<h2><strong>Bumrah, Rahul fit for Asia Cup?</strong></h2>

<p>“Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna are in the final stages of their rehab and are bowling with full intensity in the nets. The duo will now play some practice games, which the NCA will organise. The BCCI Medical Team is pleased with their progress and will make a final decision after assessing them following the practice games,” read a release from BCCI Secretary Jay Shah.</p>

<p>Bumrah has been out of the India side since September 2022 and has been struggling with a shoulder injury. He missed the entire Indian Premier League (IPL) season and was not part of the Indian team that reached the semifinal of the T20 World Cup in 2022. Bumrah’s absence has been a major miss for India and his IPL franchise Mumbai Indians.</p>

<p>Shreyas Iyer has also made steady progress that could see him join the Indian team for the Asia Cup. Iyer too missed the IPL 2023 season and was a major miss for Kolkata Knight Riders. KL Rahul, however, played at the initial stage of the IPL but was not available for the playoffs having met with an injury against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).</p>

<p>“Rishabh Pant has made significant progress in his rehabilitation and has commenced batting as well as keeping in the nets. He is currently following a fitness programme designed for him which includes strength, flexibility and running,” the statement further added.</p>

<p>India will announce their Asia Cup squad in the coming days while the squad for the ODI World Cup will be out at the end of August. The deadline to announce the ODI World Cup squad is 31 August.</p>

<p>Former Australia quick Jason Gillespie feels Jasprit Bumrah’s absence is being felt dearly, and for what the India pacer brings to the table, his comeback would be grander for the Men in Blue. The ace seamer has been out of action since September last year due to a back injury.</p>

<p>As per the latest reports, he is training hard at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, preparing for his much-anticipated comeback during the Ireland series, which&nbsp;starts August 18th.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In an exclusive chat with Times of India, Gillespie, who starred for the Aussies during their golden period from the late 1990s to early 2000s, heaped praises on Bumrah, saying he is unlike every other pacer nowadays and with his ability to hit the pitch hard and cramp batters for room makes him special.</p>

From all the feedback I've heard from batsmen around the world, he hits the bat a lot. He's quicker than a lot of people than the speed gun suggests," Gillespie said as quoted by TOI.</p>

<p>In his absence, India suffered big time during the World T20 in Australia last year, going down by ten wickets against England in the semis. Also, for the second-straight time, India suffered a loss in the World Test Championship (WTC) Final against the Oz at the Oval. Now, with India aiming to win the Asia Cup in the lead-up to the home World Cup later this year, Bumrah’s return will be a pivotal moment for India.</p>

<p>Talking highly of Bumrah, Gillespie noted that players like him are assets for any team, and his record in the limited white-ball games he played for India is nothing less than impressive. Gillespie added India needs Bumrah as he can change things around in no time.</p>

<p>Zaka Ashraf, who is likely to be the next chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board, has waded into a controversy. Ashraf had rejected Najam Sethi's hybrid model for the upcoming Asia Cup 2023. It seems like now he has undergone a change of heart. Zaka Ashraf had said he didn’t agree with the hybrid model during a media interview on Wednesday, triggering controversy over whether talks will resume regarding the specifics of the Asia Cup 2023 or not. But in a later turn of events, he told ESPNcricinfo that the decision has been made, so they will go ahead with it. The Asia Cup is to be held in Sri Lanka and Pakistan in September.</p>

<p>Zaka Ashraf’s change of heart</p>

<p>Zaka Ashraf said as quoted by Sports Inside, “In my personal opinion, this whole hybrid model is not beneficial for Pakistan and I did not like it. Being a host, Pakistan should have negotiated better to ensure that the entire tournament is played in Pakistan. Sri Lanka is taking a large number of matches and Pakistan has only four matches, which is not in our country's interest."<br />
Zaka Ashraf said that since the decision has been taken, they will have to abide by it. “I don't have any intention of non-compliance. I can't do anything about it now other than honouring the commitment. But going forward, whatever decision we take will be in the interest of the country."</p>

<p>Earlier, Zaka Ashraf had also said in a press conference in Islamabad on Wednesday that he rejects the hybrid model of Asia Cup 2023 because he does not agree with it. Being able to maintain a decent line and length under attack is now mandatory in the tougher series, and a fully fit Australian attack should benefit if the opposition are overzealous," Ian wrote.</p>

<p>However, looking into India's likely XI, there won't be match-winners in Bumrah and Pant, as both are out for an indefinite period owing to respective injuries, while Chappell feels their absence pulls India back regarding entering the contest as hot favourites.</p>

<p>On the other hand, Shreyas Iyer is also scheduled to have surgery on his lower back next week, and after remaining under the surgeon’s care for approx. two weeks later, he will also reach the NCA and begin his rehab.</p>

<p>Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma is all set for the latest season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) as the predations are in the final stage. While Mumbai will look to put behind a disappointing 2022 season, their main aim will be to conquer the glorious title for the sixth time. However, ahead of the start he was disappointed to miss out on the services of star man Jasprit Bumrah and says those are big shoes to fill in.</p>

<p>“It will be a big miss," the India skipper said.</p>

<p>"It is sad, but we do understand how big his (Jasprit) shoes are to fill."</p>

<p>While MI are yet to find a suitable replacement for Jasprit, the franchise is looking to close in on a replacement as the IPL season is set for a kickoff in less than 48 hours. Mumbai will have the luxury of getting an experienced player but replacing Bumrah will be a big headache.</p>

<p>"Yes, we have been discussing a few options and hopefully we can close it in the next couple of days and let you know about it," Rohit said on Wednesday.</p>

<p>"There is an opportunity that is up for grabs, to fill that place. A lot of young players will get an opportunity and this is a platform for them to come out and express themselves. There are a couple of guys who have been with this team for the last two years and they are very much ready to step up,” Rohit added.</p>

<p>"We will see tonight (in a practice match). He's playing tonight. One of the things about international players is that they need the freedom to move around a bit. All of them have been playing cricket. Jofra obviously is coming off a major injury, he has been playing quite a bit of cricket lately, which is good. He's in a good space. Bumrah did try to make a comeback a couple of times but the injury, for which he's undergoing a rehab in National Cricket Academy (NCA), kept getting serious.</p>

<p>The injury first made Bumrah miss the ICC T20 World Cup last year in which India crashed out in the semi-final after losing by 10 wickets against England. Now, Bumrah may also miss the World Test Championship (WTC) final to be played from June 7 in England, given if India qualify for that.&nbsp;</p>
