Dinesh Karthik's international career has been a topsy-turvy ride. While he has never been a regular in Team India setup for a long period, Karthik has always found ways to keep reinventing himself and stage a comeback in the national setup at regular intervals.

With the 2022 Men's T20 World Cup to be held later this year, the 36-year-old Karthik will be eager to make a strong claim for a return to the T20I side with consistent performances in the forthcoming IPL 2022 edition, to be held in India. Karthik is set to be under the hammer in the upcoming IPL 2022 mega auction, to be held on February 12 and 13 in Bengaluru, after the two-time winners Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) didn't retain him last year.

Karthik, with 4,046 runs in 213 matches and 147 dismissals behind the stumps (second-most overall) in IPL, will once again be in demand among the franchises in the auction proceedings. Ahead of the auction, he revealed which franchise will he feel great to be a part of.

Harbhajan Singh dropped a bomb by announcing his international retirement before the end of 2021. Bhajji represented Team India for 18 years, with his career spanning from 1998-2016 (when he last represented India). The veteran spinner made a big name in world cricket, ending with 711 wickets at the highest level.

During his glorious run for Team India, the 41-year-old played under various captains. He started under Mohammad Azharuddin and was led by the likes of Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli (along with also being captained by Virender Sehwag and Anil Kumble for a brief period). In the IPL, Bhajji played under Sachin Tendulkar, Rohit Sharma, Eoin Morgan, Dhoni whereas he himself captained the Mumbai Indians (MI) -- where he played for 10 years -- and led them to the 2011 Champions League title.

Despite him being in the leadership group for Team India and the Mumbai-based IPL franchise, he was never considered for captaining India. Before the 2007 T20 World Cup, he was being considered as one of the contenders for leading the Men in Blue in the showpiece event before Dhoni got the top post.

As per the former India spinner, those who aren't favourites don't get the captaincy honour. "Oh yes! That is also an achievement that no one talks about - my captaincy. If you are not among the favourites of someone (powerful), you don’t get such honours. But, let’s leave that topic. I know I was capable enough (to lead) as we used to guide a lot of captains. No big deal if I was an India captain or not. No regrets either if I didn’t become the captain for my country. I was always happy to serve the nation as a player," he told Cricketnext.com.

Didn't know anyone in BCCI: Harbhajan Singh opines on not being considered for India captaincy

Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting recently recalled how he played a role in Rohit Sharma's appointment as the captain of the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Rohit was appointed as the captain of the Mumbai Indians in the year 2013. Ponting was the head coach of the franchise at the time and he had suggested the youngster's name to the team management.

Rohit was recently appointed as India's limited-overs captain after Virat Kohli's departure. Though he has led India on a few ocassions in the past, Rohit is now the full-time skipper of the Indian team. He is the most successful IPL captain of all time with five titles to his name with Mumbai Indians and has impressed many with his leadership qualities over the years.

Ponting, who himself is one of the greatest captains of all time in international cricket, is a big admirer of Rohit as a leader. The former Australian skipper revealed how he sacrificed his own spot and suggested the Mumbai Indians management to hand over the captaincy to Rohit, a move that turned out to be a masterstroke.

"I was at Mumbai Indians when Rohit Sharma took over the captaincy there. I was bought in the auction to be their captain and unfortunately, I wasn't playing well enough after the first few games to keep myself in the team, so I had to make room for another international player to come into the side," Ponting said on 'The ICC Review'.

"The owners and the team management wanted to know who I thought would be the appropriate person to take over the leadership at the Mumbai Indians. There were a few names thrown around between owners and the other coaches but it was really clear to me that there was only one guy that can lead the team - he was a young guy and his name happened to be Rohit Sharma," he added.

Since taking over as captain of the Mumbai Indians, Rohit has led the team to a record five IPL titles and has become the most successful captain in the history of the league. He has also led India in a few tournaments and has tasted great success at the international level as well. Ponting heaped praise on Rohit for being a successful leader.

