On the flip side, it was a tussle between Stuart Broad and Mark Wood on who makes the Playing XI as both Ollie Robinson and James Anderson were set to feature after passing their fitness tests. Broad’s experience comes in as a vital tool and was the highest wicket-taker for England in Australia in the 2021-22 Ashes. While England lost the Ashes 0-4, Broad scalped 13 wickets, more than Anderson.

This could also be his last Ashes as he nears the twilight of his career.

Moeen Ali has come out of Test retirement to replace injured spinner Jack Leach in the Ashes squad after playing last of his 64 Tests in September 2021. The all-rounder, however, has admitted that he wouldn't have done so if Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum were not the captain and coach of the England Test team.

"Probably not, no," said Moeen in response to the question when asked if he would have considered picking up the red ball again, had it not been Stokes who had asked him, reported cricket news website ESPNCricinfo.

Ali also revealed that he thought it was a joke when Stokes first asked him to play in the Ashes and he had replied with a 'lol.' Ali, however, wasn't aware of Leach's diagnosis at the time, said the report.

The off-spinning all-rounder also said that England is playing exciting cricket at the time and and he'd have liked the same kind of energy when he was playing.

"Just the fact that it's the Ashes and it's such a big series and the exciting cricket the guys have been playing," Moeen explained. "It's a kind of era I'd have loved when I was playing. It's the Ashes: to be part of it would be amazing.

"When I retired, I was done and that was the end of playing. But the unfortunate injury to Leachy meant I got a message and a call from Stokesy and Baz and Keysy (Rob Key). So let's see what happens," added Ali.

Moeen, however, made it clear that he doesn't look at this comeback as a career and more like a free hit where he's not playing for his spot.

"I don't look at it like a Test career. It is a free hit. I'm not playing for my spot. There's no pressure, really. There is pressure of the occasion and the game, but I spoke to Baz and he said he's not bothered about how I perform, which is quite nice.

"As an individual, I want to do well and contribute to winning games. All the things I ever wanted to do in Test cricket I'm going to try to do in these games. It could be dangerous, it could be not so dangerous. We'll see," said Ali.

The all-rounder also elaborated on how Stokes has told him to be just himself and be on the aggressive side with the ball as well.

"I spoke to Stokesy about how he talked to batters and he just said, 'It would be perfect for you and the way you play'. There's no question marks over any shots you play; that gives me license to play a few more rash shots I guess. Even with the ball, he's more on the aggressive side. I know I'd go for runs but he knows there's also some wicket-taking deliveries in between, which is all he cares about really," mentioned Ali.

The five-Test iconic Ashes starts from June 16 in England.

Last week, England's Test head coach Brendon McCullum, Captain Ben Stokes and managing director Rob Key held discussions on Ali’s inclusion in the team. The trio had requested Ali to&nbsp;return to the Test-fold, having initially announced retirement in 2021.

"We reached out to Mo early this week about returning to Test cricket. Having had a couple of days to reflect, Mo is excited to join the squad and play Test cricket again,” Key said.

He was part of the England team that won the T20 World Cup in 2022 and played a key role in the team. He has five fivers in the Test format and also has one ten-wicket for England.

Notably, Moeen had retired from the Test cricket in order to perform at his best in the limited-overs cricket. Moeen has definitely stayed true to his words as he helped England win the last T20 World Cup and most recently won an IPL trophy with the Chennai Super Kings.

Speaking to ESPNCricinfo while in India playing the IPL, Moeen had said that he is getting back to his best self and that he's getting his rhythm back.

"I actually feel like there's things I've been missing over the last couple of years," he had said. "I've just started to get it back again: a bit of rhythm in my action.

"When I was playing Test matches, I always felt like I was bowling well in white-ball cricket. You can kind of lose that rhythm, I guess. I think I've got to have that mindset of still bowling with that same energy as I would have done in Test matches," Moeen had added.

England fast bowler Stuart Broad is also upbeat about Moeen's potential return to England Test team and said that he would fit easily into Bazball philosophy.

"We know Mo is a phenomenal cricketer and someone who would fit into Stokes and Baz's philosophy beautifully," Broad said to Sky Sports. "I don't know if he's being considered by the selectors or if he would consider red-ball cricket again. But he's a mighty fine cricketer," he added.

Ali was drafted into the Chennai Super Kings fold in 2021 and instantly became a hit with the fanbase. Dhoni recognised Ali's gameplay and promoted him up the order and used his willy offspin effectively during different stages of the match.&nbsp;

Prior to CSK's 2021 campaign, Ali was used at no.6 or 7 by his national side. However, after Dhoni used him in a different way, even the 'Three Lions' started using Ali in a similar way.&nbsp;

Former Australia captain Michael Clarke has slammed England all-rounder Moeen Ali for his recent comments criticising the 'horrible' scheduling in international cricket. Ali called out the tight schedule after England defeated Pakistan in the final to win the T20 World Cup 2022 title on Sunday (November 13).

England are already gearing up for their next international assignment in less than a week after playing the T20 World Cup 2022 final as they will take on Australia in a three-match ODI series starting from Thursday (November 17). England players have a break of just three days before they return to action once again post the recently-concluded World Cup.

Calling out the packed schedule, Ali said it becomes difficult for the players to give their hundred percent in every game if they have to play so frequently with no time for rest and recovery.&nbsp;

"Having a game in three days' time, it's horrible. But it's better than two days' time. If it had rained on Sunday, it would have been two days (if the reserve day came into play)," Ali said after England's T20 World Cup triumph.

"As players, we're kind of getting used to it now. But to give 100 percent all the time is difficult when you're playing every two, three days," he added.

Moeen further pointed out how it was the same situation after England had won the ODI World Cup in 2019 as the team had little time to celebrate with their next assignment lined up shortly after the tournament. The England star said it's a shame that they don't have enough time to celebrate their T20 World Cup victory.

"Those kind of things are a shame. As a group we want to enjoy and celebrate and have that [time] because you put so much into it. It's not just while the tournament is going on, there's the pre-tournament, the build-up and all that," said Moeen.

"Players can’t complain about the international schedule when they’re taking opportunity to play domestic cricket as well for franchises for money when you can have that six or eight weeks off. Then you’d be as fresh as a daisy. I’ve obviously found that very hard," said Clarke.
