The five-time winners Mumbai Indians (MI) are taking on defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) in Qualifier 2 of the IPL 2023 edition on Friday evening (May 26) in Ahmedabad. Ahead of the marquee face-off, former Indian opener Virender Sehwag opined on Rohit Sharma's batting and said that he isn't happy with MI skipper's style of approach.

<h2>'I'm not happy with his batting'</h2>

While speaking on Cricbuzz, Sehwag said, “I'm not happy with his batting. He's trying to do a lot of things. If you've already scored 30 runs in three overs, just why will you try scoring another 20 in the next over itself? If he stands there, he will keep getting loose balls. What he's doing, is, he's forcibly trying to hits fours and sixes off good deliveries. He's stepping out and getting out. If he waits, shows patience, it will reward him."

“The day he scored 57 runs, he wasn't going after the bowlers. Muralitharan says one thing, whether you're a batter or bowler, you need to have patience. So, Rohit needs to show some patience. If you're chasing 200+ score, that's a different thing. But you're batting first, give yourself time. So, I'm not really happy with his batting right now,” Sehwag further added.

Talking about Rohit, he has played some cameos and scored two half-centuries, with a total of 324 runs at 133.33, he has once again remained inconsistent. Hitman has often looked to go hard from the word go and time and again thrown his wicket after starts. In MI's must-win league stage game versus Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in a bid to qualify for the playoffs, he scored a sedate 37-ball 57 but fell flat in the Eliminator versus Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), departing for 11 (10).

Rohit does not have a good record in IPL playoffs, or knockouts. Thus, he will be desperate to go big in MI's must-win game versus GT on Friday evening. The winner will take on Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the finale on Sunday (May 28) in Ahmedabad.

'Not happy with his batting': Virender Sehwag on Rohit Sharma ahead of GT vs MI tie in Qualifier 2

Mumbai Indians (MI) went past Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in IPL 2023's Eliminator on Wednesday (May 24). The five-time winners, who entered the playoffs as the fourth-placed side, romped past LSG by 81 runs in defence of 182/8 courtesy of brilliance from young pacer Akash Madhwal and quickfire knocks from Suryakumar Yadav, Cameron Green and Nehal Wadhera.

Opting to bat first, MI rode on contributions from their main batters propelled Rohit Sharma &amp; Co. to a challenging total before Madhwal's five-for (5 for 5 in 3.3 overs), smart bowling changes and LSG succumbing to the pressure led Mumbai to Qualifier 2, where they meet defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) on Friday (May 26).

After the game, Aussie all-rounder Cameron Green -- who scored a century in MI's last game in the league stage and is churning out key wickets as well -- claimed that Rohit asked the team to focus on peaking at the right time than starting with a bang and then fading away.

“That is what he has been speaking about. You don’t want to be playing good cricket at the start and then slowing down. You want to be peaking now. Ya, and we play a nice game tonight,” Cameron Green told the broadcasters.

MI will now ride on their sublime form to challenge GT and prevent them from entering their second straight IPL final. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have already qualified for the summit clash, to be held in Ahmedabad on Sunday (May 28).

Engineer-turned-cricketer Akash Madhwal hogged all limelight for his match-winning spell of 5 for five against Lucknow Super Giants on Wednesday night in Chepauk. The right-arm seamer accounted for LSG's best batters this season, including Ayush Badoni and Nicholas Pooran of successive balls and helped Mumbai win by 81 runs.&nbsp;

Following his spell that also saw him entering record books for becoming the first bowler to pick nine wickets in two straight games in IPL, Akash revealed what this moment meant to him and how he feels about it.

Till the age of 23, Akash played with the tennis ball, and upon getting a chance to feature in the IPL, he rocked the season with his impactful bowling with the new and the old ball. While he conceded above nine per above, Madhwal has picked 13 wickets from seven games.&nbsp;

Against Lucknow on Wednesday night in Chennai, in the knockout game, Madhwal impressed one and all with this tight line and a five-for, which will be talked about for some time. Elaborating on how he felt after achieving this milestone, Madhwal while speaking to the media after the game, said,

“The wicket of Nicholas Pooran was most pleasing for me. It was planned that when a left-hander comes to bat, I’ll go round the wicket,” he said after the match.

In the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, the overseas pair of Jofra Archer and Jason Behrendorff were supposed to lead the charge; however, untimely injuries and poor form resulted in both playing limited games. Although they failed to leave an impact considering the bigger picture, they did teach Madhwal a few tricks that the Indian seamer executed well during his spells.

“When I was with Jofra (Archer), both of us were not part of the team and was bowling Yorkers with him in tandem. From Jason Behrendorff, I’m learning the knuckleball. From (Chris) Jordan, I’m learning the ball that seams up after pitching,” he added.

Meanwhile, Mumbai would require him to repeat his heroics against Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 2 on Friday in Ahmedabad.

Mumbai Indians have moved yet another step closer to the Indian Premier League (IPL) final after they beat Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Wednesday, May 24 by 81&nbsp;runs. Mumbai, five-time champions will now take on defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) on Friday in Qualifier 2 with a place in the IPL final up for grabs. <h2>MI reach Qualifier 2</h2>

Asked to chase 183 runs, LSG lost wickets on a consistent basis and looked like a shadow of themselves&nbsp;in the Eliminator clash. Kyle Mayers (18) and Prerak Mankad (3) failed to give a good start to the designated home team and were back in the pavilion before the end of the powerplay. However, a titanic collapse followed for LSG as Akash Madhwal ended with figures of 5/5 in 3.3 overs to break the back of the opposition.

Interestingly, the lack of communication was the feature of the LSG innings as there were three run outs. Chris Jordan and Piyush Chawla were also on the wickets charts as they helped MI get one better of LSG to book a date with GT in Qualifier 2. LSG quickly went from 69/2 to 101 all out and lost eight wickets in the span of 32 runs.

Electing to bat first, skipper Rohit Sharma and Ishan gave yet another brisk start to MI. The duo smashed LSG skipper Krunal Pandya for 16 runs in the third over, including two fours and a six. LSG put an end to MI's intent-filled start as Naveen-ul-Haq stepped in to dismiss Rohit for 11 off 10 balls, with Ayush Badoni taking the catch at covers.

