On Thursday (January 05), the Asian Cricket Council chairman and BCCI Secretary, Jay Shah released the calendar for 2023 and 2024, confirming that the forthcoming Asia Cup 2023 edition will be held in September. Hence, the marquee continental tournament will take place in the subcontinent -- with no confirmation regarding the hosts -- ahead of this year's ODI World Cup in India.

Thus, India and Pakistan's rivalry will resume at the Asia Cup. In 2022, both sides faced each other thrice and produced thrilling ties each and every time. India and Pakistan met twice in the Asia Cup, with both winning and losing once, before Rohit Sharma & Co. edged past Babar Azam's Men in Green by four wickets in a riveting T20 World Cup 2022 encounter, at the MCG, Melbourne, on October 23.

The tournament will be held in the ODI format, as a dress rehearsal for the 50-over World Cup in India. Asia Cup to be held in September before ODI World Cup, confirms ACC chairman Jay Shah

After Rishabh Pant was moved out of the ICU at Max hospital, Dehradun, the wicketkeeper-batter is set to be airlifted to Mumbai where he will continue to be treated for multiple injuries (at the Kokilaben Ambani Hospital) he suffered during a freak car accident on December 30. The incident took place on the Delhi-Dehradun highway which shocked the entire cricketing fraternity. On Wednesday (January 04), the decision to airlift Pant from Dehradun to Mumbai was taken by the BCCI Secretary Jay Shah after a review meeting with the board's medical team (as per a report in Cricbuzz).

After being taken to Mumbai, the 25-year-old Pant will be monitored by the BCCI panel doctors who will go through his reports and assess his condition. As per reports, the BCCI is also mulling to send Pant overseas, preferably London, for treatment under experts if deemed necessary. It is to be noted that Pant had rammed his car into a divider in the wee hours on December 30 (Friday). He was driving alone when he suffered injuries following the car accident.

Pant -- India's first-choice keeper-batter across formats -- had suffered multiple injuries in the car accident. The injuries included two cuts on his forehead, a ligament tear in his right knee whereas the youngster also hurt his right wrist, ankle, toe and suffered abrasion injuries on his back. He is set to be out of cricketing action for some months, at least till the first half of 2023. He is very likely to miss the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, on home soil, and also be out of IPL 2023.

Pant's car accident shocked the entire cricketing fraternity. Recently, former Indian captain, Kapil Dev told ABP News, "This is a lesson. When I was still an up-and-coming cricketer, I had a motorcycle accident. From that day onwards, my brother didn't even let me touch the motorbike. I'm just thankful to God that Rishabh Pant is safe. Yes, you have a good-looking car with great speed but you have to be careful. You can easily afford a driver, you don't have to drive it yourself." He added, "I understand that one has hobbies or even passion for such things, it's natural to have it at his age, but you also have responsibilities. Only you can take care of yourself. You have to decide things for yourself."

BCCI to airlift Rishabh Pant to Mumbai, mulling to send him overseas for expert care

The Indian senior men's cricket team had an ordinary run in 2022. The year saw them dominate the T20I format enroute to the World Cup but they were whitewashed in three ODIs in South Africa, lost a golden opportunity to win a Test series in SA and England (losing the one-off Test in Edgbaston), didn't qualify for Asia Cup 2022 final and bowed out of the T20 WC in the semi-finals. Further, they even lost to Bangladesh (2-1) in three ODIs in the Bangla Tigers' den. Hence, a review meeting was held by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) which was attended by President Roger Binny, Secretary Jay Shah, head coach Rahul Dravid and captain Rohit Sharma.

One of the most-talked about aspects in Indian cricket, in 2022, was the regular injury concerns. After conceding the ODI series with loss in the second game, Rohit had stated in the post-match presentation, "I mean there are definitely a few injury concerns. We need to try and get to the bottom of it. I don't know what exactly it is. Maybe they're playing too much cricket. We need to try and monitor those guys, because it's important to understand when they come for India, they need to be 100%, in fact more than 100%." Thus, the Yo-Yo Test -- introduced during Virat Kohli-Ravi Shastri era -- has returned whereas BCCI has also added a new selection criteria by introducing the Dexa test for Indian players.

What is Dexa test? All you need to know

It is to be noted that Dexa, also called the 'bone density test', is an X-ray technology (dual-energy x-ray) used to measure bone strength. It, in turn, will help find out if the player taking the test is at risk of breaking or losing bones. In addition, it will help in measuring body composition as well as noting body fat and muscle mass.

