On Wednesday in Bali, where several topics were on the discussion table, Shah was unanimously elected for his third consecutive stint as the chairman of the ACC. His first two stints have seen the ACC handle critical matters of COVID-19 and successfully arrange the Asia Cup and the U19 Asia Cup. The 2023 Asian Cup played in Pakistan and Sri Lanka was a critical matter of discussion and Shah successfully managed to conduct the competition.

With India’s stance of not traveling to Pakistan for the Asia Cup, Shah and his team successfully negotiated a formula to stage the tournament. Sri Lanka offers apology to BCCI secretary Jay Shah for remarks made by former skipper Arjuna Ranatunga

Former Sri Lanka captain Arjuna Ranatunga has taken a dig at Jay Shah, saying the BCCI secretary is responsible for running and ruining Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC). The comment by the1996 World Cup-winning captain comes days after the International Cricket Council (ICC) suspended SLC for excessive political interference.

“Because of the connection between SLC officials and Jay Shah, they (the BCCI) are under the impression that they can trample and control SLC,” Ranatunga was quoted as saying by Daily Mirror.

“Jay Shah is running Sri Lanka Cricket. SLC is being ruined because of pressure from Jay Shah. One man in India is ruining Sri Lankan cricket. He is only powerful because of his father, who is India’s home minister," said Ranatunga referring to Amit Shah, a member of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's cabinet.

Ranatunga is a key figure in the middle of a power tussle within the SLC. Earlier this month, Sri Lanka's sports minister Roshan Ranasinghe sacked SLC board and installed an interim committee headed by Arjuna Ranatunga.

Ranasinghe cited widespread corruption charges as the main reason for the suspension of the entire board. However, the decision was quashed by Sri Lanka's Court of Appeal, which also restored the officials pending further inquiry, after SLC President Shammi Silva went to the judiciary body.

ODI World Cup 2023: BCCI announces free drinking water for all fans at stadiums

The five matches of Super Four stage of the ongoing Asia Cup 2023 will be hosted in Colombo as originally scheduled. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), however, seems to be miffed with the decision and the manner in which the decision was taken by the Asian Cricket Council (ACC). The PCB, nonetheless, has agreed to the decision.

The drama of shifting matches out of Colombo, preferably to Hambantota, started after the blockbuster game between India and Pakistan was washed out after the first innings on September 2. The ACC too was mulling shifting the remaining games, including the final, to Hambantota with a rain warning in Colombo in the upcoming days.

ACC president Jay Shah, however, sent an email on Tuesday, September 5 afternoon to members that Colombo will continue to be the host for the remaining matches in Sri Lanka, which irked the PCB, reported ESPNCricinfo. Sri Lanka Cricket's chief executive Ashley de Silva also spoke to ESPNCricinfo and said that the reason ACC opted to keep matches in Colombo is because "a lot of fans had already made arrangements to watch the matches in Colombo" and "the last few days it hasn't been raining as much" in Colombo.

The PCB, during the initial discussions, while selecting a co-host after BCCI refused to play due to government permission issues, had pitched UAE as an option. ACC president Shah, meanwhile, released a statement on Tuesday, September 5, which gave the reason for not accepting PCB's option.

"The Asia Cup 2022 edition was played in the UAE in the T20 format. It's important to emphasise that the dynamics of a T20 tournament cannot be directly compared to those of a 100-over One-day format. In this context, ACC members received feedback from their respective high-performance teams, expressing concerns about playing one-day matches in the UAE in the month of September. Such a schedule could have potentially led to player fatigue and an increased risk of injuries, particularly right before the all-important ICC Cricket World Cup," read the statement.

Nonetheless, the drama seems to be over now with the Super Four stage kicking off on September 6 in Lahore - the last match in the country - when Pakistan take on Bangladesh.

