WPL 2024: Ellyse Perry’s all-round heroics against MI-W help RCB-W secure eliminator spot

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) Women face Mumbai Indians (MI) in Women's Premier League (WPL) penultimate group stage match on Tuesday (Mar 9). RCB need to ensure that they win the game to firmly book a place in the playoffs alongside Mumbai and Delhi.

A loss, however, will dent their chances to make it to playoff as it will then be decided on net run-rate among RCB, UP Warriorz (UPW) and Gujarat Giants (GG), given Gujarat win their last game against Delhi Capitals (DC) on Wednesday (Mar 13).

RCB had started the season with a bang by winning first two games of their campaign. They then lost track by losing two games back-to-back against DC and MI by 25 runs and seven wickets, respectively. RCB then won against UPW by 23 runs to stay in the playoff race.

Their next two matches again saw them ending on the losing side including the last match against DC - a true humdinger which RCB lost on the last ball by just one run. With six points in seven games, RCB have a chance to put aside all the upsets of the season by qualifying for the playoffs with a win.

As for Mumbai, the game offers a chance to finish on top and book a place in the final directly. If MI win the game today, they'll have 12 points to their name and will put DC under pressure to win their last match on Wednesday for a place in the final.

Overall, MI have had a great season so far, winning five games and losing just two so far in seven matches. They currently sit second on the points table behind Delhi on the basis of net run rate.

Delhi, meanwhile will be hoping for a loss to MI, which will make them favourites to finish on top in the group stage and a place in the final.

Hardik Pandya replaced Rohit Sharma as the Mumbai Indians (MI) captain, in December 2023, ahead of the IPL 2024 edition. The move shocked many as Hardik rejoined his former franchise after being traded by Gujarat Titans (GT), who won the IPL championship under him in their maiden season in 2022. Ahead of the upcoming season, many former cricketers and experts have opined on how Hardik and Rohit will have to work in tandem to ensure MI's success. Now, former England opener Nick Knight also joined the bandwagon and feels Rohit will still be a leader and help Hardik.

Talking on Sports18, Knight said, "I think a lot of it depends on Rohit Sharma's reaction to it, how he feels about it. How do I think he would react to it? Certainly, on the pitch, he would go out and play his best possible game for the team. He would realise how important his contribution is for the team."

Former Australia cricketer Tom Moody says that Hardik Pandya's biggest challenge as the Indian Premier League (IPL) side Mumbai Indians' (MI) skipper will be not allowing the pressure to enter the dressing room. Notably, Pandya will be making a return to MI after two seasons as Gujarat Titans' skipper in 2022 and 2023 seasons. The blockbuster trade also saw Pandya replacing Rohit Sharma as the Mumbai skipper.

"They (MI) expect nothing but excellence, which is what you will expect of any high-performance environment. So Hardik's challenge is managing that expectation and allowing himself and his whole team to be able to play with that freedom, without that pressure sort of filtering into the dressing room," Moody said to StarSport.

Humairaa has featured in over eight games until now in the WPL, since her debut in 2023. In the ongoing 2024 season, she has featured in clashes against UP Warriorz and Royal Challengers Bangalore, which were played in Bengaluru.

This comes after a stellar domestic season where she amassed 285 runs in 10 games to help Mumbai win the Senior Women’s T20 Trophy in November 2023. Speaking to WION’s Aditya Pimpale, she also reflected on how challenging it was for her despite numerous societal challenges and overcoming the odds.

Question: How excited are you for this season of the WPL with Mumbai Indians?

Answer: I think it has been really amazing to play in a group that is like a family where everyone takes care of each other. Mumbai Indians really feels like a second home for me because of the atmosphere we have here.

Question: Is Mumbai Indians the best place you could have been considering as you all have a very strong bond and leadership in the ranks?

Answer: If you look at the international talent there at Mumbai Indians, they are the best at what they do. At Mumbai Indians, we get to see a different set of players who have done well for their nation and the learnings are helpful for me. As a domestic player, the first WPL was really helpful for me and only Mumbai Indians could make it possible for me.