Meanwhile, the National Cricket Academy chief VVS Laxman was also part of the meeting, who also served as the stand-in coach for Team India at regular intervals last year. The NCA will now also closely work with all IPL franchises in workload management for 20 targeted players for the 2023 ODI World Cup. Moreover, players have been asked to not miss international fixtures going forward as India commence preparations for the home ODI WC, later this year, in a bid to end their nine-year-long ICC-title-drought.

Rishabh Pant accident: He is stable and undergoing scans, confirms BCCI Secretary Jay Shah

Ramiz Raja was recently removed as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman. His stint was a controversial one with New Zealand withdrawing from their tour of Pakistan in September 2021 just before the tour opener, whereas England cricket team also followed suit. While Australia toured and England also followed suit, with the Kiwis currently in Pakistan for two Tests and three ODIs, Team Pakistan also had a mixed run -- ending second in Asia Cup and T20 World Cup 2022 -- before losing their first-ever Test series on home soil (against England).

Following the England Tests, Ramiz was ousted as the PCB chief. During his tenure, he spoke a lot against Indian cricket and often slammed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). All hell broke loose when Asian Cricket Council (ACC) chief and BCCI Secretary Jay Shah confirmed that India won't travel to Pakistan for the 2023 Asia Cup and the continental tournament will be held at a neutral venue.

In reply, Ramiz slammed the BCCI and also went onto claim that Pakistan won't travel to India for the ODI World Cup, later next year, if the Asia Cup is moved out of Pakistan.

Speaking on Duniya News, the 60-year-old Ramiz has once again lashed out at the BCCI. He has urged the new PCB management to not fulfil each and every demand of the BCCI and show some leadership, which he claims was evident during his stint.

He said, "One positive from my stint as a chairman was that I provided leadership. If you remember, New Zealand had left, and we told them that what you did was unfair. The England team refused to come; we spoke with them, following which they played 7 T20Is instead of 5, two extra. The ECB staff visited Lahore's Gaddafi Stadium; they came to my office and apologised. Similarly, Australia also visited."

"What is leadership? When Asian Cricket Council has asked Pakistan to host a tournament and then India says they won't travel to Pakistan and shift the tournament to a neutral venue, what should be the response? Kya hum sab servant rahenge India ke, kyunki woh ek world power hain apne hisab se. Kya hum har cheez unki mante jayenge?" (Are we servants of India just because they are a world power in cricket? Should we listen to everything they say?)," Ramiz questioned.

The former Pakistan captain further believes that Pakistan is moving in the right direction and the current crop of players, and fans, should be respected by everyone and no one has a right to move Asia Cup out of the country. Ramiz added, "The Pakistan cricket team is enjoying a great run; you have a good fan following; you have superstars, so please give your team and fans the respect they deserve. There should be a decision on the matter, as the tournament was given to Pakistan, so how can it be shifted to a neutral venue without consulting us or the ACC members."

Messi's Argentina defeated the defending champions France in the final of the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Lusail on December 17th. Deemed by many as the greatest final ever, Argentina led during the major part of the match. Even though they were 2-0 up until the end of the 80th minute, they still couldn't win the match inside regular time. With two goals in two minutes from French striker Kylian Mbappe forced the match into the extra time. Over there, Messi scored the 2nd goal of the final whereas Mbappe completed his hattrick through the penalty awarded in the 117th minute.

With the scores now tied, the match went into the penalties where Argentina walked out as winners with the score of 4-2. The win in the final gave Argentina it's third World Cup and Lionel Messi his first silverware.

For his outstanding performances throughout the World Cup, where Messi had seven goals and three assists to his name, he was awarded with the Golden Ball for the second time in his career, having already won it in the 2014 edition.

In super news for all IPL fans across the world, on Sunday, Jay Shah – BCCI’s secretary received the Guinness World Record on behalf of the board for the largest attendance at the T20 match ever. This feat was achieved during the final of this year’s IPL between Gujarat Titans and Rajasthan Royals when 101,566 cricket fans attended the match at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmadabad. The renovated stadium was supposed to host more than 100,000 people at a time during a game, and that only happened.