Asia Cup: Colombo to remain host for remaining Super Four games and final as scheduled

The Asia Cup 2023 edition is underway. The multi-nation competition finally started on August 30 in Multan, Pakistan with Babar Azam-led Men in Green thrashing Nepal by 238 runs. In the second game, in Sri Lanka, the home side beat Bangladesh by five wickets on Thursday (August 31). In the two games, as well as during India's team photo shoot, many observed that Pakistan's name was missing from the team jerseys.

It is to be noted that Pakistan remain the original hosts despite nine out of 13 games being held in Sri Lanka. The 2023 edition is being held in a hybrid model -- for the first time in Asia Cup's history -- after India made it clear that they won't travel to Pakistan due to strained relations. Last year's edition was held in the UAE but Sri Lanka remained the original hosts and their name was mentioned in team jerseys (below the Asia Cup's logo). However, eyebrows have been raised with the same trend not being followed this year.

Asia Cup: ACC, PCB blasted by ex-cricketers and fans after Pakistan's name goes missing from team jerseys

Following reports of Pakistan deciding to play its 2023 World Cup group stage matches in Bangladesh in a reciprocal response to BCCI’s decision to play its 2023 Asia Cup matches in UAE instead of Pakistan, which is the official host, the ICC has put all such talks under the mat. Previous reports suggested that this call was taken during the recent ICC meeting in Dubai; however, after reaching out to the game’s governing body for the same, they bashed this information, calling it a 'figment of imagination'.

"No one knows if PCB chief Mr Najam Sethi has had any informal discussions with his Bangladeshi counterpart Najmul Hasan Papon, but this can be said with a degree of certainty that no such discussions happened officially that Pakistan will play in Bangladesh," an ICC board source privy to the developments told PTI on the condition of anonymity.

The source close to this information further added that BCCI, on its part, has provided assurance about providing visas to their Pakistani counterparts for the World Cup. The ICC source also cleared the air relating to Bangladesh co-hosting the World Cup in the abovementioned scenario, saying they are not even in the scheme of things.

ICC bashes reports of Pakistan playing its 2023 World Cup matches in Bangladesh

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah confirmed the 2023 World Cup schedule will undergo a few changes, with the revised schedule to be finalised in consultation with the ICC in a few days. This decision comes after reports suggested the marquee clash between India and Pakistan will be rescheduled on October 14 instead of October 15 due to security reasons.

Following a BCCI meeting in the capital on Sunday, Shah revealed several other countries, without mentioning their names, wrote to BCCI pointing out logistical challenges their teams would face, thus requesting changes. Though the BCCI secretary said the Indian board remains in discussion with cricket’s apex body over possible rescheduling of a couple of dates, he kept mum on the date change of the India vs Pakistan game.

The BCCI, anyway, took longer than expected to announce the 2023 World Cup schedule, and with several requests now coming in from a few boards, more changes to it will happen, and per Shah, the venues will remain the same while dates will be adjusted.

"As far as possible, we are looking at not changing the venue as well as the matches. Not changing the venue is very important. Teams which have six-day gaps between matches, we are trying to reduce it to four-five days; and those that have just two-day gaps, we are trying to increase to three days," Shah added.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah confirmed the 2023 World Cup schedule will undergo a few changes, with the revised schedule to be finalised in consultation with the ICC in a few days. BCCI secretary Jay Shah confirms 2023 World Cup schedule will undergo changes

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah is said to have held a two-hour long closed-door meeting with India men’s team coach Rahul Dravid in Miami ahead of the USA leg against West Indies.

The two powerful men in Indian cricket handpicked several topics and discussed the future plan as we inch closer to two mega events – Asia Cup 2023 and ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023.

Per a report in Cricbuzz, this meeting happened before the final two T20Is against West Indies in Lauderhill, Florida, on August 12 and 13. While the Indian Team was putting up at Marriot in Miami, Dravid drove down to a separate hotel where Shah (who was in the USA for a personal visit) was staying.

The BCCI secretary was also seen in attendance during the fifth and final T20I.

