IPL 2021- KL Rahul shines as Punjab Kings bounce back to winning ways

The Punjab Kings have a ritzy squad, however, they have not tracked down their ideal team mix in IPL 2021. Up until now, they have played six matches, recording two successes and four losses. In their match against Kolkata Knight Riders, the Punjab Kings batting unit was without dynamism and dependability. The trinity of KL Rahul, Mayank Agarwal, and Chris Gayle was required to ensure sure-footed security aside, yet that hasn't actually been the case up until now.

In the meantime, Royal Challengers Bangalore have ruled their adversaries in IPL 2021. Royal Challengers Bangalore have won five out of their six matches this year. Even after the loss against CSK, they ricocheted back by securing a one-run spine-chiller versus Delhi Capitals.

Head-to-Head

The Punjab Kings lead the head-to-head record against the Royal Challengers Bangalore by 14-12. The two teams ran into each other twice in the United Arab Emirates a year ago, with Punjab Kings arising victorious on both occasions.

Punjab Kings

Punjab Kings' batting frailties were uncovered in their games against Chennai Super Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Kolkata Knight Riders, where they imploded after KL Rahul returned to the pavilion early. They need to include Dawid Malan into the playing XI to give some stoutness to their batting setup and give them some possibility of reviving their mission after a flimsy beginning.

Their bowling hasn't been poor, as such, however, they need to get the overseas workforce, as Jhye Richardson, Riley Meredith, and Chris Jordan have not conveyed with the ball.

Probable XI: KL Rahul, Mayank Agarwal, Chris Gayle, Dawid Malan/Nicholas Pooran, Deepak Hooda, Shahrukh Khan, Moises Henriques, Chris Jordan/Riley Meredith, Ravi Bishnoi, Mohammed Shami, Arshdeep Singh.

Royal Challengers Bangalore

Royal Challengers Bangalore could stay with a similar playing XI they went in within their last game. Albeit, the captain will attempt to get back among the runs as he hasn't had an extraordinary effect, in the midst of opening the batting.

AB de Villiers has scored 692 runs for RCB in matches against Punjab while Virat Kohli has amassed 681 runs versus Punjab Kings.

Mohammed Siraj's experience with the Indian team has transformed him into a pristine bowler and Harshal Patel is fleeing with the purple cap. The RCB bowlers kept things generally tight and got wickets at standard spans. Among the bowlers, Yuzvendra Chahal has excused 21 Punjab Kings batters in his vocation.

Probable XI: Virat Kohli, Devdutt Padikkal, Rajat Patidar, Glenn Maxwell, AB de Villiers, Washington Sundar, Daniel Sams, Kyle Jamieson, Harshal Patel, Yuzvendra Chahal, Mohammed Siraj.

With two valuable points up for grabs, we ought to be in for a cracking challenge at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

PBKS' bowlers have had a standard excursion, however, it's their conflicting performances with the bat that have intensified their hardships. While KL Rahul is relied upon to be aggressive and anchor the innings, simultaneously, the reality stays that his dismissals will in general leave the team uncovered.

Thinking about their affinity to slash and change, it will not be a shock if Dawid Malan makes the playing XI for this game, as his essence could permit Rahul to play with somewhat more opportunity at the top. While PBKS will hope to adjust to the conditions at the Chepauk better, they'll likewise hope to misuse MI center middle-order battles at this venue.

The defending champs would need Suryakumar Yadav and Rohit Sharma, two players who haven't been influenced much by the gradualness of the track, to take care of business against PBKS.

The significant explanation for the accomplishment of the Mumbai Indians in the IPL is their solid bowling center. Jasprit Bumrah stands out against PBKS with 17 scalps from 12 innings. In view of his steady bowling and the varieties he carries with his bouncers and yorkers, he is certainly the one to look out for.

Pollard is the highest run-scorer for the Mumbai Indians against Punjab Kings with 498 runs from 20 innings at an SR of 164.90 and a normal of 38.31. IPL 2021, Punjab Kings - Team Preview: Can KL Rahul and Co. revive the 'rebranded' franchise?

Australian all-rounder Moises Henriques recently led his team Sydney Sixers to a title win in Big Bash League (BBL) and said that he was looking to do the same with Punjab Kings' KL Rahul.

“Just because you're the captain, it doesn't mean you run the show. I had 10 other very good players, very good leaders out there helping me,” the Punjab Kings website quoted Henriques as saying.

