Morning brief: Modi inaugurates new parliament building; Biden, Republicans reach deal to avert debt crisis

As a massive debt crisis in the United States looms, US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said on Monday (May 22) that talks with President Joe Biden to counter the threat were productive, but there was no agreement on how to raise the government's $31.4 trillion debt ceiling. McCarthy said that their staff would continue the talks and he also believes that they "can still get there".

Clashes and airstrikes were reported in Sudan's capital city Khartoum just minutes after a ceasefire between the warring factions- the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF)- started on Monday. The ceasefire, which is week-long, started at 9.45 pm (19.45 GMT), but it turned out to be similar to the other truces that have been announced and breached during the fighting.

And columnist E. Jean Carroll requested a US court judge to amend her initial defamation case in which she received $5 million in damages, to include former president Donald Trump's recent statements at a CNN town hall.

Russia said that decisions at the summit were aimed at the "double containment of Russia and China". China, on the other hand, said G7's "approach has no international credibility whatsoever".
