The Paradise: Nani reacts to mixed reviews from critics and audience; ‘I have also learnt from the flaws’

The Paradise movie review: Nani's latest ambitious film, The Paradise, had given high hopes to fans as the makers did not unveil the trailer before the film was released, but did it manage to live up to that curiosity? They work under the control of a ruthless man, Shikanja Maalik, played by Mohan Babu.

Sammakka (Sonali Kulkarni) is among those who demand an identity for the community. Her son Jadal, Nani's character, however, grows up with a deep resentment towards his mother. The Paradise movie review

As a child, Jadal becomes involved in an incident that eventually lands him in prison. Fourteen years later, he returns to Paradise to take revenge on Maalik. He initially has his own reasons for opposing his mother and her fight for the community, but circumstances gradually change.

The film also features Raghav Juyal as Vikram Malik, the son of Maalik, who wants to enter politics to create an identity independent of his father's shadow.

While Kayadu Lohar's Subbalakshmi, or Subbu, is introduced showcasing a different purpose, she eventually becomes involved with Jadal.

Without revealing too much, what follows is Jadal taking up the larger fight for his people.

What works

Nani is the strongest aspect of The Paradise. From his physical transformation to changed body language, his commitment is clearly visible. He approaches Jadal with intensity, including in the action sequences.

However, much of his role is around anger and violence, leaving less space for emotional material.

Also Read: Nani was already a fan of Raghav Juyal before The Paradise

The film's production design and cinematography appear convincing, as the 1980s Paradise setting has a dark, rough and oppressive visual identity. The action and landscape sequences are given the required scale for a film of this magnitude.

No doubt, the large-scale action sequences deliver what they are meant to do, but the issue is that there are simply too many of them.

Apart from Nani, Mohan Babu also has the screen presence required to play Shikanja Maalik, but the screenplay does not make enough use of him.

Coming to songs, only Aaya Sher works well.

What doesn't work

The biggest problem with The Paradise is not its ambition, but the screenplay. The first half establishes an interesting story around Jadal's troubled relationship with his mother and his conflict with Maalik, but soon, it loses its grip.

Jadal's revenge then becomes one fight scene after another. Just when the story appears ready to conclude, another conflict begins.

The nearly three-hour runtime becomes particularly difficult to sit through as the film repeatedly makes the same dramatic points.

Also Read: Bengaluru court restrains defamatory content against Nani's The Paradise ahead of release

Additionally, The Paradise is extremely violent, not only in the fight scenes, but also in certain scenes involving pregnant women.

The second half feels unnecessarily stretched as the film keeps adding layers after the central conflict has already been established.

Kayadu Lohar plays Subbu, but her character is given very little meaningful development, and often feels disconnected from the main story. Her story with Jadal also becomes predictable.

Raghav Juyal Vikram, meanwhile, had an interesting idea, but the character largely works as another obstacle for Jadal.

Even Mohan Babu's character is sidelined for considerable portions despite building him as the main antagonist.

A few scenes that are clearly intended to be touching can instead feel awkward or unintentionally funny.

Also Read: The Paradise: Nani confirms no trailer ahead of action drama’s release, explains why

The most irritating thing was the unclear dialogue delivery in several scenes. During the noisy action portions, certain lines are difficult to hear. The background score can also feel excessively loud.

Verdict

The Paradise has almost all the ingredients for a powerful action drama: a strong cast, a community fighting for recognition, revenge and plenty of action. But instead of using these elements effectively, the film keeps adding more ideas, characters and subplots until it becomes exhausting to watch.

Nani has given his all to the role, while Mohan Babu also makes his character, Maalik, intimidating. The Paradise has been granted interim protection from defamatory content. Nani has clarified the order aims to curb AI content against the film and not genuine reviews.