Upon receiving this award, BCCI tweeted, "A proud moment for everyone as India creates the Guinness World Record. This one is for all our fans for their unmatched passion and unwavering support. Congratulations to @GCAMotera and @IPL,"

Jay Shah retweeted the post and further added, "Extremely delighted & proud to receive the Guinness World Record for the largest attendance at a T20 match when 101,566 people witnessed the epic @IPLfinal at @GCAMotera's magnificent Narendra Modi Stadium on 29 May 2022. The IPL 2022 final took place on May 29th in Ahmadabad between the newly inducted team Gujarat Titans and the inaugural winners of the Indian Premier League, Rajasthan Royals. 'A new era of gender equality': BCCI to give equal match fees to women cricketers as male counterparts

Pakistan cricket legend Javed Miandad has slammed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) over its stand on the Asia Cup 2023 after Jsecretary Jay Shah's recent comments. BCCI secretary and Asian Cricket Council (ACC) president Shah kicked up a storm in the cricket fraternity with his recent comments as he made it clear India won't travel to Pakistan for the Asia Cup next year.

Shah said the tournament will be shifted to a neutral venue despite Pakistan currently holding the hosting rights for Asia Cup 2023. His statement has been criticised by several former Pakistan cricketers, who have slammed the BCCI for refusing to travel to the country for the tournament.

Some have also urged the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to boycott the ODI World Cup in India next year as a mark of protest if the Asia Cup is shifted from Pakistan. Miandad became the latest to join the bandwagon and said Asia Cup should be scrapped if the tournament cannot be hosted by Pakistan. He also urged the BCCI to not bring politics into cricket.

Asia Cup was shifted to a neutral venue in UAE due to political reasons in 2018 when India were the hosts of the tournament. The tournament was once again moved to the UAE earlier this year as Sri Lanka, the hosts, were dealing with an economic crisis.

Scrap Asia Cup, don't bring politics into cricket: Javed Miandad slams BCCI after Jay Shah's comments

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah recently announced the Indian cricket team will not be travelling to Pakistan for the Asia Cup 2023 and the tournament will be shifted to a neutral venue. Ever since his statement, Shah, who is also the president of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), has been criticised by several former Pakistan cricketers.

Shah's comments came after BCCI's Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Tuesday where it was decided that team India won't travel to Pakistan. India and Pakistan have not played bilateral cricket against each other since 2013 due to political tensions between the two nations and have met only in major ICC competitions.

Reacting to Shah's comments, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) made its displeasure known and also threatened to boycott the 2023 ODI World Cup which is scheduled to be played in India. Several former Pakistan cricketers have also urged the PCB to boycott the ODI World Cup next year as a mark of protest if India refuse to travel to Pakistan.

In the wake of the controversy, legendary Pakistan cricketer Wasim Akram has also hit back at Shah for his comments and said India cannot dictate the way Pakistan wants to play their cricket. Akram said Shah should have held a meeting with the PCB and the board of the Asian Cricket Council before making a statement on the venue of the Asia Cup 2023.

"It was a brilliant statement from our cricket board. India can't dictate how Pakistan plays their cricket. Pakistan have started hosting teams after 10-15 years now. I'm an ex-cricketer, sportsperson, I don't know what's happening on the political front. But communication is important. If Jay Shah had to say something, he should have called the PCB chairman, there should have been a meeting of the Asian Cricket Council. He should have put forth his idea and there should have been a discussion,” Akram said on A-Sports.

“You can't just stand up and say we are not travelling when the Asian Cricket Council awarded the hosting rights to Pakistan. That's not fair,” he added.

Shah's comments came days ahead of the blockbuster clash between India and Pakistan in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2022. The arch-rivals are set to lock horns in their respective openers at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCC) on October 23 in what promises to be a nail-biter.

This is not the first time Asia Cup will be shifted to a neutral venue from its original venue. In 2018, India were the hosts but the tournament was moved to the UAE due to political reasons Earlier this year, the tournament was shifted from Sri Lanka to UAE due to the economic crisis in the island nation.

India can't dictate how Pakistan plays cricket: Wasim Akram on BCCI secretary Jay Shah's Asia Cup statement

Jay Shah's revelation on the Asia Cup 2023 edition has sparked a huge controversy. After BCCI'S Annual General Meeting (AGM), on Tuesday (October 18) in Mumbai, Shah commenced his second innings as the board's secretary whereas Roger Binny succeeded Sourav Ganguly to become the new chief.