"I think the proof is in the pudding with what he has done at the Mumbai Indians since that moment on. He has been a very successful leader there and has been when he has led India on a few occasions as well. If I go back to what I said at the start about being on top of your game when you take over a captaincy role, then it is pretty hard to argue after what he has done with his Test cricket in the last 2-3 years. He has played as well as anybody in the world through that period of time, and we know how good he is as a white-ball player," said the former Australian skipper.

It remains to be seen if Rohit, who is one of the favourites to take over as India's next Test captain after Kohli, is appointed as the skipper in the longest format as well or not.

Mumbai Indians (MI) had a tough time deciding their final four retentions ahead of the deadline day with a number of superstars in their star-studded squad. The five-time champions let go of the likes of Hardik Pandya, Krunal Pandya and Ishan Kishan among others while retaining their captain Rohit Sharma and three others.

Former India pacer Zaheer Khan, who is part of the Mumbai Indians backroom staff, recently revealed why the franchise didn't retain Hardik ahead of the mega auction. Hardik had been a vital cog in the Mumbai Indians set up over the years and played an instrumental role in the team's success in the IPL.

However, he was let go of by the five-time champions, who decided to keep Rohit, Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav and Kieron Pollard. Hardik, who has been dealing with constant fitness issues, didn't bowl at all in IPL 2021 and has also been left out of the Indian team after average performances in the T20 World Cup 2021.

However, Zaheer has backed the star all-rounder to make a strong comeback after gaining full fitness while opening up on Mumbai Indians' decision to release him.

"Absolutely (Hardik can regain his full fitness). Hardik is very keen on that. The retention calls usually take into consideration various aspects and angles. The debates are usually very long (laughs). It is not an easy process when you set yourself up for a big auction and say goodbye to all players with a heavy heart with whom you spent a lot of time and energy," Zaheer was quoted as saying by TimesofIndia.com.

With two new teams - Lucknow and Ahmedabad also in the fray this time around, it remains to be seen if Hardik will head to the auction pool or he will be picked by one of the two new franchises in the players' draft before the auction. Both Lucknow and Ahmedabad franchises can pick three players each from the non-retained ones ahead of the mega auction.

Hardik is one of the best all-rounders in the league with 1476 runs and 42 wickets in 96 matches in his IPL career so far.

Zaheer Khan explains why Hardik Pandya was not retained by Mumbai Indians ahead of IPL mega auction

Suryakumar Yadav has done the hardyards to represent Team India. Being groomed in the Gautam Gambhir-led Kolkata Knight Riders' (KKR) setup, SKY returned to Mumbai Indians (MI) in IPL 2018 and his career changed from thereon. From IPL 2018-2020, the right-hander was in stunning form for the Rohit Sharma-led MI line-up, amassing over 400 runs in each season.

Despite his IPL heroics, and also some good outings in the domestic circuit, the right-hander had to toil hard to break into the national side. During his rich form in IPL 2020, Team India's limited-overs squad was announced for the Australia tour. While many thought he would be included, SKY wasn't named in the squad. Recently, the MI batter opened up on his long wait to enter the Indian team.

The 31-year-old in a recent chat with cricket presenter Vikram Sathaye told, "Almost half the IPL was over (in 2020) before that match (against RCB) happened. I still remember, the Indian team (for the tour of Australia) was going to be announced. I had a good IPL 2019 and 2020 season, and I scored runs in domestic cricket as well," said the right-handed batter.

"I expected that I would get a call. It was not an arrogant thought like ‘yes, I am going to get a call’. But, back of the mind, there was this hope that the long wait would end. When I saw the squad, and my name was not in it, I was a little disappointed. From my side, I was trying to do everything. I took my wife to the beach for walks, and missed a few practice sessions, as I was thinking about that (not being selected) only,” he added.

He further stated, "One day, Mahela and Zak came up to me, and said that this was the perfect opportunity to prove myself as it was MI vs RCB. I said, ok, but back of the mind, I was lost and disappointed. I didn’t know what was happening even as the trainers and captain were speaking to me."

Mumbai released some match-winners such as Hardik Pandya, Krunal Pandya, Trent Boult, Rahul Chahar, Quinton de Kock, were released. Although, it was reported that Hardik opted to go in the auction pool.