Days before the theatrical release, Nani’s upcoming film The Paradise was given legal protection by a Bengaluru court that prohibits the publishing and circulating of any ‘defamatory’ content against the film. The court order led to online speculation that it would affect the reviews for the film. However, now lead actor Nani has clarified that the injunction wasn’t against ‘genuine’ film reviews. Nani says court order not against ‘genuine’ reviews The Pradise team was in Mumbai to promote the film on Monday. While speaking at the press conference, the team was asked about the court’s interim injunction restraining the circulation of defamatory content on social media. Nani said the move was aimed at AI and bot-generated material and added, “It does not target genuine reviews.” On Saturday, a sessions judge in Bengaluru passed an order on an application filed by the film's producer, Sri Lakshmi Venkateshwara Cinemas LLP. How does the court order protect The Paradise? A Bengaluru court has issued a restraining order against the circulation of false and defamatory content targeting the upcoming film The Paradise, citing potential for irreversible financial and reputational harm. The film's makers approached the court after a wave of posts, comments, and URLs containing derogatory material surfaced across social media following the release of the official teaser on August 6. Arguing that substantial investments were made toward production, marketing, and distribution, the producers warned that unchecked viral dissemination right before the release could inflict unquantifiable commercial damage. Upon reviewing the submissions and evidence, the court determined that the content exceeded the bounds of fair criticism and appeared intentionally designed to diminish the film's commercial value. Recognising that unrestricted spread could cause irreparable economic loss, the court barred the defendants from hosting, publishing, reproducing, or sharing the defamatory material. This injunction follows a similar legal relief recently granted to the makers of the Yash-starrer Toxic.

A City Civil and Sessions Court in Bengaluru has issued an ex-parte ad interim injunction to stop the viral spread of false and defamatory content targeting the upcoming Nani-starrer film The Paradise.

In a decisive legal action to safeguard film investments, the Additional City Civil and Sessions Judge in Bengaluru passed an ex-parte ad interim injunction on September 19 restraining the distribution of allegedly false and derogatory material against The Paradise. The plea was brought forward by Sri Lakshmi Venkateshwara Cinemas LLP, the production house backing Nani’s project, just days before its scheduled global theatrical release on September 24. According to a report by Live Law, the producer sought both a permanent and mandatory injunction alongside urgent interim relief. The petition emphasized that substantial funds had been funnelled into the production, marketing, and distribution of the film, directed by Srikanth Odela and featuring Nani in the lead role. The move comes a month after Toxic: A Fairytale of Grown Ups was subjected to online trolling from the day of its release. Targeted defamation vs fair criticism The producer submitted to the court that derogatory comments, targeted posts, and specific URLs began flooding social media platforms shortly after the film's official teaser dropped on August 6. The filing argued that the coordinated attacks went far beyond fair artistic critique, amounting to targeted commercial defamation intended to sabotage the film's box-office potential right before its theatrical debut. To prevent irreversible commercial harm, the producer requested the court to dispense with prior notice to the defendants. Advance warning, the plea argued, could prompt unidentified actors to delete, alter, or further disseminate the defamatory links across other networks. After reviewing the evidence, the court agreed that the producer had established a prima facie case. The judge observed that the material appeared designed to undermine the production's commercial value rather than provide standard artistic evaluation. The court further noted:"Unrestricted viral dissemination of the material immediately before the film's release could cause unquantifiable and irreversible economic and reputational damage."It concluded that the balance of convenience clearly favoured the film's production team. The court order restrains the defendants, their officers, agents, and any entities acting on their behalf from "hosting, publishing, transmitting, reproducing or making available the allegedly false and defamatory content specifically identified in the schedule to the plaint." The interim order is effective through the film's release up until the next formal hearing date on October 28, 2026. The producer has been instructed to serve copies of the plaint, supporting documents, application, and court order to the defendants in accordance with procedural rules. The Toxic example The preventative legal action taken by the makers of The Paradise highlights a growing industry response to online targeted campaigns—a phenomenon that recently impacted the theatrical run of the Yash-starrer Toxic: A Fairytale for Grown-Ups. Released in August, Toxic posted a massive opening day of over Rs 100 crore globally, driven by high audience anticipation. However, the film immediately faced intense online scrutiny, heavy criticism over its narrative and adult content, and rapid negative word-of-mouth that contributed to a sharp drop in box-office collections from day two onward. By securing a preemptive injunction against unverified defamatory links prior to release, producers of films like The Paradise aim to prevent unvetted or malicious online campaigns from damaging a film's commercial trajectory before audiences have the opportunity to judge the project on its merits.

Interestingly, Nani revealed that he never discussed his admiration for Raghav with director Srikanth Odela. So when Srikanth was narrating The Paradise to him and described the antagonist as “the villain in Kill — perfect casting,” Nani was immediately excited. At the same time, he wondered whether the actor’s distinct performance style would translate seamlessly into Telugu, given that working in a language other than one’s own can sometimes limit the scope for spontaneous improvisation and the little nuances that actors naturally bring to a performance.

