BCCI Secretary Jay Shah has promised a good '15-day gap' between IPL and World Test Championship&nbsp;(WTC) finals going ahead. The last two WTC finals -- since the championship came into the scene in late 2019 -- were held soon after IPL. Many criticised the narrow gap as India lost the two WTC finals with ease. Virat Kohli-led India lost the WTC 2021 final to New Zealand, by eigth&nbsp;wickets in Southampton, whereas Rohit Sharma &amp; Co. lost the 2023&nbsp;final to&nbsp;Australia by 209 runs at The Oval, London. The last WTC final kicked off on June 7, with the IPL 2023 finale&nbsp;ending&nbsp;in the wee hours of May 30.

Shah stated that Team India&nbsp;have&nbsp;always reached for the final on time irrespective of the IPL schedule and lauded them&nbsp;for making it to&nbsp;the finals on both occasions so far. He told TOI, "The team didn't reach late for previous WTC finals. We had no choice. From now on, we will be having a 15-day gap between the end of IPL and the WTC final. But we should also appreciate the fact that we have qualified for the final twice."

Ahead of the inaugural WTC final, held in 2021, that year's IPL came to a sudden halt due to the second wave of Covid-19 in India. Back then, the IPL was called off midway in early May and, hence, the&nbsp;national side got enough time to reach the United Kingdom, on June 3, and prepare&nbsp;post fulfilling the quarantine rules. They even played an intra-squad match. However, Kohli &amp; Co.&nbsp;lost to the Kiwis by eight wickets in Southampton.

Last year, the narrow gap between IPL and WTC final came to the forefront. The Indian players left in batches due to IPL 2023 and, thus, got&nbsp;lesser time to prepare and&nbsp;lost to Australia without much fight.

Questions have also been raised as to why the two WTC finals have been&nbsp;held in England and Wales only. The 2025 WTC final&nbsp;is also likely to be held in English conditions,&nbsp;although no venue has been confirmed as of now.

Looking at the WTC points table&nbsp;currently, India (win percentage of 68.52) and Australia (win percentage of 62.5) are favourites to meet once again in next year's finale.

The plan is set to lift Indian cricket for future generations as they will be equipped with world-class facilities. Since Jay Shah took over, the Indian cricket administration has taken a lift with pension schemes for former players and former umpires. The pensions were recently doubled for the retired umpires while funds for junior and women categories have also been increased. The launch of the Women’s Premier League (WPL), has also helped women’s cricket grow while U-19 teams have received huge appreciation.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Mohsin Naqvi is all set to become the next Asian Cricket Council (ACC) chief after current president Jay Shah's tenure gets over next year. The ACC has a rotation policy to select its chiefs and PCB is next in line for that.

The topic was also discussed in the recently concluded ACC meeting, where the hosts for the next two Asia Cups were also decided.

“When the ACC meets later this year, it will confirm that Naqvi will be the next president for a two-year term,” a source said about the next ACC chief, as reported by the news agency PTI.

“When Shah steps down the PCB chief will take over,” PTI further reported quoting the source.

As for the Asia Cup - the 2025 edition will be played in the T20 format in India as a precursor to the 2026 T20 World Cup, while the 2027 edition will be played in ODI format in Bangladesh, given the same format for the World Cup later that year.

It will surely be interesting to see if Pakistan also decides to play its matches in hybrid model instead of travelling to India for the Asia Cup next year.

In the 2023 edition, India had not travelled to the neighbouring country citing security reasons and its matches were played in Sri Lanka. BCCI secretary Jay Shah was the ACC chief last year and approved those changes.

Later that year, Pakistan travelled to India for the ODI World Cup despite early reluctance.&nbsp;

It is to be noted that Pakistan is also hosting the 2025 Champions Trophy, and reports of India's uncertainty over travelling to the host country are&nbsp;doing the rounds in the media.

The International Cricket Council (ICC), meanwhile, has put aside supplementary funds for the tournament in case India has to play its matches outside Pakistan, reported the news agency PTI.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has rejected new head coach Gautam Gambhir's all support staff choices, except one. Among the names suggested by Gambhir, only Abhishek Nayar was the only name approved for the role of batting coach by the Indian cricket board according to a report&nbsp;by Economics Times.

The names suggested by Gambhir were South African pacer Morne Morkel and former India bowler Lakshmipathy Balaji for the bowling coach role. For the fielding coach role, Netherlands' Ryan ten Doeschate and South African Jonty Rhodes were also named by Gambhir.

The BCCI, on the other hand, is reportedly keen to have former India pacer Zaheer Khan as the bowling coach while T Dilip, fielding coach under Rahul Dravid, is still the first choice for the role.

The board's stance is somewhat different from what has been seen in the tenure of previous coaches namely Ravi Shastri and Rahul Dravid. Both of them had the support staff of their choice.

Gambhir took over from Rahul Dravid after India's T20 World Cup glory. The former Indian opener has coaching experience in IPL and has led Kolkata Knight Riders to the title in the 2024 season as a mentor.

His first assignment will be the tour of Sri Lanka where India will play three T20Is on July 27, 28 and 30 to go with three ODIs on August 2, 4 and 7.

India is also looking for a new T20I skipper after Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from the format following India's T20 World Cup win.

As of now, Suryakumar Yadav is expected to be named India's T20I skipper and not Hardik Pandya for the upcoming white-ball tour of Sri Lanka.

Surya was India's skipper during the 4-1 T20I series win against Australia following the ODI World Cup 2023 and in the 1-1 drawn series against South Africa thereafter.&nbsp;

Jay Shah, BCCI secretary and the ‘most powerful man in world cricket’, as echoed by MCC President Mark Nicholas, is undecided on becoming the next ICC chairman despite strong rumours favouring him. Per the latest reports, Shah is looking forward to the annual Conference in Colombo from July 19 to 22. Following the date announcement, Shah has around three months to decide on his future.