Meanwhile, Vettori explained the possible reason why Mumbai Indians didn't retain Hardik Pandya or why the all-rounder might have wanted to go back in the auction pool.

In a conversation with ESPNCricinfo, Vettori said, "It's simply about money, it has to be. There's no way that Mumbai [Indians] didn't want Hardik Pandya, every franchise wants him. But they would have only been able to offer him that third spot because and Bumrah and Rohit rightly take up those two slots."

He added, "So unfortunately for Mumbai, they are the product of their own success. And this was Venky's point when we were discussing with him that you develop players and you get them to a point where they are critical to a franchise but then it's incredibly difficult to hold onto them."

MS Dhoni to Rohit Sharma: Complete list of reported retentions for all 8 franchises ahead of IPL mega auction

Mumbai Indians (MI) face one of the trickiest challenges as the deadline day for Indian Premier League (IPL) retentions approaches. With one of the best squads at their disposal, the five-time champions will have to do intense brainstorming to select the four players they want to retain ahead of the mega auction. Each of the existing eight teams can retain a maximum of four players each.

The total purse allotted to all ten franchises will be Rs 90 (INR 900 million), out of which Rs 42 crore (INR 420 million) will be deducted if a franchise decides to retain four players. MI are one of the teams who might consider utilising all four slots for retentions with an incredible amount of talent in their existing squad.

Former Mumbai Indians pacer Mitchell McClenaghan recently picked one player between the likes of Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, Hardik Pandya and Krunal Pandya, who he feels the franchise should definitely retain. While captain Rohit Sharma and fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah are likely to be the first two retentions for MI, it remains to be seen who will take the other two slots.

Responding to a question from ESPN Cricinfo on Twitter, McClenaghan said MI should retain Hardik if they had the choice to keep only one player between Suryakumar, Ishan, Hardik and Krunal. "Clearly Hardik. It's not even a question - there is a severe lack of Indian all-rounders and finishers. No one on that level yet," McClenaghan, a four-time IPL winner with MI, wrote on Twitter.

However, as per reports, Hardik is unlikely to be retained by Mumbai Indians and is not on their list of priorities. West Indies all-rounder Kieron Pollard along with young wicket-keeper batter Ishan Kishan are reportedly set to be retained by the Rohit Sharma-led side.

If released, Hardik might be roped in by one of the two new teams - Ahmedabad and Lucknow ahead of the mega auction. And if he goes into the auction pool, the Indian all-rounder is likely to trigger a bidding war among franchises.

Ishan, Suryakumar, Hardik or Krunal? Former Mumbai Indians pacer picks one player franchise should retain

Former India pacer Irfan Pathan recently named four players he feels Mumbai Indians (MI) should retain ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) mega auction. The deadline for the existing eight franchises to submit their final list of retentions is November 30. Each of the eight teams has been allowed a maximum of only four retentions with no right to match option in the auction this time around.

While reports have confirmed about some franchises having made up their minds on who to retain and whom to let go, there has been no official word from any of the eight teams yet. Five-time champions Mumbai Indians, who are the most successful team in the history of IPL, have a star-studded squad at their disposal and are set to face a tricky situation as far as their four retentions are concerned.

Pathan recently picked the four players he thinks MI should retain ahead of IPL 2022. The former pacer picked captain Rohit Sharma as the first-choice retention followed by ace fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah. He also backed West Indies all-rounder Kieron Pollard to be retained by the side considering his all-round abilities and experience over the years.

Pathan picked Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya as his fourth-choice retention for Mumbai Indians. Despite his recent form being questionable and doubts over his bowling in the long-term, Pathan feels MI should not let go of Hardik, who can be a match-winner with both the bat and the ball on his day.

“Among overseas players, it will be Kieron Pollard. No doubt about that; at least in my mind. I don’t know what Mumbai Indians are thinking. He is the guy that has won you games for so many years and consistently. His batting is still top-notch and is still the powerhouse when it comes to big-hitting as well as finishing the games," Pathan told Star Sports.

