South Korean authorities Tuesday (Dec 17) made an attempt to raid the presidential office once again in order to gather evidence over legality of the emergency martial law that Yoon Suk Yeol imposed earlier this month, news agency Yonhap reported.
A joint investigation team including police and the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO) was trying to access computer servers of the presidential office’s security service to get records of phones including one used by the police commissioner, Yonhap reported.
Earlier, South Korean prosecutors on Tuesday ordered suspended President Yoon Suk Yeol to appear by the weekend for questioning over his controversial martial law attempt, warning that he could face arrest if he fails to comply, reported Yonhap News Agency.
Yoon, who was impeached by parliament on Saturday (Dec 14) in the second attempt b lawmakers after his martial law bid failed, is under investigation for alleged insurrection. 
Both prosecutors and a joint team of police, defence ministry officials, and anti-corruption investigators are involved in the probe. If convicted, Yoon and his close allies could face life imprisonment—or even the death penalty.

When the pair came together the tourists still needed 33 runs to make Australia bat again at the Gabba on another day marred by rain delays.
But under gloomy skies and with rain about, the two managed to see off Australia's much-vaunted pace attack to frustrate the home side on day four.
Deep scored the crucial runs with an edge to the boundary just past the outstretched hand of Nathan McSweeney off Australian captain Pat Cummins.
He celebrated two balls later by smashing Cummins over deep mid-wicket for a massive six before umpires took them from the field for bad light with India 252-9.
Deep was not-out 27 and Bumrah was on 10.
Missing pace spearhead Josh Hazlewood, who was only able to bowl one over Tuesday after picking up a match-ending calf injury, Cummins (4-80) and Mitchell Starc (3-83) toiled hard to eke out wickets.
After losing almost all of Saturday and Monday due to rain, play was halted three more times on Tuesday.
During that time India were able to edge closer to the follow-on target despite losing wickets at crucial times.
When the last pair came to the wicket they still needed 33 runs to avoid the follow-on.
But the numbers 10 and 11 battled hard and put on 39 runs under dark skies and in light rain.
Resuming the morning at 51-4, opening batsman KL Rahul was dropped on the first ball of the day when Steve Smith somehow missed a simple catch at first slip.
Rahul and India captain Rohit Sharma saw out the first half-hour and took the score to 74 before Rohit edged a Cummins delivery that moved slightly off the seam to wicketkeeper Alex Carey.
Rahul took advantage of Smith's first-ball lapse and brought up an impressive half-century with a lovely cover drive, shortly before a shower sent the players scurrying from the field for 25 minutes.
He added 51 runs to his overnight total before Smith made amends with a stunning catch to dismiss Rahul for 84, diving to his right and taking a one-handed catch at first slip 20 minutes before lunch.

Nitish Kumar Reddy and Ravindra Jadeja put on 53 and looked increasingly comfortable.
But just when it looked like the pair would take the score to the 246 needed to avoid the follow-on, Cummins broke through when Reddy played on for 16, leaving Jadeja with only the bowlers to try to avoid the follow-on.

A powerful earthquake hit the Pacific island of Vanuatu on Tuesday, smashing buildings in the capital Port Vila including one housing the US and other embassies, with a witness telling AFP of bodies seen in the city.
The 7.3-magnitude quake struck at a depth of 57 kilometres (35 miles), some 30 kilometres off the coast of Efate, Vanuatu's main island, at 12:47 pm (0147 GMT), according to the US Geological Survey.
The ground floor of a building housing the US, French and other embassies had been crushed under higher floors, resident Michael Thompson told AFP by satellite phone after posting images of the destruction on social media.
"That no longer exists. It is just completely flat. The top three floors are still holding but they have dropped," Thompson said.
"If there was anyone in there at the time, then they're gone."
Thompson said the ground floor housed the US embassy. This could not be immediately confirmed.
The United States has closed the embassy until further notice, citing "considerable damage" to the mission, the US embassy in Papua New Guinea said in a message on social media.

The New Zealand High Commission, housed in the same building, suffered "significant damage", a statement from Foreign Minister Winston Peters' office said.
"New Zealand is deeply concerned about the significant earthquake in Vanuatu, and the damage it has caused."
<h2>Roof collapsed on cars</h2>
Thompson, who runs a zipline adventure business in Vanuatu, said: "There's people in the buildings in town. There were bodies there when we walked past."
A landslide on one road had covered a bus, he said, "so there's obviously some deaths there".