LSG for the second consecutive season have exited the IPL at the Eliminator stage while MI will look to book their seventh IPL final. They will take on GT at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium on Friday with the winner facing CSK on Sunday.

IPL Eliminator: MI book Q2 berth after stunning one-sided win over LSG; to face GT on Friday

Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai Indians (MI) entered Qualifier 2 of IPL 2023 with a splendid 81-run win over Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the Eliminator on Wednesday (May 24) in Chennai. Opting to bat first, the five-time winners rode on Cameron Green, Suryakumar Yadav and Nehal Wadhera's quickfire knocks to post a challenging 182-8 before dismissing Lucknow for a paltry 101 in 16.3 overs.

With this win, Mumbai have booked a place in Qualifier 2 and will now fight it out with defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) to enter the final, where Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have already qualified. After guiding MI to the top three, Rohit earned praise from Little Master Sunil Gavaskar and claimed that his captaincy is underrated.&nbsp;Gavaskar pointed out that Rohit's captaincy isn't credited enough, unlike CSK skipper MS Dhoni.&nbsp;

<h2>'Rohit Sharma is underrated'</h2>

Speaking to India Today, Gavaskar said, "Of course, he is underrated. The man has won five&nbsp;titles for Mumbai Indians. Let me give you an example. (Akash) Madhwal got Ayush Badoni, bowling over the wicket. He then went round the wicket to the left-hander Nicholas Pooran."

"Not a lot of bowlers necessarily do that because if they get their rhythm going bowling over the wicket, they will stick to over the wicket even it's a left-hander, trying to leave the left-hander. But he went around the wicket and produced an absolute gem of a delivery and got the man out."

"If that had been CSK and Dhoni was the captain. Everybody would have said 'Dhoni plotted Nicholas Pooran's dismissal. This is what happens to a great extent. There is also a little bit of hype, things sometimes work out," Gavaskar further added.

Gavaskar, thus, lauded Rohit for smartly using his bowlers, especially youngster and uncapped player Akash Madhwal, who returned with 5 for 5 in 3.3 overs in MI's big win over LSG. Mumbai will now aim to enter their seventh IPL final on Friday evening against Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat.

Big teams deliver on the big stage, and Mumbai Indians, for the nth time, have proved why they are the team to fear this season. Following a very Mumbai kind of a start, where they lost several matches on the trot early on, Rohit Sharma-led side turned the tide; they deployed a more fearless approach, which saw them reaching one step closer to facing Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2023 final.

Matthew Hayden, the former CSK opener, while speaking after Mumbai vs Lucknow Super Giants Eliminator that MI won by a whopping 81 runs, said looking at MI's resurgence and how they dominated oppositions lately, Chennai would fear facing them in the finals on Sunday.

In the first half of the season, Mumbai Indians struggled to gain momentum as they lost four out of the seven games. In the next half of the tournament, MI won five out of the remaining matches and qualified for the playoffs. Facing LSG in the Eliminator on Wednesday, a team they were yet to beat until then, Mumbai thrashed them by 81 runs and cruised one step towards making the finals.

"Very special achievement, it's been a very big difference in the way MI have played in the two halves of the season. In the first 7 games, they won only three games and four losses. And in the next 7, they won 5. They have really got on a roll here. I would imagine opposition sides will be fearing MI now," Hayden told Star Sports, as quoted by India Today.

<h2>MI's form, final's history to haunt CSK - Hayden</h2>

Chennai and Mumbai are the two most successful sides in IPL history, having won four and five titles, respectively. Meanwhile, in the four previous finals between these two sides, Mumbai has come in the top three times, making them a strong contender for the title this time if they go past Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 2.

Earlier, CSK's bowling coach and legend Dwayne Bravo also jokingly echoed the same concerns about CSK fearing facing Mumbai in the finals.&nbsp;

"If they haven't already, and Mumbai Indians are not only in a position in the next game where they can qualify (for the final), that is going to send some real shivers through the spines of CSK. We have already heard that from one of their very greatest DJ Bravo. But also, Gujarat Titans, who would have they wanted to play, I don't think it would be Mumbai Indians," Hayden added.

Meanwhile, Mumbai will travel to Ahmedabad to face Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 2 of IPL 2023.&nbsp;

IPL 2023: Mumbai's late resurgence to send shivers down Chennai's spine, says ex-CSK opener Matthew Hayden

Mumbai Indians (MI) skipper Rohit Sharma's 37-ball 56 helped his team achieve a crucial win over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and it eventually proved enough for them to enter the playoffs.

The Mumbai skipper laid the foundation for his team to chase down a huge target of 201 runs in just 18 overs as they beat SRH by eight wickets. This was Mumbai's eighth win in 14 league matches and they edged RCB to clinch the fourth spot in playoffs behind Gujarat Titans, Chennai Super Kings and Lucknow Super Giants.

<h2>Rohit's record outing</h2>

The Mumbai opener hasn't had best of the seasons in Indian Premier League (IPL), having scored just 257 runs in 13 matches before the match against SRH. Rohit, however, came in form just in time and smacked second fifty of the 2023 season. With his fifty, Sharma also completed 5,000 runs for Mumbai Indians - becoming the second player in the league history behind Virat Kohli to score 5,000 or more runs for one franchise in IPL.

Virat, who has played for RCB throughout 16 seasons, leads the list with 7,162 runs, with Rohit second at 5,000 runs for MI after joining the franchise in 2011. Third on the list is Suresh Raina with 4,687 for Chennai Super Kings and MS Dhoni is on fourth with 4,507 runs also for Chennai Super Kings.

<h2>Rohit joins Virat in another milestone</h2>

The runs - 56 of them - scored by Rohit also helped him complete 11,000 runs in all T20 matches he has played - international, domestic and IPL. He now has exact 11,000 run in all T20s - second most by an Indian batsman behind Virat Kohli who has 11,864 runs to his name in all T20s.

Veteran Shikhar Dhawan is third to have most runs in T20s for India - with 9,645 runs and Suresh Raina sits fourth with 8,654 runs.

Currently, RCB stand in pole position to make the playoffs but will have to be at their fluent best against defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) on Sunday, May 21.