“And now I'll be trying to do the same for KL (Rahul), whether it be while playing or watching the game. It is about trying to make the team get better from wherever I may be,” he added.

Henriques felt that good fielding is vital for a team and could switch it in their favour.

“I think fielding is a huge part of the game that doesn't get the praise and the acknowledgement it deserves. A lot of the best teams I've played with have had really good fielding setups,” said Henriques.

“If you can constantly save 5-10 runs in the field whilst the other teams are probably losing a few runs on the field everytime. If you take that half catch or the odd run-out chance, you do it multiple times in a season and it will probably get you two or three extra wins through the course of a season,” explained the 34-year-old.

Rahul addressed a virtual press conference on Thursday and talked about the healthy competition for the wicketkeeper’s slot with Rishabh Pant who is having a prolific run in cricket currently.

“When you are part of this Indian team, you always know competition would be really high. You can never sit back and feel comfortable like you own your position. That's the good thing, our team has high talent, players will always come in. As a player in this team, you always try to push yourself and try to get better with each passing day,” Rahul said.

Rahul was asked whether it was easier to start afresh in a new series, to which he replied: “Like I said, the ODI format, playing at number five, I could take a little more time than I did maybe in T20s. Having spent a little time in the middle, having played a couple of good shots, the footwork got better.

“When I walked in, Shikhar was batting well. I knew when Krunal walked in, I realised we had to stitch a partnership together, when you stop thinking about your own personal game and when there is responsibility in front of you, you start thinking clearer, having spent 20-25 balls in the middle, I started to feel more confident,” said Rahul.

'Our team has high talent': KL Rahul on healthy competition for keeper's spot with Rishabh Pant

India's KL Rahul on Thursday said that lean patch of form in the five-match T20I series against England never impacted his confidence. Rahul managed to accumulate just 15 runs in four matches before being dropped from the fifth and final T20I in Ahmedabad.

However, Rahul returned to the Team India playing XI in the first ODI and roared back to form with an unbeaten 62 to power India to a mammoth score of 317 in 50 overs.

"I was confident, for a player to come this far, it's only self-belief that gets him this far. I have always been confident about who I am as a player and who I am as a person. It was never an issue of confidence and self-belief. Like I said, sometimes it's sport, you try everything that is possible and which is in your control, still, it does not go your way. You accept it and try to learn from the mistakes you have done. I was always confident, I knew in the nets and the practice sessions, I was batting well.

"If there was a real issue with my batting, then I probably would have been a little under-confident, scoring runs is important and it is everything for a player but for me, I also look at myself at training. If I am preparing well and I am hitting the ball well, my mind is in the right place. Most of the things were going well, just the number chart was not going my way, which is disappointing. When I open the batting, the team looks upto the openers to give them a solid start and score runs, but it never impacted my confidence," said KL Rahul during a virtual press conference on Thursday.

But what did Rahul do differently in the first ODI as compared to the T20I series? The swashbuckling right-handed batsman said that he didn't dwell into his thoughts much to avoid overthinking while adding that playing at a high level, every player goes through such a phase.

“Everybody goes through this; I did not do anything different. I was not too stressed, as a player, you are disappointed. Sitting on the bench for a while, I did not play for 3-3.5 months so I was really excited about playing the white-ball series. Every player in the team wants to do well, sometimes it does not happen, you have to accept it.

"I asked myself if I prepared well, and when I thought about it, I did everything right, after that, if I did not score runs, then it's fine, I accept that. Having said that, it does not mean that you do not feel disappointed. When you are playing at this level, you always want to perform, but you need to accept that it is not always going to go your way. When things were going right, I did not question my process so I did not want to sit back and overthink after four-five bad performances, I was doing most things right which was in my control," Rahul explained.

ALSO READ: ECB ready to offer IPL franchises stakes in The Hundred teams to lure Indian cricketers But what did Rahul do differently in the first ODI as compared to the T20I series? ALSO READ: Nissanka, Dickwella star for Sri Lanka as Windies chase 375-run target Answering whether it's easier to start afresh in a new series, Rahul replied: "Like I said, the ODI format, playing at number five, I could take a little more time than I did maybe in T20s. Having spent a little time in the middle, having played a couple of good shots, the footwork got better. When I walked in, Shikhar was batting well. I knew when Krunal walked in, I realised we had to stitch a partnership together, when you stop thinking about your own personal game and when there is responsibility in front of you, you start thinking clearer, having spent 20-25 balls in the middle, I started to feel more confident." India and England will lock horns for the second ODI in Pune on March 26. The Men in Blue lead the series 1-0.