Those apprehensions, however, disappeared once filming began. Nani revealed that Raghav went beyond simply learning and delivering his Telugu lines, constantly thinking about the scene and adding layers to his character. “From day one, when I met him and we started shooting, he did so much with it. He did even more than he had done in Hindi,” Nani shared, highlighting Raghav’s ability to stay connected to the emotion and rhythm of a scene while simultaneously navigating a new language.

For Raghav, The Paradise is another chance to take on something different. The film also marks his Telugu debut, giving him an opportunity to explore a new language and industry. The Paradise is directed by Srikanth Odela and releases on 24th September 2026.

Nani has revealed that he was already a fan of Raghav Juyal’s work even before the two actors came together for The Paradise. Speaking about his experience of working with Raghav, Nani recalled watching Kill and being struck by the actor’s contribution to the film.

Nani was already a fan of Raghav Juyal before The Paradise: 'He did even more than he had done in Hindi'

Nani is gearing up for the release of his upcoming film The Paradise, which is expected to arrive later this month. Now, the actor has shared that the team has decided to reveal less about the film before it reaches theatres. At a press meet on Friday, Nani announced that the upcoming action drama will arrive without a trailer.

No trailer for The Paradise

According to Nani, the decision to skip a trailer was due to the team’s current priorities. With the makers concentrating on completing the final version, the actor said they did not want to divert the director, composer Anirudh Ravichander and other members of the team towards another promotional asset.

Also Read: The Paradise: Makers confirm Nani's action thriller to arrive in September; shut down delay rumours

"I think there won't be a trailer for Paradise," he said. "If you ask whether the trailer or the movie is more important at this point... under unavoidable circumstances – even though I personally don't like it and really want to cut a good trailer – the entire team collectively made a decision. There will be no trailer for Paradise."

Nani says The Paradise is not a pan-India film

Directed by Srikanth Odela, it is not a pan-India film, as per the actor. "We don’t want to call it a pan-India film. Along with Telugu, it will release in some other languages. Telugu is definitely our prime target, and I hope audiences in other languages also watch Paradise and enjoy it equally," Nani said.

Also Read: The Paradise: Nani's fierce braided look raises anticipation ahead of teaser launch

Arshad Warsi's 'Joker' comments on Prabhas's work in sci-fi Kalki 2898 AD has sparked another level of backlash from the Telegu film industry. In addition to Warsi's comment, Telugu actor Nani has faced even larger criticism for the remarks he has passed about the Bollywood actor.

After getting condemned for disrespecting Bollywood actor, Nani has come forward to put his stance on his comments, saying that the whole thing has been blown out of proportion through media and social media

Nani on his remarks on Arshad Warsi's comment on Prabhas

Accepting that his choice of words was poor, the Hi Nanna actor in a recent interview with Mid Day.com addressed the viral matter.

“Definitely, my choice of words was also poor. The biggest thing that you can do is accept your regret. But what I am also saying is that it sounds so bad when it’s translated. In this situation, the journalist was constantly trying to bring that question everywhere, and I was trying to say that they are giving it too much importance. Sometimes, emotions are strong and you will react to something and you might feel, ‘It was unnecessary, why did I react?'” he added.

Mentioning his fondness for Prabhas, the Telugu actor said that the whole thing was blown out of proportion.

“I saw online when a language is translated into English, how it might sound. That happens on social media,” he explained.

“I had only heard what he had commented because the cut clips were all over social media, like how mine was everywhere yesterday. See, it's about a very dear person. When it's about a person you really love, you immediately react and say, 'Why are you giving so much importance to an unimportant matter?' But after seeing a lot of reactions on social media, I went back and watched the whole thing in entirety. So, now I understand it. The whole thing has been blown out of proportion through media and social media. And even my reaction has been blown out of proportion,” the actor said.

What Nani Has Said About Arshad's Career?

Hailing Arshad's career and work, Nani said that the Munna Bhai actor has been loved in both north and south.

“Arshad Warsi ji is a very good actor and we all loved him in Munna Bhai, not just north or south, but the whole of India. It's a household movie,” he said. “When we sit with our friends in our homes, we can rip films and actors apart. But being actors, we need to be extra careful with our choice of words. So, in that way, him and me, both are victims,” he said.