Enjoying his role as a top-tier administrator in the world’s richest cricket board, Shah has been non-committal about his intentions of replacing New Zealand’s Greg Barclay as the new ICC chairman in November this year. Meanwhile, Barclay had Shah’s backing during the election for the coveted post four years ago.

Barclay is eligible for another term and would be interested in continuing in the job, but if Shah decides to contest the elections, he is sure of getting elected unopposed. If that happens, Shah will become the youngest ICC chairman.

Recently, the ICC brought in some changes to the chairman’s tenure, altering it from three terms of two years each to two terms of three years each. Upon being elected, Shah will chair the ICC for the next three years till 2027, becoming eligible to contest for BCCI’s presidency in 2028.

Meanwhile, the international media is talking about Shah taking over the ICC and, eventually, world cricket under his wraps. There were also reports of Shah wanting to shift the ICC headquarters from Dubai to Mumbai, with the latest reports squashing this, saying Shah has nothing on these lines on his agenda.

But the BCCI secretary is willing to bring changes to the ICC after what unfolded during the chaotic conduct of the 2024 T20 World Cup in the Americas. At the annual conference later this month, a formal announcement on the election's date will be announced.&nbsp;

In a one-minute-plus-long video, Shah congratulated the Men in Blue for this historic win in Barbados, where they beat South Africa by seven runs in the final. Shah dedicated Team India’s second world title to former coach Rahul Dravid and three players who announced their T20I retirements – Rohit, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja.

Shah said it was Team India’s third final in the last year. India lost the WTC Final (in June) and the 50-over World Cup Final a few months later in November to Australia on both occasions. Shah added after those two losses, he committed that the Rohit-led Indian Team would turn the tables in June this year in the T20 WC by winning it, which eventually happened.

He also congratulated the bowling attack that kept its cool and won the match from a losing position in the finale.

<h2>Rohit to lead in WTC and CT</h2>

Confirming Rohit Sharma’s participation as the Team India captain for the coming two ICC events scheduled in 2025 – the WTC Final and the Champions Trophy, Shah said he believes that under Rohit’s leadership, Team India will again stand tall in those tournaments and lift the respective trophies.

Meanwhile, India sits in the top position in the current WTC standings, with six wins from nine matches and a PCT of 68.52.&nbsp;

Considering India’s home season, which includes Test series against Bangladesh and New Zealand and an overseas tour Down Under, they have a stronger chance of staying at the top and qualifying for the WTC Final for the record third-straight time.

Besides, regarding the 2025 Champions Trophy in Pakistan next year, neither the Indian Govt. nor the BCCI have confirmed Team India’s participation, owing to tense relations between the two countries.&nbsp;

However, per the latest reports, should India travel to Pakistan, they will play all of their matches at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, including the semis and the finale, should they reach that far. Reports also suggest that India is placed in Group A alongside the hosts Pakistan, Bangladesh and New Zealand.&nbsp;

Shah added after those two losses, he committed that the Rohit-led Indian Team would turn the tables in June this year in the T20 WC by winning it, which eventually happened. He also congratulated the bowling attack that kept its cool and won the match from a losing position in the finale. Rohit to lead in WTC and CT Confirming Rohit Sharma’s participation as the Team India captain for the coming two ICC events scheduled in 2025 – the WTC Final and the Champions Trophy, Shah said he believes that under Rohit’s leadership, Team India will again stand tall in those tournaments and lift the respective trophies. Considering India’s home season, which includes Test series against Bangladesh and New Zealand and an overseas tour Down Under, they have a stronger chance of staying at the top and qualifying for the WTC Final for the record third-straight time. Besides, regarding the 2025 Champions Trophy in Pakistan next year, neither the Indian Govt. nor the BCCI have confirmed Team India’s participation, owing to tense relations between the two countries. However, per the latest reports, should India travel to Pakistan, they will play all of their matches at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, including the semis and the finale, should they reach that far. Reports also suggest that India is placed in Group A alongside the hosts Pakistan, Bangladesh and New Zealand. (With inputs from agencies)

Jay Shah confirms Rohit Sharma’s future as ODI, Test captain as 2025 WTC, Champions Trophy loom

Former India captain and batting great Sunil Gavaskar has slammed the critics of BCCI secretary Jay Shah, saying ‘political agendas’ stop them from praising Shah for his efforts as the board’s administrator. Gavaskar said since Jay Shah happens to be India’s Home Minister, Amit Shah’s son, people hesitate to credit him for lifting Indian cricket to the position it enjoys in world cricket today.

Gavaskar said Shah has played a significant role in the growth of Indian cricket, including ensuring equal pay for men’s and women’s teams, the launching of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) and much more.

Shah began his career in cricket administration with his stint at Gujarat Cricket Association before joining BCCI in 2015. After four years, in 2019, Shah was elected as the board’s secretary, taking the onus of Indian cricket into his hands and delivering since. Shah is also the Asian Cricket Council’s (ACC) President, responsible for the cricket operations in the Southeast Asian region.

Speaking to India Today, Gavaskar said he has always appreciated Shah’s work as an administrator as it helped promote cricket, not just Indian cricket, over the years. He didn’t mince&nbsp;words in&nbsp;admitting that differences in political opinions have restrained fans from giving due credit to Jay Shah for his ‘outstanding work’.

“Look, I think the quality of governance has always been such that they’ve aimed to promote Indian cricket,” Gavaskar said in a chat with India Today. “There will always be the occasional individual who might be a bit disappointing. But I think what the current leadership has done is quite outstanding.”