The quake also collapsed at least two bridges, and most mobile networks were cut off, Thompson said.
"They're just cracking on with a rescue operation. The support we need from overseas is medical evacuation and skilled rescue, kind of people that can operate in earthquakes," he said.
Video footage posted by Thompson and verified by AFP showed uniformed rescuers and emergency vehicles working on a building where an external roof had collapsed onto a number of parked cars and trucks.
The streets of the city were strewn with broken glass and other debris from damaged buildings, the footage showed.
Nibhay Nand, a Sydney-based pharmacist with businesses across the South Pacific, said he had spoken to staff in Port Vila who said most of the store there had been "destroyed" and that other buildings nearby had "collapsed".
"We are waiting for everyone to get online to know how devastating and traumatic this will be," Nand told AFP.
A tsunami warning was issued after the quake, with waves of up to one metre (three feet) forecast for some areas of Vanuatu, but it was soon lifted by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.
Earthquakes are common in Vanuatu, a low-lying archipelago of 320,000 people that straddles the seismic Ring of Fire, an arc of intense tectonic activity that stretches through Southeast Asia and across the Pacific basin.

Bodies found amid rubble in Vanuatu capital after powerful 7.3 magnitude quake

The HTS leader also called for unity in Syria, a country made up of several minority groups and ethnicities. While addressing the members of the Druze community, a sect of Shi’ite Islam making up about 3 per cent of Syria's pre-war population, he said, "Syria must remain united. Three broken idols of Hindu Gods have been recovered from the ancient Hindu Temple in Uttar Pradesh's Sambhal, authorities said on Monday (Dec 16).
The idols were found in the well near the Shiv-Hanuman Temple, which was opened on Saturday (Dec 14) after being closed for the last 46 years.
Sambhal Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Shrish Chandra, who was present at the site, said that the idols were recovered during the digging of the well.

“The area has been secured so that excavation can be done smoothly,” he added.
The Shiv-Hanuman Temple has been closed since 1978 and was reopened by the authorities two days ago after they “stumbled upon” it during a drive against power theft. The devotees also painted religious slogans like 'Har Har Mahadev' and 'Om Namah Shivay' on the walls of the temple.
After the reopening of the temple, the premises were cleaned and electricity was restored. CCTV cameras were also installed in the temple for security reasons.
On November 24, a clash broke out between protesters and security personnel in Sambhal after a court order for a survey of a mosque, which led to four people being killed and many others getting injured.

A Russian woman earlier accused of stowing away on a flight from New York to Paris was arrested again while on her way to Canada, authorities confirmed on Monday (Dec 16). Following her Paris flight fiasco, she was held in Philadelphia and was ordered not to leave the area except for court proceedings or meetings with her lawyers. However, she allegedly cut off her GPS-monitoring ankle device and boarded a bus to Canada.
The New York Times reported that the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Buffalo had arrested her again. The woman, named Svetlana Dali, is now scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday (Dec 17).
Last month, Dali grabbed global headlines after managing to enter a Delta fight without a boarding pass. She was spotted at John F Kennedy International Airport on November 26. Later, it was revealed that she entered the aircraft “through a special lane for airline employees masked by a large Air Europa flight crew."
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) said in a statement, “This is the only reported case of unauthorized access when over 18 million passengers were screened at TSA security checkpoints during the busiest Thanksgiving travel season ever. No one has ever fully breached the TSA security screening process."

According to a criminal complaint filed in that case, Delta employees failed to stop the woman as they were busy “helping ticketed passengers board”.
As the plane took off, Delta employees quickly realised Dali was on the plane. The plane crew notified French law enforcement and the woman was arrested at Charles de Gaulle Airport on November 27. She was flown back to New York on December 4 and was taken into custody.

Delhi-NCR once again implemented Stage IV of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) on Monday, December 16, after the air quality in the national capital declined rapidly amid the cold wave and the city breached the 400 mark on the Air Quality Index.
This comes hours after the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) imposed GRAP Stage-III when the AQI in Delhi was recorded at around 300.
Earlier, the GRAP Stage-III and IV restrictions were revoked in the national capital on December 5 after the air quality improved in the region. However, the AQI levels dipped once again in Delhi, prompting the centre’s air quality panel to re-invoke Stage IV of GRAP. It includes restrictions on vehicles with high emissions, minimising vehicular congestion by authorities, a ban on non-essential construction and demolition activities, and ordering hybrid mode for classes up to the primary.