Although from the outside it might appear like a routine meeting between two top bosses, the significance of this shall not be underestimated. With India facing several questions – mostly regarding selection (particularly for the number four and five spots in the ODIs) and preparation for the two multi-team events, this meeting is expected to have covered these topics.

Also, considering the preparatory camp scheduled to begin on August 24 in Alur, Bengaluru, discussions around the same are said to have taken place.

India suffer setback in the Caribbean

India’s tour of the West Indies was the starting point of the roadmap to the World Cup, and it’s fair to say the Men in Blue left several questions unanswered. While India reigned supreme in the Tests and three ODIs, they lost the five-match T20Is 2-3 (for the first time against West Indies).

With a relatively younger squad at the helm considering next year’s T20 World Cup in this part of the world, the Indian Team failed to make the most of their chances and fell shy of maintaining their winning streak in the shortest format.

While they came second in the format in which West Indies are considered kings, India has shifted their attention to the Ireland T20Is.

Following that, the Asia Cup 2023 (co-hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka this time) will get underway. After that, the Indian Team will host five-time World Cup winners Australia in a short three-match ODIs, starting September 22 in Mohali.

After the end of this series, the much-awaited ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 will begin in India on October 5, with the warm-up matches starting on September end.

Jasprit Bumrah is totally fit, may travel to Ireland for T20Is, says BCCI secretary Jay Shah

Dubbed by many as the greatest Indian captain, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, fondly known as MS Dhoni, turned 42 on Friday, July 7. The beloved 'Thala' lately tasted success in the 16th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) with his Chennai Super Kings team winning the title for the fifth time equaling Mumbai Indians.

His teammates, best friends and even colleagues took to social media to send birthday greetings to the legend.

From Suresh Raina and Ravindra Jadeja to some of the young guns, Dhoni received ample love and best wishes from all quarters.

To date, the only captain to win all white-ball ICC trophies, including the T20 World Cup (2007), 50-over World Cup (2011) and the Champions Trophy (2013), Dhoni is regarded among the game's finest strategists and perhaps one of the best wicketkeepers of all time.

From being the ultimate finisher that he was, having won a plethora of games on his own for both India and his IPL franchises, CSK and Rising Pune Supergiant, Dhoni's ability to produce a stumping in a fraction of seconds gave him the name of 'the quickest man in the east'.

Other than winning three ICC titles as Indian captain, Dhoni also clinched two Asia Cup trophies (2010, 2016) and was also the first Indian captain to win the ODI series in Australia (2008).

As it often unfolds in life, he has had many low moments as a captain throughout his career, but Dhoni's ability to rise from the ashes and deliver with what is at his disposal separated him from the rest.

On his birthday, some of Dhoni's closet pals on and off the field, including Raina and Jadeja, sent him greetings on social media. Several budding youngsters like Tilak Varma, who received his maiden India call-up for the upcoming West Indies series, also tweeted wishes for the veteran skipper.

ALSO READ: Ashes 2023, 3rd Test, Day 1: Mark Wood's five-for keeps England in driver's seat despite Mitchell Marsh's ton From being the ultimate finisher that he was, having won a plethora of games on his own for both India and his IPL franchises, CSK and Rising Pune Supergiant, Dhoni's ability to produce a stumping in a fraction of seconds gave him the name of 'the quickest man in the east'. Indian cricket legends send birthday greetings to MS Dhoni as Thala turns 42

Skipper Rohit Sharma is under pressure after India's recent loss against Australia in the World Test Championship (WTC) Final by 209 runs. This was India's second consecutive loss in the WTC Final after losing the first final against New Zealand in 2021 under Virat Kohli.

India will now travel to West Indies for a full tour which will comprise two Tests, three ODIs and five T20Is. The 36-year-old is set to lead India on the tour but will he go on to lead India throughout the current WTC Cycle of 2023-25 remains to be seen. According a report by the news agency PTI, the selectors may take a call on Rohit's captaincy after the two Tests against West Indies. The report, citing a source, however, said that Rohit isn't going to be removed from captaincy immediately.