“Many people criticize Jay Shah, focusing on his father’s political position rather than his contributions. However, what Jay Shah has achieved—like bringing in the Women’s Premier League, ensuring equal pay for the Women’s team as the Men’s, increasing fees for IPL players, and significantly boosting incentives—is commendable. Unfortunately, some refuse to give him credit due to a political agenda,” Gavaskar continued.&nbsp;

<h2>‘Administration should be left to experts’</h2>

Gavaskar said not necessarily those who have played cricket will only take the game forward, instead those who are passionate about cricket are the ones to take extra yards to make this sport a success.

“From my experience, those who genuinely love cricket often do more for Indian cricket than those who have played it. This might be surprising, but people who are passionate about the game, even if they haven’t played at the highest level, tend to contribute more effectively when guided properly. Conversely, some former players sometimes remain fixated on their era, resisting changes that benefit the current generation,” Gavaskar said.

“So, I believe that while former cricketers are invaluable for addressing technical issues—like game rules and improving the Ranji Trophy’s competitiveness—the administration and financial management should be left to the experts,” he continued.

Political agendas stop people from praising Jay Shah as BCCI administrator, says Sunil Gavaskar

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah opened up on prospects of Hardik Pandya succeeding Rohit Sharma as India's T20I captain after the just-concluded 2024 T20 World Cup. After India beat South Africa by 7 runs in the T20 WC final, in Barbados on Saturday (June 29), to lift the coveted title for the second time, captain Rohit announced his T20I retirement. Thus, speculations are rife that Hardik will replace Rohit as the next Indian captain given he was leading in the shortest format when Hitman was away (from the 2022 T20 WC semifinal till end of 2023).

Shah said as quoted by Hindustan Times, "Captaincy will be decided by the selectors, and we will announce it after discussing with them. You asked about Hardik, there were lot of questions over his form but we and selectors showed faith in him and he proved himself."

<h2>HARDIK'S CAPTAINCY CREDENTIALS</h2>

Hardik has captained India in 16 T20Is, leading them to 10 victories. The star all-rounder -- who picked 11 wickets and scored 144 runs at 151.57 in the T20 WC 2024 edition -- has also led the national side in 3 ODIs. He led the Gujarat Titans (GT) to the IPL 2022 championship in their maiden season and took over as Mumbai Indians (MI) captain, replacing Rohit, after rejoining the franchise ahead of IPL 2024.

India's next assignment is a five-match T20I series versus Zimbabwe, in the African nation starting on July 6. Shubman Gill has been named the captain of the second-stringed side with many regulars being rested following the T20 WC in West Indies and USA. Following that, India will travel to Sri Lanka to play 3 T20Is and ODIs each.&nbsp;The new skipper is expected to be announced by then.

BCCI secretary Jay Shah has his say on Team India’s participation in the ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan next year, admitting the aim is to win all the ICC trophies and that the seniors will be there to win it for the Men in Blue. After Team India’s T20 World Cup triumph in the Caribbean, Shah wants to see the Rohit Sharma-led side win the Champions Trophy (India last won in 2013) and their maiden World Test Championship title.

Currently stranded in Barbados following the intense final against the Proteas, Shah said that considering the bench strength, which he calls the best and biggest in the world, shows how far India has come and is ahead of their competitors.&nbsp;

"I would want India to win all the titles. We have the biggest bench strength; only three players from this team are going to Zimbabwe. We can field three teams if the need arises," Shah said while speaking to reporters in Barbados.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"The way this team is progressing, our target is to win the World Test Championship final and Champions Trophy. There will be a similar squad playing there. The seniors will be there,” Shah added.

BCCI secretary Jay Shah announces $15 million prize money for Team India after T20 World Cup win

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) mentor Gautam Gambhir is reportedly inching closer to becoming the head coach of the Indian men’s cricket team after initial discussions with Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah.

Gambhir, who as a mentor led KKR to their third Indian Premier League (IPL) title on Sunday (May 26), could take over the reins of the side after the T20 World Cup as the BCCI is in no rush to announce Rahul Dravid’s successor.

<h2>Gambhir for India coach? What we know so far</h2>

KKR co-owner and Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan is aware of the meetings held by Gambhir and Jay Shah and will not stand in the way if the former decides to go.

According to reports, Gambhir is also interested in the role but wants to be assured of how much control he will have over the team.

According to Cricbuzz, both Shah and Gambhir held talks on Monday and Tuesday and the BCCI chief wants the former World Cup winner&nbsp;to accept the proposal.

<h2>
Who else is in the race to become the coach?</h2>

It was reported earlier that over 3,000 applications had been received by the BCCI, since the advertisement for the new head coach came out.

Current head coach Rahul Dravid has not applied for the role again after the May 27 deadline. Therefore, Dravid won’t take charge of the side post-T20 World Cup unless there is an emergency.

National Cricket Academy (NCA) chief VVS Laxman is another name doing the rounds,&nbsp;but he is reluctant to take charge.

According to Laxman, he is unlikely to be available for the demanding nature of the job which includes staying with the team for 10 months.

While there have been applications in the name of Sourav Ganguly and Virender Sehwag, those are most likely fake.

Gambhir for India coach? What we know so far KKR co-owner and Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan is aware of the meetings held by Gambhir and Jay Shah and will not stand in the way if the former decides to go. According to reports, Gambhir is also interested in the role but wants to be assured of how much control he will have over the team. According to Cricbuzz, both Shah and Gambhir held talks on Monday and Tuesday and the BCCI chief wants the former World Cup winner to accept the proposal. Who else is in the race to become the coach? It was reported earlier that over 3,000 applications had been received by the BCCI, since the advertisement for the new head coach came out. Current head coach Rahul Dravid has not applied for the role again after the May 27 deadline. Therefore, Dravid won’t take charge of the side post-T20 World Cup unless there is an emergency. National Cricket Academy (NCA) chief VVS Laxman is another name doing the rounds, but he is reluctant to take charge. According to Laxman, he is unlikely to be available for the demanding nature of the job which includes staying with the team for 10 months. While there have been applications in the name of Sourav Ganguly and Virender Sehwag, those are most likely fake. Will Gautam Gambhir be Team India coach? Is he leaving KKR after talks with Jay Shah? Latest developments

BCCI secretary Jay Shah has discussed the Indian men's cricket team head coach job with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) mentor Gautam Gambhir, according to a report in Cricbuzz.