Question: You are working with Harmanpreet, a leader in her own right, talk us through that relationship.

Answer: I think just being around Harmanpreet is something really special when you have so much to learn from her. What is really special is her composure on and off the field, the calmness she shows during the match. The way she takes the game away from the opposition. Whenever she is batting, I observe her closely as there is always something to learn from her.

Question: What was it like watching Mumbai Indians beat Delhi Capitals in the opening match with five runs needed on the final ball?

Answer: I think that moment was like winning another final after we beat Delhi Capitals in a nail-biting match. They had played some brilliant cricket in the past but winning the match on the final ball was like wow, we all felt that we had won the WPL again. It is something that is not done every day in women’s cricket, but that moment from S Sajana was courageous.

Question: What are the challenges you faced during your cricketing journey and how was the support of the family?

Answer: There are relatives who questioned my parents with regards to my cricketing career. However, my parents kept those questions to themselves and did not allow them to affect my career. Even my brother and sister have been so supportive of me in helping me advance on the cricketing stage. I could not have asked for a better family to be born in — such is the support of the people around me.

WPL 2024, UP Warriorz vs Mumbai Indians Match Preview: Harmanpreet and Co search for third consecutive win

India all-rounder Hardik Pandya has returned to playing competitive cricket ahead of IPL 2024. Pandya, who suffered an ankle injury during last year’s home World Cup, appeared for his first competitive cricket match for Reliance 1 in the DY Patil T20 Cup in Navi Mumbai on Monday (Feb 26).

Following an unsavoury episode surrounding a few centrally contracted players, mainly Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer, and the BCCI officials, the concerned India cricketers have returned to on-field cricket.

While Iyer got dropped from the India squad for the final three Tests on precautionary grounds, as he continues to recover from the persistent back injury, Ishan missed all on-field action since Australia T20Is last year.

Kishan got picked in the white-ball squads for the South Africa series but upon landing in India, informed the BCCI of him remaining unavailable for an indefinite period, citing ‘mental fatigue’.

However, the Indian Cricket Board wrote to the concerned centrally contracted players, those who are neither picked for any India Team nor are getting treated at the NCA for any injury, to appear for their respective state teams in the Ranji Trophy.

After both disobeyed BCCI’s clear directives, the board re-wrote to them warning of severe implications in case of repeated fouls.

Top stars return to cricket field Following an unsavoury episode surrounding a few centrally contracted players, mainly Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer, and the BCCI officials, the concerned India cricketers have returned to on-field cricket. Meanwhile, Hardik Pandya will lead Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2024, replacing Rohit Sharma, while Kishan and Suryakumar will also feature in the competition. Shreyas Iyer will captain Kolkata Knight Riders.

Hardik Pandya returns to competitive cricket for first time since suffering ankle injury

Mumbai Indians win thriller

DC struck early with Marizanne Kapp removing dangerous Hayley Matthews for a two-ball duck. Mumbai Indians didn't let their heads drop with Yastika Bhatia taking the onus of scoring runs. MI finished the powerplay with a score of 50/1 but DC bounced back immediately with Arundhati Reddy dismissing Nat Sciver-Brunt (19) before her innings could take flight.

Yastika stitched up a crucial 56-run stand with skipper Harmanpreet Kaur to steady MI's sinking ship. Yastika (57) raised her bat after completing her half-century but lost her wicket moments after as Reddy struck once again to bag her second wicket of the night. Harmanpreet and Amelia Kerr added 44 runs to the board but Shikha Pandey used her experience to break the partnership.

She breached Kerr's defence to end her time on the crease for a score of 24. With two overs left, MI needed 22 runs to get across the finishing line. On the final ball of the second last over, Harmanpreet sent the ball flying into the stands to complete her fifty and bring the equation down to 12 runs in 6 balls. Skipper Meg Lanning handed the ball to Alice Capsey to see off the game for DC. She struck on the first ball and claimed Pooja Vastrakar's wicket.