"These are baseless stuff that Rohit will be removed from captaincy. Yes, whether he will last the whole two-year WTC cycle is a big question as he would be nearly 38 when the third edition ends in 2025," a senior BCCI source told PTI on condition of anonymity. "As of now, I believe that Shiv Sunder Das and his colleagues will have to take a call after the two Tests and looking at his batting form."

"After West Indies, we have no Tests till December-end when the team travels to South Africa. So there is enough time for selectors to deliberate and take a decision. By then the fifth selector (new chairman) will also join the panel and a decision can be taken," the source added.

After taking on the captaincy, Rohit has led India in seven Tests and missed three - one in England due to COVID-19 and two against Bangladesh due to split webbing. Rohit has scored 390 runs in those seven matches at an average of 35.45 with his 120 against Australia in Nagpur Test of the Border-Gavaskar series being the highlight.

The source also told PTI that Rohit wasn't keen on taking the Test captaincy but erstwhile president Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah convinced him to do so.

"The two top men at that time (former president Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah) had to convince him to take up the role once KL Rahul failed to impress as a captain in South Africa," the source said.

Selectors may take decision on Rohit's captaincy later this year - Report

With each passing day, a new stipulation or suggested change gets added to the Asia Cup 2023 saga that has made enough headlines for reasons unrelated to cricket. Following the IPL 2023 Final, where all Asian Cricket Council (ACC) members, barring PCB representatives, were present, Jay Shah – BCCI secretary and ACC chief, clarified his stance on PCB’s hybrid model, saying the Asia Cup will happen in Sri Lanka only, and that the PCB has to abide by it, else they can pull out.

Although no formal announcement has been made, as per a report in the Telegraph India, sources in the knowhow have revealed that PCB chief Najam Sethi will be informed about the same in the next ACC meeting.

It must be noted Pakistan was the original host for this year’s Asia Cup, and upon receiving reservations from the BCCI over their team going to Pakistan and playing a multi-team event series there, the PCB proposed a hybrid model - which was also denied by the Indian board.

That model stated four or five matches will be played in Pakistan, while India will play its games in the UAE. The BCCI played down this idea citing unfavourable weather conditions in the UAE during September.

However, as reported earlier, Jay Shah had invited top bosses from ACB, BCB and SLC for the IPL 2023 Final – and after informal discussions around the same, all agreed to play the Asia Cup 2023 in Sri Lanka, with the island nation also agreeing to host the tournament on short notice.

Meanwhile, PCB, on several occasions, has said that if Asia Cup 2023 rights were snatched from them, there is a high chance their government might not allow Pakistan to travel to India for the 50-over World Cup later this year.
Besides, the International Cricket Council (ICC) chairman Greg Barclay and CEO Geoff Allardice are currently in Lahore seeking assurance from Pakistan over their participation in the World Cup.

Play the Asia Cup in Sri Lanka or pull out: ACC to PCB - Reports

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Najam Sethi has called the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to implement a hybrid model for the upcoming Asia Cup and the ODI World Cup to allow a smooth passage of play between the two nations. The ‘so-called’ hybrid model will see the fixture between India and Pakistan in the Asia Cup and the ODI World Cup get a stage at neutral venues as both countries have opted not to travel to their opposing team’s home due to poor diplomatic relations.

"We can play all the matches in a neutral venue. The World Cup can be held without any problem, the Asia Cup and the Champions Trophy can also be held,” Sethi said while in conversation with Sports Tak.

"If India are ready to play in Pakistan, there is no problem at all, then we will also go to India to play the World Cup. If that's not possible, then the hybrid model can be used as a compromise," he added.

Hybrid Model rejected

According to the latest reports, the hybrid model is set to be rejected by the BCCI and other member nations of the Asia Cricket Council (ACC), giving a big blow to Pakistan as they prepare to host the Asia Cup. With India not travelling to Pakistan and the hybrid model rejected, the speculations of the Asia Cup moving outside the current host nation have intensified.