After the AGM, Shah -- who is also Asian Cricket Council's (ACC) -- revealed that the next year's Asia Cup won't be held in Pakistan as India can't travel to the neighbouring country due to the strained political relations between both nations. Hence, he confirmed that a neutral venue will once again host the Asia Cup, as was the case during this year's edition (held in the UAE with eventful winners Sri Lanka as hosts).

Since then, Pakistan's former cricketers and even their board PCB have strongly reacted to the ACC chief's claims. Now, veteran keeper-batter Kamran Akmal also joined the bandwagon and has even suggested Team Pakistan to boycott India at all levels, including the upcoming T20 World Cup clash on October 23 (Sunday) at the MCG, Melbourne.

“I believe Jay Shah’s statement was unexpected, and since he attended the Pakistan-India game during this year’s Asia Cup, he should reserve politics for his opposition and avoid dragging it into sports,” Kamran told ARY news.

He added, "Asia Cup should only be hosted in Pakistan and if that does not happen then Pakistan should not play against India at any level, be it ICC events’ matches, Asia Cup matches, or even their match on October 23."

PCB responds to ACC President's statement:

“The PCB has noted with surprise and disappointment of yesterday’s comments made by the ACC President Mr Jay Shah with regards to shifting of next year’s Asia Cup to a neutral venue. The comments were made without any discussion or consultation with the Board of the Asian Cricket Council or the Pakistan Cricket Board (event host) and without any thoughts towards their long-term consequences and implications."

"After having presided over the ACC meeting during which Pakistan was awarded the ACC Asia Cup with an overwhelming support and response from the ACC Board Members, Mr Shah’s statement of shifting of the ACC Asia Cup has clearly been made unilaterally. This is contrary to the philosophy and spirit for which the Asian Cricket Council was formed in September 1983 – a united Asian cricket body to safeguard the interests of the its Members and organise, develop, and promote the game of cricket in Asia."

The statement added, "The overall impact of such statements have the potential to split the Asian and international cricketing communities, and can impact Pakistan’s visit to India for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 and future ICC Events in India in the 2024-2031 cycle.

“The PCB has to date not received any official communication or clarification from the ACC on the statement of the ACC President. As such, the PCB has now requested the Asian Cricket Council to convene an emergency meeting of its Board as soon as practically possible to discuss this important and sensitive matter.”

As of now, a venue for Asia Cup 2023 edition is expected to be finalised in the near future whereas India are set to host next year's ODJ World Cup. However, Pakistan's participation is doubtful following PCB's reaction.

Amid BCCI vs PCB for Asia Cup, Kamran Akmal calls for Pakistan to boycott T20 World Cup clash vs India

Following Asian Cricket Council (ACC) chief and BCCI Secretary Jay Shah's recent revelation, where he confirmed that India won't travel to Pakistan for 2023 Asia Cup and the continental tournament will take place at a neutral venue, the former Pakistan cricketers have lashed out at him. Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) also threatened to pull out of the 2023 ODI World Cup, which is set to be held in India later next year.

Amid all this, sports minister and former BCCI chief Anurag Thakur has joined the bandwagon and reacted to PCB's official statement. While interacting with the media during the announcement of the Khelo India Youth Games on Thursday (October 20), Thakur said, "It’s BCCI’s issue and they will comment on it. India is a sporting powerhouse, where many World Cups have been played. The ODI World Cup will also be held next year in India and all big teams around the planet will participate in it. Because you can’t ignore India in any sport. India has contributed a lot to sports, especially cricket. So, the World Cup will be organised next year, and it will be a grand and historic tournament. The home ministry will take a decision as there are security concerns in Pakistan. It’s not just cricket. India is not in a position to listen to anyone. Sports minister Anurag Thakur gives blunt reply after PCB threatens to withdraw from 2023 ODI World Cup

The BCCI can't take a call on its own on whether the Indian team will travel to Pakistan for the 2023 Asia Cup or not as it relies on the government to make such decisions, new Board president Roger Binny said on Thursday. Speaking at an event organised by Karnataka State Cricket Association here, Binny said the BCCI has not approached the government yet on travelling to Pakistan next year but eventually the central government will only decide on the matter.