Amanjot Kaur rotated the strike to bring Harmanpreet back on the strike. With fire in her eyes and ice in her veins, Harmanpreet picked up a boundary to bring down the equation to 5 runs in 2 balls.

Capsey had the last laugh by stealing Harmanpreet's moment of glory and ended her stay on the crease for 55 (34). With six needed to win the game, Sajana on her first delivery of the night, struck the ball sweetly with sheer power to win the game for MI.

Lanning clears intentions

"Even last year our focus was to create a good system, good routines and follow it. And it's no different this time around. These were the very things that gave us the kind of results it did last year," the 34-year-old said on the eve of the WPL opener.

"Like last year, we weren't expecting too much from ourselves or trying to do too many things. We just want to keep it very simple like last time. Be relaxed, be in the moment and keep doing the right things,” Lanning added.

Lanning will look to get the missing piece in the puzzle for the Delhi Capitals when her side starts the WPL campaign on Friday. Delhi will be one of the favourites to clinch the WPL title having topped the league standings in the 2023 season. Lanning will have the aid of Indian star Jemimah Rodrigues while the likes of Annabel Sutherland and Marizanne Kapp will also come in handy for the 2023 runners-up.

DC were beaten by Mumbai Indians in a one-sided final in Mumbai last season but will look to exact revenge in Friday’s contest. Both DC and MI play four matches in Bengaluru before they turn their attention to Delhi for the second leg of the competition.

IPL 2024 Schedule Announcement: CSK vs RCB to headline opener on March 22 in Chennai

Before the end of 2023, the Mumbai Indians (MI) franchise dropped a bomb by announcing Hardik Pandya as the captain, ending Rohit Sharma's glorious captaincy era. Hardik was brought back by the MI franchise, from Gujarat Titans (GT), in a mega trade ahead of the IPL 2024 auction. With him replacing Rohit, the move met with mixed reactions.

Two months since Hardik's appointment, MI head coach Mark Boucher opined on the team management's decision regarding the big call. Boucher stated that 'it was a purely cricketing decision' and lesser responsibilities will help Rohit enjoy as a player, following some ordinary run with the bat in the recent IPL seasons.

Speaking on Smash Sports Podcast, Boucher said, "I think it was purely a cricketing decision. We saw the window period to get Hardik back as a player. For me it's a transition phase. A lot of people don't understand in India, people get quite emotional, but you know you take the emotions away from it. I think it's just more of a cricketing decision that was made and I do think it is going to bring the best out of Rohit as a person as a player. Just let him go out and enjoy and score some good runs."

'This is an opportunity for him to step as a player'

The South African further opined, "One thing I did pick up with Ro (Rohit) is that he is a fantastic guy. I mean he's been captaining for ages and he's done really well for Mumbai Indians. Now he also leads India as well. It is that he walks into a place and there's just cameras in it and he's so busy and he hasn't had probably the best couple of seasons of late with the bat but he's done well as a captain.

"And I just thought you know when we're speaking with the whole Mumbai Indians group, we thought that maybe this is the opportunity for him to step as a player. We believe he got some great value to add and just go out there and actually enjoy it without the hype of being a captain."

He added, "He is still going to captain India so that hype's going be there but when he steps into the IPL maybe just taking that extra bit of pressure off him as a captain an maybe we get the best out of Rohit Sharma. We want to see him playing with a smile on his face, spending a bit of time with his beautiful family."

On Hardik filling the big shoes of Rohit -- under whom MI have won five IPL titles (joint-most along with Chennai Super Kings) -- Boucher said, "He is a Mumbai Indians boy. He went to other franchise, won the title in first year, ended up runner-up in his second year. So there's obviously some very good leadership skills as well."

With the likes of Rohit, Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, etc., Hardik will enjoy a lot of support when he steps on the field as the MI captain in the forthcoming IPL season.

