at Sundance," Netflix said.

DeAnna Lorraine, a former Republican candidate for Congress from California, tweeted that "Child pornography is illegal in America."

"As the mother of an 8-year old girl, I STRONGLY support #CancelNetflix," added Beatrice Cardenas, another California Republican.

The film, which received a director's award at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival, tells the story of Amy, an 11-year-old Parisian, who must juggle the strict rules of her Senegalese family and social media's emphasis on appearance.

She joins a dance group formed by three other girls from her neighborhood, whose choreographies are sometimes suggestive.

"The hypersexualization of girls (and boys) is disgusting," tweeted Omar Navarro, another Republican politician. "It is morally and ethically reprehensible. Pedophiles, child rapists and perverts would have a great time with #Cuties."

Among the voices praising the movie were American actress Tessa Thompson ("Creed", "Avengers: Endgame"), who found it "beautiful."

"It gutted me at @sundancefest," she went on.

"It introduces a fresh voice at the helm. She's a French Senegalese Black woman mining her experiences.

"The film comments on the hyper-sexualization of preadolescent girls. Disappointed to see the current discourse. Disappointed to see how it was positioned in terms of marketing.

The 'Bad Boy Billionaires: India'&nbsp;documentary series about liquor tycoon Vijay Mallya, Subrata Roy of the Sahara group, founder and former head of Satyam Computer Services Ramalinga Raju and jeweller Nirav Modi was set for release this week. 
 
The Araria district court in eastern Bihar state last week ordered a stay on its release after the Sahara group argued it would damage Roy`s reputation, according to a copy of the order which is not public but was seen by Reuters on Thursday. 
 
The court order said the series "would certainly damage the reputation of the head of the Sahara family". 
Roy is currently on bail in a case where he has been ordered to repay billions of dollars to investors of a scheme run by Sahara which was found to be illegal. 
 
Netflix had sought to appeal against the directive in the Supreme Court but was directed by judges on Wednesday to approach a higher state court first, the two sources with knowledge of the matter said. 
"Netflix is currently deliberating what to do … the show`s release is absolutely on hold," said one of the sources. Netflix declined to comment. 
 
The company counts India as a key growth market but its shows there have faced court cases and police complaints for obscenity or for hurting sentiments.

Britain`s Prince Harry and his American-born wife Meghan have signed an exclusive multiyear production deal with Netflix Inc, a major step in their plan to make a living for themselves outside the royal family.

Under the deal, whose value was not disclosed, the couple will produce films and series ranging from children`s shows to scripted content, the streaming platform said on Wednesday. 
 
The couple moved to Southern California with their infant son Archie this year after stepping back from royal duties in January and announcing plans to be more financially independent. 
 
They said they will produce content on issues that resonate with them and that their nonprofit orgnisation Archewell is focused on. 
 
"Our focus will be on creating content that informs but also gives hope,” the couple said in a statement on Wednesday. “As new parents, making inspirational family programming is also important to us.” 
 
Meghan, a former star of the USA Network television show 'Suits,' has no plans to return to acting under the deal. 
The couple have no previous experience as producers, but Netflix said they already have several projects in development, including a nature documentary series and an animated series that celebrates inspiring women. They said they plan to highlight diversity in front of and behind the camera. 
 
"We`re incredibly proud they have chosen Netflix as their creative home," Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos said in a statement. 
 
The Netflix deal follows a similar pact in 2018 with former US President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle. 
 
The New York Times said Harry and Meghan had been speaking with other Hollywood companies, including Walt Disney Co and Apple Inc. Variety reported earlier this month that they had met with Comcast Corp`s NBCUniversal.

Netflix said on Tuesday that the English-language adaptation will cover all three of the award-winning Chinese novels - 'The Three-Body Problem,' 'The Dark Forest,' and 'Death`s End,' written by Liu Cixin. 
 
The books tell the story of humanity`s first contact with an alien civilization. 
 
"Liu Cixin’s trilogy is the most ambitious science-fiction series we’ve read, taking readers on a journey from the 1960s until the end of time, from life on our pale blue dot to the distant fringes of the universe," David Benioff and DB Weiss, the creators and executive producers of television`s hit medieval fantasy series 'Game of Thrones'," said in a statement. 
Benioff and Weiss will be joined by 'True Blood' screenwriter Alexander Woo for the Netflix project, which also has the blessing of novelist Liu. 
 
“I set out to tell a story that transcends time and the confines of nations, cultures and races; one that compels us to consider the fate of humankind as a whole," Liu said in a statement. 
 
'The Three-Body Problem' was first published in book form in 2008 and became one of the most popular science fiction novels in China. An English translation followed in 2014.

It's difficult to separate real from fiction in a show like 'Masaba Masaba'. The Netflix original is set to premiere on August 28 globally and narrates a slightly fictional account of fashion designer Masaba Gupta and her mother, veteran actress Neena Gupta's life. 
 
A lot has been written about this talented mother-daughter duo. A lot is known, so for creator Sonam Nair who also has written the show, it may have been difficult to adapt the known incidents into a series and make it engaging to watch. And the first two episodes of the series does not disappoint one bit.

We get to see the glamour, the fame and put celebrities on a pedestal often forgetting that they are humans with similar problems and insecurities.

She has screen presence and is quite a natural in the scenes that demand her to be unintentionally funny. Together the two light up the screen and you want to know more about their lives, their struggles.

While in some protion, the narrative seems to slip a bit- but the overall pace of the series is nice and breezy. It steers away from emotional drama but it still manages to drive home relevant points without being superflous. Subtle in its context yet entertaining because of its leading women- thats how an ideal new age web series should be. And 'Masaba Masaba' has ticked all the right boxes so far.