PCB chief Sethi calls for hybrid model for Asia Cup and ODI World Cup, says 'We can play in neutral venue'

In a major development surrounding the 2023 Asia Cup, island nation Sri Lanka has emerged as the front-runner to host the multi-team event in September. With BCCI refusing to send its team across the border for the slated event and with UAE getting ruled out as an option due to harsh weather conditions during that month, Sri Lanka looks like a viable venue to host Asia Cup, as per the Indian Express.

Earlier, we reported that the BCCI received support from its close allies in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan cricket boards over not sending the team to Pakistan and staging the 2023 Asia at a neutral venue or out of Pakistan. With an official word on the much-talked-about 2023 Asia Cup venue likely to be out by the end of this month at the earliest, it remains to be seen what stance PCB will take.

However, after getting a red signal from the Narendra Modi-led government, the BCCI refused to send the team to Pakistan.

PCB chief, Najam Sethi then also proposed a hybrid model wherein the Indian team will play its matches outside of Pakistan – to which the Indian cricket board snubbed the offer mentioning this will make things awkward between both BCCI and PCB.

After BCCI denied accepting anything that PCB had to offer, the Pakistani board retaliated, threatening BCCI of boycotting the 2023 World Cup in India later this year.

Asia Cup 2023: Nepal secure historic first-ever qualification, join India and Pakistan in Group A

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is mulling the possibility of staging the Women’s Premier League (WPL) during a winter window as they try to engage more audience. The inaugural edition that was played in Mumbai in 2023 could be further expanded to a home-away format in the future according to Joint Secretary Jay Shah. The idea to move the WPL to the winter window could see the premier competition take place during the Hindu festival of Diwali.

"We are mulling the possibility of scheduling the WPL, in the home and away format, in the Diwali window; not two seasons in a year but just a different time window," Shah said during an interaction with mediapersons.

The inaugural edition of the WPL was a huge success after Mumbai Indians beat Delhi Capitals in the final in March. Harmanpreet Kaur’s army beat Delhi in a one-sided contest with all matches taking place in Mumbai at the Brabourne Stadium and the DY Patil Stadium.

The 2023 Asia Cup has been much talked about. While Pakistan will host the 50-over continental tournament, the venue isn't finalised as India have made it clear that they won't travel to their neighbouring country due to the strained political relations between both sides. BCCI announces massive $600,000 reward for U19 women’s team on winning World Cup

More than a month after the BCCI sacked Chetan Sharma led-selection committee following T20 World Cup debacle, the board on Saturday, January 7th, announced the new senior men’s selection committee – reappointing Chetan Sharma as the chief selector. The Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) comprising of Sulakshana Naik, Ashok Malhotra, and Jatin Paranjape recommended Chetan to lead a new team that will also have Shiv Sundar Das, Subroto Banerjee, Salil Ankola and Sridharan Sharath. The CAC had an uphill task to undertake as more than 600 applications were filed for the five vacant spots.

The statement released by the board said, "The Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) comprising Ms Sulakshana Naik, Mr Ashok Malhotra, and Mr Jatin Paranjape undertook an extensive process for selecting members of the All-India Senior Selection Committee. The Board received around 600 applications following its advertisement for the five posts issued on its official website on 18th November 2022."

BCCI announces All-India Senior Men Selection Committee, reappoints Chetan Sharma as chief selector

On Thursday (January 05), Asian Cricket Council chief, and BCCI Secretary, Jay Shah announced the cricketing calendar for 2023 and 2024. In a tweet, he wrote, "Presenting the @ACCMedia1 pathway structure & cricket calendars for 2023 & 2024! This signals our unparalleled efforts & passion to take this game to new heights. With cricketers across countries gearing up for spectacular performances, it promises to be a good time for cricket."

However, Shah's announcement didn't please Pakistan Cricket Board's (PCB) chairman Najam Sethi. He, thus, took a dig at ACC chief for 'for unilaterally presenting ACC structure and calendars 2023-24' and wrote in response, "Thank you Jay Shah for unilaterally presenting ACC structure and calendars 2023-24 especially relating to Asia Cup 2023 for which Pakistan is the event host. While you are at it, you might as well present structure and calendar of our PSL 2023! A swift response will be appreciated."