<h2>What is on offer for Sunday?</h2>

Mumbai, Bangalore and Rajasthan will have a decisive day on Sunday as they all could make the playoffs with a certain set of results achieved. In the early start, five-time champions Mumbai will take on Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Wankhede Stadium while RCB will play GT at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru in the final league match of the IPL 2023 season.

Currently, all three – MI, RCB and RR are on 14 points and their net run rates are -0.128, 0.180 and 0.148 respectively.

<h2>What needs to happen for MI?</h2>

Rohit Sharma’s side will have to win at any cost on Sunday evening to stand a chance to make the playoffs. A defeat will see an end to their campaign while a washout remains out of reckoning as there is no rain expected in the city of dreams. MI’s win will be academic if RCB win their contest against GT meaning they will be out of the IPL.

MI need to win by 79 runs or more and hope RCB lose to GT, this will help them boost their NRR and go better than Faf du Plessis’s side.

<h2>What will propel RCB into playoffs?</h2>

As things stand, a win will see RCB through to the playoffs with no burden of margin of win as they will end up with better NRR than MI, even if they win the earlier match against SRH. RCB can still go through with a defeat if they lose by five or fewer runs or with three balls to spare against GT; this is coupled with a small-margin win for MI.

A defeat for RCB by five runs or more will see their NRR worsen and finish fifth, so in probability RCB will have to win.

<h2>What will prevent RR's exit?</h2>

RR still have a realistic chance of making the playoffs but will need help from defending champions GT. A defeat for RCB by more than five runs or with more than three balls to spare will see RR end with better NRR but will also need MI to lose to SRH.

A win for MI will see RR’s end in the competition by the time RCB begin their final league chapter against GT.

IPL playoff scenarios: What MI and RCB need to do to clinch a place in last four? | Know More

Former India head coach John Wright and Jhulan Goswami had a special training session with the Mumbai Indians Junior Champions as they passed on their valuable knowledge across the youth. Mumbai Indians, five-time Indian Premier League (IPL) champions and the defending Women’s Premier League (WPL) champions held special training session for the boys of U-14, U-16 &nbsp;teams after the conclusion of their third MI Junior Inter-School Cricket Tournament.

<h2>Jhulan and Wright guide next generation</h2>

Post the session, Jhulan Goswami said, “It was a lot of fun. They are so intelligent. They know what to do. When I asked certain questions, they gave spontaneous responses. I was really impressed. When I was young, I was not that prompt. They understand their games really well and it is a credit to their respective coaches back home. It is creditable that Mumbai Indians are taking such initiatives for young boys and girls.”

John Wright remembered his time as India coach and spoke about how it is vital for youngsters to get opportunities like MI Junior in age group cricket. “It is really important that everyone gets the opportunity to play games of cricket in an organized way. A lot of the boys that I coached came through very hard pathways. Some of them had to fight very hard to just get a game of cricket. It is vital that youngsters get to play as much as possible.”

It took him back to his time as a schoolboy cricketer in New Zealand. “I have always enjoyed and valued working with young cricketers of all ages. We have all experienced that while growing up. It was a long time ago but you still have memories as a 12 or 14-year-old that loved the game. At that age, you play whenever and wherever you can and have dreams of representing your country. In this age, they also dream of playing the IPL. It was great to see their shining eyes and bright smiles. We just encouraged children to have big dreams, enjoy themselves and have fun.”

The talent on show impressed both Wright and Goswami who have seen the ups and downs in the game for decades.

<h2>Wright's opinion on kids</h2>

“It was very enjoyable. The kids were very enthusiastic. There were various skill levels. Some of them were of a very high standard. We tried to make it enjoyable for them. They were very enthusiastic and we emphasized a lot on the fielding. It is fielding that brings a team together,” Wright said.

The kids underwent a set of various training and fielding drills while also getting to ask their questions and interact with the two respected coaches. The girls began first, and then followed by the two boys teams.

The third edition of MI Junior was played across iconic grounds in Mumbai, Pune &amp; Nagpur and had participation of over 400 teams with close to 3500 boys and girls participating across three age groups of Boys U-14, Girls U-15 and Boys U-16. Notably, the tournament had about 16 women scorers who were accredited with the cricket associations, officiating across the matches in Mumbai, apart from that around 63 female physio’s were on the ground to look after the players and guide them through the injuries.&nbsp;

John Wright and Jhulan Goswami hold special training session for MI Junior champions

Cricketer-turned-commentator New Zealand's Simon Doull feels giving up Mumbai Indians captaincy will set Rohit Sharma free, something he needs as the IPL veteran continues to struggle for runs this season. Rohit Sharma perhaps tried everything - gave himself an extended run, dropped to number three, didn't field in one game and came as an impact player - but nothing seems to work.

Although his team has risen from the ashes following a terrible start this season, and is now on the brink of sealing a playoff berth - what earlier looked like an improbable task, Rohit's fans are aware of his dip in form.

Doull, who had faced the wrath of speaking against two top players' (Virat and Babar) strike rates earlier, has again made a bold comment on Rohit Sharma's future as MI captain.&nbsp;

Speaking as an expert on Cricbuzz, Doull said Rohit must let go of the captaincy as he's already leading India in two formats.&nbsp;

"I was a big proponent of him [Virat Kohli] giving up the captaincy of RCB, much like I am with Rohit, now that he is the captain of India. I just think this is the tournament where he needs to be free and just play,” Doull said on Cricbuzz, as quoted in India Today.

<h2>Rohit must follow Kohli's path - Simon</h2>

Explaining further what he meant, Doull said looking at how Kohli benefitted after resigning as a captain, Rohit must follow the same path as he deserves to play freely and score runs.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, former South African captain Faf du Plessis replaced Kohli, and the pair wreaked havoc this season, contributing with more than 800 runs at the top.

"When I talked about Virat and the captaincy, it was like every pressure was on him. Indian captaincy, three formats, RCB captaincy, and just to see that taken away, and it was never going to go to someone who he wasn't going to respect. So there are only two or three players in world cricket that could have gone to Bangalore and been captain,” Doull added

In 13 matches this season, Rohit has scored just 257 runs at an average of 19.77 and a strike rate of 131.12. With MI currently placed fifth on the points table with 14 points from 13 matches, they will only qualify for the playoffs if they win their final league match against SunRisers Hyderabad at home.