"So, Pollard will definitely be on the radar. I would definitely go for Kieron Pollard, Hardik Pandya. I can actually name the other two guys as well. No. 1 would be Rohit Sharma and No. 2 would be Jasprit Bumrah," he added.

Pathan also said young wicket-keeper batter Ishan Kishan could be one of the retentions for Mumbai Indians. However, he snubbed the likes of Trent Boult and Suryakumar Yadav among others, who have been vital cogs of the Mumbai Indians line-up over the last few years.

While Suryakumar has been one of the most consistent batters for the side, Boult has been exceptional since joining the five-time champions in the 2020 season. It remains to be seen who will Mumbai Indians keep and who will they let go of ahead of the mega auction.

No Suryakumar, Boult! Irfan Pathan names 4 players Mumbai Indians might retain ahead of IPL 2022

November 30 is the deadline for the existing eight franchises of the Indian Premier League to submit their final list of retained players ahead of the mega auction. The auction will be conducted ahead of the IPL 2022 season with the addition of two new franchises - Lucknow and Ahmedabad. Each of the existing eight teams have been allowed a maximum of only four retentions this time around with no right-to-match option.

As all eight teams continue to finalise their retentions ahead of the mega auction, Delhi Capitals (DC) are all set to part ways with Shreyas Iyer. Iyer had earlier expressed his desire to be released by the franchise as he is keen to get a leadership role elsewhere after being replaced as captain of the Delhi Capitals by Rishabh Pant. Thus DC, who wanted to retain him, are likely to release him now.

As per a report in The Telegraph, Iyer and his Delhi Capitals teammate Shikhar Dhawan, who is also set to be released are being pursued by the two new teams - Ahmedabad and Lucknow. The report further states that even Mumbai Indians are keen on roping in Iyer ahead of the new season. The five-time champions are planning to pick him up at the mega auction.

If Iyer is roped in by one of the two new teams, Mumbai Indians will not be able to get him at the auction. However, if he remains available in the auction pool, there is set to be a bidding war for the star batter, who recently struck an impressive century on his Test debut in the ongoing Kanpur Test against New Zealand.

Iyer has so far played 87 matches in his IPL career and has 2375 runs to his name at an average of 31.66 and a strike rate of over 123.

Who will keep whom? List of players likely to be retained by CSK, KKR, DC and MI ahead of IPL mega auction

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 edition is far away. However, the excitement of the cricket fans knows no boundaries as the mega auction ahead of the next season is likely to take place in January 2022. Ahead of the mega auction, the eight existing franchises are set to share their list of retained players very soon.

As per a report, the five-time winners Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai Indians (MI) are unlikely to retain their star batsman Suryakumar Yadav. As per the rules, every franchise can retain a maximum of four players (either three Indians and a foreign player or two Indians and overseas players each). Hence, MI are likely to let go off SKY. For the unversed, the right-hander has been one of the most important players for the Men in Blue since the 2018 season (when he returned to the MI line-up ahead of the 11th edition).

While MI can always reacquire the services of SKY from the auction pool, the two new IPL teams -- of Ahmedabad and Lucknow -- will like to make the most of their chances as they can sign three cricketers each among the non-retained players before the auction.

Mumbai Indians unlikely to retain star batsman ahead of mega auction for IPL 2022: Report

The star all-rounder Hardik Pandya of the Mumbai Indians might not get retained by his current franchise as he is likely to be sent back into the Indian Premier League auction pool, media reports have suggested. The five-time champions will have to make some difficult choices to make in the upcoming mega auction that is likely to happen in December. A recent report has also suggested that teams will be able to retain a maximum of four players.

After the addition of two new teams — Lucknow and Ahmedabad — the narratives of the tournament has been changed. The two new franchises reportedly can acquire three players from the rest of the player pool before the 2022 auction.

Now, talking about the Mumbai Indians team, the news is not good if reports are to be believed as it has been stated that MI will not retain him. As per the report, the top three players who will be retained are skipper Rohit Sharma, India's pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrsh and West Indies star Kieron Pollard.