BCCI secretary Jay Shah has discussed the Indian men's cricket team head coach job with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) mentor Gautam Gambhir, according to a report in Cricbuzz. The former Indian cricketer's stock has risen in recent weeks after he guided KKR to a third title with the top BCCI official keen to bring him in as Rahul Dravid's successor. Shah and Gambhir share the belief that the former Indian batter should take up the job to serve the country, the report noted. 'Desh ke liye karna hai' [We must do it for the country] has been the catchphrase that has come out of their meeting which shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone as Gambhir has always worn nationalism on his sleeve. Gambhir is known for his strict demeanour and has batted against the star culture prevalent in the current Indian cricketing setup. Both Gambhir and Shah were also seen involved in an animated discussion post KKR's final victory on Sunday (May 26). The report noted that Gambhir had already told those close to him, including KKR owner Shah Rukh Khan that he was seriously considering the job offer. After KKR won the title, reports surfaced that the Bollywood star had offered a blank cheque to Gambhir in order to retain him for the franchise. Also read | Narendra Modi, MS Dhoni, Amit Shah: Fake applicants use famous names for India head coach job Gambhir to take up the job? If Gambhir does take the Indian job, he would not be the first person from the KKR backroom staff to have been poached. Trevor Bayliss, who led KKR to victory in 2012 and 2014, was poached by England and Wales Cricket Board's Director of Cricket Andrew Strauss at the time. Similarly, Matthew Mott and Brendon McCullum were picked up by the ECB when they had successful stints with KKR. BCCI started its hunt for the new coach on May 13 by opening the application process. The job description stated that the candidate should be below 60 years of age and must have played a minimum of 30 Tests or 50 ODIs. It added that the applicant should have performed a similar role as a full member of Test nation for a minimum of two years. "The selection process will include a thorough review of applications, followed by personal interviews and assessments of shortlisted candidates." Gambhir ticks all the boxes and could be the one who ultimately takes up the job. The only hindrance could be Gambhir's young family as the job would require him to be on the road for nearly 10 months in a year, up until 2027. (With inputs from agencies)

IPL 2024: Lucrative monetary benefit announced for groundsmen and curators by BCCI

Team India head coach job is doing the round nowadays. The senior men's cricket team's current coach Rahul Dravid's tenure will come to an end following the 2024 T20 World Cup, in the West Indies and USA in June. As the deadline to apply for the top post is May 27, there have been several reports which have mentioned that the BCCI have&nbsp;approached some big names to consider taking the elite job.

Reportedly,&nbsp;Ricky Ponting, Justin Langer, Stephen Fleming, Gautam Gambhir,&nbsp;are some of the names on BCCI's radar. Recently, Ponting revealed that there were a few little one-on-one conversations during the IPL' to know his interest for the job, which he doesn't want at present.

However, BCCI Secretary Jay&nbsp;Shah&nbsp;cleared the air by saying that no Australian has been approached by him, or the board. His comments have added a new twist to the tale.&nbsp;

The BCCI Secretary said in a statement, "Neither I nor the BCCI have approached any former Australian cricketer with a coaching offer. The reports circulating in certain media sections are completely incorrect. Finding the right coach for our national team is a meticulous and thorough process. We are focused on identifying individuals who possess a deep understanding of the Indian cricket structure and have risen through the ranks. It’s crucial that our coach has an in-depth knowledge of our domestic cricket framework to truly elevate Team India to the next level."

Shah further opined, "When we talk about international cricket, no role is more prestigious than that of the Head Coach of the Indian Cricket Team. Team India commands the largest fan base globally, enjoying support that is truly unrivalled. Our rich history, passion for the game make this one of the most lucrative jobs in the world."

He added, "The role demands a high level of professionalism as one gets to nurture some of the best cricketers in the world and an assembly line of talented cricketers to follow. India head coach job: Jay Shah confirms BCCI have not approached any Australian cricketer for top post

India and RCB legend Virat Kohli has backed his teammate Rohit Sharma in bashing the ‘Impact Player’ rule, saying it kills the balance between bat and ball. Kohli leads the run-scoring chart with over 600 runs in 13 contested matches this season, striking at over 155. Although he admitted that this season was slightly more exciting than previous editions, mostly because of that, the Indian legend pin-pointed the loopholes in this newest addition to the Indian Premier League. During an exclusive chat with Jio Cinema ahead of the marquee IPL 2024 clash between the RCB and CSK in Bengaluru, Kohli said he likes the idea of making this game a bit more entertaining by introducing such rules but rues that its impact is killing the balance. “I agree with Rohit. Entertainment is one aspect of the game, but there is no balance,” Kohli said on Jio Cinema. ALSO READ: ‘Biggest job in cricket but exhausting’ – Justin Langer on Team India’s head coach role Last month, former Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma was the first star figure to come out with his view on this new rule, saying it has reduced the importance of all-rounders in the team – a crucial aspect in any format. Besides, cricket legend and Delhi Capitals head coach Ricky Ponting also came hard on the Impact Player rule, saying it’s a nightmare for the coaches and the captains. “Bowlers are feeling like what they should do,” Kohli said. “We are playing a high level of cricket, and it should not be that dominant in my opinion. There is a beauty about having an equal balance between bat and ball,” he continued. ‘It helped a bit though’ While Kohli sounded sceptical about Impact Player rule’s future in the tournament, he admitted to making the most of it anyway. Like every team, his franchise also gets a chance to play an extra batter, and Kohli upped his game, playing at a strike rate of over 200 in the first six overs. “Not every team has a Bumrah (Jasprit) or the mystery of Rashid Khan,” he said. “I am telling you, with one extra batter, there is a reason I am playing with 200 plus strike rate in the Powerplays. I know there is a batsman waiting at No. 8 as well.” “I think it has disrupted the balance, and a lot of people are feeling this way not just me,” he added. Meanwhile, RCB needs to beat CSK to qualify for the IPL 2024 playoffs.