IPL 2023: Will giving up Mumbai Indians captaincy help Rohit Sharma find form? Simon Doull feels so

Early this month, Mumbai Indians (MI) were dealt with a major blow as speedster Jofra Archer got ruled out of the IPL 2023 edition. Archer featured in only five games for the Rohit Sharma-led franchise and accounted for a mere&nbsp;two wickets at an economy rate of 9.50. With the recurrence of stress fracture in his right elbow, he is now also out of the upcoming English summer, to miss Ashes 2023.

A lot was expected from Archer in the MI jersey. Having returned to international cricket, early this year, after almost 24 months, the 28-year-old never looked in his elements in IPL 2023, not bowling quick and looking threatening with the ball. After his return home, as the England Cricket Board (ECB) is monitoring his recovery, Little Master Sunil Gavaskar has slammed Archer left, right and centre.

<h2>'MI&nbsp;paid big money for him and what has he given in return?'</h2>

Gavaskar wrote in his column for Mid-Day, "What has been Mumbai Indians experience of Jofra Archer? They took a punt on him knowing that he was injured and would be available only from this season. They paid big money for him and what has he given in return? He didn't seem 100 per cent fit and he should have informed the franchise about it. They only realised when he turned up and found that he was barely able to bowl at his usual pace. "

He further opined, "In between the tournament, he went abroad for treatment which is what his country's cricket board apparently said. So he was never fully fit, but still came over. If he was committed to the franchise, who probably pay him more than the ECB does, he should have stayed right till the end even if he wasn't going to play and show his commitment towards the franchise. Instead, he has opted to fly off back to the UK."

<h2>'This has got to be the greatest diversionary trick attempted'</h2>

<h2>&nbsp;</h2>

Gavaskar added, "A day later, a story appears that he is going to get a multi-million-pound deal with Mumbai Indians to play for their team in the various leagues in the world. This has got to be the greatest diversionary trick attempted. Mumbai Indians are not fools to sign a lame horse for any future race. Make no mistake, Mumbai Indians won't be amused at the turn of events and now that they have come back well in the tournament without his presence, he will be lucky if he gets his full fee for the IPL and if he does then he would do well to give half to his favourite charity."

"There's simply no point paying even one rupee for a player, however big a name he may be, if he is not going to be available for the entire tournament. It's got to be the player's choice to pick playing for an IPL franchise or his country. Full marks to him if he chooses country over IPL, but if he chooses IPL then he has to fulfil his commitments totally and not make some excuse and leave early, especially towards the time when qualifying for the Playoffs becomes crucial."

Archer's career has been marred with injury concerns. After being a part of England's maiden ODI World Cup campaign, in 2019, his graph has only gone down.&nbsp;In 2021, a stress fracture to his right elbow halted his progress whereas it was followed by&nbsp;a stress fracture of the back in the following year. Now, Archer is running against time to fully recover and stage a comeback in the English line-up for their ODI WC defence, later this year in India.&nbsp;

IPL 2023: 'No point paying...': Gavaskar slams injured Jofra Archer, says 'what has he given MI in return?'

The IPL 2023 edition has been a huge hit. Every year, the league stage goes down to the wire. Often,&nbsp;teams are seen fighting hard for one, or more, remaining playoffs spots till the last day of the league games. This year, the defending champions, Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat Titans (GT), remain the only side to have booked a slot in the playoffs, having ensured a top-two finish as well. However,&nbsp;as many as seven franchises remain in the fray to end with the remaining three spots with only four days left in the league stage.

To date, Delhi Capitals (DC) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) remain the only two teams out of this year's edition. So far, 64 out of the 70 league games have been done and dusted -- i.e. 91.42% -- but Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Mumbai Indians (MI), Rajasthan Royals (RR), Punjab Kings (PBKS), Royal Challengers Bangalore&nbsp;(RCB), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and&nbsp;Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) are still competing to enter the&nbsp;last four.

On Wednesday (May 17), David Warner-led DC franchise defeated PBKS by 15 runs, in match 64, to not only take Shikhar Dhawan &amp; Co. closer to early elimination but further complicate the playoffs race.

Here's what remaining seven teams have to do to grab the&nbsp;three available playoff tickets and join Hardik-led GT -

Chennai Super Kings: MS Dhoni's Yellow Army will confirm a place in the last four with a win over DC in their last league game on Saturday (May 20) in New Delhi. They can even progress ahead without adding to their points tally (15) if&nbsp;RCB or MI lose at least one of their remaining games.

Lucknow Super Giants:&nbsp;Krunal Pandya's LSG won a crucial home game, on Tuesday (May 17), versus MI. Thus, they are also in a safe position compared to other teams. A win will confirm a playoff berth for them and they can even go ahead with a loss but will need MI or RCB to lose one game, at least.&nbsp;

Mumbai Indians: The five-time champions will secure a berth in the last four with a win over&nbsp;SRH in their last match and if RCB lose at least one of their last two league fixtures.

Royal Challengers Bangalore: The Virat Kohli-starrer RCB can go ahead with wins in their remaining two games. If the three-time runners-up lose one, it will help CSK and LSG -- as stated above -- but the Bengaluru-based team will have to depend on how MI, KKR, RR, and PBKS fare in their last match. As of now, they have a healthy Net Run Rate (NRR) than MI, RR, KKR and PBKS at +0.166.

Rajasthan Royals: The Sanju Samson-led Royals have certainly lost the plot after a brilliant start (with four wins from their first five fixtures). They are left with one more game, versus PBKS on Friday (May 19) in Dharamshala. If they earn a massive victory and MI, RCB and KKR lose their remaining games, they can still enter the playoffs.