It will be interesting to see how he responds to the challenge of replacing Rohit as the captain of a high-profile franchise. He has tasted success as GT skipper, leading them to the IPL title in their maiden season in 2022, however, captaining Mumbai will be a different experience altogether.

IPL 2024: Suryakumar Yadav undergoes groin surgery in Germany ahead of potential return to Mumbai Indians

Former Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar opened up on India's possible 2024 T20 World Cup squad after the return of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Both Rohit and Kohli have returned to the T20I setup, after the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia, for the Men in Blue's final series in the run-up to this year's T20 WC in West Indies and USA, slated to be held in June.

With Rohit and Kohli's return, it is highly likely that now the duo will take part in the mega event in mid-2024. Gavaskar feels the form of the T20 WC-bound players will be closely monitored during IPL 2024. He stated that if Rohit and Kohli perform even in five out of the 14 matches, minimum for all franchises, in IPL 2024, it can lead to their selection in the T20 WC squad.

"I feel the IPL form will be crucial because that will be the current form. The Afghanistan series is in January. The World Cup is in June. So whoever has good form in March, April and May should be given consideration first, that performance should be given consideration. Along with that, I will also say that even if Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have an ordinary IPL, but they score runs there, you cannot score runs in every match, but suppose they make good contributions in five out of 14 matches, you will have to take advantage of their experience, and you can probably pick them in the team," Gavaskar told Star Sports.

With the second edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) set to happen this year, India wicketkeeper-batter Yastika Bhatia said she is excited to wear the Mumbai Indians jersey when the tournament begins and felt she had a memorable time with the franchise last year.

Acquired by Mumbai for INR 1.5 crore in the inaugural WPL auction, Yastika made 214 runs in 10 innings, at an average of 21.4 and strike-rate of 112.04. She also affected 13 dismissals from behind the stumps as the franchise won their maiden WPL title in their home city. Yastika was also a recipient of the WPL emerging player of the season award.

“It was memorable. Nobody had an idea about how things would pan out. But the way we were welcomed into the team, we were made to feel like family. We would spend a lot of time talking about how we could improve our game.”

“I am really looking forward to the forthcoming edition of the WPL. I can’t wait to wear the Mumbai Indians jersey and go back to the ground. It’s a completely different feeling being part of MI,” said Yastika to broadcasters JioCinema.

Yastika has been a member of the Indian team across all formats since 2021 and recalled the moment when the news of a maiden call-up to the national team came. “Everyone was happy. My father and mother were in tears. They acknowledged that my efforts had paid off.”

“Even I was happy, but at the same time I was focusing on the fact that I had to help India win the series and then help the team win the World Cup. I realised that my responsibility had increased.”

Talking of her early life, Yastika said she was into various sports before cricket came calling. “I liked playing sports since childhood. I would go for swimming, karate and badminton. But I never thought cricket would become my career because academics were as important growing up. One of my neighbours used to play Ranji Trophy.”

Blow to India as Hardik Pandya to miss Afghanistan T20Is, to return during IPL 2024 - Reports

Star India all-rounder Hardik Pandya could miss the upcoming T20I series against Afghanistan as the Men in Blue prepare for their first limited-overs outing of 2024. Hardik's chances of playing in the latest Indian Premier League (IPL) season also seems to be in doldrums due the ankle injury he suffered during the ODI World Cup contest against Bangladesh. If the news is confirmed, it could be a big jolt for Mumbai Indians, who recently announced Hardik as their new captain of the mega-rich tournament.

Hardik to miss Afghanistan series?

According to a report by PTI on Saturday (Dec 23), Hardik is all but done for the Afghanistan T20I series, where he was expected to lead the side. It is reported that he won’t be 100 percent fit for the series and selectors are likely to give the captaincy to Suryakumar Yadav for the three-match series which starts on 11 January 2024.

However, with Suryakumar also injured during the South Africa series, the management might turn to Jasprit Bumrah (if available) or Shubman Gill to lead the side in absence of the senior members like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.