IPL 2024: Kohli backs Rohit in bashing ‘Impact Player’ rule, says entertainment is fine but it kills balance

The BCCI secretary Jay Shah has picked his final four for the upcoming 2024 T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and the USA, excluding the defending champions England and India’s arch-rivals Pakistan.

The BCCI secretary Jay Shah has picked his final four for the upcoming 2024 T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and the USA, excluding the defending champions England and India’s arch-rivals Pakistan. Shah also touched upon the most talked-about ‘Impact Player’ rule in IPL 2024, further weighing on the yardsticks considered during team selection for the marquee events. Following the heartbreak India suffered at the hands of Australia in the home World Cup final last year, India geared up for the upcoming 20-team tournament starting June 2, aiming to end their ICC trophy drought. However, Rohit Sharma-led Indian Team will open their campaign against Ireland on June 5 before taking on Pakistan in the marquee clash on June 9 in New York. Co-hosts USA and Canada are the remaining two teams in Group A. In an exclusive chat with the Times of India (TOI), Shah named his four semi-finalists, including the Men in Blue and favourites India. “India, Australia, New Zealand and the hosts, West Indies, because they are good in T20,” Shah picked his final four at the T20 World Cup. ALSO READ: IPL 2024: ‘I am not a result–oriented captain’ – Pandya reflects on debut stint as MI skipper While the star power and exploits in world cricket makes India the team to beat, former winners West Indies and Australia will also threaten all participating nations. Including New Zealand makes sense as they walk into any ICC tournament with the tag of favourites. When asked about the yardstick behind picking the team for the ICC tournaments, Shah said the teams are not picked alone on IPL performance, as international exposure and experience also count. His remarks have somewhat backed the selection of under-fire India captain Rohit Sharma and veteran batter Virat Kohli, who was under the radar for his strike rate in the shortest format. Speaking on the team balance for the T20 WC, Shah said, “It has a good balance between form and experience. The selectors cannot choose on the basis of IPL performance alone, as overseas experience is also necessary.” Shah’s remarks on ‘Impact Player’ rule Impact Player rule is a controversial topic, with several cricketing greats including former Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma and Delhi Capitals coach Ricky Ponting bashing this latest introduction to IPL, calling it the nightmare for the coaches and the captains. Shah differed on the issue, saying it’s a test case, and that the board is consulting players, teams and all parties concerned about their thought on the same. Although he accepts that the contest is getting exciting with this, upon receiving disapproval over its use, they can make changes to it. “It's a test case. We are consulting players, franchisees and all concerned. I feel the matches are getting more interesting, more Indian players are getting a chance to play. If our consultations reveal dissatisfaction, we will change it,” he said.

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) head coach Justin langer has not ruled out throwing his hat in the ring to be Rahul Dravid's successor. Dravid's contract as the head coach of the&nbsp;men's senior national team expires after the T20 World Cup and BCCI has invited applications from prospective candidates for the position.

Langer said he was "curious" about the head coach position, adding that it would be an extraordinary role, in an interview with Times of India.&nbsp;

“Well, I am curious. I’ve never ever thought about it. I have deep respect for any international coach because I understand the pressure, but coaching the Indian team would be an extraordinary role. From what I’ve seen with the amount of talent I’ve seen in this country, it would be fascinating,” Langer was quoted as saying by the publication.&nbsp;

“I went straight from playing to coaching – as an assistant coach, which is the best coach job in the world. You work about two hours a day, everyone’s your best friend, and you’ve got no accountability. Then you become head coach, oh man, then you work about 16 hours a day. No one likes you. And you’ve got 100% accountability!" he added.

Prior to being LSG&nbsp;coach, Langer served as Australia's men's team head coach for nearly four years. He took the job in the aftermath of the Sandpaper Gate with the Australian team in turmoil.

Although Australia lost the home Test series to India twice in his tenure, Langer managed to correct the ship and guided the team to 2021 T20 World Cup win whilst retaining the Ashes on two separate occasions viz. 2019 and 2021.&nbsp;

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah has opened up on the omission of Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan from the central contract.&nbsp;Speaking at a press conference on Tursday (May 10) he said the decision to drop the players was not his but of&nbsp;chief selector Ajit Agarkar.

Both Ishan and Shreyas were dropped from the annual contracts of the BCCI before the Indian Premier League (IPL 2024) season began for lack of priority towards domestic cricket.&nbsp;The two cricketers also pulled out of international or domestic duties on several occasions&nbsp;which&nbsp;led&nbsp;to them getting dropped from the contract.&nbsp;

<h2>Shah opens the lid on Ishan,&nbsp;Shreyas</h2>

"You can check the constitution. I am just a convener (of the selection meeting),"&nbsp;he said during a media interaction at the BCCI head office.&nbsp;"That decision lies with Ajit Agarkar, even&nbsp;when these two players (Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer) did not play domestic (cricket), the decision to drop them (from the central contracts list) was only his. My role is&nbsp;just&nbsp;to implement. And we have&nbsp;got&nbsp;new players (in place), like Sanju (Samson). Nobody is indispensable,"&nbsp;he added.