Kolkata Knight Riders: The two-time winners still have an outside chance to feature in the last four. If they get the better of LSG by a handsome margin, they can move past MI and then hope for MI and RCB to&nbsp;lose&nbsp;their remaining encounters. Their journey to the playoffs is more complicated as they will still have to rely on the outcome of the PBKS-RR face-off. For Rana &amp; Co.'s progression, they will pray for Punjab's close win over the Royals or for the game to end in a draw.&nbsp;

Punjab Kings:&nbsp;Punjab have made life much difficult for them with a loss to Warner &amp; Co. in Dharamshala. They, however, remain alive in the playoffs race by the barest of margins. They need to beat RR convincingly and hope for the likes of&nbsp;MI, RCB, and KKR to concede their remaining games.

If this happens, MI and PBKS will end at 14 points each whereas&nbsp;RCB, KKR, and RR will finish&nbsp;dozen points apiece. Thus, NRR will come into play between Mumbai and Punjab for one to join the playoffs.&nbsp;

Currently, GT are set to play the Qualifier 1, in Chennai. The likes of CSK and Lucknow have a great chance to join the last four whereas one among MI and RCB is likely to make the cut as well. Nonetheless, IPL 2023 has pulled off some big surprises already and, hence, anything is possible in the remaining four days of the league games.

On Thursday (May 18), the Faf du Plessis-led Bengaluru franchise will lock horns with the bottom-ranked SRH in Hyderabad in match 65.

Needless to say, all other teams will also have an eye on the encounter.

EXPLAINED: IPL 2023 - Playoffs qualification chances of 7 teams for remaining 3 spots

Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai Indians (MI) lost to the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) by five runs as they failed to chase down a 178-run target in match 63 of the IPL 2023 edition on Tuesday (May 17), in Lucknow. Opting to bowl first, MI had reduced LSG to 35 for 3 before Marcus Stoinis' 47-ball 83* helped his side post a competitive 177 for 3. In reply, Rohit-Ishan Kishan's 90-run opening stand led to Mumbai's strong start before they lost the plot in the second half of their run-chase to lose by five runs, managing only 172 for 5.

During MI's opening stand, Rohit started on a positive note. He looked in his elements and smacked few biggies. He welcomed LSG's impact substitute Yash Thakur, in the fourth over, with a huge six courtesy of his trademark pull. Here's the video of Rohit dancing down the track to smash a huge six towards deep mid-wicket -

Despite MI's strong start, they lost the plot once Ishan and Rohit departed. The MI captain was the first to get dismissed as he fell for a promising 25-ball 37 whereas Ishan departed for 59 (39). At the post-match presentation, Rohit said, "We didn't play well enough to win the game. There were little moments in the game that we didn't win unfortunately. We assessed the pitch really well and it was a good pitch to bat on and that score was definitely chaseable and we lost our way in the second half of the innings. We gave too many runs at the back end and the last three overs went for a few. Match 63 of the IPL 2023 edition saw the Krunal Pandya-led Lucknow Supr Giants (LSG) beat Mumbai Indians (MI) by five runs in a crucial clash with the race for the playoffs getting intense with each passing game. Lucknow, who were asked to bat first, were off to a poor start as they were reduced to 12 for 2, and further to 35 for 3, before Aussie all-rounder Marcus Stoinis blasted an impressive 47-ball 89 not out to take his side to a competitive 177 for 3.&nbsp;

At the post-match presentation, Player-of-the-Match Stoinis said, "Great moment. He hasn't played here from a long time, a big moment for Mohsin, especially bowling the final over after being injured. It was very close, there are a lot of things not going your way. We are missing KL (Rahul), but we have KP (Krunal) leading us, and Andy (Flower) has a really good cricket brain."

LSG occupy the third spot in the points table with 15 points from 13 games and will hope to ensure a top-two finish with a win in their remaining league game.

LSG occupy the third spot in the points table with 15 points from 13 games and will hope to ensure a top-two finish with a win in their remaining league game.

Suryakumar Yadav had a slow start to IPL 2023 edition but has rapidly shifted gears since then. He started the season with scores of 15, 1, 0, 43, 7 before coming to his own and has hit strokeful knocks of 57, 23, 55, 66, 26, 83 and 103* as he sits at the fifth position in the list of batters with most runs in IPL 2023, with 479 runs at a strike rate of&nbsp;190.84 along with one century and four fifties. He has been one of the main reasons for MI's comeback as Rohit Sharma &amp; Co. occupy the third spot in the points table and have a real chance of ending in the top two.

Ahead of MI's crucial face-off versus the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), in match 63 of IPL 2023 on Tuesday (May 16), dashing former Indian opener Virender Sehwag urged MI to make in-form SKY a permanent at No. 3 spot in the batting order. Surya started the season at No. 4 before taking the No. 3 spot in MI's seven-wicket win versus Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), at home, in match 22 (where he was the stand-in captain). He batted at No. 4 in the following game before once again coming one down since the last two fixtures.&nbsp;

"SKY can be the permanent No. 3 for Mumbai Indians because he's a good player of pace and spin. Although it all boils down to the team management (when it comes to taking such decisions), but I strongly believe he should get to face more balls," Sehwag said on Star Sports' Cricket Live.

Since SKY has returned with 83 (35) and 103* (49) in his last two outings at No. 3, he&nbsp;seems likely to continue in the same position in the upcoming games.

Further, MI's former legend Harbhajan Singh opined on Rohit &amp; Co.'s playoff chances and said, "Mumbai Indians has once again proven&nbsp;that&nbsp;it is a champion side and knows how to come back strongly. People weren't counting this MI after it was on a losing streak in the first phase of the competition, but once it returned to the winning ways, there was no stopping this side. IPL 2023: Virender Sehwag urges MI to make Suryakumar Yadav permanent at No. 3

Two-time World Cup winner Piyush Chawla is making headlines with his stellar performances in the ongoing IPL 2023 for Mumbai Indians. The out-of-favour India leg-spinner made inroads this season by picking the bulk of wickets in almost every inning, and as things stand, is third on the list of highest wicket-taker this time with 19 scalps from 12 matches played.