Earlier this week, Nani was asked about his views on Arshad's comment on his film Saripodhaa Sanivaaram at an event.

Nani accepts his mistake for calling out Arshad Warsi over his ‘joker’ comment: ‘My choice of words was poor’

Bollywood actor Arshad Warsi has faced a lot of backlash ever since he said that Prabhas was like a 'joker' in Nag Ashwin's sci-fi Kalki 2898 AD.

Warsi's comment garnered a lot of attention, and several fans of the Rebel star have called him out for his views on the actor's performance. Several A-listers from the film fraternity have strongly reacted to Warsi's comment. And, the most recent one was by Telugu actor Nani.

What Nani has said about Warsi's comment?

During an event for his film Saripodhaa Sanivaaram, Nani was asked about his views on Arshad's comment, which had created quite a buzz on social media.

Without mentioning any of the actor's name or the movie, the Hi Nanna star slammed Warsi's comment, saying that he had got the 'most publicity' of his life because of his comment on Prabhas.

When Arshad said Prabhas was “like a joker” in Kalki 2898 AD

The controversy began when Arshad shared his views on Prabhas's performance in the sci-fi thriller. During his chat on 'Unfiltered by Samdish', the actor said that Prabhas “like a joker” in Kalki 2898 AD.

“I am really sad. Prabhas was like a joker. I want to see a Mad Max. I want to see Mel Gibson over there. Tumne usko kya bana dia yaar. Kyu karte ho aisa? Mujhe nahin samajh mein aata (What have you made of it? Why do they do such things? I never understand),” he said.

"The actor #ArshadWarsi who commented on #Prabhas garu has gained more publicity and popularity now than he ever did throughout his entire acting career." 🤣 ~ Actor @NameisNani pic.twitter.com/gfr6mh3Vwd — Hail Prabhas (@HailPrabhas007) August 21, 2024 × “The person that you’re referring to, this must be the most publicity he has got in his life. You are unnecessarily glorifying an unimportant matter,” Nani quipped. However, now Nani's comment has received a lot of backlash from Arshad's fans, who trolled the Telugu actor, by mentioning the iconic career of Arshad and his evergreen characters. Mentioning Warsi's character, Circuit, from Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. (2003), a social media user slammed Nani's comment by writing, “I like nani as an actor but this statement is just very stupid and arrogant also arshad warsi as circuit in munna bhai > whole career of nani.” #ArshadWarsi didn’t say anything wrong here.
In an exclusive conversation with WION, Indian superstar Naveen Babu, who goes by the name Nani talks about his upcoming film. At a time, when most films that are produced in the Southern parts of India are breaking records at the box office, Nani remains confident about the success of Dasara.

Dasara introduces us to this raw reality of India. Can you comment on that aspect first?

A lot of films do that, 'Kantara' did that in a way. I have been travelling across the country for the promotions of Dasara, I went to Jaipur, Nagpur, and Ahmedabad. Each place in India has different characteristics, food, flavour, architecture, and culture. While enjoying myself during the promotions I also realised the importance of hearing stories about the culture and bringing it into the mainstream format. You need to bring in the emotions, and that is the reason films are working. Everything is new, and exciting and remains a discovery. I think cinema can be a great bridge to understanding and celebrating each other.

You look vastly different from the trailer I just watched. Please tell us how you got into the skin of the character.

This film, Dasara was very difficult to shoot because of the coal mines' backdrop. So I actually went there, inside a coal mine, and also there was a set created which was filled with black pots. Even while shooting on the sets it was very difficult, you can feel the dust. Shooting inside the coal mines was literally impossible, but we still did it. You could see the rocks catching fire and the heat was unbearable but we continued. We knew we were getting into a challenging film but we were equally excited about the idea of it. It was difficult for me to get into the character, shoot in those locations, and speak in their slang. There is this rural Telangana slang that is very difficult to catch but the good part was my director, Srikanth Odhela, is from the area. He is from the area where the biggest coal mines are located, the Singareni coal mines, and his father worked as a dumper and driver for 40 years. So the way he knows and understands the story, nobody else will be able to tell it. So I like those stories which come from real life. Not just the fictional and imaginary tales, written within the boundaries of the four walls.

One of the scenes from the movie which has gone viral is how you consume alcohol in one go, but you said something interesting about why it's done that way and how it became a necessity.