Ishan in December chose&nbsp;to pull out of the Test series against South Africa despite being fit as he was reluctant to play second fiddle to KL Rahul in the&nbsp;wicketkeeper’s&nbsp;role. He was later spotted partying in a Dubai hotel during his&nbsp;brother’s&nbsp;birthday despite having sighted medical issues for pulling out of the South Africa tour.&nbsp;

Speaking at a press conference on Tursday (May 10) he said the decision to drop the players was not his but of chief selector Ajit Agarkar. Both Ishan and Shreyas were dropped from the annual contracts of the BCCI before the Indian Premier League (IPL 2024) season began for lack of priority towards domestic cricket. The two cricketers also pulled out of international or domestic duties on several occasions which led to them getting dropped from the contract. Shah opens the lid on Ishan, Shreyas "You can check the constitution. I am just a convener (of the selection meeting)," he said during a media interaction at the BCCI head office. "That decision lies with Ajit Agarkar, even when these two players (Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer) did not play domestic (cricket), the decision to drop them (from the central contracts list) was only his. My role is just to implement. And we have got new players (in place), like Sanju (Samson). Nobody is indispensable," he added. Ishan in December chose to pull out of the Test series against South Africa despite being fit as he was reluctant to play second fiddle to KL Rahul in the wicketkeeper’s role. He was later spotted partying in a Dubai hotel during his brother’s birthday despite having sighted medical issues for pulling out of the South Africa tour. However, according to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) report, he was fit to participate for India and Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy season. Though Shreyas returned to play for Mumbai in their title-winning run, Ishan opted to stay away from Jharkhand’s Ranji Trophy season and was preparing for the IPL 2024. The situation did not go well with the BCCI and its selectors with both Shreyas and Ishan getting dropped from the annual contract.

'Decision lies with Agarkar': Jay Shah on Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan's omission from BCCI contract

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to release an advertisement for a new head coach for the senior men's team, as disclosed by the board secretary Jay Shah in Mumbai on Wednesday (May 8). It is to be noted that Rahul Dravid -- the current head coach -- accepted the offer to extend his original contract till June this year. Hence, his contract will expire after the end of India's campaign in the forthcoming T20 World Cup 2024 in West Indies and the USA.

<h2>'If Dravid wants to apply, he is free to do so'</h2>

"Rahul's tenure is only up to June. So if he wants to apply, he is free to do so," the BCCI secretary said. Meanwhile other members of the coaching staff -- such as batting, bowling, and fielding coaches -- will be decided after consultation with the new coach.

Notably, Shah did not rule out the possibility of recruiting a foreign coach and left the issue open-ended.

"We cannot determine whether the new coach will be Indian or foreign. It will be up to the CAC, and we are a global body," the BCCI official said, indicating that the board is not likely to consider different coaches for different formats, a system adopted by boards such as the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) in recent times.

Shah added, "That decision will also be made by the CAC. There are many all-format players, like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Rishabh Pant, among others. Moreover, there is no precedent for such a situation in India."

The BCCI secretary has confirmed that the new coach will serve for a long term, for an initial period of three years at least.

Dravid took the coaching job in late 2021, succeeding Ravi Shastri.

Under him, India reached the WTC final in 2023 and the ODI World Cup final later that year. India also reached the semifinals of the 2022 T20 World Cup and will be desperate to end their ICC-trophy drought in the next edition of the marquee event.&nbsp;

Irrespective of his next move, Dravid will be eager to sign off his current term on a high, leading India to their second T20 WC triumph in the 2024 edition in June.

India’s World Cup winner&nbsp;Kirti Azad’s latest social media post has created quite a stir in the cricket circuit surrounding speculations on Virat Kohli’s future in T20I cricket. Taking to the micro-blogging website X (previously known as Twitter), Azad revealed that BCCI secretary Jay Shah had asked chief selector Ajit Agarkar to convince others to drop Kohli for the T20 World Cup (to be held in June in the Caribbean and the USA).

'Pant might play T20 World Cup if he...': BCCI secretary Jay Shah drops major hint

Cricket is changing for good, or probably not. From considering Tests as THE format for a good hundred years to putting it in the category of something that is dying a slow death, cricket has evolved quite a lot in recent years. Many worldwide pundits, commentators and even analysts, alongside the decision-makers in the ICC and MCC, have tried to restore the game’s oldest format's pride, but none seemed to have cracked the code.

So, how does anyone get there?&nbsp;

Does playing more Tests, reducing the number, or hoping against hope that the T20 format doesn’t kill it completely, make any difference?&nbsp;

Well, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah has it seems found a solution, recommended by Men’s National Team chief selector Ajit Agarkar, called the "Test Cricket Incentive Scheme".

<h2>What happens under this scheme?</h2>

Following India’s famous win in the fifth and the final Test of the home series against England in Dharamsala on Saturday (March 9), Shah posted on his social media handle (X, previously known as Twitter) launching the new scheme that provides Test regulars, who will play more than 75% of the matches scheduled in a season, with a whopping incentive on their match fees.

Considering this scheme will come into effect retrospectively from the 2022-23 season, someone like Cheteshwar Pujara, who played seven out of the nine matches that season (77.7%), will earn INR 45 lakhs per match in addition to his match fee of INR 15 lakhs per game, making it INR 60 lakhs per game. In his case, the sum amounts to INR 4.2 crore (including incentives), compared to INR 1.05 crore he would have earned as a reward for prioritising Test cricket.&nbsp;

The BCCI secretary revealed the purpose behind this, saying this "step aimed at providing financial growth and stability" to Test players.

Meanwhile, under this scheme, all those players featuring in 50-75% of Tests in a season will earn INR 30 lakh per Test (outside of their match fees), while those who play less than 50% of the slated games will not be eligible for the benefits under the scheme. This incentive, however, isn't linked to BCCI's annual retainers, which is a separate component.

The BCCI, in a statement, said, "This scheme is not only designed to encourage players to engage in the purest format of the sport but also addresses the evolving dynamics of the cricketing landscape, ensuring parity with match fees in other formats and league cricket."