Even against the defending champions Gujarat Titans the other night at Wankhede, Piyush returned with figures of two for 36 in four overs, picking two power hitters in Vijay Shankar and Rahul Tewatia.&nbsp;

Speaking to Jio Cinema after the game that Mumbai Indians won by 27 runs, Piyush said he wanted to make a comeback after remaining unsold in the last season as the urge was still there. Elaborating on his road to return, Piyush said the Gujarat Cricket Association and former keeper-batter Parthiv Patel helped him a lot.&nbsp;

Piyush added, though earlier he never used to attend the camps, this time he did; and following his successful spell in domestic cricket, where he picked 16 wickets across Vijay Hazare Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Mumbai Indians brought him on board.

All the hard work seemed to have paid off as his bowling has helped Mumbai gain momentum after a jittery start to the season, and they are now closer to a playoff berth.

"Well, I just wanted to make a comeback because that urge was there to play. Earlier, I never used to go to all the camps, but this year I attended all the camps. Gujarat Cricket Association helped me a lot, and Parthiv Patel helped me a lot. After that, I played in all the tournaments, DY Patil, Mushtaq Ali, and Vijay Hazare. I wanted to bowl in the matches, at the nets I have bowled enough," Piyush said while speaking on Jio Cinema.

Adding on what this means to him, Piyush revealed another reason for him to make his comeback was his son. The leg-spinner said because his son had never watched him play live he wanted to return and perform for him.&nbsp;

"It means a lot (this season) because it's not only about the comeback. I wanted to play for my son as well because he had not seen me playing. When he saw me, he was too young. Now he has started understanding it better although he is still 6. But he really follows the game and understands the game. So I really wanted to play the game and do something special for him," Piyush added.

Mumbai Indians batter Suryakumar Yadav scored his maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) century in match 57 against Gujarat Titans and helped his team get two crucial points from the win.

The swashbuckling batsman had come into the IPL 2023 on the back of three golden ducks in the three-match ODI series against Australia and took time to get going but seems like to have hit his purple patch in the last few matches.

MI skipper Rohit Sharma also acknowledged the confidence batsman has and revealed how SKY decided to go against the left-right combination Rohit wanted to use.&nbsp;

"Honestly, it's just the confidence Surya has got. At the start of the tournament, we were debating if we need a left-right combination, Surya said no, 'I want to go in'," said Rohit.

"That's the kind of confidence he brings and it rubs off on the guys who are batting with him. There's no looking back. Good thing is every game he's wanting to start fresh. Which is nice for a cricketer to think like that. Sometimes you can sit back and be very proud about it, but that's not the case with him," added the MI skipper further.

Notably, Surya didn't have a great start to IPL 2023 as well, having scored 15, 1, and 0 in the first three games for Mumbai. He managed to score 43 in the fourth match of the season for MI, but got seven in the next.

It was his innings against Punjab Kings, where he scored 57 in the sixth match of the season, that he got his form back. In the six matches after scoring a fifty against PBKS, Surya has scored 50+ scored four times and converted his last 50 into a ton - 103 off 49 to be precise with 11 fours and six sixes.

In total, Suryakumar has scored 479 runs this season so far, at an average of 43.55 and a whooping strike rate of 190.84.

IPL 2023: MI skipper Rohit reveals Surya defied his suggestion on batting order at the start of season

There is no stopping Suryakumar Yadav.

The ranked-number-one T20I batter in the world is having the time of his life in IPL 2023, and following his recent headline-making inning against Gujarat Titans, Suryakumar must be on cloud nine. Playing a crucial home game against the defending champions GT, Suryakumar was at his brutal best, scoring his maiden IPL hundred as he remained unbeaten on 103* off 47 balls in the first innings.

A knock that saw him hitting 11 fours and six super sixes, some of which left everyone spell-bounded, including the commentators, SKY, as most fans call him, continued his dream run after a jittery start in this season.

Tom Moody - the former Aussie all-rounder, was in awe of his inning, much like everyone else, and called it a genius. Speaking to ESPNcricinfo after the game, Moody said the way Surya plays, he makes every bowler look clueless as they run out of options on where to bowl to him.

Sharing his thoughts on SKY's inning, Moody said the way Surya manipulates the field, he puts the pressure on the bowler and the opposition captain.

“Genius! That’s the only way that you can describe his batting in this format. He is a pure genius. The way he manipulates the fields, the way conducts where he wants the bowlers to bowl, the pressure he puts on the bowlers and the opposition captain,” Moody said.&nbsp;

He also said that Surya’s ability to pick the length is impeccable, and with the variety of shots he has under his sleeves, it makes him such a dangerous batter.&nbsp;

“He has got them in the palm of his hand. If you look at that last shot, you can read the play. You sort of sense that he was going to do that, and the bowler also might be thinking that he might sweep this. But he had just hit the bowler for a six straight over mid-off. He has got so many answers for so many deliveries. He is almost impossible to bowl to,” Moody added while talking highly of Suryakumar Yadav.

Thanks to his maiden IPL hundred, Mumbai posted another 200-plus-total on the board and had GT's back against the wall inside the 12th over. However, an unlikely onslaught from Rashid Khan put GT in a commanding position, they still fell shy of the target by 27 runs.

Former India head coach and commentator Ravi Shastri has backed ex-Mumbai Indians star Hardik Panyda when he makes his return to the Wankhede Stadium with Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Friday, May 12. Hardik, who won four titles with MI will look to get one better on his former side as the skipper of the defending champions. GT are top of the pile in the IPL standings and look good to make the playoffs while they can dent MI's chances with a win on Friday.

"Hardik's homecoming will be emotional. He will play a crucial match against the team at the ground where he rose to stardom. Hardik would like to prove a lot by leading his team to victory. This match will be really interesting as it will not be easy for GT to beat MI at their home and then MI would like to equalize the defeat in Ahmedabad and take a strong step towards the playoffs," Ravi Shastri said on Hardik’s return to Wankhede Stadium.

Hardik has enjoyed a stellar spell at GT having led them to the IPL title in 2022 and is well on course for another shot. They currently sit top of the league standings with 16 points with a win all but confirming GT’s passage into the playoffs. A win at the Wankhede Stadium will see Hardik’s side make the top two, which will give them an opportunity to make the final on two occasions.

If GT are to make the final of the IPL, they will have the opportunity to defend the title at their home. The final of the IPL 2023 will be played at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday, May 28.