IND vs ENG 2nd ODI: Lean patch in T20Is never impacted confidence, says KL Rahul

Former Indian batsman VVS Laxman has weighed his opinion on KL Rahul's poor run of form in the ongoing five-match T20I series between India and England at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Rahul has registered scores of 1 and a couple of ducks in the ongoing series in what has been disappointing outings for the elegant batsman.

While Indian skipper Virat Kohli and batting coach Vikram Rathour have publicly backed Rahul despite his torrid run of form, Laxman has said that the self-confidence and rhythm are lacking in Rahul's batting as he has not played much international cricket. However, he said that Rahul will not be happy with the way he was dismissed in the three T20Is against England while pointing out where the technical flaws stood in his batting.

“He [Rahul] will have to play because he has not played much international cricket. He is not a regular member in Test matches now. But KL Rahul will be disappointed the way he got out in all three innings,” Laxman told Star Sports.

“If we talk or think about KL Rahul's batting, he is a technically correct batsman. He has scored centuries in Test cricket as well but the way both his feet are on the crease and the bat away from the body because of which a gap is seen between bat and pad,” added Laxman.

Laxman further said that with Rahul's confidence level low, it would be a massive setback for the batsman if the team leaves him out of the playing XI at this point.

“So somewhere or the other I feel the self-confidence and rhythm that is generally seen in KL Rahul's batting is not seen at all. His confidence level is low, so if you leave him out at this point, it will be a big setback for him,” concluded Laxman.

Dhawan, Rahul or Rohit ? Virat Kohli confirms opening combination for India in T20I series vs England

Cricket pundits and fans often talk about players who deserve to play for their country - due to their talent, skills, form and consistency. While there have been several players who may have all the talent in the world but can’t crack it on the big stage, Indian all-rounder Jalaj Saxena has been picking wickets for fun while also contributing with the bat on a consistent note in the domestic circuit but one thing keeps on evading him - the elusive Indian cap.

Jalaj, after finding no bids in IPL 2019 despite impressive numbers in domestic T20 cricket, was signed up by Punjab Kings for his base price of INR 30 lac. However, it is not the first time the veteran all-rounder has been picked by an IPL franchise. He was earlier part of Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Delhi Capitals but didn’t make his IPL debut. Interestingly, he is only among three Indian players, who have featured in the now-defunct Champions League T20 but never made their IPL debuts.

Jalaj may think he has been sort of unfortunate when it comes to getting that dream Team India call-up. Among 19 cricketers to have scored more than 6000 runs and picked up more than 300 wickets in the history of First-Class cricket in India, Jalaj Saxena is the only player yet to represent the country.

“I never think about selection. It is not in my hands. Obviously, to do well season after season in domestic cricket is very satisfying but I don’t think about selection as it is not in my hands. And talking about bringing my experience, I would love to do that and hopefully help Punjab win the trophy. They have played good cricket in the past but have missed the final push. Hopefully, I can provide that factor,” Jalaj told WION in an interview.

The Punjab outfit went with a hefty purse in the auction as they shelled out money for players with good reputation in the shortest format of the game. India announce playing XI for Boxing Day Test vs Australia; Shubman Gill to debut

Young Indian opener Prithvi Shaw is likely to be dropped from the Indian playing XI for the Boxing Day Test, scheduled to start from January 26 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. While there are calls for Shubman Gill to replace Shaw in the opening slot, former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has given his take on who should replace Shaw as the opener in Indian playing XI.

Shaw has looked out of form since the Indian Premier League and continued his poor run of form in the warm-up matches against Australia A. However, he was handed a start in the Adelaide Test, which ended up in Australia’s favour with Shaw returning with scores of 0 and 4.

“India should start the Melbourne Test well, it’s necessary for them to step onto the ground with a lot of positivity. Australia’s weak point is their batting,” said Gavaskar.

Sunil Gavaskar wants this batsman to replace Prithvi Shaw in Boxing Day Test vs Australia

The Indian cricket team suffered utter humiliation in their eight-wicket defeat to Australia in the Adelaide Test as Australia got off to a perfect start to take an early 1-0 lead into the four-match Border Gavaskar Trophy. For the first time in their history, none of the Indian batsmen got into double figures while registering the lowest Test score for India. And after the Adelaide horror, Indian team is set to make landslide changes into the playing XI for the second Test, which will be played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground from December 26.