<h3>How can this change cricket’s dynamics in India first and then worldwide?</h3>

It is not a hidden fact that BCCI is perhaps the most powerful of all cricket boards for the revenue they generate (to pocket 38.5% of the money earned by the ICC), which is heads and shoulders ahead of the second-placed England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), which will earn $41 million out of $600 million the ICC is set to make in the next financial cycle.

Now, with how BCCI influences boards on countless grounds, inspiring to save Tests being one of them, this initiative will bring wholesome changes to the mentality of the budding cricketers on making the right calls to prioritise playing Tests rather than running behind money by featuring in franchise-based T20 leagues worldwide.

However, with this scheme coming into action, a sea of changes in the mindset is expected to take centrestage in India, and, who knows, if successful, other boards might follow the same path to ensure their best players are playing Tests, helping it to get back where it belonged.

There is always something that leads to something revolutionary. From the Indian cricket perspective, the crucial case of Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer led the BCCI’s decision-makers to launch this scheme.

So, how does anyone get there? Does playing more Tests, reducing the number, or hoping against hope that the T20 format doesn’t kill it completely, make any difference? Well, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah has it seems found a solution, recommended by Men’s National Team chief selector Ajit Agarkar, called the "Test Cricket Incentive Scheme". What happens under this scheme? Following India’s famous win in the fifth and the final Test of the home series against England in Dharamsala on Saturday (March 9), Shah posted on his social media handle (X, previously known as Twitter) launching the new scheme that provides Test regulars, who will play more than 75% of the matches scheduled in a season, with a whopping incentive on their match fees. ALSO READ: BCCI secretary Jay Shah introduces ‘incentive scheme’ to protect and promote Test cricket in India Considering this scheme will come into effect retrospectively from the 2022-23 season, someone like Cheteshwar Pujara, who played seven out of the nine matches that season (77.7%), will earn INR 45 lakhs per match in addition to his match fee of INR 15 lakhs per game, making it INR 60 lakhs per game. In his case, the sum amounts to INR 4.2 crore (including incentives), compared to INR 1.05 crore he would have earned as a reward for prioritising Test cricket. The BCCI secretary revealed the purpose behind this, saying this "step aimed at providing financial growth and stability" to Test players. Explained – How BCCI’s new ‘incentive scheme’ initiative will change cricket dynamics in India

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah has introduced a new incentive scheme to reward cricketers who will prioritise playing Test cricket. As per the new scheme, if a cricketer plays more than 75% of Test matches in a season, he shall be rewarded with an increment of 300% in his overall match fees.

According to&nbsp;reports, the Ajit Agarkar-led selection panel had recommended this incentive scheme to encourage cricketers to give importance to first-class cricket.&nbsp;

The BCCI secretary posted an image on his social media handle X, previously known as Twitter, citing an example of how this scheme will work and under what circumstances the players will receive the incentive.&nbsp;

Shah shared that the 'Test Cricket Incentive Scheme' for the senior men's team&nbsp;will give players extra incentive other than the usual match fees for&nbsp;taking part in the longest format of the game.

As this new scheme is backdated to include the 2022-23 season, someone like Cheteshwar Pujara, who played seven of the nine contested matches (77.7%) that season, will earn INR 45 lakh per Test in addition to his match fee of INR 15 lakh per Test. For prioritising Test cricket, the BCCI will reward Pujara with a total sum of INR 4.2 crores (including incentives), as against INR 1.05 crores, which he previously earned in one season.

This scheme has come into action after the Indian board took action against two top stars – Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer, for ignoring playing Ranji Trophy despite directives from the BCCI.&nbsp;

Following BCCI’s second warning to all centrally contracted players who are neither picked for any squad nor getting treated at the NCA for any injury, which included Ishan and Iyer, the board left them out of the central contract list for the upcoming season, punishing them for not abiding by the board’s instructions.

However, with this scheme taking centre stage, several players will be keen on pushing to play for India in the longest format as against choosing to play franchise-based T20 Leagues for extra money.

BCCI secretary Jay Shah introduces ‘incentive scheme’ to protect and promote Test cricket in India

BCCI secretary Jay Shah has written to top India cricketers, including Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer and Deepak Chahar, to abide by the board's latest directive of centrally contracted players and make&nbsp;themselves available for domestic red-ball tournaments. Shah took action after all three mentioned players failed to appear for their state teams' Ranji Trophy matches despite clear instructions.

Per the latest reports, Shah, in his letter to the players, who are neither picked for any Indian squad nor are getting treated for any injury at the NCA, reminded them of domestic cricket still being the yardstick for selection in the Indian Team and not the IPL.&nbsp;

With the growing concern within the board and fans throughout the country of IPL referred to as the new selection ground, Shah cleared the air, saying domestic cricket hasn't lost its place in line.&nbsp;

Shah addressed the elephant in the room of IPL eating up domestic cricket’s space in India. He said that no one anticipated this shift among emerging players opting for IPL over playing domestic tournaments; Shah added that the Ranji Trophy remains the very foundation on which Indian cricket stood and has thrived over the years.&nbsp;

“There is a recent trend that has started to emerge and is a cause for concern. Some players have begun prioritising the IPL over domestic cricket, a shift that was not anticipated. Domestic cricket has always been the foundation upon which Indian cricket stands, and it has never been undervalued in our vision for the sport,” Shah said in the letter.

<h2>‘Our vision is clear’</h2>

Shah added that any budding player aspiring to wear the India jersey must do well in domestic cricket, and there are no two ways about it.

“Our vision for Indian cricket has been clear from the outset – every cricketer aspiring to play for India must prove themselves in domestic cricket. Performance in domestic cricket remains a critical yardstick for selection, and non-participation in domestic cricket will carry severe implications,” the BCCI secretary wrote.