"Nielsen was told his services were no longer required and I had zero communication from anyone and that was the moment I thought: well, I'm not really sure they actually want me to do this job," Gillespie told Australian broadcaster ABC in Brisbane.
He added: "For a decision to then be made (about Nielsen) and the head coach doesn't get a text message, phone call or email about a decision that's a pretty big decision.
"It just left me thinking well I'm really not sure if the PCB wants me."
The PCB accepted Gillespie's resignation, the second in two months after former South Africa opener Gary Kirsten quit as white-ball coach over differences with selectors.
Gillespie had the worst possible start to his coaching stint when Pakistan were whitewashed 2-0 by Bangladesh.
That was followed by an innings defeat against England in the first Test in Multan.
The defeat prompted the PCB to make sweeping changes, removing Gillespie from the selection panel and dropping star players Babar Azam, Shaheen Shah Afridi and Naseem Shah.
Pakistan won the remaining two Tests to seal the series 2-1.
Gillespie refused to join the team for the two-Test series in South Africa starting in Centurion from December 26.

Sitting in the glass defendants' box, Dominique Pelicot reaffirmed that he had told "the whole truth" since the beginning of the trial on September 2 in the southern French city of Avignon.
He also thanked the court for allowing him to remain seated on a special chair because of his fragile state of health, which "could have been interpreted as nonchalance" but which was not, he added. 
<h2>'Rest of my life in your hands' </h2>
He added that "I have been called many things" but "I rather intend to be forgotten," saying he felt an "inner shame".
"I can tell my whole family that I love them," he said.
Turning to the five judges who will issue the verdict, he said: "There you go, you have the rest of my life in your hands." 
The verdict for him and the other defendants is expected Thursday morning but the timing could slip, presiding judge Roger Arata said as he adjourned the trial.

"We will head to the deliberation chamber and will not leave until we have made our decision," Arata told the court, saying the delivery of the verdict had been scheduled for 0830 GMT Thursday, but cautioning the timing was "theoretical" and it could be postponed to Thursday afternoon or Friday morning.

Serbian authorities have been using sophisticated digital surveillance technology to spy on journalists and activists in the Balkan country, Amnesty International said in a report published Monday. 
According to the report -- "A Digital Prison" -- Serbian authorities have deployed spyware that "provides Serbian authorities with extensive surveillance capabilities once installed on a target's device".
The report includes testimonies of a journalist and activist who accused authorities of covertly installing spyware on their devices while in custody and during an interview with officials.
"Our investigation reveals how Serbian authorities have deployed surveillance technology and digital repression tactics as instruments of wider state control and repression," said Dinushika Dissanayake, Amnesty International's deputy regional director for Europe.
The report highlights the use of the Cellebrite and NoviSpy software and forensic tools to target phones and devices belonging to members of civil society.

NoviSpy can be used to remotely turn on a phone's microphone or camera for recording and extracting sensitive personal data, according to Amnesty.
Cellebrite products are widely used by law enforcement agencies across the globe to unlock smartphones and search for evidence. 
Belgrade-based youth activist Nikola Ristic -- who was profiled by Amnesty in the report -- told AFP his phone was hacked by authorities after being arrested at a protest in November over a deadly railway station roof collapse. 
While in custody, Ristic said intelligence officials seized his phone and he was repeatedly told to unlock the device.
"Their behaviour and the conversation with me seemed like a charade, a cover for something else," he told AFP, adding that he did not have any compromising evidence or material stored on the phone. 
After being released, Ristic later handed over his phone to Amnesty. 
After a forensic scan, it found that Cellebrite had been used to unlock the device and NoviSpy spyware had been installed. 
"We don't actually have agencies focused on the safety of citizens, but rather spy agencies," Ristic told AFP.
Serbia's intelligence agency (BIA) dismissed the Amnesty report's claims as "absurd". 
In a separate statement, Serbian police said its forces only use forensic tools in accordance with the country's laws. 
According to Amnesty, Serbia received the phone unlocking software from Cellebrite as part of a broader package aimed at helping the country meet the requirements for European Union integration.
Independent journalists and civil society groups in Serbia have long accused the government and its allies of targeting them with defamatory statements, lawsuits, and public threats.