In the villages near the coal mines, almost every member of the community work in coal mines, not just men, but women too. For them to survive the heat, and the dust, if a certain numbness is not felt, those people who work in the coal mines won't be able to work. Everything will bother them more. So they don't drink for pleasure in the evening, they drink early in the morning and go to work so that they can get over the pain, the heat. They all get numb.

After working as a rustic coal miner, you came back to your life as a superstar. How does that transformation happen?

Most of the time it used to be an entire night shoot, but there were days when we used to pack up at 6 pm, Then I had to remove my makeup and that took a lot of time, let's say 8 pm. Then the shooting location was an hour away from the place. By the time I used to reach home, it was 10 pm and I was completely dead by then. I hardly got time to be me, the superstar, while shooting this film. Because getting in, and getting out of character, becomes more hectic.

You gained immense fame nationally after Eega, where you collaborated with SS Rajamouli. Back then when you were shooting with him, did you ever foresee a future where he would become a global icon?

Not exactly these details, but we knew about his greatness. With Eega he gained national fame in India, but by then in the Telegu film industry, he was already well-recognised as a visionary director. He was one of the biggest directors in the industry. We observed that he was upping his game with each of his films. Rajamouli always chose to do something bigger, but of course, Oscar and all, I never saw that coming. But I'm very proud that it happened to him.

At a time when South Indian films are scoring so well at the box office, how confident are you about the success of Dasara?

The success of all these films has assured me that if it is a good film that there is an audience for it who will encourage it.

South Indian actor and film critic Kathi Mahesh dies at 44, celebs pay tribute

Cristiano Ronaldo slammed minnows Iceland for proverbially `parking the bus` in front of their goal as the north Atlantic Islanders held Group F favourites Portugal to a 1-1 draw.
Real Madrid ace Ronaldo had ten of Portugal`s 24 shots on goal in Saint Etienne on Tuesday, but failed to become the first man to score in four separate European Championships.
The 31-year-old equalled Luis Figo`s record number of caps with both the Portugal legends now on 127 appearances.
A superb finish by Nani gave Portugal the lead before Iceland`s industrious midfielder Birkir Bjarnason volleyed the equaliser.
But Ronaldo stormed off after the final whistle, clearly frustrated by his own failure in front of goal, while Iceland scored by converting one of only four chances.
Iceland`s dogged defence was capped by an outstanding display from Iceland goalkeeper Hannes Halldorsson."It was difficult over the 90 minutes, because they scored one goal and that was after they had put every player behind the ball," fumed Ronaldo.
"They put the bus in the net. (Parked the bus in front of goal).
"We tried our best, we created many chances and kept the ball.
"Iceland didn`t try nothing, they just defend, defend, defend, they had two chances and scored a goal, it was a lucky night for them.
"We`re frustrated, they didn`t try and play.
"It`s why I think they will do nothing here. In my opinion, it`s a small mentality.
"It`s difficult when Portugal tries to win the game and the other team doesn`t."
Portugal are now under pressure in their second game against Austria, who earlier lost their opening match 2-0 to Hungary in the other pool match in Bordeaux.
But Ronaldo is confident of victory in Paris on Saturday.
"It`s a little bit of frustration for us, but this is just the beginning, we`re not worried about that," said the former Manchester United star.
"If you look at Spain and France, they are strong teams in the tournament and they had difficulties winning their first game.
"It was tough, but we are 100 percent confident we`re going to win the next game."
Ronaldo was not the only Portugal forward to feel the effects of a lack of finishing.
"We had enough chances, but we couldn`t score another one," added Nani, who also used to grace Old Trafford.
"It`s only the first game and we have to win our next two games.
"We were on top, we were the better team and we played the better football, but Iceland are a good team and played a lot of long balls, which caused us problems. That`s football.
"We`ve shown we are a good team, but this was the first game, there was a lot of anxiety. I think we will relax more from now, but we have to score more."
Portugal boss Fernando Santos lamented Nani`s first-half header which smashed off the boot of Iceland goalkeeper Halldorsson.
"Nani`s header was blocked by their goalkeeper, who still doesn`t know how he did it, that`s football," said the Portugal manager
"We could have done better in defending the cross which led for their goal, but this was the first game, there were a few nerves and we need to play better for the next two games."