Ishan Kishan took a break from cricket following the South Africa ODIs in December last year, citing mental fatigue. Per the latest reports, Ishan was in Baroda training with Hardik Pandya - the newly-appointed Mumbai Indians captain in the IPL. Though the board had asked him to appear for his Ranji Team (Jharkhand), Kishan didn’t for reasons unknown.&nbsp;

On the other hand, India batter Shreyas Iyer, who failed to make it to the squad for the remaining three England Tests, also didn’t show up for Mumbai for their ongoing Ranji game against Assam at home.&nbsp;

Citing examples of how senior and celebrated Indian cricketers in the past used to take pride in playing domestic cricket, Shah wrote,

“Legends like Sunil Gavaskar exemplified this dedication, playing club cricket the morning they arrived from an international tour. Domestic cricket was seen not just as a commitment but as a responsibility and a source of pride.”

Domestic cricket still the yardstick for selection - Jay Shah warns top players over skipping Ranji ties

BCCI secretary&nbsp;Jay Shah&nbsp;didn’t mince&nbsp;words while asserting authority as to who the boss around is. Speaking to the media recently, Shah said all IPL teams will abide by the latest guidelines around workload management of T20 World Cup-bound players.&nbsp;

A day after confirming that Rohit Sharma will continue leading the Indian Team in the 20-team tournament in the Caribbean and the USA, Shah said every franchise has to follow the directives laid by the BCCI, underlining the importance of workload management with a larger goal in mind of winning the T20 World Cup.&nbsp;

"After the (2023) World Cup, Rahul bhai had to leave for the South Africa tour immediately. We did not get to meet in between, which finally happened today." Shah further asserted, "Why are you worried about a contract for such a senior person like Rahul Dravid? Rahul bhai will remain the coach in the T20 World Cup,” he added.

BCCI is bigger than all IPL franchises: Jay Shah on teams following guidelines on players workload management

On the eve of the Rajkot Test between India and England, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary Jay Shah confirmed that Rohit Sharma will captain India in the forthcoming T20 World Cup 2024 edition, to be held in West Indies and USA. At an event in the Rajkot, which saw the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium being renamed to Niranjan Shah Stadium on Wednesday (Feb 14), Shah confirmed that Hitman will lead the Men in Blue in the mega event which starts in early June. India are placed in Group A with Pakistan, USA, Canada and Ireland.

After the announcement from Shah, former Indian spinner Anil Kumble said that he isn't surprised with the call. Speaking to Sports18, Kumble pointed out, "The Rohit Sharma announcement, I don't think was a surprise because I certainly believe that we need that stability, especially at the top. Rohit is someone who has done exceptionally well as India's captain."

Kumble added, "His T20 form in the IPL hasn't been special in the last couple of years but he's a quality player. We saw against Afghanistan, when the team was struggling a bit he came and scored that wonderful hundred. It's important you have that kind of stability going into the T20 World Cup."

Rohit -- a white-ball legend -- had not featured in India's T20I setup since their 2022 T20 World Cup semifinal loss&nbsp;to eventual winners England in Adelaide. He returned to the shortest format after 14 months during India's three T20Is versus Afghanistan, at home, early this year. The series also saw Virat Kohli's return to the format, after an equal number of months. Shah also opined on Kohli's spot with regard to the T20 WC. He said, "We will talk about him [soon]."

Kohli is currently on a break from international cricket due to personal reasons and has not featured in India's ongoing home Tests versus England. On Thursday (Feb 15), India and England locked horns on Day 1 of the third Test in Rajkot. Opting to bat first, India went to lunch at 93/3 with captain Rohit surpassing the 50-run mark for the first time in the series. The five-match series is currently level&nbsp;at 1-1.

The five-match series is currently level at 1-1.

Anil Kumble not 'surprised' with Rohit Sharma confirmed to lead India in T20 World Cup! Here's why -

Rohit Sharma will continue to lead India at the 2024 T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and the USA (in June), BCCI secretary Jay Shah confirmed on the eve of the third India-England Test in Rajkot. Shah said Rohit has everyone's backing within the dressing room and the board, adding future captain Hardik Pandya will be his deputy in this tournament.

After replacing Virat Kohli as the all-format skipper in late 2021, Rohit captained Team India at the 2022 T20 WC in Australia, where they lost to England by ten wickets in the semis. Under his leadership, India played the World Test Championship (WTC) and the 2023 World Cup final (at home), losing to Australia on both occasions.&nbsp;

Rohit remained unavailable for selection in the T20Is since the Adelaide semis loss, only to return during the Afghanistan T20Is earlier this year. Rohit’s selection in that series indicated who will lead India in the marquee event later in the year.

"The fact that he was returning after a year to lead in the Afghanistan series recently meant he was obviously going to [lead in the T20 World Cup]," Shah said during an event in Rajkot on Wednesday (Feb 14).&nbsp;

While backing Rohit to break the ice (of India winning an ICC tournament), Shah confirmed Pandya’s role in the team for the T20 World Cup.

"In T20s, Hardik will be the captain for certain [in the future],” Shah said.

"Rohit has the ability, we know. As he showed in the ODI World Cup, where we won 10 matches in a row until the final. I am confident that India will lift the 2024 T20 World Cup under Rohit Sharma's captaincy in Barbados,” the BCCI&nbsp;secretary added.

<h2>Shah opens on Virat Kohli’s T20I future</h2>

Jay Shah also commented on the noise around Virat Kohli for a) the reason behind missing the England Tests, and b) will he play the T20 World Cup?

On Virat missing the home series against England, Shah said that a man who is the first to raise his hand whenever the team needs him should be left alone if he’s asked for some space (probably for the first time in his career).&nbsp;

"If a person, for the first time in a 15-year career, asks for personal leave, it's his right. Virat is not a player who will ask for leave for no reason. We need to trust our player and back him,” Shah said.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, on Virat Kohli’s T20I future, Shah said, "We will talk about him [soon]."