"That is not BCCI's call. We need government's clearance to leave the country. Whether we leave the country or teams coming into the country, we need clearance.
"Once we get clearance from the government then we go with it. We can't make decision on our own. We have to rely on the government. We have not approached them yet," said World Cup winner Binny. The Asia Cup is scheduled to be played in Pakistan in September next year, ahead of the ODI World Cup in India.
Binny's comments came after BCCI secretary Jay Shah said the Indian team will not travel to Pakistan next year for the Asia Cup and will instead like to play the tournament at a neutral venue.

Earlier on Thursday, Sports Minister Anurag Thakur said the Indian team will need clearance from the Home Ministry to travel to Pakistan. A 'disappointed' Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Wednesday requested the Asian Cricket Council to convene an emergency meeting. Referring to Shah's comment, the PCB had said that "such statements can spilt the Asian and international cricket communities" and impact Pakistan's visit to India for the 2023 World Cup. India haven't travelled to Pakistan since the 2008 Asia Cup, and after the Mumbai terror attack on November 26 that year, the scheduled bilateral series in early 2009 was cancelled.

Pakistan did travel to India for a short six-match white-ball series in 2012, but in the last 10 years, there hasn't been any bilateral cricket. The two teams have only played each other at various ICC and ACC events.

The BCCI can't take a call on its own on whether the Indian team will travel to Pakistan for the 2023 Asia Cup or not as it relies on the government to make such decisions, new Board president Roger Binny said on Thursday.

Travelling to Pakistan for Asia Cup not board's call, government will decide: BCCI chief Roger Binny

On Tuesday, (October 18), a major change in leadership took place at the BCCI with Roger Binny taking over as the board's 36th President, after Sourav Ganguly's exit. The former Indian captain had attained the top post in late 2019.

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah, however, resumed his second innings and made a massive claim while interacting with the reporters after the board's 91st Annual General Meeting (AGM). Shah, who is also Asian Cricket Council's (ACC) chief, revealed that the 2023 Asia Cup won't be held in Pakistan as India won't travel to their neighbouring country.

"The Asia Cup 2023 will be held at a neutral venue. I am saying this as ACC President. We [India] can't go there [to Pakistan], they can't come here. In the past also, Asia Cup has been played at a neutral venue," Shah told the media.

Following this, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) have reportedly threatened to boycott the 2023 ODI World Cup, to be held in India after the 50-over Asia Cup. Now, former Pakistan all-rounder and captain Shahid Afridi joined the bandwagon and slammed Shah for his untimely comments.

Ganguly reportedly was keen on continuing as the president of the Indian cricket board and had made up his mind to fight the election against Binny. However, the former India captain couldn't garner support from the board members to get another term.

He was offered IPL chairmanship which he politely declined and is now set to return as the president of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB). Ganguly's exit from the BCCI has not only become a major talking point in the Indian cricket fraternity but has also made it to political debates in the country.

BCCI has not yet named a candidate for the ICC chairman post ahead of the ICC board's meeting to elect the next chairman in November. Ganguly was touted as one of the major candidates for the top post, however, it remains to be seen if the Indian cricket board will back him for the top job.

Pakistan are scheduled to host the 2023 Asia Cup, following which the ODI World Cup will be held in India in the latter half of next year. While India have not toured their neighbouring country since 2008 and both sides only meet during multi-nation or ICC events, due to the political tension, it might just be possible that India can make a visit to Pakistan for the next edition of the continental tournament. It is to be noted that the BCCI has dropped a major hint in the note given to state associations prior to the Annual General Meeting (AGM) on October 18.

It is to be noted that India's visit to Pakistan will be subject to the clearance of the government at the time but is believed to be in BCCI's plans. As per a report in Cricbuzz, the board officials didn't dwell much in this regard. However, the significant part is that the Indian cricket board's secretary Jay Shah is the president of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC).

"It will be subject to the clearance of the Government of India as always," said a BCCI official when asked to comment on the matter. Another alternative can be to take the mega event to the UAE, like it happened this year, but India's visit to Pakistan is certainly on the agenda of the BCCI.

India's visit to Pakistan for 2023 Asia Cup, subject to govt clearance, on BCCI's agenda: Report

BCCI President Sourav Ganguly is set to make way for Roger Binny as the 1983 World Cup winning hero is on the cusp of taking over the top post. It is believed that Ganguly was keen to carry on as the BCCI chief but fell out of favour. Reportedly, Ganguly was offered the post of IPL Chairman but the former Indian skipper denied the offer. He was eyeing the ICC Chairman post, however, the board isn't too keen to send him to the ICC as well.