"I think BCCI will have three-player retention formula with one Right to Match card. If RTM is not there, there could be four retention," PTI reported citing a senior IPL official, who is tracking the retention market of franchises.

"Rohit Sharma and India's pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrsh are automatic picks. Kieron Pollard will be third retention. MI's strength is their continuity as these three are pillars of MI," the official added.

"At this point in time, there is less than 10 per cent chance that Hardik will be retained by MI. If there are four retention or 1 RTM, then Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan are the contenders for that slot," the official added.

IPL auction: Hardik Pandya unlikely to be retained by Mumbai Indians - Reports

Mumbai Indians (MI) had a disappointing campaign in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 as the Rohit Sharma-led failed to make it to the playoffs. MI were ousted from the tournament on the final day of the league stage of IPL 2021 despite registering a 42-run win against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in their last league game. MI might have endured a poor season this year but they remain the most successful team in the history of IPL with five titles to their name.

In a video shared by Mumbai Indians on Monday (October 18), skipper Rohit Sharma reflected on his journey with the franchise and insisted last season won't take away anything from the team's success in the past. Mumbai Indians won the IPL title in successive seasons in IPL 2019 and 2020 before faltering this year to finish fifth on the points table.

"Yes, it was an unfortunate season for us. We are a little disappointed with that but nothing to take away from what we have done in the past and all of those efforts. You are bound to have a season like that where things will not go the way you want to but that doesn't change the quality and the potential of the team," Rohit said in the video.

Rohit also gave some insights on Mumbai Indians' chances to retain their core group of players, admitting that it will be almost impossible for them to have all the players in their current squad back. Rohit said he is aware that MI might not have the same squad for IPL 2022, considering two new teams will be added to the tournament from the next season with a mega auction set to take place.

"We won't have the same squad, unless some miracle happens. It will be hard not have all of them as part of the same group next year. But, hopefully, we can get the same core group of players and create a magical couple of years," Rohit said.

MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) completed an incredible turnaround in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 as they went on to lift their 4th title after defeating Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the final on Friday. CSK had finished a lowly seventh and missed out on a spot in the playoffs last season but bounced back strongly to win the trophy this year.

One of the most successful teams in the history of IPL, CSK proved why they are one of the best sides to have graced the league with a stupendous performance throughout the season. Despite getting off to a good start with their openers Shubman Gill (51) and Venkatesh Iyer (50) posting a 91-run stand for the opening wicket, KKR crumbled under pressure and lost wickets in quick intervals to give away the game. Their middle-order failed to deliver as CSK bowlers ran riot to ensure a comprehensive win for Dhoni's Yellow Army.

Mumbai Indians (MI) came close to sealing a spot in the IPL 2021 playoffs on the final day of the league stages but fell short at the end to suffer an early exit from the competition. Rohit Sharma & Co. needed to win by a massive margin of 171 runs against SRH in their final league game to qualify for the top four but could only manage a 42-run win as they bowed out of the tournament.

Mumbai Indians managed to attain 14 points with the help of seven wins in 14 matches this season but fell short in terms of the net run rate to finish fifth. In his farewell message for the fans after MI's exit from IPL 2021, captain Rohit Sharma said the failure to make it to the playoffs cannot take away the glory Mumbai Indians have achieved in the last few seasons.

Rohit also hailed his teammates for giving the best in the tournament and called the season full of ups and downs. The defending champions had a mixed campaign and were abysmal at the start of the UAE leg before finding their rhythm towards the end of the league stages. However, they crashed out despite winning their final league game.

"A season full of ups, downs & learnings. But these 14 matches won’t take away the glory this incredible group achieved over the last 2-3 seasons. Every player who don the blue & gold played with pride & gave his best. And that’s what makes us the team we are! ONE FAMILY @mipaltan," Rohit wrote in his tweet.

14 matches in IPL 2021 won't take away the glory MI have achieved in last 2-3 seasons: Rohit Sharma

Mumbai Indians (MI) failed to make it to the playoffs in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 despite a late surge in the UAE leg of the tournament. MI won their last two league games of the season comprehensively but fell short in terms of the net run rate to finish outside the top four and make an early exit from the competition.