Interestingly, Hardik could also become the first player to win two back-to-back IPL titles, having previously achieved the milestone with Mumbai Indians in 2019 and 2020 respectively. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) remain the only other team to achieve the accolade in 2010 and 2011.

IPL 2023: Ravi Shastri backs former MI star Hardik on Wankhede return, says 'homecoming will be emotional'

Mumbai Indians star man Jofra Archer is set for a bumper deal of Rs 10 crore as the franchise tries to implement the year-round policy. According to the latest reports on Thursday, the report suggests MI is to fork out a considerable sum that will see England Cricket Board (ECB) seek permission from the franchise to take him international duties. The 2019 World Cup winner recently left the MI camp with an elbow issue and will continue his rehabilitation in England.

A report released by The Daily Mail on Thursday suggests Archer will be offered a year-round contract, where the ECB will have to seek permission from MI to use him for international services. If the report is to be true, the player will earn Rs 10 crore despite having an injury-plugged reign at the helm of five-time champions.

The deal could force ECB to hand multi-year deals to English players to lure off interest created by big-money contracts from the Indian Premier League (IPL). Alex Hales is another player who is on the books of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and could be offered year-round. Despite being part of the team furniture, Hales pulled out of the services for the franchise this season.

For Archer, the player is focused on giving his best shot to make the Ashes squad while the ODI World Cup also remains a primary target.

"Archer has been recovering from right elbow surgery," an ECB statement said.

"However, pushing through the discomfort whilst recently playing, hoping it will settle, has proven challenging. Therefore, it has been agreed for him to return to the UK for a period of rest and rehabilitation to give him the best opportunity for a full recovery,” the statement further added.

"However, pushing through the discomfort whilst recently playing, hoping it will settle, has proven challenging. Therefore, it has been agreed for him to return to the UK for a period of rest and rehabilitation to give him the best opportunity for a full recovery,” the statement further added. IPL 2023: Jofra Archer set for bumper deal as MI offer year-round contract worth Rs 10 crore - Reports

Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai Indians (MI) beat Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by six wickets in pursuit of 200-run target at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai in match 54 of IPL 2023 on Tuesday (May 09). Courtesy of Suryakumar Yadav's special, 83 off 35&nbsp;balls, the five-time winners dominated the RCB bowlers to complete their third successful 200-plus chase in an IPL season.

Moreover, MI also completed the fastest 200-plus run-chase in terms of balls remaining, winning in 16.3 overs (21 balls to spare). While MI prevented RCB from posting anything over 200, their middle-order batters continued their merry run but skipper Rohit fell for 7 (8). He has only managed 191 runs in 11 games. Speaking about Hitman's poor form, former India head coach Ravi Shastri made a bold prediction.

"If they make the playoffs, a Man of the Match, I can guarantee you in one of the games in the playoffs," Ravi Shastri told Star Sports.

IPL 2023: Surya's 35-ball 83 overpowers fifties by Faf, Maxwell as MI beat RCB by six wickets

Mumbai Indians batter Suryakumar Yadav played a blistering knock of 83 runs off just 35 balls against Royal Challengers Bangalore as Mumbai chased down a 200-run target.&nbsp;

Surya came into bat at number three and took the game away from Bangalore in just about 10 overs. The batsman hit seven fours and six sixes in his innings and by the time he departed, Mumbai needed just right runs in 4.2 overs. Former India batter Sunil Gavaskar was mighty impressed with his ability to find gaps and praised him for that.

"SKY was toying with the bowlers. He gives you a feeling of gully cricket when he's batting like that. He's just gotten better with practice and hard work. His bottom hand is so powerful that he uses it to perfection. Against RCB, he started with hitting towards long-on and long-off and later agricultural shots all around the park," said Gavaskar on Star Sports' Cricket Live.

Nehal Wadhera was on the crease with Surya most of the time and the duo added 140 runs in just 64 balls to shut the doors on RCB. Wadhera remained not out on 52 off 34 and Gavaskar appreciated the young lad for his composure.

"When you are batting with SKY your confidence is boosted, but the best thing about Nehal Wadhera's innings was that he wasn't looking to play shots like SKY. The best thing about him is that his balance was superb," he said.

Speaking on his innings after the match, Surya said, "They came up with a plan here. They knew they had to bowl slow, make me hit towards the bigger boundary and not give me pace."

The batsman, however, credited his knock to the practice sessions and said that he knows the game and where his runs are. "Your practice has to be the same as to what you want to do in the matches. I do proper practice. We have open net sessions and I keep the fielders on and come out of my comfort zone ... I know my game, I know where my runs are and I don't do anything different," said Yadav.

With the win, Mumbai now sit pretty at number three with 12 points in 11 games while RCB are in seventh place with 10 points in 11 matches.

IPL 2023: Sunil Gavaskar terms Suryakumar Yadav's innings vs RCB as 'Gully Cricket'

Mumbai Indians (MI) chased down another score in excess of 200, third overall,&nbsp;in this year's IPL in match 54 when they hosted the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on Tuesday evening (May 09). Suryakumar Yadav's 35-ball 83 and Nehal Wadhera's 34-ball 52 not out propelled the five-time winners to a stunning six-wicket win, in pursuit of 200, as they now jump to the third spot in the points table.

While MI are slowly but surely coming to their best as the playoffs nears, they are sweating over captain Rohit Sharma's poor form. He has so far only managed 191 runs in 11 games, at a strike rate of&nbsp;124.83. He failed to cross the single-digit mark for the fifth time in a row after his eight-ball seven in the MI-RCB clash on Tuesday evening.

Thus, Rohit created an unwanted record with another flop show in IPL 2023. This is the first time in IPL history that the 36-year-old Hitman has failed to breach a single-digit figure in five successive matches. His last five outings has seen him return with&nbsp;scores of 2 (8), 3 (5), 0 (3), 0 (3) and 7 (8).

It is to be noted that Rohit's previous worst run was in IPL 2017. Back then,&nbsp;he kicked off&nbsp;the campaign with four single-digit scores -- 3, 2, 4 and 0. As MI have 12 points, with three games to go, and stand a real chance to enter the playoffs, they will hope for Rohit to come to his usual best sooner than later.