Amid all this, Ganguly finally broke his silence during a recent event. Speaking at a Bandhan Bank event, Ganguly stated that he is now looking to move on to something else.

"I have been an administrator and I will move on to something else," he said at the event. "Whatever you do in life the best days are when you played for India. I have been president of BCCI and I will go on to do bigger things. I never believed in history but the feeling in the past was east lacked talent to play at that level. You don't become an Ambani or Narendra Modi in one day. You have to work for months and years to get there," he further added.

'I will...' - Outgoing BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly breaks silence with Roger Binny all set to succeed him

Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly was appointed as BCCI chief in late 2019. However, his three-year term is set to end next week with the 1983 World Cup hero Roger Binny to succeed him. After the Supreme Court waved off the three-year cooling-off period clause, Ganguly was a favourite to continue as the BCCI President till 2025. However, the former cricketer was reportedly informed that his stint is set to end after not going as per expectations.

Till Tuesday (October 12), Ganguly didn't give up on his position before being informed during informal meetings that he is set to lose the post. While many hoped Ganguly would contest for the ICC Chairman's position, it seems even that is unlikely to happen as the former Indian skipper isn't the BCCI's choice for the post, as per the Indian Express.

Ganguly, who led India post the match-fixing scandal till 2005, served as the president of the Cricket Association of Bengal before taking over as the BCCI chief in late 2019. Under him, the board managed to stage the IPL successfully in the post-Covid era. However, it is reported that many aren't impressed with his body of work as he is set to make way for Binny, who represented India in 72 ODIs and 27 Tests from 1979 to 1987. Meanwhile, Jay Shah is expected to continue as the BCCI Secretary whereas treasurer Arun Dhumal is likely to become the IPL Chairman.

As per reports, it seems Ganguly fell out of favour at the BCCI office and didn't hide his displeasure at the office headquarters in Mumbai on Tuesday. He did not suggest Roger Binny's name, the incoming president, which is a normal practice and completely looked out of sorts after failing to retain his position. "He clearly looked upset, disappointed and dejected," said a member present at the BCCI office as per Cricbuzz.

India's 1983-World Cup winner Roger Binny is likely to replace former captain Sourav Ganguly as the new president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Jay Shah is expected to retain his post as the secretary of the BCCI and might replace Ganguly as BCCI's representative in the International Cricket Council (ICC). This will be the second consecutive term for Shah as the BCCI secretary while treasurer Arun Dhumal is likely to take over as the new chairman of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Roger Binny frontrunner to replace Sourav Ganguly as BCCI president: Report

In a major development, the Supreme Court allowed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to amend its constitution, allowing both Sourav Ganguly and Jay Shah to continue as the President and Secretary, respectively. The former Indian captain took over as the BCCI chief in late 2019 along with Shah and are now set to extend their respective roles.

SC stated that the cooling-off period for office bearers will commence after two successive terms at either the BCCI or at the state association level. Thus, the office bearers can now have a maximum of 12 years at a stretch. This primarily means that they can have two three-year terms at the state association level and two three-year terms at the BCCI following which the cooling-off period will be applicable to them.

As per a report in the Indian Express, Shah is now the frontrunner to succeed Ganguly as the BCCI President. He has as many as 15 state associations backing him for the top post as they credit him for IPL being conducted in the Covid-era.

Jay Shah likely to take over as BCCI chief, Sourav Ganguly to compete for ICC Chairman's post: Reports

In a landmark decision, the Supreme Court of India on Wednesday paved the way for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah to continue in their respective top posts. The court accepted the Indian cricket board's proposal to amend its constitution and relax the mandatory cooling-off period for an office bearer.

Agreeing to scrap off the three-year cooling period, a bench led by Justice D Y Chandrachud orally agreed that office bearers in the BCCI should be allowed to have a longer tenure. The court ruled that the cooling-off period should come into play only after an office bearer has completed two consecutive terms in either the board or a state association.

The office bearers can now hold a position in a state association and the BCCI for at least 12 years straight. They can complete two consecutive three-year terms at a state association followed by two three-year terms at the BCCI. The cooling-off period will be applicable post that.

The BCCI had sought the amendment of clause six in the board's constitution, which states that an official who has completed a term of three years each at a state cricket association and the BCCI will have to undergo a mandatory three-year cooling-off period before regaining a position in the board.