Mumbai Indians will be looking to revamp their squad and make some quality additions in the upcoming mega auction ahead of the 2022 edition of the league. The franchises are likely to get a limited amount of retentions ahead of the mega auction and they will have to be wise in making the final decision on who to retain.

Mumbai Indians have a number of match-winners in their ranks and will be looking to retain some of their best players before the mega auction. They had retained captain Rohit Sharma, all-rounder Hardik Pandya and pacer Jasprit Bumrah the last time around.

However, former India opener Virender Sehwag believes Hardik should not be MI's first-choice retention this time around. Sehwag, who led Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings in the IPL, named three players who MI should retain ahead of the new season and snubbed Pandya from the list.

"I think I would retain Ishan Kishan, Rohit Sharma, and Jasprit Bumrah. Ishan seems to be in it for the long haul, age is on his side so he can serve you better. If Hardik Pandya doesn't bowl, I don't think he would be able to fetch big money at the auction because due to his injury concerns, everyone would think twice," Sehwag said.

Sehwag's comments came after Kishan took the Sunrisers Hyderabad bowlers to the cleaners in MI's final league game of the season. The young left-hander slammed a brilliant 84 off just 32 balls to power MI to a 42-run win. Sehwag believes MI should retain Kishan over Hardik as he is a top-order batsman and offers more value.

Sehwag also pointed out concerns regarding Pandya's bowling. The all-rounder didn't bowl a single ball in the UAE leg of IPL 2021 and has been struggling with his fitness to return to full-time bowling as an all-rounder.

"Will he bowl or not? If he can declare himself fit and start bowling then teams can buy him at the auction. The kind of performance Ishan Kishan has dished out today, expect many more from him in time to come because is a top-order batsman, unlike Hardik Pandya who bats lower," said Sehwag.

No Hardik Pandya! Virender Sehwag names 3 players Mumbai Indians should retain ahead of IPL mega auction

Mumbai Indians (MI) star Ishan Kishan was in splendid touch as he took the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) bowlers to the cleaners in his side's final league game of the IPL 2021 season on Friday (October 08). The left-hand wicket-keeper batsman slammed a brilliant knock of 84 runs off just 32 balls as he powered Mumbai Indians to their highest ever total of 235 runs against SRH.

Kishan opened the batting with captain Rohit Sharma at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in UAE and had come with the intent of taking on the bowlers from the word go. He wasted no time in launching an all-out attack against the SRH bowlers and gave MI a flying start.

After his stellar show as an opener against SRH, Kishan opened up on his chat with team India skipper Virat Kohli regarding his selection in the squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2021. Kishan, who was enduring a rough patch in IPL 2021 before finding his mojo back in the last couple of games, revealed Kohli supported him during his poor run with the willow and also gave him clarity about his role in the Indian side for the T20 World Cup.

“I had a good chat with Virat bhai, Jasprit bhai also helped me. Hardik Pandya and Krunal Pandya also supported me. Everyone supported me and said this is a learning stage for me and make sure that I should learn from my mistakes here and not repeat it during the T20 World Cup,” Ishan said after his match-winning knock against SRH on Friday.

“Virat bhai told me ‘You are selected as an opener, you just have to be prepared for that. But at the bigger level, you need to be prepared for everything,” he added.

Kishan has been assured by captain Kohli that he has been selected in the World Cup squad as an opener in the absence of senior batsman Shikhar Dhawan, who was snubbed by the selectors. Kishan is likely to remain the backup opener in the side with Rohit and KL Rahul expected to be India's first-choice opener in the T20 World Cup in UAE this year.

Nonetheless, Kishan's return to form will please Indian fans, who have high hopes from the youngster at the T20 World Cup this year. Known for his ability to destroy bowling attacks with his attacking batting, Kishan has played only ten games for MI this season and has notched up 241 runs, striking at 133.88.

Ishan Kishan to open? What Virat Kohli told MI star after his selection in India's T20 World Cup squad

Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma shed light on all-rounder Hardik Pandya's fitness saying that "he hasn't bowled a single ball yet", raising doubts on whether he would retain his place in the Indian squad for the ICC T20 World Cup beginning in a week's time.