IPL 2023: 'Suryakumar Yadav is the...' - Sourav Ganguly in awe of MI batter after RCB tie

Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper Faf du Plessis scored yet another fifty in the Indian Premier League (IPL) - his fifth this season - but got out playing a strange shot to a catch caught &nbsp;in three attempts.

Mumbai's Cameron Green came on to bowl the 14th over of the RCB's innings and Faf tried to act cute as he premeditated to play a ramp shot and got in position quickly. While playing the shot though, Faf looked in two minds as he looked to play the ball over third man instead of fine leg but eventually played over fine leg only in a rather unbalanced way.

The substitute fielder standing there got the hands on the ball quickly but the ball popped out of his hands and then he tried again but the ball again bounced and hit the fielder's cap after which he finally caught it, ending Faf's fabulous innings of 65 off 41. Have a look at the video here:

For MI, Jason Behrendorff was the pick of the bowlers, taking 3/36 in his four overs, while Cameron Green, Kumar Kartikeya and Chris Jordan took one wicket each.

Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper Faf du Plessis scored yet another fifty in the Indian Premier League (IPL) - his fifth this season - but got out playing a strange shot to a catch caught in three attempts. Have a look at the video here: A bit of a juggle but a catch nonetheless! @mipaltan are chipping away here at Wankhede! 👏 👏 Cameron Green strikes. 👌 👌#RCB lose their captain Faf du Plessis for a fine 65. IPL 2023: Chris Jordan replaces Jofra Archer for remainder of season ahead of MI-RCB tie

Rohit Sharma has only managed 184 runs in 10 innings for the Mumbai Indians (MI) in the IPL 2023 edition. The right-hander has only managed one fifty-plus score (65) and got dismissed for cheap more often than not. The 36-year-old has looked for early runs but throwed his wicket as he has five single-digit scores in this year's IPL, with him failing to open his account in the last two encounters.

Rohit has scores of 0, 0, 3 and 2&nbsp;in his last four outings before MI gear up to host the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in match 54 of IPL 2023 on Tuesday evening (May 09). After Jos Buttler's magnificent 95, off 59 balls, in Rajasthan Royals (RR)'s shocking loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad in match 52 on Sunday evening (May 7), former New Zealand all-rounder-turned-commentator Scott Styris asked Rohit to take a leaf out of Buttler's book to regain form and rhythm.&nbsp;

Before his knock versus SRH, Buttler didn't have a great outing in his previous few games after a promising start. However, the Englishman returned to his scoring ways after taking some time in the initial overs in the RR-SRH tie in Jaipuir. Thus, Styris said on Jio Cinema on Sunday, "When you think about Jos Buttler, he is a player who knows he has the power game to comeback (after a slow start). We have been talking about it for a few games that Rohit Sharma needs to take a leaf out of that book. Exactly the innings that he should look to play. Take 20 balls and then go through the gears because Rohit Sharma is a talented man like Jos Buttler. Buttler showed maturity for Rajasthan."

Speaking about Buttler's interview with the broadcasters after his knock, Styris pointed out, "His interview was brilliant. It gave us an insight into his methodology and his thought process. He said he hadn’t quite got into his rhythm, he did not use the word form but he said he did not have rhythm with the way he had been playing in the last few games. He said he put his ego to the side and worked his way until he felt he could start going after the bowlers."

At present, Rohit-led MI occupy the sixth position in the IPL 2023 points table with five wins and equal number of defeats in ten games.

IPL 2023: 'Rohit should take a leaf out of Buttler's book' - Former NZ all-rounder on MI captain's form

Mumbai Indians' (MI)&nbsp;captain&nbsp;Rohit Sharma has been off colours in IPL 2023. He has so far only managed 184 runs in ten games at a strike rate of 126.89, along with one half-century (65). During commentary, Srikkanth took a jibe at the Indian captain Rohit and said,&nbsp;‘No hit Sharma’." The 63-year-old 1983 World Cup-winning captain added that&nbsp;he would&nbsp;have not picked Rohit in the MI XI had he been the captain of the five-time winners.&nbsp;“Not Hit Sharma". Rohit Sharma should change his name to ‘NO HIT SHARMA’, I will not even play him in XI if I was Captain of MI,” Srikkanth commented.

IPL 2023: 'Rohit should change his name to ‘NO HIT SHARMA’ - Srikkanth slams MI skipper amid his poor form

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has opened up on Mumbai Indians and India skipper Rohit Sharma’s form after the latter has been going through a tough phase of form. Rohit, who is yet to fire in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 season has been at the gunpoint of several critics with Shastri mentioning different reasons for his debacle of form. Despite criticism, Rohit continues to take charge of the MI side while he will also lead India in the upcoming World Test Championship (WTC) final in June.

"The resources that you had two or three years ago isn't quite the same. The challenges as a captain might have doubled for him. The work as a captain would have doubled as opposed to two years ago when everything was nice, set - go out there and do the job," Shastri said about Rohit's captaincy while he spoke on ESPNcricinfo.

So far in the IPL 2023, Rohit has scored&nbsp; 184 runs with only fifty to his name and clearly has been a shadow of himself. He has averaged 18.40 so far in the IPL 2023 and has been striking at 127.

Interestingly, not since 2020 has Rohit hit multiple fifties in his IPL which is another major concern for the franchise and the India skipper.

"And then comes the challenge of how do you get them [the team] going, how do you motivate that bunch, how do you create a combination, how do you see who is the best in that lot to fit in and deliver at a certain stage of the game,” added Shastri.

Commentating at IPL, Shastri also believes the dip in form has taken its toll on the captaincy of Rohit. Mumbai Indians finished bottom of the IPL in 2022 standings while the current season is an upgrade but with ups and downs. They have not been in the top four of the IPL for the entire season and will need to finish strongly to claim a playoff berth.

"If you start getting on a purple patch where you are scoring runs, the job as a captain becomes much easier, the body language on the field changes, that energy on the field is different as opposed to when you are not getting runs. You can go flat no matter who you are," Shastri said.

Mumbai Indians and Rohit will next take the field on Tuesday against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the Wankhede Stadium with a win for either side firing them to the top four.