The amendment was sought in regards to the current tenure of BCCIs' office bearers, including president Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah, who would have completed their respective first three-year terms at the BCCI in October this year.

Both Ganguly and Shah were serving in a state cricket association before taking over as BCCI's president and secretary in October 2019 and have completed six years. But they will now be able to continue in their respective roles and have a second term at the BCCI after the Supreme Court's order.

"We are of the considered view that the amendment would not dilute the original objective. We accept the proposed amendment," said the bench led by Justice DY Chandrachud.

The 'cooling-off period' was one of the recommendations made by the Lodha Committee in 2018 for the better functioning of cricket's administrative body in India. However, Justice DY Chandrachud-led bench agreed that a cooling-off period after just one term in office will be 'too stringent'.

“A cooling-off period of three years after just one term of three years in office is really too stringent. People should be allowed to get acquainted… You will have networks, deal with international counterparts,” said Justice Chandrachud while examining BCCI's proposed changes in the constitution.

Sourav Ganguly, Jay Shah to continue on BCCI top posts as SC amends cooling-off provision

The Supreme Court on Thursday appointed senior advocate Maninder Singh as an amicus curiae to assist it in the matter related to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and fixed the hearing on the plea of the cricket body for amending its constitution concerning tenure of office bearers on July 28.

A bench comprising Chief Justice N V Ramana and Justices Krishna Murari and Hima Kohli took note of the fact that an earlier amicus curiae has now been elevated as a judge of the apex court. "We will appoint senior advocate Maninder Singh as an amicus in place of P S Narasimha (now Justice P S Narasimha)," said the bench and fixed the plea of BCCI for hearing on July 28.

The plea of the cricket body seeks to amend its constitution concerning the tenure of its office bearers including its President Sourav Ganguly and Secretary Jay Shah by doing away with the mandatory cooling-off period between tenures of office bearers across state cricket associations and the BCCI. Earlier, the Justice RM Lodha-led committee had recommended reforms in the BCCI which have been accepted by the top court.

According to the recommendations, there should be a three-year cooling-off period for the office bearers of the BCCI after a tenure of six years once a post comes to an end at the state cricket association or the BCCI level.

The BCCI, in its proposed amendment, has sought the abolition of a cooling-off period for its office bearers which would enable Ganguly and Shah to continue in office despite them having completed six years at respective state cricket associations.

The constitution of BCCI, which has been approved by the top court stipulates a mandatory three-year cooling-off period for anyone who had served two consecutive terms of three years each in the state cricket association or BCCI. While Ganguly was an office bearer in the Cricket Association of Bengal, Shah had served in the Gujarat Cricket Association.

Following the end of the IPL media rights auction, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah had made a big revelation that the board plans to extend the window for the cash-rich league from the next season, in order to have more international players available throughout an edition. Following this, reports were flowing in that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is unhappy with this development and is set to discuss the matter at ICC's board meeting, to be held later this year in Birmingham.

"From the next FTP cycle, IPL will have an official two-and-a-half-month window so that all the top international cricketers can participate. We have had discussions with various boards as well as the ICC," Shah had told PTI.

Thus, Pakistan Cricket Board's (PCB) chairman Ramiz Raja has now reacted to the proposed plan of extending the IPL window from next year. In this regard, the former Pakistan captain said during a media interaction on Friday (June 24), "There has been no announcement or decision as yet on the IPL window being increased. I will give my views on this issue at the ICC conference."

Ramiz has also opined on his plans of seeing India-Pakistan lock horns on the 22-yard cricket strip outside ICC tournaments. In this context, he had suggested for a multi-team tournament several times in the recent past. He revealed, "I have spoken to Sourav on the sidelines on this, and I told him that presently there are three former cricketers heading their cricket boards and if they can't make a difference, who will? Twice Ganguly has invited me to attend the IPL finals last year and this year, and cricketing-wise, it made sense to go, but then, because of the situation, we had to look at the fallout of accepting the invitations," he further added.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has bigger and better plans for the Indian Premier League (IPL) after pocketing a staggering amount of money for the tournament's media rights for the next five-year cycle. Disney Star and Viacom18 broke the bank to secure the TV and digital rights respectively for the next five seasons of IPL in India. The BCCI is now in talks with the International Cricket Council (ICC) to expand the IPL in the near future.

IPL is currently a 10-team tournament and consisted of a total of 77 matches in the 15th edition of the tournament this year.