Pandya batted against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Friday, scoring 10 runs off eight deliveries before he was sent packing by Jason Holder. The all-rounder did strike an unbeaten 30-ball 40 in Mumbai Indians' six-wicket win over Punjab Kings on September 28 to break the five-time champions` losing streak, but it's his bowling fitness which is causing concern ahead of the mega-event.

After missing the first two matches in the second leg of the tournament in the UAE, Pandya has featured for Mumbai as a pure batsman. The all-rounder hadn't bowled in the first leg of the tournament in India as well.

"Look, in terms of his bowling, he hasn't bowled yet. So the physios, trainer and the medical team are working on his bowling. As of now, all I know is that he hasn't bowled a single ball yet but we wanted to take one game at a time and see where he stands. You saw he didn't bowl today (Friday against SRH) as well, but he is getting better day by day. So, in the next week or so he might be able to bowl," said Sharma in the post-match press conference.

"The doctor, physio will be able to give an update on that. As far as his batting is concerned, he will be a little disappointed but we know the quality of him. He is a quality player and there is no doubt about that and he has come back from tough situations before as well. But again, a player like him is probably just one innings away from getting back and getting back to his own natural way. We have seen it in the past. He has done it before as well. India have already named their squad for the T20 World Cup, which begins on October 17. While announcing the squad, chairman of selectors Chetan Sharma had said Pandya was fully fit and he would be able to bowl his quota of overs at the World Cup.

Ever since his back surgery, Hardik has been given the freedom to choose which match he wants to bowl in. The underlying reason is usually that his workload needs to be managed.

He hasn't bowled a single ball yet: Rohit Sharma opens up on Hardik Pandya's potential return with the ball

Match 55 of the IPL 2021 edition will see the defending champions and five-time winners Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai Indians (MI) face the bottom-lying Kane Williamson-led Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium, Abu Dhabi on Friday afternoon (October 8).

MI are coming into this game with a heavy task; to beat SRH by a huge margin -- by 170 runs or more -- in order to leapfrog Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and attain the fourth spot in the playoffs. For the unversed, KKR are overwhelming favourites for the remaining spot and are sitting pretty at the fourth position currently following a massive 86-run win over Rajasthan Royals (RR) on Thursday evening. KKR also have the net run-rate in their favour, hence, MI will have to beat SRH by a humongous and almost near-impossible margin to qualify further. They cannot advance further if SRH bat first.

SRH, on the other hand, are coming into this game on the back of a spirited 4-run win over the Virat Kohli-led Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at Sharjah. Having a disastrous campaign in IPL 14, SRH will be desperate to sign off on a high with another win under their belt. Jason Roy, Jason Holder, Williamson, Rashid Khan and Bhuvneshwar Kumar will continue to be their best bets versus MI, with eyes on speedster Umran Malik as well.

Match prediction for SRH vs MI clash: The batting hasn't been easy in any of the surfaces in the UAE leg. The same is expected in match 55 and a modest score will be challenging for the chasing team. Given that SRH have nothing to lose, they will look to bat first and get to a moderate score and defend it, like they did versus RCB. Meanwhile, MI will be down and out given the mammoth scenario in front of them and will be tested versus a nothing-to-lose Hyderabad line-up. SRH to sign off on a high?

MI vs SRH, IPL 2021 prediction today: Who will win Mumbai Indians vs Sunrisers Hyderabad match?

Match 55 of the IPL 2021 will see the defending champions Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai Indians (MI) face the bottom-lying Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in what will be the penultimate match of the league stage. While the MI franchise are very much on the verge of an early exit, the SRH camp will like to sign off on a high in what has been a disastrous campaign for the Orange Army.

For the unversed, MI can't qualify if SRH bat first. They need to beat the Hyderabad line-up by a whopping 171-run margin, or more, to topple Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and take the fourth spot. Hence, KKR look certain to take the fourth spot and already have one foot in the playoffs following a massive 86-run win over Rajasthan Royals (RR) on Thursday (October 7).