The ACC, in a statement, has now called Sethi's claims baseless and revealed that they had already emailed the PCB about the calendar of Asian cricket on December 22. "It has come to our knowledge that PCB Chairman Mr. Najam Sethi has made a comment on the ACC President unilaterally taking the decision on finalising the calendar and announcing the same. The ACC wants to clarify that it has followed established due process. The calendar was approved by its Development Committee and Finance & Marketing Committee in a meeting held on December 13th, 2022," the ACC said.

ACC slams Najam Sethi after PCB chief's dig at Jay Shah for announcing cricket calendar for 2023 & 2024

Tensions are rising between India and Pakistan cricketing establishments, Pakistan Cricket Board Chief Najam Aziz Sethi has taken a sarcastic jibe at the Indian Cricket Board secretary Jay Shah claiming that he unilaterally announced the Asian Cricket Council's two-year calendar.

Cricket boards at war: Row over Asia Cup intensifies, BCCI and PCB on collision course again

Last year, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary Jay Shah -- also the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) chief -- confirmed that this year's Asia Cup will be at a neutral venue as India won't travel to Pakistan -- where the edition is scheduled to be held. It raised eyebrows and saw the then Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Ramiz Raja lash out at Shah.

A lot was said and written as Pakistan have threatened to boycott the ODI World Cup, to be held in India later this year, if the Asia Cup is held at a neutral venue. Many also backed India's stance of not touring Pakistan, following the 2008 Mumbai blasts, whereas some felt Shah shouldn't have spoken about the Asia Cup when addressing the media at the BCCI Annual General Meeting (AGM) in October.

On Thursday (January 05), ACC chairman Shah released the calendar for 2023 and 2024. He tweeted, "Presenting the @ACCMedia1 pathway structure & cricket calendars for 2023 & 2024! In the interview, he slammed BCCI saying 'it is an independent board' and not reliant on the government to finalise whether to travel to Pakistan for the Asia Cup 2023 and feels if India doesn't want to visit their neighbouring country for the continental tournament, Pakistan also have a right to ask for the ODI World Cup to be held elsewhere.

'What type of standards are these?'

Sethi said, "If you won't come to Pakistan and then say come to India. What type of standards are these? I believe that politics should be kept far aside. BCCI is an independent board but ours (PCB) is linked to the government. So definitely we have to take many permissions from the government but the BCCI considers itself as an independent and private unit then such type of politics isn't necessary." He stated, "What is neutral venue? Why should we host our tournament in a neutral country? Let's play the 2023 World Cup match between India and Pakistan at a neutral venue in Australia then."

Sethi asserted, "Earlier also Mr Jay Shah gave a statement in which my predecessor Mr Ramiz Raja was not happy with that and expressed disappointment. He announced before that we (India) won't play against Pakistan in Pakistan." He added, "So the thing is on one side you want Pakistan to come and play the World Cup (2023) in India. On the other end, you say we don't want to go to Pakistan to play the Asia Cup. Tomorrow when the Champions Trophy will be played in Pakistan, won't you play that as well?."

While the Asia Cup has been confirmed to be held in September, there is nothing official regarding which country will host the event. Moreover, Pakistan have threatened to boycott the 2023 ODI World Cup, in India, if they are deprived of hosting rights for the continental event. Hence, some big decisions are on the way with regard to both events.

Pakistan are also scheduled to host the 2025 Champions Trophy. Hence, a lot will depend on how things pan out this year before the next CT, i.e. regarded as a mini version of the WC.

This signals our unparalleled efforts & passion to take this game to new heights. With cricketers across countries gearing up for spectacular performances, it promises to be a good time for cricket." While you are at it, you might as well present structure and calendar of our PSL 2023! A swift response will be appreciated.