According to a report in TOI, Indian team is set to make as many as five changes in the playing XI. Two of the five changes come forced with Virat Kohli leaving for India and Mohammed Shami down and out with a fractured hand. Apart from Kohli and Shami, the likes of Wriddhiman Saha, Prithvi Shaw and Hanuma Vihari are also expected to warm the bench in the Boxing Day Test.

Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja and either of Mohammed Siraj or Navdeep Saini are set to be included in the playing XI as Indian team looks to bounce back after a catastrophic performance in Adelaide.

Gill is likely to be slotted in at number four, the spot Virat Kohli bats in Test cricket while Rahul is expected to open the innings with Mayank Agarwal. Pant will come in as a natural replacement for Saha with Jadeja, if fit, likely to get in the team in place of Vihari, whose exclusion will come as a surprise if it happens.

With Siraj and Saini fighting for the third seamer’s spot in Shami’s absence, it would be interesting to see whom the Indian team management picks in the final team.

AUS vs IND: After Adelaide horror, Indian team set to make 5 changes in playing XI

With Virat Kohli leaving for India, legendary Australian pacer Glenn McGrath suggested two vital changes in Team India's playing XI for the Boxing Day Test match against Australia in Melbourne that is scheduled to start on December 26.

The bowler also commented on India's collapse during Day 3 of the first day-night Test in Adelaide despite taking a lead of 62 runs by the end of Day 2. It took the hosts only 21 overs to chase 90 runs to win the first Test by 8 wickets.

“India had to start well. They needed to get a win on the board, but unfortunately, that hasn’t happened. It was an unbelievable bowling performance by Australia,” said McGrath in the post-match show on Sony Sports Network.

“Virat Kohli is such an impact player. Without him, it leaves a big hole but at the same time it leaves an opportunity to other players to put their hand up,” McGrath said. The former Australia fast bowler named KL Rahul as Kohli’s replacement. “Maybe KL Rahul can come in for Virat Kohli,” he said.

McGrath suggested another change in the opening slot of the Indian batting order. “The other option India have is Shubman Gill, who actually came out looking positive in one-day series, he didn’t seemed to be overawed by the stage, that to me would be one potential change at the top,” McGrath added.

Prithvi Shaw's form has been a worry for the Men in Blue, former Aussie said: “They need to know internally how he’s going. The captain, the coaches, the support staff will have to know that. The thing that I’m worried about is that he got out in the same way in two innings. That is a concern against bowlers like Cummins, Hazlewood and Starc. They gonna come at you always. The internal people will know it.”

KL Rahul and Virat Kohli witness jump in ICC rankings after T20 series win

Ahead of the impending three-match ODI series against Australia, India’s white-ball vice-captain KL Rahul on Wednesday said that his batting position will be determined by the format of cricket the team will be playing against Australia with both the sides ready to lock horns in three ODIs, as many T20Is and four Tests.

KL Rahul, before the lockdown, was utilized at number four or five in ODI cricket while opening in the T20I format. However, with the likes of Shikhar Dhawan, Mayank Agarwal and Shubman Gill in the team, it is likely that Rahul will continue to bat in the middle-order when it comes to 50-over cricket. The absence of Rohit Sharma also puts a bit of pressure in the batting unit and Rahul’s great run of form with the willow will ease it.

My batting position will depend on the format I am playing: KL Rahul

"My batting position will depend on the format I am playing and what the team wants from me and what combination sits better, the last ODI series we played, I batted at number five and I kept the wickets so yeah, it is a role that I enjoyed and I am happy to play whatever role the team gives me," said Rahul in a virtual press-conference on Thursday ahead of the first ODI against Australia in Sydney.

"Look I haven`t played a lot of 50-over cricket for a continued period of time, though I have been a part of the Indian team for a few years now, I have not gotten a continued run in the 50-over format like this, it feels good that I am contributing for the team," he added.

Rahul ended up as the top run-scorer in Indian Premier League 2020 where he hammered 670 runs in 15 matches and the elegant batsman is looking forward to carrying his form into international cricket.

"I mean I did get a little bit of feeler with the IPL, I had to play similar roles there as well, it was challenging and it was new, but I got used to that role and I started enjoying it. Hopefully, I will continue the same here, Virat will always be there for the boys and that will make my job a little easier. It is a very proud moment, and hopefully, I can keep on putting similar performances," said Rahul.