SRH achieved a much-needed win over Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in their last game. They will fancy their chances of batting first and scoring a modest score, which has been the norm in the UAE leg, to later defend it versus the MI camp. MI's batting has been a huge letdown, hence, they may face the pressure versus a nothing-to-lose SRH franchise.

IPL 2021, MI vs SRH, Live Streaming: When and where to watch Mumbai Indians vs Sunrisers Hyderabad?

Defending champions Mumbai Indians beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by 42 runs in a high-scoring game here on Friday but their spirited effort was not enough to take them to the IPL play-offs.

After amassing 235 for nine, MI needed to limit SRH to 65 or less to qualify for the play-offs ahead of KKR but expectedly that did not happen. SRH ended with 193 for eight with stand-in captain Manish Pandey making an unbeaten 69 off 41 balls.

It is for the first time in three seasons that five-time champions MI have not entered the last four after lifting the trophy in the past two editions.

MI needed a miracle and the script unfolded in their favour, at least in the first innings, when they opted to bat and posted a mammoth score. Ishan Kishan (84 off 32) and Suryakumar Yadav (82 off 40) struck whirlwind fifties as MI meant business from the onset.

But it was not to be for MI as they failed to restrict SRH to their desired target, even though they won the match comfortably. Even though MI and KKR ended their round-robin engagements on 14 points from as many games, the Kolkata outfit leapfrogged Rohit Sharma's side on net run rate.

Delhi Capitals and Chennai Super Kings will face each other in the Qualifier 1 on Sunday, while KKR will be up against Royal Challengers Bangalore in the eliminator on October 11.

Chasing 236, Jason Roy (34 off 21) and Abhishek Sharma (33 off 16) got SRH off to a flier, stitching 64 runs in 5.2 overs. But SRH lost their plot soon after the dismissal of the openers with Jimmy Neesham striking twice -- first accounting for Sharma and then Abdul Samad.

Pandey (69 off 41; 7x4s, 2x6s) and Priyan Garg (29) shared 56 runs for the fifth wicket before Jasprit Bumrah dislodged the stand.

Pandey played a captain's knock and kept SRH in the hunt, albeit mathematically, reaching his 50 off 30 balls.
It was always going to be an uphill task for SRH to get 70 runs off 24 balls and it turned out to be so with Pandey remaining unbeaten.

Earlier, MI openers -- Kishan and skipper Rohit Sharma (18 off 13) meant business and showed the intent from the onset.

Kishan, especially, was in a belligerent mood as he went hammer and tongs and didn't spare a single SRH bowler to bring up his fifty in just 16 balls, the fastest half-century this season. It was raining boundaries and sixes for Kishan in every over as MI raced to 78 runs in the first five overs.

It looked like child's play for Kishan as he clobbered Rashid over the deep midwicket to bring up the team's 100 in 7.1 overs.

Kishan finally departed in the 10th over when he top-edged an Umran Malik delivery to Wriddhiman Saha behind the stumps. After Kishan's dismissal, SRH pulled things back, courtesy some smart captaincy from Pandey, who replaced Kane Williamson out with an elbow niggle.

A courageous Pandey brought young left-arm spinner Sharma into the attck in the 13th over and the bowler reposed his captain's faith by removing Kieron Pollard (12) and Neesham in final two balls of the over to stand in chance for a hat-trick.

Yadav, who had not been at his best in the second leg so far, rose to the occasion when it matterd and took the onus of guiding MI innings after Kishan's dismissal.

Mumbai Indians fail to make it to IPL 2021 playoffs despite 42-run win over Sunrisers Hyderabad

Mumbai Indians headed into the game with odds stacked against them in the race for the final spot in IPL 2021 playoffs as they needed a massive 171-run win against SRH to qualify for the top four. However, their batsmen responded in a stellar fashion as they went after the SRH bowlers from the word go.

Young wicket-keeper batsman Kishan got MI off to a flyer with a sublime knock of 84 runs off just 32 balls laced with 11 fours and four sixes. Suryakumar Yadav then notched up a quickfire 40-ball 82 to power the team's total to 235/9 in 20 overs.
